chool may be out, but that doesn’t mean we’ve slowed down. Between camp, sports and all the other activities our children are engaged in, plus our own busy lives, there is barely enough time left over to enjoy each other’s company. That’s a shame because summers are meant for spending time together as a family. It’s easy to get caught up in the commotion of everyday life. But instead of just shuffling from one activity to another, why not stop and actually spend time together partaking in one of the great American traditions, the family summer vacation. So let’s turn off the BlackBerry and disconnect the Internet for a few days. Instead, spend some time at the beach, visit the Everglades, read a book together, chat around a campfire, play a board game, see a movie, jump in the pool, or simply chill out in the backyard. Those quality moments together are what we and our kids will remember for years to come. So let’s enjoy the summer and each other! Sincerely,

Chiropractic? Why Not? Dear Friend, want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened!

I

“A Doctor’s Confession toWest Broward”

It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s a simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You Benefit from an Amazing Offer-Look, it shouldn’t cost you

an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 7/31/11) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $35. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell YOU THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT. Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Mylene and Nyrie – really great people. Our office is both friendly and warm and we try our best to make you feel at home. We have a wonderful service, at an exceptional fee. Our office is called Pines Family Chiropractic and it’s at 9841 Pines Blvd, Pembroke Pines, FL 33024. Our phone number is 954-435-4380. Call Jessica for an appointment. We can help you. Thank you. community news Einstein Academy Makes Learning Science Fun By Debby Teich

S

chool may be out, but there is still plenty for kids to learn. The Einstein Academy is hosting an academic science camp and there is no test at the end. The curriculum is designed to make learning science fun. The camp is open to all children in kindergarten through 8th grade. It meets at Miramar Regional Park, 16801 Miramar Pkwy., from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and runs through August 5. This is the fourth year of the camp, but the first time that it is sponsored by the City of Miramar. “We teach the kids how they can become more responsible with our resources,” said Camp Director Christine Todd-Gibson, who is also a 7th grade science teacher. “We also help them apply this knowledge to their own lives.” The two-week camps are based on the theme of “Living in South Florida.” From July 8 to 22, the kids will learn about “Investigating Alternative Energy.” They will research the amount of fossil fuel used today and learn about alternative resources that are underutilized. They will also take a field trip to a car dealership to learn about hybrids. From July 25 to August 5, the kids will focus on “Florida’s Theme Parks: Force and Motion.” They will study force, speed and velocity as they learn how to assemble a helicopter and then apply their knowledge to roller coasters. The course also includes a field trip to Boomers to ride the roller coaster. During the camp, the kids will be grouped into investigative teams. They will conduct research, identify problems in the community and come up with solutions. They will also have an opportunity to implement their action plans, which might involve writing letters, making posters or some other activity. Both courses will end with a theatrical performance. “The skits, songs and monologues are a fun way for the kids to express what they have learned,’ said Todd-Gibson.

The cost for each two week session is $220 per camper and includes activities, materials and T-shirts. Non-Miramar residents add 20%. There is also a $25 one time registration fee. Registration is available online at www.teaponline.com. For more information, call 954-816-6739.

The event includes a wide range of track and field activities, such as the shot put, long jump, 100- and 200-meter dash and javelin. This is the first time the City is hosting the event. For the past four years, the City has been the site for National Basketball Qualifiers and this year was no different. From Feb. to June, Miramar hosted a series of USSSA Youth Boys 3rd thru 12th Grade National Basketball Qualifiers at the Miramar Youth Enrichment Center and Sunset Lakes Community Center. The tournaments included anywhere from 100 to 150 elite teams which traveled from throughout Florida to compete against Dade, Broward and Palm Beach County teams while earning points towards the USSSA National Championships. For the first time, Miramar also hosted 175 teams for the USSSA Youth Boys State Basketball Championships from June 10 to 12. The winners will play in the national championship in Cocoa Beach, Florida, from July 1 to 4.

F

or the first time, Studio 18 in the Pines is featuring two exhibitions at the same time – “The Fine Line” and “We Got Dumped.” Both have been attracting visitors from all over South Florida. They are on display until July 29. We Got Dumped includes ten artists that address the theme of loss and endings, using dumpsters as the canvas. The artists include: Regina Jestrow, Jennifer Basile, Lori Pratico, Justin Vilonna (Indi), Richard Kurtz, Jacklyn Laflamme, Dawn Verheylewegen, William Bock, Debra Kaszovitz and Ana Aguerrevere. The dumpsters are showcased in the studio parking lot. The second exhibit, The Fine Line, showcases a group of uniquely distinct artists that followed Hover by Lance Gulseth their own trajectory to represent their quintessential mark and define the essence of line. Dawn Verheylewegen’s series of commanding graphite drawings solicit sympathy, compassion, hope, and ultimately love. Her accurate drawings of worldwide social and political subject matter propel the viewer to examine what part they might play to either individually and/or collectively affect the current global state of affairs. Icons of modern life often populate the narrative paintings of Jacklyn Laflamme. Everyday symbols which otherwise might go unnoticed are re-charged with volcanic like eruptions of color that catapult the viewer into kaleidoscopic sophisticated imagery. Laflamme chronicles her visual history unveiling the many paths that led to The Fine

Line. Ruben Ubiera’s consummate Post-graffism technique focuses on the technical aspects of line. He is supremely skilled and evidences fluidity in every medium he embraces. Whether he shows a finessed portrait, a passionate character brought to life by his expertise, or a sculpture using reclaimed materials to harness his vision, his goal remains constant - inspire new generations to create social awareness. Lance Gulseth’s interest in painting everyday objects has long captured his attention, wherein something ordinary transforms into an entity elevated to beauty. His serene palette and knowing stroke imbue both his portraits and landscapes with an elegant stillness. Venezuelan born artist Line vs. Shape by Ruben Ubiera Vaeta Zitman’s series “Nudity Allowed (no size limitations)” addresses the thrashing concept that contemporary women must be perfect. Zitman’s impactful adroitly painted images of voluptuous women cross the line and fearlessly redefine the concept of beauty. As an accomplished artist, she remains undeterred in the execution of how she perceives line. Studio 18 in the Pines is located at 1101 Poinciana Dr. Regular gallery hours are 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Mon. to Fri. and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sat. community news Pembroke Pines Resident Celebrates 100th Birthday By Debby Teich

M

ary Agnes Carey of Pembroke Pines has something big to celebrate. On April 9, she turned 100 years young. The Pembroke Pines Southwest Focal Point Community Center hosted a surprise birthday celebration in her honor. The party was held on May 26 during the Thursday Arts and Craft class, where Mary Agnes has been an active participant for over 15 years. She was surrounded by more than 100 friends from the Community Center, her daughter Mary McCarthy, 77, who flew in from Pittsburg, Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis and Vice Mayor Jack McClusky. The celebration included balloons, flowers, cake and many kind words. Arts and Crafts teacher Barbara Johnson shared stories about Mary Agnes and noted that she had never met anyone who had as steady a hand and made a finer stitch than Mary Agnes. “Her work is beautiful,” said Barbara. “She is so sweet and kind. Everyone loves her.” Mary Agnes was born on April 9, 1911 in New Jersey. She was one of four children raised in Philadelphia. She married her Mary Agnes Carey with Descanel Michel, Barbara sweetheart Jack in 1930 and moved Johnson, daughter Mary McCarthy and Suzie Felix

to Pittsburgh, PA where they raised three children. Mary is grandmother to four and great-grandmother to eight. “They all bring me the greatest happiness,” said Mary. Throughout her life, she has been an enthusiastic baker, seamstress and hostess at her bridge parties with her friends. In 1970, Mary and Jack retired and moved West Palm Beach where she began working at Richards Department Store. Mary’s husband passed away in 1982 and she moved to Hollywood. She became a volunteer at her church, Saint Boniface, and participated in classes offered by the local senior center. In 1996, Mary moved to Pembroke Pines where her involvement in the S.W. Focal Point Senior Center became the center of her social activities. She attends the Arts and Crafts class on a weekly basis. She is also an avid reader, enjoys crossword puzzles and is very skilled at card games. “Mary is truly an inspiration to all of us and we wish her all the best for her 100th year,” said Jay Shechter, Director of Community Services and Housing for the City of Pembroke Pines. ome thirty (30) states have enacted laws that ban text messaging behind the wheel. However, Florida is among a number of states where pulling out your phone to tap out a few characters while driving remains perfectly legal. In fact, Florida has no restrictions on texting even for teenage drivers or for bus drivers carrying passengers. The facts are clear that texting behind the wheel is extremely dangerous. So why is Florida still behind the times? Well, some Florida lawmakers have already been trying to introduce bills aimed at curbing texting while driving in the Florida legislature. One of the major anti-texting bills introduced last year would have made texting while driving a secondary offense, meaning a driver could not be ticketed unless pulled over for some other violation. Here, first time texters would face a non-moving violation and a $30 ticket; a second violation within five (5) years would double the ticket cost and would be considered a moving violation. In many states, drivers can be pulled over for texting as a primary offense, and fines or other penalties are much more severe.

Last year, 2,430 people were killed in motor vehicle collisions in Florida. Although this represents the lowest number of annual fatalities in over three (3) decades, Florida is still one of the most hazardous states for drivers in the nation, coming in third behind California and Texas. Floridians face a heightened risk from texters: the National Occupant Protection Use Survey from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that drivers in southern states were more than twice as likely to be seen operating hand held electronic devices than in any other area of the country. Tragically, most of the deaths caused by texting are easily preventable, and if a texting ban could help lower the number of victims, lawmakers should give it serious consideration. Just because there is no law on the books that currently bans texting while driving in Florida, you are by no means barred from recovering damages in a civil lawsuit from a texting driver. If a driver negligently causes an accident by texting, he/she can be held liable for any resulting property damage, costs of medical treatment, compensation for pain and suffering, and lost wages. Even worse, if a family member was killed by a driver’s careless texting, a wrongful death suit can help survivors recover monetary compensation as well as funeral expenses.

The Best Barbeque in South Florida

an you believe that summer is here already? What happened to spring? Did I miss it? Hurricane season is upon us again and there is so much that all of us need to keep in mind to ensure the safety of our family and our property. Hurricane preparedness is essential to all of us living in South Florida. All of the experts are saying that it is going to be an active season. I hope that they are wrong, but in the event that they are right, we have to be prepared. It means that you and I need Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis to stock up and prepare for 72 hours of self-help. Immediately after a hurricane the city may not be able to get out in the communities right away, which is why we ask that you prepare yourself, your home and your family for a hurricane. Our combination of experts, which includes our Police and Fire departments; public works, the hospitals, and Florida Power & Light, have been conducting homeowner association presentations outlining and detailing what every resident must do in the event of a hurricane. The City of Pembroke Pines has an emergency radio station 1670 AM that is operating currently with regular programming. In the event of an emergency, 1670 AM will be a major operational component in our efforts to communicate as widely as possible to residents in our community. I would suggest that you tag this radio station in your list of favorites. Many of the supermarkets, as well as some of the gas stations, now have emergency generators to help them stay open for business and continue to serve the community and prevent the chaos we had in the aftermath of Hurricane Wilma. The city will be prepared to help once the 72 hours are over. We ourselves have been practicing our preparation strategies to make sure that we are ready. So as a final suggestion, prepare now and store it, if you do not need it for an emergency, you can always use it in your daily lives. As always if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me by email at fortis@ppines.com, or call 954-435-6505.

ummer is finally here! I hope that my letter finds you well and safe during this time where we have the opportunity to be with our friends and families. The summers are special because it’s the time of the year when we can slow down a bit and catch our breath from our busy schedules. It’s also a time when we can reconnect with our loved ones to do and see things we often don’t have a chance to do during the school year. The City will be hosting a variety of cultural, athletic and artistic events that offer a great way to reconnect and spend Miramar Mayor Lori C. Moseley special time with family and friends. Music, dance, children’s theater, and the world- famous Pop Art will be alive and vibrant this summer. The numerous activities at our Miramar Cultural Center/ArtsPark will give you and your family an opportunity to experience the simple beauties of life. I believe that these types of activities can nourish the heart, soul and mind just as much as school. And I can think of no better time than the summer to share this with your family.

legally speaking Is There Ever A Right Time to Loan Modify? By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

I

n previous articles, we have outlined the pitfalls and disadvantages of most residential home loan modifications. Some of these include higher principal balances, the length of time required to complete the loan modification process, the temporary nature of a loan modification, and the high rate of default after a modification. However, there is a very limited set of circumstances under which a loan modification can work in favor of the homeowner.

The Property is the Borrower’s Principal Residence

Most lenders will only consider a loan modification of a borrower’s principal residence. The rationale behind this is that a borrower is more likely to make all payments under a loan modification agreement in their family home, as opposed to an investment property. Indeed, the underlying purpose of the Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP) enacted in February 2009 was to help homeowners stay in their principal home. If you are struggling to loan modify an investment property or second home, you need to consider other more viable options.

The Borrower Has Positive Equity or At Least Owes What the Property is Worth

As most borrowers are painfully aware, most loan modifications will not include a reduction of the amount you owe your lender, but may actually increase the amount owed. Agreeing to a loan modification with a higher principal balance may place the homeowner so deep in debt that he/she may never “break even” or realize any profit from the sale of the home. For this reason, it is critical that a homeowner have some equity in the property they are seeking a loan modification, or at least owe what the property is worth.

The Mortgage Loan Does Not Contain Elements of Fraud or other Violations of Law

Discovering that a loan contains elements of mortgage fraud or violations of law could be critical in obtaining the best possible outcome for any homeowner. However, most loan modification agreements contain a provision where the homeowner releases the lender from liability for any wrongdoing in connection with the loan. A homeowner should never sign a loan modification agreement without at least investigating whether the loan contains elements of mortgage fraud or violations of law. In order to rule out the possibility of mortgage fraud, a homeowner should conduct a forensic audit of their home loan. Homeowners should stay away from online sites that sell inexpensive forensic audits, and even from law firms that offer to perform the audit themselves. The Arcia Law Firm has worked with several qualified and professional mortgage auditing firms to whom we refer our clients. If any of these three circumstances do not apply to your current situation, you need to immediately stop the frustrating and time-consuming loan modification process and consider other options. Call us today if you would like an attorney from the Arcia Law Firm to review your case in detail to determine the best course of action. The Arcia Law Firm recently released a consumer DVD entitled “Fight for Your Home,” which is now available for purchase at www.arcialawfirm.com. When you schedule a consultation with The Arcia Law Firm, you will receive a FREE copy of this informative DVD. The Arcia Law Firm has represented hundreds of homeowners in our community in foreclosure defense and bankruptcy protection matters over the last 15 years. We welcome the opportunity to meet with you, and together determine the best possible direction to resolve your mortgage crisis. School News Sagemont School is Creating Champions By Stacey Bomser

T

he Sagemont School will be celebrating its 15th anniversary this upcoming school year. In such a short amount of time, the school has earned a reputation for continually creating champions: students who excel in academics, athletics and the arts. The Sagemont Lions were proud to take home two state championship titles this past year. Both the boys basketball and boys tennis teams won the class 2A Florida High School Sports Athletic Association State Championship. The Lady Lions basketball team also made it to states, but came up just a little short in the finals. 2011 Sagemont Valedictorian Zack McCourt was one of the school’s top tennis players. By taking advantage of Sagemont’s flexibility and solid academic curriculum, he graduated top in his class and on the courts. Zack maintained a 5.14 GPA with a full load of Advanced Placement classes and was ranked as the #1 Boys Tennis Player in Florida and #9 Boys Player in the U.S. He was recruited to play tennis at Princeton. Athletics is not the only arena where Sagemont is creating champions; its arts program is critically acclaimed as well. Pasadena Lakes Elementary Receives Tree for Winning Poster Contest By Debby Teich

or more than 10 years, students at Pasadena Lakes Elementary School have participated in the Annual City of Pembroke Pines Arbor Day Poster Contest, which is sponsored by the City of Pembroke Pines City’s Landscape Advisory Board. The school recently received a Gumbo Limbo tree for its participation. Six elementary schools participated in the contest for kindergarten to 5th graders, including Pembroke Lakes Elementary, Pasadena Lakes Elementary, Pembroke Pines Charter Central Campus Elementary, Lakeside Elementary, Pembroke Pines Charter East Campus Elementary and Silver Palms Elementary. Each of the schools received a tree to plant on the school grounds. “The contest helps to educate young students about the importance of trees in our community and our world,” said Anthony Burzo, City of Pembroke Pines Liaison to the Landscape Advisory Board. Gloria McCluskey, Landscape Advisory Board Chairperson, says that the trees will also help increase the City’s tree canopy. All of the students at Pasadena Lakes Elementary participated in the contest. In kindergarten to 2nd grade, students drew a tree and also wrote a few sentences about why trees are important. In 3rd to 5th grade, students painted a Chinese landJoshua Fernandez, Natanael Macias and Isabella Gonzalez dig a hole to plant a tree. scape, translated their

name into Chinese, and also wrote about the importance of trees. Art teacher Carol Hanin chose a poster from each grade based on composition, expressiveness, color and technique. She matted the pieces and submitted them to the Pembroke Pines Landscape Advisory Board, which selected the winning artwork. Three students from Pasadena Lakes won first place and received a $25 gift card to Toys R Us. They were: Lanie De La Milera, 3rd grade; Gabriella Pellot, 4th grade and Kiana Kidder, 5th grade. Natanael Macias, kindergarten, received a $10 gift card for winning 3rd place. Joshua Fernandez, 1st grade, and Isabella Gonzalez, 2nd grade, won ribbons for participation. The six students who won were given the opportunity to dig a hole and plant the Gumbo Limbo tree at school. “The students will always have a connection to the tree they planted,” said Hanin. “They have developed a good understanding of why trees are important and why we need to protect them for future generations.” Students prepare to plant the tree they won. legally speaking Some Common Questions By Evan Baron

F

lorida has very simplified divorce laws. Unlike some states which follow more traditional laws, there is no requirement that the parties separate prior to the filing of the divorce or even during the divorce. In some states there is a requirement that the parties live separate and apart for perhaps up to a year before a Final Judgment can be entered by a judge. It is not all that uncommon to have a husband and wife living under the same roof during the divorce. I have several clients who remain living together even after the divorce is finalized. This is usually done due to financial circumstances, especially when they are trying to sell a marital home and the money received from the sale is needed to allow each to obtain new lodging. Because no separation is required, Florida does not have “Legal Separations.” If a husband and wife decide to separate there is no court ordered plan as to time sharing or financial matters. There is a provision in the law which allows a party to petition the court for financial assistance without filing for divorce, but the court’s jurisdiction as to what can be addressed is limited.

The only real requirement to obtain a divorce is the six month residency requirement. One of the parties must be a resident of the state of Florida for at least six months prior to filing for the divorce. If one of the parties resides out of state it may still be possible to file in Florida, but the relief a court can grant may be limited and not include all necessary financial issues, since Florida may not have jurisdiction over the out of state resident. Residency is generally proven by a Florida Drivers license, but it is possible to prove it by other means, including a live “Residency Witness.” It does not matter where the couple was married in determining where to file. A couple married in another state or country can still fulfill the residency requirements if they have lived here for the required six months. Assuming the residency requirement is met, which county do you file in? The law states that the county where the couple last resided together is the appropriate county. If the parties have separated, it may not matter where they presently reside, since that may not be the last county they resided together. In addition, real property (a house) can only be addressed in the county where the property lies. Of course, if the parties can reach an agreement about the property, that rule will not be relevant, since it only applies to a judge’s jurisdiction. If the above seems somewhat confusing, I suggest you contact a family lawyer to better understand the law.

Florida Contractor Connection Makes Home Repair Easy

Soldiers Remembered on Memorial Day

By Debby Teich

H

omeowners often need a handyman for a small project or an entire crew to remodel a kitchen, but lack the time or resources to find a reliable contractor for the job. Now all they have to do is make a simple phone call to Florida Contractor Connection, Inc. to find a prescreened, licensed, bonded and insured contractor – at no charge. FCC is a premier home services referral network of dependable, highly skilled professionals in every field from painting, plumbing, and floor refinishing to complete room Owner Stephanie Citron visits a job site. renovations and home additions. As a property manager for some of South Florida’s finest residential communities, Owner Stephanie Citron spent many years searching for contractors to complete home improvements and repairs. She quickly learned how to weed out the bad contractors and home improvement specialists and began building a list of those who are reliable and do a great job without consumer complaint. Through the years, her friends and neighbors started calling her for recommendations when they needed work done in their homes and she was always happy to help. Last year, Citron started FCC so she could help other homeowners in South Florida. “It can be very frustrating when contractors show up late or not at all,” said Citron. “We take the guess work out of home improvement so homeowners do not have to spend valuable time searching for a qualified professional to complete a special project. We put them in touch with prescreened, highly qualified and reliable home improvement and service professionals.” Citron works with clients who are new to the area, or just do not have time to search for qualified professionals. She has helped clients find professionals for appliance repair, architectural design, carpentry, carpet installation and cleaning, crown molding, custom cabinetry, woodworking, deck/fence installation, painting, driveways, electric, flooring, air conditioning, home inspection and more. FCC makes the process easy by providing a concierge service, unlike many other online referral companies that simply match a zip code with a contractor. The service is free to use and there is no obligation to hire the professionals it refers. Clients submit their home project information and FCC contacts the most appropriate contractor for the job based on budget, project specification, scheduling, location, and craftsmanship. The contractor calls the client in a timely manner to schedule an appointment. If the proposal is satisfactory, the client hires the contractor and pays him/her directly. FCC stays in contact with the client throughout the entire project to provide additional support and facilitate communication between the homeowner and contractor. FCC also follows up with a survey to measure client satisfaction. Citron recognizes that FCC is only as good as its contractors, so she requires each one to complete a thorough screening process. In order to become a member of the FCC network, contractors must have proper licensing, bonding and insurance; provide at least five references; complete an interview; display a good attitude and professional demeanor; and be in good standing with the Better Business Bureau. Most contractors generate work through referrals and from repeat loyal customers and understand the benefits of being a member of the FCC network. They learn about projects that are suited to their specialties and within their geographical boundaries. “Our contractors go out of their way to do a good job and keep clients happy so they can remain in the network,” said Citron. “We are proud to represent such an outstanding group of professionals.”

n May 30, the City of Pembroke Pines honored United States Veterans at the annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Donnith H. Fletcher Park, 7900 Johnson Street. Pembroke Pines City Officials Mayor Frank C. Ortis, Vice Mayor Iris Siple, Commissioner Angelo Castillo, Commissioner Jack McCluskey and Commissioner Carl Shechter placed wreaths during the Memorial Day Ceremony. The ceremony also included a Presentation of Colors by members of the Pembroke Pines Police Department, as well as some inspiring words from guest speaker Reverend Peter Tokar. During the service, Beulah Fletcher Simon placed a flower on the wreath in memory of her son Donnith Fletcher. Toward the end of the Vietnam War, on June 30, 1970, Fletcher and seven other soldiers were aboard helicopters which were shot down. Fletcher received a posthumous Purple Heart and, in 1971, the City named the ball fields and park at Johnson Street after him. For information, visit www.ppines.com.

For Your Health

How to Treat Common Sports Injuries By David Westerdahl, M.D.

T

he Orthopaedic Program at Cleveland Clinic Florida provides quality, comprehensive care for a wide range of orthopaedic conditions and musculoskeletal impairments. Our orthopaedic team offers advanced care and procedures for numerous conditions including sports and acute musculoskeletal injuries and procedures like joint replacement surgery of the shoulder, hip, knee and ankle. Dr.Westerdahl, one of Cleveland Clinic’s sports medicine experts, answers questions on common sports injuries and the appropriate treatments.

Join us for free web chats to learn the latest information on health topics that matter most to you. Cleveland Clinic specialists will share their expertise.

Q: What are the most common sports medicine injuries?

A: The most common injuries are sprains and strains involving muscles and ligaments of the arms and legs. These usually occur in athletes who have improperly warmed up or who have sustained an overuse injury during play. Other more serious injuries include knee ligament or cartilage tears, shoulder instability, rotator cuff tears, and elbow ligament tears.

Live Chats Web Friday, July 22 Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) Uterine fibroids are the most common pelvic tumor. As many as 1 in 5 women may have fibroids during their childbearing years. Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) is a minimally invasive procedure which blocks the blood flow to the fibroids in the uterus, which causes them to shrink. Speaker: Kevin Stadtlander, MD Interventional Radiologist

Thursday, July 28 Lung Cancer Lung cancer is the second most common form of cancer in the United States and the leading cause of cancer deaths. The complexity of lung cancer treatment requires expertise from different specialists. The unique model of medicine practiced at Cleveland Clinic, whereby a multidisciplinary team collaborates on patient care, is most suitable for the diagnosis and treatment of this disease.

Q: What treatments are available for these common concerns?

A: For minor sprains and strains, the athlete can resume activity after a short period of rest, icing, and rehabilitation. These minor injuries can take several days to several weeks to recover. Allowing this time before returning to activity will help prevent reinjury. For more serious injuries, such a Meniscus/Cartilage tear or an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tear, surgery is usually required. When the cartilage or ligament is torn, the athlete’s knee may give way with activity, causing pain and swelling. Repeated episodes of giving way can further damage the knee.

Q: Can you explain the rehabilitation process after an injury has occurred?

A: For minor sprains and strains, the first phase of healing after injury is called the inflammatory phase. This is the body’s response to injury, which causes local swelling pain, and heat. The initial goal of rehab is to decrease pain and swelling with local ice, rest and anti-inflammatory medication. When pain is improved, range of motion exercises are begun to prevent stiffness such as following a knee sprain. A

re you making payments to foreign persons? If so, you might be deemed a withholding agent and liable to withhold the applicable taxes. Any U.S. sourced income that a foreign person might earn is typically taxed on a gross basis at a flat 30 percent rate. If you are supplying this U.S. sourced income and fail to withhold the necessary taxes, then as the withholding agent, you will be personally liable for the required tax, penalties, and interest (IRC§1461). A withholding agent is any person that has the control, receipt, custody, disposal, or payment of an item of a foreign person subject to withholding, including a lessee, mortgage, employer or payer of dividends (Reg. 1.1441-7(a)). In general, the withholding agent is the last person in the U.S. who handles an item of income before it is paid over to a foreign person. The withholding agent is required to deposit any withheld tax in a Federal Reserve or other authorized bank (IRC§6302). This person must then file an annual return on Form 1042 and Form 1042S with respect to each foreign recipient, making certain a copy of the Form 1042S goes to the foreign recipient. The withholding agent is personally liable to the IRS for any amount required to be withheld and is indemnified against any claims of the taxpayer (IRC§1461). In determining whether you are required to withhold taxes before providing the income in question, the first step is to determine if the payee is a foreign person. However, in the absence of documentation as to the payee’s status, the withholding agent may use a series of presumptions indicated in regulation 1.14411(b)(3) in reaching a decision about withholding taxes. A withholding agent relying on these presumptions will not be liable for any tax or penalties that may result because the payee’s actual residency was not as presumed. If the payee’s status is determined to be that of a foreign person, then evaluate if the income is effectively connected to trade or business. If it is, then the income is exempted from withholding as long as Form W-8ECI is provided to the withholding agent. Otherwise, the income is not exempted and withholding is required. If the withholding agent fails to withhold or under withholds, there is no defense that can be presented, such as another withholding agent failed to withhold or that legal counsel advised that withholding was unnecessary. However, a withholding agent may rely on documentation provided by the payee indicating that no withholding is required (e.g. the income is effectively connected W-8ECI or the payee is a U.S. citizen or resident). When the failure to file or withhold is a willful attempt to evade taxation, the withholding agent will be liable for penalties imposed under IRC§6672, in addition to the withholding agent’s liability for the underlying tax. Following due diligence on determining payee’s status and following the appropriate procedures to determine whether withholding is required may save you unintended tax liabilities and penalties. Jacqueline Rodriguez, CPA, holds a Masters Degree in Science of Taxation and is a member of the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants - Weston Chapter. She has more than 10 years of experience and specializes in tax compliance for J-1, F-1, H-2B, and E-2 visa holders and treaty based returns for Venezuela, Spain, Canada, Belgium and the UK. it’s their business Tooth Tales Treats Every Tiny Tooth Like It Is Precious By Debby Teich

T

ooth Tales offers comprehensive dental care for children, from infants to teens, and helps them develop beautiful, healthy smiles. The experienced staff works together as a team to provide state-of-the-art treatment and to educate patients and parents about preventive care in a safe, fun, and kid-friendly environment. The office also specializes in dental care for children with special needs, who require additional understanding and gentler care, and offers orthodontic care. It is conveniently located in Miramar, at 12781 Miramar Pkwy, Suite #306, just east of I-75. The office was designed with kids in mind. It is filled with diversions and most patients actually look forward to their dental visits. While kids are waiting in the reception area, they can play video games or watch children’s programs on the flat screen television. There is also a flat screen television in front of every dental chair for the kids to watch during treatments. Once they are done, they can take a trip to the treasure box or collect a special certificate if they do not have cavities. Kids also have an opportunity to do something in the office that is forbidden in most homes. Tooth Tales has an entire wall covered in a special material so kids can draw on it with erasable markers. The office also runs seasonal contests for its patients. Every month one boy and girl wins a gift certificate for guessing the right amount of objects in the jar. This month it is sea shells, which represents summertime at the beach. Dr. Chen understands that each visit to the dentist needs to be gentle and considers the individual needs of each child to determine the type of care. “Every tiny tooth is precious,” said Dr. Chen. He also recognizes that parents are an important part of the process and consults with them before determining and performing any treatments. The office has an open design, so he can interact with the patient and parents and spend as much time as needed with each. It also has two enclosed rooms for special treatments and procedures, which can be performed using “bubble gum air” (nitrous oxide) or conscious sedations. Dr. Chen is also on staff at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital for procedures that require hospital dentistry. Dr. Chen recommends that children visit when the first tooth appears or no later than his/her first birthday. “It is very important to take care of baby teeth even though they will eventually come out,” said Dr. Chen. “Decaying baby teeth can affect many areas of their young lives.” According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, dental cavities are the number one chronic infectious disease of childhood, with between 40% and 50% of children affected by tooth decay by age 5. Dr. Chen explains that it is nearly impossible to ensure a proper diet if children experience pain when they eat or hypersensitivity when they drink something cold. Additionally, dental pain is a leading cause of children missing school and can affect concentration during class. In addition, he says that keeping baby teeth healthy ensures proper growth and

placement of the permanent teeth below. “Baby teeth control the eruption and positioning of permanent dentition,” said Dr. Chen. “If they get infected, they can affect the permanent teeth in development. Losing baby teeth prematurely due to infection or trauma may cause space loss of future teeth. Starting with a good foundation will lead to healthy habits in the future.” He recommends several tips to help keep teeth healthy. Follow the rule of 2 by brushing twice a day for at least 2 minutes at a time. Avoid sugary foods, especially between snacking and right after brushing. Try to avoid giving your child a bottle or Sippy cup to help them fall asleep, since it encourages “sugar bugs.” Stop oral habits like thumb sucking or pacifier use by age three to avoid problems with facial and dentition development. Dr. Chen loves practicing dentistry and feels that it is his responsibility to use his skills to help others outside the office. He is of Chinese Jamaican heritage and was raised in Jamaica, a place that holds a special place in his heart. He volunteers in the Give Kids a Smile organization, as well as Nova Southeastern University’s Medical Mission, where he provides dental services to underprivileged patients throughout the rural areas of Jamaica. “I think it is important to give back to help those kids who can afford dental care or do not have access to it,” said Dr. Chen. Tooth Tales is located at 12781 Miramar Pkwy, Suite #306, just east of I-75. For information, call 954-236-5273 or visit www.mytoothtales.com.

Memorial Hospital Miramar Introduces Robot with Caring Connections

The World’s Favorite Newspaper

It could be called a two-way teleconference on wheels, or a remote-controlled, Wi-Fi “Examinator.” The new RP-7® Remote Presence Robot at Memorial Hospital Miramar allows physicians to be, at least virtually, in two places at the same time. With RP-7 remote technology, physicians at Memorial Hospital Miramar can consult with physicians at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, 15 miles away in Hollywood. Within minutes, the RP-7 can be at a patient’s bedside, sending and receiving realtime communications

While the patient and her family see the physician’s face on a monitor, the remote physician operates the joystick to zoom in and manipulate microphones and speakers for two-way communication over wireless internet. Image Courtesy of InTouch Health®

Described as resembling a TV resting on an upright floor waxer, the 5-foot-6-inch robot displays the physician’s face on a 15-inch LCD screen and purrs like a kitten as it scoots down the hall on its scrubs-blue motorized platform. From a desktop computer control-station at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, physicians use a joystick similar to a video game to wirelessly navigate the robot and maneuver its devices. The telepresent doctor speaks at a normal volume, gathering information from the patient and family members, and directing two-way video cameras, immersive audio recorders and built-in monitors.

Diane and Brian Amdur brought the Pines Miramar Town Times with them to the Colorado mountains.

While the patient sees the doctor’s face on the monitor, the physician can download electronic medical records, images and vital signs on the dual-screen computer monitors. With help from a bedside assistant the physician may check the patient’s heartbeat or breathing through a built-in stethoscope. Designed and manufactured by InTouch Health®, the RP-7 at Memorial Hospital Miramar is the first of its kind in Broward County and one of three remote presence robots in the state. According to the California-based manufacturer, the RP series robots are the only FDA-approved devices for performing remote medical examinations. About 200 RP systems are being used in more than 80 hospitals worldwide. Physicians who have used the RP-7 have been pleased with the video resolution and audio quality, as well as the degree of interaction allowed on both ends. Doctors have also found that patients and families quickly warm up to the bedside robot. Parents appreciate the around-the-clock access to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital’s medical staff, which features the largest diversity of board-certified pediatric specialists in the region. Since Memorial Hospital Miramar introduced the RP-7 this spring, its duties have concentrated on evaluations of children and infants in the Children’s Emergency Department and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. But the technology, which may be accessed wherever Internet service is available, lends itself to remote consultation and active patient monitoring in the numerous specialties and subspecialties offered by Memorial Healthcare System. Of course, the remote presence technology enhances, but never replaces, the personalized professional care of a doctor. The RP-7 extends the reach of Memorial Healthcare System’s patient- and family-centered care, connecting extraordinary physicians with the people who need them. Memorial Hospital Miramar is located at 1901 Southwest 172 Avenue in Miramar. For more information about the hospital’s programs and services, call 954-538-5000 or visit MemorialMiramar.com. Helpful Weapons for the Battle Against the Teen Power Struggle By Alina Gastesi-de Armas, MA, MEd, LMHC

I

f you are the parent of a teenager you are probably no stranger to the roller coaster of emotions that are characteristic of this age group. You are your teen’s best friend one minute and their worst enemy the next. These struggles also may come with the shock of your own emotional reactions. You may find yourself challenged by your ability to control your temper when your teenager pushes your unforeseen buttons. You may be troubled by feelings of guilt following an argument even though you intellectually understand that your teen is being unreasonable. There may be pangs of worry you grapple with over whether or not the limits you are setting are too strict or too permissive. Rest assured you are not alone; welcome to the world of the teenage power struggle. The intensity with which teenagers are dealing with and expressing their feelings can easily send the most “Zen-like” of parents into frenzy. Even if you understand adolescent development inside and out, this struggle takes no prisoners; teenagers will fight to win their independence. The battle is on and your best defenses are in the following weapons: Consistency: Choose issues wisely that follow a logical theme like safety, respect and/or responsibility. Develop specific boundaries around these themes. Inherent in living with a teen is the potential for daily upheavals and quarrels in an attempt to engage you in the struggle. Avoid this invitation by letting go of trivialities and

refocusing on specific premises. Use natural, logical, and enforceable consequences to offenses. Determine limits before giving the privilege since limits are much easier to administer and enforce than consequences. Adopt the motto: “With each piece of freedom or independence comes a bigger piece of responsibility.” Awareness: Teenagers are notorious for last minute plans that are often poorly thought out and leave holes for mischief or danger. Let them know you expect them to be forthcoming and that you will check out stories, talk over concerns with your spouse, family members and/or other parents, as well as ask enough questions to get the full picture of what they have planned. Your teenager’s sense of urgency should not distract you from your quest for information. Communication: Learn to speak in a calm but firm tone; once the yelling and screaming have begun the communication lines have shut down. Use a variety of methods to remain emotionally cool: take deep breaths, count back from 100, or take a time out. Remember the goal is to stay rational while helping them to make good choices.
