Everglades, the Environmental Science and Everglades Restoration Magnet program at South Plantation High School which lets students study the Everglades and encourages them to be good stewards of the environment, and the Westside Regional Medical Center teen volunteer program, which gives students the opportunity to give back to the community while gaining experience in the medical career field. Founded in 1997 with General Colin Powell as Chairman and chaired today by Alma Powell, America’s Promise Alliance is a cross-sector partnership of 400+ corporations, nonprofits, faith-based organizations and advocacy groups that are passionate about improving lives and changing outcomes for children. The ING Foundation shares the Alliance’s passion to invest in the development and future of America’s young people. Each year on average, the ING Foundation contributes $3.5 million towards education initiatives. This year, more than 300 communities in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., were nominated for honor, with winners eventually being selected from 39 states. Past winners of the Best Communities competition have ranged from small towns, such as a mobile home community in Minnesota; to some of the nation’s largest cities, including New York City, Chicago and Houston; to counties and school districts. A grant of $2,500 will be given to every community that is named one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People. Other communities in Florida to receive the award included North Lauderdale, St. Petersburg, Tampa/Hillsborough, Manatee County, Greenacres and Alachua County.

long-standing Plantation holiday tradition is ready to entertain guests, both young and old. Winter Wonderland, the annual exhibit featuring Christmas trees decorated in different themes, is once again on display at the Plantation Historical Museum. “We have 41 trees this year, from 2 feet to 14 feet tall,” said Shirley Schuler, the Curator of the Museum. As many as 6,000 people are expected to visit the exhibit, which opened December 1 and will be on display through January 7. In addition to the beautifully decorated trees, there will also be cultural holiday displays, a Hanukkah exhibit, Victorian doll house, porcelain village with miniature train, and animated & musical figures. The tradition began in the 1980’s with a Christmas in July event, which featured what was then called the “Constitution Tree” and Schuler says it just kept growing. “People The Victorian Tree. kept giving us ideas for trees, and would help us purchase them,” she said. The exhibit is set up by a team of “Angels and Elves”. Schuler says the Angels “adopt” trees and help decorate them. Elves are volunteers from the community that not only help decorate, but also serve as guides during the exhibit and help explain each tree. Some of trees on display include the old fashioned tree, a Victorian tree, a Disney tree, the transportation tree, which has a small train that runs through the center of it, the Plantation tree with snapshots of residents and employees, a dinosaur tree with an animated dinosaur at the bottom, and many more. “It is really a beautiful exhibit to

One of the best known bands of the 70’s and 80’s, along with the lead singer of one of the most acclaimed bands of the classic rock era, will be coming to our area for a benefit concert. Three members of the Little River Band, along with Bad Company’s lead singer Brian Howe, are set to perform at the Hawks Landing Clubhouse in Plantation January 14, to help raise money for at-risk dogs. The concert is being presented by Have a Heart, Inc., a non-profit volunteer canine rescue in South Florida. All funds raised through the concert will go towards keeping the dogs safe and healthy. Organizers are expecting up to 250 people for the show, that could raise anywhere from $10,000- $15,000 for Have a Heart. For music lovers, it will be a chance to get “Unplugged, Up Close and Personal” with the legendary musicians. The Little River Band came out of Australia in the 1970’s and quickly set a record for having top 10 hits for 6 consecutive years, with songs like Reminiscing, Lonesome Loser, Lady, Night Owls, Happy Anniversary, Take It Easy Brian Howe On Me, and Cool Change. Brian Howe started his career in 1983 as lead vocalist for Ted Nugent, before joining Bad Company as lead singer in 1983. They gathered November 3 at A Nose for Clothes in Plantation to help raise money for the fight against Breast Cancer. “Every year we try to do something during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and to do something for charity,” said Debi Katz, the Manager at A Nose for Clothes, located at 835 North Nob Hill Road. The woman came together for an evening of appetizers, refreshments and a chance to shop. 10% of all proceeds went to the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. In addition, guests had a chance to buy raffle tickets with prizes from more than 30 local businesses. The proceeds from the raffle, close to $300, were donated to Jackie’s Striders, a walk team organized by Breast Cancer survivor Jackie Goodman. The 3-hour shopping and networking extravaganza came together in just a few weeks time. It was organized by Katz, and Plantation resident Patty Kopelman. who is a close friend of Jackie Goodman. They brought in nearby business Pink and Blues, and asked owner Lisa Milgroom to get the message out to her customers. Kopelman says word spread quickly in the community. “There is nothing women can’t do when they network and support a cause together. It is so nice to see our local Plantation stores like A Nose For Clothes and Pink and Blues coming together to support community fundraising like the American Cancer Society, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer,” said Kopelman.

Organizers are hoping to do the event again next year, bit is not too late to help this year. Donations are still being collected through December. Mosaic Theatre Puts Spotlight on the Arts in Plantation By Julie Levin

Simon says he loves working in the school’s Black Box theatre which can be configured to match the needs of almost any production, and seats 130 viewers. “It is so intimate it really allows a chance for the audience and artists to mingle,” he said. Next up for the Mosaic Theatre, the Southeastern Premiere of “The Birds” by Tony Award nominee Conor Executive & Artistic Director Richard Jay Simon. McPherson. This new play is a chilling psychological portrait inspired by Daphne Du Maurier’s short story, on which Hitchcock’s famed thriller was also loosely based. The show will run from March 8-April 1. That will be followed April 19-May 13 by the World Premiere of “The Michael Brewer Project”, a production made possible by Funding Arts Broward/Knight New Work Award. Loosely based on actual events of 2009 when a 15 year old boy was doused with rubbing alcohol and set on fire by five teenagers, the story is intended to deliver both a provocative and inspiring message.

e walk them - run and play with them - and are entertained by the occasional game of “fetch.” When we have a bad day, we are greeted with unconditional affection, tail wagging and eyes reflecting undying loyalty. Man’s best friend comes in all shapes and sizes – Chihuahuas to Great Danes. Regardless of the breed, Florida law holds dog owners strictly liable in the event of a dog bite. This makes it easy to maintain an injury claim arising out of a dog bite and, as such, dog owners need to protect themselves. Dogs bite approximately 4.5 million Americans every year with children being the victims of the most serious attacks. Due to the fact that a dog owner’s relatives, friends or neighbors are the most likely victims of a dog attack, having insurance to cover such a loss means protecting the people who are closest to the dog owner. Insurance for dog bites not only protects your personal finances, it may help to preserve valuable relationships and ensure proper treatment for loved ones. B e c au s e of Florida’s strict liability standards for dog owners, many homeowners’ insurance policies do not cover injuries caused by dog bites. No dog owner should purchase a homeowner’s insurance policy or renter’s insurance policy that excludes canineinflicted injuries unless he/she buys a supplemental policy that covers such a loss. Additionally, every dog owner needs to examine his/her homeowner’s insurance policy or renter’s insurance policy to confirm coverage. It is a good idea to maintain insurance policy limits of at least $100,000 for personal liability and $300,000 if you own a medium sized to large dog. To be absolutely sure that dog bites and other canine-related injuries are not excluded from your homeowner’s insurance policy, you can review the policy language itself. Most likely there will be a section in the policy entitled “Personal Liability” which will itemize all “exclusions.” Read that section of your policy carefully to determine if there are exemptions for injuries inflicted by dogs and/or animals in general. To determine the limits under the policy, review the policy’s “declarations” that lists the names of the insureds, the types of coverage that apply and are included, the cost, and the limits. Finally, inspect all “riders” and amendments to the policy that may be in place that further exclude coverage. Instead of doing this yourself, you can always contact your insurance agent or an attorney to help you with a policy review. It should be noted that other types of insurance may afford protection to dog owners and/or dog bite victims under certain circumstances. We experienced these unforgettable moments directly from the patio of our lodge, which overlooked a water hole frequented by every wild animal imaginable! Every morning, and again in the evening, we boarded an open Jeep with our knowledgeable and highly qualified ranger, Gerard. It is hard to describe the feeling of not knowing what you will encounter around the next bend, in terrain left untouched since the beginning of time. While we enjoyed our adult safari adventures, the children were safely back at the lodge participating in a wonderful, educational children’s camp program. They even enjoyed a mini-safari of their own. At sunset, our ranger would select a stop and magically arrange a table fit for royalty. We were refreshed with sun downers of every choice accompanied by the finest hot and

cold appetizers. This we enjoyed with the sound of the wild in our ears and a spectacular sunset as a backdrop! Each adventure was more magnificent than one could imagine. At different intervals we came within yards of the wild: a lioness and her two teenage cubs, a solitary dominant male lion, three baby cubs waiting for their mother to return with food, a herd of elephants, and a leopard lounging in a tree above our heads. We saw almost every species imaginable including rhinoceros, warthogs, wildebeest, zebras, impalas, kudus, and hundreds of species of birds. Amazing is the only way to describe it. Having enjoyed many adventures at game lodges over the years, we can honestly tell you that TAU Game Lodge is our absolute favorite! With the call of the wild now behind us, we flew SAA to the glorious city of Cape Town. Surrounded by massive mountain ranges with huge cliffs falling into the sapphire ocean, its sheer beauty makes it hard to catch one’s breath. By cable car we ascended Table Mountain, and were awestruck by the vastness and beauty as we looked out where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet at the tip of the African continent. We booked our accommodations through Go2Africa, under the direction of Kerry de Kock, who rents luxury homes in Cape Town and the surrounding areas. Our estate was located at the base of the Twelve Apostles, part of the Table Mountain range, in Camps Bay. Traveling as a group was our good fortune, resulting in a super-luxurious, five suite accommodation costing only $44 per person, per day! The private villa enabled us to each have our own suite as we willingly shared the enormous entertainment areas, gourmet kitchen, heated pool and amenities. We were able to sightsee in the Cape Town area by hiring Roland Pickup Tourism Service. Our knowledgeable guides took us to Stellenbosch, where we went chocolate and wine tasting. Then, we went on to Franschoek, for shopping and dining, a tour of an ostrich farm, Hermanus for whale watching, Chapman’s Peak for awesome views, and Hout Bay for its sheer beauty. Nothing compares

with the spectacular scenery of the Cape Province. The beaches are dotted with huge boulders and exquisite landscaping. The food in South Africa is simply delicious. Everything is grown locally so you are eating the highest quality food available. We enjoyed fabulous fresh fruit and vegetables, succulent meat and chicken, and simply spectacular fish and shellfish. Our group voted the sushi the best we ever tasted. More than anything, the people of Cape Town are so welcoming and genuine. The locals are the consummate hosts towards anyone visiting their country. They truly go out of their way to be of service. Being south of the equator, South Africa has the opposite seasons as us. This is now their summer time, which is a wonderful time to visit.

South Africa should be on everyone’s bucket list. This trip was a dream come true. In our hearts we will treasure the beauty we saw and the new friends we made. our gastrointestinal system is a series of hollow organs joined in a long, twisting tube. It runs from your mouth to your anus and includes your esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines. Your liver, gallbladder and pancreas are also involved. Gastrointestinal complaints are one of the most common reasons individuals seek medical care. There are many types and the symptoms vary widely depending on the problem. Gastrointestinal problems commonly occur in older persons, but can afflict individuals of any age, regardless of ethnicity or gender.

Some examples of gastrointestinal problems include:

▸▸ Bloating, flatulence or belching. For most people, a better diet helps eliminate these problems. ▸▸ Lactose intolerance is caused by the body’s inability to properly digest significant amounts of lactose, which is the predominant sugar in milk. Common symptoms of lactose intolerance include diarrhea, nausea, cramps and bloating. These symptoms can occur between 30 minutes to two hours after eating or drinking something that contains lactose. ▸▸ Abdominal pain is another type of problem. Abdominal pain falls into two categories; constant abdominal pain and cramping. If your pain is recurring, decreasing your quality of life or causing you to lose weight, you should contact your physician. Abdominal pain can be a sign of a serious condition and should not be dismissed lightly. ▸▸ Gastroesophageal reflux disease is commonly known as heartburn. Many people suffering from heartburn describe it as a burning feeling in the chest. Other people experience the taste of acid in their neck or throat. These unpleasant symptoms can last upwards of two hours and can be worsened through food consumption. Gastroesophageal reflux disease can cause serious issues if left untreated. ▸▸ Ulcers are another form of gastrointestinal problems. An ulcer is caused when an area of the stomach or the duodenum has been destroyed by stomach acid and digestive juices. Most people suffering from ulcers complain of a tingling or hunger pain in their abdomen. This discomfort usually occurs between meals and has the ability to awaken individuals from sleep. Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite and reduction in weight are less common symptoms. ▸▸ The most serious GI problem is colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer affects the colon and rectum. It is the second most common form of cancer in the United States, with more than 158,000 diagnosed cases each year. ▸▸ Polyps are abnormal growths on the wall of the colon that may become cancerous over time. Regular screening is recommended to identify polyps at an early stage so they can be removed before they become cancerous. The American Cancer Society recommends an annual fecal occult blood test and a sigmoidoscopy every 3-5 years for all Americans over the age of 50. A colonoscopy is also recommended for individuals who pose a higher risk of colorectal cancer. An increased risk of colorectal cancer is due to previous cancer incidents, family history of cancer or a chronic digestive condition.

Some of these include higher principal balances, the length of time required to complete the loan modification process, the temporary nature of a loan modification, and the high rate of default after a modification. However, there are limited circumstances under which a loan modification can work.

The Property is the Borrower’s Principal Residence

Most lenders will only consider a loan modification of a borrower’s principal residence. The rationale behind this is that a borrower is more likely to make all payments under a loan modification agreement on their family home, as opposed to an investment property. Indeed, the underlying purpose of the Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP) enacted in February 2009 was to help homeowners stay in their home. If you are struggling to loan modify an investment property or second home, you need to consider other more viable options.

The Borrower Has Positive Equity or At Least Owes What the Property is Worth

As most borrowers are painfully aware, most loan modifications will not include a reduction of the amount you owe your lender, but may actually include an increase. Agreeing to a loan modification with a higher principal balance may place the homeowner so deep in debt that he/she may never “break even” or realize any profit from the sale of the home. For this reason, it is critical that a homeowner have some equity in the property they are seeking a loan modification, or at least owe close to what the property is worth.

The Mortgage Loan Does Not Contain Elements of Fraud or Other Violations of Law

A homeowner should never sign a loan modification agreement without at least investigating whether the loan contains elements of mortgage fraud or violations of law. In order to rule out the possibility of mortgage fraud, a homeowner should conduct a forensic audit of their home loan. Homeowners should stay away from online sites that sell inexpensive forensic audits, and even from law firms that offer to perform the audit themselves. ad breath, also called halitosis, could be from several reasons. Poor dental habits, including not brushing and flossing properly, could lead to an excessive build-up of plaque causing the bacteria to harbor in your mouth and cause bad odor. Another important reason for bad breath, is not cleaning your tongue properly every day. Tongue has several papillae and filaments which can cause a layer of plaque formation whenever you eat food and over time the odor causing bacteria will feed on that layer and cause bad breath. Some people have more of these filaments and papillae than others. Another cause of bad breath could be gum disease (periodontal disease). Periodontal disease can also cause a bad taste in your mouth. Gum disease is also caused by the build-up of plaque on the teeth. The bacteria cause the toxins to form in the mouth which irritate the gums. Other causes of bad breath could be bad fitting dentures and appliances, yeast infection of mouth and dental caries. Dry mouth is another significant cause of bad breath. Dry mouth could be a result of several medications or cancer therapy. Smoking tobacco is another big reason. The smoke tar can accumulate on the tongue causing bad breath. There are also some medical conditions that may cause halitosis. Gastro esophageal reflux, sinus infection, Tonsillitis, post nasal drip, diabetes, kidney and liver problems all could cause bad breath.

In the collaborative divorce model, couples can settle their divorce cases without going to court.

The collaborative process was created as an alternative to conventional divorce litigation, which often left families financially and emotionally devastated. It is a process for couples who want a civilized and respectful end to their marriage for the sake of all family members. Mutual respect is fundamental to the collaborative way. You may cease being spouses, but you don’t cease being worthy human beings. When respect is shown, discussions are likely to be more productive and an agreement reached more easily. If you and your spouse are contemplating divorce, but wish to control the divorce process and the outcome, want to avoid assessing blame, recognize the importance of future relationships, protect children from the harm litigation can inflict, and place high value on personal responsibility for handling conflict with integrity, then the collaborative divorce process may very well be for you. In collaborative divorce, settlement is the sole agenda. Each party is represented by independent, trained lawyers in the collaborative divorce process. The role of each collaborative lawyer is to provide legal advice and advocacy during the negotiation and to guide the client toward reasonable resolution. So if you are using a mouthwash with alcohol, it may freshen your breath for a short while, but it will cause dry mouth after which could lead to bad breath. ▸▸ If you eat foods with strong odor like onions and garlic, brushing and flossing right after and using an alcohol free mouthwash will certainly help in masking the odor. ▸▸ Quit smoking. Ask you physician how he/she can help. ▸▸ An apple a day not only keeps the doctor away, it has also known to keep bad breath away. Apples have cleansing properties and if you eat an apple after meals, it tends to clean your teeth to some extent. ▸▸ Last but not the least, if you have any medical problems causing the bad breath, you need to see your physician.

The Cosmetology Program is our most complete program. With this license, graduates can open their own business. They learn hair, nails, facials and make-up. We added a Barber Program which specializes in services exclusively for men, such as haircuts with scissors or clippers, shaving, and hair color. Students in our Nail Program learn how to do manis and pedis, as well as acrylic nails, the new gel polish techniques, and nail art. Our aesthetics students learn various facial and skin care treatments including body wraps and waxing. Our Massage Therapy program teaches all types of massage from Swedish to sports, pregnancy to infant, and reflexology to aromatherapy. As you can see, we offer an extensive menu of courses for all aspects of the cosmetology industry.

Do you offer job placement services? Absolutely! After graduation we help place our students in positions in salons, spas and franchise salons. In addition, we offer free, one-on-one consultations to students who want to open their own salon. I explain the laws and regulations in all areas of cosmetology, nail and skin care, salon services and massage therapy. We also provide the forms needed to open and operate a business. All at no additional cost. Do you offer financial aid? We offer financial aid to those who qualify for a Pell Grant and student loan. The application is free and we help with all the paperwork. ASM Beauty World Academy is also approved by U.S. Homeland Security to provide International Student Visa. What other services do you offer students? We offer Day Care to our students with children. It is provided by licensed and certified childcare specialists.

Do you offer salon services to the community? ASM Beauty World Academy is a technical school. Our more advanced students offer salon services to the public at very reasonable prices. All services are supervised by our instructors. We offer any of the services you would find at a salon or spa, typically at about half the price. This includes hair cuts, color, highlights, keratin hair treatments, extensions, all types of manicures and pedicures, waxing, facials, body treatments and massage. We use only professional products such as L’Oreal, Clairol, Alfaparf, Keramer and Saloon Inn. Do you offer services for children? We actually offer birthday party packages that are extremely popular. tax talk Year-End Tax Planning Tips ▸▸ Charitable Donations – Make charitable donations with appreciated stock owned more than one year. The fair market value is used to measure the donation, and there is no tax on the difference between your cost and the fair market value.

e are into the final month of the year. With that in mind, this is a good opportunity to review some tax planning strategies that may help reduce your potential tax burden come April 15th. Year-end tax planning takes on increased importance for anyone who has had a change in circumstance during the past year. Changes include a marriage or divorce, birth or death of a family member, acquisition or sale of a business, promotion or loss of a job, or any other major event. To simplify your year-end tax planning, I have compiled a list of tax-saving strategies for you to consider:

▸▸ Retirement Contributions – Make the maximum contribution to retirement arrangements whether employer sponsored or an IRA. This can range from $4,000 to $44,000 depending on the type of program. ▸▸ Medical Expenses – Medical expenses are deductible if they exceed a limitation based on adjusted gross income. You may want to schedule and pay for procedures this year to get the benefit of a 2011 medical deduction. Also included as medical expenses are transportation, medical insurance premiums, certain long-term care premiums, prescription drugs and certain medically prescribed programs such as weight-loss.

▸▸ Bonuses and Salaries – If your employer will defer the payment into January 2012, bonus and salary amounts will not be taxed on your return until next year. ▸▸ Stock and Bond Sales – Gains and losses are determined based on the trade date. For 2011, the last trading day is December 30th. You may want to consider not selling stock with gain until January to defer recognition. Likewise, sell those stocks with losses before the end of the year to reduce any other gains you may have. Don’t forget that currently only $3,000 of net losses from security transactions can be deducted. The balances of any loss will carry over to next year. You also need to be mindful of the length of time that you have held the investment.

▸▸ Tax Liability – Review your tax liability position and determine whether to reduce your payroll tax withholding or adjust any estimated tax payments. If you have not done so already, now is the time to schedule a tax-planning session with your professional tax preparer. Remember, you should always consult with your personal accountant before making any changes to your tax strategy. Todd R.
