t’s hard to believe, but the tropical South Florida heat is with us again. The sun is burning down and the air conditioners are humming at full blast. While we are trying to decide between pool or beach, our kids are already looking forward to their summer break, and we are hurriedly making last minute arrangements for summer camps and family vacations.

Summer Camp June 20th to July14th Why is Camp IDA “Simply the Best”?

nternational Dance Academy is gearing up for a summer camp program that is Simply the Best! Our one of a kind fine arts experience offers all levels of ballet, pre-pointe, pointe, jazz, strength and conditioning, choreography, voice, sewing and crafting.

Known for our exceptionally high caliber ballet programming during the school year, IDA expands to a full-scale fine arts dance camp during the summer. Don’t delay as Camp IDA closes out on an annual basis in our fully equipped and superior dance complex which includes sprung flooring, mirrors and multilevel ballet barres. With differentiated teaching, IDA’s boutique environment offers a less intimidating yet professional atmosphere for new dancers and advanced dancers looking to quickly perfect their techniques, round out their dance education, make amazing friendships, and have spectacular fun! We accept dancers from age 6 and up, with no prior dance experience necessary. Camper placement is based on age and level. We welcome dancers of all levels, from Beginners through Advanced. Our goal is to share methods and technique to help dancers progress to the next level as stronger all around performers. Dancers will improve their technical skill, flexibility and strength. Parents are inspired and comforted by our detailed approach to each child. A typical day at the camp includes morning ballet class with an emphasis on conditioning and technique, followed by a show stopping Broadway jazz class. After lunch the dancers are excited for their afternoon fine arts extravaganza with professional sewing class, voice training and crafting. Dancers are taught music appreciation and encouraged to choreograph and improvise their own dances, which are shown at the final, end of camp performance for parents and friends. Costumes are stunning and backdrops painted to showcase the progress achieved by all dancers.

Plantation Businessman Donates Shoes to Women in Need By Julie Levin

he women who come to Women in Distress looking for a place to stay sometimes leave their abusive partners with nothing but the clothes on the back and the shoes on their feet. If they leave in the night they might come in slippers. Others just have a pair of old flip-flops because their husbands won’t give them enough money for something better. To get a job or even just a boost of selfconfidence, they sometimes need an upgrade in footwear. That’s where Robert Feldman, owner of Feldman Pedorthics and Footcare Boutique, steps in. The Plantation Pedorthist has collected and delivered close to 2000 pairs of new and gently used shoes for those in need since 2006. Recently, he planned to make his latest donation; delivering several dozen pair of shoes to Women In Distress of Broward County, which currently operates a 62 bed emergency shelter. In April, they planned to expand to 100 beds at a new facility in Deerfield Beach, along with an outreach center and a thrift store. Feldman said making the shoes available to women in need is vital towards helping them get back on their feet. “We think healthy footwear is really more of a necessity then a luxury and it is one that we want to offer as many women as we can,” said Feldman. Previously, Feldman has donated and helped fit shoes for the residents of the Broward Outreach Center in Hollywood. He spent hours at the shelter, talking with the residents, and helping to fit their feet with a selection of new shoes he donated from his business. Boxes and bags of shoes donated by the community ready to be donated. For years, he has also col-

lected and then shipped shoes to Soles4Soul a Nashville-based charity that collects shoes from around the country. The charity distributes these shoes to people in need, regardless of race, religion, class, or any other criteria. Since 2005, Soles4Souls has given away over 13 million pairs of new and gently worn shoes. Plantation Gets Ready to Celebrate the Arts By Julie Levin

hat’s in store in the world of arts and culture in Plantation? The city is getting set to host its annual arts event to help spread the word about all that is going on. The Arts of Plantation, A Cultural Celebration, will be held Thursday, May 12th from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., at the Plantation Hoffman Library and Historical Museum Campus. Ken Boyce, the Superintendent of Recreation for the City of Plantation, said the event was created to highlight the variety of cultural groups, programs and individual artists that enhance the quality of life in Plantation. “It provides a venue for the public to see what is available in the way of cultural activities in our community,” said Boyce. The Arts of Plantation, A Cultural Celebration was created in 2007. Since then, hundreds of people have turned out each year to check out the various cultural art offerings, including art and dance programs, cultural groups, museums and more. This year, the event will feature a Children’s Dinosaur Dig, a display by the Plantation Art Guild, several artists creating and/or talking about their work, live music by local musicians, a Florida Pirate Camp with pirate sword fights throughout the evening, a Puppet Show by the Plantation Puppeteers, a Seminole Indian exhibit & talk, free refreshments and more. www.plantationtowntimes.com

Guests will also be able to take in the Planta tion Historical Museum’s on-going exhibit called “Plantation: Then & Now”. There is also a promotional film created by the Plantation Chamber of Commerce and the city in the 1960’s that was designed to entice people to move to the growing city. But it wasn’t until two years ago, that Michael decided to do more. He raised money by composing a letter that he sent out to family, friends and his parents co-workers. In the letter, he explained the statistics, his mission and what life was like for him with two brothers with autism. “I have seen what autism can do and how hard it can be. Also, there is no cure and not a lot of money from the government to help find a cure,” he said. In addition to fundraising, he also spent part of his summer volunteering at The Mailman Segal Center’s Baudhuin Preschool, located on the main campus of Nova Southeastern University, is an internationally recognized, model program for children with autism spectrum disorders. He help create projects for the youngsters, and shared his time and attention with them. He also worked as a volunteer at the walk, and encourages everyone to get involved. “You know how bad cancer, and AIDS is. This is just as bad and we need to find a cure,” he said.

t only 13 years old, Michael Rollins is proving to be a fundraiser on an adult level. Rollins, a 7th grader at Plantation Middle School, recently surpassed his own efforts and raised thousands of dollars to help battle autism, a cause close to his heart. Michael raised $4,000 for the Walk Now for Autism Speaks which was held April 9th on the campus of Nova Southeastern University in Davie, in front of the Alvin Sherman Library. Autism Speaks is a familyfriendly event held at locations across the country that is an important source of funding for autism-related research. Last year, Michael raised $3,000, making him one of the top three fundraisers at NSU. “I am just glad to be part of the walk,” Michael said. There is not a cure yet, But I hope there will be soon.” Michael’s fundraising is motivated by a love of family. He is one of four brothers, and two of his siblings struggle with autism. He said having two siblings with autism can be trying at times, and people don’t always understand the effects of the disorder. That’s why in addition to raising money, he also hopes to raise awareness and education. Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability in the United States and Rollins is only too aware of the statistics. One in every 110 children

fitness forum Five Reasons That Diets Fail Ellen Latham, MS

o, many clients who work out at my facility refer to themselves as Professional Dieters. They have tried every weight loss plan, scheme, and promise under the sun and have failed over and over. The following five reasons are usually the reasons why.

Reason #1

They were not ready to make a full time commitment. Weight loss is at least 50% attitude. Do you want the truth? Do not start a weight loss program unless you are ready. ADVICE: Do some serious soul searching and figure out what your personal motivation is to shed the extra weight. The motivation has to come from you. Then you need to recharge that motivation everyday if you are going to make it. I am a firm believer that short term goals are more important than long term goals in this situation.

Reason #2

You expect miracles. You have unreasonable expectations in regard to how much weight you should be losing. You will end up very disappointed and fall off the wagon. ADVICE: I know you are looking for that quick fix. It does not exist, even if that infomercial says you will lose 20 pounds in one hour. Snap out of it. If you stay slow and steady you will be on your way to fantastic end results.

Reason #3

You’re on a ridiculous plan. If you’re following an extreme weight loss plan (i.e. the cabbage soup diet) where it does not remotely resemble normal eating, there is a good chance you will fail. You may lose some weight but I guarantee it is back on within a week. ADVICE: A good food plan is based on healthy foods that keep you satisfied and energized, not cranky. This food adjustment should be a launching pad for long term lifestyle change.

Reason #4

You had a breakdown and ate two pieces of cake and started falling apart. You tell yourself, “I already ruined everything so I might as well give up.” ADVICE: Don’t dwell on your mistakes. Instead, shake it off and get right back on track at your very next meal…..or the next day

Reason #5

You do not include proper fat-burning, metabolism-raising exercises in the mix. ADVICE: A fast metabolism is critical to burning fat and managing body weight. he College of Journalism and Communications at the University of Florida recently honored a Plantation resident with a prestigious honor. Julie Silver Talenfeld, the founder and President of Boardroom Communications, was named one of four 2011 Alumni of Distinction honorees. Talenfeld now joins a small group of only 112 people selected to receive the honor since its inception in 1970, an impressive feat considering the college boasts more than 24,000 graduates with degrees in advertising, journalism, public relations and telecommunications. Joining Talenfeld as Distinguished Alumni were Mitchell J. Habib (Advertising, 1982), the Chief Operating Officer of The Nielsen Company , Skip Perez (Journalism, 1969), the recently retired executive editor of The Lakeland Ledger and CNN News reporter and India Bureau Chief Sara Sidner (Telecommunications, 1985). “The College of Journalism and Communications holds a place near and dear to my heart,” Talenfeld said. “I graduated with a strong, working knowledge of the print and broadcast news industry, and know my accomplishments would not have come without the great foundation I gained at UF.” Talenfeld graduated from the college’s Department of Telecommunications in 1984 with a degree in broadcast journalism. She went on to a successful career in television

and radio news, before launching Boardroom Communications at the age of 25. Her company posted 2010 revenues approaching $2 million. “Julie is one of the most dynamic, forwardthinking and successful communications professionals in the state of Florida,” said Dr. John Wright II, Dean of the College of Journalism and Communications. “She’s also a wonderful person with an engaging and positive personality. I’m proud that she is an alumna of the College of Journalism and Communications and a former student of mine.” Born in North Miami Beach to veteran CBS television reporter Ben Silver, Talenfeld began her career after college interning and working as a Washington, DC-based writer and associate producer for CNN’s awardwinning show, Crossfire. At 22, she founded the Florida Business Report, the first statewide business radio show. Talenfeld later directed P.R. for a 20-office, $100 million New York investment banking firm. Talenfeld launched Boardroom soon after. Today, the firm employs 14 people, half of whom also attended the University of Florida. City of Plantation Hosts Calendar Photo Contest By Julie Levin

The City of Plantation is currently looking for photos for its 2012 city calendar, and they are hoping local residents, and their cameras, can provide what they are looking for. They are sponsoring their first ever Calendar Photo contest, and will be taking entries through July 15 at 5 p.m. They began accepting photos in mid-April. Would be photographers looking to help out have a wide range of topics to choose from. The city is looking for photos that help capture the experience of life in Plantation in an

endless variety of ways. school news Volunteers, Supplies Needed to Help Spruce up Plantation Middle By Julie Levin

f you don’t mind getting your hands dirty, or can donate plants, bushes, or other gardening supplies, Plantation Middle School wants to hear from you. The school, located at 7700 West Sunrise Boulevard, has been gradually updating its landscaping through the work of its Parent-Teacher Organization, and has now come to a standstill due to a lack of funds. “”We will take donations of time because we still need to remove the overgrowth that is there so we can get in there and plant,” said Lana Henning, the Vice President of Special Events with the Plantation Middle School PTO. The school of approximately 850 students has already received volunteer help from the First Baptist Church of Fort Lauderdale. Marsha Bell, the parent of a seventh grader at the school, was so impressed with the PTO’s fundraising efforts to beautify the school, that she arranged for a group A look at what one of the areas at Plantation Middle School from her church to come and that has been cleared, and in need of new landscaping. help clean out old shrubbery and overgrowth in October. Working with Plantation Middle parents and members of the school’s National Junior Honor Society, they also came back in March to cleanout more areas and add mulch. “They wanted to take us on as one of their community outreach projects,” said Henning.

The idea to give Plantation Middle a make-over came about over the summer, when PTO, working with the administration, decided the landscaping around the school had been neglected for long enough. “We wanted the school to set a better impression when you walk up to it,” said Henning, whose son Nick is in the seventh grade at Plantation Middle. They began fundraising and were able to raise enough to re-landscape a few areas around the school, but know there is much more to be done. The students, all a part of the school’s PASS program, had the opportunity to learn how to handle and create flower arrangements. “They were thrilled, they had a great time and the staff could not have been more helpful,” said Sherri Auten-Wallace, the Pass/Sphere instructor at South Plantation High. The special flower arranging class took place March 4 at Field of Flowers, located at 5101 South University Drive in Davie. legally speaking The Importance of Uninsured Motorist Coverage in Florida By Howard Citron

s an attorney handling automobile accident claims in South Florida, I frequently counsel individuals to select an insurance policy that best fits their needs. Many times, consumers do not understand the importance of carrying Uninsured Motorist coverage in Florida. Do not confuse Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage with Uninsured Motorist (UM) coverage. Drivers in this state are required to carry $10,000.00 in PIP insurance. PIP covers someone that is injured in an accident regardless of whether they are at fault for the crash. Florida law provides that PIP shall cover eighty percent (80%) of medical bills and sixty percent (60%) of lost wages when a person is injured in an accident. This coverage is paid out as the person receives treatment or submits proof of lost wages. However, when someone is injured in an accident, often the coverage provided by PIP is insufficient to fully compensate them for their damages. In Florida, drivers are not required to carry Bodily Injury (BI) coverage. Therefore, if the person that caused the accident did not purchase BI coverage, fled the scene of the crash or carried insufficient coverage, there will not be insurance available to compensate the injured person for their full measure of damages unless they purchased UM coverage. Recent reports indicate that 25-30% of drivers in Florida do not maintain BI coverage. This number is increasing because of the economic climate. Unfortunately, we have seen more and more clients that are the victims of a severe crash where the responsible party did not have BI coverage or their policy limits were insufficient to compensate them for their damages. This is when UM coverage becomes essential. Under Florida law, an insurance company must offer drivers the option to purchase as much UM coverage as liability coverage. Many professionals decide to purchase large amounts of liability coverage to protect themselves and their assets in the event they cause an accident. Unfortunately, these professionals do not understand the importance of also obtaining UM coverage to protect them in the event they are hit by someone with minimal or no bodily injury coverage. It also protects them if they are a victim of a hit-and-run accident. UM coverage can be used to pay for an individual’s medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering as well as future costs and expenses relating to their injuries. We always make it a point to review a client’s insurance policy and emphasize the importance of obtaining adequate UM coverage. On The Menu, a Gourmet European Cafe and Bistro, offers something never before seen in Davie. “We

redatory lending is when a lender imposes abusive, unfair and sometimes illegal loan terms on borrowers, without regard for the borrowers’ ability to repay the loan. When two or more of the following factors are contained in a mortgage loan transaction, the subsequent forensic audit performed on that transaction usually reveals serious violations of federal and state lending laws.

Property Purchased or Refinanced Between 2003 and 2007.

This four year period marked the peak of the real estate boom in South Florida. Just about anyone, including foreign nationals without any past credit history, could obtain a “sub-prime” loan for all the value of the mortgaged property. The sub-prime mortgage market thrived during this time, allowing borrowers to encumber their properties well beyond their true market values.

Mortgage Loan Contains an Adjustable Rate or “ARM” Feature.

These types of loans are initially set at an artificially low interest rate for a brief period of time. They then switch to an adjustable rate for the remaining term of the loan, and the rate can increase as often as every six months. Even if the U.S. interest rate index remains unchanged, the monthly payments on these loans could increase by up to 50%. These loans have the highest delinquency rate of any other loan product.

Mortgage Loan Contains Negative Amortization.

Negative amortization occurs when the monthly mortgage payment is not sufficient to even cover the interest due, and therefore, the balance of the loan increases over time even though payments have been made. If you owe more today on your home loan, than when you originally purchased or refinanced, your loan is negatively amortized.

Mortgage Loan is Interest-Only or Pick-a-Payment.

Under these types of loans, the borrower is only required to pay the interest due on the loan or some other minimal payment that does not even cover the interest on the loan. After a few years, the required monthly payment is usually increased to cover the outstanding balance. Once the loan payment is increased, so does the likelihood the borrower will default, and eventually be subjected to foreclosure.

Mortgage Loan Approval Based Only on Stated Income.

Roughly half of all sub-prime borrowers from 2003-2007 were given “stated income” loans, in which they were qualified based on statements in the loan application as to their income. These statements of income were largely unverified, and often the “stated income” required for the loan to be approved was the exact amount included in the application by the mortgage broker. If any of these factors apply to your current loan, you should at least have a professional forensic audit performed to find out whether you have any viable claims against your lender. If your claims are timely and properly raised, you may be entitled to reduce the amount you owe, or cancel your loan obligation altogether. Q: What you can do to prevent a stroke? A: A healthier lifestyle plays a big part in decreasing the chance of disability and death from stroke: stop or don’t smoke; exercise regularly; control high blood pressure; maintain ideal body weight; limit alcohol intake; control cholesterol; improve eating habits; take medication as directed; control diabetes and get regular check-ups.
