Autumn Has Arrived
W
hile our friends and family up north may
be noticing a nip in the air, it’s still hot and humid here in the Sunshine State. But, there’s no mistaking that autumn has arrived. Here in South Florida, fall means football. Whether your weekends are spent cheering on your children from the sidelines or watching your favorite teams on TV, there’s a lot of great action taking place on the gridiron. Another telltale sign that autumn has arrived is the appearance of Halloween merchandise. The store shelves are stocked with candy and costumes, and pumpkin patches are popping up in empty lots everywhere. In a few short weeks, the streets will be filled with pint-sized super-heroes and fairy tale princesses out trick-ortreating. Don’t forget to take pictures of your little ones as these are the magical memories that last a lifetime. Have a happy and safe Halloween everyone!

Nursery and Farmer’s Market’s 4th Annual Fall Harvest Festival has become a tradition for South Florida residents, from ages 2 to 92. The five-acre nursery in Davie is completely decorated for the fall season. Every weekend in October features a variety of fun and educational activities for the entire family. “Fall is a great time for family, fun, and gardening,” said Owner/President, Jim Dezell. “We’ve had a great turnout in the past and we expect this year’s Festival to be the biggest and best one yet.” The Festival has one of the largest pumpkin patches in South Florida. Purchase a pumpkin and then decorate it in the Paint-A-Pumpkin activity area. Take a hayride on a horse-drawn carriage or have your child’s face painted by the popular Carly Sue. Come hungry and sample the pulled pork, chicken and ribs at the Southern Swamp Barbecue. Stop by the Farmer’s Market for a boxed lunch. Enjoy fresh fruit smoothies and frozen lemonade from the Juice Bar or ice cream and other items from the Creamery & Sweet Shop. Purchase some traditional fall items from the Harvest Market, such as hay bales, corn stalks, gourds, Indian corn, scare crows, candied apples, cider and roasted corn. She Can Dance! By Julie Levin
S
he came oh-so close. Tiffany Maher, the
19-year old dancer from Plantation made it to the finals of the hit show “So You Think You Can Dance” recently, only to come just a little bit shy of the title. An audience of millions tuned in September 18th to see Eliana Girard of West Palm Beach be named America’s favorite female dancer on the Fox television program. Chehon Wespi-Tschopp of Switzerland won the men’s title. For Maher, a lifelong Plantation resident, simply being on the show was nothing short of a dream come true. “It’s crazy to watch yourself perform on national television. I’ve been watching the show since season one and to be chosen to be a part of this incredible experience is amazing,” Maher said. Maher has deep roots in Plantation. She was the 2010 salutatorian of her class at South Plantation, where she was a student in the school’s Environmental Magnet Program. She was also involved in DECA, cheerleading and the school’s chapter of the National Honor Society. Before attending South Plantation, she was a student at Plantation Middle School, Central Park Elementary and Development Pre-School and Kindergarten. Her mother, Marla is a 5th grade teacher at Fox Trail Elementary School and her father, Brian, is a school resource officer at West

Broward High School. She began dancing at 3 years old at Central Park and went on to study at the Dance FX studio in Sunrise. She says dance is her passion and being on the show has been a true learning experience, particularly working with some of the best in the dance choreography world. “I’ve watched this show and seen their work. I’ve grown up dreaming about learning from them,” she said. Before the show, Tiffany also had small roles in the films “Rock of Ages” and “Step Up Revolution”. She’s also enrolled in online classes at the University of Central Florida, where she is studying public affairs. She hopes to dance for as long as she can, and one day run her own studio. By making the top ten, Maher will take part in a 30-city “So You Think You can Dance” national dance tour which includes a December 5th appearance at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. Even without the title, she was thrilled with the chance just to be on the show. “It’s national television. It’s huge. I am making so many connections and friends,” she said.

Luncheon Focuses on Ending Dating Abuse By Julie Levin
W
hile there will be food, fashion and shopping, the goal
behind an upcoming annual luncheon will be to help put the brakes on a growing and unsettling problem in our community. The Plantationbased JFS KOLOT Coalition will hold its seventh annual Luncheon and Fashion Show October 28 to raise awareness about domestic abuse in the Jewish community. The event is called Breaking the Silence - Dating Abuse: It’s not Love. “The annual KOLOT event is the lifeline for these families, raising the funds to help save lives. By attending the event, sponsoring, advertising or donating, the community can demonstrate that abuse is never acceptable and that together we can help make difference,” said Randee Lefkow, JFS KOLOT chairperson. The event is a chance for organizers to rally people of all ages as allies in ending all forms of abuse. This year, the luncheon is focusing for the first time on dating abuse, which experts say has one of highest rates of abuse. According to the group Futures Without Violence, approximately one in three adolescent girls in the United States is a victim of physical, emotional or verbal abuse from a dating partner. This year’s guest speaker is a JFS client who will tell her miraculous story of survival and recovery after being abused by her boyfriend. At the event, KOLOT will introduce its new “Teen Relationship Test” – a palm sized card with a checklist of signs of an unhealthy relationship and the JFS confidential 24/7 phone number to call for help. Since 1999, JFS KOLOT has brought together organizations and individuals dedicated to raising awareness, promoting education and increasing services for victims of domestic abuse in the Jewish community. The JFS Domestic Abuse Program, which is currently helping close to 60 women and 87 children, provides a 24/7 Crisis Line, counseling, case management, support groups, and financial assistance. The luncheon event got its
start when more abused women in the Jewish community began coming forward for services. “The needs are tremendous for abused people and their children as they try to begin anew – from the essentials of a new place to live, daily food, and household goods to education, employment and legal assistance,” said Lefkow. Community leaders, Hal & Lois Herman, will receive the (L-R) Randee Lefkow, JFS KOLOT Chairperson; Esther Shacket, Jewish Women’s Foundation founder prestigious 2012 Ending Abuse Award for their outstanding commitment to children impacted by domestic abuse. Corrine Cott, was last year’s Ending Abuse Award recipient and is one of this year’s event leaders. “Last year’s event was a record breaking success, largely in part to the strong survivors who continue to stand up and speak out about their abuse,” said Cott. Breaking the Silence - Dating Abuse: It’s not Love will be held October 28 at The Signature Grand, at 6900 State Road 84 in Davie. The event begins at 10:30 a.m. with a shopping boutique, as well as a silent auction and raffle prizes. The luncheon will begin at 12:30 p.m. Tickets are $90 per person or $118 with 25 raffle tickets; $36 for children under 13. Golf Tourney Tees Off for Worthy Cause By Julie Levin

olfers have the chance this month to enjoy a morning on the
links, while helping to support children in need in our state. The Broward County Young Lawyers Section, or YLS, is hosting its 25th Annual Charity Golf Tournament. Set for October 13 at the Jacaranda Golf Club, the tournament will benefit Florida’s Children First, a statewide children’s advocacy organization. “Because we are the Young Lawyers, we sometimes choose a charity that deals with children or youth. Florida’s Children First deals specifically with at-risk children in the foster care system and it really is a great cause to be able to raise money for,” said Jeff Wank, the chairman of the tournament.
Wank is once again expecting a sold-out field of 144 golfers to take to the course for the tournament. The field is open to golfers of all ability and participants will have the chance to take part in a 4-person scramble, silent auction, breakfast, unlimited beverages, awards luncheon and reception. Each year, tournament organizers usually choose a different charity. This time they chose Florida’s Children First for a second straight year because of the success of last year’s event, which brought in $30,000. Organizers say 100% of the net proceeds from the tournament will go directly to FCF to specifically benefit the Tracey McPharlin Pro Bono Initiative and the Broward Chapter of Florida Youth Shine. “Florida’s Children First really provides a voice for children in foster care and those aging out of the system and helps them out in not only providing for things they need, but also fighting for their rights in Tallahassee,” said Wank. The Young Lawyers Section of the Broward Bar is comprised of attorneys who are 36 years of age, or younger, or have been practicing for less than five years. Throughout the year, the group holds seminars and events to educate young lawyers on current issues and professionalism. They also host charitable events for the community, including the golf tournament which is their biggest fundraiser. The tournament will also include a hole in one contest, with a chance to win a 2012 G37 Convertible from Warren Henry Infiniti. Other prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place Foursomes, as well as awards for Longest Drive, Closest-to-Pin and Straightest Drive. The tournament will be held October 13 at Jacaranda Golf Club, located at 9200 West Broward Boulevard in Plantation. Check in time is 6:30 a.m. and there is a 8:00 a.m. shotgun start. Foursomes are $400.00; Individual Golfers are $100.00. Non-golfers can register for lunch only for $30.00. Participants will receive a complimentary continental breakfast, range balls, unlimited cold beverages during play, lunch to follow the play, as well goodie bags and other raffle prizes. Annual Barbecue Event Heats up for its 56th Year By Julie Levin

p to 6,000 people are once again expected to turn out for an
annual city event, that promises great food for a good cause. The Plantation Volunteer Fire Association’s 56th Annual Barbecue will be held November 4 at Pine Island Park. Organizers say it is still one of the most popular city events around. “We hope everyone comes out and has a great time,” said Jon Hatch, the Plantation EMT/Firefighter who chairs the yearly event. The barbecue is an annual fundraising event that features bounce houses, carnival games, firefighting equipment, live music and most importantly, great barbecue served up by the city’s firefighters. The highlight of the menu is chicken and ribs, doused with the “secret sauce” made famous by the late Mayor Frank Veltri. Since the early days of the event, Veltri, who also served as the event’s head chef for 50 years, would whip up the sauce in the kitchen of his home, keeping the recipe under lock and key. After the Mayor passed in 2006, the recipe and the title of head chef was turned over to Firefighter/ Head Chef Barry Stearns, who is keeping the tasty tradition going. In addition to the 1,700 to 2,000 pounds of chicken and The "secret sauce" was created by the ribs, the meal is rounded out late Frank Veltri, who served as head chef of the barbecue until its 50th year. by12 five-gallon buckets of cole

Ticket purchase letters to 52,000 homes and businesses were mailed out in September so residents could pre-order meals at $10 per adult or $5 per child. Plant Affair Ready to Set New Roots at Heritage Park By Julie Levin

The Broward County Plant Affair will return to Heritage Park with a little something green for just about anyone. “It is a beautiful, fun day and we really have a little of everything,” promises Betty Cobb, longtime Plantation resident and the organizer of the Plant Affair. The two- day event will be held at the park, located at 1100 South Fig Tree Lane, Saturday and Sunday, October 27 and 28. There will be several dozen vendors on hand offering locally grown plants, vines and trees, supplies and more. Cobb says because they are locally grown, they have already adapted to the South Florida climate.”The diversity of the South Florida grown plants makes it so beautiful for gardeners, because they are getting plants acclimated to our climate,” said Cobb. There will also be plenty of plant professionals on hand who can answer any greenery related questions. Guests will find a wide array of plants including bougainvilleas, orchids, crotons, bonsai, begonias, fruit trees and vegetables. Dreams of Hoop Glory By Julie Levin

ozens of Plantation youngsters
of all ages turned out recently to show off their best jump shots , dunks and 3-point moves. The City of Plantation held its Youth Hot Shot Basketball Tournament September 7 in the Central Park Gymnasium. Participants were grouped into different age categories and squared off against each other on the court to see who could sink the most shots in a timed period from different numbered spots on the floor. Kids of all skill levels took to the court, some who were playing for the first time, to others who play on youth leagues. Justin Conner McClain was the reigning champion in last year’s 9-10 year old category, and had dreams of sinking the competition yet again. “I go for the “1’s”, which are the easiest shot to make,” he explained. Every participant came away with a Miami Heat Championship Pennant and certificate. Winners in each category took home a Miami Heat jersey.

Pediatric Orthopedics One of Many Specialties Offered at the Children’s Center at Plantation General Hospital By Julie Levin
L
ike any seven-year old, Bella Fiorio loves to go outside, play
on the swings and ride her bicycle. Thanks to the team of Pediatric Orthopedic Specialists at Plantation General Hospital, little Bella is able to do just that now. Three months ago, doctors performed an innovative surgical procedure that will help Bella cope with Osteogenesis Imperfecta, a genetic disorder characterized by fragile bones that break easily. “The surgery allows her to be a little girl and have fun, without being too cautious,” said mom Courtney Fiorio. “It has meant freedom for her.” The surgery was performed at Plantation General Hospital by Dr. Peter Romano, a Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon based in Plantation. He implanted the FassierDuval Telescopic IM Rod System in Bella’s left femur, which is designed to prevent and stabilize fractures, as well as correct deformities in long bones while there is growth. “Not only does it straighten the bone, If she falls or something happens, she has an internal splint to give the bone stability and they are much less prone to Bella Fiorio and Dr. Peter Romano break. Also, if they do break, the rod is already in so it keeps the bone straight,” said Dr. Romano. The innovative new rod is essential for Bella, who has suffered more than two dozen fractures, including 17 fractures to her femurs alone since she was born. In the past, doctors had to place her in a full body cast from her chest to her toes to help her heal. Now just three months after surgery, the little girl who loves the pop group “One Direction” is able to dance to her favorite band and is walking on her own.”She was able to walk into school this year without any assistance. That’s a milestone for her,” said Courtney. According to the Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation, Osteogenesis Imperfecta, also known as “ OI” or “brittle bone disease”, causes a genetic mutation of the collagen gene. A person is born with the disorder and is affected throughout his or her lifetime. While those with a mild form of Osteogenesis Imperfecta may experience only a few fractures, those with the severe forms may have hundreds in a lifetime. Dr. Romano says the advanced design of the system they used with Bella offers more benefits than with more conventional rods. It provides a longer telescopic range, which means it will grow as Bella does. “As the bone grows, the two anchors on either end grow away from each other,” he said. In addition, it favors bone and joint preservation, and decreases tissue trauma and blood loss during surgery. The new system is implanted through just one small incision by the hip, which made for a faster recovery. “This system has been around ten years, which

is relatively young, and is seen as the leading system in terms of how well it works and the engineering behind it,” said Dr. Romano. With her daughter up and walking with a renewed sense of confidence, mom Courtney gives full credit to Dr. Romano and the medical team at Plantation General Hospital. “Dr. Romano is so compassionate, intelligent, skilled and really takes his time explaining everything. New Coordinator for South Plantation Magnet Program By Julie Levin
F
or the first time in its
decade-long history, South Plantation’s renowned Environmental Science and Everglades Restoration Magnet Program is being led by a new coordinator. Environmental law attorney and professor Pamela Krauss is now at the helm of the program after taking over for longtime coordinator Alyce Culpeper, who led the program for the first ten years. While Krauss may be new to the administrative position, she is a familiar face to both students and staff, having taught within the program for many years.”It’s been a bit of a challenge, but I think change sometime is good for personal growth,” said Krauss, who Pam Krauss lives in Plantation. South Plantation’s Environmental Science and Everglades Restoration program is a national Magnet School of Excellence. The program was created to offer students from all over the county in-depth study of environmental sciences, and the Everglades. “My goal at this point would be to continue offering students a very unique program and to fortify the academic rigor of the program,” said Krauss. Krauss is extremely well-versed in the program’s curriculum. She has been with the magnet for nine years teaching Botany, Environmental Law, Research 3-4: Sampling and Analysis of the Upper K-O-E, and Research 1-2: An Overview of the Everglades. The only drawback to her new position-- less time with the students in the classroom. This year, she’ll only be teaching senior classes to accommodate her administrative duties, which have already presented challenges early in the school year. “There have been issues relating to transportation, which have a profound effect on a magnet program. Also, as result of some district level decisions, there have been some pretty challenging scheduling issues,” said Krauss. Krauss brings an impressive resume to the post. She led the school to five consecutive Fairchild Challenge Championship titles, won Florida’s Serve to Preserve Green School Educator award and her botany course was a state finalist for the classroom honor. The former Broward County Environmental Educator of the Year, also won the City of Plantation’s P.L.A.N.T. (Plantation Landscape Award for Nurturing our Town) honor. Her students have created and maintain 12 gardens at the school and at Jack Carter Harmony Park. Her colleagues give her high marks. “Mrs. Krauss will bring years of unique life experiences to the role of Magnet Coordinator,” said South Plantation Principal David Basile. “The program and the school will benefit greatly from her leadership.” Krauss also knows the Magnet Program on a personal level, having sent both of her children through the program. Son Daniel recently graduated from Northwestern University, and daughter Amanda is a senior at Northwestern. In her free time, Krauss spends time with husband Eric and stays true to her botanist background, enjoying gardening, plants and the outdoors.

ell me if this sounds familiar: your child begins
to break out in a skin rash, and he or she can’t stop scratching. Ugh, it drives you crazy. Then you start to itch and scratch just like they are. Let’s say they do get better, now you feel confident enough to stop the medication causing your symptoms to come back. What should you do? Eczema is a common problem in children and is possibly a food allergy until proven otherwise. Let’s go over some facts: The problem often appears on the face as patches of reddish, scaling skin. As eczema worsens, the skin becomes more itchy, red, thickened, and grooved, and may blister, weep, and crack. The typical distribution of eczema is on the face, behind the ears, on the fronts of the elbows, the backs of the knees, the hands, neck, and trunk. ▸▸ The neck may show what looks like a (dirty neck). ▸▸ Hands may be dry and thickened. The face is less frequently affected. ▸▸ Children with eczema often develop other problems with allergies and can
progress to more serious conditions like asthma, sinusitis, infections, joint pain, and arthritis. In a double-blind food challenge of 320 children with eczema a food allergy was present in 64% of the patients. Allergies occur when your immune system makes a mistake. Bankruptcy Law Changes Make It Easier to Wipe Out Second Mortgages By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

ntil recently, the only way a homeowner could wipe out a
second mortgage or line of credit on his/her home was through the use of a Chapter 13 bankruptcy petition and plan that may require monthly payments for as long as 60 months. However, now a Homeowner may also wipe out second mortgages and lines of credit through a Chapter 7 bankruptcy which does not require monthly payments. According to an important bankruptcy appellate court decision, a homeowner who has taken out a second mortgage or line of credit against their home would be able to extinguish that lien by filing a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, and demonstrating that the amount owed on the first mortgage exceeds the value of the property. When a judge removes mortgage liens from a property during bankruptcy proceedings it is referred to as “lien stripping.” Bankruptcy courts must now follow a “bright line” rule in all Chapter 7 cases, which makes a second mortgage totally unsecured if the first mortgage exceeds the value of the personal residence. To qualify, the court will require proof that the home is appraised for less than the value of the first mortgage, which can be established through a certified property appraisal that is accepted by the court. In an environment where home prices in most markets have fallen at least 40% or more, many South Florida homeowners qualify for this option, and should take full advantage of this major change in bankruptcy law. There are several key benefits from this critical change in bankruptcy law for the homeowner stifled with debt. First, the time required to complete a Chapter 7 bankruptcy and get a “fresh start” can be as little as four months, whereas a Chapter 13 bankruptcy case may take as long as five (5) years. Second, the costs and fees of a Chapter 7 bankruptcy is only a fraction of those associated with a Chapter 13 plan and petition. Third, unlike a Chapter 13, a Chapter 7 bankruptcy allows you to wipe out an unlimited amount of credit card and other unsecured debt, like medical debt and outstanding mortgage debt from a prior short sale or foreclosure. Most importantly, none of your creditors will be able to contact you, harass you with annoying phone calls, or proceed with any foreclosure during the bankruptcy protection period. The “baby boomers,” Americans born between 1946 and 1964, are moving like a wave into their fifties and sixties. Unfortunately, many of them are facing dual financial pressures. RETIREMENT - You may have to rethink your retirement target age in light of other financial demands like college tuition and care for elderly parents. Working longer can have distinct benefits. Besides funding an accustomed lifestyle for a few more
years, working longer and leaving your retirement accounts intact will give the funds more time to grow. EDUCATION - If your child is still young, start saving early and invest for growth. If your child is ready to start college but isn’t financially prepared, consider letting him or her finance a portion of the cost by working or obtaining loans. College-age kids have their working lives ahead of them and can use their future income to repay loans. PARENTS - For many, helping to pay for the high cost of a parent’s long-term care is a priority. A year in a nursing home can cost $30,000 or more. he term osteoporosis literally means porous bone. The disease
often develops unnoticed over many years, with no symptoms or discomfort until a fracture occurs. Osteoporosis often causes a loss of height and a severely rounded upper back. One in two women and one in four men older than 50 years will sustain bone fractures caused by osteoporosis. Many of these are painful fractures of the hip, spine, wrist, arm, and leg, which often occur as a result of a fall. However, performing even simple household tasks can result in a fracture of the spine if the bones have been weakened by osteoporosis. Doctors do not know the exact medical causes of osteoporosis, but they have identified many of the major factors that can lead to the disease. Aging - Everyone loses bone with age. After 35 years of age, the body builds less new bone to replace the loss of old bone. In general, the older you are, the lower your total bone mass and the greater your risk for osteoporosis. Heredity - A family history of fractures; a small, slender body build; fair skin; and Caucasian or Asian ethnicity can increase the risk for osteoporosis. Heredity also may help explain why some people develop osteoporosis early in life. Nutrition and Lifestyle - Poor nutrition, including a low calcium diet, low body weight, and a sedentary lifestyle have been linked to osteoporosis, as have smoking and excessive alcohol use. A drop in estrogen in women at the time of menopause and a drop in testosterone in men is a leading cause of bone loss. Other causes of bone loss include:
▸▸ Being confined to a bed ▸▸ Certain medical conditions ▸▸ Taking certain medications Other risk factors include: ▸▸ Absence of menstrual periods for long periods of time ▸▸ A family history of osteoporosis ▸▸ Drinking a large amount of alcohol ▸▸ Smoking To prevent osteoporosis, slow its progression, and protect yourself from fractures you should include adequate amounts of calcium and Vitamin D in your diet and exercise regularly. Like muscles, bones need exercise to stay strong. No matter what your age, exercise can help minimize bone loss while providing many additional health benefits. Doctors believe that a program of moderate, regular exercise (3 to 4 times a week) is effective for the prevention and management of osteoporosis. Weight-bearing exercises such as walking, jogging, hiking, climbing stairs, dancing, treadmill exercises, and weight lifting are probably best. The diagnosis of osteoporosis is usually made by your doctor using a combination of a complete medical history and physical examination, skeletal x-rays, bone densitometry, and specialized laboratory tests.
