very year around this time we take a deep breath and wonder what happened. Summer is over; the vacation pictures and memories have moved to the back of our minds; the kids are back in school; the Halloween sugar rush has barely worn off and we are in full preparation for Thanksgiving. What? Thanksgiving already? The entire year seems to have gone by in the blink of an eye. Another year of family, friends and togetherness; of being there for each other and enjoying each other’s companionship. When we sit down this year with our loved ones from near and far to indulge in a delicious turkey feast, let’s give thanks for all the little blessings we have received throughout the year and truly enjoy each other. Happy Thanksgiving!

Moseley, who is the project’s champion. The City developed a Garden Treasures video series to allow residents to reap the benefits of the garden without leaving home. There are currently nine episodes, including the latest one titled “Fostering Children’s Connection with Nature.” Each five-minute segment provides simple tips and tools that viewers can use to make their own nutritious food. They are available on Miramar television Channel 78 or 16, as well as at www.ci.miramar.fl.us. “The videos are a great way for residents to replicate our efforts on a smaller scale in their own backyards,” said Elsi Rose, Development and Capital Management Coordinator. “The common element in all of the videos is the garden.” There is also a bi-monthly Educational Series which includes topics like Soil Preparation and Composting, Organic Fertilizers for Florida Gardens, and Plant Companions: What to and Not-to Plant Together. The topics are chosen based on volunteer requests.

The City provides the land, basic materials and guidance. Resident-volunteers run the project, tending to the garden on a daily basis at different hours of the day. he Broward County Fair has become a South Florida tradition. Many, like Rachel Lohan of Pembroke Pines, wait all year for the event. The thirteen-year-old has been attending the fair with her friends for as long as she can remember. “It is always amazing,” said Rachel. “I am so excited to ride the roller coasters and eat all of the yummy food.” The 11-day Fair opens at 5 p.m. on November 17 and runs through

November 27. It is located on 115 acres at the Pembroke Pines City Center, 10300 Pines Blvd. Founded in 1976, the Broward County Fair is a not-for-profit organization that represents and presents the cultural and agriculture life of Broward County and its residents. The midway will feature mechanical rides, including a Kiddieland and several state-of-the-art, thrill rides that are making a rare appearance in Broward County. Students and adults from all over South Florida will exhibit their talents in the performing and visual arts pavilion. There will be free concerts, cultural performances and other special events that are all part of general admission, including the Miss Broward County Fair pageant. Visitors can indulge in all of the traditional fair foods, as well as some unusual selections like funnel cake sundaes and deep-fried Oreos.

The popular agriculture and live stock area will offer a chance to see pigs, cows, rabbits, cavies (guinea pigs) and chickens; cheer on your favorite contestant in the daily Cavy Races; and view beautiful horticulture displays created by South Florida students. Broward schoolchildren will showcase their academic efforts and talents through a variety of educational exhibits. Kevin Barker of Pembroke Pines plans to attend with his wife and three children. “The fair gets better and better each year,” said Barker. “I have wonderful memories of attending as a kid and now my own children are creating memories.” There are a variety of specials listed on the website. On opening night, take advantage of the $40 carload deal which includes unlimited rides and admission. There are also wristbands available which entitle the purchaser to unlimited rides and admission on other days and nights. Aggressive Driving – A Problem for Police and South Florida Residents By Howard Citron

N

o one is safe when drivers act recklessly and aggressively on Florida highways. According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), aggressive driving is a factor in 56% of fatal car crashes nationwide. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) identifies weaving, tailgating, distracted driving, unsafe lane changing and speeding as primary aggressive driving behaviors. The NHTSA adds that aggressive drivers are more likely to drink and drive. The attitudes of drunk drivers can quickly escalate into episodes of road rage resulting in the potential for bumping other vehicles and even resorting to the use of a firearm from behind the wheel.

Recently, Florida police departments were highlighted by the NHTSA as examples of law enforcement agencies using innovative methods to cut down on the high number of aggressive and reckless driving incidents in their jurisdictions. Police officers could be found on lawn mowers, sitting on park benches or sitting on road construction vehicles watching traffic. They would then call ahead to policemen in squad cars to apprehend reckless drivers. The results were effective and increased the number of aggressive driving prosecutions in our state. The Florida Highway Patrol has continued to take on aggressive drivers in various safety campaigns, including Operation Safe Ride, the Aggressive Driving Crackdown and the Blitz on Aggressive Drivers (BAD). Despite these efforts and other means of educating the public in removing aggressive and reckless drivers from Florida’s roadways, aggressive and dangerous driving remains a major concern. In fact, Miami, Florida was named the Worst Road Rage City in a national survey. Aggressive driving is extremely dangerous and can lead to serious injury and death. According to the NHTSA, one of the best ways to avoid becoming a victim of an aggressive driver is to “put your pride aside” and simply move out of the way if a driver begins to tailgate or is violating the rules of the road. The NHTSA also suggests avoiding eye contact and/or making physical gestures in response to an aggressive driver in an effort to avoid a confrontation. If you find yourself driving in an aggressive manner, you should remain calm, monitor your speed and concentrate on driving safely. If necessary, pull off the road until you calm down. Vehicles are meant to get drivers and their passengers safely to their destinations and not as weapons. Citron & Bloom has offices in Weston and Coral Springs. H

appy holidays! I am quite sure that you feel the same way I do; wondering how fast this year has gone. I can’t believe that a month from now, we will soon be saying goodbye to 2011 and welcoming 2012. We do have some time remaining this year, which gives us a wonderful opportunity to reflect on our past year, prepare ourselves for the New Year, and maybe most importantly, pass on some great lessons to our children. It is no secret that we all continue to face challenging times. Miramar Mayor Lori C. Moseley We know of friends, relatives, neighbors, and even ourselves who have faced hard times this past year. In fact, we know some who are still dealing with these hard times. While some of us are a little better off than before, there are still others who are not. It is important that during the holiday season we try and share what we have with those who can benefit the most. As always, I am reminding everyone to be as generous as possible to the different food drives and food pantries in our city.

In addition, the holidays provide us a great opportunity to practice what we always preach to our children --- kindness and generosity to others. Pass on the important things that we learned and experienced when growing up, like the warm family memories of sharing, special moments with our loved ones; and how thoughtful gestures can mean so much to others. So I propose something different for all of us to do this holiday season. Instead of buying presents for each other, let’s create family memories that will last a lifetime. Give and volunteer your time as a family to charities and maybe even adopt a family. By these simple thoughtful actions, we can drastically change the life of others while making our holidays worth remembering and making the world a better place. Happy holidays to you and your family.

s we approach the holiday season, I am mindful of the news about the current dire economic conditions and its effects on many people in our community. I am hopeful, however, that the resilience and strength of those in the community will help to make the upcoming holiday season a time when families value one another a little more and take the time to share some optimism about the future. Many of you have been asking when the Pembroke Pines Community Garden was going to happen and now it is here. I Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis hope that we hear from many of you who wish to sign up as volunteers for the community garden to make this a success. This garden is a great opportunity for the community to get involved and build our very own community garden. All of the volunteers would have the fantastic opportunity to learn about organic gardening, seasonal vegetable gardening in South Florida, environmentally friendly fertilizing techniques, butterfly gardening and so much more! The City’s community garden will include raised garden beds for all volunteers interested in becoming “friends of the garden” or for those who want to lease an individual raised planting bed for their own individual vegetables and herbs.

20% OFF 15% OFF $ 5 OFF Was Cut & Color

In addition, the garden would incorporate a fruit orchard, handicapped access planting beds, gazebo and arbor areas, butterfly and native Florida flower planting beds, etc. The Pembroke Pines Community Garden would be a great resource for our community to get familiar and proficient in sustainable agricultural and horticultural practices, integrated pest management techniques and the great importance of environmental stewardship. The project will be run by residential volunteers who in exchange for their community or individual volunteering hours will have access to the harvest for their personal enjoyment and consumption or to donate to nonprofit organizations that provide food for low income families. My wife Barbara and I are signing up to be volunteers. I wish to thank our Landscape Director Guillermo Salazar and our Landscape Committee for putting this fantastic community garden together. However, we need volunteers to make this work. This is the perfect time to participate in the community garden. The weather is getting cooler and I know that many of you have green thumbs. If you have any questions about the community garden, please call 954-435-6511. As always if you have any other questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me by email at fortis@ppines.com, or my office at 954-435-6505.

Miramar Seniors to Celebrate Thanksgiving with Traditional Dinner and Dancing By Debby Teich

T

hanksgiving will come a little early for a group of Miramar senior citizens when they have the opportunity to sit down with friends for their fill of turkey - with all the trimmings. The City of Miramar Social Services Department will host its 30th annual Thanksgiving Dinner at 6 p.m., on Nov. 17, at the Miramar Cultural Center, 2400 Civic Center Place. The holiday is a time to give thanks and share great food with friends and family. It can often be a lonely and difficult time for seniors, however, whose family may live in other places or who might not have any family at all. “This event gives them an opportunity to have dinner with their Senior Center family,’ said Kim Morrow-Lopez, social services program coordinator. “For some, this is the only dinner they will have. It is one of our most beloved annual traditions.” On the day of the dinner, the Center’s 150 seniors will get dressed in their finest attire as they prepare for an evening out. They will sit down to a candle lit table, covered with white linens and set with china. They will have an opportunity to enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, complete with turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and more. After dinner, they can dance to live entertainment and take a

chance at winning a door prize. For many of the seniors, who are from other countries, this will be their first exposure to this American holiday. “All of the seniors really look forward to it,” said Morrow-Lopez, who has been involved with the effort for the past nine years. “They feel like they are part of something.” The event is sponsored by the Senior Advisory Council and the City of Miramar. Tickets are $18 for members and $20 for non-members and transportation is included in the price. A bus is available to pick up the seniors at their homes. The City of Miramar operates two senior centers designed for those who are at least 55 years old. The Sunset Lakes Senior Center is in West Miramar, 2801 SW 186 Ave., while the senior center in the Multi-Service Complex is in East Miramar, 6700 Miramar Pkwy. Both centers offer a wide array of services such as counseling and support groups, information and referral, health and wellness, recreational activities and even a hot lunch provided by Broward Meals on Wheels. For more information, call 954-889-2700 or visit www.ci.miramar.fl.us.

Blown Away Hair Salon Is “A Cut Above” By Debby Teich

I

t has been a year since Blown Away Hair Salon opened its doors and the full service hair and skin care salon for women and men has already become one of the most popular in the area. The Cooper City salon offers the latest in haircuts, styling, color, conditioning treatments, relaxers, Keratin Treatments, microdermabrasion peels and more. It has an experienced and friendly team of artists that is ready to assist clients with all of their beauty needs. Owners Laura O’Shea and Ann Williams have been working in local salons since the early 80’s so they have a good understanding of what clients are looking for in a salon. They designed an upscale, state-of-the-art salon decorated with rich wood, beautiful granite and a variety of chandeliers. They also assembled a top notch team that goes out of their Owners Laura O’Shea and Ann Williams way to make clients feel comfortable. Everyone enjoys working together so much that they even formed an Optimist softball team and meet for practices and games after hours. “We want our customers to look forward to coming to their appointments,” said Laura. “We want them to feel relaxed from the moment they walk in the salon.” And they do. As soon as they enter the reception area, they are greeted with a warm welcome and offered their choice of flavored water, mimosa or coffee. They can enjoy the soothing sounds of the built-in waterfall as they read a magazine, watch the 42 inch flat screen television, listen to XM music or stay connected with free Wi-Fi. “We value each and every one of our clients and want them to feel at home,” said Ann. Blown Away has attracted a team of the most experienced and talented stylists in the area who are current on the latest beauty trends and styles. They begin each appointment with a consultation to understand the client’s needs. Some are looking for a subtle enhancement while others want a dramatic change. Stylists also work with clients for special occasions like weddings, proms, Bar/ Bat Mitzvahs, First Communions and more. The salon’s colorists use only the best brands and products, such as Goldwell and All Nutrients, an organic line. The products leave hair with vibrant color, texture and shine, as well as damage-free. The formulas are customized for each client depending on whether they want to enhance their natural color or create an entirely new look. Since the process is often time consuming, Blown Away has gone to great lengths to ensure that it is as comfortable and convenient as possible. The salon’s unique and beautiful state-of-the art Color Bar allows customers to relax in one seat during the entire treatment. Colorists also use a Rollerball for processing, instead of the traditional hair dryer. Many of Blown Away’s customers come for Keratin blow outs and treatments, which have become very popular because they leave hair looking silky, smooth and

straight, without any frizz or damage. Although many salons offer these treatments after hours, Blown Away has a private room with two separate ventilation systems so it can offer these services during regular business hours. Clients also like to relax with some of the other treatments. The salon has full service nail care, including manicures, pedicures, acrylics, pink and whites and gel acrylics. Many of the nail technicians have a long list of dedicated clients who are now customers of the salon. Lisa Jarecki’s has been using the same nail technician for 17 years and followed her to the salon. “I really enjoy coming to Blown Away,” said Lisa. “It is classy and tastefully decorated. It is a pleasure to walk in to a salon of this caliber.” Blown Away also has a licensed esthetician with 17 years of experience in the area. She offers waxing, light chemical peels, enzyme peels, microdermabrasion and more. Clients can also purchase a variety of products so they can enjoy some of the benefits of good hair and skin care at home. One of newest lines, Enjoy, has a special application that clients can pull up on the salon’s IPAD or at home. The application teaches clients how and when to use each product, as well as how to achieve more than 35 different looks. Blown Away has also become a haven for many cancer patients. The staff is very sensitive to their specialized needs and even offers some free treatments for clients who are growing their hair back. After a diagnosis of lymphoma in July 2010, Kristi Lathers endured many months of chemotherapy and radiation treatments. She lost her hair and visited Blown Away to help her manage it as it grew back. “It is always an uplifting experience when I visit the salon,” said Krsiti. “Everyone goes out of their way to make me feel welcome. It is also extremely clean, which is important since my suppressed immune system has left me sensitive to germs.” During Breast Cancer Awareness month, the salon also offered pink extensions and donated the profits to the breast cancer research. Plan to Travel for Thanksgiving? Sheriff Lamberti Offers Tips to Keep You Safe! By Sheriff Al Lamberti

T

he Thanksgiving holiday is fast approaching and many Broward County residents will be taking vacations or leaving town to visit with family and friends. The Broward Sheriff’s Office reminds everyone that there are certain securityminded steps to take before leaving town. Remember to stop all newspaper deliveries, ask a trusted neighbor to pick up your mail and contact your local BSO district office to sign up for our Home Watch program. When you sign up for BSO’s Home Watch program, a deputy, community service aide or BSO volunteer will check on your home regularly while you are on vacation. An exterior check of your home will be conducted to make sure there have been no unlawful entries and that no other obvious problems have occurred outside of your home. To sign up for this FREE service, visit www.sheriff.org/homewatch and download the form. Complete it and return it to the BSO district that serves your community. You may also stop by your BSO district office and our staff will help you complete the form. Knowing that your home is being protected will put your mind at ease during your vacation. We only offer our Home Watch program in our patrol jurisdictions. If you live outside of a BSO jurisdiction, contact your city or town’s police department and ask if they offer a similar service. Before you leave town it is important to make sure your home appears occupied. Place timers on your lights and set them to turn on and off at different times. Lock your garage door and disconnect the automatic opener. Most importantly, tell a trusted neighbor that you are going to be away and ask them to dial 911 immediately if they see anyone on your property.

Please view our website for our new educational video.

SOURCE OF TAX COMPLIANCE

Here are some additional home security tips to keep in mind: ▸▸ Install good locks on all doors and windows and always use them. ▸▸ Give a spare key to your trusted neighbor and provide them with an emergency telephone number where they can reach you. ▸▸ Have someone mow your lawn if you’ll be away more than a couple of weeks.

Tax Planning

▸▸ Never leave a message on your telephone answering machine stating you are out of town.

U.S. Individual Income Tax Returns

Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification number

▸▸ Leave your window blinds as you normally would if you were home.

These materials and information should not be considered as, or a substitute for, accounting, tax or financial advice. You should refrain in taking any action based upon the information provided here until you have received proper counsel.

▸▸ Invite your neighbor to park their car in your driveway. ▸▸ If you are traveling by air, we remind you to arrive early. At the Fort Lauderdale/ Hollywood International Airport our deputies are in place to ensure your safety, but long lines to check-in and security check points are often a cause of frustration for travelers. Arriving early alleviates congestion and allows you appropriate time to arrive at your gate. If you are picking up guests at the airport, you are reminded not to park on the swale at the entrance of the airport. You can park in the “cell phone” lot until your loved one’s flight arrives.

If you are traveling by car, you should also allow yourself enough time to reach your destination since the roadways are always more congested during the holidays. Confirm your vehicle is in proper working order prior to traveling. If you plan to stop at a rest area, make certain it is well-lit and lock your doors when you exit the vehicle. On behalf of the men and women of the Broward Sheriff’s Office, I wish you all a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving!

legally speaking How to Effectively Wipe Out Second Mortgages, Avoid Foreclosure and Stay in Your Home By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

T

housands of homeowners in our community are 20-50% upside-down on their home mortgages and are looking for a way out. Some are frustrated in their attempts to modify their home loans, and others simply choose to give up their home because they don’t know or are unsure of their rights. Wouldn’t it be much easier to save your home if you only had a first mortgage and no other payments? Also, once the market turns around, think of all the equity you could build back up years from now?

For homeowners who have taken out a second mortgage on their home and lines of credit, facing our current economic climate can be particularly challenging. Additional liens on your home beyond your initial mortgage, however, can be wiped out through a Chapter 13 personal bankruptcy filing. When a judge removes mortgage liens from a property during bankruptcy proceedings it is referred to as “stripping” the lien, a “cram down” or “strip down.” In a Chapter 13 bankruptcy, second mortgages and lines of credit against a principal residence can be eliminated up to the appraised value of the home. Many bankruptcy courts follow a rule that makes a second mortgage or line of credit totally unsecured if the principal amount owed on the first mortgage exceeds the fair market value of the personal residence. To qualify, the court will generally require proof that the home is worth less than the amount owed on the first mortgage, which can be established through a certified appraisal that is accepted by the court. In an environment where home prices in most markets have fallen at least 30% or more, many borrowers could qualify for this option. Tax liens and association liens can also be stripped off in Chapter 13 reorganization proceedings to the extent that the lien does not attach to equity in the property. More importantly, if your income level qualifies, you will be able to catch up on any past due mortgage payments through affordable installments spread out over 3-5 years. This allows you and your family to stay in your home, and none of your creditors will be able to contact you, harass you with annoying phone calls or proceed with a foreclosure during this bankruptcy protection period. Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, or at risk of foreclosure, including when is the right time to file for bankruptcy protection, are discussed in a new instructional DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine you will receive a FREE copy when you make an appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team. You may also purchase the DVD online at www.arcialawfirm.com. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 1-800-770-7102 to schedule a free consultation and to receive your FREE DVD. alloween has just passed and the season of giving is right around the corner. How will this season be different? Our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being as well as our relationships are all affected by whether or not we have a grateful heart. Regardless of the financial pressures we are facing as a nation, we have the ability to pull through if we can refocus our emotional energies and attitudes. Gratitude research has suggested that feelings of thankfulness have tremendous positive value in helping people cope with daily problems, especially stress, and to achieving a positive sense of the self. Research on mental well-being versus psychological illness has indicated that people who describe themselves as feeling grateful to others and/or to God tend to have higher vitality and more optimism, suffer less stress, and experience fewer episodes of clinical depression than the population as a whole. Furthermore, especially in this economy, grateful people worry less about financial hardship and suffer less anxiety about status or the accumulation of possessions. Partly because of this, these people are more likely to describe themselves as happy or satisfied with life.

So what about this attitude of gratitude is so freeing? These people do not necessarily ignore life’s difficulties but rather they focus on the willingness of other’s abilities to lighten their burden. To say we feel grateful is not to say that everything in our lives is necessarily great; it just means we are aware of our blessings. If you focus on disappointments and unsatisfied wants, you may be prone to unhappiness. If you’re fully aware of your disappointments, but at the same time thankful for the good that has happened and for your chance to live, you may have a stronger sense of well-being. Given this knowledge and in this season of Thanksgiving where do we begin? Practice and commit yourself to noticing your blessings and saying thank you to God and to others for them. Take the time to write thank you notes in response to gifts you’ve received, events you’ve enjoyed, or anything else that deserves thanks. Give God a quick thank you throughout the day for anything that gives you joy. Take a daily inventory of the blessings of that particular day. If you wish, keep a written list and see if it grows longer over time. Let it begin with: “Today I am grateful for……” Finally, the spirit of Thanksgiving does not have to be limited to one day of the year. Taking a mental inventory of your blessings, practicing random acts of gratitude and verbalizing appreciation can raise goodwill in your relationship, increase optimism, and lower anxiety and stress levels. In other words, giving thanks is good for your heart and your soul.

ung cancer results when abnormal cell growth invades and destroys normal lung tissue. An accumulation of abnormal cells is called a tumor. As a tumor grows, it can impair lung function, resulting in breathing difficulty and decreased oxygen in the blood. The cancer can also spread to other organs and eventually cause death. Lung cancer is the second most common form of cancer in the United States and the leading cause of cancer deaths. The American Cancer Society estimates 17,150 of the more than 220,000 new cases this year will be diagnosed in Florida. Most lung cancer cases occur in smokers (cigarette, pipe or cigar), however, some occur in non-smokers as well.

Join us for free web chats and events to learn the latest information on health topics that matter most to you. Cleveland Clinic specialists will share their expertise.

Symptoms and Diagnosis

Live Web Chats

Symptoms of lung cancer vary, but may include persistent cough, shortness of breath, wheezing, chest pain, and coughing up blood. Most lung cancers cause no symptoms until they are fairly large or advanced. Many patients will have lung nodules and/or spots on the lung. Most are not cancer but in certain circumstances they should be tested to see what they are. At Cleveland Clinic Florida, a highly specialized team of physicians collaborates to provide patients with coordinated diagnosis and treatment plans. The Interventional Pulmonology Program is one of the top interventional programs in the state of Florida through which our multidisciplinary team offers a full spectrum of minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic services. One minimally invasive procedure for diagnosing lung cancer is called endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) guided biopsy, which allows physicians to more accurately identify lung cancers without surgery. “During the ultrasound guided biopsy, a flexible scope is inserted into the windpipe and pushed up along the walls until we access the appropriate airway,” explains pulmonologist Eduardo Oliveira, MD, who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment and management of lung cancer. “With the help of ultrasound imaging, we can locate the suspicious lymph node or spot on the lung and use a very small needle to biopsy the tissue.” Tumors can also be diagnosed with CT scan guided needle biopsy. If necessary, Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS), also called thoracoscopy, can be used to biopsy nodules in the lung. Special telescopes, video cameras, and instruments are used to look and operate inside the chest through small incisions eliminating the need to cut muscle and spread ribs. This results in less post-operative pain and a faster recovery.

Surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy are used to treat lung cancer. Surgery involves removal of cancerous tissue, whereas radiation therapy involves destruction of cancer cells. In chemotherapy, a patient takes oral or intravenous drugs that target rapidly dividing or multiplying cancer cells throughout the body. Treating lung cancer can involve one or all of these interventions. If the cancer can be completely removed, surgery provides the best chance for cure. The VATS techniques described above also can be used to remove the tumor through very small incisions. For patients with tumors in major airways, a lung-sparing procedure called “sleeve lobectomy” may be used. “In the past, the surgical alternative would have been to remove the entire lung,” says Edward Savage, MD, cardiothoracic surgeon. “This procedure allows us to remove the tumor by removing the cancerous part of the lung while preserving the non-cancerous portion, minimizing the loss of breathing capacity.”

ask the expert Cervical Cancer By Yeny Andrade, M.D.

ervical cancer affects women of all ages. It is caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) which is only acquired through sexual intercourse. This cancer becomes less common and less aggressive in older women, especially after the age of 70. A pap smear is the initial test used to screen for this type of cancer. It is done in the office, by obtaining a small sample of cervix, also known as the neck of the uterus. The cervix has many cells that can undergo changes that may eventually lead to cancer. A Pap smear can show if your cells are going through these changes long before you actually have cancer. If caught and treated early, cervical cancer is not life-threatening. All women should start having screening pap smears about 3 years after onset of sexual intercourse, or at age 21. If a pap smear comes back abnormal, it will lead to repeat testing or more invasive testing done by your gynecologist. Screening pap smears should be done every year with the traditional test or every 2 years with the new liquidbased pap test. Beginning at age 30, women who have

had 3 normal Pap test results in a row may get screened every 2 to 3 years, as long as they don’t have high risk behaviors. There is also a Human Papilloma Virus test that can be combined with the liquid-based pap smear to give more specific results. According to the American Cancer Society, women 70 years of age or older who have had 3 or more normal Pap tests in a row and no abnormal Pap test results in the last 10 years may choose to stop having Pap tests. Also, women who have had a total hysterectomy (removal of the uterus and cervix) may also stop having Pap tests, unless the surgery was done as a treatment for cervical cancer or pre-cancer. Women who have had a hysterectomy without removal of the cervix should continue to have Pap tests. It is important to discuss your situation with your doctor, as you may have special circumstances.

he old adage “you are what you eat” is especially true when it comes to your skin. Patients are often unaware of the fact that the skin is the largest organ in the body. As such, we need to make appropriate dietary choices to enhance the appearance of our skin. The same way we choose heart-healthy foods and liver cleansing diets. It has been shown that midlife women with the most youthful looking skin also have the most Vitamin C in their diets. Vitamin C is essential for the cross-linking, or building of collagen, the support structure that keeps your skin’s surface smooth. Young-looking women also tend to eat less saturated fat and fewer carbohydrates, and have higher levels of linoleic acid, an Omega-6 fatty acid found mainly in nuts and dark, leafy green vegetables like spinach and kale. Ellajic acid, found primarily in pomegranates and red berries, is another wrinkle-fighter. This compound has also been known to reduce inflammation from sun damage exposure and reduces collagen breakdown. Other foods that have been shown to improve the appearance of the skin include salmon, particularly the wild caught variety like King, Sockeye, and Coho Salmon, often seasonably available. I would discourage one from eating farmraised variety as the mercury levels may be high unless it comes from an organic fishery. Salmon not only contains high levels of Omega 3 fatty acids beneficial to your skin and heart, but also astaxanthin, a carotenoid that improves skin elasticity. Green tea provides anti-aging plant polyphenols that may help your skin when you drink it and apply it topically. Egg yolks, avocados, lentils, chickpeas and beans (including soybeans) all fight dryness in the skin. Other antioxidants such as goji berries and acai berries found in juices and supplements enable your body to fight inflammation causing free radicals which are generated as a result of sun damage. In addition to the foods I have mentioned, plant sterols are beneficial not only to your skin, but also help lower LDL cholesterol. Sterols are found in fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains and beans. These substances limit your body’s ability to absorb cholesterol from food. Plastic surgery can dramatically enhance the appearance of your skin through laser or chemical resurfacing, skin excision or injectable therapy, but to keep your skin looking and feeling smooth, consuming essential nutrients through your diet may be just as beneficial over the long term.

he holidays are just around the corner. Soon it will be time to decorate, wrap gifts and enjoy delicious food. With all the hustle and bustle, we must be aware that many items associated with the holidays can be dangerous to our pets. Holiday decorations can be especially harmful if they are swallowed. Many cats like to chew on string-like decorations such as tinsel and ribbon. If swallowed this could lead to a string foreign body obstruction in the intestinal tract. This is a condition that can lead to intestinal perforation and severe infection if not treated. Unfortunately, by the time a cat shows signs of ingesting a foreign object (such as vomiting), emergency surgery and hospitalization are necessary for treatment. Many dogs also like to chew and often swallow objects that can get stuck in the intestinal tract requiring surgery. Objects such as toys, ornaments and clothing items are common examples. Other types of decorations can be toxic if ingested. Poinsettias can cause gastrointestinal irritation leading to vomiting and diarrhea. Lilies are especially harmful if ingested as they can lead to acute kidney failure.

B

urger is a seven-year-old beagle who was adopted from the Humane Society when he was three years old. His favorite people are his mommy and sister. His favorite toy is his red, stretchy man, which he loves to shake and carry around the house. Burger loves to find hidden food when he takes walks (found a half eaten hoagie in the bushes once) and he hates flies that sneak into the house. His favorite thing to do is snuggle with his human family. He was last seen lounging on the couch.

SHOULD YOUR PET BE OUR PET OF THE MONTH?

The delicious food and treats we enjoy during the holidays and also year round can be harmful if eaten by our pets. Chocolate is very toxic if enough quantities are eaten. It contains a chemical called theobromine which can cause hyper excitability, irritability, increased heart rate, restlessness, increased urination, muscle tremors, vomiting and diarrhea. Macadamia nuts are found in a lot of baked goods and can cause lethargy, vomiting, and increased body temperature followed by weakness, tremors, abdominal pain, lameness and pale mucous membranes. Allowing our pets to eat other foods that are not considered toxic but are very rich and fatty can lead to intestinal upset and in some pets, pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is an inflammatory condition of the pancreas that causes severe abdominal pain and excessive vomiting that can quickly lead to dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. All of the above conditions can be life threatening if not treated and can lead to an extended hospital stay for your pet. If you suspect that your pet has eaten something they shouldn’t have, contact your veterinarian immediately. Quick and aggressive treatment is often critical for successful resolution. Involving our pets in our holiday festivities is an important part of the bond we have with them. Keeping them safe and healthy is also very important. Remember to keep them in mind this holiday season and call your veterinarian with any concerns.

Patrons can mix different items from the menu or build their own dishes customized to their personal tastes. There is something for everyone. In 2009, Cesar Olivo, Samuel Perez Benatar and Adriana Perez Benatar opened Salsa Fiesta in Miami and it was an instant success. A few months ago, they opened their second location in Pembroke Pines, in the Cobblestone Plaza on Pines Blvd., just west of I-75. “The new Salsa Fiesta shares the spirit of its sister restaurant,” said Olivo. As in Miami, the Pembroke Pines restaurant is eco-friendly. The table tops are made of recycled wood. All of the paper goods and to-go boxes are made from eco-friendly items and the utensils are made from potato starch, not plastic. All of the food is also cooked to order using only fresh, high quality ingredients. Salsa Fiesta uses fresh vegetables from the field (Napa tomatoes, cabbage, Hass avocados, Caribbean plantains, Elote corn, tomatillo, fresh peppers) and all of the meats are marinated on the premises. The restaurant has an open kitchen, so customers can watch as the chefs peel the avocados for the infamous guacamole, the plantains for the crispy Tostones or the tomatoes for one of the Gourmet Salsas (Hot Tamale Salsa, Mango Relish, Pico de Gallo, Creamy Cilantro Salsa, Creamy Avocado Salsa, Creamy Chipotle Salsa). There are also many options for the health-conscious, including gluten-free. There are a variety of vegetarian dishes and anything on the menu can be ordered without meat. When ordering tortillas, customers can choose crispy, flour, whole wheat or lettuce wraps. They can also order white or brown rice. All of the creamy salsas are made with low fat yogurt. Many come for the traditional Tortilla Soup or delicious salads like the Acapulco Salad (roasted corn, pico de gallo, guacamole, cilantro salsa, served over a bed of lettuce with Tostones on top) or the Urban Bowl (“tortilla-less” burrito with cilantro-lime rice, beans, lettuce, pico de gallo, guacamole, creamy avocado salsa). The salads come with chicken, ground beef, pork, steak, fish or veggie. Patrons also love the Gourmet Burritos. They can choose from several delicious burritos or build one of their own. Two of the favorites are the Mexican Burrito with Cilantro Salsa (beans, roasted corn, onions, cilantro, monterey jack and cheddar cheese) and the Santa Fe Burrito with Sour Cream (roasted peppers, onions, pico de gallo, monterey jack and cheddar cheese). Other popular Burritos include the Guacamole Burrito with Avocado Salsa, Mango Burrito with Cream Chipotle The sizzling chicken or steak Fiesta Fajitas, served over roasted onions and peppers, Salsa and Hot Tamale come with sour cream, homemade guacamole, pico de gallo and 3 soft grilled tortillas.

I

t seems that almost everyday we read about a domestic violence case in the newspaper. Of course we only read about the cases which involve celebrities. This is not a problem which only involves celebrities, but an issue which can be found in almost every bedroom community. Of course a great deal of domestic violence goes unreported. There is also the other side of the coin. This is a law which can at times be misused to obtain the “upper hand” in a divorce. Judges will almost always err on the side of caution when required to make a decision about whether or not to issue an injunction for protection against domestic violence, commonly referred to as a restraining order. This at times can cause an abuse of the judicial system for personal gain. The law concerning domestic violence injunctions is very specific as to what must be proven to obtain an injunction and who may obtain one. This cannot be obtained because your spouse is being argumentative or disrespectful. Words, even harmful words, will not rise to the level that is required by law. An individual seeking an injunction must swear under oath, in a written petition, that he or she has been the victim of domestic violence or has a reasonable belief that he or she is in imminent danger. This applies to husbands and wives, individuals residing together, couples who have had children together, divorced couples, or any person related by blood or marriage. I have been involved with cases involving siblings, parents and children and girlfriend and boyfriend. Domestic violence is defined as a battery (intentional, unwanted touching), aggravated battery (deadly weapon), assault (threats of bodily harm with the apparent ability to carry out the threat), stalking or any criminal offense which results in physical injury or death of one family or household member by another.

The person seeking the injunction is the Petitioner and he or she must present to a judge sufficient allegations to warrant the issuing of an injunction. This is done by an ex parte proceeding, which means it is without the opportunity for the respondent (alleged abuser) from defending him/herself. If the Judge is satisfied, a temporary injunction will be issued for a maximum of 15 days. The law requires that the respondent be allowed a hearing within the 15 day period. At this hearing the Judge will be able to hear from both sides, and decide if the injunction should be extended or whether it should be dismissed. If extended it could become permanent and only removed upon order of the court. The temporary injunction will require the respondent to vacate his/her residence until the hearing takes place. During this time (approximately 15 days), the Respondent will not be allowed to have any direct or indirect contact with his/her spouse. If there is a minor child he/she may be prohibited from contact with the child.

health & Wellness The Truth About the hCG Diet Program November 2011 | To Advertise in Pines Miramar Town Times, Please call 954-306-1007 | www.pinesmiramartowntimes.com

By Dr. Gary Brandwein

Y

ou’ve probably heard about hCG, but what exactly is it? The hCG diet method was developed by the famous Dr. Simeons and appeared in his work, “Pounds and Inches.” Unlike traditional medical weight loss programs, the hCG diet protocol requires a very low calorie diet with very specific food intake along with the administration of real hCG. hCG is a natural hormone and is usually taken through subcutaneous injection, however other ways of administration are also available including oral drops with vitamin B12. The hCG weight loss program continues to help thousands of individuals shed unwanted pounds and fat at a rate of ½ to 2 pounds per day. The person closely following the hCG weight loss program can anticipate to shed pounds and fat constantly while maintaining their new weight and body frame well after completing the program. hCG raises the body’s rate of metabolism as well as initiating the release of stored body fat by keeping the body out of starvation mode which occurs with most low calorie diets. The stored fat will then be used for energy, resulting in the shedding of unwanted weight and fat in no time at all. When you start a low calorie diet, your body will naturally go into survival or “starvation” mode and hang onto your energy rich fat stores, breaking down your leaner muscle tissue for energy. You’ll become tired, hungry, and irritable. Many people attempting a low calorie diet will give up at this point as the body’s survival mechanism overpowers their will. But the hCG diet protocol enables the body to easily break down fat instead of muscle, eliminating hunger and keeping you comfortable and feeling great. And because the program targets excess fat, and not structural or normal reserves, your

body naturally reshapes as unwanted fat deposits are released. The actual weight loss depends on each person individually. The amount of weight one can shed while on the diet depends on several factors, including your beginning weight, age, gender, which stage of the diet plan you are on, how dedicated you are to the hCG diet program and if you are working out. It is crucial for you to strictly follow your program’s schedule. You can certainly speed up your weight reduction by increasing intake of vegetables, drinking more water and eating only unprocessed foods. The hCG diet protocol is not for everyone. You must be mentally prepared and want to dramatically change your life. But, if you follow the plan you will lose weight fast and maintain your target weight for years after the weight loss program is over. Not only will you appreciate your new look, you will have a different relationship with food and your body, and most importantly you will enjoy a much healthier lifestyle! The Let’s Move Campaign and Heart Disease by dr. simone fearon

Y

ou already know that exercise is good for you. You probably did not know that approximately 60% of all Americans age 18 and older report that they are physically inactive and only about 22% of Americans report regular sustained physical activity. Physical inactivity is one of the major risk factors for heart disease. Lack of regular exercise roughly doubles the risk of coronary heart disease and is a major risk factor for stroke in both men and women. Coronary artery disease is the leading cause of death in American women and men. Approximately 35% of all coronary heart disease mortality is related to physical inactivity. The American Heart Association has identified several risk factors, some of which can be modified, treated or controlled, and others that can’t. Risk factors often occur in clusters and may build on one another, such as obesity and inactivity leading to diabetes and high blood pressure. To achieve optimal physical and emotional health while reducing your risk for heart disease most patients should engage in regular exercise. Exercise has a number of effects that benefit the heart and circulation. These benefits include: ▸▸ Improving cholesterol and fat levels ▸▸ Improving blood glucose control, ▸▸ Reducing inflammation in the reducing the risk of developing arteries type 2 diabetes ▸▸ Weight maintenance/ reduction ▸▸ Lowering of blood pressure For patients with known heart disease it is recommended that programs include a comprehensive pre-exercise medical evaluation, which may include a graded exercise stress test; and an individualized exercise prescription. Exercise programs for patients with coronary artery disease should involve an initial slow, gradual progression of the exercise duration and intensity. Minimum frequency is three nonconsecutive days per week. Walking, jogging, bicycling, swimming and group aerobics, are appropriate for cardiovascular endurance conditioning. Strength training is also beneficial for selected patients. Resistance exercises generally are performed with a circuit training approach, up to 10-12 exercises using 10-12 repetitions of resistances that can be performed comfortably. Cross-training may also help to reduce musculoskeletal problems and increase compliance. Warm-up and cool-down periods of at least 10 minutes, including stretching and flexibility exercises, should precede and follow cardiovascular exercise performed either continuously or through interval training. This may be especially useful for patients with peripheral vascular disease and intermittent claudication (leg pain). Patients should take care to build exercise gradually if coming from a sedentary baseline, and exercise within the limits of any angina, breathlessness or claudication. It is best to avoid outdoor exercise in very cold weather, in strong winds or exercising when experiencing chest pain. Other Modifiable Risk Factors Include: ▸▸ smoking ▸▸ alcohol consumption ▸▸ high blood pressure ▸▸ obesity ▸▸ high blood cholesterol ▸▸ stress ▸▸ diabetes Coronary artery disease does not discriminate. The disease is, in large part, preventable. A healthier lifestyle is the key to prevention. Know your risks. You can live a better you!

veryone knows that you burn calories when you work out. But, did you know that you can continue burning calories long after your work out is done? That’s the premise behind Orangetheory Fitness. This revolutionary new fitness concept is providing patrons with the “ultimate work out.” In fact, it’s based on the program of the same name developed by exercise physiologist and fitness guru Ellen Latham at her Davie studio. Now she’s sharing her results-oriented routine with the world, with Orangetheory Fitness franchises opening nationwide. One of the first is right here in Pembroke Pines. “I am all about focusing on health and wellness,” shares Gary Hirsch, co-owner of the Pembroke Pines Orangetheory Fitness. “There was nothing out there that could compare to Orangetheory Fitness and I wanted to be a part of this innovative, one-ofa-kind fitness concept.” There really is no other fitness program like this. Orangetheory Fitness is based on science, not fitness fads. According to Hirsch, it uses scientifically-proven concepts to push your body to do its best. During the course of a class, members perform focused ten to 30 minute intervals that work the entire body and stimulate metabolism using a variety of equipment including treadmills, rowing machines, TRX suspension training and free weights. This proven work out helps build strength, increase energy, surpass workout plateaus, and tone and shape your body like nothing else. Members can burn up to 900 calories during the 60-minute session. But, what is most incredible is that clients continue to burn calories for up to 36 hours after each work out due to Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption (EPOC). The key is to get the heart rate up to at least 85% of the maximum and maintain that for 20 minutes. “Everyone wears a heart rate monitor that is projected onto a bar graph on a giant screen, so you and the fitness coach can watch your progress throughout the work out session,” explains Hirsch. “Our personal trainers work with you at your own pace and push you to achieve your goals.” That’s the beauty of this program; members have all the motivational benefits of a group work out with the personalized attention of a one-on-one training session. While everyone completes the same intervals, rotating through the cardio and strength training sets, each client works at his or her own pace. Anyone of any level can take part in any Orangetheory Fitness class. Despite the intense work out, after you are done you feel refreshed and energized. In fact, that’s how the company got its name. According to color theory, each color stimulates a different psychological response and orange elicits energy. With brightly colored orange walls, the studio was designed to inspire strength and make you feel energized and focused. Orangetheory Fitness also keeps clients focused through its fitness challenges. In celebration of the studio’s grand opening over the summer, it hosted a Six Week Fitness Challenge. Member Logan Bell lost 32 pounds and won $2500. More challenges are planned.

The personal trainers at Orangetheory Fitness are ready to help you achieve your fitness goals.

Orangetheory Fitness Challenge winner Logan Bell (center) accepts his $2500 prize check from Studio Manager Cristina Weaver (left), Orangetheory Fitness Owner Gary Hirsch, Personal Trainer Mariela Guardia, and Co-Owner Roni Cohen. Logan lost 32 pounds in six weeks with the Orangetheory Fitness work out.

If you are ready to try this unique group-based personal work out, as featured in the New York Times, try Orangetheory Fitness. “I love this work out and believe that everyone will have great results. There is no better feeling than seeing our members happy and achieve their personal fitness goals,” says Hirsch. “And remember, your first session is always free!” Orangetheory Fitness is located at 14918 Pines Boulevard in the Cobblestone Plaza next to Whole Foods. The studio is open daily with classes from 5:30-11:45am and 4:15-8pm on weekdays (until 5:30pm on Friday), 7:30-11:15am on Saturday, and 8:45-11:15am on Sunday. Pink Police

The Pembroke Pines Police Department showed its support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month by placing pink ribbons on each side of a police car. The pink ribbons have special meaning for the patrol car’s driver, Officer Tommy Burgs, since his mother beat breast cancer. “My mom took a lot of strength from the color pink,” said Burgs. “When she passed away from ovarian cancer, I had a pink ribbon tattooed over my heart.”

Knights of Columbus

The Knights of Columbus at St. Maximilian Koble Council 11410 of Pembroke Pines presented a check for $2120.86 to Schott Communities for Persons who are Deaf or Disabled. The check is from the proceeds of their annual Tootsie Roll Drive. “We are so fortunate to have the ongoing support of this extraordinary group of men,” said Frank Casale, Executive Director of Schott Communities.

Future Educators

The future of education is bright at the Pembroke Pines Charter Central Middle School Campus, where 31 students are members of the Future Educators Honor Society. Members must maintain all A’s and B’s on their report card and complete service hours by volunteering in the school community.
