s the memories of our summer vacations slowly fade away, we now find ourselves rushing around to stock up on school supplies, to find school uniforms that actually fit, and to gently try to get our little ones (and not so little ones) back into the spirit of learning. In other words: it’s ‘Back to School’ time! While the hot and sticky summer temperatures will stay with us for a few months longer, it won’t be long before we’re back into our school time routines. Study sessions, afterschool activities and sports will soon start anew. Before your weekends are once again overtaken by sports practices and birthday parties, take time to enjoy these final weeks of summer. Remember, fun family memories are made of lazy days in the pool and late-night movie marathons. Cherish the carefree days of summer because we’ll be ‘Back to School’ before you know it! Sincerely,

retirement planning 3 Steps You Must Take Before Making Any Financial Decision
H
ave you ever purchased a financial or insurance product only to later discover that it negatively impacted your tax and investment planning? The correct course of action should be to discover your needs and build the proper plan first, just like you would if you were building a house. Surveys of affluent Americans consistently tell us that their major frustration is that financial advisors should be more proactive about future issues that might affect their financial well being. Without a complete review of your personal situation, risk tolerance, income needs, tax situation, and estate and charitable desires, no one can or should have an opinion on whether a specific product or investment is right for you. It is the discovery of your true desires and needs that is the first step your advisor should take, not the choice of investment products. I suggest a simple, easy to understand, 3 Step Review as a great way of helping you determine your true needs and desires and whether or not your current strategies match up with your plans. As an example, say you are thinking about selling your home or other piece of real estate. ▸▸ The first step is a complete review of your tax return to determine your current tax situation and what tax issues may be associated with or compounded by the sale of your property, thus allowing you to prepare for the cost or help implement a suitable strategy to lower or eliminate the tax. ▸▸ The second step is an income analysis to determine if you are using your income sources effectively and what potential income you can derive from the proceeds of the real estate sale. This can ensure you have adequate income to meet your future needs following a possible move into an apartment or condo or replacing income from a rental property. ▸▸ The third step is a risk analysis to determine if you’re uncomfortable with your exposure to the risk of capital loss in your current investment portfolio. This may be stopping you from selling your property because you are very nervous about reinvesting those dollars. So, with this example, the 3 Step Review is like getting your financial house in order before you sell your physical house. It helps assure that the decision to sell is right for you and that you will be able to make this particular transition in life with confidence. The 3 Step Review can be applied to any financial decision or concern you have. It may help you stop your money from falling through the cracks and decide whether or not any major financial decision is right for you. In other words, learn what questions to ask before making any financial decision and identify ways to help assure your decisions are in your best interest. If you want to discover the three biggest misconceptions that your CPA, attorney and financial advisor may be missing that could cost you or your heirs thousands of dollars per year, I recommend you schedule a complimentary office visit (see contact information below) or attend my upcoming free dinner seminar (for reservations call 800-446-1840. See invitation insert in this publication).

f you are looking for something to do on a Saturday, make sure you check out one of Plantation’s best-kept secrets for food lovers. The city hosts a Farmer’s Market every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Volunteer Park, located at 12050 West Sunrise Boulevard. Organizers promise you’ll find one of a kind items, in addition to fresh organic, and non-organic pro- Shoppers can browse for organic and non-organic produce at the market. duce. “Everything is natural and fresh and all artisanal items you won’t see elsewhere,” said Jerry Kugel, one of the organizers of the market who runs the Happy Dog Bakery display. The market has been open for more than a year, but was officially rededicated in May by city leaders and vendors who worked in partnership to expand the market, and give it a whole new look. From the original 6-8 vendors, there are now 25 on a given weekend, all of whom offer different and unique items. Kugel says they have a waiting list of vendors looking to join their market, but not all will be accepted because the organizers are committed to maintaining a very high quality product. In addition to produce, shoppers will find plants, orchids, fresh flowers, and local honey. You might want to go with an appetite; vendors are only too happy to hand out samples of homemade hummus, breads and pastries, olive oils, dips, pickled products, guacamole, natural sorbet, loose tea, grass-fed beef and more.
Vito Volve has sold fresh mozzarella at the market for nearly two months. He says shoppers are pleasantly surprised to find fresh cheeses for sale, outside of their local supermarket.”Usually this is only something you’ll find in a market like Whole Foods. But now they can find it here too,” he said. Asiel Landa hands out samples of Anita’s Guacamole to anyone walking by his booth. He says the Karina Rizzo helps a shopper select one of her specialty pasta sauces. crowds have noticeably picked up since the rededication. “It is a nice place to come. We have music, food to taste and it is a great atmosphere,” he said. The City of Plantation originally established its Farmers Market to provide residents access to fresh and wholesome goods. But in addition, vendors like Kugel say they also hope the market also becomes a type of community meeting place where shoppers see friends and neighbors, and feel connected to their community. They recently added tables and chairs so shoppers feel welcome to sit and enjoy some of their purchases. “We hope more and more people come out and see what we are about,” he said. The Farmer’s Market is open every Saturday from 8a.m. to 2 p.m. at Volunteer Park, located at West Sunrise Boulevard and 118th Avenue and it runs year round. e are working harder than ever and spending more time in the comfort of our own homes. So when we retreat to our lair, we are looking for comfort, relaxation and an overall positive feeling. These elements are achieved by marrying the different layers of your décor. There are five easily identifiable layers which include: flooring, wall covering, furniture, art and accessories.
Rain or shine, there is alway s a bouncing time!
Window Coverings
All too often we deal with the first four layers and neglect the last one. But really, it is your drapery and blinds, because of the square footage that they demand in a room, that are the key to pulling all of the elements together. I am working on a gorgeous project right now in Weston where my client has all the flooring, wall colors, moldings, furniture and fabulous contemporary art in place, but there is still something missing. Now that we are installing ceiling to floor drapery panels, cornices and medallion panels, the interior beauty of the home is shining through.

Notice in the BEFORE picture how small and out of proportion this window was on the huge 25 foot wall where it sat. We totally transformed it, adding height and layers. Like art, we created a 3-D effect to transform this insignificant little window into a stunning focal point that is deserving of its place in the formal living room.
Where do I start?
You can start by visiting our showroom, because “seeing is believing.” You won’t find a better selection anywhere. We believe that it is not enough to just sell Hunter Douglas blinds at our Gallery. We have full-sized displays of blinds and modern draperies together so you can appreciate what this combination can do in your home. We feature Traditional, Classic, Ecletic, Tommy Bahama and Contemporary. Bring in pictures of your windows, and your sizes and let us show you what magic we can do. With over 20 years of experience, our professional designers will guide you from start to finish. Have an idea where your budget needs to be because fabric prices vary so much. For your largest openings, keep the colors light on the eye. Keep very heavy patterns for a smaller percentage of the design. Mix colors and patterns, but keep in mind that there must be flow if you are dealing with an open floor plan. Add color through creative highlights like bandings, trim, linings etc. We offer motorization of drapery and blinds, custom drapery – cornices – valances, upholstery, color matching, Plantation shutters, Hunter Douglas blinds, silk plants, decorative accessories, rugs and more. Art Academy offers a Great Foundation By Julie Levin

rent Miller says his art school inside the Schacknow Museum of Fine Arts in Plantation is the “best kept secret around”. Inside, in a no-frills classroom, students of all levels are learning the basic skills to creating great art. “This is a place to come to learn to paint and draw without having to get involved with degrees,” said Miller, who lives in Coral Springs. The RemBrent Academy opened one year ago, and is slowly gaining a following in Plantation, and the surrounding areas. It is led by Miller, a professional artist, who said he saw a need for a school that taught students the basic foundation of art, particularly drawing and painting. He said it is something that too many other area schools simply don’t delve into. “Our students learn to understand the concept of light, shadows, form; everything that makes the painting what it is,” said Miller. Brent Miller and his painting called "Butterfly Love.” The school offers courses twice a week, and currently has students from 14 to 80 years old. Miller says he is not looking for people just looking to hang out, but rather students with a desire to learn. The courses are held inside the Schacknow Museum of Fine Arts in Plantation, which has provided a venue for local artists since 2000. Through its connection to the museum, Miller says a portion of the fees for the RemBrent Academy are funneled directly back into the community to local charities.

Students learn from Miller, who began focusing on his own art ten years ago after a long career in the restaurant industry. He is a graduate of the Fort Lauderdale Art Institute and his work has been shown in a variety of juried art shows in the Northeast and in Florida. His own art is contemporary, with lots of color. Working mostly in oils on self-made panels, his main focus is his series of paintings, which he calls “Flowers of the Mind.” He starts out with an abstract shape representing flowers or flower-like pods, then adds small realistic touches like butterflies or hearts to add interest. “I take geometric forms, shape them into a flower, ground them in reality, and have some fun,” said Miller. The RemBrent Academy of Art is located inside the Schacknow Museum of Fine Art, located at 7080 N.W. 4th Street, just behind Plantation City Hall. They offer foundation to advanced techniques in drawing and painting, and also offer high school portfolio classes. Classes are for adults and teens, and are held Thursday through Saturday: from 10am-12:30pm or 1pm-4pm. The cost is $200-$250 for six sessions, each lasting 2 1/2 to 3 hours. If you join the Museum as a patron, you can receive 10% discount on the Art classes and your membership qualifies as a charitable deduction. For more information, call 954-583-5551. Plantation Firefighters Douse Competition at State Event By Julie Levin
T
hey may be an almost all volunteer force, but when it comes to firefighting skills, the Plantation Fire Department is all business. For a third consecutive time, the city’s Firematics Team was crowned state champs after competing in the Florida State Firefighter’s Association, State Firematics Tournament at the Bass Pro Shops in Fort Myers in early June. The Plantation squad, a 10-member group that competes regularly in a variety of firefighting skill competitions, competed against 8 other squads from around the state. “It brings tremendous pride and honor to Plantation with the fact that we go out there at a state level, and can do the job very, very well,” said Joel Gordon, the Fire Department Spokesperson. Teams competed in six different events involving a variety of firefighting skills including a crowd favorite, the old fashioned Bucket Brigade, which was one of the events the Plantation team took first place in. They do other events involving fire hoses, including hitting targets with sprays of water. In another timed event, they had to break down a large hose into two and knock down two targets, an event they broke the state record on last year. In yet another event, they had to replace and reset a ruptured hose line. Taking the state title a third time proves their skill is no fluke, said Gordon. “A third win makes us a dynasty,” he said. The Plantation Fire Department has been serving the citizens of Plantation since its inception in 1957 when a group of 17 civic minded citizens conceived a volunteer fire department to serve the newly born community. Though the rescue and fire prevention personnel are career firefighters, the department is today the largest volunteer fire department in Florida with 190 active members. It is a multifaceted community service agency providing a variety of services including fire suppression, emergency medical services, fire prevention, public education, and emergency management.

legally speaking Pool Safety – The Key to A Safe Summer in South Florida By Howard Citron
T
emperatures are on the rise as another Florida summer is in full swing. As we all look to beat the summer heat, our swimming pools will get crowded quickly. In just a one week span last month, four children nearly drowned in Palm Beach County alone. This was a sober reminder that swimming pools can be deadly traps for children. Each day, approximately ten people die from unintentional drowning. In fact, drowning is the sixth leading cause of unintentional death by injury for people of all ages and the second leading cause of child death in the United States, behind only motor vehicle accidents. Statistically, fifty percent of children submerged in pools die. Too often, drowning accidents are preventable. As parents, we encourage our neighbors in the community to stay safe in and around pools, spas, lakes, canals and the beach by practicing as many safety steps as possible. Children under five are most at risk and have the highest drowning rate of any age group. In fact, Florida has the highest drowning death rate in the nation for children under five.
Here are a few tips to help prevent these types of accidents. Never leave a child unattended. If a child wanders off and you lose site of him/her, check the pool first. Also, take all physical safety precautions possible. Install child proof fences around home swimming pools. The fence should be four sided and keep the pool area completely separate from the house and the yard. The fence should be at least four feet high. In addition, cover and lock hot tubs when they aren’t in use and keep rescue equipment such as a life preserver and telephone near the pool. Also, install an alarm on doors and/or windows so you will be alerted if one is opened. Finally, never drink alcohol while you are responsible for watching children near or in a pool. Alcohol can dull the senses and make it more likely you won’t notice a dangerous situation. Alcohol can also increase the time it takes for you to react to a drowning situation. Education is another key to reducing drowning accidents. Statistics show that participation in formal swimming classes reduces the risk of drowning in children under five by as much as 88%. Taking a CPR class is also important. In a drowning situation, seconds count. CPR performed by bystanders before emergency personnel arrive has been shown to improve the outcome in many victims. The quicker the intervention occurs, the more likely for an improved outcome.

cover story Having A Baby? The Miami Maternity Center offers Natural Alternatives for Moms-to-Be By Julie Levin
M
oms-to-be looking for an alternative to the standard hospital and OB/GYN birthing experience should check out the Miami Maternity Center. Caring for mothers and families since 1995, the Miami Maternity Center provides top quality prenatal care, a soothing home-like setting for natural birth, and postpartum care for moms and their new baby. “Our slogan is ‘A Better Place to Have Your Baby,” said Carol Williams, midwife and owner of Miami Maternity Center. The dedicated staff of midwives, midwifery assistants and labor coaches at the Miami Maternity Center provide a birthing alternative to hundreds of families each year. Williams says they work off a simple philosophy; that everything they do is for the comfort, health, and well-being of their mommies and babies. It is a return to the traditional, non-invasive form of birth, where nature is allowed to take its course and the pregnancy and labor develops without intervention. If an indication arises that calls for intervention, only then do they intervene. Otherwise, it is all natural, with no pain medicines, epidurals or need to induce or speed up labor. “Women have been having babies for thousands of years. The body knows what to do,” said Williams. Among the many advantages they offer, moms come to the same place for their prenatal visits as they do for birth. When they come in labor, they’ll see the same staff that has been caring for them over many months, unlike many OB/GYN’s, who use a rotating on-call schedule. The connection becomes so unique, that in many instances, the moms stay in touch for many years. “Our clients become like family members,” said Williams. Plantation Mom Sherine Sawh recently delivered her third child, Rivan, at the
Miami Maternity Center. She says she loves the warmth and knowledge of the staff. “It is not a hospital environment. They are very friendly over there and it basically like having the baby at your own house,” she said. Moms are given the choice of how they want labor and birth to happen. They are free to walk around during labor and find the position that provides them the most comfort. The same philosophy holds for the delivery. Instead of using drugs, the Miami Maternity Center encourages moms to use natural pain management and relaxation techniques like massage or hydrotherapy. “The woman is free to listen to her own body and do what makes her most comfortable,” said Williams. Williams says their birthing alternatives reduce the risk of unnecessary procedures, like enemas and intravaneuous fluids, as well as hospital borne infections. Most importantly, the baby never leaves mom’s side once they are born for the utmost in safety. “We love what we do. Each of our moms is like our sister or daughter,” said Williams. The Miami Maternity Center works with most insurance companies and HMOs. They also accept Medicaid and offer a cash package price of $4,000 that is all inclusive. They offer water births, childbirth and early pregnancy classes, and classes for dads. The Miami Maternity Center is located at 140 NE 119 Street in Miami. To make an appointment, phone them at 1-305-754-2229 or visit them online at www. miamimaternitycenter.net.

International Dance Academy Raises the “Barre”
invitation
By Stacey Bomser

E
xcitement is in the air at the International Dance Academy as it prepares
for yet another spectacular season. The studio certainly raised the bar last year. Not only did its annual production of The Nutcracker ballet sell-out, but its spring performance of Coppélia received standing ovations. Even more impressive, two of its students are now busy preparing to compete at the “World Olympics of Ballet.”
Saturday, August 20, 1-4 p.m. Free Ballet & Jazz Classes Meet Deborah Buttner, Mary Buttner and the professional teachers of IDA! Registration • Refreshments
One of the reasons the International Dance Academy (IDA) is so successful is its incredible staff led by Artistic Director Deborah Buttner and Co-Director Mary Buttner. These ladies are highly respected dancers, teachers and choreographers with strong classical ballet backgrounds. Deborah is a graduate of the prestigious London Studio Center Classical Ballet program and trained in both England and South Africa. As a professional dancer, she toured the British Isles and America performing numerous lead roles. As an instructor, she is qualified in both the Royal Academy of Dance and Cecchetti methods. “I believe demonstrating the most demanding classical techniques and variations is essential to inspiring and correctly training students,” explains Deborah, whose first teacher was her mother Mary. In addition to the Buttners, IDA’s international faculty includes Eriberto Jimenez, a soloist with the Cuban Classical Ballet of Miami, and Shaina Kaim, a graduate of IDA who returns as an accomplished teacher after two years in a professional ballet company. In addition, master classes taught by specialist teachers add excitement to the mix. IDA is one of the preeminent ballet schools in South Florida. Dancers study the acclaimed Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) method. RAD is the most highlyregarded training and examining body for classical ballet in the world, under the patronage of Queen Elizabeth II. Dancers study a defined curriculum and must pass a series of examinations satisfying the extraordinarily high standards of the RAD in order to be awarded internationally recognized certification. “Whether dancing for fun or pursuing a dance career, the Royal Academy of Dance credential puts our dancers at a great advantage,” states Mary. “They also gain the confidence and the great satisfaction of knowing they met
the most rigorous standards in dance. The International Dance Academy is the only studio in South Florida offering this prestigious academic program.” The IDA students have performed extraordinarily well. Of the 30 dancers entered in the grades three, four and five levels of the RAD examination, 27 received Distinction. Eleven of the dancers scored 90% or higher, with two earning a 98%, and one dancer, Seoyeon Kim, scoring an unheard of 100%. Even more impressive, two of the school’s elite dancers, Haylee Levin and Abbey Kay, scored so well on the RAD final examination that they have qualified to compete at the Genée International Ballet Competition, one of the most competitive ballet events in the world. It will be held in Cape Town, South Africa, in October. The Genée, as it is informally known, is considered the Olympics of ballet. It is the ultimate level of competition for an amateur classical ballet dancer. Typically only 30 to 35 ballerinas from around the world qualify each year. It is unprecedented to have two dancers from Florida, let alone the same ballet company, meet the high standards of RAD. In the last 90 years, only one other dancer from Florida has qualified to represent the United States at the Genée. While IDA has certainly proven it is South Florida’s premier ballet school, it also offers a complete menu of dance classes for all ages. Fall classes, which begin on August 22nd, are offered six days a week for all levels of dancers. Class choices include Ballet, Creative Movement, Pointe, Jazz, Contemporary, Modern and Lyrical. Also offered is the popular TuTu Cuties, a mommy-and-me style class for two and three-year-olds. For adults, the

studio offers classical ballet classes at beginner through intermediate levels. The studio is also home to the Jazzercise adult exercise program. Young dancers who want to kick-start their dance year can register for IDA’s one-week Summer Intensive Program taking place August 15-19th. According to Deborah, the stretching, strengthening and technique classes will “shake off the cobwebs” and get dancers ready for the fall classes or to audition for The Nutcracker. The open audition is scheduled for Saturday, September 10th. “We welcome auditions by dancers who want the experience of dancing in a full-scale professional production at a major performing arts theater. We have roles for all ages and skill levels, from the tiniest mouse to the exquisite Sugar Plum Fairy,” says Deborah. “We like to inspire our young dancers through the challenges, excitement and learning that come with performing in a spectacular full-length theater production.” The 12th season of the spectacular Nutcracker will be performed December 9-11th at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts. Dancers will perform five shows during the three day run which includes the popular Sunday matinee followed by “Meet Clara and Friends.” Dancers and potential students can meet the Buttners

This is an opportunity to tour the 5,500 square foot facility, which includes large classroom studios, a special studio for private instruction, a custom-costume fabrication center, a “quiet room” for homework and study, and a lunchroom. IDA will offer free ballet and jazz classes during the Open House. The studio will also be conducting dancer assessments and class placements, and accepting registrations. The registration fee will be waived for dancers presenting proof of previous registration at another dance studio. Come dressed to dance and join the fun at International Dance Academy. Plantation Students Walk in the Footsteps of U.S. Leaders By Julie Levin

hile many of their peers were at summer camp, or tanning at the beach, two Plantation students shared a summer experience unlike almost any other. Samuel Kelly-Cohen and Yusuf Mousa, both of whom recently graduated from Central Park Elementary School, spent part of their summers learning how to be leaders in the heart of the nation’s capitol. Both were invited to attend a session of the Junior National Young Leaders Conference in Washington DC, an honor reserved for the nation’s outstanding middle school students. “I was really surprised because I didn’t know that organization existed and I had no idea what to expect,” said Kelly-Cohen, 11, who will attend North Broward Preparatory School for 6th grade. “It was an experience I’ll never forget,” added Mousa, 11, who will attend Seminole Middle School. Both were nominated for the honor by Ilene Miller, their teacher in the fifth grade gifted class at Central Park Elementary. The Junior National Young Leaders Conference introduces young people to the rich tradition of leadership throughout American history, while helping them to develop their own leadership skills. They joined more than 250 other middle school students in Washington D.C. for the six-day program which had them visiting sites such as Harpers Ferry National Historical Park in West Virginia and Washington, D.C.’s many museums and memorials. Along the way, they looked at notable U.S. leaders and historic figures, and studied their impact of leadership throughout critical periods of American history including the Civil War and Reconstruction, World War II, the Great Depression and the Civil Rights Movement. The hope is the students will return with a desire to impart positive influences on those around them in their communities. For the normally shy Mousa, he says the program taught him how to solve problems by thinking more outside of the box and to open up more. “It taught me how to stand up for myself, and respect people in a nice way,” he said. Kelly-Cohen said he learned

health & wellness Botox: Your Questions Answered

otox injections are the ultimate solution for millions of people who yearn for their wrinkle-free youthful looks. Still, many people know surprisingly little about this so-called wonder drug. If you’ve ever considered getting Botox, read below for a list of my patients’ most commonly asked questions.

Botox is a brand name for Botulinum Toxin A (like Kleenex is to tissues), which is a neurotoxin protein derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Another popular brand is Dysport, which is Botox’s biggest competitor. Botulinum Toxin A is injected directly into facial muscles in order to improve the look of lines and wrinkles. It works by blocking nerve impulses to the injected muscles, or in other words: if an area of the face can’t move, it can’t wrinkle. It was FDA approved for cosmetic use in 2002, but has been in use and approved for other medical conditions since 1989. It is widely considered to be a very safe product. Botox/Dysport is most commonly used to treat frown lines, lines around the eyes (crow’s feet), horizontal forehead lines, nasal scrunch or squint lines, lines on the neck, wrinkles around the mouth, and the underarm area (for excessive sweating). Results last 3-4 months. The injections are fast, simple, and minimally invasive, with no downtime or recovery.
Where can I go to get it? These days it seems you can get Botox/Dysport everywhere from the doctor’s office to the spa to the gym. The better question might be: “Where should I get it?” The things you want to look for are: ▸▸ A board-certified medical doctor, in a medical office ▸▸ Extensive Botox/Dysport experience ▸▸ Product is not overly diluted (this is common) ▸▸ Product is authentic (you should be allowed to see the bottle)

How much does it cost? The price greatly varies, but it typically costs $8-20 per unit.
Will it look natural? This is where the practitioner’s experience makes a difference. A qualified doctor with a full knowledge of facial anatomy, who understands the balanced interplay between the different facial muscles, will possess the artistry required to produce the most natural results. Less experienced practitioners rely heavily on pre-designed injection templates, which can’t possibly give as natural a result, since everyone’s facial structure is a little different. When Botox/Dysport is strategically injected, patients achieve a relaxed, youthful look. You will not look like you’ve “had work done”, more like you’ve just had a great vacation!
Am I a candidate for Cosmetic Botox/Dysport? If you are looking to soften the appearance of wrinkles, or to help prevent them from forming, you are a good candidate. Additionally, you should not have any allergies to the product or to purified proteins, you shouldn’t be pregnant or nursing, and you should be in good physical and emotional health. Dr. Peter Freedland, M.D., M.B.A., is a board certified emergency medicine physician with more than a decade of Botox experience. His trauma background and experience repairing countless complex facial injuries give him a specialized knowledge of facial anatomy that he uses to achieve expert results. Easy Care Medical/Expert Faces, his private medical practice, is located at 100 NW 82nd Avenue, Suite #106, in Plantation, Florida. stroke, sometimes called “a brain attack” occurs when the blood flow to the brain is interrupted. When a stroke occurs, brain cells in the immediate area of the stroke begin to die because they are not receiving the oxygen and nutrients they need to function. There are two major kinds of stroke. The first, called an ischemic stroke, is caused by a blood clot that blocks a blood vessel or an artery in the brain. Most strokes are ischemic strokes. The second, a hemorrhagic stroke, is caused by a blood vessel in the brain that ruptures and bleeds into the brain. Certain risk factors may predispose an individual to a stroke; hypertension is the major risk factor. Risk factors showing some familial tendencies include diabetes mellitus, hypertension, cardiac disease, and a high blood cholesterol level. Obesity, a sedentary life style, cigarette smoking, stress, and high serum levels of cholesterol, lipoprotein, and triglycerides make an individual a high-risk candidate for stroke. In women, use of oral contraceptives and cigarette smoking increase the risk of stroke. If you have more than one risk factor you are at even greater risk. The cost of strokes is not just measured in the billions of dollars lost in work, hospitalization, and the care of survivors. The major cost or impact of a stroke is the loss of independence that occurs in 30% of the survivors. Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States and a leading cause of serious, long term disability in adults. About 600,000 new strokes are reported each year. Although a stroke can occur at any age, 72% occur in people over 65 years of age. The good news is that treatments are available that can greatly reduce the damage caused by a stroke. Time is of the essence. It is critical that you recognize the symptoms of a stroke and get to the hospital quickly. The faster you recognize the signs of a stroke the greater your ability to save a life and lessen the damage from a stroke.

SIGNS OF STROKE ▸▸ Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg especially if it occurs on one side of the body. ▸▸ Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding. ▸▸ Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes. ▸▸ Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination. Use FAST to remember the warning signs: ▸▸ FACE: Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop? ▸▸ ARMS: Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? ▸▸ SPEECH: Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is their speech slurred or strange? ▸▸ TIME: If you observe any of these signs, call 911 immediately. Also, check the time so you’ll know when the first symptoms appeared. It’s very important to take immediate action. If given within 3 hours of the start of symptoms, a clot-busting drug called tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) may reduce long-term disability for the most common type of stroke. tPA is the only FDA-approved medication for the treatment of stroke within three hours of stroke symptom onset. legally speaking New Tools to Defend Residential Mortgage Foreclosures By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
S
o far, two large law firms in South Florida have been forced to close their foreclosure practice as a result of claims and court decisions that these firms provided false information in order to improperly repossess properties on behalf of their lender clients. As a result of the actions by these firms -- which led to their demise – new tools have emerged to successfully defend residential mortgage foreclosures.
Forensic Mortgage Audit
A forensic mortgage audit involves an in depth analysis of the loan transaction by a lending compliance expert to uncover violations of federal and state lending laws committed by the original lender. These violations may even be attributable to the current lender under certain circumstances. If presented in a timely manner, the findings from a forensic mortgage audit may be used to aggressively defend a foreclosure action, to offset and reduce the amount owed on the loan obligation, and to even negotiate a worthwhile modified or restructured loan.
Securitization Analysis
During the real estate boom from 2003 to 2007, many lenders sold groups of mortgages in “securitized pools” to investment trusts on Wall Street. These trusts were created as investment tools that allowed lenders and investors to receive highly preferential tax treatment. In order to receive these tax benefits, however, strict regulations had to be followed. A securitization analysis by a qualified and credible firm can reveal whether an individual loan transaction was properly and timely transferred to a valid trust, i.e., was the loan properly “securitized.” If the loan obligation is proven not to have been properly securitized, an investment trust cannot foreclose.
Transfer History Analysis
Even if the loan is not part of an investment trust, many loans have been sold multiple times. Each time a loan was sold, certain legal transfer requirements had to be fulfilled to legalize the transfer and to allow the new transferee to foreclose, if necessary. A transfer history analysis tracks the mortgage from its originator to the true current legal owner and holder of the obligation, and also identifies any breaks in the transfer chain which could prevent the current lender from foreclosing. In some cases, this analysis has uncovered that certain lenders even forged mortgage assignment documents through the use of so-called “robo-signers” to overcome transfer issues, which led to findings of fraud and the cancellation of the mortgage debt altogether. Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, or at risk of foreclosure are discussed in a new instructional DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight for Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine you will receive a FREE copy when you make an appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team. You may also purchase the DVD online at www.arcialawfirm.com. Is orthodontic treatment effective for adults?
Your orthodontist will consult with your dentist and/or periodontist about the health of your gums. If you are a candidate for orthodontic treatment, you will continue regular supervision with your dentist and periodontist. In many cases, tooth alignment can improve the health of the gums.
Yes. Healthy teeth can be moved at any age. Many orthodontic problems can be corrected as easily for adults as for children. Orthodontic forces move teeth in the same way for both adults and children.
It’s Never Too Late To Be Your Best
Do appliances have to show?
You’re never too old to benefit from orthodontic treatment. Today, adults make up about one in every five orthodontic patients. Here is why: ▸▸ Orthodontic treatment can help correct crooked teeth or spaces that you’ve been self-conscious about for years. It can give you the confidence and pride that come with straight teeth and a great smile. ▸▸ Also, leaving misaligned teeth untreated may lead to other dental problems such as tooth decay and gum disease, as well as abnormal wearing of tooth surfaces and difficulty in chewing. ▸▸ Advances in orthodontics have made treatment more comfortable and more successful than ever for people of all ages. Orthodontics work with other dental practitioners – general dentist, periodontics, prosthodontics, oral surgeons – to provide a comprehensive approach to your dental health.
Many options are available today to minimize the appearance of braces. Today’s appliances are smaller and sleeker, and some are next-to-invisible. Your orthodontist can advise you as to what options are recommended for your particular needs.
Will orthodontic treatment fit my lifestyle?
You can do almost anything during orthodontic treatment –sing, play a musical instrument, dine out, kiss, and even have your picture taken. Some adjustments will be necessary, but, if you’re like the vast majority of adult patients, you’ll adjust quickly. “Rosebud”
osebud is a female, 2-year-old Golden Retriever who loves to swim with the kids and cuddle on the couch. Her favorite person is Mommy, because she’s always home with her. Rosebud’s favorite toy is the green “stick” she fetches in the pool almost every day. She likes attention and affection, and gets very upset if anyone goes swimming without her. She will cry and bark until she gets to jump in too! Rosebud was last seen snoozing and snoring on the couch.

community news The Softer Side of Martial Arts By BJ Lee
August 2011 | To Advertise in Plantation Town Times, Please call 954-306-1007 | www.plantationtowntimes.com
M
artial Arts is not just a sport, it is a way of life. The profound and lasting lessons that can be learned from what it takes to be a martial artist are invaluable, with far reaching effects. John Wai, owner of Plantation’s John Wai Kung Fu Academy and also co-owner of American Top Team Davie and Top Team Weston, started training Kung Fu as a young man in Hong Kong. He has trained under some of the most orthodox and respected masters who instilled the true meaning of martial arts in him and inspired him to do the same for his students. Through the course of John’s successful business career, which includes owning an independent record label and several high power positions in the media, he can credit much of his success to the philosophies of martial arts. Discipline, respect, camaraderie, dedication, humility and perseverance created the blue print for every aspect of his life, both business and personal. If the lessons of martial arts are truly understood, then one will find themselves crossing the discernable line between training martial arts and becoming a martial artist. Men, women and children will endure day to day difficulties and stressors with patience and view problems from new angles. Whether in school or work, you will become more focused and disciplined with a greater ability to concentrate and for longer periods of time. Self confidence, respect and camaraderie will help you develop lasting and meaningful relationships with others. Martial arts will also help you develop courage and humility which enables you to be assertive, positive and constantly willing to learning new things. John has always been open to ideas that would help him foster culture, philosophy and good health, both mental and physical. Even though his martial arts background is from traditional Kung Fu, John is also adept in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Kickboxing. When
the Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) craze began, he saw that this growing interest in learning an all encompassing combat sport was here to stay. Although MMA consists of a combination of several styles of martial arts, it is primarily a combat sport, taking the best techniques from each discipline. In order to teach an MMA program efficiently, John partnered with The American Top Team, one of the largest MMA teams in the U.S. and opened a location in Davie and Weston. At his new facilities, he is able to focus on MMA classes for entire families. Although there are several distinctions between John Wai Kung Fu Academy and The American Top Team schools, the underlying common thread that ties all of John’s three schools together is the fundamental principle that if you aren’t teaching the cultural and mental aspects as well as the physical of a martial art, then you are only scratching the surface and you will never achieve all there is to be learned from training. For more information on all three schools, visit: www.FloridaKungFu.com, www. AttDavie.com, or www.WestonAtt.com.
