community news Artists with Autism Display Their Work in Miramar By Debby Teich

group of young artists may have autism and other disabilities, but that has not stopped them from creating, displaying, selling and donating their own artwork. They belong to Artists with Autism (AWA), a networking group that helps members develop their artistic talents and provides ways for them to share their artwork with the community. The artists have displayed their work at the DisAbilities EXPO at NOVA Southeastern University, ArtServe in Ft. Lauderdale, the Melody of Hope Tour in Plantation and many other places. This month, they will exhibit at Miramar’s UniLatina International College, 3130 Commerce Parkway. The artwork will be on display for the entire month in recognition of Autism Awareness month. On April 15, the artists will be available to discuss their work. Cynthia Drucker founded Artists with Autism for her son Brandon, 19, who was diagnosed with autism when he was three-years-old. He is non verbal and has always used drawing as a way to express his thoughts and ideas. Two years ago she started the Ft. Lauderdale Asperger networking group to provide Brandon with an outlet to make friends and socialize. She noticed that many of the group’s members were very artistic and wanted to find a

rea residents have many “egg-citing” ways to celebrate the arrival of spring. This month, the City of Pembroke Pines will host Sundaes with the Bunny, as well as two egg hunts. The City of Miramar will host an intergenerational egg decorating party. On April 16, at 2 p.m., the City of Pembroke Pines will present Sundaes with the Bunny, a new event at the Southwest Focal Point Senior Center, 301 NW 103 Avenue. Participants can build their very own ice cream sundae with an “egg-ceptionally” big scoop of ice cream and a whimsical selection of 25 toppings, including Oreos, gummy bears, jelly beans, marshmallow, chocolate chips and more. They can also enjoy a holiday show and take pictures with Peter Cottontail. Tickets will be on sale for $5 per person for residents of Pembroke Pines and $7 for non-residents. Don’t forget to bring a camera. On April 20th, at 10:30 a.m., Miramar’s two senior centers and four Early Childcare Programs will team up for an egg decorating party. The colorful event is an excellent opportunity for creativity and sharing, and always ends up to be

On April 23, children 12 and under are invited to hop on over to the Annual Egg Hunt EGGstravaganza, at 9 a.m. sharp. They will be divided into different age groups before they search for more than 52,000 plastic eggs hidden at two locations (26,000 at each). Some of the lucky children will be able to trade their eggs for prizes. The free event includes an egg hunt, face painting and a visit from Peter Rabbit. Egg hunts will take place at the Pines Recreation Center, 7400 Pines Blvd., and Pembroke Shores Park, 501 SW 172nd Ave. Don’t forget to bring a basket. community news Prestige Club Reaches Out to Those in Need By Debby Teich

Last year, the club participated in 21 projects that made embers of the Prestige Club have been a difference in the lives of thousands of children and their making a difference in the lives of the less fortufamilies. n these very difficult financial times, think about our elderly neighbors who have to choose between taking prescriptions to stay alive and purchasing food for their existence. It is not a pretty picture. However, you can make a difference in the lives of our needy elderly population by donating non perishable goods at various designated drop-off locations in Pembroke Pines, such as the charter schools, police stations, fire stations, parks and recreations locations. I am asking that we do this for the whole month of April. The City of Pembroke Pines is partnering with the Pantry of Broward, Inc. to conduct a city-wide food drive to benefit seniors and grandparents in Broward County from April 1st through April 30th. The Food Pantry is a non profit organization that does a wonderful job of servicing our seniors who need help stocking their pantry shelves with nutritious food. You can make a difference just by providing non-perishable food products. Suggested food items for donation include canned and packaged food, macaroni and cheese, Hamburger Helper, Ramen noodles, peanut butter and oatmeal. Donations of store gift cards are also appreciated The Pantry of Broward is a non-profit agency that provides food and support services to seniors on a low fixed income, and grandparents raising their grandchildren in Broward County. The Pantry donates a nutritional 60 lb. food box once a month which leaves grandparents and seniors with more dollars to purchase their medications and other necessities. efore I get too far into my letter, I wish to congratulate our Miramar High School Basketball Team for advancing to the 2011 Florida Class 6A Boys Basketball State Semifinals. The team, led by Coach Kenneth Kelly, won their first regional title and advanced to the state semifinals for the first time. Through their efforts and the support of the teachers and students at Miramar High School, I am sure we will see much more from them in the future. The journey that the Miramar basketball team took to get as far as they did reminded me of how many people must have been involved. You can be sure that family, friends, neighbors, and residents all cheered together. I could imagine all of them traveling to witness the team’s great effort. It also made me realize what our city’s efforts truly should be --- everyone working together to make all our lives a little bit better. And while I firmly believe that is what city staff and our commission strive to accomplish, we will be challenged this year again. If you recall, many of my fellow commissioners and I advised that last year’s budget cuts wouldn’t be the last time we would have to make difficult decisions. We were informed by city staff that this upcoming 2011-2012 budget will be just as challenging and difficult. In fact, it will require us to make further cuts to an already lean budget. But we are not going into this unprepared. Through the foresight of city staff, we started planning for this budget year immediately after last year’s budget was approved. Your participation is vital at this stage. I encourage you all to provide your input and help us make decisions that will result in a better quality of life for us all. It has been said that a basketball game without sensible rules and tough referees would quickly deteriorate into bedlam. So would a government. But a whistle-happy referee can also spoil a game. Effective budgeting finds a balance between efficiency and innovation. Help us find that balance by letting us know what you want and don’t want. Legally Speaking Making Your Hospital Visit Safer By Howard Citron

lmost 100,000 people in the United States die each year because of medical errors in the hospital. To stay safe while in the hospital: ▸▸ Be sure an advocate — an assertive friend or family member — is with you 24 hours a day. When checking into the hospital, be sure to ask for and sign paperwork that gives your advocate(s) legal permission to know all the details about your treatment and to discuss it with your doctors and nurses. ▸▸ If you have a choice of hospital, choose one where your procedure or surgery is done often, not just the closest hospital. ▸▸ When checking into a hospital, make sure you tell them about all the medications you are taking — including herbal remedies, vitamins, and dietary supplements — as well as any medication reactions you’ve had in the past and any pre-existing conditions.

▸▸ Each time a nurse brings you medication, ask the following: What is it for? Who prescribed it? When am I supposed to take it? How am I supposed to take it (how often/how long)? What side effects are likely and what do I do if they occur? What should I avoid (foods, drinks, activities) while on the medication? Don’t be shy, and don’t worry about bothering the nurse with too many questions. ▸▸ Be sure anyone drawing blood, giving you a test, or administering a medication checks your wristband first. ▸▸ Make sure the hospital staff keeps things clean around you. That is absolutely critical to avoid infections. Hospital-acquired infections are a major source of hospital deaths. If anything falls on the floor, just leave it there for the hospital personnel to pick up. Be sure that nobody gives it to you — or puts it on your body. ▸▸ Insist that everyone who treats you or handles your food washes their hands thoroughly. Even if you don’t have a sink in your room, don’t be afraid to ask everyone coming into your room to wash their hands. You aren’t being nit-picky; you are being safe! ▸▸ Schedule inpatient surgical procedures for early in the morning, and try to do it on Wednesday or Thursday, if possible. Mondays often get backlogged, and Friday surgeries mean you will have the weekend staff caring for you. ▸▸ Avoid wrong site surgery. Prior to surgery, surgeons are required to sign their initials directly on the part of your body to be operated on. That’s called site verification. Make sure your advocate is there to make the surgeon do this. Diners can enjoy all-you-can-eat fresh sushi, raw bar, grilled steaks, gourmet entrees and delicious desserts for about $20; less at lunch. That’s because POC is constantly rotating what it serves, for freshness and variety. The appetizer selection includes Beef Carpaccio, Seafood Ceviche, Japanese tempura, Black Angus Sliders, and POC’s King Crab Cakes made with real Alaskan King Crabmeat. There are about 15-20 items on the salad bar including a selection of prepared salads. Choices include Seaweed Salad, Caprese Salad with fresh mozzarella and tomatoes, and Thai Shrimp Salad with juicy mango pieces. POC also offers a selection of homemade soups. Lobster Bisque and Miso are served every day, plus there is always a soup du jour. The sushi bar features over 30 selections of sushi (sashimi is served at dinner only) and skillfully prepared rolls each day. The POC House Roll features eel, avocado and tuna on the inside and tuna, salmon, whitefish and avocado on the outside. Chef Kevin Z really showed his ingenuity when he created the Coral Gables Roll featuring teriyaki beef with onions, cucumber and avocado, sprinkled with poppy seeds. Unique to POC in Coral Gables is a Grill and Carving Station. Here diners can sample different cuts of meat, including New York Strip, Churrasco Steak, Smoked Pork

Tenderloin, Juicy Prime Rib, and Grilled Chicken. There is also a selection of Yakitori (Japanese-style kabobs) and grilled seasonal vegetables. In the evening diners can indulge in Surf & Turf with a visit to the Raw Bar. It features Alaskan Snow Crab, Dungeness Crab, peel and eat shrimp, fresh oysters and clams, mussels, and spicy crawfish. POC’s entrée selection showcases its American Fusion menu. The hot buffet offers 25-30 selections including American favorites such as chicken wings and baby back ribs, as well as fish, pasta, and Asian specialties including POC’s famed Grand Marnier Shrimp. It has been Will’s lifelong dream to open a restaurant featuring a fusion menu. “My father was a sailor and when I was a child I traveled around the world with him. I always loved tasting different foods as we visited different ports of call,” shares Will. “That was my inspiration to open POC, which stands for Ports of Call.” Today, diners can sample foods from around the world at POC in Coral Gables. Because of the region’s large Latin population, the menu features favorite Latin dishes including Argentinean-style steaks, Colombian fried pork skins, Cuban Pork Osso Buco, fried plantains and Tres Leches; there is even a Cuban sushi roll. The international influences are most evident on the dessert bar, which features Panna Cotta, Tiramisu and Canoli from Italy, Crème Brulee and Chocolate Mousse from France, delicious Thai Doughnuts, along with assorted other homemade treats. Ice cream is another option, with eight flavors daily including one sugar free. The menu is not the only thing that differs between this restaurant and its “sister” in Weston. The Coral Gables location offers a buffet brunch. In addition to sushi and other entrees, it offers breakfast fare including made-to-order omelets, pancakes, breakfast pastries, and much more. It also serves $7 bottomless Mimosas and Bloody Mary’s. Another difference between the two restaurants is this one features a full bar. Guests can enjoy a selection of fine libations including the signature POC Mojito which features Tiku liquor, a premium Asian spirit. POC offers a Happy Hour with live music Monday through Friday from 5 to 8pm, along with two-for-one drinks. community news Miramar Residents Keep Moseley and Elect Newcomer Messam By Debby Teich

ast month, Miramar residents voted to let Lori Moseley keep her seat as Miramar Mayor for another four years and elected newcomer Wayne Messam for Miramar City Commission Seat 4. With nearyly 59 percent of the vote, Moseley won against businessman and former City Commisioner John Moore. She won by more than 500 votes which is almost 1 1/2 times the number of votes that Moore received. Moseley has been involved with the City of Miramar since 1995, when she was elected into the City Commission. Four years later she was elected Mayor and then reelected in 2003 and 2007. “Mayor Moseley has been doing a great job,” said Frank Brown, who has lived in Miramar for 12 years. “I am glad that she will serve another four years.” Political newcomer Wayne Messam won a close race for Miramar Commission Seat 4, winning by only 31 votes against newcomer Yvette Holt. John J. Murphy Jr. and Joe Romero also ran. Messam moved to Miramar ten years ago. He felt that its cultural diversity and sense of community would make it a great place to raise his own family. Wayne and his wife of 13 years, Angela, have three children - Wayne II, 13, and twin daughters Kayla and Kyla, 11, all of whom attend public schools in Miramar. “I look forward to the opportunity to make Miramar the best place in America to live, work, visit and play,” said Messam. The Mayor and the City Commissioners are elected at-large, with the City Commission designated by seat numbers. Both the Mayor and the City Commission are elected for four-year terms. Legally Speaking Is There Ever A Right Time To Loan Modify? By Omar J. Arcia, Esq., Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

n previous articles, we have outlined the pitfalls and disadvantages of most residential home loan modifications. Some of these include higher principal balances, the length of time required to complete the loan modification process, the temporary nature of a loan modification, and the high rate of default after a modification. However, there is a very limited set of circumstances under which a loan modification can work in favor of the homeowner:

▸▸ The Property is the Borrower’s Principal Residence - Most lenders will only consider a loan modification of a borrower’s principal residence. The rationale behind this is that a borrower is more likely to make all payments under a loan modification agreement in their family home, as opposed to an investment property. Indeed, the underlying purpose of the Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP) enacted in February 2009 was to help homeowners stay in their principal home. If you are struggling to loan modify an investment property or second home, you need to consider other more viable options. ▸▸ The Borrower Has Positive Equity or At Least Owes What the Property is Worth - As most borrowers are painfully aware, most loan modifications will not include a reduction of the amount you owe your lender, but may actually increase the amount owed. Agreeing to a loan modification with a higher principal balance may place the homeowner so deep in debt that he/she may never “break even” or realize any profit from the sale of the home. For this reason, it is critical that a homeowner have some equity in the property they are seeking a loan modification, or at least owe what the property is worth. ▸▸ The Mortgage Loan Does Not Contain Elements of Fraud or other Violations of Law - Discovering that a loan contains elements of mortgage fraud or violations of law could be critical in obtaining the best possible outcome for any homeowner. However, most loan modification agreements contain a provision where the homeowner releases the lender from liability for any wrongdoing in connection with the loan. A homeowner should never sign a loan modification agreement without at least investigating whether the loan contains elements of mortgage fraud or violations of law. In order to rule out the possibility of mortgage fraud, a homeowner should conduct a forensic audit of their home loan. Homeowners should stay away from online sites that sell inexpensive forensic audits, and even from law firms that offer to perform the audit themselves. This was the first time that the charter school held this fundraiser. Since 96 percent of the students who graduate from the high school go to college, it seemed like a good fit. The fundraiser was limited to 1,000 donations of $100 each and the school received approximately 430. The winner was announced at a drawing held at the January 2011 City of Pembroke Pines Commission Meeting. Gidwani was not present, so Kathleen Kuebler immediately placed a phone call to tell her that Sanya had won. ‘Initially she thought it was a crank call,” said Keubler. “Once she realized she had actually won, she started to cry. I feel so lucky that I was the one who got to place the call.” The Gidwani’s have been residents of Pembroke Pines since 2009. Their eldest daughter Simran is in kindergarten at the West Campus. They started the prepaid tuition plan for her when she was two. When their second daughter Sanya turned 2, they began thinking about enrolling her in the plan as well. “Florida Prepaid Plans are so important in helping parents secure a brighter future for their children,” said Gidwani. “Who knew a $100 donation and a little luck would secure my youngest daughter’s education. We feel so blessed to have won the raffle. When our daughter is ready for college, we will not have the anxiety of tuition costs and fees. Innovative Treatment Options for Uterine Fibroids By Rodolfo J. Blandon, MD, Cleveland Clinic Interventional Radiologist

lose to 75 percent of American women have uterine fibroids, according to the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. And nearly one-third of those women experience the severe and debilitating symptoms. Unfortunately, many women don’t know that they have fibroids and accept painful symptoms as a normal part of life. Cleveland Clinic interventional radiologist, Rodolfo J. Blandon, MD, answers some important questions about uterine fibroids and discusses innovative treatments. Q: What are fibroids and whom do they affect? A: Fibroids are benign growths in the uterus. They range from a few millimeters to many centimeters in size. African-American women and those with a family history are more likely to develop fibroids. Q: What are the symptoms of fibroids? A: Fibroids generally occur without symptoms. In most cases, they are discovered in routine pelvic exams. When symptoms are present, they may include: ▸▸ Heavy, prolonged monthly periods, sometimes with clots ▸▸ Anemia and fatigue ▸▸ Pain or pressure in the pelvis ▸▸ Painful intercourse ▸▸ Frequent urge to urinate ▸▸ Constipation or bloating ▸▸ Enlarged stomach area Q: What are the treatment options? A: Medical treatments include birth control pills and hormone treatments. Medications can cause menopause-like side effects and are prescribed to alleviate symptoms. Surgical options include hysterectomy, which is the removal of the uterus, and myomectomy, the removal of just the fibroids. While these options are generally effective, they require general anesthesia and a longer recovery period. Surgeries also carry risk of complications. A new option is uterine fibroid embolization (UFE), a minimally invasive procedure that preserves the uterus and greatly reduces recovery times compared to traditional surgical procedures. Q: What is UFE and how is it performed? A: UFE is a minimally invasive procedure that blocks the blood supply to fibroids. The procedure requires only a small nick in the skin and lasts less than an hour. An interventional radiologist inserts a catheter (thin tube) into an artery in the groin and then uses X-ray imaging to guide the catheter to the uterine artery. Tiny round particles are injected into the arteries that supply the fibroids. They block blood flow, which decreases bleeding and causes the fibroids to shrink. The particles remain permanently at the fibroid site. The process is repeated in your other uterine artery for complete blockage of blood to the fibroids. UFE is clinically proven to reduce the major symptoms of fibroids, including pain, excessive and prolonged bleeding, and frequent urination. Health & Wellness Memorial’s Leukemia, Lymphoma and Bone Marrow Transplant Program: “World Class Care” Close to Home By Dr. Lyle Feinstein

he Memorial Cancer Institute Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Program, under the direction of Dr. Lyle Feinstein, is the only BMT program in Broward County. Since November 2007, the Memorial BMT Program, located at Memorial Hospital West has performed nearly 50 outpatient autologous BMTs on patients with multiple myeloma and relapsed lymphoma. On February 18, 2011, Memorial Healthcare System received approval from the State of Florida for a certificate of need to begin inpatient autologous and allogeneic BMT at Memorial Hospital West. “The Leukemia Lymphoma and BMT Program will greatly expand treatment options for patients with hematological malignancies in South Florida,” said Dr. Daren Grosman, Director of the Memorial Cancer Institute Leukemia and Lymphoma Program. “Patients will no longer have to travel long distances to receive world-class tertiary care.” To this end, Memorial Hospital West is building a 40 bed leading edge hospital floor to accommodate patients with aggressive leukemias and lymphomas and those undergoing autologous and allogeneic BMT. The new unit is scheduled to open before the end of 2011. Autologous BMT involves the collection of a patient’s own blood progenitor cells prior to the administration of high dose chemotherapy. High dose chemotherapy is given to eradicate a blood cancer, and, in the process, the blood producing bone marrow is also eradicated. The previously collected blood progenitor cells are then reinfused to “rescue” the patient. The blood progenitor cells migrate into the bones were they create normal blood-producing bone marrow. Autologous BMT is mainly utilized for the treatment of lymphoma and multiple myeloma. Allogeneic BMT involves the infusion of blood producing cells into a patient from a well matched sibling or unrelated donor. The infusion of these blood progenitor cells gives rise to a competent immune system which is able to eradicate the patient’s malignancy. Allogenic BMT is utilized in the treatment many hematological cancers and non-malignant blood disorders. “I anticipate that we will be able to perform allogeneic BMT at Memorial Hospital West within the next 12 to 18 months,” said Dr. Feinstein. As part of a comprehensive BMT Program, Memorial established the only extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) unit in Broward County to treat severe graft-versus-host disease, a long term complication of allogeneic BMT. Allogeneic BMT recipients have traveled from all over South Florida to receive outpatient ECP at Memorial Cancer Institute. Lastly, the Umbilical Cord Blood Project, under the direction of Dr. Feinstein and Mary Roberts, EdD, ARNP, Director of Nursing for the Family Birthplace at Memorial Hospital West, was launched on November 1, 2010. For many patients with malignancies of the blood and/or lymph nodes, an allogeneic BMT is the only potentially curative option. Life-saving blood progenitor cells can be obtained not only from the bone marrow, but the peripheral blood and umbilical cord blood (UCB) as well. Unfortunately, siblings have only a 25% chance of matching, and the majority of patients who could benefit from allogeneic HCT do not have a matched sibling. Furthermore, greater than 10,000 patients per year in the United States are unable to find a suitable donor. Minorities are vastly under-represented in national and international registries. Approximately, 10,000 deliveries occur annually in Memorial Healthcare System. Fewer than 20% of these deliveries involve the private collection and storage of UCB. Until recently, the majority of these potentially life-saving cord units were discarded. Memorial now offers expectant mothers the option of donating Umbilical Cord Blood at no cost. Umbilical Cord Blood is collected at the time of delivery and processed. Suitable units are stored at Duke University where they are available eligible transplant patients worldwide. Umbilical Cord Blood donation is available at Memorial Hospital West and Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, and will soon be available at Memorial Hospital Miramar.

estled next to a gym and specialty grocery store in a Cooper City strip mall sits a treasure trove of rare finds in South Florida. The Cooper City Antique Mall has been in business for close to 20 years, and is recognized as one of the finest and oldest antique malls in Broward County. Owner Claudia Cayne says customers will find a unique array of antiques, to fit any taste or budget.”We are a true antique mall. We cover every aspect of antiques and aren’t limited to just a few things,” said Cayne of Southwest Ranches, who joined founder Dodie Cayne in November of 2010. Located at 9800 Griffin Road, the Cooper City Antique mall is spread out over 10,000 square feet and features the merchandise of close to 50 independent dealers, who offer all types of antiques from all periods. They carry fine quality antiques including furniture and decorative accessories that date back as far as the 18th century. Customers will also find jewelry, glassware, china & porcelain, collectibles, textiles, paintings & prints, lamps & chandeliers, architectural, iron & garden accessories. To ensure authenticity, the vast majority of their inventory are actual antiques (100 years or more) or vintiques which is at least 30 years or more. The store is displayed with in eye catching visual displays that transport you in both time and place. “I think from the moment our customers walk past the glass doors their whole mood changes,” said Cayne. According to Cayne, antiques are the original form of “green” and serve in direct contrast to many of the products created in today’s disposable society.

While the mall features items more than 200 years old, Cayne says many people today simply don’t think to save things. Several of their dealers specialize in art, that uses Repurposed Antiques. It is that experience and good name in the community that customers turn to when they need help dealing with the estates of a loved one. “It can be a very overwhelming time,” said Cayne. Under their guidance, they help families by either running estate sales or by purchasing their items to sell in their store. What oftentimes family members consider junk is turned into money as many artists use antique papers and household items as ephemera for artworks. As a service to customers who have large estates, they offer this service to help them with all their items, not only antiques. Additionally, they also offer a consignment program for antiques and high end collectibles. The piece will be displayed for sale in their showroom. Dining Out Mazza Offers Great Mediterranean Food Right in the Neighborhood By Debby Teich

t is a Mediterranean tradition for family and friends to get together to share small dishes called ‘Mazzas’ before they indulge in their entrees. At Mazza in Pembroke Pines, guests can experience this tradition and enjoy great food without leaving the neighborhood. The family-friendly is conveniently located at 15749 Pines Blvd., just west of I-75. Faris Bushnaq opened Mazza in 2007 to share his passion for food and dining with others. The restaurant has a warm, relaxing atmosphere and the food is bursting with flavor. The Greek and Lebanese dishes are cooked in olive oil and contain fresh vegetables, an array of exotic spices, meats that are marinated overnight in Mediterranean juices and other high quality ingredients. Many of the recipes have been passed down through the generations. “We want our guests to leave the restaurant feeling happy, satisfied and with smiles on their faces,” said Faris. And they do. Mazza has developed a very loyal clientele. Some of its guests come to try Mediterranean food for the first time and others are connoisseurs. Once they experience the restaurant’s quality food and fun atmosphere, they are eager to return. Guests are not the only ones who praise the restaurant. Mazza is Zagat Rated and has received rave reviews from online critics. It recently won opentable.com’s 2011 Diner’s Choice Awards in three categories: Ft. Lauderdale Neighborhood Gem, Ft. Lauderdale Good for Groups and one of Southeast Florida’s Top Mediterranean Restaurants. Most guests start by ordering an assortment of traditional appetizers to share. This is also a great way to sample the menu. Some of the most popular are the Drunken Halloumi (Cypriot Halloumi cheese that is lightly sautéed in ouzo and olive oil and served with tomatoes in a special Toom garlic sauce); Grilled Octopus (marinated in Mediterranean spices and drizzled with olive oil, garlic and fresh lemon juice) and of course the Hummus (a blend of chick peas, Tahini

sesame paste, fresh lemon juice and garlic), which Mazza may soon begin selling in stores. Mazza also offers 10 different salads. Most are intended as appetizers and include favorites like Tabouleh (chopped parsley, cracked wheat, tomatoes and fresh mint tossed in extra virgin olive oil, fresh lemon and pomegranate molasses vinaigrette) and Shaved Pear (field greens, shaved pear, candied walnuts and warm goat cheese tossed in a Poppy Seed dressing). The restaurant offers a large selection of entrees that include traditional Mediterranean dishes, as well as Petit Filet Mignon, Cowboy Steak, Grilled Salmon, Whole Fish, Grilled Chicken, Pasta and more. Many order one of the Signature Kabobs made with seven different types of meats, seafood and vegetable or something from the Rotisserie

(Lamb Gyro, Chicken or Steak Shawarma). Other traditional favorites include the Lamb Chops (perfectly marinated overnight in Mazza’s aromatic seven spice marinade), Grilled Skirt Steak (top grade outside skirt steak marinated in citrus juices and grilled on an open flame) and the Med Burger (handcrafted patty perfectly seasoned, stuffed with goat cheese and topped with roasted tomato and lettuce). Most, however, still manage to find room for desserts like Ashta (Greek phyllo pastry stuffed with a creamy filling, then topped with orange blossom syrup, rose water and topped with pistachios), Baklava (a rich, sweet pastry made of layers of Greek phyllo pastry filled with chopped nuts and sweetened with honey) and the Pistachio Ice Cream (served in a toasted almond basket with stuffed dessert dates). Most guests like to enjoy a glass of wine or beer with their meal. The restaurant offers wine by the glass or bottle and sells bottles of wine for only $10, Sun. to Thurs. It also sells a wide variety of beer, including some from Lebanon and Greece. On Fri. and Sat. nights, from 8 to 9 p.m., guests can get a taste of Mediterranean culture as they watch a traditional belly dancing show complete with fire eating. The free show is a treat for all ages. Many of Mazza’s guests want to experience the restaurant’s cuisine at the office or at an event. Mazza offers a Corporate Catering Menu with a variety of options for $12 per person, including Chicken Kabob, Greek Salad and Dessert. The catering menu is very popular with medical offices in the area that recognize that Mediterranean cuisine is considered among the healthiest in the world, since it incorporates olive oil, nuts and seafood. It contains all of the items from the regular menu in sizes suitable for parties as small as 6 or as large as several hundred. he Pembroke Pines Special Population Program 2011 Special Olympic Senior Basketball team brought home the gold during the February 4th and 5th games held in Cocoa Beach. Three athletes from the basketball team also received awards for Individual Skills. Robert Mingo and Ronnie Lane received gold and Casey Stewart received silver. The Special Olympic athletes will now start training for soccer. Pembroke Pines provides quality recreational and educational opportunities for individuals with special needs and individuals with varying intellectual and physical disabilities. More than 100 adults and children, ages 6 and older, participate in the programs which include softball, soccer, swimming, wheelchair basketball and tennis, specialty camps, special events, field trips and more. Participants are not required to be residents of Pembroke Pines. seen on scene GO-KARTS The City of Pembroke Pines Police Athletic League unveiled its newest program – Go-Kart Racing. P.A.L. Executive Director Joe Williams, a retired B.S.O. Deputy, along with Sergeant Lance Carman of the Pembroke Pines Police Department developed the racing program in conjunction with Xtreme Indoor Karting of Fort Lauderdale to provide something new and exciting for youth in South Broward, ages 9 to 17.

CAMP FAIR Children and their families enjoyed a day of fun with games, face painting, bounce houses, a petting zoo and free admission to IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame during the Funtastic Summer Camp Fair. Johana Galavis, President of the Funtastic Summer Camp Fair, gave out goodie bags at the entrance.

SLAM FEST The Supreme Court, a 4th grade team, finished in 1st Place in their division in the Slam Fest Tournament held in Miramar. The tournament

featured 66 teams from 3rd to 11th grades.. For the past four years, Miramar has been hosting USSSA Qualifiers that attract players from all over the state of Florida.

ART FESTIVAL Blue skies greeted 100 artists and over 15,000 art seekers during the two day 13th Annual City of Pembroke Pines Art Festival in the Pines, a Fine Arts and Fine Craft Juried Art Show held at the Pembroke Pines City Center.
