It’s Back-to-School Time, Again!
T
here’s an old adage, “Time flies when you’re having fun.”
That’s certainly the case this summer. As hard as it is to believe, it’s time to start planning for back-to-school. That means stocking up on school supplies, scheduling school physicals, and, for kids, enjoying the last few days of staying up late and sleeping in. Soon we will be busy with our school-time routines, juggling carpool, sports practice, and after-school activities. With that also comes the daily rush to get everything, including homework and dinner, done in time. So until that first day of school arrives, let’s take an extra moment to enjoy the last few weeks of summer with our loved ones. Plan a family outing to the beach, or even the backyard pool, or invite some friends over for a backyard barbecue. Before you know it, we’ll be back-toschool and back to our busy lives. Relish these final days of summer!

Green Dream Home Wins Prestigious Award By Julie Levin
F
rom its native irrigation-free landscaping, to the line-up of
energy and water saving features throughout, the greenest home in Plantation is now being honored on a regional level. The Southeast Building Conference (SEBC) recently named L. Synalovski CBC, Inc., and its innovative Canterbury House, as the 2011 Aurora Award winners for Energy Efficient Home. The awards, held in Orlando, were open to building The Canterbury House professionals from 12 Southeastern states plus the eastern Caribbean. “This award is huge because we have a very different and unique product. The Aurora Award in Energy Efficiency solidifies Canterbury House as a major contender in the world of ‘green’ construction,” said company founder Lisa Synalovski of Plantation. With the honor, the Canterbury House in Plantation becomes the only Aurora Award winner in Broward County. Designed by architect Manuel Synalovski of Manuel Synalovski & Associates in Fort Lauderdale and built by L. Synalovski CBC, the Canterbury is 56 percent more efficient than the national energy code requires, but you wouldn’t know if from looking at it from the outside. “It looks the same outside
from any other home. But it is high performance which guarantees minimal amounts of maintenance and a low monthly, operating cost for the homeowner. It makes for an affordable and easy lifestyle,” said Synalovski, who founded the boutique sustainable construction company to build sustainable green homes for families. Efficiency was incorporated in every facet of the construction, including resources and lot design. Energy-efficient features include improved insulation in wall panels, environmentally friendly spray foam insulation sealing attic space, use of caulk and foam to fill any and all building penetrations, highefficiency HVAC system, energy lighting package, and energy-efficient appliances. The home is also designated as FPL Buildsmart Builder, and was independently verified and certified by a Class 1 Energy Rater. Water-efficiency features include water-conserving appliances, low-flow plumbing fixtures, and native Lisa Synalovski xeriscape landscaping. Indoor air quality features include sealing all vents during construction, high MERV filter, bathroom exhaust fans, low-VAC paints, stains and flooring materials. The Canterbury House is also the only certified green home in Broward, certified by with Platinum Certification with the Florida Green Building Coalition (FGBC) and Silver with National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). For more information about the Canterbury home, contact Lisa Synalovski at 954-804-3516, or online at lisa@lsynalovskicbc.com.

Bikers and Backpacks Help Children in Need By Julie Levin
A
Plantation restaurant is going to be the rallying point for a
community-wide effort to make sure no child starts school without the necessary supplies. Bokamper’s Sports Bar & Grill will be hosting a celebration at the conclusion of the YMCA’S Bikers for Backpacks Rally Fun day, and everyone is invited. “It’s going to be a really fun, family-oriented event,” said Dave Pierce, the Director of Marketing for Bokamper’s. Set for August 11, the Bikers for Backpacks event will kick off in the morning at the Parkland YMCA. The riders will set-up their motorcycles in hopes of encouraging families to come by and check them out, while also dropping off donations of school supplies and backpacks. Around 10 a.m., the bikers will head to Bokamper’s Sports Bar & Grill, located at 1280 South Pine Island Road. When they arrive, they’ll drop off the school supplies and enjoy a day of music, a hog roast, prizes and fun for the kids. Everyone in the community, even non-bikers, are invited to come by and help support the project. There will be food specials, including the $9.99 pig roast, and 10% of food and beverage sales will be donated by Bokamper’s to the YMCA. There’s also the opportunity to check out some of the finest rides around. “When people hear biker rally, they might think it is not geared towards family. But the bikers are very familyoriented and generous in giving back to the community and children,” said Matthew Friedman, a volunteer and Board Member at the Parkland YMCA. 100% of all the proceeds from the bike ride and the donations will go to help YMCA of Broward County’s children and families in need through summer camps, after school and youth development programs. While it is the first year for the Bikers for Backpacks rally, the YMCA of Broward has held backpack drives countywide every year. Their aim is to make sure no child starts school without the necessary tools for

celebrated our nation’s independence July 4th with a nearly day long series of events. Rick Case Automotive and the City of Plantation presented the 2012 Independence Day Celebration with a parade, awards ceremony, free concert and fireworks. The day began with the eagerly-awaited parade which began at the intersection of Broward Boulevard and N.W. 46th Avenue, went west to 69th Avenue, right on 4th Street and ended at City Hall. Thousands lined city streets to catch their friends, family and neighbors riding on the floats.

Many then spent the day enjoying barbecues and picnics with family and friends. Later, moms and dads carting the kids, lawn chairs and blankets poured onto the Central Park ball fields to find the best spot to catch the fireworks, and free concert by Viva Classic Rock & Roll. At 9 p.m. Zambelli Internationale presented one of the best fireworks displays in Broward. The free, fun-filled family event also included live entertainment, inflatable rides for the children and food & beverages.

Green Thumb? Plantation Garden Club is Looking to Grow By Julie Levin
D
o you love spending time in your garden, tirelessly experiment-
ing to see what plants will grow in the South Florida heat and soil? If you do, you’ll want to check out the Plantation Garden Club, a local group dedicated to all things green and growing. After taking the summer off, the club is gearing up to get things rolling again in September. “It’s for anyone interested in gardening, meeting new people and having a fun time,” said Jo-Marie McBean, the group’s recording secretary. The Plantation Garden Club meets monthly to share ideas about growing plants in South Florida, socialize and to give back to their community. Their objectives are to promote the love of gardening; floral design; to cultivate a broader knowledge of gardening; to aid in the protection of native trees, and plants; and to encourage civic and environmental responsibility. Members learn from gardening experts, takes field trips to local nurseries, get great deals and discounts and most importantly, learn from each other’s garden experience by sharing seeds and cuttings.”You can literally redo your whole garden from the cuttings we bring in,” said McBean. Members of the Plantation Garden Club pose for a picture during the City’s Green Day Environmental Expo The club has been around in
various forms since 1963 when The Park Planters Garden Club of Plantation was created. The original members had all moved to South Florida and were looking for ways to cultivate in the ‘new’ climate. “They were all transplants from somewhere else, and all wanted to know how to grow things in the sub-tropics,” said McBean. In 1974, the Club affiliated with the Florida Federated Garden Clubs, Inc. and changed their name to Hibiscus Garden Club. It remained under that name until 2006, when it reformed as the Plantation Garden Club. Under the direction of then-President Carol Rose, the group Garden Club President Sheryl Melson presents the club’s once again flourished. With 35-active members right first scholarship to student Jasmine Noval of South now, the group is branching out through service to the Plantation High School. community. They raise money through their annual Plant & Rummage Sale; Fall High Tea Party, and silent auctions at monthly meetings. They also sponsor and maintain the City’s Butterfly Garden, which is in the process of a makeover. This year, the group will be led by President Sheryl Melson. To ensure their funds are spent locally, the Plantation Garden Club also sponsors “green” projects at area schools, collects food & toys to distribute locally and donates trees for Plantation Parks. For the first time, they also awarded a high school scholarship, and intend on awarding two scholarships next year. The group meets the 3rd Wednesday of the month at the El Dorado Club House. Meetings start at 9:30 a.m. and usually include brunch and an educational program. Yearly dues are $20.For more information, call Jo-Marie McBean at 954- 303-5233.

Video Contest Winners Take on Problem of Bullying By Julie Levin

and Eddie Hurowitz believed they could make a difference in the fight against bullying. The trio combined their talents recently to create a video that won them high honors in a local competition.”The three of us put our minds together and felt that it was the best way to express why bullying is not okay,” said Kahn, 15 who along with Bell lives in Plantation. Hurowitz is from Hollywood. The teens took third place in the Mosaic Theatre’s STOP! The Violence Video Contest. The Plantation-based theater group put out a call for video entries from high school students earlier this year, looking for creative way for students to stand up and express their feelings about the growing problem of bullying. Students were encouraged to express “Three Amigos” -Eddie Hurowitz, themselves any way they The Brett Kahn, and Brandon Bell wanted: monologue, scene, song, illustration, animation, collage, or dance. Kahn, Bell and Hurowitz acted out a scenario where a school bully comes to learn the error of his ways, after bullying a smaller classmate. They named their video entry “Rebirth”. “It was something that really spoke to me and my friends,” said Kahn. All three boys are classmates at the University School of Nova Southeastern University. The video contest was held in connection with the theater’s first world premiere play, A Measure of Cruelty by Joe Calarco, which ran from April 19-May 13. The play was inspired by actual events of 2009 when a 15 year old South Florida boy was doused with rubbing alcohol and set on fire by four teenagers. The contest was designed to help high school students find innovative ways to battle Eddie Hurowitz, Brett Kahn and Brandon bullying. The theater received Bell act out a scene from “Rebirth” numerous contest entries from area high schools, and finalists were chosen based on votes cast by Facebook friends and by a panel of celebrity judges including: Brett Loewenstern (semifinalist, American Idol Season 10), Emmy Award Winner Louis Aguirre (of WSVN’s Deco Drive), and playwright Joe Calarco. Kahn, Bell and Hurowitz, who call themselves the “Three Amigos”, are all athletes at school. Kahn, who along with Bell plays football for the University School, says bullying is an issue often addressed by his team’s head coach. Hurowitz is a member of the school’s Lacrosse Team. All the teens realize that bullying can happen anywhere, and come in many different forms. “Verbal and emotional abuse hurts just as much as physical abuse,” said Kahn. First place went to Alex Novell of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School for his video entitled “Stop The Violence.” Second place went to Kali Rosendo, also of the University School of NSU, for a video entitled “Words Hurt”.

TAG USA Gymnastics Creates Champions
T
AG USA Gymnastics had a stellar season, with championship trophies stacked up taller than most of its gymnasts. In the three short years since Marissa and Michael Zoldan became owners, they have built the gym into the most successful gymnastics program in Broward County. The couple shared TAG USA’s season highlights and the secrets to their success.
TAG USA Gymnastics had an incredible season. What were your greatest accomplishments? Marissa: It has been another great year
for TAG USA Gymnastics. This past season, our Level 3, Level 4 and Prep-Optional Girls teams all earned State Championships and many of our gymnasts were individual event State Champions. Five TAG USA gymnasts earned coveted spots on the Florida State Team. To qualify, the girls had to be the top scoring gymnasts in the State Meet in their age divisions. Our Boys Gymnastics team had a phenomenal year as well with nine individual State Champions, two Regional Champions and our Elite athlete won seven gold medals at the Mexican Nationals. Our Trampoline team won at each meet, finished first at the State Championships and qualified 26 athletes for the National Championships. Even our new Cheer team won their competitions to become State Champions. Michael: In the three short years that we have owned the gym, TAG USA has definitely become the premier gymnastics program in Fort Lauderdale. We have transformed and can compare ourselves to the top state gymnastics programs.
What are people saying about TAG USA Gymnastics? Michael: What the community hears most about TAG USA is that we are very different from the other local gyms. Our state-of-the-art facility and the amount of new equipment is amazing. Our classes are very structured with lesson plans and our coaches are fingerprinted and certified. All of our classes and team levels train by USAG standards and it makes a big difference. Mostly, parents hear about our gym’s growth and many championships and want their children to experience TAG USA’s unique gymnastics and trampoline programs. What is the secret to your program’s success? Marissa: The TAG
TAG USA Gymnastics Elite Team Scholarship Program All Level 9, 10 and Elite Girl Gymnasts are eligible for a Tuition Scholarship for the 2012-2013 Season. Application deadline is August 28th For more information contact Silvana at (954) 384-9393 our class or team athletes have to wait in lines or share equipment with groups. There is a lot of space and new equipment for all recreational classes and also separate equipment for our boys, girls, optionals and tramp teams. Our programs have more training and less waiting which allows for better workouts and success.
You have made customer service a top priority. Why is this so important? Marissa: When we first bought TAG we needed to change
TAG’s image. We immediately upgraded the coaching staff and created a serious gymnastics program, but we also made a commitment to customer service. One major difference between TAG USA and other gyms is the individual attention that every family receives from Michael and I. Our staff will get to know your family and make every effort to satisfy your child’s needs. Michael: At TAG USA, a parent can actually speak with an owner who will address their questions or concerns.
You recently added new air conditioning to the 38,000 squarefoot gym, what other changes have you made? Marissa: Everyone
knows that there are always changes and something new at TAG and we continue to add and improve our Weston facility. We opened a large bar pit for our optional athletes and added a second trampoline for our Tramp and Tumbling Team. We just completed an indoor basketball/soccer court for summer camp and classes, as well as a new Trampoline Jump Zone for moms and their younger kids to enjoy. We also opened a game room that will be used for birthday parties and Saturday Night Open Gym.
USA program pushes technique and trains for higher skills. As a former Elite gymnast, I know that in order to build a rock solid program you need to have an unparalleled coaching staff dedicated to teaching new skills and encouraging gymnasts to progress at their own pace. Other gyms hold back their gymnasts to repeat classes over and over or repeat team levels. Our gym encourages 2011 Level 4 Girls Gymnastics Champions athletes to progress. Here, a gymnast who masters skills can move up in levels at any point in the session. Before we bought TAG USA, our daughter Maia was a Level 5 gymnast at another gym, but after three years of training with our program, she is now on Level 10. We train at a very high level which is one of the reasons our athletes out-perform other gyms.
What else differentiates TAG USA Gymnastics from other gyms? Michael: When we bought TAG three
years ago, we determined that our gym needed to be completely different than other established gymnastic centers. Our children were members at another local gym and we knew that we wanted the “new” TAG to run differently in program content and customer service. Marissa: What’s most unique about TAG USA is the amount of training space within the gym. Neither

Plantation Teen Finds a Spot on Reality Television Show By Julie Levin
A
lifelong Plantation resident is in the national spotlight this
summer. Tiffany Maher, 19, has been dancing to an audience of millions after making it to the top 20 on the Fox Television Network’s show “So You Think You Can Dance”. The 2011 South Plantation High School graduate says it is nothing short of a dream come true. “It’s crazy to watch yourself perform on national television. I’ve been watching the show since season one and to be chosen to be a part of this incredible experience is amazing,” said Maher, during a break from show rehearsals. Tiffany has deep roots in Plantation. She was salutatorian of her class at South Plantation, where she was a student in the school’s Environmental Magnet Program. She was also involved in DECA (a national student marketing association), cheerleading and the school’s chapter of the National Honor Society. Before attending South Plantation, she was a student at Plantation Middle School, Central Park Elementary and Developmental Pre - School a nd Kindergarten. Tiffany’s mother, Marla is a 5th grade teacher at Fox Trail Elementary School and her father, Brian, is a school resource officer at West Broward High School. She began dancing at 3 years old at Central Park and hasn’t stopped since. She says it is her passion and being on the show has been a true learning experience, particularly working with some of the best in the dance choreography world. “I’ve Tiffany Maher on Fox Television’s “So You Think You Can Dance” watched this show and seen their work. I’ve grown up dreaming about learning from them,” she said. As for dancing in front of the judges, particularly head resident judge Nigel Lythgoe, she says it can be stressful so she tries to forget they are sitting in front of her. “Even though I am nervous when I walk over to them, I can’t wait to hear what they have to say,” she said. Before the show, Tiffany also had small roles in the films “Rock of Ages” and “Step Up Revolution”. She’s also enrolled at the University of Central Florida, where she is studying public affairs. She hopes to dance for as long as she can, and one day run her one studio or work with the Dizzy Feet Foundation, which changes lives through dance. “I want to incorporate dance and help others, because dance has helped me my whole life,” she said. Win or lose on “So You Think You Can Dance”, Tiffany says she hoped to stick around for as long as possible to learn as much as possible. “It’s national television. It’s huge. I am making so many connections and friends. Even in just two weeks worth of time, I feel like I am a different dancer,” she said.

“A” for Effort for Plantation Teacher By Julie Levin
T
hink Andrea Gresham took the summer off to relax after
winning Teacher of the Year honors at Plantation Elementary School? Not a chance. The Plantation resident has been busy taking training classes and is already deep into her planning for the upcoming school year. “I have a huge mound of projects behind my couch that I brought home and want to get finished before next year,” admitted the 34-year old first grade school teacher. It’s exactly that kind of drive that led to not only Teacher of the Year honors for Gresham, but a host of other accomplishments over the past school year. Gresham has only been teaching for six years, but makes a considerable difference in the classroom and in the lives of her young students. She says it is the children that spur her on. “I really get a lot out of showing them new things, Teacher of the Year Andrea Gresham and making sure that they can get and her first grade class something out of it, whether it is life skills they can apply later in life, or seeing that there are teachers that care about them that will go above and beyond for them,” said Gresham, who along with husband Scott, has lived in Plantation for nearly ten years. In addition to being named “Teacher of the Year” at Plantation Elementary, Gresham was also named the inaugural Teacher of the Month for the Florida Panthers, an initia-

tive that recognizes educators in the South Florida area for their accomplishments and impact on students. She also is the school’s Box Tops Coordinator, a post that led to her getting seven whipped cream pies in her face, courtesy of the top student in each grade level who brought in the most box tops. Money raised from Box Tops goes towards school supplies. She’s also the TerraCycle Coordinator, which collects used Capri Suns, empty glue sticks and lunchable containers to raise money for school supplies, Pie in the eye: Gresham had seven whipped cream works with the Marching into Manhood program, men- pies tossed in her face tors students, has had two classes that have won Florida to help raise Box Tops for school supplies Panther story writing contests and maintains positive relationships with Cristina Carriazo School Supply Fund and Sisters of Mercy who actively donate supplies to her classroom. Perhaps her most impressive honor, being honored by the Broward County Commission on the Status of Women in March for those who Advocate for the Women in Broward. It was huge surprise,” she said. “I felt a little intimidated by the women around me. I’ve only been teaching six years and some have been working in their careers and making a difference for 20-30 years already.” For Gresham, it is all in a day’s work. She says she has always known she wanted to be a teacher, a career both her father and grandmother followed. Now that it is her turn, she says she’ll continue giving all she has to the students at her Plantation Elementary School, a Title One school, where many of the students come from homes where English is a second language. She says their love for learning is contagious. “They are truly my inspiration,” she said.

Cryoablation – Treatment for Cardiac Arrhythmias By Wendy S. Levenson EdD, RN Director of Education-Westside Regional Medical Center
P
atients with cardiac arrhythmias are commonly treated first
with medications such as digoxin, beta-blockers and other types of drugs to regulate their heartbeat. When medications fail to control the condition or their side effects are not well tolerated, other surgical and non-surgical treatments are considered. A form of catheter-delivered therapy for cardiac arrhythmias, called cryoablation is done to disable heart cells that are creating an irregular heartbeat. Cryoablation, uses extreme cold, exposing the abnormal tissue to sub-zero temperatures to destroy it. Cryoablation has long been used to treat different forms of cardiac arrhythmias. From early surgical applications to the more recent catheter-driven treatments, this energy source has proven to be safe and effective in the treatment of many supraventricular arrhythmias. Cardiac ablation therapy offers several advantages over other forms of therapy for cardiac arrhythmias. Medications are almost always imperfect in their ability to control arrhythmias. Side effects may limit the dose and hence the effectiveness of medications and overall, the cost of treatment for a lifetime of medications is far greater than for outpatient ablation. Cardiac ablation is an effective and low risk treatment for cardiac arrhythmias. Furthermore, cardiac ablation provides a permanent cure of the cardiac arrhythmia with virtually no side effects. During the procedure, a long thin tube is inserted
through a major blood vessel and threaded to the heart. Catheter cryoablation uses extremely cold temperatures (to -90 degrees Celsius) to destroy very small, carefully selected areas of heart tissue that are causing the irregular rhythm. Cryoablation is an approach that gives physicians an opportunity to assess the cooling effect on both normal and abnormal pathways. The arrhythmia is “mapped,” with the tissue being cooled from normal body temperature (37 C) to 0 C. If a normal pathway is observed to stop conducting, the catheter can be thawed and the pathway will return to normal conduction. If cooling is seen to affect only the arrhythmia, however, the temperature can be further reduced to sub-zero temperatures to permanently eliminate the pathway. The special ablation catheter will be inserted into a blood vessel in the groin, upper thigh area, arm, or wrist. The area will be cleaned. It will also be numbed with anesthesia. The relatively non-invasive cryoablation procedure allows patients to go home the same day and resume normal activities shortly thereafter. The success rate of the procedure is generally very good, and depends on many factors, such as the duration of the condition, the presence of valve disease or coronary artery disease, the type of arrhythmia and the size of the atria. For a free referral to a primary care physician in the area, contact Westside Regional Medical Center’s toll-free physician referral and health information line at 1-800-618-2631.

Dance Academy (IDA) as it prepares for yet another spectacular season. The studio certainly raised the bar again last year. Not only did its annual production of The Nutcracker ballet sell-out with over 7,000 people attending the full-scale, professional production, but its summer performance of Cinderella received standing ovations as well. To add to the long list of successes, two IDA advanced students qualified and danced in the World “Olympics” of Ballet – an achievement shared by only 24 girls and six boys worldwide. During this prestigious event, Abbey Kay was the center of attention with ballet companies abroad. However, following an audition on her return home, Abbey chose the Sarasota Ballet Company and will proudly take her first steps as a professional ballerina this month. One of the reasons the International Dance Academy is so successful is its incredible staff led by Artistic Director Deborah Buttner and Co-Director Mary Buttner. These

The exquisite piece of music was composed by her brother, Greg Buttner. “Dancing to my brother’s music with my own amazing students, most of whom I have taught since a very young age, was undoubtedly one of the most special moments of my life!” said Deborah proudly. “Abbey Kay and Alice Schreiber, two graduating students dance as principals, and the corps de ballet are all current pupils of IDA. I could not be more proud of each of them!” Bardo can be viewed on the International Dance Academy website (www.danceIDA.com). Florida’s proven premier Ballet School. In addition to the Directors who are active teachers and choreographers, IDA boasts a highly educated and exceptionally trained international faculty, acknowledged as superior in the area. IDA has proven, through 13 years of service to the community, to be South Florida’s premier ballet school, and offers a complete menu of dance classes for all ages. IDA is simply the best, taking the dancer from class to professional stage with excellent results. Fall classes, which begin on August 20th, are

Deborah is a graduate of the prestigious London Studio Center Classical Ballet program who trained in both England and South Africa. As a professional dancer, she toured the British Isles and America performing numerous lead roles. As an instructor, she is qualified in both the Royal Academy of Dance and Cecchetti methods. “I believe that demonstrating the most demanding classical techniques and variations is essential to inspiring and correctly training students,” explains Deborah, who continues to grace the professional stage with her exceptional talent. Recently, she danced the lead role in Bardo with her partner, Eriberto Jimenez. He is a master

For adults, the studio offers classical ballet classes at beginner through intermediate levels; the studio is also home to the daily Jazzercise adult exercise program. New this year, IDA will be offering “Partnering and Repertoire” danced in tutus. Deborah and Eriberto, together with experienced male danseurs, will teach the delicate and highly technical art of partnering to students, both male and female, as well as pas de deux and solo work from the Classics. IDA is the only school in South Florida to offer the Royal Academy of Dance instruction and certification. RAD is the most highly-regarded educational training and examining body for classical ballet in the world, under the patronage of Queen Elizabeth II. Dancers study a defined curriculum and must pass a series of examinations satisfying the extraordinarily high standards of the RAD in order to be awarded certification. “Whether dancing for fun or pursuing a dance career, the Royal Academy of Dance credentials put our dancers at a great advantage,” states Mary. “Besides the Diploma being an impressive addition to any college application, the dancers also gain the confidence and the great satisfaction of knowing they met the most rigorous international standards in dance.” International RAD examination and results. A number of students were evaluated this past year by an examiner who traveled from Paris, France, and all scored extraordinary well. Four IDA students earned Merit and 26 dancers earned Distinctions. “Year after year, we

Open House Invitation – Come dressed for a fun day of dance on Saturday, August 11th from 1-4pm. The open house will feature free ballet classes, free jazz classes, refreshments, plus a chance to meet the Directors, teachers and staff. The registration fee will be waived for dancers presenting proof of registration elsewhere. Summer Intensive. Young dancers who want to kick-start their dance year can register for IDA’s one-week Summer Intensive Program taking place August 13-18th. According to Deborah, the stretching, strengthening and technique classes will “shake off the cobwebs” and
get dancers ready for the fall classes or to audition for The Nutcracker. Visiting dancers are most welcome! Annual Theatrical Performances. As part of a child’s all-round education and development, the performing company, the International Ballet Company, is established to offer full-length professional performances, rather than recitals or studio shows. “We like to inspire our young dancers through the challenges, excitement and learning that comes with
performing on stage in a spectacular and professional, full-length theater production, before an appreciative audience,” explains Deborah. Two annual theatrical performances are danced before packed audiences giving the dancers the opportunity to showcase their hard work and allowing them to shine in front of family and friends. The Nutcracker will be performed at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts December 14 – 16th. “We welcome auditions by dancers who want the experience of dancing in a full-scale professional production at a major performing arts theater. We have roles for all ages and skill levels, from the tiniest mouse to the exquisite Sugar Plum Fairy,” says Deborah. This will be the studio’s 13th performance of this holiday spectacle and this year’s production promises to be bigger and better than ever. In addition to a cast of over 130 talented dancers, from three years old to professional, the production will feature fabulous costumes, extravagant scenery and spectacular stage effects. It is an unbelievable experience for all young dancers with memories to treasure forever! Auditions to take part in The Nutcracker will be held on September 15th. The International Ballet Academy has no equal! The family-friendly, 5,500 square foot, teaching facility includes three studios, a large foyer, observation windows, sprung floors, all fully air conditioned. It also offers easy and safe drop-off/pick-up at the front door. International Dance Academy, founded in 2000, is located in the Broward Lakes Business Park at 825 Shotgun Road in Weston. Are You a Victim of Predatory Lending Practices? By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

redatory lending is when a lender imposes abusive, unfair and
sometimes illegal loan terms on borrowers, without regard for the borrowers’ ability to repay the loan. When two or more of the following factors are present in a mortgage transaction, the subsequent forensic audit performed on that loan has revealed serious violations of federal and state lending laws. Property Purchased or Refinanced Between 2003 and 2007. This four year period marked the peak of the real estate boom in South Florida. Just about anyone, including foreign nationals without regard for past credit history or current ability to pay, could obtain a “sub-prime” loan for up to 115% of the value of the mortgaged property. The sub-prime mortgage market thrived during this time, allowing borrowers to encumber their properties well beyond their true market values. Mortgage Loan Contains an Adjustable Rate or “ARM” Feature. These types of loans are initially set at an artificially low interest rate for a brief period of time. They then switch to an adjustable rate for the remaining term of the loan, and the rate can increase as often as every six months. Even if the U.S. interest rate index remains unchanged, the monthly payments on these loans could increase by up to 50%. Mortgage Loan Suffers From Negative Amortization. Negative amortization occurs when the monthly mortgage payment is not sufficient to even cover the interest due, and therefore, the balance of the loan increases over time even though payments have been made. If you owe more today on your home loan than when you originally purchased or refinanced, your loan is negatively amortized. Mortgage Loan is Interest-Only or Pick-a-Payment. Under these types of loans, the borrower is only required to pay the interest due on the loan, or a minimum payment that does not cover the interest on the loan. After a few years, the required monthly payment is usually increased to cover the outstanding principal balance. Once the loan payment increases, so does the likelihood that the borrower will default. Mortgage Loan Approval Was Based Only on Stated Income. Many borrowers from 2003-2007 were given “stated income” loans, in which they were qualified based on statements in the loan application as to their income. These statements of income were largely unverified, and often the “stated income” required for the loan to be approved was the exact amount included in the application by the mortgage broker. If two or more of these factors apply to your current loan, you should have a forensic audit of your loan performed to find out whether you have been a victim of predatory lending. If you possess these claims, and they are timely raised against your lender, you may be entitled to actual damages and/or a reduction of the amount you owe on your loan. Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners are also discussed in a new DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” Mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, and you will receive a free copy during your consultation with a member of our legal team.

Signs the Bite’s Not Quite Right Dr. Felipe Norena
I
t’s not always easy to tell when your child has
an orthodontic problem. Even teeth that look straight might be hiding a problem bite. So how can you tell if that is the case? Here are some clues that may indicate the need for orthodontic attention. ▸▸ Early or late loss of baby teeth ▸▸ Difficulty in chewing or biting ▸▸ Breathing through the mouth ▸▸ Thumb-sucking ▸▸ Crowded, misplaced or blocked-out teeth ▸▸ Jaws that are too far forward or back ▸▸ Biting the cheek or biting into the roof of the mouth ▸▸ Protruding teeth ▸▸ Upper and lower teeth that don’t meet, or meet in an abnormal way ▸▸ Any unbalanced facial appearance ▸▸ Grinding or clenching of the teeth While orthodontic treatment most often begins between the ages of 9 and 14, some orthodontic problems are easier to correct if they are treated early. Not only do wellaligned teeth look good and feel good, they also are important to good dental health. Poorly aligned teeth can lead to dental problems. Orthodontists are dental specialists who diagnose, prevent and treat dental and facial irregularities. They receive an additional two to three years of specialized education beyond dental school to learn the proper way to align and straighten teeth. Not everyone needs orthodontic treatment. But if your child does need help, it pays to start treatment when you have the greatest chances for success. Make sure your

Unlock the “Back-Door” Roth IRA By Frank Gutta, CPA,PFS
I
f you can’t contribute to a Roth IRA the conven-
tional way, it doesn’t mean that you’re locked out of this attractive vehicle for retirement savings. The key is to take a “back-door” approach using a nondeductible IRA. First, here’s some background information. Contributions to a traditional IRA may be tax-deductible, but deductions are phased out if your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) exceeds a specific level and you (or your spouse) are an active participant in an employer’s retirement plan. Contributions made on a nondeductible basis are tax-free when withdrawn, although any earnings are still taxable. In contrast, contributions to a Roth IRA can’t be deducted, but “qualified distributions” from the Roth in existence at least five years are 100% tax-free. This includes distributions made after attaining age 59½. Furthermore, unlike traditional IRAs, you’re not required to take annual distributions from a Roth after age 70½. The problem is that ability to contribute
Frank Gutta & Co. CPA, PA Florida Certified Public Accountants & Business Advisors
to a Roth IRA is phased out for certain high-income taxpayers. But there’s a potential solution: If you establish a traditional IRA with nondeductible contributions, you can then convert it to a Roth IRA, effectively circumventing the prohibition on Roth contributions. Previously, conversions were restricted to taxpayers with less than $100,000 of MAGI, but this barrier was removed in 2010. The only drawback to this back-door strategy is that any distribution from a traditional IRA is taxed under a “pro rata” rule based on the total amount in all your IRAs. Discover Craft Beer at
Davie Discount Liquors
Y
ou’ve probably noticed that beer has been growing in popularity over the past year, especially here in South Florida. But it’s not just any beer that’s seen a boom in sales. It’s craft beer -- also known as microbrews -- that are experiencing a foamy renaissance. More and more these days you’ll find these unique and creative brews on tap at restaurants and bars, and on shelves at liquor stores such as Davie Discount Liquors.
But just what is craft beer? And what makes it different from the typical, yellow, fizzy beer that most people think about when they hear the word “beer?” Well, to put it simply, craft beer is an artisan product. It’s made by people who are dedicated and passionate about their trade. Just like people who produce local and organic food, or master vintners who make award-winning wines, craft brewers are making beer the way it’s meant to be made. They brew beer with the best ingredients they can find, using techniques that are time-honored and traditional. Unlike conventional “macro” beers, craft brewers don’t use cheap ingredients like rice or corn to make beer taste lighter or make it less expensive. They use real, American-grown barley and hops to produce hundreds of unique and interesting beer styles. And in a turn of American-born ingenuity and enterprise, it’s those American craft brewers that are redefining beer by making new and innovative styles coveted the world over. The great news is you can find a huge variety of these full-flavored, creative brews at Davie Discount Liquors. The store stocks a huge variety of beers from some of the best American and import craft breweries. Breweries like Dogfish Head from Milton, Delware, who make everything from hoppy, floral-tasting India Pale Ales to ancient beers brewed with saffron and spices culled from Egypt. And then there are the local beers made here in the state of Florida, such as Cigar City Maduro Brown, a rich brown ale that’s light in body but full of the flavors of cocoa and fresh-roasted coffee. At Davie Discount, you’ll find over 150 awardwinning craft beers at competitive prices. So whether you’re new to craft beer or you’re a seasoned collector, there’s a brew for everybody. So raise a glass and toast with us. Cheers!

relaxants and told to rest for 2-4 weeks . Then I decided to go to a Chiropractor. I did not even know what a Chiropractor was or did. There was 20-30 people in his waiting room and they all walked out smiling. The Chiropractor did an exam, took x-rays and then did some physical therapy which felt like a bunch of ants dancing on my back with ice. He then showed me my X-rays and said I had a pinched nerve in my back and he was going to perform an adjustment. I walked out feeling slightly better. After a few visits, my leg pain stopped, my back felt better and I even walked better and was able to sleep that night .
Please tell us a little bit about your background? I’ve received my doctorate in Chiropractic and I am an international lecturer on holistic related topics. When I was in college doing a 400 pound squat for the 12th rep, I had severe pain in my back going down my left leg and lost the squat. I basically had to be carried to the bench and I couldn’t walk. My Dad took me to the family physician, then the orthopedist. I was given pain killers and muscle
Being a chiropractic physician is a little like being an auto mechanic. We do the ‘fixin” and let a higher power that has put us together or created us do the rest. Through ancient wisdom, research, trials errors, intuition and common sense we can find and use nature’s energies to heal. Another one of my passions is energy medicine or Mind -Body Medicine. It’s not a cure all or panacea, but has incredible potential to normalize the body using energetic frequencies including homeopathy and acupuncture. I have been doing it for 20 plus years. It amazes me that I help people with allergies, diabetes, hormonal imbalances, hypertension, MS, eczema, autism, ADD, and a whole list of autoimmune diseases with a great deal of success. My objective is to get to the root cause. I have a true general practitioner’s practice using holistic functional medicine. While neck and back pains are still my forte and usually very easy to treat, I also enjoy challenges and “impossible cases.” I am looking for the miracles. The more I look for them, the more I can find. Do you offer free consultations? Payment plans? We offer free consultations by appointment. We also have affordable payment plans. How can clients reach you? Quantum Wellness Center is located at 1261 South Pine Island Road in Plantation. You can phone them at 954-370-1900 or find them online at www. drpopkin.com.

“
At the age of 5 years old, my son, Scottie, was unable to attend birthday parties, could not participate in sporting events, and felt left out of enjoying his childhood due to chronic illnesses of food and environmental factors. Since he began his treatments with Dr. Popkin he is enjoying a healthy asthmafree childhood and can participate in sports. The best news is, that for the first time, he can go to camp and enjoy foods without having allergic reactions. No longer needing to live on a special diet has allowed me and my family to finally enjoy life. To me, this is a miracle! I am so thankful for finding Dr. Popkin and to experience NAET, a natural method for eliminating allergy symptoms. - Susan G.
