publisher’s page Happy One Year Anniversary!

A

lthough you may have been unaware that the management of our publications changed in May 2010, you probably noticed the gradual improvements in presentation, layout and content made throughout the year. We provide the only source of relevant community and school news for many of our readers, and the feedback has been extremely positive. In addition to the established Our City Weston and Davie Town Times magazines, we introduced two new publications, the Pines Miramar Town Times and the Plantation Town Times. Now our award-winning, local community news magazines arrive every month in 80,000 mail boxes across Southwest Broward County. In addition, all of our publications are available online at www.ourcityweston.com. I would like to thank our readers and customers, as well as our dedicated staff, for making this success possible. Here’s to another successful year to come. Sincerely,

SvenSvenBudzisch Budzisch Publisher/Owner

community news Buy One Museum Membership, See Them All With Bamm! By Julie Levin

I

t is the ultimate in buying one, and getting something free. During the month of June, anyone who buys one membership to one of 17 local attractions, museums or cultural centers, can get into all of them for free for the entire month. It’s called BAMM, or Broward Attractions and Museums Month, and the Plantation Historical Museum is once again taking part. “We have done it since it began a few years ago,” said Shirley Schuler, the Curator of the Plantation Historical Museum. Backed by the logo “Join One, Experience Them All,” BAMM offers museums and attractions that provide an experience for all ages. It might be spending an evening enjoying an movie at Cinema Paradiso, walking inside an aviary and being one with nature at Flamingo Gardens, child’s play at The Children’s Museum of Boca Raton or Young at Art or celebrating Seminole Indian Traditions at Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum. Current and new members of the participating museums and attractions will receive free entry with proof of membership. “South Florida is a prime destination with a unique array of activities and attractions to enjoy,” said Mary Birch-Hanson of the Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum & the organizer of BAMM. “Whether a person has been a longtime museum supporter or has just signed up, the program enables everyone to experience the attractions and cultural scene for the price of one membership.” At the Plantation Historical Museum, even though daily admission is free, guests can buy a family membership under the BAMM program for just $25. With that, they’ll not only enjoy all the exhibits at Plantation facility, but free general admission at 16 other attractions all month. Schuler says the worse the economy gets, the more people take them up on the offer. “How many families can afford to take children to museums these days?” she said. Exhibits include artifacts from the Seminole and Tequesta tribes, a Dinosaur exhibit, memorabilia from the Fire and Police departments, and the city’s “Then

and Now” exhibit, which looks at life in Plantation through the years. Participating institutions include: African-American Research Library and Cultural Center, Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, Bonnet House Museum & Gardens, Boca Raton Historical Society, Cinema Paradiso, Flamingo Gardens, Fort Lauderdale History Center, IGFA - Fishing Hall of Fame, International Swimming The Plantation Historical Museum is one of 17 attractions and museums taking part in Broward Hall of Fame Museum, Historic Attractions and Museums Month in June Stranahan House Museum, Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale - Nova Southeastern University, Old Davie School Historical Museum, Old Dillard Museum, Plantation Historical Museum, Seminole Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum, The Children’s Museum Boca Raton and Young At Art The Plantation Historical Museum is located at 511 North Fig Tree Lane in Plantation. For more information, you can phone them at 954-797-2722. They are open TuesdaySaturday from 9:00 AM-12:00 Noon; 1:00-4:00 PM (closed 12:00-1:00 PM for lunch). The last guided tour @ 3:30 p.m. and group tours must be booked in advance. For more information on BAMM please log on to www.bamminfo.org or call Mary Birch-Hanson at 954.364.5205

community news Actors Work on their Craft at Plantation Club By Julie Levin

P

rofessional and aspiring actors looking to hone their craft are invited to bring their skills to a newly formed club in Plantation. The Actor’s Playhouse TM Club got off the ground in February with the idea of providing a “practice” venue for actors of all levels. “We are a club open to actors, or people who are committed to training to becoming an actor, and want a place to come and work-out their training muscle,” said Angela Bryan, the Founder and President of the non-profit group. The Actor’s Playhouse TM Club meets twice a month on the first and third Wednesday at the Schacknow Museum of Fine Arts in Plantation. Depending on the day, they may get up to a dozen actors ready to work. Bryan is quick to point out that the club is a place for actors to fine-tune their skills, rather than learn the craft from the ground up, as they might in a class or workshop. “We sharpen each other,” she said. The group is a helpful link for actors looking for a way to practice, without spending a fortune traveling to expensive workshops or lessons. “That’s one of the common complaints I have heard over the years as an actor. Maybe you can fly to L.A. for a seminar, or to meet a casting director. But what do you do if you don’t have the money to do another one?” Bryan said. Instead they rely on each other, running skits, doing monologues or cold readings. Audience members give immediate feedback to how they did. “We have a group of like-minded people who give peer reviews,” she said. They also hope to begin bringing in casting directors, agents, independent film directors and others in the business who can help run mock auditions, and provide valuable insight. Andrew Brown, Angela Bryan and Carrie Hall The TM in the Actor’s Playhouse work through a skit at a recent meeting TM Club stands for Toastmasters, an international group that helps people hone their speaking skills. Bryan says great public speaking skills are vital for actors. “It is great for an actor who is about to be interviewed, or about to accept that award one day,” she said. New members are invited to come up to three times before making the decision about joining in. “We want participants and not just audience members. We want people who want to work out with us and aren’t there just for entertainment,” said Bryan, who has had a professional acting career for the past five years. The Actor’s Playhouse TM Club is located at the Schacknow Museum of Fine Arts, located at 7080 N.W. 4TH Street in Plantation. For more information, contact Angela Bryan at 954- 661-8202

Schacknow Museum Offers Class for Special Kids By Julie Levin

A

ny parent of a child with special needs will tell you it is difficult to find services and programs for their children, once they reach their teen years. A new program meeting at the Schacknow Museum of Fine Arts in Plantation is looking to change that. “We try to integrate all the different learning disabilities together as one group, so we can encourage, help, and support each other so we can learn how to communicate with each other,” Karen Murray and Jackie Elkin said Kim Clark, the Director of the new program show off their craft project. which is called “Camilo’s Creative Corner” at the Schacknow Museum. The class, which meets weekly, is designed for teens and above with a variety of special needs, particularly autism. The youngest student right now is 16 years old. Each week, up to 35 people get together at the Schacknow Museum, located at 7080 N.W. 4th Street to socialize, meet other teens, do improvisational skits and creative projects. Every week, they do a different project so the students have something to take home. “For this type of child, there are not a lot of programs,” said Dixie Lee Hedrington, who coordinates the craft projects. The program is named for Camilo Rodriguez, a 21-year artist with Down Syndrome. Five years ago, he visited the museum and showed founder Max Schacknow a sample of his work. Schacknow framed one of the works, and their relationship has grown ever since. Rodriguez now has an entire wall devoted to his artwork, which he does in pencil, colored pencil, watercolor and oil paint. Knowing Camilo also loves to perform, Schacknow decided to organize a class where he could do just that with other special needs teens. “I give them a chance to get out of the house and let their mom and dad

enjoy themselves too,” said Schacknow, who turned 88 in December. He also loves throwing pizza parties for the students at least once a week. The Schacknow Museum of Fine Arts was created to provide a venue for artists, some well known and some obscure, to share their work with the community. The Museum was founded by Schacknow, a self-taught, Brooklyn New York born artist, who realized how difficult it was for unknown artists to showcase their talent. His museum boasts a permanent Max Schacknow, founder of the Schacknow Museum, and Camilo Rodriguez. collection and holdings of more than 2500 objects and includes graphite and oils on canvas, photography and sculpture. Three galleries are devoted to the works of Schacknow, who began creating art in 1952. After establishing a successful textile brokerage business, he resumed creating art in 1973. The SMOFA project has been his passion since he moved to Florida in the mid-1990s, finally opening its doors to the public in June of 2000. Camilo’s mother Priscilla says the class has made a big difference for her son in a short time. In a few months, they are hoping to put together a production of “The Lion King”. “He just loves it. He just wants to come here all the time. He’s not very verbal but I notice he is starting to express himself more since coming here,” she said. The public is invited to come check out the class. It is free of charge and focuses on teens with special needs. Camilo’s Creative Corner meets Saturday’s from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Schacknow Museum of Fine Arts, located at 7080 N.W. 4th Street in Plantation. You can phone them at 954-583-5551 or find them online at www. smofa.com.

og bite cases really hit home, especially when a cherished pet dog bites a child. According to the Centers for Disease and Control, 4.5 million Americans are bitten by dogs each year. And, of that, one in five dog bites results in injuries that require medical attention. Unfortunately, children ages 5 to 9 years rate highest for dog bite related injuries. As a personal injury attorney, I have had my share of unfortunate dog bite cases. In almost every case, it was the first time that the dog bit a person. In almost every single case, the dog owner was surprised that the dog bit a human being because it had no aggressive history and had never bitten anyone else in the past. This topic is especially personal to me because I am a father who is very protective of my children. Most parents don’t know the dangers associated with dogs. Unfortunately, I see it all the time. Many times, when families are walking in the neighborhood or at a park, parents permit their kids to walk up to dogs and pet them. I don’t allow that because I know first hand what a first bite can do. I have witnessed injuries that still resonate in my mind.

I am asking that all Moms and Dads in South Florida be extremely cautious with your children around dogs. Even if the dog’s owner tells you that his/her dog is great with kids and has never bitten anyone before, do not let your children pet dogs that they do not know. The Centers for Disease and Control has offered safety tips specifically geared towards parents and children to prevent them from being bitten by dogs. Please share them with your kids. They are as follows: ▸▸ Do not approach an unfamiliar dog. ▸▸ Do not run from a dog or scream. ▸▸ Remain motionless when approached by an unfamiliar dog. ▸▸ If knocked over by a dog, roll into a ball and lie still. ▸▸ Do not play with a dog unless supervised by an adult. ▸▸ Immediately report stray dogs or dogs displaying unusual behavior. ▸▸ Avoid direct eye contact with a dog. ▸▸ Do not disturb a dog that is sleeping, eating, or caring for puppies. ▸▸ Do not pet a dog without allowing it to see and sniff you first. ▸▸ If bitten, immediately report the bite to the police and/or animal control .

cover story Dr. G’s Weight Loss & Wellness Opens in Plantation By Julie Levin

A

re you looking to lose weight, and keep it off? Then make sure you check out Dr. G’s Weight Loss & Wellness, which recently opened its first franchise inside the Contour Day Spa in Plantation. Dr. Charles Goldsmith, who practices obstetrics & gynecology in Miami, founded Dr. G’s Weight Loss & Wellness in 1994 after realizing that his patients were having trouble losing weight after delivering their children. To help these busy mothers return to their desired weight, he designed a doctor supervised prescription medication program, centered on the individual. Joe & Valery Adkins, of West Pembroke Pines, purchased the first three franchises. After having three children, Valery met Dr. Goldsmith as a patient and to date she has lost 43 lbs. The Adkins family was so impressed with the results that they jumped at the opportunity to become franchise owners. Their second location will be opening soon in the Sheridan Plaza in Hollywood, and their third location will open at a later date near the Sawgrass Mills Mall. The Contour Day Spa has worked out to be the perfect location for their first office. The spa’s owner, Fanit Panofsky, welcomed Dr. G’s Weight Loss & Wellness with open arms. It’s a very symbiotic relationship targeting many of the same customers who are concerned about their health and appearance. People coming to the spa, who are concerned with their wellness, love the convenience of being able to walk upstairs for their weight loss needs. They are a one stop shop for hair treatments, manicures, pedicures, weight loss and supplements to keep you looking good and feeling great! The combination of Contour Day Spa and Dr. G’s Weight Loss makes for the perfect wellness experience. Dr. G’s Weight Loss & Wellness program incorporates a comprehensive medical evaluation with prescription and herbal compounds along with supplements that suppress dieters’ appetites, curb anxiety and boost their metabolism. The treatment plans are customized using blood work, EKG results, metabolic rate, body composition and behavioral history as guiding tools. Then the clients are encouraged to follow a customized meal plan and exercise regimen. Typical results are approximately 8-10 lbs per month. Their patients visit once a month to weight in, visit the in house doctor and consult with the wellness coach. These visits are all included in the program. The program works by creating behavior modifications. If you take the prescribed medication and follow the plan guidelines, you will find your stomach shrinking and you will not get past half your meal. The program curbs your appetite and gives you that feeling of being full. Our protein bars and shakes can be used as meal replacements during the day for those who live a busy lifestyle. We sell a full line of herbal supple-

Dr. G’s Weight Loss & Wellness also performs in-house teeth whitening by DaVinci, an all organic teeth whitening system. How is it different? Have you ever been to the dentist for a teeth whitening and left with a painful sensitivity on your teeth? That’s because many times they are using a gel with a preservative in it. Gels with preservatives are not meant to be used with an accelerator light. DaVinci gel has no preservatives and takes only 15 minutes per session under their accelerator light. They recommend two, 15 minute sessions for the best whitening results.. Call to schedule an appointment during your lunch break. To compliment your new slender figure and sparkling white teeth, they also sell a full line of RevitaLash products. RevitaLash was created by a doctor whose wife was going through chemotherapy and experiencing hair loss. RevitaLash was created specifically to grow back eye lashes, eye brows and the hairs on your head. It is the only hair growth product that proudly displays the Breast Cancer pink ribbon seal of approval and part of the proceeds go to breast cancer research. school news Tropical Elementary School Celebrates 40th Anniversary! By Julie Levin

T

ropical Elementary School threw itself a birthday party to remember recently. The school, located at 1500 SW 66 Avenue, had plenty to celebrate in honor of its 40th anniversary. The school originally opened during the 1970-71 school year and has been a mainstay in Plantation ever since, even though it has grown. “It is still very much a neighborhood school,” said Debbie Hysell, a 5th grade teacher & the school’s Student Council advisor To help mark four decades of services, Tropical Elementary held a week-long series of birthday events between April 25-29. “We usually do a Family Fun Night once a year, but this year we decided to turn it into one big birthday party all week long,” said Hysell. The week started with birthday presents for the students; each one of the 930 students received tags with the Tropical Elementary School name and logo. There were pep rallies, a talent show, performances of the school song, a “Pinwheels for Peace” parade, and even a wardrobe blast from the past. Students and staff members were encouraged to wear tie-dye t-shirts and other 70s style clothing. Principal Erik Anderson got into the spirit by dressing up as 70’s TV. dad Mike Brady, while Assistant Principal Joyce Krzemienski did her best Carol Brady impression.

Later in the week, Tropical welcomed back over 200 alumni, past staff members, school district and city of Plantation officials and families of students to an event called “Refreshments and Reminiscing.” Tours of the school were given and Tropical pioneers who impacted the school in its early years were recognized. “The whole atmosphere of the school has not changed. Families are here today whose kids went here years ago. We have high school kids who have gone back to visit their old teachers. It is fabulous,” said Hysell. The week ended with a huge “birthday bash” that included a family fun day carnival, a display of student artwork, a dunk tank with staff members in the hot seat, barbecue foods, the Plantation fire department and spin art. The school’s art club took old bottles, recycled them, painted them and created colorful sunflowers out of them that many of the guests took home. There was also a section set-up in the cafeteria called “memory lane” where guests had a chance to look back through old photos and yearbooks. Myra Villalona has already sent two children to Tropical Elementary School, and has a third on the way. She says she wouldn’t send her kids anywhere else. “It is really a great school. We love it here,” she said.

A Celebration of Reading! By Julie Levin

H

oping to instill a lifelong love of reading into her students, Julie Gittelman recently gave her students a page-turner of a surprise. Gittelman, the Principal at Plantation Park Elementary School, held her annual Principal’s Reading Challenge Celebration April 29, and with it, brought in some special guest readers. “We do this every year and the kids get very excited about it,” said Gittelman, who lives in Davie. This year, the 514 students at the school, located at 875 SW 54 Avenue, got to hear stories read to them by star readers that included Plantation Mayor Diane Veltri Bendekovic, former Miami Dolphin player Sean Hill, Florida Gator football player Tevin Westbrook, Seminole Middle School Principal Kathy Marlow and cartoon character “Clifford the Big Red Dog”. The event was the pay-off to this year’s Principal’s Reading Challenge, which challenges the students in every grade to reach individual and class level goals. This year’s theme was “Read, Learn, Serve”, part of the school’s larger, yearround campaign of “A Time for Action” which encourages a commitment to the Principal Julie Gittelman with guest readers community and the country. As part of Sean Hill (l)and Tevin Westbrook (r) that commitment, the school also col-

lected 14 boxes of new and gently used books that were donated to Plantation General Hospital, where many of the Plantation Park students were born. Barnes and Noble, the school’s business partner, contributed 100 books for the drive and the top reader from each grade had the honor of helping to deliver the books May 18. The students were expected to tour the facility and read to children who are patients. It was a vital lesson, learned out of the classroom. “They get a true appreciation for helping others,” said Gittelman. As part of their “Time for Action” campaign, the students also donated money to Cap for Kids, to help children battling cancer. The students were asked to raise money for the privilege of wearing a cap for a day. The students also helped with the annual Harvest Drive, which helps feed hundreds of families around Thanksgiving, and sent “Hearts for Heroes” valentines to men and women serving overseas. If the students also met their individual reading goals, they were also going to be treated to a McDonalds night in May where they were Star Readers! hat artist doesn’t like to exhibit his or her work? The after-school art class at South Plantation High School is no exception. The students, most of them deaf or hard of hearing, recently had the chance to show the public their work at a two-month long exhibit at the Tamarac Community Center. “They have created something they can point to and say ‘hey, I did that,” said Dixie Lee Hedrington, a local artist who runs the class. For the past few months, Hedrington has been

working with close to 35 kids at the Plantation school, which is cluster for the deaf and hard of hearing. Some of the projects involved her passion; the technique of working with acrylic on canvas, sometimes using a palette knife to achieve a different effect. Because many of the students were also set to also take a cooking class, Hedrington also had them work on an apron project. “Everybody created their own design right on the apron,” she said. They also made flower pots, taking advantage of the school’s strong agriculture program. Over the summer, they plan on getting to work on 5 projects, including the design and decor of bird houses. A class of artists! The class serves a dual purpose for Hedrington, a self-taught artist who starting painting in the 1990’s and recently self-published a book called “A Journey into My World of Art.” It not only indulges her love of art, but An "Island of Beauty" as seen by Joseph Rutledge. also gives her time to share her skill with son

Brandon, who is deaf and a member of the class. Some of her other students face other challenges, and some are economically disadvantaged. She says the class is essential because it comes at a time when art budgets everywhere are being cut. “Programs like these are like jewels for them,” she said.

You’re Hired? Students Work on Entrepreneurial Skills By Julie Levin

S

econd grade students at Temple Kol Ami Emanu-El Day School in Plantation learned about what it takes to be an entrepreneur as they created their own business plans, put together a visual display of their ideas and visited local businesses including Whole Foods, Bank of America and Publix for behind the scenes tours to learn how these real businesses operate. Students learn all the aspects of economics through this project said Principal Tony Weissberg. “They learn about what it takes to run a business including how and what to advertise, how to hire and train employees and how to make the business profitable,” said Weissberg. “We’ve done this unit for many years at the school but this year the projects were the most creative we’ve ever seen.” Second grader Ian Cahen came up with the idea for Ian’s Café and Books, a combination library and café where customers can browse the book shelves and enjoy some nice food. “I originally thought of creating a toy store but then I changed my mind because I wanted to do something different,” Cahen said. “I learned it takes a lot of time and a lot of work to put together and run a business,” he added. Classmate Jared Sanders created a Chinese

Restaurant called Jared’s Great Wall of China because he likes Chinese food. Sanders, who proudly showed off his name written in Chinese over the restaurants front doors, said his restaurant is special because in addition to having the best Chinese food you will ever eat, he intends to teach Chinese to children at his business. Sanders knows a little about what it’s like to own a business as his father owns his own insurance business. Students fielded questions from their classmates about their businesses during class presentations and then their displays were set up in a special hallway called the “Mall for All”, a name the students chose themselves in a Name the Mall contest. Second grade teachers Nancy Friedlander, Bari Becker and Esther Meyer said the parents have fun deciding which stores they want to shop in. “Every year the businesses change a little to reflect the times,” Friedlander said. “For example, this year one of the businesses was a Justin Bieber store.” Both Sanders and Cahen said they might want to open the businesses they created one day although Cahen said he thinks he might want to be an inventor and Sanders said he wants to be President of the United States.

Protect Yourself from Skin Cancer

Mail or email to:

Plantation Town Times 17120 Royal Palm Blvd., Suite 1 Weston, FL 33326

By Dr. Wendy S. Levenson EdD, RN

S

kin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. According to current estimates 40 to 50 percent of Americans who live to age 65 will have skin cancer at least once. That’s more than cancers of the prostate, breast, lung, colon, uterus, ovaries, and pancreas combined.

The good news is that a lot can be done to prevent skin cancer from occurring. Even if you have spent a lot of time in the sun or developed skin cancer, it’s never too late to begin protecting your skin. There are several ways to prevent skin cancer. These include: ▸▸ Avoid unnecessary sun exposure, especially between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun’s rays are the strongest. Watch your shadow, if it is short the sun’s rays are very strong, seek the shade.

email: editor@plantationtowntimes.com Please send hi-resolution original digital photos as attachment only. Include name, address, phone number and where photo was taken. Sorry, photo cannot be returned.

Got news?

▸▸ Avoid deliberate tanning. Lying in the sun, using a tanning bed or sunlamp may give you a lovely bronzed body today however you are also exposing yourself to premature aging, wrinkles, and sagging skin as well as an increased chance for developing skin cancer. The sun’s UV rays have also been associated with immunosuppresion, a weakening of the body’s ability to protect itself from cancer and other diseases. In addition cataracts and macular degeneration have also been associated with the suns UV rays. An alternative might be a sunless self-tanning product. ▸▸ Use extra caution near water, sand and concrete as they reflect the damaging rays of the sun and increase your chance of sunburn. ▸▸ Wear protective clothing. A long-sleeved shirt, pants, a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses. The tighter the weave of the clothing the more sun protection is provided. Clothing is available that has been specifically designed to protect against the sun. Laundry additives are also available to enhance the protective function of clothing. ▸▸ Get vitamin D safely through a healthy diet not by sun seeking. ▸▸ Use sunscreen generously. Apply 2 tablespoons of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or excessive sweating. Sunscreen should have a skin protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher as well as one that protects against UVA and UVB rays. Apply sunscreen to all exposed areas of your body remember your lips, tops of ears, head, back of your neck and hands and feet. Keep in mind though that sunscreen does not make sunbathing safe. ▸▸ Examine your skin head-to-toe every month. Skin Cancer warning signs include a change in a wart or mole, and a sore that does not heal. Early detection includes an annual physical examination, monthly self examination of the skin, and paying particular attention to moles, warts, and birthmarks.

Health & Wellness Basic Back-Saving Tips By Dr. Browner & Dr. Behar

M

ake no mistake: back pain is epidemic in our society. The human and financial costs are staggering and getting worse. Yet most cases of back pain are easily preventable. The following are ten basic back-saving tips to help keep you from becoming another member of the growing back disability club: 1.  Lift with your legs, not your back. Remember: “legs lift, backs break!” 2.  When returning to upright posture, first bend your knees. 3.  Rest one foot on a footstool when standing for long periods of time. 4. Sleep on your side or back, not your stomach. 5. When lifting or carrying, keep your shoulders, feet and hips facing forward. 6. Listen to your body. Respect the signals it sends you. Know your limits. 7. Push, don’t pull. You have twice as much power and less chance of injury. 8. Develop a regular exercise program to keep your back flexible, strong and aerobically fit. 9. At all times, strive for good posture. Think TALL! 10. Remember: Preventative spinal care begins with regular chiropractic check-ups. Minor alignment or movement problems of the spine can be “silent” for a long time before any pain is felt. Detecting and correcting these problems early can avoid unnecessary pain and expense later, and keep small problems from becoming BIG! An ounce of prevention is worth a lot more than a pound of cure. For a consultation or more information you can reach Dr. Browner and Dr. Behar at Windmill Health Center in Weston at (954) 217-4881. We also have two additional locations to serve you in Pembroke Pines and Plantation. Contact our Weston location for more information.

legally speaking How to Avoid Deficiency Judgments after Foreclosure and Short Sale By Omar J. Arcia, Esq., Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

A

s terrible as it may seem to lose your home through a foreclosure, most people believe that after the foreclosure, their biggest financial headache is behind them. However, former homeowners may still be on the hook if there’s a difference between what they owed on the mortgage and what the bank sold the house at the foreclosure auction. This is called a “deficiency judgment.” Deficiency judgments are ticking time bombs that can explode years after borrowers lose their homes. A lender also has the right to seek a deficiency judgment against homeowners who convinced their bank to approve a short sale and even in cases where the bank takes back the property through a deed in lieu of foreclosure. Releasing title to the bank does not always wipe out the debt. A mortgage has two parts: a pledge of collateral (represented by the home), and a promise to pay the loan under the promissory note. Lenders may release property liens to facilitate short sales without releasing borrowers from their obligations to pay. Lenders or collection agencies may wait until debtors have recovered financially before seeking a deficiency judgment. In Florida, the bank can wait up to 5 years to seek a deficiency judgment. Once the court grants a deficiency judgment, the lender has 20 years to collect it! Moreover, the lender can request your financial records, garnish your wages, repossess your vehicles, and even freeze your bank accounts. In order to short-circuit lenders’ attempts to seek a deficiency judgment in the future, it is imperative that after the home is sold at foreclosure auction, the former homeowner immediately file for bankruptcy protection. Since the deficiency judgment would be considered an unsecured debt, it will be forever discharged through the bankruptcy proceeding and the bank could never collect it. In “short sale” or deed in lieu scenarios, most lenders are willing to release the deficiency judgment amount. However, many borrowers may not be aware that they have to ask for such a release. If you are pursuing a short sale or a deed in lieu of foreclosure, be sure to ask the bank to release you from any further obligation or deficiency under the mortgage. If the bank refuses, bankruptcy proceedings can also avoid any liability after a short sale or return of your property to the bank through a deed in lieu. A more detailed explanation of the different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, or at risk of foreclosure, and key foreclosure defense strategies are discussed in a new instructional DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight for Your Home,” which is available in English and Spanish. Contact the Arcia Law Firm today and mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine to receive a FREE copy of this DVD (which retails for $39.95 plus S/H). it’s their business Protect Your Roof with Roof-A-Cide By Julie Levin

W

ith South Florida’s intense heat, humidity and heavy rains, keeping your roof clean is a never ending challenge. Violation notices from property owners’ associations or from the city for the ugly black streaks and dirty appearance of your roof can be a headache. In addition to these two issues, the pressure of locating a reputable company with competitive prices and speedy results will certainly add to the stress of maintaining your very own home sweet home. However, at Roof Treatment Inc., their goal is to provide customers with exactly the kind of quality service discerning homeowners expect. Located locally in Davie, this family owned and operated business is licensed and insured, and has serving south Florida for over ten years. “We have the best product on the market. We preserve roofs, we don’t destroy roofs!” said Christina Miele, who co-owns Roof Treatment Inc. with brother, Frank Miele. Roof Treatment Inc. is actually one of a few companies in the South Florida area that uses a patented product called Roof-A-Cide. Effective on all types of roofs, this innovative chemical is a 100% copper-based material that is the only EPA approved algaecide / fungicide on the market. Not only is it gentle on your roof, but it is safe for

The Oak Ridge community roof "before" using Roof-A-Cide.

The Oak Ridge Community roof "after" the Roof-A-Cide application.

plants and shrubs as well. Christina states that it is the most effective alternative to repetitive roof cleaning, which has been known to cause premature damage. “There’s no chlorine, bleach, or harsh chemicals to deteriorate the roof.” Traditional cleaning typically involves chlorine bleach or pressure cleaning, both of which have been known to cause unnecessary and sometimes extensive damage to the roof and surrounding property. These methods also yield minimal results that typically last a mere 6-12 months. Roof-A-Cide, however, is guaranteed to last two years. Each customer receives a two year warranty backed by the applicator and manufacturer. Less cleaning, and less people walking on your roof means greater durability. A properly cared for roof could last up to 25-30 years, even though many homeowners in Florida are forced to replace their roofs after only 12-15 years because of the damage caused by repeated cleaning. Roof Treatment Inc. begins the roof cleaning process on most roofs with a product known as “Roof Restore”, a detergent which is sprayed on and then removed with a low pressure hose. “We have developed a product that will remove the mold and mildew and bring it to the surface of the asphalt shingles and stone coat steel,” states Frank Miele. After this thorough cleaning, trained technicians apply the Roof-A-Cide

34

June 2011

product, which functions as a guard against black mold on all types of roofs, including asphalt shingle, stone coat steal, tile, barrel tile or clay. “It adheres to all types of roof material” Christina says Roof-A-Cide is a safe and effective method that permanently eradicates mold, unlike chlorine. Chlorine initially gets rid of the mold, but once the gas from the chlorine evaporates, it leaves behind a residue that becomes fertilizer for the next colony of Frank and Christina Miele, the comold to grow. It becomes an accelerator. owners of Roof Treatment, Inc. Consequently, repeated cleaning is needed much sooner. The natural erosion that occurs over time from the basic weather conditions is enough to bring most roofs to the point where annual inspections and minor repairs are a necessity to prevent significant repair costs. Along with repeated cleaning, concrete tiles are more likely to shift, slip, or break and asphalt shingles are more likely to become brittle and crack. As these factors take their toll on the roof, there becomes a greater chance of damaging the roof simply by walking on it, or even worse, the roof becomes so compromised it caves under even minimal stress. Roof-A-Cide eliminates the need for repeated and unnecessary pressure cleanings. It will be the last time you clean your roof,” Frank said. Roof-A-Cide comes with an unconditional 2-year guarantee. Once your roof is cleaned, authorized applicators will treat your roof with Roof-A-Cide and will guarantee discoloration for two years. Roof Treatment Inc, is currently offering a Summer Special through August. Mention this article to receive the promotional summer discount. Frank Miele said he is willing offer the discount because Roof-A-Cide is beneficial to not only the client, but his company as well. When technicians return in two years, the roof does not need to be re-cleaned, just re-treated. “All we have to do is come back and give the roof a light spray every two years. It takes less time because we don’t have to clean it again,” he said. “And of course, It will expand the life of your roof because you don’t have people walking on it every year, and you don’t have water pressure or harsh chemicals beating it down,” he said. Something else to keep in mind, with water conservation becoming a rising concern, one Roof-A-Cide application takes about 30 gallons of water, equal to a 5 minutes shower, per two years in comparison to 1,000+ gallons of water needed to pressure clean per year on an average 3000 square foot roof to achieve the same results. This along with EPA registration makes it an easy decision for homeowners to go green without paying too much green. For more information, you can call Roof Treatment Inc at 954-275-1831 or visit them at 2045 SW 127th Avenue in Davie. You can also check out the exclusive Roof-A-Cide product at www.roofacide.com.

Today, gifted orthodontics specialists shape dazzling smiles creating optimal form and function. Orthodontics has come a long way in just a few thousand years. Children, teenagers, young adults, middle-aged men and women, seniors –all are taking advantage of the simplicity that distinguishes today’s orthodontics. There are orthodontic solutions for every lifestyle and budget. Fees for orthodontic care vary with the complexity of the treatment and may vary according to geographic region. Ask you orthodontist about anticipated treatment fees, payment options and insurance benefits. Orthodontics is devoted to building beautiful smiles by bringing teeth, lips, and jaws into proper alignment. Straight teeth function better, are easier to clean, and more likely to last your lifetime. Your orthodontist can improve most tooth and jaw alignment problems at any age. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children see an orthodontist no later than age seven. Norena Orthodontics is located in the northeast corner of Sunrise Blvd and Nob Hill Road. Drs Felipe and Ana Maria Norena have a combined orthodontic experience of 35 years. Vienna Cafe Blackened Swordfish w/Crab & Tomato Salsa Ingredients ▸▸ Four 6 oz. pieces Swordfish (7/8 to 1 inch thick) ▸▸ 2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons vegetable oil ▸▸ 1/4 cup blackening season (Old Bay) ▸▸ 3 cups Crab and Tomato Salsa (recipe given)

Preparation Rinse the swordfish under cool running water and dry with well with paper towels. Brush both sides of each piece with about 1 teaspoon vegetable oil and coat all sides well with about 1½ teaspoon blackened seasoning per side. Heat a large ridged cast iron skillet over medium heat about 5 minutes or until very hot. Carefully place the swordfish pieces in the pan and cook 3 to 4 minutes a side or until nicely darkened and just cooked through. (To get an attractive crosshatch pattern, after about two minutes of cooking on one side, turn the pieces clockwise about 45 degrees. Finish cooking 1-2 minutes on that side before turning the fish over and repeating the process on the other side of each piece.) If you want to cook the fish in the oven, preheat it to 400 degrees. Place the prepared fish on a metal baking pan with sides and bake 8 to 10 minutes or until just cooked through.

dining out Vienna Café and Wine Bar Blends Classic and Contemporary Cuisine by stacey bomser

I

f you’re bored with burgers and fries or pizza and pasta, you need to try Vienna Café and Wine Bar. It’s anything but ordinary. From its quaint cottage setting to the artistically prepared culinary creations, every meal is memorable. Vienna Café and Wine Bar puts a contemporary twist on classical Northern European cuisine. Here, owner Per Jacobsen brings his favorite foods from his native land of Denmark to Davie. “Danish food is rooted in German and Austrian foods. They are similar in profile and ingredients,” he explains, noting that this type of cuisine focuses on fresh ingredients, as well as veal and seafood. Jacobsen, a classically-trained chef who has worked at some of the finest hotels, resorts and cruise lines in the world, opened the restaurant twelve years ago. For years he ran the kitchen while his wife, Linda, and daughter, Jody, took care of the service side. Today, he serves more as the maitre d’, greeting guests and arranging private parties, and has turned over his apron to Chef Courtney Burks. Always a chef at heart, Jacobsen works closely with Chef Courtney to create the

menu. “We change it twice a year to keep it fresh,” he notes. “Plus we offer daily lunch and dinner specials. There are always two local seafood dishes featured plus a meat special every day.” Of course, there are also several dishes that have become quite popular with patrons. These items have been on the Vienna Café and Wine Bar menu since the day it first opened. Guests will always find Wiener Schnitzel, a traditional veal dish with pan roasted potatoes, red cabbage, vegetables and pickled cucumber. The Frikadeller (Danish Meat Balls) is another classic. The pork, veal and beef meat balls are served with red cabbage, pan roasted potatoes and vegetables in a demi-glace sauce with pickled cucumber. The Roasted Duck features a crisp half duck, served with red cabbage, candied potatoes and bing cherry sauce. And the Twin Potato Crusted Fillet of Salmon is served in a pinot noir sauce with asparagus and carrots. Another specialty is Vienna Café’s signature Sonoma Salad. “We created this after tasting a similar salad during a visit to Sonoma, California,” explains Jacobsen. “We loved it so much that we decided to turn it into our own.” He changed the recipe a bit to include some of his favorite things. It features mescaline greens, raisins and walnuts tossed in a balsamic vinaigrette and topped with gorgonzola cheese and diced apples. Guests can add grilled chicken to make it a meal. Everything at Vienna Café and Wine Bar is prepared fresh and to taste. Guests can order their meal without salt, butter or oil. The restaurant can also accommodate those diners with special dietary restrictions including gluten-free. “Because we cook all food to order, it is easy to adapt our food to what people want or need,” says Jacobsen. While the restaurant offers a full menu, one of the best ways to truly experience

40

June 2011

Vienna Café and Wine Bar is with the Taste of Vienna dinner. Diners can enjoy this delicious three-course meal daily after 4:30pm. It features either soup or salad, choice of entrée from a special menu, plus dessert for $25. The restaurant also offers a weekday lunch special, half a sandwich with a cup of soup, for $8.50. Two homemade soups are offered each day, one cream-based and the other non-cream. The restaurant offers a variety of wines to accompany your meal. After all, the name is Vienna Café and Wine Bar. It features 160 wines, with 20 different wines available by the glass. “We offer wine tasting dinners on the second Tuesday of every month,” states Jacobsen. Plus, on Mondays and Tuesdays the restaurant offers half-priced wine bottles. Breakfast/brunch is served every weekend. Choices include the signature Vienna French Toast, banana pancakes, apple crepes, Eggs Benedict or Florentine, Spanish frittata and much more. There is surely something to please any palate. Vienna Café and Wine Bar features a private dining room which seats up to 30 people. It’s the perfect place to host a holiday party, bridal or baby shower, special celebration or other event. Guests can create a custom menu or enjoy the regular restaurant menu. Vienna Café and Wine Bar is located at 9100 State Road 84 in the Pine Island Plaza, between Nob Hill Road and Pine Island Road. Hours are Monday through Thursday from 11:30am until 9:00pm, Friday from 11:30am until 10:00pm, Saturday from 9:00am until 10:00pm, and Sunday from 9:00am until 9:00pm. Reservations are recommended; call (954) 423-1961 or visit www.viennacafeandwinebar.com. A copy of the menu is available online.
