Make Time for Fun

T

he excitement of the London Olympics is over, summer vaca-

tions are fading into mere memories, and the kids are back in school. Our lives are slowly returning to ‘normal.’ Before everyone gets too busy with after school activities, sports and music lessons, make time for fun. The fall season in Florida has plenty to offer for fun in the sun. The sun is not quite so scorching hot, and the ocean waters are still warm and beautiful. Turn off the TVs and game consoles for a bit and get out there to enjoy the surf, go shelling, visit the Florida Keys, take a tour through the Everglades, get out on a boat and catch some fish, visit the nation’s oldest city, or enjoy the thrills of your favorite theme parks in Orlando and Tampa. Whatever your pick, just do it together. Our hectic lives force us to spend time separated from our loved ones for most of the day, so make sure you take the opportunity to enjoy each other’s company when you can.

Local Theater Announces Upcoming Schedule By Julie Levin

f you are in the mood to enjoy high-quality,

local theater, make sure you check out the latest offerings from the Mosaic Theatre. The award-winning professional Equity theatre, which is based at the American Heritage School, has unveiled its 2012-2013 line-up Among the performances, a theatrical first for the Plantation-based theater group. “For the first time, we are going to do a ‘rep project’, which highlights the work of playwright Rajiv Joseph” said Richard Jay Simon, Executive/Artistic Director of the Mosaic Theatre. The “rep project” gives audiences the opportunity to see two entirely different shows in the same theater. The performances are usually linked either dramatically or created by the same playwright. The Mosaic will feature two plays by Rajiv Joseph, Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo and Animals Out of Paper. Both will alternate performances for six weeks. “If you wanted to see a Saturday matinee of “Bengal Tiger” and then go, have dinner, come back, you can see an entirely different show. You really get to see the magic of a black box and how quickly we can convert from one show to another,” said Simon. Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo is a recent hit on Broadway. “It is very topical, very fresh, very exciting,” Simon added. Kicking off the season, the Mosaic’s 12th, will be the Southeastern Premiere of the recent New York sensa-

10

tion, The Diary of a Madman which featured Geoffrey Rush. The show begins its run September 20th. That will be followed by a new play from the writer of Mosaic’s award winning hit, The Seafarer, and the plays Shining City and The Weir. Mosaic is pleased to be just the second theater in the United States to present The Birds by Tony Award nominee Conor McPherson. The Mosaic Theatre describes it as a chilling psychological portrait inspired by Daphne Du Maurier’s short story (on which Hitchcock’s famed thriller was based) “I love the chills and thrills of that play,” said Simon. The final show of the season has not yet been announced. Performances are: Thursdays 8 pm, Fridays 8 pm, Saturdays 3 & 8 pm, Sundays 2 pm. Mosaic Theatre is located at American Heritage School, 12200 West Broward Blvd. (just East of Flamingo Road). Season subscriptions purchased prior to June 16 are $167.00 for adults, $145.00 for seniors and $64.00 for students. Group rates are also available. wo Plantation women were among a select few recently

honored as the 2012 Hispanic Women of Distinction. Yolanda Rodriguez and Xiomara Fraga were among 12 successful and inspirational Latin women selected for the annual honor, which seeks to bring awareness to the achievements and philanthropic efforts of Latinas in Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. “This is such an exclusive group of accomplished women that when I was given the good news, I was humbled,” said Rodriguez, who is the Manager of State Operations for AARP Florida.”South Florida is filled with talented women doing great things for their community, it is wonderful to be included in this year’s class of honorees.” The Hispanic Women of Distinction includes women from every facet of the public and private sector in leadership roles. Rodriguez has shown both, first as the first female manager for the City of Margate and now the Manager of State Operations for AARP. “Where I once championed good policy, programs and services for 53,000 residents in Margate, I now serve 2.7 million members of AARP Florida. This is a special time of privilege and honor in my life,” she said. The 12 Hispanic Women of Distinction, as well as the Latina Pioneer for 2012, were honored at the 11th Annual Hispanic Women of Distinction Charity Awards Luncheon August 17 at Signature Grand in Davie. More than 1,000 people turned out to pay tribute to the women, who intertwine American entrepreneurship with their values and traditions. Presented by Latina Style Magazine in partnership with Bank of America, the 120-foot runway where honorees walked included a fashion show by the Colonnade Outlets at Sawgrass Mills, The cocktail began with a complimentary mojito, Latin entertainment, as well as a sponsor business exhibit.

For Xiomara Fraga, who works with the Simon Property Group as Director of Marketing and Business Development, being named as an honoree was a privilege. “I have attended this prominent event in the past and have always felt such admiration for the women being recognized, so you can imagine my emotions upon learning I was selected as one of the honorees this year. I am so proud to be Xiomara Fraga recognized among women who are known Yolanda Rodriguez for commitment to the communities we serve while maintaining a sense of pride for our heritage, culture and traditions,” she said. The event benefits the Light of the World Clinic, a free volunteer medical facility founded in 1989 by the late Dr. Erwin Vasquez, a passionate humanitarian and activist. Added this year in his honor is the 1st annual Erwin M.Vasquez Scholarship for a Latina student presented by Mercedes Benz of Fort Lauderdale. “We are delighted to participate in this educational endeavor to support a student,” said Tony Giordano, General Manager. In addition to Rodriguez and Fraga, the other Hispanic Women of Distinction include Rixys Alfonso of Davie, Leila Cobo of Key Biscayne, Dr. Elizabeth King of Fort Lauderdale, Liliam M. Lopez of Miami Beach, Mercedes J. Nunez of Weston, Maribel Quiala of Miami Beach, Sandra Ramon-Vilarasau of Lauderhill, Felicia Rodriguez of Jupiter, Yvonne Salas of Miramar, and Aimee Sanchez-Zadak of Davie. Canine Companions Encourage Young Readers By Julie Levin

T

hey can’t speak, can’t read, but for some reason the furry,

four-legged friends that have been visiting the Helen B. Hoffman library over the past few months are making a huge difference in the literary skills of others. The pooches are pet therapy dogs, whose calm demeanors and gentle gazes are helping dozens of struggling young readers boost their reading skills.”The children gain confidence in reading out loud to a dog that is non-judgmental. It increases their reading oral fluency,” said Lauren Gelbart, an Assistant Children’s Librarian. Dozens of young readers, ages 4-12, spent part of their summer vacation reading to the therapy dogs. While they library has had two dogs come in a few times each month in the past, they were able to arrange for dog teams from three different organizations to come in over the summer, boosting the availability to children. Most of the spots were filled nearly every single day, with youngsters ages 4-12, getting 15-minute sessions to read to the dogs. “For some of the children, it is an opportunity to interact with the dogs because they don’t have pets at home. But also for those who are struggling with reading, it gives them a confidence in being able to read out loud,” said Gelbart. The program has proven so successful that library officials plan to continue it throughout the school year. The impetus for the enhanced summer program came from Barbara Clair Kettler, “Lucy” the therapy dog from Therapy Dogs International. She is owned by Debi Lynch.

who runs the “Pawsitive Reading Corner” at Tropical Elementary School in Plantation when school is in session. Wanting to continue their work with the students, they approached the library to see if they could provide a venue for all children that visit the library. Through Share-a-Pet, Kettler works with her dog Chessie, as well as Marsha Rous and Clementine, Marcy Lewis and Oreo, and Barbara Prezioso with Buddy. According to Kessler, Michela and Cameron Gray reading with Lucy. Dennis and Myra Kolodish and their four golden retrievers also take part, along with teams from the Wags & Tales program at the Humane Society of Broward County and Therapy Dogs International. The Reading with a Dog program is free of charge. Children should be independent readers, roughly between the ages of 4-12. Parents interested in signing their children up for a session with a therapy dog should either stop by the Helen B. Hoffman Library, located at 501 North Fig Tree Lane or phone them at 954-797-2140. Life lessons, Golf and Friendship Tee Off Plantation Author’s Latest Book By Julie Levin

T

ony Rosa can still remember when his mother dropped him off

at a municipal golf course and told him he was taking part, by himself, in a junior golf tournament. He remembers his hesitancy and unease, but he signed up nonetheless and played, not fully realizing then the impact it would have on the rest of his life. “It was the first time I realized I was on my own,” recalls Rosa, a longtime Plantation resident. Rosa’s experience, along with his nearly life-long association with golf, was the stepping stone to a trio of books that use the sport as a parallel to life’s relationships and lessons. His latest book, “Birdie” is the third in the series that took Rosa nearly two years to complete. It is a coming-of-age story that focuses on a troubled teen who finds a new direction in life, thanks to the guidance of a sight-impaired golfer. “It is a book that shows that there are always opportunities to change and turn your life around before it is too late,” said Rosa. While Rosa intended the story to be a good read for nearly anyone, particularly golf fans, the stories are particularly relatable to teen age boys. It revolves around character Mark Crowe, a teen with a checkered past and unstable home life. Mark has just a few months before his 18th birthday to successfully complete a court-ordered community service project, or risk facing adult jail time. His community service is to caddie for sight-impaired golfer Vic Adano, who

16

overtime shares his experience about the ups and downs of life. The story begins to turn when Mark agrees to level out the competition in a proposed golf match by wearing a blindfold. Golf becomes their connection and the contest initiates a string of eye-opening events for Mark where he begins to appreciate how his own actions dictate his life. “Everyone has a challenge throughout their life. But it is never too late to change your ways, start over and take a second look at the direction your life is heading in,” said Rosa. “Birdie” is the last of three inter-related books. Rosa’s first book, “The Schoolboy” is a first person narrative based on Rosa’s own experience and the lessons learned Plantation Author Tony Rosa during that first junior golf tournament. The second book “Two for Tee”, delves into the friendships formed with two members of foursome he was paired with. The fourth member of the foursome was Mark Crowe, and “Birdie” is the chance to tell his story. “He was kind of a troubled kid, call him a bully if you’d like, but he had his own story as well and that’s what “Birdie” is all about,” said Rosa. Look for Birdie, and Rosa’s other books on Amazon.com and Barnesandnoble.com

Plantation Pooch is Finalist for National Award By Julie Levin

T

atiana, the hearing dog, just might be the nation’s number one “hero” dog.

The Labrador/Golden Retriever mix, who lives in Plantation with her owner, is one of eight canine finalists in the running for the American Humane Association’s annual Hero Dog Awards and she needs the community’s support to get to the top spot. Tatiana came to national attention after a live-saving effort in her Plantation home. The 3-year old pooch spotted trouble when owner Cristina Saint-Blancard began struggling for breath during a severe asthma attack. Tatiana made her way to Cristina’s mother’s room, who quickly realized her daughter was in trouble and called paramedics. They told her family Tatiana undoubtedly saved Cristina’s life.”It’s very humbling for me,” said Cristina, who lost her hearing as a teenager as result of an ear disease she developed at a young age. “I think it is great to be able to recognize Tatiana because she means the world to me and I would never be able to thank her enough for what she did. It is beyond special.” Tatiana is one of 8 dogs, chosen from 359 nationwide, who will compete in the second annual national competition which searches out and recognizes America’s Hero Dogs. Tatiana already won the Hearing Dog category after voters cast online ballots. She’ll now compete against the seven finalists from the other categories: Law Enforcement & Arson Dogs, Service Dogs, Therapy Dogs, Military Dogs, Guide Dogs, Search and Rescue Dogs, and Emerging Hero Dogs (the category for “ordinary” dogs). The public can vote for their choice up until October 5. The next day, the winning dog will be announced at the Hero Dog Awards gala at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Cristina and Tatiana plan on being there, along with her mother Teresa and sister Teresa, whom they call Teremar. The event will be broadcast Nov. 2 by the Hallmark Channel. Tatiana and Cristina were paired in 2011. Tatiana was trained by Canine Companions for Independence, a non-profit organization that provides highly trained assistance dogs to people with disabilities and to professional caregivers providing pet assisted therapy.”We of course think all of our dogs are heroes,” said Martha Johnson, a Public Relations Coordinator for the group. “But Tatiana certainly deserves to be recognized for her life-saving actions and we are thrilled for this opportunity for them.” The match has worked so well that Cristina even graduated in December from Purdue University with a master’s degree in biomedical engineering. Tatiana was of course, at her side, in cap and gown ,earning her own honorary “degree” for friendship and guidance. Regardless of how Tatiana does in the National Hero Dog competition, Cristina says it is an ideal way to touch other people’s lives by raising awareness about how wonderful dogs like Tatiana can help those with different disabilities. “People think there are only seeing eye dogs for the blind, but really there are many different kinds of service dogs. They are more than a pet, they are very much part of our lives. They are a gift,” she said. Cristina has partnered with Dogs for the Deaf as her charity partner during the competition. The public can vote for Tatiana once a day, up until October 5th. Simply go to http://www.herodogawards.org/vote/?nominee=49861768# to cast your vote.

Camp Prepares Magnet Students for First Day

ot every high school freshman gets to prepare for the first

day of school with a specialized summer camp. But when you are enrolled at South Plantation’s Environmental Science and Everglades Restoration Magnet Program, their yearly one-day summer program is indeed the best way for new students to get their feet wet. The school hosted Camp Everglades August 9, officially welcoming the 175 freshmen students who are entering the program.”We have held the camp since the beginning of the magnet 10 years ago, so this is our 11th camp. It is an orientation to the program and high school for incoming ninth graders so they feel familiar with the school on the opening day,” said Alyce Culpepper, the longtime director of the Magnet Program, who is stepping down after ten years. The new Magnet Coordinator will be environmental law attorney and professor Pamela Krauss. Twenty four upperclassmen served as counselors for the program, which ran once again under the direction of Camp Director Matt Zealey. The day began with students learning school procedure and then racing off for a scavenger hunt which was designed primarily to help them learn the layout Upperclassmen counselors help incoming freshmen of the magnet building. analyze the quality of the water from a nearby canal. Afterwards, a taste of what they had enrolled for-their first magnet project using water testing labs to analyze the water in a nearby canal. More than 425 students applied for the 175 open magnet spots. The freshmen come from 25 different middle and private schools throughout Broward County, so a program like Camp A scavenger hunt helped students find different locations around the school. Everglades is essential to team building.”Students coming from our feeder schools such as Seminole and New River Middle already know others in the school. But those coming from private school or a distant middle school don’t know anyone really, so they appreciate the camp,” said Culpepper. To help break the ice, the students took part in a team building exercise, relying on each other through a low ropes course. At the end of the day, they set academic goals for their first year of high school. Parents joined in later for a dessert reception so they, too, could meet the teachers. “Our parent group, Fans of the Everglades Restoration Magnet hosted the reception. Our parent volunteers are awesome - we could not do what we do without their help,” Culpepper said. The Environmental Science and Everglades Restoration program was named a 2012 Merit School of Excellence by the Magnet Schools of America organization. Students in the program are also the reigning five-time Champions of the Fairchild Challenge.

New Flag Football Youth League Hopes to Score with Kids and Parents

Is Your Home Really Protected?

By Julie Levin

R

aising two young children, Andi and David Saifman have seen

their share of youth sports. What they saw at some of the leagues didn’t always make them feel good that their children were in an environment where they could grown and learn, much less have fun. More athletically skilled children would get a lion’s share of the playing time, while others youngsters rode the bench. “You could see how the kids get very discouraged,” said David. So the longtime Plantation residents decided to take a little bit of the good they learned from each league and create their own youth league called South Florida Youth Athletics. Going by the slogan “Youth Sports Done Right”, the league is an NFL youth flag football program for boys and girls ages 5-15. It is designed to provide a safe environment, where everyone plays regardless of skill level. “Our goal is to help teach the fundamentals of sports – and good sportsmanship – on the field and in life,” said Andi. It’s being run in partnership with the flag program of NFL Play 60, Andi and David Saifman, with children Mia and Evan the National Football League’s campaign aimed at encouraging kids to be active for 60 minutes a day in order to reverse childhood obesity. To introduce the league to the community, South Florida Youth Athletics is hosting a kick-off September 8, which also is the first day of their new season. They are hoping as many as 200 kids come out and they encourage even those not enrolled to come out and see what the league is all about. It will be modeled after an NFL combine, where the kids will learn running and passing drills and get plenty of positive reinforcement from NFL alumni expected to be in attendance. Should the league fill up, they are already planning a winter league. Games will be held on Saturdays, with one-hour practices before game time. The league is designed to boost the physical and emotional development of local youths by promoting team work and the teaching of new skills. A Player of the Week will be selected from each division based on good sportsmanship and teamwork. They will receive a “Player of the Week” medal and also be featured on the SFYA web site. At the end of the season, all participants will be included in an award ceremony. Coaches will be volunteers to start and will be led by the Saifmans. David has many years of playing sports up through the collegiate level as well as numerous years of coaching youth sports. He has also worked in a professional sports capacity with the NFL and MLB for over 19 years. Andi also has many years of experience in playing and coaching sports. “We are taking all of the positives of youth sports and putting it on a platform. It’s something we are very passionate about and want to share with other families,” David said.

The kick-off will begin at 9 a.m. The fall season begins September 8 and all games will be played on Saturdays at the Soref JCC at 6501 West Sunrise Boulevard in Plantation. There will be a one-hour practice before each game. The first week will concentrate on skills training events, as well as a team orientation and practice. Registration fee is $135 for the 8-week season. For more information on South Florida Youth Athletics, email David Saifman at dave@SFLYouthAthletics.com or visit their website at www. Food Allergies? Why Suffer? By: Dr. David S. Popkin- Quantum Wellness Center

F

ood allergies occur when your immune system

makes a mistake. Normally, your immune system protects you from germs and disease. It does this by making antibodies that help you fight off bacteria, viruses, and other tiny organisms that can make you sick. But if you have a food allergy, your immune system mistakenly treats something in a certain food as if it’s really dangerous to you. The same sort of thing happens with any allergy, whether it’s a medicine (like penicillin), pollen in the air (from flowers and trees), or a food, like peanuts. So the thing itself isn’t harmful, but the way your body reacts to it is. If a kid with peanut allergy would have eaten that peanut-topped brownie, here’s what would happen. Antibodies to something in the food would cause mast cells (a type of immune system cell in the body) to release chemicals into the bloodstream. One of these chemicals is histamine The histamine then causes symptoms that affect a person’s eyes, nose, throat, respiratory system, skin, and digestive system. A person with a food allergy could have a mild reaction - or it could be more severe. An allergic reaction could happen right away or a few hours after the person eats it. Some of the first signs that a person may be having an allergic reaction could be a runny nose, an itchy skin rash such as hives, or a tingling in the tongue or lips. Other signs include: ▸  tightness in the throat ▸ hoarse voice ▸  wheezing ▸ cough ▸  nausea ▸ vomiting ▸  stomach pain ▸ diarrhea

In the most serious cases, a food allergy can cause anaphylaxis. This is a sudden, severe allergic reaction in which several problems occur all at once and can involve the skin, breathing, digestion, the heart, and blood vessels. A person’s blood pressure can drop, breathing tubes can narrow and the tongue can swell. People at risk for this kind of a reaction have to be very careful and need a plan for handling emergencies, when they might need to get special medicine to stop these symptoms from getting worse. The most common food allergies are: ▸▸ Milk allergy ▸ Egg allergy ▸▸ Peanut allergy ▸ Tree nut allergy ▸▸ Seafood allergy ▸ Shellfish allergy ▸▸ Soy allergy ▸ Wheat allergy N.A.E.T. stands for Nambudripad’s Allergy Elimination Technique. There are no needles, shots or medication. The treatment is painless, totally safe for babies, infants, children and adults and the results are immediate. Using NAET I have found that individuals with food allergies and sensitivities feel incredible relief and wellness when we clear them of their allergic foods. By eliminating the allergies, their problems resolve no matter how long they have had it. In addition we have found that individuals that have had problems losing weight or have been overweight start losing and maintaining their normal ideal weight very easily once the food allergies are treated using this amazing system. Live a normal, symptom-free life WITHOUT the use of avoidance, pills or shots

At the age of 5 years old, my son, Scottie, was unable to attend birthday parties, could not participate in sporting events, and felt left out of enjoying his childhood due to chronic illnesses of food and environmental factors. Since he began his treatments with Dr. Popkin he is enjoying a healthy asthmafree childhood and can participate in sports. The best news is, that for the first time, he can go to camp and enjoy foods without having allergic reactions. No longer needing to live on a special diet has allowed me and my family to finally enjoy life. To me, this is a miracle! I am so thankful for finding Dr. Popkin and to experience NAET, a natural method for eliminating allergy symptoms. - Susan G.

Understanding Sleep Apnea By Wendy S. Levenson EdD, RN, Director of Education – Westside Regional Medical Center

S

leep apnea is a very common disorder that causes you to stop

breathing briefly while you sleep. More than 12 million Americans have sleep apnea, which can go unnoticed but can cause serious health problems if not treated. There are three types of sleep apnea—obstructive, central, and complex sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea is caused when your airways become narrowed or blocked. This occurs during sleep when the muscles at the back of your throat relax causing the soft tissue to obstruct or block your airways. Once the obstruction has occurred your oxygen levels are lowered and your brain senses this inability to breathe, your body awakens briefly so that normal breathing can resume. In most cases you won’t even notice you’ve been awake multiple times during the night due to an obstruction as you are only awake for a few seconds at most. These sleep disruptions can happen hundreds of times during the night and makes it impossible for your body to reach a restful stage of sleep. Central sleep apnea is caused when your brain fails to send signals to the muscles that regulate your breathing. This causes you to awaken with shortness of breath and you may find it hard to get back to sleep, because you are usually awake for longer periods of time when you suffer from central sleep apnea you are more likely to remember these sleep interruptions. Complex sleep apnea is caused when you have a combination of both central and obstructive sleep apnea. This means that your airways can often become blocked or narrowed and your brain can also fail to send signals to your breathing muscles.

Symptoms of Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is an ongoing condition which generally results in poor sleep quality. Despite the cause of sleep apnea the symptoms are largely the same. The most common symptoms are as follows: ▸▸ Loud snoring ▸▸ Difficulty staying asleep ▸▸ Waking up with a dry or sore throat ▸▸ Morning headaches ▸▸ Excessive tiredness during the day ▸▸ Cessations or pauses of breathing while asleep ▸▸ Frequent need to urinate at night ▸▸ Memory or learning problems & not being able to concentrate – most common in young children. ▸▸ Irritability, depression, mood swings or personality changes ▸▸ Obstructive sleep apnea is treated by trying to restore regular breathing during sleep by ensuring your airways are unable to become blocked while sleeping. ▸▸ Central sleep apnea is treated by trying to address the underlying medical problems which can cause central sleep apnea. ▸▸ Complex sleep apnea is treated by using a combination of methods used in both central & obstructive apnea. For a free referral to a primary care physician in the area, contact Westside Regional Medical Center’s toll-free physician referral and health information line at 1-800-618-2631.

New Loan Modification Program for Homeowners By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

O

FREE DVD

n June 1, 2012, new HAMP guidelines took effect that may give

financially pressed homeowners a fresh opportunity to qualify for a loan modification. HAMP stands for the Home Affordable Modification Program, a government initiative to encourage lenders to allow loan modifications with reduced mortgage payments. The new guidelines are known as HAMP Tier 2 and here is a summary of the benefits: Lower Debt-to-Income Limits The new guidelines allow borrowers to lower their monthly mortgage payment to as little as 25 percent of their gross monthly income. Previously, borrowers could not qualify for HAMP unless their total mortgage payment was more than 31 percent of their gross monthly income. Broader Debt Guidelines The new rules also take into account more types of debt in evaluating a borrower’s financial burden, such as such as second mortgages, medical bills, etc. The old guidelines focused solely on what a borrower was paying for their primary mortgage. Rental Properties Eligible One of the biggest changes is that the HAMP Tier 2 program is now open to landlords who are struggling to keep up with mortgage payments on rental properties. Properties need not be occupied to qualify, and a single borrower can qualify to obtain loan modifications on up to three properties under the program. Repeat Modifications Allowed It used to be that you only had one shot at a HAMP loan modification. If you couldn’t keep up with your payments, you could not reapply for a new modification. Under the new Tier 2 guidelines, borrowers who defaulted on a permanent or trial HAMP loan modification can apply for a new one, provided they’ve been out of the program for at least 12 months. Minimum 10 Percent Reduction Under the new rules, all loan modifications performed under HAMP must reduce a borrower’s monthly mortgage payments by at least 10 percent. Principal Reductions Encouraged New incentives are being provided to encourage lenders to allow principal reductions on mortgages where borrowers owe more than the home is worth. Navigating through the murky waters of this new HAMP Tier 2 program is frustrating, and even riskier when there is a pending mortgage foreclosure which could result in the loss of your home prior to completing the loan modification. If you would like an attorney from the Arcia Law Firm to review your case in detail to determine the best course of action, including a modification under the new HAMP Tier 2 guidelines, please call 1-800-770-7102 or visit us online at www.arcialawfirm.com to schedule your FREE initial consultation. The Arcia Law Firm recently released a consumer DVD entitled “Fight For Your Home,” which is available for purchase at www.arcialawfirm.com. Anyone that schedules a consultation with The Arcia Law Firm, will receive a FREE copy of this DVD during the appointment. The Arcia Law Firm has represented hundreds of homeowners in our community in foreclosure defense and bankruptcy protection matters over the last 15 years. Supreme Court Upholds Health Care Law By Frank Gutta, CPA,PFS

I

n a landmark decision, the U.S. Supreme Court

generally upheld the constitutionality of the controversial 2010 health care law. In addition to preserving mandates for health insurance coverage, certain tax provisions will take effect as scheduled in 2013, barring any subsequent legislation. Here’s a summary of the main tax changes for 2013. Medicare surtaxes: The health care law includes the following two Medicare surtaxes that could affect individual taxpayers: ▸▸ A 3.8% surtax on the lesser of annual net investment income or the amount by which modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) exceeds $200,000 ($250,000 for married couples). “Net investment income” includes interest, dividends, royalties, rents, gains from dispositions of property and income from passive activities, but not tax-free interest or distributions from qualified retirement plans and IRAs. ▸▸ A 0.9% surtax on earned income (e.g., wages) exceeding $200,000 ($250,000 for married couples). Flexible spending accounts: Currently, there’s a $5,000 limit on pre-tax contributions to a flexible spending account (FSA) used for dependent care expenses, but there’s no such limit on health care FSAs. The law caps health care FSA contributions at $2,500 starting in 2013. Medical deductions: For 2012, you may deduct unreimbursed medical expenses in excess of 7.5% of your adjusted gross income (AGI). The law raises this AGI floor in 2013 to 10% for taxpayers under age 65. Other tax-related provisions in the law were also upheld by the Supreme Court. For

instance, an individual will generally have to obtain “minimum essential health insurance coverage” or pay a nondeductible penalty, beginning in 2014. Another provision, which took effect in 2010, allows a qualified small business to claim a tax credit for part or all of the cost of providing health insurance. This remains a complex area of the tax law. Contact us regarding your personal circumstances and the effect the Supreme Court ruling could have on your taxes. Frank Gutta & Co. A Healthy, Beautiful Smile At Any Age! Dr. Felipe Norena

I

s orthodontic treatment effective for adults?

Yes. Healthy teeth can be moved at any age. Many orthodontic problems can be corrected as easily for adults as for children. Orthodontic forces move teeth in the same way for both adults and children. Do appliances have to show? Many options are available today to minimize the appearance of braces. Today’s appliances are smaller and sleeker, and some are next-to-invisible. Your orthodontist can advise you as to what options are recommended for your particular needs. Will orthodontic treatment fit my lifestyle? You can do almost anything during orthodontic treatment –sing, play a musical instrument, dine out, kiss, and even have your picture taken. Some adjustments will be necessary, but, if you’re like the vast majority of adult patients, you’ll adjust quickly. New techniques and materials today have made wearing braces more comfortable than ever. Am I a good fit for orthodontic treatment? Consulting an orthodontist can help to determine if you can benefit from treatment. After carefully analyzing the nature of your needed correction, your orthodontist will recommend the best course of treatment for improving your smile. I’m missing some teeth. Can orthodontic treatment improve my bite? Orthodontic treatment can create or hold space to replace missing teeth. The orthodontist will work with the dentist or dental specialist who will provide bridges or implants so that the patient achieves the best result. I’ve been treated from gum disease. Can my teeth be straightened? Your orthodontist will consult with your dentist and/or periodontist about the health of your gums. If you are a candidate for orthodontic treatment, you will continue regular supervision with your dentist and periodontist. In many cases, tooth alignment can improve the health of the gums.

It’s Never Too Late To Be Your Best

You’re never too old to benefit from orthodontic treatment. Today, adults make up about one in every five orthodontic patients. Here is why: ▸▸ Orthodontic treatment can help correct crooked teeth or spaces that you’ve been self-conscious about for years. It can give you the confidence and pride that come with straight teeth and a great smile. ▸▸ Also, leaving misaligned teeth untreated may lead to other dental problems such as tooth decay and gum disease, as well as abnormal wearing of tooth surfaces and difficulty in chewing. ▸▸ Advances in orthodontics have made treatment more comfortable and more successful than ever for people of all ages. Orthodontics work with other dental practitioners – general dentist, periodontics, prosthodontics, oral surgeons – to provide a comprehensive approach to your dental health. Norena Orthodontics is located in the northeast corner of Sunrise Blvd and Nob Hill Road. Drs Felipe and Ana Maria Norena have a combined orthodontic experience of 35 years. Dr. Felipe received his orthodontic degree from Saint Louis University and Dr. Ana Maria graduated from the Orthodontic program at Nova Southeastern University. They are both members of the American Association of Orthodontics. They are open Monday - Friday from 9 a..m. to 5 p.m. Call them at 954-474-1600 for an appointment.

He goes into a frenzy at the sight or smell of bacon and likes looking out the front window of our home to see who’s coming up the drive He hates vacuum cleaners.
