Happy New Year!
A
s the holiday season comes to a close and
we return to our daily work routines, the Happy New Year toasts slowly fade away. We are trying to recover from all the festivities of the season, the get-togethers with friends and families and the holiday feasts. Now, we wonder what the new year has in store for us. While we are making resolutions to better ourselves, we should remember that the most important improvement to our daily lives is to spend more quality time with our family and friends. To enjoy each other’s company and companionship, to truly listen to each other’s concerns, and to offer understanding and a helping hand are resolutions all of us can achieve. Therefore, let me make one last toast to 2013: “Appreciate your family and friends!” Have a Happy New Year from all of us at Our City Weston and the Town Times magazines. Sincerely,
Sven Budzisch Publisher/Owner

It’s a Dogs Day Out at Doogie Palooza By Julie Levin
T
here aren’t too many places in South Florida where pets are
welcome. But at an annual event coming up later this month in Plantation, bringing your pet is almost an essential as there is almost as much for the dogs to do, as their owners. Thousands of pooches and their people are expected once again to turn out for the City’s annual dog-themed expo known as Doogie Palooza. “Every year we average about 2,300 people. It is always packed, rain or shine,” said Wes Lockard, the Special Events Coordinator for the city of Plantation. Doogie Palooza will be held January 26 at the Happy Trails Dog Park, located at 6600 S.W. 16 Street in Plantation. The yearly event is designed to provide plenty of information on canine-related products and services in the community, as well as being a great day outdoors with your pet. On hand for the five-hour event will be pet-friendly vendors providing information on everything dog owners need to know on health and wellness, grooming, pet care as well as booths run by rescue and adoption groups. There will be K-9 demonstrations by the Plantation Police Department, K-9 couture? The expo will offer a “best-dressed” contest
a Frisbee dog show, canine fashion show, agility track and social area. Don’t forget to have your dog dress for the day, as there will be a bestdressed contest. It is the 11th year the City has held a Doogie Palooza. Lockard said he believes it draws such a big crowd because it is one of just a few dog expos in the area. The venue is also a bonus. Happy Tails Park provides five acres A Frisbee dog show will be part of the dedicated to man’s best friend. entertainment at Doogie Palooza The park features three distinct activity areas: a leash free run and fun area for large dogs, an exercise area ideal for agility training and an area for smaller dogs. It is open to the public from 7:00 a.m. until dusk, seven days a week. Various canine events and activities are held throughout the year. Doogie Palooza will be held Saturday, January 26 at the Happy Trails Dog Park, located at 6600 S.W. 16 Street in Plantation, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dogs must be leashed in the vendor area. There will be a $1 entry fee to benefit a local animal rescue group. Dogs get in for free! For more information call 954-452-2510.
Plantation Author Pens New Series that Weaves Adventure and Romance By Julie Levin
D
uring a trip to Disney World not long ago, a ride in Epcot’s
Norway Pavilion sparked something out of the ordinary for Nancy J. Cohen. The longtime Plantation resident rode the Maelstrom ride which takes visitors through a mythological version of Norway’s Viking Days. She came away so inspired by the Norse Mythology that she’s penned a brand new book series that promises readers a different set of adventure. Late last year, she released “Warrior Prince”, her first book in a series she is calling the “Drift Lords”. Cohen says it is a paranormal romance that leads readers through adventure, myth, magic, as well as something to tug at the heart strings.”Romance that has a happy ending is uplifting, it should leave you with a smile on your face and put you in a good mood. It celebrates love and celebrates monogamous relationships. Magic gives the series the extra twist,” said Cohen, who has lived in Plantation for years with husband Richard and their two children. The “Warrior Prince” is Cohen’s 17th published title, all of which she loves setting in her home state of Florida. Her first series-the “Bad Hair Day” mystery series--features a hairdresser who solves crimes under the Florida sun. “Warrior Prince” is also
10 PLT ALL 0113.indd 10
based in Florida--in this case the Orlando area where it involves not only ancient prophecies and Norwegian myths, but sinister theme parks too. It is based around mythologist and Florida resident Nira Larsen, who is drawn into a new world where ancient myths come alive after she accepts a job as tour guide for a mysterious stranger. It is there she finds Zohar, the leader of the galactic warriors known as the Drift Lords, who must battle an ancient enemy that invades earth after a dimensional rift in the Bermuda Triangle. To give it a Florida twist, the invaders recruit sleeper agents at a fictional theme park called “Drift World.””People go into a theme park to have fun. But what if you go off guard and what if something is going on that people Author Nancy J. Cohen don’t know about?” said Cohen. The second book in the “Drift Lord” series “Warrior Rogue” will be released in April. Cohen is also putting the finishing touches on “Warrior Lord”, the third in the series. She’s also readying the 11th book in her Bad Hair Day mysteries. For more on all of Cohen’s books and where to find them, visit her website at http:// nancyjcohen.com.

Top Players and Beginners Test Their Skill at Annual Forrest Gump Table Tennis Tournament By Julie Levin
P
layers of all skill levels kept their eye on a small white
bouncing ball as one of the City’s most beloved sporting events returned to Plantation recently. Dozens of competitors turned out for the 12th Annual Forrest Gump Table Tennis Tournament December 1st at the Plantation Central Park Gymnasium. The tournament is a draw for not only casual players, but rated players as well because it is a non-sanctioned event that lets them play without affecting their ranking. “This is a different venue for them, because it is laid back, “ said Jack Takacs, a Facility Manager with the City of Plantation. 42 players took part in this year’s tournament, which was divided into a seven division/double elimination format. Trophies were awarded to the first and second place winners in all divisions and players in the rated divisions who placed also received
Christopher Baboolal of Hollywood took 2nd place in the Open category
gift certificates. The event got its start 12 years ago when City Managers set out to find a “theme night” for residents. Takacs said he had watched the Forrest Gump movie not long before, and immediately thought about a table tennis competition. 30 players showed up the first year and attendance has grown ever since. Christopher Baboolal is a rated competitor who has been playing the sport for more than 20 years. He took 2nd place in the Open Category and said he enjoys the Forrest Gump tournament for the less competitive atmosphere. “It’s just a nice environment. We have fun whenever we play,” he said. The competition marked the first at the table for Aliona Zinchenko of Plantation, who managed to take first place in the beginners category after only a week of practice.”My fiancé got the invitation and said let’s go try and win a trophy,” she said.
Dozens of people turned out for the 12th Annual Forrest Gump Table Tennis Tournament December 1st at Plantation Central Park Gymnasium.
Aliona Zinchenko of Plantation took first place in the “E” or beginners category.

Plantation Celebrates with Annual Parade By Julie Levin

ne of Plantation’s most loved holiday traditions once again
helped get the holidays rolling in our area. Residents and guests packed the parade route for the City of Plantation and the Greater Plantation Chamber of Commerce 45th Annual” It’s a Wonderful Life in Plantation” Holiday Parade, sponsored by The Fountains. Thousands of people lined the parade route November 17 to cheer on their family, friends and neighbors who took part in the parade aboard floats, in cars, in marching bands, or even on foot There were representatives from many walks of life in Plantation, including City leaders, businesses, civic groups, educational facilities and more. First started more than four decades ago, Chamber organizers say the parade has become not only a wonderful holiday tradition, but also a way to support our local businesses. As always, the parade ended with a visit from Santa Claus, who made his way to The Fountains to the delight of children and their families.

Slender Fit U Makes Dieting Easy
S
By Debby Teich
lender Fit U is helping clients turn their
bodies into fat burning machines. They are losing 1/2 to 2 pounds of fat per day without exercise, diet pills or packaged foods and keeping it off. The medically supervised program helps dieters modify their relationship with food and eating, resulting in an easily maintained, long-term weight loss. It is the last diet they will ever need to do.
Geri Kelleher, Owner and Program Director, answered some commonly asked questions about the program.
Why do people call you the “HCG Guru”?
I was one of the first people in South Florida to start using the real scientifically proven HCG diet. Six years ago, I lost 25 lbs. on the diet and it changed my life. For the past five years, I have helped thousands of people achieve their Geri Kelleher, Owner weight loss goals with and Program Director this program. The best part of my job is seeing people change before your eyes and watching them get their confidence back. How much can clients expect to lose with the Slender Fit U program? Patients can choose a 23-day program or a 46-day program. Women typically lose 15 lbs. in the 23-day program and up to 30 lbs. in the 46-day program. Men typically lose more - 20 to 25 lbs. in 23 days and 40 to 50 lbs. in 46 days. What is HCG and how does it result in rapid weight loss? HCG (Human Chronic Gonadotropin) is a complex amino-peptide protein that exists in every tissue of the human body, male and female, in miniscule amounts and is found in all living things. It is produced in very high levels during pregnancy. It almost completely controls the metabolic function through the hypothalamus throughout the pregnancy. In non-pregnant individuals, research suggests HCG similarly increases the metabolism. Is this a new diet? No. It has been used successfully for weight loss since 1953, when a British endocrinologist, Dr. A.T.W. Simeons, discovered its weight loss effects. What makes the diet so effective? Unlike other “diets,” this program reshapes and re-sculpts the body by releasing abnormal fat deposits. Every pound you lose is a pound of FAT, which is very different from losing a pound of weight. You are not losing muscle mass, or water. You also lose multiple inches and dress sizes and your shape changes. Do clients keep the weight off? I take great pride in the fact that 90% of Slender Fit U clients don’t regain any weight after successfully completing the program. After completing the Slender Fit U program successfully, you will have supported and
16 PLT ALL 0113.indd 16
rebalanced your metabolism. In addition to losing unwanted abnormal fat, you will modify your relationship with food and eating, resulting in easily maintained, long-term weight loss.
Before
After
Before
After
Are clients medically supervised? Yes. Every patient has a comprehensive physical with the medical doctor before starting the program, as well as one-on-one counseling throughout the program. This is included in the price. Does the diet involve exercise? Exercise is not required and does not improve your end result. It is a scientific program and it is the combination of the HCG and the low calorie diet that produces the weight/ fat loss. However, those who want to exercise while on the program can do so. Is the diet easy? To quote one of my clients, “Besides being the most effective diet I have ever gone on, this was the easiest diet I have ever been on. People like instant gratification. That’s what you get on this diet. Almost every morning when I got on the scale, my weight would be down. No long workouts, no agonizing hunger pains. That’s how great this diet is.”
What do you eat on the diet? You are
eating real food from the grocery store that includes protein, fruit and vegetables. There are no packaged meals. Because you are eating real food, it’s an easy transition onto stabilization and then regular eating and regular life. Is HCG more effective than losing weight with a just a low calorie diet? Following a traditional 500 calorie-a-day diet will leave you fatigued and irritable, and within a few days you will start to retain water due to being “protein deficient”. Without the HCG, you will lose both fat and muscle just as if you were on any “normal” diet. With Slender Fit U›s program, your goal is to lose stored fat, not just weight. Is HCG safe for both men and women? It is completely safe for both men and women. In fact HCG is used to treat male and female infertility in very large doses. HCG used for weight loss is a very tiny dose. Are there any side effects from the HCG? There are no side effects reported while using HCG for weight loss. The amount of HCG used in the diet protocol is a very tiny dose. Because it is a natural substance, this program is completely safe. Are patients hungry on the diet? Eighty percent of people experience no hunger on the Slender Fit U program. They find even very tiny servings to be completely satisfying. This is partly due to your hypothalamus adjusting your metabolic rate, but largely due to the amount of calories circulating in
your system from the fat being released. HCG dieters usually feel as though they are stuffing themselves in order to reach that 800 calorie limit! Can HCG be purchased over the counter? No. There is no such thing as homeopathic HCG. Real HCG cannot be purchased over the counter. The HCG comes in both an injectable and an oral form from the pharmacy. How does Slender Fit U’s program differ from similar programs? My clients tell me that the difference between Slender Fit U and other places is the way we treat people. We stay involved with all of our clients; you are not just a number. If you miss an appointment, we call you. We make sure that every person doing our program gets the proper guidance and support throughout the program and achieves their weight loss goals. Also, we don’t water down the HCG. We give it in the strongest dosage for weight loss and we also give injectable prescription B12.
Consultations are free and by appointment. For information and to see more before and after photos, visit www.SlenderFitU.com or call 954-423-1376.

She has been a member of the board of directors of Jewish Family Services of Broward County and served on the board of the David Posnack Hebrew Day School. “I feel strongly about giving back and setting an example for my kids and letting them realize that there are people not as fortunate as we are. It’s an obligation,” said the 25-year Plantation resident. Her efforts have garnered other honors, including the Federation’s Women’s Division’s June M. Gordon Award, the Hy and Belle Schlafer Leadership Award, and the Women’s Division Community Service Award.” Ivy met her husband Marvin on a mission to Israel and together, they and their three children try to live by the standard of Tikkun Olam-repairing the world. Recently, Feinstein led a year-long project to collect and distribute new or gently used business and casual clothes for people in need, an effort she hopes to turn into an annual event. “Helping others in the community is incredibly rewarding – and so is becoming more educated about the Jewish community in Broward and throughout the world,” she said.
Plantation resident was recently named
the recipient of a prestigious honor for her longtime volunteer efforts. The Jewish Federation of Broward County recently named Ivy Feinstein as a Kipnis-Wilson/Friedland Award Winner, an honor bestowed upon women who have set a high standard for philanthropy and volunteerism. For Feinstein, for whom volunteering was always a labor of love, the honor came as a surprise.”I felt like people do when they win an Academy Award. I was taken aback because it is such an honor,” she said Feinstein. Established in 2004, the award was named after Norma Kipnis-Wilson and Toby Friedland and is given to recipients throughout the nation who continue to make a difference in their own communities and across the globe. Much of Feinstein’s efforts have come through the Jewish Federation of Broward, which raises funds to support the work of 30 social and humanitarian agencies that help Jews in need in our own community, in Israel and around the world. Feinstein has been a member of the Federation’s board of directors and executive committee, and in addition to serving as Women’s Division board chair, she was also the division’s campaign chair, and Lion of Judah chair; Annual Campaign chair; a member of the National

Florida in 1968, they moved for job opportunities, the weather and Plantation’s then rural atmosphere. It would have been hard to imagine back then that more than 40 years later, Helen would be honored for her ongoing commitment to the city. “I never planned to be a pioneer,” laughed Helen.”We just loved Plantation.”

Ackerman was one of 29 residents honored as Broward County Pioneers recently. The group joined a distinguished group of more than 2,000 Pioneers honored over the past four decades for their dedication and growth to the county by the Broward County Historical Commission. The event was held October 12 at the historic Oakland Park Elementary School, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the oldest operating school in Broward County. “I was very excited and very proud,” said Ackerman. “It was quite nice.” Ackerman was nominated for the honor by the Plantation Historical Society. “She has done so much for the city while she has been here,” said Shirley Schuler, Curator of the Plantation Historical Museum. “It’s an honor for not only people who have lived here for awhile, but what they have done to make this a better city.” Ackerman was noted for a laundry list of civic and educational achievements that has kept her busy for the past 40 years. Among the first, helping to establish a preschool in early Plantation. “There were just not enough preschools in the area, you had to go east to Fort Lauderdale back then,” she said. Her efforts would eventually also be a part of the founding of the Plantation Jewish Congregation, which is now Temple Kol Ami Emanu-Etl. Ackerman was also an active volunteer in Plantation schools for many years. Currently, she is the publicity and legislative chair for the GFWC Plantation Woman’s Club, maintains her practice as a psychologist, and is involved in the arts, displaying her own paintings and graphic design at local art shows. The Broward County Board of County Commissioners and the Broward County Historical Commission joined the City of Oakland Park and the Oakland Park Historical Society in co-sponsoring the event, which drew more than 250 people. The Master of Ceremonies was the Chair of the Broward County Historical Commission, Betty Cobb. Speakers included Robert E. Cannon, Director of the Broward County Libraries Division, Anne E. Sallee, Mayor of Oakland Park, Helen Landers, Broward County Historian, and Marcia Norris, President of the Oakland Park Historical Society.

Choosing the Right Specialist for a Young Athlete with an ACL Rupture By Al d e s imone , MD
A
nterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) ruptures
remain one of the most devastating injuries to the young competitive athlete. The ACL is the major supporting ligament within the knee joint providing stability to the knee during running, cutting and twisting sports. Though a traumatic collision with another athlete can cause a rupture to the ACL, a sudden alteration in speed and/or change in direction can also predispose an athlete to this injury. The athlete will often describe a loud popping sensation within the knee joint and experience severe pain, swelling and weakness combined with an inability to ambulate. Diagnosis is usually made by obtaining a proper history of injury and by performing a thorough clinical examination of the involved knee. X-rays and MRIs are extremely beneficial during this evaluation and will often help rule-out concomitant injuries to the adjacent ligaments, menisci and/or cartilage. The goal of treatment is to return the athlete back to his or her prior level of activity, including competitive sports. One may consider conservative/non-operative treatment for those patients that are extremely sedentary and inactive in athletics. In this incidence, treatment may include rehabilitation, bracing and restriction to certain activities. For those individuals who are competitive athletes and participate in high-demand twisting sports, surgical ACL reconstruction is the treatment of choice. Over the last several years, I have seen numerous patients with surgical failures from prior ACL reconstructions that have been referred to my office for further consultation and revision surgery. Having performed over 1,700 Anterior Cruciate Ligament reconstructions and over 200 revision surgical procedures, I remain convinced that this procedure is extremely technical and should be treated with state-of-the-art surgical technique and attention to detail. Though re-injury may be a common cause of failure subsequent to ACL reconstruction, technique related failures are commonly seen and can often occur from improper graft selection, tunnel placement, graft tensioning, and/or methods of fixation. Timing of surgery and proper postoperative instructions, including return to athletics, also play a significant role in prevention of re-injury. In concordance with the literature barring any anatomical or growth related considerations, I prefer to utilize bone-patella tendon-bone autograft for the young, high-demand athlete. Treatment of an Anterior Cruciate Ligament rupture continues to be a challenging problem for the high school, collegiate and community athletes. It is imperative that young individuals (and parents) understand the importance of pursuing treatment by an experienced surgeon, preferably with a subspecialty interest in knee ligament reconstruction. Failure to do so may predispose an athlete to additional surgery and prevent return to sports in a timely manner. Al DeSimone, MD is a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon. He is Sports Medicine Fellowship Trained in Shoulder and Knee Ligament Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. DeSimone is a partner in the Sports Medicine Associates of South Florida P.A. He practices at the South Florida Institute of Sports Medicine at 1600 Town Center Blvd., Suite C, in Weston. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call (954) 389-5900.

hey’ve learned the rules and regulations of the sports they
excel in, but student-athletes in Broward County also recently got an important lesson on making good choices off the field as well. It came courtesy of the Miami Dolphins, who visited South Plantation High School November 27 for an important program known as Beyond the Game. The Dolphins teamed with Nova Southeastern University’s Shepard Broad Law Center to educate the athletes on legal and moral issues affecting America’s youth today. Team officials say it is a message that student-athletes need to pay attention to ensure success in all areas of their life. “It’s important to reach out to high school student-athletes,” said Twan Russell, Director of Youth & Community Programs for the Miami Dolphins, as well as a former Dolphin player. “These young men and women are going to encounter several dilemmas within the next few years which could Left: Troy Drayton, Miami Dolphins alumni, speaking to student-athletes at South Plantation High School Below: Members of the Miami Dolphins and Nova Southeastern University’s Law Center performing skits for the student-athletes during the “Beyond the Game” program.
impact their entire lives in a negative way. We (Miami Dolphins) want to make them aware of possible situations they could face and how to handle those situations.” Close to 300 student-athletes from across the county turned out for the program, which touched on various issues including; social media, battery, and violence. The program combined skits and presentations to illustrate the harsh realities surrounding these topics. More importantly, it highlighted why the student-athletes should avoid putting themselves in troubling situations, which could adversely affect their collegiate and post-collegiate plans. Helping to drive home the point, Miami Dolphin alumni like Troy Drayton who had walked the same path as many of the young athletes. “As a former student-athlete, receiving an education and making positive choices were essential to my success,” said Drayton, Miami Dolphins Alumni and Miami Dolphins Coordinator for Youth & Community Programs. “Playing in the NFL was a privilege, but one wrong decision could have derailed not only my dreams to play in the NFL, but my life in general. I hope sharing my experiences will encourage them to think before acting because one bad move could cost you.” The Miami Dolphins Youth Programs’ mission is to emphasize the importance of education, physical fitness, and positive choices for kids in a safe and fun environment. The Miami Dolphins Youth Programs’ vision is to prepare the next generation of leaders in staying physically active through our Junior Training Camps (JTC), Youth Football Clinics, and Youth Football Camps. Quiet Title Actions – A Timely Solution That May Eliminate Your Mortgage By Omar J. Arcia, Esq., Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
I
n late 2007 and early 2008, we suffered one of the largest eco-
nomic collapses in U.S. history. The real estate market was the first to tumble, with property values depreciating hundreds of thousands of dollars in just a few short months. Overwhelmed with this financial collapse and a dwindling job market, many homeowners were either unable or unwilling to continue making their mortgage payments. Foreclosure proceedings began on most of those homes, but on some, the lenders have not initiated any foreclosure or collection proceedings, or started the foreclosure and then dismissed it before a final resolution. These are the types of cases that would qualify for a “quiet title action.”
A quiet title action is a legal action filed by a homeowner against the mortgage holder in order to legally eliminate the mortgage recorded against the home as of public record, or in legal terms, remove “cloud on the title.” The reason why a quiet title action is such a timely solution now is because under Florida’s statute of limitations, a lender only has five years from the date of default under the note and mortgage to initiate a lawsuit to collect the debt or foreclose on the home. Since many homeowners defaulted (i.e., stopped making payments) in late 2007 and early 2008 due to the economic collapse, 2013 marks the end of the five years that a mortgage holder has to initiate a foreclosure or collection action against a defaulting homeowner. If your lender has not initiated any foreclosure or collection action against you, or previously initiated an action and then dismissed it before a resolution, and five years have passed since your last payment (or the five year window is soon approaching), you are an excellent candidate to file a quiet title action in order to completely eliminate the mortgage on your home. Now that the mortgage is gone, what happens to the debt? In order to eliminate the debt, two options exist for homeowners once the mortgage lien is removed. First, a homeowner can wait until the lender files its untimely legal action to collect the debt, and effectively defend it on the five year statute of limitations theory described above. Second, a homeowner can file for bankruptcy protection after a successful quiet title action to wipe out any personal responsibility for the debt under the home loan. Detailed explanations of all options available to homeowners at risk of foreclosure are discussed in a new instructional DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine you will receive a FREE copy during your appointment with a member of our qualified legal team. EX. Everyone is interested or curious when it comes to this
subject material, although we don’t necessarily admit it openly. Even so, Shades Of Grey didn’t fly off the book shelves by itself. Sex and sexuality are important to men and women. As a physician I frequently address patient concerns regarding interest, discomfort, energy, etc. We now see more direct advertisement on television, newspaper and internet. After 2 ½ years of administering bioidentical hormones, I want to bring awareness to everyone that both men and women are having improved sexuality as a result of replenishing a natural level of hormone to the body. Aging is inevitable. Our bodies don’t produce the same level of hormone as we age. Taking care of these changes by bioidentical hormones is not only logical but also natural. How many medication ads on TV list so many side effects that you then are afraid to use the product? This is a treatment that exposes your body to something you have produced naturally. In addition, there are health benefits that go along with this. One of my patient’s asked recently, “How come people don’t know about this?” As physicians we strive to increase knowledge and awareness as we spend time (consultation) with patients to facilitate this. Some examples of common patient complaints can easily be resolved by taking hormones. For instance, “My exercise doesn’t help me lose weight.” Taking bioidentical hormones will raise testosterone levels which in turn facilitates muscle metabolism and reduction of body fat. Or, “My skin is dry. My hair is thinning.” Estrogen will replenish skin and hair better than buying expensive skin creams and hair treatments. Putting back what is missing is far more therapeutic than treating a symptom. The help is here with bioidentical hormones. You need to recognize this and want to receive it. We get older everyday but you don’t have to feel like it. I will close by sharing my personal experience. Bioidentical hormone (testosterone) therapy was very helpful. I noticed that I don’t feel like I need a nap at 2:30 in the afternoon anymore. I enjoy exercise and muscle development is more efficient. Libido is enhanced with physical benefits as well. I encourage everyone to read and understand the benefits of natural bioidentical hormones so you can enjoy the quality of life and health improvements that they provide. Keeping Your Family Safe Around Potentially Poisonous Holiday Plants By Wendy S. Levenson EdD, RN Director of Education-Westside Regional Medical Center
P
lants have been brought into the home to decorate it for
hundreds of years. Not all holiday plants are safe for children and pets and knowing which ones are poisonous is important for a happy holiday. No deaths from the poinsettia plant have ever been recorded. If ingested, it can irritate the mouth and stomach; sometimes result in diarrhea or vomiting. The sap may cause a poison ivy-like blistering on contact with the skin unless washed off immediately. Mistletoe is a name given to one of several plants, all potentially dangerous for children and pets. All parts of the mistletoe plant are poisonous. Eating 1-2 berries probably will not cause a problem for a child, but a small pet could be endangered by eating a few leaves or berries. If your child or pet eats mistletoe, seek medical advice. A child can eat 1-2 holly berries without harm, but around 20 berries can cause death, so eating holly berries is a serious concern for children and pets. Though the berries are the part that is most commonly eaten, the bark leaves, and seeds are toxic. Eating the bright, red berries of this plant will cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea All parts of the plant are quite poisonous as is the water surrounding the bulb or if the blooms are cut and put in a vase of water, that water is also toxic. Cyclamen is a flowering plant commonly seen around the winter holidays. Cyclamen tubers contain triterpinoidsaponins, which can cause nausea, vomiting, convulsions, and paralysis. This plant is more
of a concern for pets than humans. Christmas Trees Cedars, pines, and firs are very mildly toxic. The biggest concern is the possibility of puncturing part of the gastrointestinal tract from eating needles, though the tree oils may cause irritation of the mouth and skin. Toxicity might be affected by whether the tree had been sprayed with a flame retardant. Jerusalem Cherry is a species of nightshade that bears poisonous fruit. The primary poison can cause gastric upset and vomiting in people, but generally is not life-threatening. However, the fruits are extremely toxic to dogs and cats and some birds. Jequirity Bean(Indian prayer bean) this black-tipped, scarlet bean is used in many dry arrangements. The seed is poisonous if eaten and can cause death. Sweet Annie or other kinds of wormwood are often used in wreaths and other dried arrangements. While unlikely to be eaten in quantity, these plants are also poisonous. Since wreaths, dried arrangements and fresh floral arrangements can have all sorts of exotic plants tucked in them and might be sprayed with chemicals, it’s a good idea to keep them out of the reach of children and pets. For a free referral to a primary care physician in the area, contact Westside Regional Medical Center’s toll-free physician referral and health information line at 1-800-618-2631.
