Getting into the Holiday Spirit
I
t is hard to believe, but winter is at our door. While we gener-
ally do not get the snow flakes or the frosty winter temperatures, we do get the holiday season. While the upcoming holidays may have different meanings for many of our readers due to their diverse cultural backgrounds and religious beliefs, for all of us it should be a time to reflect on the year gone by. It’s the season to gauge our own conduct. Have we made enough time for our children? Have we reached out to our neighbors to lend a helping hand to those in need? Have we spent time with our parents, our family and our friends? This is the time to mend minor disagreements with family, friends and neighbors; to forgive and forget. This is also the time to remember those less fortunate, to teach our children to share our good fortune with our loved ones, as well as those in need. There are families right here in our communities who need our assistance. Help make the season brighter for them by giving generously. And consider giving your children gifts they will cherish for a lifetime; the gift of love and the gift of giving. The holidays are the perfect time to teach your children to be thankful for what they have and to help others. For that is truly what the holidays are about. Have a great holiday season! Sincerely,

Sound the Alarm! Fire Department Selects Its Member of the Year By Julie Levin
I
n celebration of Fire Prevention Week, the Plantation Fire
Department recently honored one of its own for outstanding service. The department named Lieutenant Alex Poitevien as the Plantation Fire Department’s Member of the Year for 2012. Poitevien, who joined the department in 2003, has had a big effect on the department, even beyond his firefighting duties. A few months ago, Poitevien displayed his artistic side by designing the graphics scheme for the Department’s newest fire truck, Engine 56. “Lieutenant Poitevien came up with the sleek, modern design which has set the standard for all Plantation’s trucks in the future,” said Fire Chief Joe Harris. He also designed the Breast Cancer Awareness shirts department personnel wore throughout the month of October, which was Breast Cancer Awareness Month. His design combined the pink, breast cancer awareness ribbon with the Fire Department emblem. Harris said residents appreciated the effort. “We have had many positive comments about the shirts,” said Harris. “They have drawn tremendous attention and praise from the community.” Poitevien’s honor is the culmination of a lifelong dream for the firefighter. According to Fire Chiefs, Poitevien would ride his bicycle as a boy, following the fire trucks to calls, listening intently to his scanner, and showing up at numerous Fire Department and Association functions. “As an adult Alex has been able to realize those childhood passions,” wrote Captain Evan Katz in his nomination of Alex for the award.” When I think of all the hard work that individuals put in to make this department work, it’s only a fraction of what Alex does.” Other Fire Department activities during Fire Prevention Week included the annual Fire Prevention Poster and Essay contest. school and local fire prevention programs, and the selection of the Business of Year.

makes the best chili around, now is the time to put your recipe to the test. St. Benedict’s Episcopal Church in Plantation is hosting its first ever Chili Cook-Off and they are looking for local chefs who can provide a little bite. “We here at St. Benedict’s believe our chili is the best around. So, we thought we would challenge anyone who thinks they can make better to come and compete with us.” says Carolyn Bailey, Chair of the event. The cook-off, called “Meat Your Maker” will be held December 8 from noon to 6 p.m. at the church, which is located at 7801 NW 5th Street in Plantation. Organizers are hoping as many as 200-300 hungry guests show up to sample the offerings of up to a dozen chili cooks. The church has put out the challenge to Plantation and Davie firehouses, organizations, churches and synagogues, but the competition is also open to any individual chefs or groups. No pre-made chili will be allowed, everything must be made from scratch. “All cooking will be done here,” said Maureen O’Brien, one of the organizers of the cook-off. Free chili sampling will run from 3:30 - 5:00 p.m.
or until the chili runs out. In addition to bragging rights, the chili makers will also compete for prizes. There will be an official judging to determine the winners as well as a “People’s Choice Award”. There will also be music, dancing and games, along with chances for raffle prizes, including a large flat screen TV, an iPad and more. St. Benedict’s Episcopal Church has been a mainstay in Plantation since 1960, and works to help the community through mission work and outreach programs. St. Benedict’s serves and collaborates with The Shepherd’s Way, God’s Little Lambs, St. Laurence Chapel, The Jubilee Center of South Broward, Life Net 4 Families/Cooperative Feeding Program, Haiti Comfort House, Food for the Poor, Inc. and Seafarers’ House. Stray Cat Strut Comes to Plantation By Julie Levin
A
founding member of one of music’s best known “Rockabilly”
groups is coming to Plantation for a one-of-a-kind concert. The Stray Cat’s Lee Rocker will perform at the Hawks Landing Clubhouse January 19 to help raise money for at-risk dogs. The concert is being presented by Have a Heart Inc., a non-profit volunteer canine rescue in South Florida. All funds raised through the concert will go towards caring for the canines. “We take dogs from shelters, make them healthy and we don’t give up on them. We are particular about where they go and try to find them the perfect home,” said Janice Green, the founder of Have a Heart, Inc. For a second year, Green is partnering with Plantation resident Susan Fischer for the concert at Hawks Landing. Last year, close to 250 people packed the clubhouse for their first fundraising concert, which brought in close to $30,000 and featured three members of the Little River Band, as well as Bad Company’s lead singer Brian Howe. This year, music lovers can dance to the tunes of the Stray Cat’s Lee Rocker, who made his mark rocking his giant upright bass in the legendary music group The Stray Cats. Founded by Rocker, Brian Setzer and Slim Jim Phantom, the Grammy-nominated group sold nearly 10 million albums and garnered 23 gold and platinum cer- Rock This Town! Though Rocker will be the only original Stray Cat coming to Plantation, his band will rock out familiar tunes like “Rock This Town” and “Stray Cat Strut”. This year’s event will feature not only the concert, but a DJ to keep the fun going all night long. “This year, we are going to keep the party going with dancing after the show,” said Fischer. The proceeds will go towards Have a Heart, which rescues homeless dogs and keeps them safe, healthy and socialized until new homes can be found. Because Have a Heart does not receive public funding, they stay afloat primarily through private donations. The proceeds from were last year’s concert helped the group expand to a 5-acre rental property that provides space to comfortably house the dogs. “”It was a godsend,” Green said. They are hoping this year’s concert will allow them to prepare new space at the property so they can help even more dogs.
The concert will be held January 19 at the Hawks Landing Clubhouse, located at 500 Hawks Landing Circle in Plantation, beginning at 7 p.m. The $125 event price includes the concert, 2 drink tickets, food and desserts. f you love to read, and want to learn more about the very latest
offerings from local authors, make plans to attend the latest installment of the Florida Author Showcase Series at the West Regional Library in Plantation. Created in October, the series is designed to give a brief spotlight to some of Florida’s most promising writers. Each month, the showcase features four Florida-based authors ready to talk about their books and the latest issues facing authors. “To help local Florida authors get exposure for their books, I thought it would be a good idea to have the Showcase on a regular ongoing basis and to invite more than one author to present their books at each event,” said Nancy Ansley, the programs and exhibits supervisor of the Libraries Division. The next showcase is December 4 and will feature authors Sandra Balzo, the author of “Triple Shot” Maggy Thorsen Mysteries Series, Jeremiah Healy, author of the legal thriller “A Stain Upon the Robe,” Lee Ravine, the author of the memoir “Riding Solo” and Madelyn Lorber, who wrote “The Eyes Have It.” According to Ansley, each author is provided with a table to set up and display their books. They are given about 10 minutes to talk about their book and take questions
from the audience. The last 30 minutes of the program is for the authors to visit with the guests, sign and sell their books. The Florida Author Showcase Series grew out of a need for a central meeting place for authors and book lovers. Over the past few years, Ansley said she’s had quite a few local authors contact her to do book discussions. They found with just one author featured at a time though, the turnout was generally low and the author disappointed. Ansley turned to author Bob Sherman, author of the provocative humor More Bull, and asked for help in enticing local authors to take part. Ansley said attendance at the Showcase has also grown as well. Light refreshments will be served. The date for the next Showcase is December 4th. It will run from 2:00 to 3:30 pm with the last 30 minutes allocated to selling and signing books. The library is located at 8601 W. Broward Boulevard in Plantation. Art Guild Members Show Their Artistic Skill By Julie Levin

ith an array of color and design surrounding them, the
members of the Plantation Art Guild recently honored some of the best work produced by its members. The Guild held its 2012 Members’ Show and Awards Presentation October 29 at Deicke Auditorium in order to honor their 12 top entries. “An artist is always their own worst enemy, so to have someone else say your work is good is really fun,” said Edie Bryan, the President of the Plantation Art Guild President, who entered two works. In all, the Guild’s members submitted 29 entries; paintings and photographs and other works done in 2-d format. The works were judged by South Florida artist Sally Cooper, who told Guild members through an email that she looks first for paintings that “excite” her when judging. “Those paintings that drew me in exhibited a superior degree of craftsmanship as well as good use of color and design elements. An exceptional piece of work makes you want to stay awhile and feel the emotion, discover something new or just enjoy the piece,” she said. First place went to Jorge Leon for his work called “Chinese Dragon Warrior”, a surreal-
istic painting of an ancient ceramic Chinese warrior from the Ming Dynasty. “I always submit the best I can do and hope for the best,” said Leon, whose been a member of the Guild for two years. Second place went to Judy Nunno and third place went to Thelma Lubell. There were also awards for Judge’s Recognition, Merit and Honorable Mention. The Members’ Show is one of two major shows the Plantation Art Guild hosts each year. The other is an open show in February, and a volunteer show, that is open to the public. Now with an estimated 82 members, the Plantation Art Guild is always looking for art lovers to join them. The group provides opportunities for artistic expression, education and appreciation. They hold demonstrations by well-known artists, art show and exhibits, field trips to art galleries and museums, and workshops. All of their fundraising projects benefit the City of Plantation, Deicke Auditorium, Art in Public Places or scholarships. Plantation Pooch is “Hero Dog” to Owner

atiana, the hearing dog, didn’t nab enough votes to be named
the American Humane Society’s nationwide “Hero Dog”, but you won’t convince her owner that she’s not the best dog in the world. “She’s our hero and our winner, and that is enough for us,” said Cristina Saint-Blancard of Plantation. The Labrador/Golden Retriever mix, who has been with Cristina for more than a year, was one of eight canine finalists in the running for the American Humane Association’s second annual national competition, which searches out and recognizes America’s Hero Dogs. Organizers selected the eight finalists from a pool of 359 dogs representing 8 categories: Hearing Dogs, Law Enforcement & Arson Dogs, Service Dogs, Therapy Dogs, Military Dogs, Guide Dogs, Search and Rescue Dogs, and Emerging Hero Dogs (the category for “ordinary” dogs). This year the honor went to “Gabe”, a retired military dog who completed more than 210 combat missions in Iraq with 26 explosive and weapons finds. Since retiring in 2009, Gabe visits schools, seeking to promote the values of compassion and respect, and the importance of staying in school. The winner was selected by a panel at an Oct. 6 event in California that included Whoopi Goldberg, Kristen Chenoweth, and the handlers and owners of last year’s eight finalists. Tatiana came to national attention after a live-saving effort in her Plantation home. The 3-year old pooch spotted trouble when owner Cristina began struggling for breath during a severe asthma attack. Tatiana made her way to Cristina’s mother’s room, who quickly realized her daughter was in trouble and called paramedics. They told her family Tatiana undoubtedly saved Cristina’s life. Cristina says that’s why she and her family traveled to Beverly Hills for the ceremony, to pay tribute to Tatiana who she calls her best friend and guardian angel, as well as all the other “hero” dogs. “Tatiana has forever changed my life and given me another chance at independence, happiness, and life. The pure joy, hope, and selfless love she
radiates and embodies have not only touched my life, but the lives of my family, friends, and community at large,” said Cristina, who graduated last year from Purdue University with a master’s degree in biomedical engineering. Cristina hopes to use the honor as a stepping stone to continuing her quest to educate the public about service dogs and how they positively transform the lives of their companions and families. She says she has a few ideas she wants to run past state legislators and is also hoping to start an education program for children in schools and at libraries so that they learn about the dogs and the different “jobs” they can have. She also wants to help raise funds for groups like Canine Companion for Independence, Cristina and Tatiana (right) pose with Chuck Schuck and “Gabe”, the 2012 Top Hero dog which raised Tatiana. “There is a lot of ignorance out there regarding service dogs, and the only way to combat that is through education. Many are just used to guide dogs for the blind or service dogs for people with mobility issues. Most don’t even know what hearing dogs are or what they do. Others commit fraud by trying to pass their pet dogs as service dogs, and don’t know or don’t care that what they are doing is making it harder for those with real service dogs. People need to understand that service dogs are a necessity, not a commodity,” she said.

“Art Search” Contest Winners Announced By Julie Levin
T
he artwork and creations of some of
Plantation’s most promising young artists were on display for all to see at the recent Art in the Park event in Liberty Tree Park. During the two day event, organizers of the city-wide “Art Search” competition unveiled their winning entries, which had been submitted by Plantation students. The yearly visual arts competition, hosted by the City of Plantation Parks & Recreation Department and the Plantation Junior Woman’s Club, began in 1993 and is designed to be a showcase for local students. Each year, the PJWCs select an overall theme for the Art Search competition. This year’s theme was Everybody Loves Art. Young artists in the k-12 age range were invited to submit works in all mediums, with the exception of sculptures, that best portray that theme. A panel of judges including Art Search co-chairs Barbara Clair Kettler and Lisa Charland, Art in the Park Chairwoman Darlene Gimble and Samantha Fitzgerald looked for a combination of artistic talent and how well the art represented the theme. In addition to the pride of being selected, all winners also received ribbons and gift cards. Congratulations to all the artists!

s a child, Julie Talenfeld remembers her family marking the
traditions of Hanukkah with a huge party, with plenty of food, relatives and friends around. The memories provide such comfort that not only does Talenfeld and husband Howard carry it on with their own family, but with dozens of children in need as well. As they have for the past seven years, the Plantation couple will once again sponsor a huge Hanukkah party for close to 100 children of the JAFCO (Jewish Adoption and Foster Care Options) Village, a non-profit organization that provides services to abused and neglected children in South Florida. Touchdown for Peters Elementary School and the Dolphins By Julie Levin

essica Gonzalez got a 10th birthday present she won’t soon
forget. The Plantation 4th grader hauled in a long pass from a star Miami Dolphin football player while running downfield at her school recently. “It was awesome, especially since it is my birthday and they are professional football players” said Jessica, who says she practices by sometimes tossing the ball around with her brother. Jessica was one of several hundred students who got to practice their football skills with Miami Dolphin players Davone Bess, Dan Carpenter, Nolan Carroll, Brandon Fields, and Mike Pouncey at Peters Elementary October 30. The school, which is located at 851 NW 68th Avenue, was one of just 34 nationwide to receive a visit from their pro team after winning the NFL PLAY 60 Super School contest. Winning schools received a $10,000 NFL PLAY 60 grant for health and wellness initiatives. Early plans at the school are to put the money towards a playground.”We are proud to have the Dolphins here to show off our kids and to highlight the programs and teachers here at Peters,” said Steve Decotis, the Assistant Principal at Peters Elementary School. The visit began with a ticker-tape parade for the players, who were met by a barrage of Miami Dolphin colors, decorations and jerseys from the staff and students. The group visited the principal’s office and then spoke to students about the importance of good
health. Then it was off to the school’s athletic fields for 60 minutes of exercise with the players, which is the cornerstone of the NFL PLAY 60 campaign, trying to make sure that kids get exercise for an hour a day. The players split into five groups and worked with the 3rd, 4th and 5th graders on stretching, strength and flexibility exercises and football drills. “It’s very exciting,” said student Boaz Mongerard, after running a drill with punter Brandon Fields. DolphinWide Receiver Davone Bess encouraged his group of kids through a jump rope exercise. “Being role models in our community is important,” said Davone Bess. “If they see us exercising and eating right it can motivate them to lead a healthy lifestyle which is very exciting.” To celebrate the start of the 2012 NFL season through the Back to Football campaign, schools were encouraged to participate in the NFL PLAY 60 Super School contest and submit three essays explaining how they planned to show their NFL team pride and incorporate football into their lesson plans. Christine Scott is the head of PTA at Peters Elementary and helped spearhead the effort. “They are amazing and the kids just needed that boost of feeling important. Mirror Lake Elementary School. Three days before the federal holiday, the Plantation school held a ceremony remembering a former student who paid the ultimate price in defense of his country. School Principal Cindy Dean told the school’s fifth graders the ceremony was meant not only to honor U.S. Navy Lieutenant Matthew Lowe, but also to remind students what Veterans Day signifies. “We are going to use this day to learn about Veterans Day, so Monday when you are off, you will truly remember why we are off from school and how we need to honor our veterans,” said Dean, who is also the mother of a military veteran. The ceremony was held November 9th at the school, which is located at 1200 NW 72nd Avenue. Lt. Lowe lost his life in April of 2011 when the jet he was piloting crashed during a routine training mission in California. His mother Pamela told the students about his zest for life and passion for flying, which began when he was a college student at FAU. He went on to become a Naval Aviator, piloting an F/A-18 Super Hornet. She asked the students to remember five words in her son’s memory; purpose, passion, honor, love and the number “11” which was his call sign in the military. She said he was given the name because of a scale of 1-10, he always went above and beyond. “Matthew led his life to the fullest. I want you to remember that number 11, because even though you are young and have your whole life in front of you, you should live each day to the fullest,” she said.

The fact is that throughout your lifetime, even though you have had orthodontic treatment, you can expect changes in tooth position. Many factors at work may cause teeth to shift. Such changes vary from individual to individual and most of the time they are hardly noticeable. But on occasion changes occur that are disappointing to both the patient and the orthodontist. Changes in tooth position are not a failure of your orthodontic treatment but are a natural process. We expect changes in our bodies as we grow older, and teeth are no exception. To help control and limit these changes, retainers are prescribed after your braces are removed.
How long do I have to wear retainers?
Your orthodontist will recommend how long to continue wearing your retainers, whether they are removable (the kind you put in and take out) or fixed (bonded behind your teeth). Wearing your retainers as prescribed is the best way to keep your teeth from moving after your orthodontic treatment. There are many reasons teeth may move following orthodontic treatment. Teeth are not set in concrete, they are in bone. And because bone around your teeth is continually changing (breaking down and rebuilding), your teeth may shift after your braces are removed. By wearing your retainers, your teeth are more likely to remain where your orthodontist has placed them.
Why do some teeth shift?
The small changes that occur after braces are removed are due to a “setting in” as you use your teeth for biting and chewing. The more serious and undesirable changes may be traced to genetics or later –than-normal growth, which is unpredictable. Movement is most common in lower front teeth. This is particularly true if the teeth were extremely crowded prior to treatment. Changes in tooth position are lifelong and naturally occurring phenomenon. The best way to keep teeth from shifting is to wear your retainers as prescribed. If you noticed movement after your braces are removed, please contact your orthodontist.
Can retainers be worn long?
No. Retainers stabilize and preserve the alignment of teeth and jaws that orthodontic treatment achieved. Many people wear removable retainers nightly for the rest of their lives. Ask your orthodontist for guidance for your long term retainer wear.

Wipe Out Second Mortgages, Avoid Foreclosure and Stay in Your Home By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

housands of homeowners in our community are more than
50% upside down on their home mortgages and are looking for a way out. Some are frustrated in their attempts to modify their home loans, and others simply choose to give up their home because they are unsure of their rights. Wouldn’t it be much easier to save your home if you only had one mortgage and no other payments? How about if you were able to eliminate all your mortgage debt through a short sale, and stay in your home through a long term lease? For homeowners who have taken out a second mortgage on their home and lines of credit, facing our current economic climate can be particularly challenging. Additional liens on your home beyond your initial mortgage, however, can be wiped out through a Chapter 13 personal bankruptcy filing. When a judge removes mortgage liens from a property during bankruptcy proceedings it is referred to as “stripping” the lien. In a Chapter 13 bankruptcy, second mortgages, lines of credit and association liens against a homestead residence can be eliminated. Many bankruptcy courts follow a rule that makes a second mortgage, line of credit or other secondary lien totally unsecured if the principal amount owed on the first mortgage exceeds the fair market value of the personal residence. Even if you are not current on your first mortgage, you can use a Chapter 13 bankruptcy catch up on the arrearage over an extended period of time, or you can make a proposed modified mortgage payment under your Chapter 13 plan while your loan modification application is being processed without losing your home to foreclosure. Another effective strategy to remain in your home and wipe out excessive mortgage debt is to negotiate a short sale with an extended term leaseback. Under this strategy, you will be able to wipe out most, if not all your mortgage debt when the short sale is completed. This will allow you to obtain a “fresh start” without filing bankruptcy, and within two years you may be eligible to purchase another home under FHA guidelines. The challenge is to find an investor willing to lease your home back to you, and convincing your lender to authorize the arrangement. If traveling by car, you can either deduct the actual out-of-pocket expenses or use the standard medical mileage rate of 23¢ a mile. For most taxpayers, actual medical costs usually fall far short of the 7.5% threshold, but there is still a tax-favored way to pay your health care expenses. Health savings accounts (HSAs) allow taxpayers to deduct payments made into these accounts, up to an annual limit of $3,100 for singles and $6,250 for families. And you do not need to itemize to take advantage of an HSA deduction. Later on, money can be taken tax-free from the accounts to pay for qualified medical bills. Flexible spending accounts (FSAs) let you set aside money that can be withdrawn tax-free to pay medical expenses. Check with your employer to see if your company already offers such plans.

Such costs include prescription drugs, hospital bills, and premiums paid on health and dental insurance. And these costs can be incurred on behalf of yourself, a spouse, or a dependent. Just be sure to keep all applicable receipts to substantiate your expenses. A deduction often overlooked is travel expenses incurred to receive medical care.

T
he flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza
viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccination each year. Every year in the United States, on average: ▸▸ 5 percent to 20 percent of the population gets the flu ▸▸ more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu complications ▸▸ about 36,000 people die from flu
Symptoms of Flu ▸▸ fever (usually high) ▸▸ headache ▸▸ extreme tiredness ▸▸ dry cough ▸▸ sore throat ▸▸ runny or stuffy nose
▸▸ muscle aches ▸▸ Stomach symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, also can occur but are more common in children than adults.
When to Get Vaccinated
October or November is the best time to get vaccinated, but you can still get vaccinated in December and later. Flu season can begin as early as October and last as late as May.
Who Should Get Vaccinated
In general, anyone who wants to reduce their chances of getting the flu can get vaccinated. However, it is recommended by The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) that certain people should get vaccinated each year. They are either people who are at high risk of having serious flu complications or people who live with or care for those at high risk for serious complications.
Who Should Not Be Vaccinated
Complications of Flu
Complications of flu can include bacterial pneumonia, ear infections, sinus infections, dehydration, and worsening of chronic medical conditions, such as congestive heart failure, asthma, or diabetes. Never give aspirin to children or teenagers who have flu-like symptoms – and particularly fever – without first speaking to your doctor.
There are some people who should not be vaccinated without first consulting a physician. These include: getting an influenza vaccine previously ▸▸ People who have a severe allergy to chicken eggs ▸▸ Influenza vaccine is not approved for use ▸▸ People who have had a severe reaction in children less than six months of age to an influenza vaccination in the past ▸▸ People who have a moderate or severe ▸▸ People who developed Guillain-Barré illness with a fever should wait to get syndrome (GBS) within Six weeks of vaccinated until their symptoms lessen.

Halloween Fun Helps the Community By Julie Levin
P
lantation residents and businesses had plenty of fun, but made
sure to remember those in need in our community around Halloween time. The annual celebration saw not only lots of trick or treating, but also festivals, costume parties and pumpkin decorating events that gave back to the community. Plantation-based C3/CustomerContactChannels raised just over $3,300 for HANDY through a costume contest and chair decorating contest for their employees October 31. The judges for both contests were children from HANDY, a small organization with a broad reach with a mission to embrace, educate, and empower vulnerable youth to become engaged and productive adults. The 4th Annual Pumpkin Event at Jacaranda Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry helped other children in our community. More than 20 local dental offices decorated pumpkins and delivered them to the office, where patients had a chance to vote on their favorite in the office and on Facebook. After a week, the pumpkins were delivered to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and Plantation General Hospital and distributed by

the staff throughout the hospital for patients, staff and visitors to enjoy! And as always, the City of Plantation held its Family Halloween and Safety Festival October 27 at the Kennedy Community Center, to make sure young trick-or-treaters had fun in a safe environment.

More than 6,000 hungry guests turned out to enjoy the chicken and ribs, as well as live music, kids games, bounce houses, and raffle prizes. There were also live demonstrations; Plantation’s Firefighters, EMTs and Paramedics demonstrated how to safely remove a patient trapped in a motor vehicle.
Day of Beauty
Barbara Lyons gives Graciela Broze a massage during the JAFCO Day of Beauty event at the Heaven and Earth Salon in Plantation recently. The event, led by Fern Schneider (event cochair), Larissa Kline (salon owner), and Lisa Simon (co-chair) raised close to $9,000 for JAFCO by offering their services on a Sunday, with all proceeds going to JAFCO. Natalie Cedeno, Jada Whittingham, Madison Cooper helped raise money through refreshments.
5K Run/Walk to Battle Sarcoma
The Archbishop High School Girls Soccer Team was one of many that turned out recently in Central Park for the 5th Annual 5K Run/Walk for a Sarcoma Cure. More than 800 people registered for the event, bringing in more than $100,000 for Sarcoma research. Many came out in support of family and friends, like Team Vanessa, who came out in support of Vanessa Gill.
