Spring has Sprung

iving in South Florida, we do not get to experience the chang-
ing seasons, but that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate them. As we usher in spring this month, let us take a moment to appreciate the new buds on the trees and warmer weather. With Spring Break almost here, why not spend some time as a family enjoying the many splendors of our sunshine state. Why shouldn’t we enjoy all the benefits of living in the so-called “Spring Break Capital of the World.” Where else can you see alligators in their natural habitat and Mickey and friends in their not-so-natural habitat – all in the same day? Where else can you get a sunburn at the beach during the day and endless entertainment all night? Where else can you go flats fishing on a secluded sandbar and cruising the intracoastal dining scene -- all on the same boat trip? Only in South Florida! On this happy note, let’s enjoy all that our state has to offer and let’s have some FUN.

Auditions Set for Tinsel Town Cabaret By Julie Levin
I
f you have a song in your heart,
a flair for the dramatic, or you gotta dance, make sure you audition for Plantation’s yearly city-wide talent show. Auditions for the annual “Tinsel Town Cabaret” are set for later this month, and organizers say all ages and talents are welcome to come show what they’ve got. “We just look for complete variety and entertainment,” said Wes Lockard, the Special Events Coordinator for the city. Auditions are set for March 28 and March 31 at Volunteer Park Community Center. The show began several years ago as a competition with prizes awarded, but has now turned into more of a showcase to spotlight local talent. Lockard says they will be looking for anywhere from 18-20 acts. The categories are Music: vocal, instrumental Singer Cameron Wheeler, 10, belts out a song at last year’s Tinsel Town Cabaret or combination, Dance: tap, jazz, ballet, folk, or interpretative, Theater: dramatic or comic presentation and an open category for any combination of the three. Though many of the performers are from Plantation, the audition is open to entertainers from across South Florida. Past performers have come from as far as Miami to be a part of the show. The actual Tinsel Town Cabaret will be held May 11, and Lockard says it has
become so popular they often have to turn away as many as 20-25 performers who audition. He says the audition is a great way for would-be performers to gain both exposure and experience, even if they aren’t selected. “Hopefully people who don’t make it will come back and try again next year. It’s a good way for them to get their feet wet and see if it’s really what they want to do,” said Takacs and Wes Lockard, the Tinsel Town Lockard, who directs the Jack Cabaret directors, at last year’s auditions show with Jack Takacs. Auditions will be held at Volunteer Park, 12050 W. Sunrise Boulevard, on Wednesday, March 28 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday, March 31 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. If you are trying out, make sure you come completely prepared with props, costumes, etc. Acts should not exceed 3 minutes. A cassette or CD player and a piano are available, but no accompanist. Please have all tapes cued. There is no charge for auditions. Selected contestants will perform on Friday, May 11th, 7:30 p.m. at Volunteer Park. For more information, call 954-452-2510 or 954-452-2558.

Students Urged to Use Video to Combat Bullying By Julie Levin
P
eople across the country were
horrified when a 15-year old Deerfield Beach boy was doused with rubbing alcohol and set afire by four teenagers in 2009. As the teen, Michael Brewer, continues to recover, a Plantation community theater is engaging in a new effort to combat bullying. The Mosaic Theatre has launched their STOP! THE VIOLENCE video contest to encourage students to express their feelings about the increasing problem of bullying. “We are looking for creative and innovative videos that touch on the topic of anti-bullying,” said Richard Jay Simon, the Executive/Artistic Director of the Mosaic Theatre. The contest is open to any student in grades 9-12. The videos, which should be 2-5 minutes in length, can be in any style that best communicates the theme of teen violence. Styles include, but aren’t limited to, monologues, scenes, songs, illustrations, animation, collage, or dance. “It can be in whatever from best helps them communicate what they are feeling,”said Simon. The contest was organized in coordination with the Mosaic Theatre’s first world premiere play, A Measure of Cruelty, by famed playwright Joe Calarco. Thanks to funding by Arts Broward/Knight New Work Award, the play came about because the theatre wanted to commission a work loosely based on the Deerfield Beach attack.
They felt that it touched a nerve not only in South Florida, but around the world. “When we saw that incident, it shattered us,” said Simon. Simon said the theater initially helped raise money for Brewer’s recovery, and is now using A Measure of Cruelty to help spark conversation among students about teen violence. “We are trying to do as many outreach initiatives as we can to make sure that we are engaging a local and national dialogue on anti-bullying, and how can we create an awareness of it and prevent it,” said Simon. A panel of judges will select three finalists. The audiences who attend A Measure of Cruelty, which runs from April 19-May 13, will vote for the top prize. Entrants should send an email to videocontest@mosaictheatre.com with attached video file (or URL link to YouTube video) containing full name, school name, school teacher, and a paragraph summary of the video entry. Each student may submit one video submission and must have teacher approval. Entries must be received by April 2. The winners will be announced May 21. The Mosaic Theatre is located at 12200 West Broward Blvd., #312 in Plantation. For more information, including their upcoming show schedule and ticket information for A Measure of Cruelty, phone them at 954-577-8243 or visit them online at www. mosaictheatre.com

Now’s the Time to Apply for a Summer Job By Julie Levin
I
Center. There will also be an Adventure Camp at Central Park for older campers. After receiving the applications, Ryan and staff will also be scheduling interviews. Many of them will be set around Spring Break vacations, to accommodate out-of-town college students. A word of advice from Ryan; if you are lucky enough to get an interview, come prepared. Even though the position is for summer camp, when it comes to caring for youngsters, they are selective about who they take. “Treat it as a real interview, dress appropriately and come prepared to answer questions about activities with children or any supervising experience you have,” she said. Ryan advices residents to keep an eye on the city’s website. Applications for other summer positions, including park maintenance and the aquatic center, should also soon be available.
f you’re looking for a summer job,
and like being outdoors, now’s the time to apply for a spot as a summer camp counselor with the City of Plantation. Since February, the city’s Parks and Recreation Department has been accepting applications for several dozen summer recreation positions, and there’s still time to apply. The city is looking for candidates to fill roles as junior counselors, senior counselors, assistant program supervisors and program supervisors. “Depending on enrollment, we should have 61 positions to fill,” said Shannon Ryan, Superintendent of Facilities with the department. Applicants must be at least 16 years old by June 11 to apply. Experience in childcare, even as a babysitter, is preferred but not required for all positions. Past summer camp experience, either as a camper or a counselor-in-training, is also helpful. The Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of summer camp programs for children ages 5-16. The camps are designed to give children a well-rounded camp experience, with weekly activities including a fun variety of sports, arts & crafts, field trips, swim trips and special events. This summer, Ryan says they plan on operating several day camps at Central Park, Volunteer Park, the Community Center and the Jim Ward Community

Shelby’s motivation to go comes in part from her grandmother, a Holocaust survivor who travels to Israel frequently to take part in program for survivors. “I’d really like to go to support her, and she really encourages me to make this happen,” Shelby said. She is also attending a Jewish Day school this year for the first time, and being surrounded by Jewish values and Israeli pride has further sparked her interest. She’s also involved in BBYO, which is a Jewish Youth Group. Shelby and her family have traveled to Israel before, but it was many years ago and she says she doesn’t recall much from that first trip Since its founding 109 years ago, JNF has evolved into a global environmental leader by planting 250 million trees, building over 210 reservoirs and dams, developing over 250,000 acres of land, creating more than 1,000 parks, providing the infrastructure for over 1,000 communities, bringing life to the Negev Desert. With each contribution of $36 or more through its “Plant a Tree” program, donors will also receive a personalized certificate recognizing their donation.
n many respects Shelby Curran is
planting her way to Israel, one tree at a time. The 15-year old Plantation girl is hoping to visit Israel over the summer, and she’s embarked on a philanthropic way to help pay her way. Through the Jewish National Fund’s “Plant a Tree” in Israel program, she is encouraging as many people as she can to buy trees in Israel to help keep the country green. “It not only helps Israel, it helps me reach my goal,” said Curran, who is a sophomore at the David Posnack Jewish Day School. Since November, she’s been asking family, friends and schoolmates to help out by “planting a tree” in the Jewish state for $36. From that donation, half is used to actually plant a tree, and the other half is used to allow her to take part in the BBYO Israel Journey program. The program gives young adults the chance to visit Israel for 21 days to learn about its historical importance and to find spiritual meaning in their homeland. Shelby is hoping to raise as much as $6,000 by May, and was close to half her goal in early February.
If you’d like to help, visit Shelby’s personalized JNF page at www.jnf.org/pyw, click on Find Participant and put in Shelby Curran.

South Plantation Magnet Program Celebrates Tenth Anniversary By Julie Levin
S
outh Plantation High School’s Environmental Science and
Everglades Restoration Magnet Program has reached a milestone this year. The program, which fosters learning and an understanding of the environment, is celebrating its tenth anniversary. Alyce Culpepper, the coordinator who has overseen the program from the start, says part of their success is that they have a curriculum like no other. “I think the uniqueness of the courses we offer is part of what has made our magnet thrive and be very successful,” she said. The Environmental Science and Everglades Restoration Magnet Program pulls environmentally-minded students from across Broward County. This year, they have 530 students from 32 middle and private schools. An estimated 125 students graduate from the program each year. The draw has always been its theme, which is to empower students to compete in the global marketplace in environmental science and technology, and to connect them to real-world experiences, including restoring Florida’s Everglades. Teachers, all of whom were professional scientists before coming to the program, offer (top) Outdoor Exploration: students courses in Limnology or the study of slog in the Florida Everglades to learn about its unique eco-system fresh water eco-systems, Botany, Solar (bottom) The Solar Knight III, the program’s award-winning solar-powered car. Alternative Energy, Horticulture, Zoology
and more. Culpepper says they are the only school focused on the restoration of the Everglades. The honors have followed. In 2011, the Magnet Schools of America organization named the program a national Magnet School of Distinction for the third time in four years. For four consecutive years, SPHS won the Fairchild Challenge, a multi-disciplinary environmental competition sponsored by Miami’s botanical garden. Along the way, the program has grown not just in students, but in facilities. A multimillion dollar research building complete with classrooms, an amphitheater, wetland, solar and aquaculture labs was dedicated in 2008. The outside of the building is designed with a miniature KOE (Kissimmee-Okeechobee-Everglades) landscape so students could have an accurate replica of some of what they are learning right outside their front door. Culpepper says specialized field trips, even those right on campus, have been a big part of their success.”We take kids outside to study the environment,” she said. Throughout the year, magnet students also visit other schools in the area to serve as ER, or Everglades Restoration, ambassadors where they talk to students about conservation and protecting our eco-system. The school’s award-winning solar power car, the Solar Knight, also goes on the road often to help educate about energy alternatives. Culpepper says it is what the magnet program was intended to do. “Our program has brought an awareness of the importance of youth learning good environmental stewardship. The future is our youth today,” said Culpepper. To help celebrate the 10th anniversary, the program will host a Green Gala May 10 to honor youth environmental stewardship, and award scholarships to deserving seniors. The event is open to the public. Tickets are $25 per person, and $10 for magnet students. ting the window actually enters the home. Lower numbers are better. Standard double-pane windows have a SHGC of 0.76, meaning 76% of the solar energy gets into the home. Add Luminette Privacy sheers and watch that number drop down to as low as 0.20. With energy prices rising, you’ll want to save as much as you can. At Beautiful Windows we have many different options to help you save money. Daylighting - This is the practice of lighting rooms with natural light rather than generating illumination from electricity. The sheers from these products actually diffuse light as it enters and help draw it deeper into the room. Plus, you can direct incoming light where it is needed most by tilting the louvers and slats. Another added advantage is that the sheers on the Silhouette actually keep out 80% of the incoming UV to protect upholstery, flooring and art from fading. When you visit us, ask to see our oversized Silhouette with room darkening features to keep your master room cozy & cool. Motorization - Flipping a wall switch to operate your shades beats having to go window to window to operate each blind individually. Wall switches and remotes can be programmed to handle multiple shades individually or in unison. The “platinum technology” from Hunter Douglas can be integrated into any home automation system. View Through - If view is important, then you want the “4” Silhouette because it offers the most “view through” (space between louvers). It brings the beauty of the outdoors in. The Luminette marries the beauty of sheers with the privacy of soft draperies and allows you to rotate the vanes for infinite degrees of light control. Living smart - Going green is about making small changes that can have a large impact: Energy costs dollars – so the more energy we save, the fewer dollars we spend. Plus, by saving money and energy resources, we leave a healthier world to future generations. Living smart is the best choice for everyone.

The Fun Always Shines at By DOREEN ROBINSON
A PCDC camper poses with his creative self-portrait.
S
ome things get better with age, such as Pine Crest Day Camp.
This summer marks its 53rd season of entertaining children from all over south Florida. Throughout the years, PCDC has built a positive reputation among campers and parents alike. Approximately 100,000 campers have had the summer of a lifetime, and many of them have “grown up” at PCDC and gone on to become staff members. Many PCDC alumni now send their own children to the camp with the assurance that their children are safe, happy and entertained at one of the best camps in the county. Karen Dunne has been a part of the PCDC team for decades, and has been running the camp as Executive Director since 1996. The fact that she is only the third director that PCDC has ever had speaks to the fact that the camp is like a close-knit family. A lot has changed since the camp’s humble beginnings in 1959 on the old campus of Pine Crest School on East Broward Boulevard. The school and camp moved to its present location in northeast Broward County in 1965. The sprawling campus is situated on 49 acres and features three swimming pools, three auditoriums and two gymnasiums. Pine Crest Day Camp is among the largest summer camps in our nation, operating exclusively on one site. Pine Crest Day Camp (Ft. Lauderdale) currently enrolls just under 900 children daily and supervises them with approximately 250 high school and college students. Dunne credits what she calls a revolving door of over 40 kid-happy activities for PCDC’s popularity among campers. PCDC is the total package, perfect for the camper that likes to participate in a range of activities throughout the day. “I believe that our campers love the PCDC experience because of the variety of activities that we have,” says Dunne. “It is not often that kids can attend one camp that allows them to get a taste of so many uncommon offerings such as Spy School, Lacrosse, Magic, Archery, Zip Lines across the lake, Climbing Walls, and Cookie Crafts to name just a few.” These are in addition to the more traditional camp activities such as swimming, diving, soccer, miniature golf, arts ‘n crafts, and video games, she notes. Choosey parents choose PCDC for a several reasons, Dunne explains. “We have been a summer mainstay in Broward County for 53 years now. Our long history and reputation stands unmatched in our area. In fact, many of our parents were once PCDC
22
campers who now, so many years later, want their kids to have the same wonderful summer experiences that they had.” She also notes that parents like the ‘all-inclusive’ factor at PCDC. “We don’t take field trips,” explains Dunne. “Actually, there is little reason to do so, since resources such as giant waterslides, bounce houses, stage shows, and live entertainment come right to us.” Movies are now shown in the 950 seat auditorium, as is the popular Morning Show. The lake that stands in the middle of the campus is home to Hydro-bikes, Kayaks, and Paddle Boats. Kids now find Electric Guitars, Adventure Climbing Towers, Speed Stacking, Nintendo Game Rooms, and sky-high water slides on their schedules. Parades, costume days, and even kid-friendly lunches served in a state-of-the-art dining room (complete with big screen TVs), have all been lined up to form the framework of great summer experiences for PCDC campers. The staff at PCDC is yet another factor in the equation. Dunne notes that a majority of the approximately 180 staff members actually began as counselors-in-training and return for many seasons. Some counselors have been with PCDC for six years or longer and some have even made it into the camp’s “Decade Club.” Dunne could not run PCDC without the expertise of her Assistant Director, Kristen Davis, who began as a five-year-old camper, turned counselor, turned administrator. “Having spent every summer here as a child, my summer memories are the perfect memories of an enriching childhood,” says Davis. “Fun and caring counselors taught me how to swim, roller skate, play football, twirl a baton, climb a wall, and even shoot a bow and arrow! Davis feels lucky to be a part of the PCDC administrative team, working under the creative vision of Karen Dunne. “Together, we are dedicated to making perfect summer memories for every child attending the great South Florida tradition that is Pine Crest Day Camp,” says Davis. Registration for the 2011 summer session is under way for campers, ages 4-11. Bus transportation, early drop-off and late stay are available. Pine Crest Day Camp is located at 1501 Northeast 62nd Street in Fort Lauderdale. Visit www.pinecrestdaycamp.com or call 954-492-4137 for more information.

Understanding Coronary Artery Disease By Wendy S. Levenson EdD, RN Director of Education, Westside regional Medical Center
Y
our coronary arteries are blood vessels on the heart. They are
smooth and elastic, allowing blood to flow freely. The blood carries oxygen and other nutrients to your heart.
Coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for men and women. Coronary heart disease is caused by the buildup of plaque in the arteries to your heart. This buildup causes the arteries to get narrow. As a result, blood flow to the heart can slow down or stop. Symptoms of coronary heart disease may be very obvious, but sometimes you can have coronary heart disease and not have any symptoms. Chest pain is the most common symptom. You feel this pain when the heart is not getting enough blood or oxygen. The amount of pain varies from person to person. You may have a heavy feeling on your chest like someone is squeezing your heart. You may feel the pain under your breast bone, in your neck, arms, stomach, or upper back. The pain usually occurs with activity or emotion, and goes away with rest or a medicine called nitroglycerin. Other symptoms include shortness of breath and fatigue with activity. The following risk factors for coronary heart disease cannot be changed; your family history of coronary heart disease and your age, as the risk of heart disease increases with age. Another factor is your gender; men have a higher risk of getting heart disease than women who are still getting their menstrual period. After menopause, the risk for women is closer to the risk for men. Your genes play a role too. If your parents or other close relatives had heart disease, you are at higher risk. African Americans, Mexican Americans, American Indians, Hawaiians, and some Asian Americans have a higher risk for heart problems. The following risk factors for coronary heart disease can be changed: ▸▸ Smoking. The worst thing you can do for your heart is smoke. The risk of heart attack is twice as high for smokers as for nonsmokers, and smokers who suffer a heart attack are more likely to die within an hour of the attack. The good news is, no matter how long or how much you’ve smoked, your risk of coronary heart disease will rapidly decline as soon as you quit smoking. ▸▸ High cholesterol levels. Higher cholesterol levels increase the risk of coronary heart disease because cholesterol builds up on artery walls. Adults over 35 years of age should have their cholesterol levels measured at least once every five years. ▸▸ High blood pressure. High blood pressure can also increase your risk for heart attack. Often blood pressure can be kept under control by limiting salt intake, exercising regularly, avoiding excessive alcohol intake, and maintaining a healthy weight. For high blood pressure that doesn’t respond to these measures, medication can keep it within healthy limits. ▸▸ Obesity and inactivity. People who are too heavy for their height are more likely to develop coronary heart disease, even with no other risk factors. ▸▸ Diabetes. Diabetes can make coronary heart disease worse in many different ways. High blood glucose can cause elevated levels of blood fats and cholesterol, promote injury to the inside of blood vessels, and affect the immune system. ▸▸ Stress. Most doctors believe that high levels of stress can also increase the risk of coronary heart disease. For a free referral to a primary care physician in the area, contact Westside Regional Medical Center’s toll-free physician referral and health information line at 1-800-618-2631.

A Typical Rear End Crash By Dr. Jeffrey Berard
Y
ou are minding your own business while stopped
at an intersection waiting for a green light when someone crashes into your rear fender. After the initial shock, you do not find any damage to either car, but you exchange insurance information and decide to call a policeman to report the accident. The patrolman writes his report and notes that there are no injuries reported and there is no apparent damage. More than 2 million such accidents are reported every year nationwide. Many more are never reported because people are in a hurry and they do not realize that these accidents cause real damage to the ligaments in the neck and the cervical spine. The pain symptoms are usually delayed and can start days, or even weeks later. People that do have pain symptoms are sent to the hospital to check for serious spinal injuries and released. But the fact is, injuries can occur in low speed accidents with no apparent damage to your car. We monitor ongoing research produced by the Spinal Research Center of San Diego, which is an organization that specializes in whiplash and the resulting trauma. Crash tests are organized each year to train physicians, and the details presented are based on actual research and crash tests recorded with a high speed camera and technical instruments connected to the drivers.
Why Did You Get Hurt?
Most rear end accidents occur at speeds less than 20 mph, so how can they be that dangerous? The reason is very simple. Part of the design is to make bumpers withstand low speed crashes of 12 mph, yet the threshold of injury proven by research is only 5 mph. This means that if your car is stopped for traffic then is propelled to a speed of only 5 mph by another car, that is enough energy to produce a whiplash injury. The accident takes place over the short period of only 300 milliseconds, or less than one-third of a second. The reaction of your torso and head can be described in four phases as follows: 1. The initial phase starts with the torso moving backward into the seat back with the spine straightening. the head rises a few inches because of the spine straightening . 2. At this point in the sequence, the vehicle is at peak acceleration, which is 1.5 to 2 times the acceleration of the vehicle. The head has not yet begin to move forward and continues to move backward, and slack may develop in the shoulder harness. The head comes down on the headrest causing tension and shear in the neck, and worse possibly the chance for flexion injury. 3. In the third phase, the head and neck are at peak acceleration and the vehicle acceleration has stopped. The brake pressure is probably reapplied, which accentuates the deceleration phase and increases the chance for a flexion injury. 4. In the final phase, full flexion occurs against the restraint system and the occupant experiences high neck tension, torsion and compression. This is the most injurious phase of the whiplash. K-Kids Ready to Make a Difference in Community clean-up of graffiti and foul words defacing school property. “We want to keep our school nice so people will want to come,” said Zane Hight, 11, a 5th grader who is the President of the K-Kids. Another potential project on tap includes caring for the school’s butterfly garden, which was planted just a few months ago. McGonigle says K-Kids provides young students with the experience necessary to go on to Kiwanis service clubs in middle school, known as Builders Clubs, and then to high school Key Clubs. The Kiwanis Club of Plantation has Key Clubs at Plantation High, South Plantation High, and the American Heritage School. Karen Diamond put two children through Plantation Park in the 70’s and then volunteered at the school for 12 years. She’s now a member of the Kiwanis Club and is proud to be a part of the launching of the club’s K-Kids program. “Anything we can do to get the kids involved in the community is wonderful. To introduce them to service, volunteerism and helping their neighbor and all that goes with that is important. It helps build character,” she said.

anking on the idea that it is never
too early to teach children about the importance of helping their community, the Kiwanis Club of Plantation has embarked on a new project with the students at Plantation Park Elementary School. They’ve created their first ever “K-Kids” program to get elementary-age students interested in community service. “This is a club for children who want to be involved in a community activity, where they get to decide the projects they’ll be doing to help out,” said Jim McGonigle, the Treasurer of the Kiwanis Club of Plantation. K-Kids is a national Kiwanis program and is the largest student-led, community-service organization for elementary school students nationwide. This is the first time it has been introduced in Plantation and already 15 students in grades 3-5 at Plantation Park have signed up to be a part of it. They meet once a week, under the guidance of Kiwanis Club members and South Plantation High School Key Club members. Their first two meetings provided a chance to elect officers, and start talking about projects they wanted to do around the school and the community. One of the first projects launched was a school-wide

46th Annual Super Bowl, it was a bowl of a different sort that had Will Allen’s attention. On January 24, the veteran Miami Dolphin cornerback helped local students create hand-crafted paper bowls that were to be used for charity. Allen visited Tropical Elementary School to help drive home the point about giving back to the community. “It’s my second time visiting this school,” Allen said. “It’s good to come in here and let the kids see

The bowls were created out of colored paper, that was put in a blender with water and then strained to make a type of paper clay. Hodges, and students from her art club, took Allen step by step through the process, and then the NFL star sat with students and helped formed the mixture into bowls. As Allen carefully put his bowl together, several of the students looked on in admiration as an NFL player worked in their midst. “It’s like awesome. It blows my mind to have him here,” said Art teacher Libby Hodges, and students Alex Andra, Garett Schindeler and Anna Thony work Vincent Langnecker, 8. with Miami Dolphin player Will Allen. Why Should You Get Orthodontic Treatment? Dr. Felipe Norena
T
he goal of orthodontic
treatment is a good bite- meaning straight teeth that mesh well with the teeth in the opposite jaw. A good bite makes it easier for you to bite, chew and speak. This can enhance your dental health, and your overall health, and may improve self-esteem. Orthodontic treatment is often a part of a comprehensive dental health care plan. With good care, including orthodontic treatment when necessary, teeth can last a lifetime. Treatment in children or teenagers who are still growing may yield results that may not be possible once the face and jaws have completed their growth. A healthy bite is as important at the age of 60, as it is at age 16. Even though adults are no longer growing, they can also enjoy improvements that can come from orthodontic treatment. Your age is not a consideration for orthodontic treatment. Healthy teeth can be moved at any age. In fact, about one in every five orthodontic patients today is over age 18. Thanks to today’s smaller, less visible, more comfortable orthodontic appliances, including fixed braces and removable appliances, adults
are finding treatment more appealing. The AAO recommends that your child get an orthodontic check-up no later the age 7. By this age, orthodontists can spot subtle problems with jaw growth and emerging teeth while some baby teeth are still present. Some orthodontic treatment may be easier to correct if they’re found early. Most orthodontic patients begin active treatment between the ages of 9 and 14. Orthodontists are dental specialists who diagnose, prevent and treat dental and facial irregularities. The receive an additional two to three years of specialized education beyond dental school to learn the proper way to align and straighten teeth. Only those with this formal education may call themselves orthodontists and only orthodontists may be members of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO). Orthodontic treatment is a smart investment in your dental, physical and emotional health. Norena Orthodontics is located in the northeast corner of Sunrise Blvd and Nob Hill Road. Drs Felipe and Ana Maria Norena have a combined orthodontic experience of
35 years. Dr. Felipe received his orthodontic degree from Saint Louis University and Dr. Ana Maria graduated from the Orthodontic program at Nova Southeastern University. Three Keys to an Effective Loan Modification By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
T
here are countless homeowners accepting loan modifications
in which their resulting payment is actually higher than their original mortgage payment, and the resulting principal balance owed is far greater than the home is worth. Still other homeowners end up losing their homes because they are unable to complete a loan modification before the home is sold at public auction. These homeowners were apparently unaware of the following three keys to an effective and sustainable loan modification.
Principal Reduction Alternative
If your home is worth significantly less than you owe on it, you may be eligible for a Principal Reduction Alternative (PRA) under a Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP). To be eligible for PRA, the home must also be occupied as your primary residence, you must be either delinquent or in danger of falling behind on your payments, and your mortgage payment must be more than 31% of your gross monthly income. If you qualify for PRA, the principal balance on your home loan is reduced to the current market value of your home. This allows you to continue making affordable mortgage payments on a long term basis. Other eligibility criteria may apply for PRA, and we encourage you to seek legal advice before submitting a PRA request to your lender.
Second Lien Modification Program
If your first mortgage was permanently modified under HAMP, and you have a second mortgage on the same property, you may be eligible for a modification or principal reduction on your second mortgage under the Second Lien Modification Program (2MP). In order to qualify for 2MP, your lender must also participate in the program, and you must be current on your HAMP modification.
Defend While You Modify
The third key is ensuring that the lender does not foreclose on your home before you loan modification is finalized. As explained in previous articles, just because you’ve applied for a loan modification does not mean that your lender will stop the foreclosure of your home. Unless you hire a qualified and experienced law firm to defend your interests in the foreclosure, all the time and energy spent attempting to modify your home loan may be wasted. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new instructional DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight for Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a FREE copy when you make an appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm at 1-800-770-7102 to schedule a free consultation, or visit www.arcialawfirm.com for more information.

Fungal Infection of Toenails By Dr. Iliya Beylin
F
ungal infection of toenails, also known as
onychomycosis, is a common condition that we see in the office. It is the most common disease of the nails and constitutes about a half of all nail abnormalities. Up to 10% of all adults in Western countries have fungal nails. This percentage increases to 20% of adults who are age 60 or older. The nail plate can have a thickened, yellow, black, or cloudy appearance. The nails can become rough and crumbly, or can separate from the nail bed. There is usually no pain or other bodily symptoms, unless the disease is severe. In normal, healthy people, fungal nails are most commonly caused by fungus that is caught from moist, wet areas. Communal showers, such as those at a gym, or swimming pools are common sources. Athletes have been proven to be more susceptible to the fungus. This is presumed to be due to the wearing of tight-fitting, sweaty shoes associated with repetitive trauma to the toenails. Having athlete’s foot makes it more likely that the fungus will infect your toenails. People with certain underlying disease states are also at higher risk. These include certain autoimmune disorders such as psoriasis and inflammatory bowel disease. Also, anything that impairs your immune system can make you prone to getting infected with the fungus. These include conditions such as diabetes, cancer, AIDS or taking any immunosuppressive medications like steroids.

The light is focused on the fungus directly. In essence, the laser energy heats the fungus to the point that it is killed but does not burn the surrounding tissue. This treatment is painless, safe and promising in terms of its effectiveness.

Why Do I Need a Deep Cleaning? By Dr. Uttma Dham
H
aven’t you asked that question to your dentist
before and often come away unconvinced that you need the procedure because you think teeth cleaning is a cleaning, what’s the difference? First of all, I would like to explain that there is no such thing as teeth cleaning in dental terminology. There are three terms that are used, prophylaxis, scaling and root planning and debridement. Prophylaxis, as the term suggests is a prophylactic (preventive) cleaning which is done when people have healthy gums and have usually kept up with their dental health by making regular visits to their dentist. Scaling and root planning is a procedure, usually referred to as deep cleaning, which is a periodontal therapy that is done in patients with gum disease like gingivitis and periodontitis. This procedure is a non surgical way of fighting gum disease. Unlike the prophylaxis, where the gums are health and the plaque and tartar is minimal and above the gums only, scaling is the process by which plaque and tartar are removed from both above the gums (supragingival) and below the gums (subgingival). How do you know you have gum disease? Usually on your exam with the dentist, there is a periodontal evaluation done which involves doing a pocket charting. Pocket charting is the measuring of the space between your gums and teeth. In a normal healthy mouth that space is called sulcus and is 2-3mm in depth. When you have a gum disease the space increases because of bacterial invasion from plaque and tartar and now the depth is 4mm and higher. The higher the number, the worse the situation is. Along with that there will be bleeding, redness of gums and sometimes pus and bad breath. Scaling and root planning involves administration of local anesthesia. Plaque and calculus (tartar) are removed and parts of root surfaces are smoothed. This “planes” the roots under the gum to provide a smooth surface for gums to reattach. Usually the treatment requires 2-3 hours over a couple of visits and hence the cost of this is much higher than a prophylactic cleaning. After the treatment, the gums are reevaluated after a few weeks and the pockets are measured again. Most of the time, the pockets will decrease and gums will shrink. There are some associated side effects. After the root planning the teeth can temporarily become sensitive to hot and cold. As the gums shrink after the treatment, the gums get healthy reducing the puffiness and causing the spaces to appear between the teeth. You may also experience some recession of gums but either situation is better than leaving gum disease not treated properly. Last, but certainly not least, a few words about “Debridement”. That is a term used when a person has excessive calculus (tartar) present and that must be removed first to even diagnose the level of gum disease. Dr Uttma Dham is a Plantation-based dentist practicing general and cosmetic dentistry at Westside Dental Center, located at 180 SW 84th Avenue, Ste D, Plantation, Fl-33324.Her practice focuses on providing quality care and prevention of dental disease. Her office can be reached at 954-476-4535.
