May’s Many Reasons to Celebrate

I

t’s hard to believe, but summer is just around the corner. The

days are getting longer and the temperatures are getting hotter. School children are now counting down the days until summer break, while parents are busy making last minute arrangements for summer camps and family vacations. In the midst of it all, Mother’s Day has snuck up on us. Let’s all take a little break to honor our mothers (and our wives) for all they do. Mothers work hard and without pause to care for us, look after us and pamper us each and every day. Celebrate Mother’s Day by pampering them for a change! This month, my staff and I are celebrating the newest member of our family of local community news publications, the Miramar Town Times. With five free monthly magazines, we are now able to provide engaging and informative community news, school news, expert advice columns and business profiles to 100,000 homes from the Dade County line all the way to Sunrise.

Return to Titanic By Julie Levin

A

s the world marks the centennial anniversary of the sinking

of the Titanic, a never-before displayed collection surrounding the doomed liner is making its debut at the Plantation Historical Museum. “Titanic-The Legacy Remains” was unveiled in mid-April, providing a unique look into one of the most extensive collections of all things Titanic. The exhibit, which will run through June 30th, is being presented by the Plantation Historical Museum. It features the collection of William Brower, Jr., a Coral Springsbased author who has been fascinated by the ship since he was a young boy. His collection, which numbers in the thousands, is making its first showing just in time for the 100th anniversary of the maritime disaster which took more than 1,500 lives. Among Brower’s more prized possessions, a piece of tile from the first class smoking room of the ship, and a photo of the liner as it left Belfast on its way to Southampton to pick up passengers. “This was autographed by Milvina Dean, the youngest survivor of the disaster who was just William Brower Jr. stands in front of a photo of the ship that was signed by the youngest survivor of the sinking

9 weeks old at the time of the sinking. She passed away only three years ago,” said Brower, who also recently finished writing a companion book the exhibit called “Touched by Titanic”. The exhibit is geared to give a complete history of the Titanic’s history. There are pieces of china, a piece of the wood base the engines sat on, a piece of coal, newspaper accounts of the ship’s sinking, a crystal model of the ship, photos and much more. The forward of Brower’s book was written by Angelica Harris, an author whose husband lost two great uncles aboard Titanic. Curtain Going Up On Tinsel Town Cabaret 2012 By Julie Levin

S

ingers, dancers, actors and musicians will once again take to the stage in

Plantation for the city’s annual talent show. Tinsel Town Cabaret 2012 is set for this month, and organizers are once again promising a show loaded with top-rated local talent. “We just look for complete variety and entertainment,” said Wes Lockard, the Special Events Coordinator for the city. Organized by the city’s Parks and Recreation Department, the fun-filled evening of family entertainment will be held May 11 at Volunteer Park. Tickets are $6 per person, and producers are recommending guests buy their seats ahead of time. As many as two dozen acts will take to the stage, all of whom had to take part in a series of auditions held earlier in the year. Producers put out a call for performers who could sing, dance, act or any combination of the performing arts. The competition was intense, with many would-be performers being turned away. Lockard says the auditions were still a great way for would-be performers to gain both exposure and experience, even if they aren’t selected. “Hopefully people who don’t make it will come back and try again next year. It’s a good way for them to get their feet wet and see if it’s really what they want to do,” said Lockard, who directs the show with Jack Takacs. Past performers have been so talented they have gone on to appear in commercials, films and television shows. The show began several years ago as a competition with prizes awarded, but has now turned into more of a showcase to spotlight local talent. Though many of the performers are from Plantation, the auditions draw entertainers from across South Florida. Past performers have come from as far as Miami to take their turn in the spotlight. The Tinsel Town Cabaret will be held Friday, May 11 at Volunteer Park, located at 12050 W. Sunrise Boulevard. Curtain goes up at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $6 per person and are available at Central Park before the show. Seating is limited and advance purchase is recommended. For more information, call 954-452-2510.

pening its doors in April of 2009, Davie Discount Liquors & Wine with the efforts of its owner Shiv Waghray and his various suppliers has amassed a respectable and eclectic wine department. Covering all major wine producing Countries with their respectable brands and varietals, including a kosher wine selection, Shiv strives to bring his customers the best that the wine world has to offer.

One other very important characteristic of this friendly, full service liquor and wine store is, if they don’t have it they will try very hard to get it for you so don’t be afraid to ask. One of the most impressive attributes in Davie Discounts wine department is their Cabernet Sauvignon selection. Cabernet Sauvignon is arguably the most popular red wine grape in the world today. Hailing from its homeland of France, specifically The Bordeaux Medoc/ Graves region, this varietal has also blossomed in Chile, Argentina, Australia, Washington State and Northern California its second home, Napa Valley and Sonoma County in particular. With careful winemaking and barrel ageing, Cabernet Sauvignon can produce some of the longest-living and most intriguing reds of all. Cabernet can be made in a softer style, but all the great Cabernet of the world generally requires some additional bottle-ageing to reach their peak. Big, rich and full-bodied in their youth, the tannins soften with age, usually five to eight years after vintage, although some legendary vintages can age gracefully for decades. Some common aroma and flavor descriptors or this varietal are black currant or cassis, blackberry, cedar, tobacco, mint, chocolate, black olive, black cherry and plum. Food pairing with this varietal includes Strong cheese, game, beef, ham, lamb and hearty salads. For best results Cabernet should be stored in 55 degrees and served between 63 to 68 degrees. Shiv has accumulated over 130 types of American Cabernets with an estimated 80% of those being from California. Whether you’re looking for an everyday wine or a special occasion bottle Davie Discount has wines ranging from $5.99 for a very drinkable budget wine in Rex Goliath Cabernet to the bold and amazing Rubicon Estate Cabernet at $169.00. The 2001 to 2006 California Cabernet vintages have produced high quality, spectacular wines. However, 2007 Cabernets especially from Napa Valley and Sonoma County reached new heights of quality. According to Wine Spectator, “More great Cabernets were made in Napa in 2007 than any other time or place in California history”. In honor of that spectacular vintage Davie Discount has selected some amazing wines from Napa as well as other notable regions for you to purchase, try and enjoy: Napa Cellars Cabernet Napa Valley, 2007 $24.99 BR Cohn Silver Label, Olive Hill North Coast Cabernet 2007, $17.99 Coppola Diamond Collection, California Cabernet 2007, $14.99 Robert Mondavi, Napa Valley Cabernet, $19.99 337, Lodi Cabernet 2007, $12.99 Francis Coppola, Directors Cut, Sonoma County Cabernet, $17.99 Estancia, Paso Robles Cabernet 2007, $12.99 Ferrari Carano, Alexander Valley Cabernet 2007, $24.99 Franciscan, Napa Valley Cabernet 2006, $17.99.

Please join Shiv every Friday night from 5 to 8pm for his weekly tasting and don’t forget to join their e-mailing list the next time you visit for tasting schedules as well as wine and spirits Super Specials. Wishing all a great holiday season and I hope to see you soon at Davie Discount Liquors and Wine.

Golf Classic to Benefit Seminole Middle School Law Program By Julie Levin

M

embers of West Broward’s legal

community will tee off this month on a new effort to help Plantation’s future litigators. The West Broward Bar Association (WBBA) is hosting the first ever West Broward Bar Inaugural Golf Classic May 12 in an effort to raise funds for the law students at Seminole Middle School. “It’s really a great cause,” said Michael Rajtar, the President of the WBBA.”It is

helping kids in our neighborhood and it is going to be a great event on a beautiful course.” The event will be held on Saturday, May 12 at the Plantation Preserve Golf Course and Club, located at 7050 W. Broward Boulevard in Plantation. It is open to golfers of all abilities and Rajtar is expecting a full field of up to 144 golfers. All proceeds will go to the DECAL, or Division of Enhanced Communication and Law program at Seminole Middle. DECAL is the only active non-magnet school government and law program in Broward County. Rajtar is hoping to raise as much as $25,000 that will be used to buy computers, law books and other materials for the next generation of law students. “They don’t have the resources to do any of this. So we are trying to help get it started so they can provide students with access to what it means to be a lawyer and what the legal system looks like and how it acts,” he said. The WBBA, which is a division of the Broward County Bar Association, has partnered with Seminole Middle and its DECAL program ever since the law organization’s creation in 2011. Since then, they’ve helped arrange field trips to the Broward County Courthouse where the students have met with judges, prosecutors, public defenders and other members of the legal system. The

Golf Classic is their latest mission to help the school’s law program.”We thought what a better way than to help fund this program that we’ve been involved with since the beginning,” said Rajtar, whose organization meets monthly at Plantation Preserve. The tournament is open to the public. Tickets are $100 per golfer and sponsorships are available starting at $250. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. and shotgun start tees off at 1 p.m. After the event, cocktails will be served from 5 – 6 p.m. followed by an awards dinner, silent auction and a raffle. To register online or for more information on the West Broward Bar Association, go to www.westbrowardbar.com.

Inspiring Individual

Plantation Woman Inducted into the Broward County Women’s Hall of Fame By Julie Levin

T

he Broward County Women’s Hall of Fame is

made up of a long and distinguished list of those who have promoted women’s rights in our community. New member Annette Corbett Gardiner says she is honored to have her name even mentioned amongst them. “I am excited, humbled and blessed to be nominated and then go through the process and be selected,” said Gardiner. The 52-year old Plantation resident was among seven woman formally welcomed into Broward’s Women’s Hall of Fame at the 21st annual induction ceremony and awards luncheon March 25. Hosted by the Broward County Women’s History Coalition, the annual event celebrates and honors those Broward County Women who have selflessly contributed to the progression and promotion of women. Past inductees include Blanche Ely, Claire Mitchel, Ivy Cromartie Stranahan, Commissioner Sue Gunzburger, Lori Parrish, Easter Lily Gates, Esther Rolle, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Laura Mae Jumper Osceola and many more. “These women exemplify the special attributes of Broward women and are a shining example for our next generation to follow,” said Joanne Grealy Richter, Broward County Women’s History Coalition President. Gardiner was nominated by a colleague at the Broward Healthy Start Coalition, where she works and helps run the Family Connections Mentoring Project for pregnant and parenting women and the Teen Empowerment Program. Her main goal--encouraging

teen moms to work towards getting an education. Gardiner says while there are services and programs that help young mothers take care of their babies, there was really no one empowering them to take care of themselves by getting an education, which could lead to a career. A teen mom herself many years ago, Gardiner feels passionate about getting that message out and making a difference. “Somebody needs to take that role,” she said. Married for 25 years to husband Joseph, Gardiner is also the mother of four as well as a grandmother. She was involved in the PTA/PTSO throughout her children’s schooling, and currently serves on the Broward Human Trafficking Coalition and as First Vice Chair of the Broward County Commission on the Status of Women. “I am very honored to be included amongst these very empowered women who were inducted with me,” she said. The other inductees are: Lottie Albert of Sunrise, Lauderhill Commissioner Margaret Bates, Susan Forman, Hallandale Beach Commissioner Dorothy “Dotty” Ross, Gretchen Gettemy Thompson of Fort Lauderdale and Ann Zucker of Weston. Proceeds from the luncheon benefited the Broward College WINGS program. Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting By Wendy S. Levenson EdD, RN Director of Education, Westside regional Medical Center

T

University Dental Associates of Davie

he heart delivers oxygen throughout your body by pumping

blood through your arteries. When the coronary arteries of your heart contain blockages, portions of your heart may be deprived of oxygen and, if severe enough, may actually die. Coronary bypass grafting involves placing artery and/or vein grafts around these blockages to improve the blood supply to your heart muscle. Grafts are created using healthy blood vessels taken from other parts of your body. Depending on your condition, your physician will use a vessel from your chest or remove a section from your leg. The number of bypasses performed during the surgery will depend on your condition and the number of blocked arteries. Three to five bypasses are common during a procedure. Nonetheless, some surgeries require as many as nine bypasses. Coronary artery bypass grafting can take six to twelve hours followed by a few days of recovery in the hospital. Care after surgery may include periodic checkups with doctors. During these visits, tests may be done to see how the heart is working. Tests may include EKG, stress testing, and echocardiogram. Coronary artery bypass grafting is not a cure for coronary artery disease. You and your doctor may develop a management plan that includes lifestyle changes to help you stay healthy and reduce the chances of coronary artery disease getting worse. Lifestyle changes may include quitting smoking, making changes in your diet, getting regular exercise, and lowering and managing stress. In some cases, your doctor may refer you to a cardiac rehabilitation program. These programs can help you recover through supervised physical activity and education on how to make choices that reduce your risk for future heart problems and help you get back to your regular lifestyle after surgery. Doctors supervise these programs, which include counseling about lifestyle changes as well as exercise training to build strength and energy. Taking medicines as prescribed also is an important part of care after surgery. Medicines may be prescribed to manage pain during recovery; lower cholesterol, blood pressure, and the chance of developing blood clots; manage diabetes; or treat depression. The results of coronary artery bypass grafting usually are excellent. The surgery improves or completely relieves angina symptoms in most patients. Although symptoms can recur, many people remain symptom-free for as long as 10 to 15 years. Coronary artery bypass grafting also may lower your risk of having a heart attack and help you live longer. Westside Regional Medical Center's Cardiovascular Program is comprised of a team of experienced surgeons, cardiologists, anesthesiologists, radiologists, pulmonologists, internists and nurses. Together, these medical and surgical specialists combine their experience and knowledge in order to provide patients with the latest scientific advances in their respective fields.

For a free referral to a primary care physician in the area, contact Westside Regional Medical Center’s toll-free physician referral and health information line at 1-800-618-2631.

It is so easy and so much fun. ▸▸ Select one of 130 patterns. ▸▸ Choose your shape and size – rectangle, square, oval, octagon, round, runner or carpet for the room. ▸▸ Choose the colors that enhance your décor – 480 colors in different textures and piles. ▸▸ See it come alive on our computers. Play with it and change it around till you absolutely love it. ▸▸ Order and it’s ready in 4 to 5 weeks. Prices start at just $387 for a 5 ft. x 8 ft. custom rug. Tips on choosing a rug: Use a rug to define or separate areas, such as seating or dining areas, and foyers. ▸▸ Shape: Let the way you group your furniture dictate the shape of your rug. ▸▸ Size: For a room size rug subtract 3 feet from the length and width of the room. Leaving the floor bare at the edges makes it look a little larger. ▸▸ Dining Room: Leave at least 24” of rug from the edge of the table out on all sides. This enables the back legs of the chairs to stay on the rug, when pulled out. Select man-made material or wool (not silk or cotton) for easy clean up and durability. ▸▸ Runners: They should be 4 inches narrower than your hallway and 18 to 24 inches shorter. ▸▸ Layering: Throw a rug over your carpet to accentuate or create more visual interest. ▸▸ Pattern or solid: If you have lots of pattern in your furniture or drapes, I recommend a rug with little or no visible pattern. If the opposite is true, a patterned rug will bring life to the room. ▸▸ Color: Remember your color theory basics when picking a rug. If you want your space to appear larger, choose a lighter color. A darker color will make the room seem more intimate. Bring us a picture of your furniture and we’ll help you select your custom rug. We’ll design your rug right on our computers. At the age of 5 years old, my son, Scottie, was unable to attend birthday parties, could not participate in sporting events, and felt left out of enjoying his childhood due to chronic illnesses of food and environmental factors. Since he began his treatments with Dr. Popkin he is enjoying a healthy asthmafree childhood and can participate in sports. The best news is, that for the first time, he can go to camp and enjoy foods without having allergic reactions. No longer needing to live on a special diet has allowed me and my family to finally enjoy life. To me, this is a miracle! Patriots Take Soccer Title By Julie Levin

F

or the first time in six

years, American Heritage Soccer is back on top. The boys varsity soccer team recently won the State 3A title, rounding out a season that saw the Patriots go 28-2-3. The team secured the championship title with a 3-1 with over Land O’ Lakes in Tampa. “At the start of the season, nobody really expected us to win. “I’m very proud of them, because nobody expected this from us,” said Richard Jobson, the Head Soccer Coach of the American Heritage Upper School in Plantation, who is in his first full season as head coach. Jobson said the team draws elite soccer players from across the county, many of whom play in competitive travel leagues. They endured daily practices after school and dedicated themselves to disciplining themselves and putting the team first. “We just worked twice as hard as anyone else. They practiced very seriously and took time to learn the system,” said Jobson, who played college soccer at St. Thomas University.

26

It was the school’s 5th overall state championship, but the first one since 2008. One of the reasons for this year’s success was the play of forward Luis Betancur. The junior was named the Sun Sentinel High School Player of the Year in the Class 3A division for his 35 goals and 17 assists. Two of those goals were during the Patriots’ Class 3A state championship victory over Land O’Lakes. Betancur also played on the U.S. Youth Soccer Region III Olympic Development team last year and played in Costa Rica. In addition to Betancur, four other players made All-County first team, and several made the All-County

second team. The team is off until next year, but Jobson has a word of warning for the teams in his division.”We look even better next year,” he said. For the 2012-2013 season, they have the core of the team returning, including four freshmen who saw extensive playing time this year gaining much-needed experience. “I think this is the first of many titles to go for us,” Jobson said.

f you or your spouse has decided to file for divorce

in Florida, at least one of you must be a resident of the state for at least six months or a member of an armed force stationed in the state. Also called a “dissolution” of the marriage, Florida divorces legally begin when you or your spouse files a “Petition for Dissolution of Marriage” with the Family Division of the local circuit court. The other spouse is served with the paperwork and given time to respond. If both you and your spouse agree on how to divide property, debt and responsibilities for any children, the divorce can be finalized without a trial. In the divorce process, any assets and debts amassed during the marriage, referred to as “marital assets,” will be divided “equitably,” or fairly, upon divorce. Any assets you had before marriage may be considered “non-marital assets” if they were kept separated from property acquired during the marriage. You and your spouse can each retain your non-marital assets. Generally, judges will divide assets equally, unless there is a basis for unequal distribution. The judge will consider both you and your spouse’s economic circumstances and the contributions each of you made to the marriage.

On the issue of support, alimony is an extension of the obligation for spouses to support each other financially during the marriage. In ordering alimony, the Court considers factors which include, among others, the standard of living during the marriage; the length of the marriage; and the age and physical condition of each spouse. Divorce laws in Florida include child support guidelines that judges use to calculate the support needed for a child and how much each parent has to pay. The court looks at both parent’s incomes and the child’s health and child care costs. Lastly, disputes concerning children are resolved by the Court based on what is in the “best interests” of the child. Unless there is a reason that it would be detrimental to your child’s upbringing, the court will usually grant shared responsibility. Sometimes the court will give one parent responsibility over specific aspects of a child’s welfare, such as primary residence, education or medical care. Using a Chapter 13 Bankruptcy Plan to Keep Your Home and Investment Properties for Much Less than You Owe By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

M

ost consumers are familiar with a simple Chapter 7 bank-

ruptcy in which all of the debtor’s assets are liquidated and all unsecured debt (credit cards, medical debt, etc.) is wiped out. However, within a Chapter 7 bankruptcy you will not be able to modify your home loan or any other amounts owed on any investment properties. In fact, your lender has the right to continue a foreclosure process on your home during a Chapter 7 bankruptcy with permission from the court, which is always granted when the homeowner owes more than the market value of the home. Yet many consumers are unaware of the far reaching benefits of a Chapter 13 bankruptcy.

Unlike a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, under a Chapter 13 a debtor restructures instead of liquidating debts. A Chapter 13 debtor has the ability to repay over a period of 3-5 years, all mortgage arrearages, late fees, escrow shortages, credit card and other unsecured debt negotiated down to about one percent (1%) of the amount owed, reduced student loan payments, IRS liens, reduced car payments, and even attorneys’ fees are paid over time as part of the Chapter 13 plan. Perhaps the most beneficial part of a Chapter 13 plan is the ability to remove all second mortgages, lines of credit and other liens (including homeowners’ association liens) from your principal residence, and to significantly reduce principal balances on investment properties.

FREE DVD

In order to qualify, the debtor must be employed, or have a regular source of income, and the amount owed for the first mortgage on your principal residence must exceed the market value of that home. As it relates to the debtor’s investment properties, under a Chapter 13 plan you are able to wipe out any second mortgages or credit lines, and reduce the principal balance of the first mortgage on each property to the current fair market value, payable at a low fixed interest rate, amortized over 15 years, through an affordable monthly payment. Once a debtor submits a Chapter 13 plan and begins to make payments, the lender cannot proceed with a foreclosure. If you owe more on your first mortgage than the fair market value of your home, have one or more additional mortgages, lines of credit or other liens on that property, and are currently employed, you may be a perfect candidate to file a Chapter 13 bankruptcy. If in addition, you also have investment properties which are upside down in value, and would like to keep them because they are generating rental income, a Chapter 13 bankruptcy is the ideal solution to resolve your mortgage crisis instead of wasting countless hours attempting to modify your loans directly with lenders. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new instructional DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight for Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a FREE copy when you make an appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our legal team. Your Child’s First Orthodontic Check-up Dr. Felipe Norena

Good Dental Health Starts Early

A

s a parent, you want the best for your child.

That includes healthy teeth and a pleasing smile.

Start with regular dental care. The American Dental Association recommends that a child visit the family dentist by his or her first birthday, while baby (primary) teeth are emerging. Your dentist can alert you to any concerns about how the teeth and jaws are developing.

All Kids Should Get an Orthodontic Check-Up No Later Than Age 7

To have a smile that is good for life, your child needs teeth and jaws that are properly aligned — in other words, a healthy bite. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that your child get an orthodontic check-up no later than age 7. By then, your child’s teeth have developed enough to where subtle problems can be spotted.

Choosing the Optimal Time for Treatment

While orthodontic treatment most often begins between the ages of 9 and 14, some orthodontic problems are easier to correct if they are treated early. If it appears that treatment will be needed, your orthodontist can advise you as to the ideal time to begin. This gives your orthodontist the best chance to: ▸▸ Guide jaw growth ▸▸ Lower the risk of trauma to protruded front teeth ▸▸ Correct harmful oral habits

▸▸ Improve appearance and self-esteem ▸▸ Guide permanent teeth into a more favorable position ▸▸ Improve the way lips meet

Give Your Child the Gift of a Healthy Smile

Not only do well-aligned teeth look good and feel good, they also are important to good dental health. Poorly aligned teeth can lead to dental problems. Not everyone needs orthodontic treatment. But if your child does need help, it pays to start treatment when you have the greatest chance for success.

Norena Orthodontics is located in the northeast corner of Sunrise Blvd and Nob Hill Road. Drs Felipe and Ana Maria Norena have a combined orthodontic experience of 35 years. Dr. Felipe received his orthodontic degree from Saint Louis University and Dr. Ana Maria graduated from the Orthodontic program at Nova Southeastern University. They are both members of the American Association of Orthodontics. They are open Monday - Friday from 9 a..m. to 5 p.m. Call them at 954-474-1600 for an appointment.

Children “Egged-on” for Annual Easter Event By Julie Levin

T

health & wellness

The Importance of a Kids Fitness Program By Steve Bowser Co-owner of The Playground Gym/CrossFit Affliction in Davie

D

hey came armed with their baskets and bags, all focused on

one task. Hundreds of youngsters descended on Pop Travers Field recently to scoop up as many Easter Eggs as possible. The Royal Easter Egg Hunt, sponsored by the City of Plantation and the Plantation Woman’s Club, was held April 7 at the field, located at 6250 S.W. 16 Street. As they have for many years, the city rolled out 6,000 candy filled eggs into four different areas at Pop Travers Field. The kids were grouped according to age; 3&4 year olds, 5&6 years old, 7&8 year old and 9 &10 year old and each had their own area across a baseball outfield to hunt for their eggs. When they arrived, they were given numbers for small raffle prize give-a-ways afterwards.. The city also put close to one hundred specially decorated eggs on the fields that could be turned in for something special. Also on hand of course, the Easter Bunny who was only too happy to pose for photos.

id you know that according to Kidshealth.org,

one out of every three kids in America is considered overweight? Or that on average, kids between the ages 8 -18 spend an average of four hours in front of a TV and another two hours in front of a computer screen or playing video games? That's six hours in front of a screen every day. Let's not even get into what type of physical fitness program is being offered at their schools. So let's think about this - your kids are sitting around all day in school, then coming home and watching TV, playing video games, on the computer and maybe sitting around doing homework. It sounds like a very sedentary lifestyle to me. Sadly the kids are also shoveling down junk food, mainly through fast food. Many children and parents just don't realize how vital lean protein, fruits and veggies, and good fats in nuts and seeds are to a healthy diet. A good start would be cutting back on sugar and substituting soda for water. Our CrossFit Kids Fitness Program is designed to help children between the age group of 6 thru 8 and 9 thru 12 by teaching them proper form and technique in basic movements and exercises. Your child’s coordination, strength and overall conditioning will increase, which in turn will assist them with neurological and cognitive motor skills. Our classes will use skill practice, workouts and games along with educating your child to make healthier food choices. Your child will progress through a series of levels as they gain athletic abilities. You will notice your child will become more focused in school and transition into sports much easier due to their enhanced athletic skills. This is the perfect program if you are a parent who wants their kid to grow up healthy, strong and have a long life of fitness, thus avoiding childhood inactivity and obesity.

Ages 6-8

This age group teaches basic physical skills, social skills, and confidence. There will be foundation movements such as running, jumping, squats, push-ups, pull ups, climbing, and basic gymnastics movements. Your child will also learn how to follow direction, listen, communicate and play with other children. You will notice your child’s confidence grow both physically and mentally with each class.

Ages 9-12

This age group teaches more detailed skills involving light weight lifting, plyometrics, running, rowing, and stretching. Your child will also focus on leadership skills and as they progress through the program they will be asked to model movements, lead exercises, and demonstrate the ability to verbally explain exercises. Benefits of this program can be long lasting for children both physically and mentally. You will see incredible athletic results and your child will no longer be the last one picked in gym class. We also offer classes for Teenagers and Adults. The Playground Gym/CrossFit Affliction is located at 10400 State Rd 84, #103, in Davie in the 595 Corp Commerce Center in the rear of the complex. Check out our website at www.CrossFitAffliction.com or call us at 954-846-8666 to set up an appointment for a free tour. You can also visit our sister location, The Playground Gym /CrossFit Fort Lauderdale at 525 NW 1 Ave in Fort Lauderdale. The website is www.CrossFitFtLauderdale.com or call them at 954 789-7131.
