The Olympic Spirit
S
ummer and sports seem to go hand in hand. The ballparks
and pools are filled with children practicing and playing as they enjoy the joys of childhood. Meantime, across the pond in London, young athletes from all around the globe are getting ready to compete in the 2012 Olympic Games. Every four years the top athletes in the different summer Olympic sports meet to compete. While each of these athletes has trained hard for years to prepare for this pinnacle of international competition, winning their individual discipline is not the only thing on their mind. The Olympic Games stand for uniting the youth of the world for a better, global society. While there will always be differences in opinions and priorities, the young competitors from all over the world demonstrate to us that by working together with patience and tolerance we can overcome any obstacle. We will do well to remember that lesson in our daily lives. It may help us to be more tolerant towards each other and overcome disagreements with spouses, coworkers and neighbors. When watching the competitions of the 2012 Olympic Games unfold with your loved ones, rejoice in the spirit of the game and the spirit of togetherness. Cherish these quality moments!

Roadside Rescue By Julie Levin
A
lex Serrano wasn’t supposed to be anywhere near the exit
for 87th Avenue off of State Road 836 in Miami-Dade County earlier this month. The Tamarac man, who is a Registered Nurse at Plantation General Hospital, had taken a wrong turn and wound up on that exit ramp by mistake. What he couldn’t have known at the time, was that it would be a life-changing experience for not only him, but the man whose life he was about to save. “The man upstairs was watching,” said Serrano. Serrano was with his girlfriend and on their way to a birthday party when they ran into a back-up on the exit ramp. Trying to figure out what the cause of the delay was, he saw a woman who appeared to be fiercely pumping air in her rear tire. As he drove closer, Serrano realized she was fiercely pumping a man’s chest who was hanging out of the car. The man had been driving the vehicle when he suffered a heart attack and was in cardiac arrest. Serrano’s training took over. “I jumped out of my vehicle, checked for a pulse, and began to perform CPR, “ said Serrano. As he began the compressions, he remembers thinking to himself, “You are prepared for this moment. Stay calm, and take control of the situation.” Serrano has been working at Plantation General Hospital for three years and although he’s only been a registered nurse for a year, his workplace experience came in handy
as he tried to save the man’s life. “I just reacted like we always do at the hospital when there is a code,” he said. As a bystander called 911 for help, Serrano performed CPR for 8-10 minutes until the paramedics arrived on scene. Serrano knew the man had a pulse initially, but wasn’t sure what the outcome would be. “I was hoping Alex Serrano (l) and he was going to o.k., Angel Santiago (r) but I wasn’t sure. I was confident I had done everything I could.” A few days later, he was overjoyed to hear that the patient, Angel Santiago, had survived and was recovering at Kendall Regional. Santiago’s wife arranged to meet Serrano the following week to thank him. “It was such a monumental moment in my life. His family began to embrace me as he and I took a picture together. This is something that neither of us will ever forget,” said Serrano. Serrano remembers several cars driving past the scene without offering to help the man. He is certain that his experience as an RN at Plantation General Hospital helped him to stop, keep calm and do what he needed to do to save a life. He’s just glad he was in the right place at the right time. “I wasn’t even supposed to be there, but I’m glad I was,” he said.

founded which trains and helps develop public safety diving programs around the world. When he’s not on the water, Gannon also serves as a field inspector for the Florida State Fire Marshal’s office in his free time. Off the job, he’s married to wife Dorothy and is the father three children and two grandchildren. Gannon’s tenure is impressive, but it was not the only one being celebrated at the City Council meeting. He was one of 28 firefighters who received pins marking more than 300 years of service to the residents of Plantation. The Plantation Fire Department has been serving the citizens of Plantation since 1957 when 17 civic-minded citizens conceived a volunteer fire department to serve the newly born community. Today the department is the largest volunteer fire department in Florida. It is a multi-faceted community service agency providing a variety of services including fire suppression, emergency During a recent City Council meeting, Joseph “Pete” Gannon displayed his medical services, fire prevention, public 30-year pin marking 30 years of service with the Plantation Fire Department. He went on to serve with the Lauderhill Fire Department where he eventually advanced to the rank of Battalion Chief. Back with Plantation, Gannon currently coordinates all training and activities for Plantation’s nationally recognized Dive Rescue team, which is one of his lifelong interests. “Diving has always been a passion of mine,” says Gannon, who is also a certified boat captain and has produced a text book on public safety and rescue diving. “I love the water and everything related to it.” His passion also extends to Dive Rescue International, a private company that he

A Fountain of Community Spirit By Julie Levin

glimpse of its newest addition. Thanks to a local civic organization, the auditorium now has a beautiful fountain running out front for everyone to enjoy for generations to come. The Williamsburg-style fountain was formally dedicated on May 8 in front of City leaders and members of GFWC Plantation Woman’s Club, which provided the funds to build the fountain as part of their on-going beautification projects within the City. “Fountain dedications are important as they bring community
a tiered fountain and the Plantation Preserve Golf-Country Club was presented with two fountains in 2006. Just four years ago, The Historical Society received a waterfall fountain and butterfly garden. Central Park also has a large fountain with color lights. The Plantation Woman’s Club has also had a long history of creating other beautifications projects in the City. Through the years, they have donated trees to Liberty Tree Park, park benches to City Hall, historical trees to the botanical tree collection, and helped with the restoration of the oldest City structure--Peter’s Summer Kitchen & Gazebo-- including wheelchair accessible picnic areas and wedding gazebo. It’s not the first time the Plantation Woman’s Club has added a fountain to the local landscape. Their first efforts date back to 1976 when the new City Hall was built and the club provided a fountain and patio. A fountain and patio were also donated by the club in 1988-89 for the City Developmental Building. In 2001,Volunteer Park received

In 2008, the Club joined with Massey Yardley Chrysler to make- over Fig Tree Park in one day, while also obtaining donated food and serving 250 volunteers. Started in 1949, The Plantation Woman’s Club is the oldest civic organization in the City of Plantation. Their mission is to foster a spirit of friendly goodwill among the women of Plantation in forwarding the charitable, educational and civic improvement of our community, country and world.
Tennis Camp Offered for the Children of Active Armed Forces Members By Julie Levin
T
ennis anyone? The offer to hit the courts is once again being
made to children of active or deployed Armed Forces personnel. The Frank Veltri Tennis Center in Plantation is inviting all military kids, between the ages of 6-16, to a free summer tennis camp at Plantation Central Park. “The military program was something we were very proud to begin last summer,” said Lowell Coffman, the Assistant Director of the Plantation Tennis Center. For a second straight year, the children are being invited for a free two-week session of tennis camp, which will include not only tennis instruction twice a day, but also swimming and fun in the indoor game room at the park. The tennis center can accommodate up to five military families each two-week session. They’ve offered a recreational summer tennis camp for children since 1981, and decided to expand to military families two years ago, spurred on by local resident, tennis player and veteran Mark Morgenstern. Coffman says it was Morgenstern who
14 PLT_ALL_0712.indd 14
began the arduous process of obtaining the military certification. “To get vetted by the military and be certified to offer the program takes quite a few different levels of authorization,” said Coffman. Summer 2012 Tennis Camp is run in partnership with the USTA & USTA Military Outreach and is presented by the Broward County Veteran Council, in addition to the City of Plantation’s Veltri Tennis Center. Camp sessions run until August 17, and Coffman said they did have plenty of people take them up on it last year. They also offer the program over the major school holidays and are also looking to form a wheelchair tennis program for Veterans in the future. To register, go to WWW.plantationtennis.org and then click on Tennis Camp, then Military Camp Program and then Military Camp enrollment. Fill in and send; all needed information is displayed. No equipment is needed. The Frank Veltri Tennis Center is located at 9101 NW 2nd Street in Plantation. You can phone them at 954-452-2530

International Trip Planned to Benefit Plantation Organizations By Julie Levin
I
f you are looking to see the world and help residents of Plantation
at the same time, Betty Cobb has a deal for you. The Plantation resident is organizing a trip to Portugal in September and she’s looking for fellow travelers to join her. “It’s a nice package and it is always fun to travel in a group,” said Cobb, who heads up the Plantation Travel Club. It’s going to be the sixth overseas trip for the Travel Club, which makes an international trip once a year to not only have fun, but also to benefit three local organizations: the Plantation Woman’s Club, Plantation Historical Society and Friends of the Plantation Library. “It’s a really fun fundraiser. If we get 11 people to go, the company refunds the fare for one back to the three organizations,” said Cobb. This year, they are planning a 14-day journey to Portugal, which will include seven days aboard a 130-passenger River Cruise, as well as seeing the sites of Lisbon, Fatima and a few sites in Spain.Travelers are treated to an all-inclusive journey that includes 10 sightseeing tours, accommodations and all but a handful of meals. “The food is good, there will be wonderful Portuguese wines and they took good care of us,” said Cobb. In the past the group has traveled to Canada, The Netherlands & Belgium, Norway, Germany, Hungary and Austria. Last year, they toured Australia and New Zealand. The amount they raise for the three groups depends on the number of travelers. Some years, they made nothing because they didn’t reach the minimum number of travelers. Other years, like the year they went to the Netherlands, Cobb said they had more than two dozen travelers and made an estimated $5500 for the three organizations.
The trip is open to travelers of all ages, and you do not need to be a resident of Plantation. For more information, call Betty Cobb 954-581-6463 or the Plantation Historical Museum at 954-797-2722.

Kiwanis Club of Plantation Celebrates Successful Year By Julie Levin
A
fter a year of impressive expansion in local schools, the
Kiwanis Club of Plantation recently celebrated with two end-of-the school year events. In late May, the service club held its annual Scholarship Banquet at Duffy’s Sports Grill, handing out $3,500 to deserving students from their high school Key Clubs. The club awards anywhere from $3,000-$5,000 in scholarships each year based off of its annual golf tournament and car show. Students Kayla Davis and Alyssa Jindracek both received $1,000 scholarships. Davis will attend Broward College in the coming months, while Jindracek will be off to Florida Gulf Coast University. Several students also received $500 scholarships. They are Elizabeth Russo (SPHS c/o 2010), Lisa Tran (SPHS c/o 2010), Mischma Florvilous (SPHS c/o 2011), Sara Saxner (Nova HS c/o 2010) The club also held an Awards Banquet to honor the students who are a part of their Key Clubs and brand new K-Kids Club. More than 75 people turned out May 30 for the ceremony at Deicke Auditorium, which was presented by the South Plantation High School Key Club. The students showed a two-minute video that won them 2nd prize at the Florida Key Club Convention this year and then handed out awards to fellow Key Club members, and the new members of the Plantation Park Elementary School K-Kids Club.

K-Kids is a national Kiwanis program and is the largest student-led, community-service organization for elementary school students nationwide. This is the first time it has been introduced in Plantation and this year 15 students in grades 3-5 at Plantation Park took part in it. They met once a week, under the guidance of Kiwanis Club members and South Plantation High School Key Club members. One of the first projects launched was a school-wide clean-up of graffiti and foul words defacing school property. Other projects have included making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the needy, writing letters to service men and women and writing letters to encourage their fellow students during the FCAT exams. “It was a great year working with the young students,” said Jim McGonigle, the Treasurer of the Kiwanis Club of Plantation. The success of the K-Kids is drawing other requests. McGonigle says three other local elementary schools are asking for similar clubs in their schools, and plans are in the works to kick-off a Kiwanis service club at Seminole Middle School, called a “Builders Club”, for 6th-8th graders. McGonigle says it will be run initially by some of the recent graduates from Plantation Park who took part in the K-Kids Club. In addition to building new programs in area schools, the Kiwanis Club of Plantation also just finished delivering 800 book to kindergarten children and was named Partner of the Year by South Plantation High School.

Jacqueline Binns is thrilled with her new commute. “The 595 Express Bus is beyond what I expected,” said Binns, who lives in Weston and works in downtown Fort Lauderdale. “Driving more than 50 miles a day adds up. With the 595 Express Bus I not only save money on gas, parking, and car expenses, but I can also get a jumpstart on my work day using the free Wi-Fi.” Funded by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) with services provided by Broward County Transit (BCT), the 595 Express Bus runs every 30 minutes on weekday mornings and afternoons. The fleet is comprised of new 42-foot hybrid buses equipped with free WiFi and 12-volt power outlets for charging electronic communication equipment. “Think of the 595 Express Bus as the ultimate hands-free device,” said Jeremy Mullings, FDOT Project Manager. “Instead of fighting traffic, commuters can now spend their time how they’d like: surfing the net, catching up on emails or simply relaxing. And, with the cost of commuting as high as it is, riding the 595 Express Bus has never made more sense for residents commuting from Western Broward.” 595 Express Bus fares are $2.35 for a one-way adult fare to downtown Miami and downtown Fort Lauderdale. BCT is also offering a Premium 31-Day Bus Pass for $85 that includes unlimited rides on both express and regular bus service and a Premium 10-Ride Bus Pass at a cost of $23.50. Real Life Wedding Experience Sparks Novel By Julie Levin
Like so many women, Theresa Braun envisioned herself one day with a fairytale romance that ended with everyone living happily ever after. When that didn’t happen, the Plantation woman knew she needed to find a way to help cope with her negative nuptial experience. She penned a novel, her first, called Groom and Doom: A Greek Love Story. “I found it as a good way to deal with the pain and the fact that the relationship didn’t work out,” said Braun, who teaches at Archbishop McCarthy High School in Southwest Ranches. The novel is partly based on Braun’s real life story and was inspired by her wedding to her ex-husband in Greece. While many of the parts are fictionalized and exaggerated, there are some Theresa Braun painful real truths to it. The groom’s mother unexpectedly died about a year prior to the wedding and his father was still very much in the grieving stage. Groom and Doom: A Greek Love Story, is a plight of a bride-to-be, Angela, whose wedding overseas is painfully tainted by her father-in-
law’s unresolved anguish after his wife dies. Though there is a wedding, and honeymoon, the relationship doesn’t survive. “The experience was so unbelievable, I knew that truth was stranger than fiction and I had to write the story,” said Braun.”The whole process of writing it and making parts of it even more ridiculous was very cathartic.” Braun hopes her self-published book, told with tinges of dark humor, ultimately leads readers towards a level of selfempowerment and an understanding of the power of communication. At the end of the story, she shares her reflections about her experiences with the reader, in hopes they will benefit from what she has learned.”Hopefully, it is a good way to encourage women to turn something negative and painful into a positive, to move past it and learn from it,” she said. While it is her first novel, Braun has had poems, photography and other items published. She’s already at work on a second novel that she plans to turn into a series. Mentors Making a Difference By Julie Levin
S
everal years ago, Our Savior Lutheran Church and School
made a commitment to make more of a difference in the community. Recently that reinvigorated mission paid off with an honor from Broward County Public Schools. Our Savior Lutheran was named the “Outstanding Mentor Program Of The Year” for its volunteer work at Mirror Lake Elementary School. The honor was handed out at the district’s Community Involvement Awards May 9. “It was overwhelming, it really was,” said Rev. Ed Nicklas, Pastor of Our Savior Lutheran Church and School. “But while the awards are nice, that’s not why we do it. We are trying to make a difference in student’s lives.”

Each week during the school year, a team of volunteers from Our Savior Lutheran visits Mirror Lake, which is located at 1200 N.W. 72nd Avenue in Plantation. The school has long had a mentoring program for its students, but the team from Our Savior more than doubles that mentoring force. Volunteers meet one-on-one with students who need help with school work, social skills, or are experiencing problems outside of school. Besides mentoring, Our Savior volunteers also help out in the office or library, tutor, serve as proctors for tests, assist as chaperones for trips and organize the donation of backpacks filled with school supplies. One member even takes her therapy dog so the children can read to her and even Pastor Nicklas helps pulls cafeteria duty on a routine basis. The partnership began in 2009, when the church saw a need to establish more of a community presence. Pastor Nicklas said they asked 400 people in the community if they had heard of Our Savior Lutheran and even though the church has been in the same location for 50 years, not one person said yes. They sent out letters to Plantation schools looking for ways to help and Mirror Lake welcomed them in. “The Principal asked when we could start and we said how about right away,” said Nicklas. The district’s Youth Mentoring Program provided training and the volunteers have done the rest. The team is now helping to get the school ready for the upcoming school year. “It’s an honor when people recognize what you are doing,” said Pastor Nicklas.

CN Inspiring Individuals
Oprah Magazine Features Plantation Charity By Julie Levin
A
Plantation non-profit group has
been making itself known on the national scene in recent months. Jennifer Cohen, the founder of the Plantation-based Sydney & Alexandria Cohen Foundation, was featured in the June edition of “O” the Oprah Magazine for her work in the community. “I couldn’t believe it when they first called,” said Cohen. “It is such a tremendous honor.” Cohen was one of just four women honored in the magazine as part of a Cover Girl contest called “The Beauty of Giving Back”. The competition called for participants to write a 300-word essay describing how they give back to their community. Cohen, along Jennifer Cohen, founder of the Sydney & Alexandria with husband Brian, created the Sydney & Alexandria Cohen Foundation, featured Cohen Foundation after their daughters were born in the Oprah Magazine 10 weeks premature. The foundation raises money to buy and donate state-of-the-art GE Omnibed incubators to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Memorial Hospital West where their daughters spent the first five weeks of their lives in 2003. As part of the Cover Girl contest, Jennifer received a three-night trip to New York for two and a “Cover Girl” cosmetics magazine shoot, while the foundation received a check for $2,500. The foundation was also recently selected as one of nine inspirational charities nationwide by Wonder Bread’s national “Share the Wonder” campaign. During the 90-day campaign, Wonder invited people to nominate inspiring charities in their local communities. The company selected nine charities from across the country and has
donated $10,000 to each. The two donations were enough to allow the Cohen’s to order the first of two incubators they plan on purchasing for the hospital. Cohen says she is inspired to keep fundraising for the second one. “I always like to do things in two’s because of my twins,” she said. As for her girls, now both healthy 9-years-olds who attend the David Posnack Jewish Day School in Davie, Cohen says the recent attention is a great lesson for them as well. “It shows them that little by little, you can reach your goal when you keep working towards it,” she said. Right: Jennifer Cohen stands between her daughters Sydney (left) and Alexandria (right) holding a check in the amount of $10,000 from Wonder bread.

Have No Fear, Bioidenticals Are Here By Michael F. Augustino, MD, FACOG
I
t has been more than eight years since the over-
publicized and over-exaggerated risks of hormone therapy hit the news. This has been a serious disservice to women, creating a fear of hormones which has been blown out of proportion. Out of concern for my patients, many of whom suffer from changes associated with their ovaries in approach to menopause or in reaching full menopause, and a genuine interest in finding a safe and suitable solution, I spent nearly a year researching medical literature with regard to bioindentical hormones. I discovered that those studies, which caused all the fear, had to do with synthetic hormones. Those risks do not pertain to bioidentical hormone therapy. Hormone therapy is nothing to fear. Hormones are used in many other aspects of medicine. Where would we be today if it were not for insulin, a hormone made by your pancreas to regulate blood sugar? Insulin therapy allows many of my diabetic patients to experience a normal prenatal course and give birth to healthy babies. Hormones are also used to regulate thyroid disorders. Even children are prescribed growth hormone therapy if they are not growing properly. It is also a viable treatment for menopausal women. When you consider today’s population and average life span, women will spend over 1/3 of their lives in menopause (lack of ovarian function). I have a list available in my exam rooms of over 35 symptoms commonly associated with menopause and perimenopause. Many times in greeting a patient, they will express that “I am having 30 out of 35 of these symptoms.” At some point in a woman’s life, menopause is inevitable. Bioidentical hormones can alleviate the symptoms associated with lack of estrogen and testosterone as these levels fall with age. Quality of life is enhanced as skin tone, hair, nails, energy, libido, and memory
are all improved. Bioidentical hormone therapy also offers many health benefits. After using natural hormones, women experience an increase in bone density which protects against osteoporosis. Muscle metabolism is also improved leading to an increase in muscle mass and reduction of body fat. Testosterone protects the heart and heart disease is the number one medical problem in this country. It is important to point out that bioidentical hormone therapy is not a one size fits all treatment. In other words, every patient has their therapy individualized, so it is custom prepared to fill their body’s deficiencies and put the body back into balance. Patients sleep better, therapeutic levels are more consistent, and everything improves over time. Patients who are using bioidentical hormone therapy have a high degree of satisfaction. I am consistently told: “I should have done this sooner,” “my children want to be around me again,” and “I have more energy.” Men can also benefit from bioidentical hormone therapy. As men age, testosterone levels decrease. With hormone therapy men notice increased muscle strength, more energy, and a better libido. Don’t take my word for it, do your own research; talk with others who have benefited from bioidentical hormone therapy. It’s a natural and safe way to improve your health and quality of life. Middle School Band Making Beautiful Music By Julie Levin
F
resh off a successful year that included state honors for
several of its members, the Seminole Middle School Band Program is hoping to hit another high note this coming school year and they are looking for the community’s help to get it done. Under the direction of Band Director Jamie M. Roth, the band program is home to 165 children, many of whom have never picked up an instrument before they enter in the school in the 6th grade. By the end of the year, most are not only playing, but reading music as well. “This program is a vital and essential element to the arts and we are grateful to Seminole Middle School for giving
ratings available. The students and their rankings are: Excellent rating - Bryan Davis Superior rating - Mark Dubin, Zak Milian, Chance Slue, Jacob Silberstein, Dillon Neir, Sebastian Delgadillo, Sky Evans, Devin Diaz and Julianne Diaz. The band was also awarded the Best Marching Band in the Davie Orange Guest of honor AP Jill Fiorentino & Edson Blossom Parade and is also a Jean- Jaque performing with Advanced Jazz Band at the end of year concert paid participant in the Boca Raton Holiday Parade and the Plantation Holiday Parade.”Music is a language that transcends language, culture and borders it opens doors and our children’s minds to new experiences. We support our dedicated and hardworking students and always invite the community to show their support at our parade and concerts,” said Hodes. If you can help with sponsorship opportunities or donations, contact seminolemiddleband@gmail. com or Heidi Hodes (305) 331-7393.

our children this opportunity. But the future of this program lies in the hands of our community,” says Heidi Hodes, the President of the Seminole Band Booster LLC., the band’s parent support group. The Booster group raised approximately $40,000 dollars last year through a variety of fundraisers, but Hodes says it is not enough to tackle the band’s growing list of needs. Seminole Middle is a Title 1 school where more than 50% of the students are on free and or reduced lunches. While students are able to rent their instruments from the school for $25, most of the marching band instruments were purchased in the 70’s and are falling apart. The uniforms are from the 1980’s.”Our greatest need at the moment is purchasing and replacing the marching band equipment and uniforms, the cost of this is $40,000” said Hodes. To help defray costs last year, the Band Boosters held a Rehearsathon, where clinicians from each section worked with small groups of students to improve and hone their skills for 8 hours. The event culminated in a Music Olympics where students put their skills to the test. The Boosters also provided 4 months of clinicians to the students so that they could not only learn more about their instruments and how to play them more proficiently, but also develop a greater love of music. Hodes says the community can help out through both their time and donations. Seminole Band has a full orchestra of 164 students playing a range of instruments.”We are looking for musicians in the community who are willing to give their time to our band to assist as clinicians on a volunteer basis,” said Hodes. The community can also help through donations of money, goods for door prizes or instruments. Hodes says the entire brass section needs to be replaced including Tubas, Sousaphones, Saxophones, Trumpets and more. They are also in desperate need of a sound system. Regardless of their financial constraints, the Seminole Middle School Band is getting noticed on a state level. Recently, the program had a band member participate in the All-State Honors Band in Tampa. Advanced Band Student Jacob Silberstein was selected to participate, which is a statewide honor as only 10 trumpet players are invited to take part. Additionally, ten of their beginning and Advanced Band students participated in the yearly Florida district solo evaluations in May, with every student scoring the highest

electing a competent divorce attorney to
handle your family law case is a very important decision. Unless you and your spouse arrange an amicable divorce, you will want an advocate who can convince the court to give you what you need and deserve. The choice of attorney becomes especially important if there is a dispute over the children. The following are a few important criteria to help in finding the right divorce attorney. Probably the best way to find an attorney is to ask friends, coworkers, or relatives who have gone through a divorce if they would recommend their divorce attorney. Since divorce is fairly common, chances are you know several people who have been divorced. Ask these people if they would use their attorney again. If they would, then add that attorney’s name to the list. If you don’t know anyone who has been divorced or don’t want to let anyone know that you are considering a divorce, then you can call a lawyer referral service in your city or county or lastly, you may search online for divorce attorneys who appear on the results pages.
No Phone Calls Please! E-mail resume to: publisher@ourcityweston.com
Any lawyer you consider should have substantial experience in handling divorce cases. Additionally, that lawyer should practice primarily in the field of divorce law. Often people will hire a lawyer who practices primarily in some other area, thinking that any lawyer will do. However, divorce law is a specialized field that requires particular skills and experience in order to have a likelihood of reaching a successful conclusion. It is vitally important that you have a candid discussion with any prospective divorce lawyer about fees and what you can expect. Typically, an experienced divorce attorney will require the payment of a substantial retainer up front, against which that lawyer’s hourly rate and expenses will be charged. You should find out what the lawyer’s hourly rate is, what the upfront retainer will be, whether any portion of the retainer is refundable if it is not exhausted, and how often you can expect to receive invoices that detail the hourly charges and expenses. When it comes down to choosing an attorney out of several you have interviewed, be more intuitive than scientific Even if the attorneys you interviewed are all acceptable on paper, there is no guarantee each one will be a good fit. Go with your gut and choose the attorney you click with. Remember that divorce is a highly personal and emotionally charged process, so choose an attorney with whom you will feel comfortable sharing some of the more intimate details of your life. If you have received strong recommendations, done your research and interviewed several candidates, you should find a lawyer who will advocate for you, patiently answer your questions and guide you through a difficult process. For a free initial consultation to learn more about the divorce process, please contact the law office of Maritza Gonzalez, P.A. located in Weston at (954) 389-2221 or visit us at www.mgfamilylaw.com.

Understanding Colorectal Cancer By Wendy S. Levenson EdD, RN Director of Education-Westside Regional Medical Center
C
olorectal cancer affects 140,000 people annually, causing
60,000 deaths. Polypectomy (the removal of polyps in the colon), usually performed during a routine diagnostic test (colonscopy or flexible sigmoidoscopy ), has been a factor in the declining incidence of this cancer. Surgery is the optimal treatment for colorectal cancer, resulting in cure in 80% of patients. Recurrence due to surgical failure is low, from 4% to 8%, when surgery is meticulously performed. Colorectal surgery is a field in medicine, dealing with disorders of the rectum, anus, and colon. The past 15 years have witnessed a revolution in surgical procedures for treatment of conditions such as colon cancer, ulcerative colitis and diverticulitis. There are a variety of procedures a colorectal surgeon may use to treat intestinal disorders. Until 1990, all colorectal surgery was performed by making large incisions in the abdomen, opening up the intestinal cavity, and making the repair. Most of these repairs involved resection (cutting out the diseased or damaged portion) and anastomosis (attaching the cut ends of the intestine together). Some were tucks to tighten sphincter muscles or repair fissures, and others cut out hemorrhoids. Operations such as colectomy — complete or partial removal of the colon — that used to require lengthy, open incisions can now be performed using just a three-inch incision, plus tiny openings for a camera and instruments. Laparoscopic surgery is being used with many diseases of the intestinal tract, including initial cancers. For this surgery, the colon and rectal surgeon inserts a laparoscope (an instrument that has a tiny video camera attached) through a small incision in the abdomen. Other small incisions are made through which the surgeon inserts surgical
28 PLT_ALL_0712.indd 28
instruments. This surgery often results in fewer complications, a shorter stay in the hospital, less postoperative pain, a quicker return to normal activities, and less scarring. It is not recommended for patients who have had extensive prior abdominal surgery, large tumors, previous cancer, or serious heart problems. In addition to new surgical techniques Westside Regional Medical Center is utilizing a multimodal care pathway known as Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS). ERAS has been designed to achieve early recovery for patients undergoing major surgery. ERAS represents a change in perioperative care in two ways. ERAS examines traditional practices, replacing them with evidence-based best practices when necessary. Second it covers all areas preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative in the patient’s journey through the surgical process. Key factors that keep patients in the hospital after surgery include but are not limited to the need for pain management, the need for intravenous fluids and lack of mobility. The central elements of ERAS address these key factors demonstrating how they affect patient recovery. In addition ERAS provides guidance to all involved in the care of the patient assisting them in a well-coordinated fashion as they care for the patient. ERAS has been shown to reduce required care time and postoperative complications. For a free referral to a primary care physician in the area, contact Westside Regional Medical Center’s toll-free physician referral and health information line at 1-800-618-2631.

CN Ask the Expert
Are You Sick of Being Sick? Dr. David S. Popkin
T
ell me if this has ever happened to you, or
someone you know. Life is going great and then one day you begin to feel bad. For example, certain foods cause stomach pain, gas, or bloating. Or maybe your nose begins to drip constantly or becomes totally stuffed up. Maybe you suddenly have rashes or itching or begin experiencing pain in your muscles, joints or soreness you can’t explain. Naturally, you grow a bit worried and see your Doctor, who advises you to take over the counter medication or writes you a prescription. You are faithful to your Doctor’s request for several days, as your condition(s) either improve, or remain the same. Let’s say they do get better, now you feel confident enough to stop the drugs but then, your symptoms come back. Again, you find yourself in your doctor’s office who refers you to a specialist. They do the usual routine; blood tests, urine, and maybe an X-Ray or CT scan. And guess what? All tests come back normal! You find yourself confused and thinking to yourself “hmm, maybe it’s just me”. How many times have you heard this story? Well, let me reassure you, you are not going crazy! The problem is that many Doctors are missing pieces of the puzzle and those missing pieces are allergies. Allergies occur when your immune system makes a mistake. Normally, your immune system protects you from germs and disease. It does this by producing antibodies that help you fight off bacteria, viruses, and other micro-organisms. But if you have an allergy, your immune system mistakenly treats something as if it’s really dangerous to you. Undiagnosed allergies can produce symptoms, illnesses, and chronic diseases (like migraine headaches), sinusitis, ear infections, backaches, asthma, etc. Such symptoms can affect every system and organ in the body. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia,
immune disorders, hyperactivity, arthritis, anxiety, depression, addictions and many other conditions can be allergy-based. For the fifty percent of Americans (128 million people) suffering from various health problems caused by allergies not yet known to them, NAET effectively treats both allergies and sensitivities. What is NAET? NAET stands for Nambudripad’s Allergy Elimination Technique. It is an extremely safe and effective means of treating all forms of allergies. It has been around for over 25 years and was developed by a doctor who was seeking an alternative treatment for patients. There are no needles, shots or medications used. The treatment is completely painless and totally safe for infants, children and adults. By using NAET we are able to reprogram the immune system. I have found that individuals with food allergies/ intolerances, environmental, chemical, and even pet allergies feel incredible relief once we clear them of their allergic responses. By eliminating the allergies, the patient’s problems are resolved no matter how long they have had them and the results are permanent. Dr. David Popkin has been practicing in the Plantation area for the past 26 years. He specializes in allergies and Functional Medicine. He can be reached at Quantum Wellness Center,1261 South Pine Island Road in Plantation. For more information, phone 954-370-1900 or visit www.drdavepopkin.com

“
At the age of 5 years old, my son, Scottie, was unable to attend birthday parties, could not participate in sporting events, and felt left out of enjoying his childhood due to chronic illnesses of food and environmental factors. Since he began his treatments with Dr. Popkin he is enjoying a healthy asthmafree childhood and can participate in sports. The best news is, that for the first time, he can go to camp and enjoy foods without having allergic reactions. No longer needing to live on a special diet has allowed me and my family to finally enjoy life. To me, this is a miracle! I am so thankful for finding Dr. Popkin and to experience NAET, a natural method for eliminating allergy symptoms. - Susan G.

Tips for Beating the Bank in Foreclosure Proceedings By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
F
rom December 2007 to present, South Florida has experienced
a 400 percent increase in foreclosure filings, and more than one fourth of all mortgages in the United States right now are at least 60 days past due. In view of these staggering statistics, most homeowners simply give up the fight for their home before it even begins. However, a foreclosure lawsuit is just like any other lawsuit – the lender must prove its entire case before it can obtain a judgment. Just because you’ve been served with foreclosure papers does not mean you have to leave your home! The legal foreclosure process can take two years or more if the borrower is able to identify and present valid defenses to the foreclosure. Here are some suggestions on how to use foreclosure proceedings to your advantage, and possibly “beat the bank.”
Conduct a Forensic Audit of Your Loan First of all, perform a detailed audit of your loan transaction through a qualified mortgage auditing firm. A forensic audit often reveals serious violations of Federal and State laws committed by the same lenders that initiate foreclosure proceedings. An audit may also reveal fatal flaws in the transfer of your mortgage. If you don’t know a reputable mortgage audit firm in your area, please contact the Arcia Law Firm at 1-800-770-7102 or www.arcialawfirm.com, and we will gladly point you in the right direction. File a Counterclaim Against Your Lender Using the results of your forensic audit, and assuming you have identified violations of law in connection with your loan, you should file a counterclaim against your lender for those same violations. In other words, sue your lender within the same proceedings as a means to gain negotiating leverage and improve your mortgage terms. In some cases, borrowers have been able to obtain a cancellation of the mortgage altogether by taking the offensive in a foreclosure proceeding.
FREE DVD
Demand the Original Note Most foreclosure proceedings are not initiated by the original lender, but rather by a party who claims to “own and hold” the Note securing payment of the loan. Surprisingly, many of these third parties don’t actually have possession of the original note, or the right to enforce the obligation. The Note is a negotiable instrument, like a bank check. Do you know any bank that will cash a “copy” of any check? Likewise, no Court will decide a foreclosure proceeding based upon a “copy” of your Note. If you demand the original Note, and the lender is unable to produce it, a foreclosure judgment cannot legally be obtained. Challenge Your Lender’s Right to Bring the Foreclosure Proceeding In most cases, your original lender did not formally assign or endorse the Note to the new entity. Florida law only permits an action to be presented by the “real party in interest.” If you never signed an agreement with the party that filed the foreclosure, you can challenge their right to file the foreclosure proceedings altogether. Judges will not hesitate to dismiss a foreclosure proceeding initiated by a company that has no legal right to bring the action. The Arcia Law Firm is privileged to successfully represent dozens of homeowners in our community with mortgage fraud, foreclosure defense and bankruptcy cases. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, if you are in the middle of a frustrating loan modification process, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 1-800-770-7102 for a free consultation, or at www.arcialawfirm.com. Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners are also discussed in a new DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a complimentary copy during your free consultation to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team.

The Right Time for an Orthodontic Check–Up Dr. Felipe Norena
W
hen is the best time for your child’s first
orthodontic check-up? The answer is no later than age 7, and here’s why:
▸▸ O rthodontists can spot subtle problems with jaw growth and emerging teeth while some baby teeth are still present. ▸▸ W hile your child’s teeth may appear to be straight, there could be a problem that only an orthodontist can detect. ▸▸ A check up may reveal that your child’s bite is fine. Or, the orthodontist may identify a developing problem but recommend monitoring the child’s growth and development, and then, if indicated, begin treatment at the appropriate time for the child. In the other cases, the orthodontist might find a problem that can benefit from early treatment. ▸▸ Early treatment may prevent or intercept more serious problems from developing and may make treatment at a later age shorter and less complicated. In some cases, the orthodontist will be able to achieve results that may not be possible once the face and jaws have finished growing. ▸▸ Early treatment may give your orthodontist the chance to: Guide jaw growth, lower risk of trauma to protruded front teeth, correct harmful oral habits, improve appearance, guide permanent teeth into a more favorable position and create a more pleasing arrangement of teeth, lips and face
Even if your child is older than 7, it’s certainly not too late for a check-up. Because patients differ in both physiological development and treatment needs, the orthodontist’s goal is to provide each patient with the most appropriate treatment at the most appropriate time. In addition, if you notice any of the following in your child, check with your orthodontist: early or late loss of baby teeth, speech difficulties, difficulty in chewing or biting, biting the cheek or the roof of the mouth, mouth breathing, facial imbalance, jaws that shift or make sounds or grinding or clenching of the teeth Final treatment decisions should be made among the parent, child’s dentist and orthodontist. Through an early orthodontic evaluation, you’ll be giving your child the best opportunity for a healthy, beautiful smile. Tax Credits Can Help Pay for College and Job Training By Frank Gutta, CPA,PFS
I
f you, your spouse, or your dependents are paying
for college or job training, two federal tax credits may help offset the costs. The American Opportunity Credit provides up to $2,500 a year to an eligible student for the first four years of higher education. To qualify, the student must be pursuing a degree or other recognized credential and must be enrolled at least half time for one academic period during the year. The credit can cover tuition, enrollment fees, textbooks, supplies, and equipment, whether or not the materials are bought from the educational institution. Forty percent of the American Opportunity Credit is refundable, which means a student owing no taxes could still receive up to $1,000. The Lifetime Learning Credit can provide up to $2,000 for each year of postsecondary education or each year in which you take courses to acquire or improve job skills, regardless of whether you’re pursuing a degree or credential. The number of years is not limited, and the credit is available for as little as one course. Tuition and fees are covered, but books, supplies, and equipment are only eligible if provided by the educational institution. Since the Lifetime Learning Credit is not refundable, it is limited to offsetting taxes that you owe for the applicable year. The following limitations apply to both credits: 1. You can only claim one of the credits per student in a given tax year (although you can claim a different credit for a different dependent in the same year). 2. If a student qualifies as a dependent, only the parent may claim the credit. 3. Both credits phase out if your modified adjusted gross income exceeds a specified level. If you think you might qualify for one of these credits and would like more details,

Physicians Weight Loss Centers Offer Programs That Never Fail By Debby Teich
A
re you trying to shed those extra pounds to look good for
the summer? Physicians Weight Loss Centers offer serious weight loss that only a physician could deliver. The Centers have seven unique individualized and flexible weight loss programs that are guaranteed to help clients lose weight – with or without HCG. Many clients have lost as much as 28 pounds in only 28 days!
Vanessa Cortes, territorial manager, provided answers to some commonly asked questions about Physicians Weight Loss.
What can clients expect during a consultation? The
initial consultation is free and takes approximately 25 to 30 minutes. After we explain our programs and complete an individual body composition analysis, we determine the most effective program for the client’s body type.
Describe your weight loss systems. We offer our patients a total of seven weight loss plans. The plans are individualized, so they provide the most effective, safest and quickest way for each patient to lose weight. We understand that no two patients are alike. The programs include: VLCD, VLCD Accelerated with HCG, LCD, LFHE, LFHE 1000, LFHE 1500 and Physicians Fast. What kind of results can men and women expect? Men are losing
about 3 to 9 pounds of fat per week. Women are losing 2 to 7 pounds of fat per week. We guarantee 3 to 5 pounds of fat per week.
Do you offer HCG? Why is it so effective? Yes. We have HCG in two forms: pharmaceutical grade injections and Thermogenic HCG Spray. The average weight loss has been Before After been 1/2 to 1.2 pounds of fat per day and the inch loss is also amazing! HCG allows for a patient to burn up to 1,400 calories of their storage fat a day, without any physical activity at all! It also improves moods and enhances the appearance of a patient’s skin, hair and nails. A patient’s focus factor has also been noted to improve while using HCG. How are clients monitored during the weight loss process? We have physi-
cians, nurses and a nutritionist on staff. We see our patients 2 to 3 times a week, for 10 minutes each visit. We weigh them, provide
38 PLT_ALL_0712.indd 38
individualized nutritional planning and counseling, monitor blood pressure and check ketone via urine analysis and body composition analysis. We also do blood work and EKG’s as needed.
How do your weight loss counselors help patients? Our Certified Weight Loss Counselors play a big role in patient programs because they offer the one-on-one support, guidance, counseling and motivation patients need to get through their programs. They are trained to identify a plateau and know how to get the body to burn fat again. Do you offer a maintenance plan? Yes. We include maintenance plans with most of our regular programs. We do not charge any extra for maintenance services. We encourage patients to follow through with maintenance even after they are at their goal weight. We offer maintenance to our patients because Physicians Weight Loss Centers thrive when our patients are successful! Is exercise part of your programs? Exercise
is not a requirement. However, we do encourage some physical activity as patients get closer to their goal weight.
Are you part of a franchise? How is this beneficial? Yes.
We are a franchise. We have been in business for seven years, but the brand has a history of 35 years! We are well known for getting patients quickly and effectively to their goal weight. We also help them maintain their weight by retraining their metabolic systems through our maintenance program.
Do you sell food, nutrition and weight loss products? We offer a wide range of nutritional supplements. Protein supplements play a very important role in protecting the muscle mass in the body. They keep the body burning the moat amount of fat, while satisfying any and all cravings. We also sell appetite suppressants and fat burners, which are great weight loss aides. Multi-vitamins, EMC/mineral tablets and B12 injections also help break down foods in the body more quickly, increase energy levels, keep you burning fat longer, etc. Physicians Weight Loss Centers have locations in Davie, Margate and Boynton Beach. The Plantation office is located at 252 South University Drive, across from Broward/ Westfield Mall. For information, call 954-680-2001.
