community news City to Dedicate Memorial to 9-11 Attacks who perished on 9-11. The installation, which will include a full memorial ceremony, will be open to the public. The city was looking to do the installation during its own firefighter memorial, which they hold each year in October. Several years ago, they built a memorial, located at 550 NW 65 Avenue, that honors the name of city’s firefighters who have passed. “It wound up to be during Fire Prevention Month, which we felt was a little more appropriate” said Gordon. Though the city is not hosting a 9-11 Commemoration event, there are other events being held close by. The City of Sunrise will host its September 11th Remembrance Ceremony, on 9/11, at the Sunrise Public Safety Building beginning at 8:30 a.m. The center is located at 10440 West Oakland Park Boulevard. This event will feature distinguished speakers, as well as music and the presentation of colors. It is free and open to the public. After the observance, guests can also view . commemorative “Honoring September 11, 2001” exhibit in the Civic Center Art Gallery.

his September 11 will mark a milestone day in U.S. history. Cities, towns and residents worldwide will mark the tenth anniversary of the horrific terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. While many local cities are planning to mark the day, the city of Plantation’s tribute will not come until the following month, when they are planning to formally dedicate a piece of the fallen World Trade towers. “We will do something special with that in honor of the tenth anniversary,” said Plantation Fire Department Spokesperson Joel Gordon. According to Gordon, the city obtained a piece of the WTC through the efforts of local resident, Dennis Conklin, who contacted a program run by the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey. Pieces of the fallen towers are sent to cities nationwide to help honor and memorialize the victims. Plantation received a 3 foot tall chunk of concrete with a beam attached, that will permanently sit on a specially designed monument at the city’s Firefighter Memorial. “The attacks touched and hurt everyone. To say that we will be a part of it is very emotional,” said Gordon, who knew several of the firefighters

Ali says they have helped women of all walks of life. “One thing I’ve learned is that domestic violence has no prejudice, she said. Originally from Karachi, Pakistan, Ali moved to Bombay, India where she worked in 10 Hindi films and several commercials. At the age of 24, looking for change, she moved to the United States where she studied psychology at Nova Southeastern University in Florida. She created SO-ME, a socially conscious clothing company. designed to raise awareness about human rights issues and take a stand against injustices universally. No More Tears is largely funded by donations and SO-ME, but the tough economy has her looking for new lines of funding to help the victims of abuse. She is working in partnership with Women in Distress and has applied for a grant from other sources to help stay afloat. She is also looking for help from the community, many of which she says simply don’t want to talk about the problem of domestic violence, even though it is exists in all corners of society. “You will be amazed at how many women in Plantation alone are being abused on a daily basis. We need to do something about it,” she said.

fter making a name as a Bollywood actress as a young woman, Plantation resident Somy Ali is now changing lives on a much different stage. For the past few years, Ali has been helping to rescue immigrant women from domestic abuse. After working out of her home for the first few years, her non-profit organization, No More Tears, has taken a big step by moving into rented office space in Plantation. The 1,000 square foot office, which opened this summer, gives her more room and privacy to help the women who come to her. Before she had the office, intake meetings were held either in a bedroom in her home, or a fast food restaurant. “Moving to our own office has brought us to a different level,” Ali said. “We have an intake room and a waiting room.” No More Tears is devoted to providing individualized assistance to victims of domestic violence in the U.S. Among the services they can provide, legal counsel, financial assistance and psychotherapy. Since taking on their first case in 2007, they have helped close to 120 women. Ali’s first client was a woman from Bangladesh, who was a neighbor in Plantation. Her husband had been beating her for ten years, and she didn’t know where to go for help. “I realized there had to be many more women brought to this country who are

indows are “energy holes.” So, even though windows make up only about 10% of a home’s insulated shell, as much as 50% of our energy is lost through our windows. Translated into dollars and cents, up to half of what you pay for cooling pours right through them. In Florida, heat is a way of life. Incoming sunlight is harmful to wood causing premature cracking and fading. The UV fades art work, rugs, furniture and upholstery. But there is a beautiful solution from Hunter Douglas. You can have your view and at the same time block the heat and UV with Silhouette and Luminette sheer shadings from Hunter Douglas. ▸▸ Kill the heat but keep the view - Come in to our showroom and see the evidence yourself. We’ll measure the temperature of the heat coming through the window glass with and without a Silhouette and you’ll be amazed at how much cooler it is with the shade in there.
BEFORE: A picture, they say, is worth a thousand words. You be the judge. In the before image the sun fills the room and all the upholstery and rugs look washed. Imagine the heat gain in this opening.
AFTER: Compare to the same room after Silhouette window coverings have been installed. You can now sit comfortably in the same room, without dealing with the heat and yet enjoy your view of the outside.
▸▸ Solar Heat Gain Coefficient - SHGC tells us what fraction of solar energy hitting the window actually enters the home. Lower numbers are better. Standard double-pane windows have a SHGC of 0.76, meaning 76% of the solar energy gets into the home. Add Luminette Privacy sheers and watch that number drop down to as low as 0.20. With energy prices rising, you’ll want to save as much as you can. At Beautiful Windows we have many different options to help you save money. ▸▸ Daylighting - This is the practice of lighting rooms with natural light rather than generating illumination from electricity. The sheers from these products actually diffuse light as it enters and help draw it deeper into the room. Plus, you can direct incoming light where it is needed most by tilting the louvers and slats. Another added advantage is that the sheers on the Silhouette actually keep out 80% of the incoming UV to protect upholstery, flooring and art from fading. When you visit us, ask to see our oversized Silhouette with room darkening features to keep your master room cozy & cool. ▸▸ Motorization - Flipping a wall switch to operate your shades beats having to go window to window to operate each blind individually. Wall switches and remotes can be programmed to handle multiple shades individually or in unison. The “platinum technology” from Hunter Douglas can be integrated into any home automation system. ▸▸ View Through - If view is important, then you want the “4” Silhouette because it offers the most “view through” (space between louvers). It brings the beauty of the outdoors in. The Luminette marries the beauty of sheers with the privacy of soft draperies and allows you to rotate the vanes for infinite degrees of light control. ▸▸ Living smart - Going green is about making small changes that can have a large impact: Energy costs dollars – so the more energy we save, the fewer dollars we spend. Plus, by saving money and energy resources, we leave a healthier world to future generations. Living smart is the best choice for everyone. Visit Beautiful Windows’ 4,000 sq. ft. Draperies and Blinds Showroom. It is a one-stop shopping source for all your window covering needs. With over 19 years of experience, you know you are in good hands. allowed two bounces of the ball. Players take to the world’s best known courts and the number 1 ranked players are honored as the Wheelchair Tennis World Champions during the ITF World Champions Dinner held at Roland Garros Stadium in France. The exhibition was organized by Morgenstern, who is a familiar face on the courts of the Frank Veltri Tennis Center. “I thought most people down here had never seen wheelchair tennis being played in Broward County,” Morgenstern said. In addition to bringing wheelchair tennis to Plantation, Morgenstern also worked with the tennis center this summer to find ways to make summer camp accessible for children of military parents. With the blessing of Tennis Center officials, Morgenstern tirelessly went through recruiting stations and eventually the US. Southern Command to find children, ages 6-16, who live in the Plantation area and have a family member deployed or on active duty. As many as 10-15 children came out and enjoyed tennis, swimming and other sports. Morgenstern said he is hoping to expand the program next summer.
A
longtime tennis fan helped to bring a one-of-a-kind exhibition to Plantation recently. For the first time in its history, the Frank Veltri Tennis Center hosted a Wheelchair Tennis Exhibition on its courts. More than one dozen world class tennis athletes in wheelchairs demonstrated their skills before dozens of fans August 13. “Fans had a chance to see what dedicated athletes can really do, if they make a total effort to make it happen,” said Mark Morgenstern of Plantation, one of the organizers of the exhibition. The free program, provided in partnership with the National Wheelchair Sports Fund of Boynton Beach, included singles, doubles, and mixed doubles play by the athletes of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour. The NEC, which originated in 1992 with 11 international tournaments, has grown to more than 173 tournaments in 46 countries. It boasts more than $1million dollars in prize money to its athletes and is one of the fastest growing wheelchair sports in the world. Organizers say it integrates very easily with the able-bodied game since it can be played on any regular tennis court, with no modifications to the court or the size of rackets or balls. Wheelchair tennis follows the same rules as able-bodied tennis, with the only exception being that the wheelchair tennis player is

Plantation Fire Department Honored by Peruvian Colleagues By Julie Levin
T
hough they speak a different language, and live in a different culture, there is an undeniable bond between the Plantation Fire Department, and their counterparts who man the Union Chalaca Fire Station in Peru. So much so, that recently several members of the Union Chalaca Fire Department traveled to Plantation to present Chief Joe Harris with a commemorative medal. marking a major milestone in their department. The medal signified Union Chalaca’s 150th anniversary of service, and they wanted their fellow firefighters in Plantation to share in it. “This is a true honor. To be considered an integral part of their celebration is a great honor for us,” said the Chief. The medal was presented in June, several years after a relationship was formed between the two departments. It began when Plantation firefighter Capt. Robert Villalon, who has friends and relatives in the Union Chalaca area, first introduced himself to his firefighting brethren. Since then, members of the Union Chalaca Department have been making regular visits to the Plantation Fire Department every time they come to the United States. In return, Plantation firefighters do the same when they travel to Peru. “We have shared a brotherhood with Union Chalaca for some time now,” explained Chief Harris. “Both departments are very similar and share a similar heritage.” Though Union Chalaca is older having been in service for 150 years, the departments share the unique link of volunteerism. Union Chalaca is the oldest, all volunteer fire department in Peru, while Plantation is the largest volunteer fire department in Florida with 190 active members. “We both have a long standing Plantation Fire Chief Joseph Harris receives 150th anniversary commemorative medal from Captain Jorge Martinez of the Union Chalaca Fire Department in Peru. tradition in our communities and are very similar in how we are made up and says no matter wher. firefighters travel, there is a link that instantly connects them to how we work,” said Plantation Department spokesperson Joel Gordon. others in far away fire houses. “There is a brotherhood between firefighters, spoken Gordon added that it is not uncommon for firefighters to visit other fire stations and unspoken, throughout the world,” said Gordon. worldwide. ince becoming owners of TAG USA Gymnastics over two years ago, Marissa and Michael Zoldan recreated the gym into the most successful gymnastics program in Broward County. Not only does it boast the largest and most state-of-theart facility around, but the strongest competitive teams as well. Taking the headlines, though, the TAG USA Gymnastics Foundation continues its commitment to finding a cure for cancer, in addition to helping the less fortunate in our community. The TAG USA Gymnastics Foundation is currently hosting “Supplied for Success,” a school supply drive to benefit Kids In Distress. Anyone interested in making a donation is welcome to stop by the gym; you don’t need to have children enrolled in the programs to help TAG USA fill its collection box with new pencils, crayons,

glue sticks, folders, composition books, and other backto-school necessities. They will be accepting donations until Friday, August 12th. In addition, the TAG USA Gymnastics Foundation continues its efforts to fight cancer. Two years ago, Marissa Zoldan was treated for uterine cancer and unfortunately was recently diagnosed with another health scare. Hearing a diagnosis of cancer will irreversibly change anyone’s life and Marissa, Michael and their family wish to help erase cancer so that other people will not have to suffer through similar traumatic surgeries or treatments. Breast, cervical and uterine cancers are prevalent and the TAG USA Gymnastics Foundation is committed to creating more awareness and raising funds to find a cure. In addition to its philanthropic work, TAG USA Gymnastics is committed to developing champion gymnasts. It is poised for yet another impressive season. “Considering 2010-2011 was only our third competitive season, our teams were incredible, especially when compared to other gyms that have been around for more than twenty years,” boasts Marissa. TAG USA won nearly 50 State Championships and many of its gymnasts qualified for Nationals. “One of our elite gymnasts won six gold medals at the Mexican National Games and is now training for the Pan-American Games,” notes Marissa. “Even our first year TAG USA Cheer team won a Junior State Championship.” The success of TAG USA Gymnastics’ is based on a different approach to the young athletes. Marissa and Michael’s personal approach to the patents and children is what makes TAG USA so special. In addition, the talented coaching staff strives to meet each member’s individual needs. The gym itself adds to TAG USA’s success. It’s been a year since the amazing 38,000 square foot facility opened. It’s now large enough to comfortably accommodate all ages and levels of athletes, from tiny tots to elite gymnasts.

The ‘Mommy & Me’ and ‘Toddler’ programs have a separate 2,500 square feet of gym with mini trampolines, equipment, and climbing apparatus. The rest of the gym is divided so that all preschool classes, beginner to advanced recreational gymnastics classes, trampoline classes, cheer, and all gymnastics teams have their own space. There is no overcrowding of areas and no waiting in line to use the floor or any equipment. The future looks bright for TAG USA Gymnastics. Plans are now in the works to open an adult spinning/ aerobics room, a game room, and a middle school athletic training area. Over the summer, additional air conditioning was completed, the trench pit was finished, Marissa and Michael Zoldan and a couple of other surprises were added. As TAG USA Gymnastics continues to grow, the Zoldans hope to have the opportunity to welcome every Broward athlete into the TAG USA family. TAG USA Gymnastics is located at 1951 North Commerce Parkway in Weston. TAG USA offers recreational classes for children from ages 12 months and up. Fall classes begin the week of August 22nd. For advanced students, there is a boys and girls competitive gymnastics team, a trampoline and tumbling team, and cheer team. legally speaking Cervical Injuries From Car Accidents – Are They Preventable? September 2011 | To Advertise in Plantation Town Times, Please call 954-306-1007 | www.plantationtowntimes.com
Accidents happen.
By Howard Citron
W
hiplash is a common and painful injury caused by motor vehicle accidents. While almost everyone has heard the name, most people don’t have a clear idea of what whiplash is, how serious it can be or how to prevent it.
They can even happen to you.
How Do Car Accidents Cause Whiplash?
Whiplash is a tearing of the muscles, tendons and ligaments in the neck that occurs when the body is exposed to a sudden jolt, such as in a car accident, a fall, or a blow to the head while playing sports. The injury is most common in rear-end collisions, but can occur from a collision from any direction. Additionally, it doesn’t have to be a high-speed crash. In a collision, the car is abruptly accelerated forward (or in another direction). Everything in the car, including your body, resists this sudden forward motion, which is why you feel pushed back in your seat. Braced against the seat, your torso is carried forward with the car. If your head is not braced, it can be jerked back for a second or so. The jolt of the crash can whip your head up and back, tearing muscles and other structures in your neck. Your neck’s reflex reaction is to pull your head forward, but that can be overdone in a car accident, making the injury worse.
What Are the Symptoms of Whiplash?
Often, the symptoms of whiplash are not immediately apparent after a car accident. They typically take 12 to 24 hours to develop and the symptoms may get worse every day until properly treated. Whiplash commonly takes several months to as long as two (2) years after the accident to heal. Common symptoms of whiplash occur in the neck, shoulders, back, and arms, and can include: ▸▸ Pain, stiffness, numbness, tingling and/or swelling ▸▸ Muscle spasms ▸▸ Weakness or temporary loss of movement in the neck ▸▸ Headaches, dizziness, ringing in the ears ▸▸ Blurred vision or other vision changes ▸▸ Cognitive issues such as problems concentrating, memory loss and irritability ▸▸ Depression and sleep interruption ▸▸ Difficulty performing daily activities at home or work

How Can I Reduce the Risk of a Whiplash Injury?
Your first line of defense against whiplash is to wear a seatbelt at all times while in an automobile and to properly position your headrest. The top of the headrest should be just below the top of your head. Everyone in the car should routinely adjust the headrest just as they routinely fasten their safety belts. Keep in mind, however, that whiplash can be caused by a collision from any direction. If your head snaps to the side, for example, the headrest will not be in a position to protect you. After any car accident, be aware of your symptoms. If you are experiencing any neck pain, be sure to be evaluated by a doctor.

ust about every scientific and governmental organization is now in agreement that there really is an Autism epidemic in the US. If it were merely the case that the diagnosis is just more noticeable, then where are the 1/100 autistic adults that should be walking around who went unnoticed? Any experienced teacher will agree that the explosion of children who exhibit speech and language delay, social difficulties and repetitive or compulsive behaviors is a new phenomenon. I am a physician who has been following up on the medical outcomes of children who were at high risk from prematurity, severe illness, drug and alcohol abuse, complicated births and HIV exposure. It was at Early Steps in Broward County that I got to experience, first hand, this new disorder that we call Autism Spectrum. By definition, epidemics in human beings are environmental (the flu, infectious diarrhea, radiation exposure, for example). People are not fruit flies, and our children did not genetically change in this century. In fact, I believe that it is just the opposite; that our fragile fetuses and newborns have the genetic background of 3 billion years during which time there haven’t been 85,000 man-made chemicals in the air, food and water. Simply put, our bodies cannot correctly eliminate offending agents and this results in our immune system going into overdrive. Somehow, this affects susceptible individuals – males (definitely the weaker sex), those with a family history of allergy or autoimmune disease, premature infants, siblings of children who already are affected – and instead of turning on the genes that create normal development, their bodies spend a great deal of energy on the toxic cleanup instead.
Why do so many conventional medical experts believe that autism cannot be cured? I’m sure that is because we are talking apples and oranges. The autism that was first described in the late 1930’s (as a psychiatric, not medical, condition) is simply NOT the same disorder that CAN be treated in today’s version. Today’s affected children do not ALL show total isolation, severe disruptive behaviors, lack of eye contact or an inability to develop. More importantly, many of the affected individuals who have the diagnosis of Autism today have lots of problems with gastro-intestinal symptoms which ARE amenable to effective, inexpensive and safe nutritional supplements such as probiotics and extra vitamins. Although improvement from special foods is a controversial issue, young children who demonstrate food sensitivities DO improve when offending agents are withheld from their diet. Many disruptive behaviors such as oppositional behavior and tantrums can be affected by diagnosing and treating gut health in these individuals. Additionally, when these simple interventions are combined with traditional therapies such as Speech & Language, Applied Behavioral Analysis, Occupational or Physical Therapy, the patient’s progress can become remarkable. Regardless of what we call it, every child deserves early detection for this modern disorder so that early, safe, inexpensive and effective interventions are instituted in order to maximize an affected individual’s potential development. Dr. Udell is a Board Certified Pediatrician and Neonatologist with over 35 years of experience. He is presently the Medical Director of The Child Development Center of America in Weston, where he practices Developmental Pediatrics. Look for Dr. Udell’s blog at www.theautismdoctor.com.

school news Scientist Looking To Bring Solar Education To Plantation Schools let students safely observe the Sun. Students also learn about UV-Radiation awareness. One of the more unique aspects that Solar Week offers is that students get to submit questions online anytime during the week, and then have those questions answered by actual working scientists. “I want students to know that learning science can be fun and rewarding and it is a great supplement for the A peak at the heavens! classroom,” said Stryder,. Last school year, Stryder and other Solar Week volunteers visited at least six local South Florida schools in support of Solar Week, including the David Posnack Hebrew Day School in Davie, Silver Ridge Elementary and Nova Blanche Forman Elementary in Davie and Gator Run Elementary in Weston.

im Stryder is looking to give Plantation students an “out-of-this-world” experience this school year. He’s hoping to enhance their love of astronomy and the solar sciences through a program called “Solar Week”, an interactive, outreach program run through NASA. The program has been offered in the area for the past two years, but teachers in Plantation apparently Jim Stryder works with Nova Blanche Forman Elementary students during Solar Week. The students were learning how the visually haven’t seen the light yet. “We impaired would study the sun through their sense of touch! haven’t had any schools from north of I-595 in the Plantation or Sunrise area,” said Stryder, a UC-Berkeley Solar Week volunteer, who has been part of the outreach program since its inception in 1999. Solar Week is geared for students primarily in 4th grade up through high school levels. It is a twice-a-year online event produced by UC-Berkeley, NASA and others in the industry, to teach the nation’s students about the solar sciences. “Each day is a different themed approach about how science studies the sun, what we know about it, and what we don’t,” said Stryder, whose background is in Aerospace Journalism. Every day, students and teachers can go online to take part in different activities and learning games in relationship to solar learning. Whenever possible, volunteers like Stryder help supplement the online activities with actual “hands-on” activities, at the schools. Sometimes they will bring specially designed solar-equipped telescopes that
The next projected Solar Week will be in either late September or October and is completely free of charge to both the students and the schools. The program can be run anytime during the year, not just during the designated “Solar Week” and it doesn’t have to be offered in a 5-day period. For more information, visit www. solarweek.org. New Exhibit Gives Students Close-Up Look at U.S. History the students will have a chance to view the replicas, which were created to look exactly like the real constitution, complete with ink splotches and other markings. Aiello says it is designed to bring to life the reality of what they may have read about the constitution in a textbook. “We immerse kids in experiences so that they learn through experiences, not through a test. So when they come in and are able to really look at the documents after having studied it, I think it will bring it alive for them,” she said. Founded in 1959, Aiello says the mission of Junior Achievement of South Florida “is to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in the global economy. We believe we help children own their own economic success.”

lantation 8th graders are going to be among those who will have an up close opportunity to see an integral part of American history. Thanks to a project headed up locally by the Junior Achievement of South Florida, the students will have the chance to learn about the cornerstone of their rights and freedoms by viewing exact replicas of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights. The array of constitutional plaques will be housed in a brand new gallery within JA World Patten Family Finance Park in Coconut Creek and will be unveiled at a ceremony on September 16 and 17. “It is an exciting undertaking, and we envision these plaques as a wonderful complement to our storefront displays and other business enterprise elements,” said Melissa Aiello, President of JA South Florida. From that day on, as many as 400 Broward County 8th graders each day will have a chance to view the plaques as part of a special field trip.. Since 2009, all county 5th and 8th graders have visited JA World to take part in their curriculum, which focuses on business, economic and life-skills programs for students k-12. This year, the 8th graders will have the added bonus of viewing the constitutional plaques. Students from Seminole Middle will be going in November, while students from Plantation Middle will be visiting in April. The plaques are part of a national effort known as the Spirit for Freedom Tour, which travels to 20 cities each year to immerse students, teachers and parents in the historical significance of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights. While those exhibits are temporary, the exhibit at JA World will be on site permanently, thanks to a gift by the Leo Goodwin Foundation. “Our goal is to encourage youth to understand our nation’s history and the importance of the Constitution, and with 50,000 children coming through the doorways at JA World, it is an ideal partnership. “said Alan Goldberg, a trustee of the Leo Goodwin Foundation. chool has started. And while weekdays may be filled with homework, you may be looking for something fun to do to help unwind on the weekends. Plantation has just what you’re looking for. Whether you live in the east, central or western portions of the City, Plantation offers residents unprecedented access to recreation facilities, events and programs, many of which are free or at a minimal cost. The City has over 50 tennis courts for your enjoyment located at Plantation Mayor Diane Veltri Bendekovic parks throughout the City. Formal tennis lessons are available at the Frank Veltri Tennis Center at Central Park, or your kids can participate in one of the free tennis clinics held at the Jim Ward Community Center. The City also hosts several prestigious tennis tournaments throughout the year at the Frank Veltri Tennis Center. Plantation just recently hosted the USTA Girls 14 Clay Court Championships in July, bringing the country’s brightest young tennis stars to Plantation. In January 2012, be sure to take in the Plantation Open, which includes two professional USTA sanctioned men’s and women’s championship tournaments. We are very proud to announce that after over 60 years in Miami-Dade County, the USTA moved the Orange Bowl International Tennis Championship tournament to the Frank Veltri Tennis Center. This year’s tournament will be held December 5-11, 2011. There is no cost to enjoy any of these quality tennis tournaments. Throughout the year, horse shows are being presented at the Plantation Equestrian Center, one of our newest recreation facilities, located at Volunteer Park. Central Park Aquatics Center hosts a variety of swimming and diving classes, or you can enjoy a relaxing lap swim anytime. For the kids, you will find a refreshing water playground there, as well as at the Jim Ward Community Center and Plantation Woods. There is no better or
healthier way to cool off during the hot summer months. With 42 passive parks sprinkled throughout Plantation, chances are there is one within walking distance from your home. Parks such as Rae Carole Armstrong Liberty Tree Park, Hoffman Park behind Deicke Auditorium, the Multicultural Park located in the Park East neighborhood, Camp Everglades at Volunteer Park, and Plantation Woods with its water splash pad, provide a safe play area for children and a quiet, shaded resting spot for you. And all are free to enjoy from dusk until dawn. Each Saturday from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM, the City hosts a Farmers Market in the parking lot at Volunteer Park. You’ll find fresh organic and non-organic produce, breads and other baked goodies, homemade pasta and sauces, plants and herbs, and so much more. We hope you’ll stop by for a visit. During the summer months, the Plantation Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of summer camp programs for children ages 5-16. Day camps are fun filled, provide a wide range of activities and are managed and run by City of Plantation Parks and Recreation staff members. The City also offers specialty camp experiences such as Tennis Camp, Share-A-Pony Camp, Drama and Theater Camp, and the Don Law Golf Academy. The City’s Annual Independence Day celebration is second to none, with a parade that runs along Broward Boulevard toward City Hall in the morning, and later that evening, a free concert and one of the best fireworks displays in Broward County. Children can also participate in the Helen B. Hoffman Plantation Library Summer Reading Program held during the months of June and July. I hope you will take advantage of the many recreation offerings the City provides. Have a safe and exciting summer. For more information on the City’s parks, visit our website at Plantation.org, or call 954-452-2510.

financial planning Grim Future for Retirees? Perhaps Not By Jeffrey D. Bliss, CEP, RFC
O
n August 14, 2011, The Wall Street Journal published an article titled, “Savers Stuck With Recovery Bill” which offered up a grim forecast for retirees, specifically: ▸ Savers could be “punished” by low interest rates for many years to come. ▸ More lean years when it comes to earning much in the way of income. ▸ Bills are going up five, six or seven percent but income on safe money is nothing. ▸ Having to pay taxes on income digs the hole even deeper. ▸ Due to inflation, investors are losing purchasing power at a pretty scary rate. Neither the writer nor the advisers interviewed offered a solution resulting in safety, reasonable returns and adequate sustainable income. In fact, the article concluded, “Unfortunately, it’s often the fun stuff in retirement, like traveling or dining out that will have to get pared back.” How depressing! Here’s some good news. Economists the world over have heralded a solid solution that many advisors are unfamiliar with. Say you’re 64 years old and ready to retire. You’ve saved $300,000—60% traditional IRA / 40% non-IRA. Let’s assume you want to protect your principal and create a monthly income stream. This may be accomplished by laddering a 5-year immediate annuity for income years 1-5, and two tax-deferred annuities for income years 6-10 and years 11 and beyond respectively. (You’d need nearly $1,000,000 in a 1.5% CD to match the annuity income years 1-10 and over $1.8m thereafter).
An advisor who specializes in asset preservation and income distribution may be able to help you achieve: ▸▸ Safety of Principal ▸▸ Reasonable Rates of Return ▸▸ Guaranteed Income ▸▸ Additional Liquidity ▸▸ Tax Savings “Laddering annuities has been a little-known investment strategy, but it has shown to be a very effective tool that withstands fluctuating market conditions. The technique provides a comfortable income stream throughout your retirement.”1 1

ongestive heart failure is a condition in which the heart’s function as a pump is inadequate to meet the body’s needs. About 5 million people in the United States suffer from this condition, and every year about 500,000 new cases are reported. About 250,000 people die every year because of heart failure. Congestive heart failure can be caused by increased workload and stress on the heart. The following are examples of some conditions that can lead to heart failure. ▸▸ Heart Attack ▸▸ Coronary Artery Disease or Atherosclerosis ▸▸ High Blood Pressure ▸▸ Heart Valve Abnormalities ▸▸ Cardiomyopathies ▸▸ Hyperthyroid disease ▸▸ Diabetes ▸▸ Emphysema ▸▸ HIV-infection and other infection-caused cardiomyopathies In rare instances, women can also suffer heart failure during childbirth in a condition called peripartum cardiomyopathy. Risk Factors for Congestive Heart Failure Age: Since this disease is usually a progressive condition the risk of heart failure is increased with age. Genetics: Tendency to develop heart failure, especially when caused by cardiomyopathies, may run in families. It is important to note that dietary habits of the family must be taken into account: when all members of the family eat high fat, high cholesterol diet, this maybe the underlying cause of atherosclerosis, not genetics. Gender: Men are at higher risk of developing heart failure than women, although the difference narrows with advancing age. Ethnicity: African Americans are at higher risk than Caucasians, and have higher mortality rate due to heart failure. Alcohol Abuse and smoking: Chronic alcohol use can lead to high blood pressure, heart muscle damage, and even cause cardiomyopathy. The carbon monoxide in cigarettes is thought to damage the heart muscle and increase its susceptibility to virus infection. Exercise and Dietary Habits: Lack of exercise and eating fatty foods can increase the risk of developing coronary artery disease, which lead to heart failure. The symptoms of congestive heart failure include: ▸▸ Fatigue ▸▸ Shortness of breath, especially during physical activity or when lying down ▸▸ Wheezing or dry cough, especially when lying down ▸▸ Sleep apnea ▸▸ Loss of appetite and weight loss ▸▸ Swelling of the feet, ankles, and legs ▸▸ Swelling or discomfort in the upper abdomen, sometimes enlargement of the liver Treatment Treating heart failure almost always means treating the underlying cause of this condition. These include lifestyle changes (stop smoking and stop drinking alcohol) and dietary changes (eat healthier food, stop eating fatty diets), treating high blood pressure and heart valve abnormalities. Medicines that improve heart function can also be prescribed. Some examples are: ▸▸ Diuretics ▸▸ Medication to reduce blood pressure ▸▸ Medication that strengthens the heart’s contraction ▸▸ Medication that slows the heart’s rate Severe heart failure may require surgery, such as balloon dilation of artery blockages, heart transplantation, pacemaker implants to control the heart rhythm. In cases of valve defects, surgery to repair or replace the damaged valves may be necessary.

legally speaking Mortgage Lender Myths They Want You to Believe By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
M
ost mortgage lenders and servicers are taking advantage of the public’s sense of desperation and lack of information to strong-arm homeowners into signing one-sided loan modification agreements. Prior to signing any loan modification agreement or making any other significant decision affecting your home loan, it is critical that every homeowner be fully aware of the following “myths” that most mortgage lenders want you to believe.
Myth No. 1: If I signed for a bad loan, I have to suffer the consequences of that decision. In reality, federal and state laws impose severe penalties on lenders that engaged in predatory lending practices. These penalties include cancellation of the entire loan and/or a refund of all payments made by the borrower, including any down payment. More importantly, these penalties and remedies related to the original loan transaction may even be available against your current lender. Myth No. 2: Once a foreclosure is filed, the bank can immediately seize your bank accounts, garnish your wages and/or repossess any vehicles you own to satisfy your mortgage debt. Florida law prevents any lender from seizing any assets until after a final judgment of foreclosure, and only after authorization from the Court is obtained to satisfy a “deficiency judgment” (i.e., the difference between the amount owed to the bank and the amount for which the property sold at the foreclosure sale). Myth No. 3: If you are negotiating a loan modification with your lender, they cannot proceed with a foreclosure of your home. This is absolutely false. Actually, lenders can and will use the foreclosure process, especially during a loan modification application, as a means of coercing the homeowner to accept a one-sided loan modification agreement that may even contain a provision where the homeowner gives up all defenses and claims he/she may possess against the lender. Don’t sign any modification or forbearance agreement without first consulting with a qualified attorney in the area of foreclosure defense. Myth No. 4: The lender will act in good faith to offer you the best terms possible during a loan modification. In actuality, the lender’s only concern is their “bottom line.” If the deal does not make sense financially to them, they will force you to accept a one-sided loan modification agreement, or attempt to force you out of your home through a foreclosure process. Most importantly, never assume what you are being told by the mortgage company is the complete truth. We hope you are able to use the information in this article as a tool to assist you in any preliminary discussions with your lender about your home loan. However, this information is not meant to substitute proper legal advice. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, if you are in the middle of a frustrating loan modification process, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 1-800-770-7102 to schedule a free consultation, or visit www. arcialawfirm.com for more information. Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, or at risk of foreclosure are discussed in a new instructional DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight for Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a complimentary copy during your consultation to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team. You may also purchase the DVD online for $39.95 (plus S/H) at www.arcialawfirm.com. www.plantationtowntimes.com

it’s their business Distinctive Carpet and Tile Provides Total Flooring Needs By Julie Levin
I
f you are looking to replace, or upgrade the flooring in your home or business, make sure you call on Distinctive Carpet and Tile, the family owned and operated business South Florida has been relying on for close to 20 years for all their flooring needs. Distinctive Carpet and Tile is located at 2461 South University Drive, in the same location since 1992. “People have a good experience with us. They come out and feel that they have been treated right,” said Marv Lieberman, who co-owns Distinctive Carpet and Tile with son Jason. Whenever clients walk into their Davie store, they can rest assured they will always be greeted by one of the owners, not someone at a large chain store who is simply putting in their hours. “One of us is always here, customers are always dealing with the boss,” said Jason Lieberman, who joined the business six years ago. Distinctive Carpet and Tile offers a full line of carpet, tile, wood, and vinyl flooring for any job; residential, commercial or industrial. “Anything you can put on a floor, we sell and install,” he said. The team at Distinctive Carpet and Tile gets to know their clients when they come in to help figure out exactly the flooring they are looking for, in their budget. They are led by Marv, who has more than 41 years in the carpet business, and knows how to make a client happy. “We are extremely competitive pricewise. Secondly, we are very easy to work with and we have excellent service,” he said.
Customers looking for new carpet can choose from major manufacturers like Mohawk, Shaw, Beaulieu and many more. Whether it is a Shag, Berber, plush or pattern, Distinctive Carpet and Tile can help find a style to suit any room. They also offer the Smart Strand Carpet from Mohawk, which delivers the newest in carpet technology, with a lifetime stain protection warranty. “It protects against any stain for the life of the product,” said Marv. They also offer the latest in laminate wood, which is known for its durability, ease of maintenance, and great look. They carry a huge selection of laminates to choose from including beveled, hand scraped and distressed looks from manufacturers like Quick Step, Mohawk, Mannington. They carry all major name brands as well as generic name laminates. They also offer engineered wood from names like Mannington and Johnson. If it is vinyl you are looking for, Distinctive Carpet and Tile carries the newest in vinyl technology, including looks that are virtually water and scratch resistant. They feature glueless vinyl products such as Konecto and Endura. Marble and wood looks are also available. Because Distinctive Carpet and Tile has built up a great reputation over the years, most of their business is referral-based from satisfied clients. “People like that we don’t do a high pressure sale, like other places that work on commission,” said Marv. Distinctive Carpet and Tile will have most jobs measured within 24-48 hours, and installed within 4 days.
They use an experienced and professional staff of installers, who know how to get the job done properly and to the customers satisfaction. “They have excellent craftsmanship, they are neat, and they show up on time,” said Marv. For customers who can’t make it to the Davie location, they also offer a Jason and Marv Lieberman, co-owners of Distinctive Carpet and Tile convenient “Shop at Home” service, where a representative will visit prospective clients in their home, or business, at a time that works for them. The representative can provide flooring samples, measure the project, and provide a price, just like in the store. “If there is a mobility issue or if it is too far, they never have to come into the store if they don’t want to,” said Lieberman. Distinctive Carpet and Tile is centrally located from almost anywhere in Broward at its location just off I-595 and University Drive. You’ll find them at 2461 S. University Drive in Davie. You can phone them at 954473-9300 or visit them online at www.distinctivecarpet. com. They are open 7 days a week.

rissy is a 1 year old Brussels Griffon who loves to play with her toys all day long, especially her bone. She was rescued by her by her new family, the Wolfes, from Broward County Animal Control where she was close to being put down. Crissy is a cuddler and can’t help herself from crawling in between her owners at night. She is a wonderful, loving dog full of energy and excitement. Crissy was last seen jumping, no springing, up and down waiting for her next meal.

18-24 months and says it is important a child’s first visit to the dentist not coincide with a dental emergency. Good dental habits can be started at a very young age. “It is a good time to educate both the child and parent, give them an idea of what future visits will be like,” said Dr. Sethi, who also volunteers her time to make sure underprivileged children receive the dental care they need. American Smile Center is a multi-doctor practice combining the talents of not just Dr. Sethi, but also Dr. Martin Bakalar, a 1966 graduate of the NYU School of Dentistry, Dr. Armin Daee, a 2010 Nova Southeastern University School of Dentistry graduate, and Dr. Page Schreiber, a 1992 Loyola Graduate. The Dr. Sangeeta Sethi staff has more than 100 years of combined dentistry experience in all areas of general, restorative, and cosmetic dentistry. Clients in any age group will feel comfortable with their range of expertise. The staff also makes it a priority to stay on the cutting edge of the newest treatments. “We are always looking to make our patients experience much more comfortable and satisfying,” said Crouse. The doctors work in tandem with a dedicated staff of hygienists, dental assistants, and office personnel who have been with the American Smile Center for many years, and make a point of getting to know their clients. Throughout the year, staff members go out into the community to visit local schools and daycare centers to help teach youngsters about dental health. The American Smile Center has been serving patients in Plantation for a year. Previously, they were in Lauderdale Lakes as the Sethi Dental Group. “Plantation seems to be a very health conscious, preventative, type of community that cares about its health. It is a great, very young community,” said Crouse. They invite everyone to come by and see what they offer. In addition to doctors in all age groups, they are also multi-lingual, and have staff members that speak not only English and Spanish, but also Hindi, Farsi and Creole. “We are as broad and diversified as South Florida is,” said Crouse.

American Smile Center offers general, restorative, cosmetic and implant dentistry for the entire family, anything from cleanings and fillings to extractions, implants, dentures, orthodontics, root canal, and oral surgery. They are led by Dr. Sangeeta Sethi, a 1991 graduate of the NYU School of Dentistry, who specializes in Pedodontics (children’s dentistry), as well as Orthodontics. Dr. Sethi puts a strong focus on early childhood care. She believes children should start seeing a dentist as young as 18 months, not only to make them more comfortable with the process, but also to get a better long term result by focusing on prevention. While many orthodontists don’t start treating children until the early tween years, Dr. Sethi believes earlier is better in order to correct any misalignment of the teeth before the permanent teeth come in. She says baby teeth do serve an important purpose. “It is a different approach to care,” she said. “If you catch the problem before the permanent teeth are in, the teeth will self-correct,” she said. She recommends giving youngsters their first dental experience anywhere from
