Happy Valentine’s Day!

I

t’s hard to believe that it’s February already. It

seems like just yesterday we were decorating the house for the holidays. Now it’s time to focus on another holiday – Valentine’s Day. This is the day we celebrate the special person, or people, in our lives – be that your spouse, partner or children. While we contemplate which gift we should purchase for them, we need to remember that the monetary value of a gift is a secondary notion. What’s most important is that the gift comes from the heart -- and there is no better gift than spending valuable time with the ones we love. This Valentine’s Day, be sure to give from your heart and enjoy each others company.

Girl Scouts Collect Cards and Snacks for the Troops By Debby Teich

Thousands of men and women are abroad fighting for our country 24/7. This can take a toll on soldiers, who are separated from family, friends and loved ones. Girl Scout Troop 11031 of Pembroke Pines recently participated in the second annual “Remember Our Troops” drive to help provide them with inspiration, hope and courage.

Girl Scout Troop 11031 collected cards and snacks for soldiers who lived/live in South Florida.

The girls set up collection boxes at Saint Mark Catholic School, where all of the girls attend third grade. The students donated a variety of dry snacks, including nearly 600 granola bars. All of the students, in grades pre-k to 8th, also created cards for the troops. The Girl Scouts delivered the snacks and cards to Kate Andrews at the Plantation Police Department Outreach Center, who shipped them to troops that lived/live in the South Florida area. Kate also included some photos of the girls in the package. “To the young ladies of Troop 11031, what can I say other than thank you so very much for all your hard work,” wrote Kate in a letter. “I can’t believe all the treats you collected. I can’t wait to send out the packages to A soldier sent the girls a shadow box framing of a flag flown in the troops.” hostile territory in Afghanistan. The soldiers have expressed their gratitude through numerous thank you letters and in other ways. Solders sent them handmade bracelets, as well as a shadow box framing of a flag flown in hostile territory in Afghanistan. One soldier even visited the school to thank them in person. “We cannot forget that our troops are still out there fighting on our behalf,” said troop leader Linda DeVarona. “The response from the troops has been so rewarding. They are so grateful for everything we have sent.”

like it is 1999. We have already made such great strides and we will continue to make every effort to find a cure.” In 1999, 16 teams raised $33,000. This year, organizers have set a goal for 50 teams to raise over $150,000. Debbie and her husband have raised nearly $50,000 since they started participating in Relay For Life eight years ago. “Relay is a great way to give back, because all of the money stays in the local area,” said Debbie, who is online chair for the event. “Medicine has gotten so much better in the past few years. I know we will find a cure.” Anyone can volunteer, form a team or join a team. The overnight event on March 1-2 will feature a variety of activities honoring and supporting those who have had cancer. Some of them include the traditional Survivor Dinner, Survivor Walk and Luminaria Ceremony. There will be nonstop entertainment and activities throughout the event, including a pie eating contest, Miss Relay pageant, cross dressing contest, scavenger hunt and more. “We hope everyone will come out to support the Relay,” said Francie Novo, Special Events Coordinator for the City of Pembroke Pines. “We should never have to say that there is no cure for a friend or family member who has cancer.”

his year 1.5 million people will hear the

dreaded words, “You have cancer.” After surviving a stroke at 19, Debbie Hoch heard them nine years ago when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in her 40’s. She has undergone extensive treatment and survived. Her sister-in-law, also diagnosed with ovarian cancer, was not as lucky. On March 1, Debbie will join thousands of others who have been touched by cancer on the athletic field at Walter C Young Middle School for the 15th Annual Relay For Life of Pembroke Pines. The 18-hour overnight event, for ages 3 to 93, will begin at 7pm and last all night, because cancer never sleeps. Relay For Life is the nationwide signature event of the American Cancer Society. It is NOT just a race or walk. Teams of people and individuals have fun while raising funds to fight cancer and increase awareness of cancer prevention and treatment. The event gives participants a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. Survivor Debbie Hoch, with her husband, Scott. Jules Meyer, one of the original founders, will co-chair the Relay event with WPLG Channel 10 news anchor Kristi Kruger. Mayor Frank C. TAG Level 4 Team Wins USAG State Championship For the second year in a row the TAG USA team wins the 2012-13 USAG Florida State Championships for Level 4 Gymnastics. Over 60 gyms competed for the Level 4 Florida championship on December 8-9, 2012 in Manatee, Florida. The TAG USA team beat other gymnastics powerhouses from Tampa Bay, Orlando, and Miami and achieved the top all around team score amongst all participating gyms in these championships. No other Palm Beach or Broward gymnastics center finished in the top tier. Just a few weeks ago TAG USA won the 2012-2013 State Championship for Level 3 Gymnastics, also for the second year in a row. This makes TAG USA the only gym that won multi-level State Champions two years in a row Owner Michael Zoldan believes that TAG USA’s quality of team coaches and hard working athletes has made the Weston gym “one of the best in Florida”. “We always wanted to build a program that emulated the top Florida gyms found in Central Florida.” Head Coach Leesa van Werven

The back-to-back State Championships has made TAG USA into the Home of Champions. Head Coach Leesa van Werven, a key contributor to her athlete’s success, loves to see the hard work and dedication of her gymnast’s pay off.

City of Pembroke Pines Sponsors Great Yards Landscape Contest By Debby Teich

I

n an effort to promote quality land-

scaping within Pembroke Pines, the City is sponsoring the Natalie Belmonte Great Yards Award contest. The City of Pembroke Pines Landscape Advisory Board invites all interested homeowners to enter their properties for award consideration. The deadline for submissions is April 16. The award was created in memory of Natalie Belmonte, a well-known resident and businesswoman who passed away in July 2011. “Natalie lost her life much too soon,” said Gloria McCluskey, Pembroke Pines Landscape Advisory Board Chairperson. “This award will help capture the beauty of the butterflies. It will also remind us all of the true essence of Natalie, who had a love of gardening and butterflies.” In order to qualify, the yard must have a butterfly component, as well as several other qualities. There will be five yards chosen; one from each of the four commission districts and one selected at-large. The Landscape Advisory Board will judge the yards in April. The winning residents will receive their awards at the May Commission meeting, in the spirit of Mother’s Day and to honor Natalie Belmonte during her birthday month. The contest will consist of five components worth 20 points each. These areas will be added together to reach the final score for the property. All entries must attain a minimum score of 70 to be eligible. The highest score per district will receive the award.

The five components are as follows: ▸▸ Butterfly component: This area judges the preservation of all stages of a butterfly’s life. It should supply food and shelter with the proper selection of plants, including: host plants, caterpillar food plants, butterfly nectar plants, and an area that provides about half a day’s worth of sunlight. ▸▸ Design and function: This area judges the overall design, use of texture, compatibility of materials, continuity, balance, and the overall function of the landscape in correlation with the use of the property. ▸▸ Maintenance: The focus on this section will be the overall view of the property’s landscape maintenance. Are turf areas mowed? Are planter beds kept weed free and edged? Is mulching and fertilization kept up? ▸▸ Florida Friendly Value: This section judges the selection and use of plants that have similar water demands. Mulching techniques will also be observed. ▸▸ Use of Hardscapes: This section judges the use of non-living additions to finish a landscape, such as fountains, ponds, statues, boulders, decks, mulch, stones, etc. Applications are available at the City Clerk’s office in City Hall or by downloading the application at the City’s website at www.ppines.com (The link is located on the left side, half way down the page). For information, call 954-432-7370 or 954-435-6501.

teaching them the skills that will help them become more successful in the workplace, as well as in life,” said Feuer. Feuer reinforces the relevance of subjects like reading and math by explaining how they might play a role in their jobs. He talks about the importance of community involvement, leadership, communication, teamwork and other skills that lead to success. The students have interviewed their parents or family members about their jobs and shared the information with the class. They interviewed each other to discover their special talents and interests and used the findings to identify the perfect job. They created a television commercial about the attitudes of successful people. At the end of the program, the students will visit a worksite to meet with the people who work there and learn about their jobs through hands-on and interactive activities. KAPOW is always looking for businesses or individual volunteers interested in participating in the program. “Volunteers have the ability to change a young person’s life forever in only seven hours,” said John Casbarro, who coordinates KAPOW in South Florida.

place. KAPOW is a national network of business and elementary school partnerships which introduce students to career awareness through seven one-hour professionally designed lessons taught by business volunteers in the classroom and visits to work sites. The lessons help students discover different jobs, what it takes to do them, and how to be successful in work and life. This year, 6,400 students from 62 South Florida schools are participating in the program. Yvonne M. Spector has been impressed with the program, since she introduced it to her third grade class at the beginning of the school year. “The program ties academic skills and concepts that children acquire in school to real world application for their future,” said Spector. “It allows the students to see the importance of what they are learning and how everything they learn now will help them to succeed.” Louis Feuer, health care sales and marketing consultant, visits with Spector’s class each month to present the KAPOW material and lead related activities. “I always look KAPOW volunteer Louis Feuer with students in Yvonne M. International School of Broward Offers French/English Immersion Track By Debby Teich

iving in South Florida, many find it helpful to be able to com-

municate fluently in at least two languages. The International School of Broward (ISB), a tuition-free charter school, offers middle and high students, who reside in Broward County, the option to learn Spanish or French through their senior year. Students can choose the English track or the French/English Language Immersion track. Open since 2007, ISB serves approximately 300 students in grades 6-12. They represent a variety of nationalities from North America, South America, Asia, Africa, and many islands in between. They benefit from hands-on instruction, international competitions, unique field trips, college fairs and tours, and an enrichment based after school program. “We have amazing teachers and staff that go above and beyond,” said Michelle Garay, principal. “At a small school such as ours, students are able to receive the equivalent of a private school education, with small class sizes, and a lot of attention.” Many students choose the English track, which is similar to traditional schools. Students take math, English, social studies, science, PE, drama, dance, musical theater and art, as well as French and/or Spanish. They are able to complete six years of a language, if they start taking one in 6th grade. ISB also offers four different types of diplomas on the French track. These diplomas give access to the French university system, as well as universities in the European

18

Union, based on the course of study and type of diploma. ISB offers the BFA - Baccalauréat Franco Américain (French-American Baccalaureate), which is the result of collaboration between the French Ministry of Education and the College Board. This diploma allows students to obtain an internationally recognized, high level, high school diploma which integrates the most challenging coursework from both the American system and the French system. Students earn a significant amount of college credit, thus saving time and money during the college years. The Baccalauréat Général, or the French high school diploma, requires that students select one of three options for their course of study. The S - Scientifique (Scientific) diploma affords students the possibility of entering the most prestigious scientific and medical universities in France. The primary focus of this diploma is math and physics. The ES - Etudes Economiques (Micro and Macro Economics) diploma is for students who want to pursue further studies related to the field of economics, such as International Business. The L Littérature (Literature) diploma focuses on the study of literature and art. It is for students seeking further studies in such fields as Human Resources and Communications. The International School of Broward is located at 3100 N. 75 Avenue, at the intersection of Pembroke Pines, Davie, and Hollywood.

Prevention of Skiing Injuries By Al DeSimone, M.D.

D

espite the lower incidence of skiing injuries

over the last several years, there are still more than 500,000 skiing injuries in the United States every year. Though foot and ankle injuries are becoming less common, knee ligament sprains and upper extremity injuries are extremely prevalent. We have also seen an elevated number of injuries involving the head and neck region, as well as the lower spine. After performing extensive research and giving multiple lectures on this topic, I think there are a number of pearls of wisdom to remember during skiing. Pre-season conditioning programs that include strength training focusing on flexibility and agility are recommended to all skiers to help reduce the incidence and severity of injuries. Though skiing instruction at the time of travel may lower the incidence of injuries, more specific injury prevention courses prior to going on a ski trip have been proven to lower the incidence of injuries.

Creating Beautiful Smiles with a Personal Touch Remember to acclimate yourself with rest, proper hydration and a high carbohydrate diet, as these elements will protect against fatigue. Most injuries occur within the first few days of skiing because most individuals progress very quickly to a high demand level of activity. To prevent injury progress slowly, avoid prolonged periods of rest and stop skiing prior to fatigue. Also keep in mind that late afternoon skiing has the highest incidence of injury mostly due to changes in skiing conditions. When looking for the appropriate equipment, consider age, height, weight and level of expertise, as beginner skiers should even consider a helmet. Assure proper binding adjustments, as failure to do so has been associated with a higher occurrence of skiing related injuries. Falling backwards (sitting on your skies) may often result in significant injury. Always try to keep your knees flexed and remain balanced on your skies. These are a few tips for all skiing enthusiasts of this season. Remember that safe skiing is always fun.

LOOk HOT

Report City Issues with a New App

this Valentine’s day

I

by Pembroke PInes Mayor Frank C. Ortis

want to let you know about a new program that

Pembroke Pines has launched that will benefit interactivity between our residents and city government. The City of Pembroke Pines has partnered with a third party provider, SeeClickFix.com, in a pilot program to provide citizens and businesses with a method of reporting issues within the city. SeeClickFix.com is an online web application that allows any individual to report non-emergency issues, such as graffiti, potholes or traffic safety issues, on a map for everyone to see. Today’s technology offers new tools to helping cities resolve and solve various issues easily and efficiently. Lunched on January 1st, the Pembroke Pines Technology Services Department has made the application available for residents and business owners directly from their smart mobile devices. Through a free application downloaded to a Smartphone device, such as an iPhone, Android or Blackberry, residents can take a picture of a problem (i.e. a pot hole), scroll down from a list of defined issues, and then hit send. The GPS in the Smartphone can pinpoint the exact location of the problem, or the person can drag the map marker or input an address manually. The issue will then be sent to the appropriate department, such as Public Services, Public Safety, Parks & Recreation, Police, etc. and a confirmation receipt within 48 hours will then be received. Residents can go online and track their issue and vote on other posted issues that need attention. The goal of the application is to combine involved residents with hard-working local authorities, so that neighborhoods can be made into better places to live and work. When residents take the time to report even a minor issue, such as overgrown grass, and then see it fixed, they feel more engaged and empowered in their local community. This application makes it easy and fun for everyone to see the problem, click the information, and get it fixed. Please note, however, if you have a hazardous situation which needs immediate attention (i.e. open manhole cover, etc) or want to report in-progress problems, please call Public Services at 954-437-1111. For issues of a time sensitive nature or a crime in progress, do not use Seeclickfix. Call 911 immediately. Just a reminder that our upcoming event Relay for Life to benefit the American Cancer Society will be held on March 1-2, at Walter C. Young Middle School in Pembroke Pines. This year’s Relay for Life, chaired by WPLG Channel 10 news anchor Kristi Kruger, and I as honorary co-chair, is so important for cancer survivors. My team is called The Mayor’s Gang. Many City employees— firefighters, police, teachers and general employees—participate to raise money to support cancer research and help cancer survivors. The City of Pembroke Pines and the American Cancer Society want to invite all residents to this 18-hour event to help find a cure for cancer. This overnight event features many activities honoring and supporting those who have had cancer. Activities include the Survivor Dinner, Survivor Walk, Luminaria Ceremony and team activities throughout the event. I am hoping that many more people in the community will participate by joining in the activities at Walter C. Young. Or you can go online to donate to this worthy cause through Relay for Life of Pembroke Pines at relay.acsevents.org and search for team “Mayor’s Gang.” If you have questions about the event, call our Special Events Coordinator Francie Novo at 954-435-6525 or email her at fnovo@ppines.com. We desperately need your help. If each resident donated $5 to this very worthy cause, Pembroke Pines would easily be #1 again in the fight against cancer. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me by email at fortis@ppines.com or my office at 954-435-6505

Pick Your Poison: Thumbsucking or Pacifier Use

A

By Dr. Maria Grosman

long with many other parents, you may be

concerned with your child’s finger sucking, thumb sucking, or pacifier use. The majority of children will have one of these oral habits until two years of age. The shadows of prenatal thumb sucking have been seen on sonograms for years. Newer 3-D imaging technology allows for vivid evidence of prenatal thumb sucking. Sucking is a natural reflex that helps to soothe infants and provides a sense of security. Problems arise when these habits are carried on beyond the age of two. This may result in a negative affect on development of the upper and lower jaws, as well as the eventual alignment of the teeth. The amount of facial/dental changes will depend upon the duration and force of the habit.

One common effect of a sucking habit is the formation of an “open bite”. This is a “malocclusion” (bite problem) characterized by a vertical space between the upper and lower front teeth. Another resulting bite problem is a cross-bite. This is seen as a backwards relation of the back teeth. The upper teeth will be positioned closer to the tongue than the lower teeth. Others may simply notice a “buck” appearance of the upper front teeth. Such conditions may possibly lead to self conscious feelings, social ridicule by peers and may result in speech problems or functional disorders later in life. We are commonly asked whether one habit is better than another. Pacifier use seems to be the lesser of the “evils”. We notice less constriction of the palate with pacifier use and it is the habit more easily broken. Put another way, we cannot simply throw out a thumb or a finger as may be done with a pacifier. In either case, it is of utmost importance that an oral habit is broken long before the eruption of permanent teeth which usually occurs between the ages of 6-7. Most children stop oral habits on their own or with the help of their parents’ positive “big boy/big girl” reinforcement. We recommend that parents remember to praise your child for not sucking their thumb/finger instead of scolding them when they are. Try to alleviate anxiety and insecurities that may be causing the necessity to soothe this way. Peer pressure of school aged children also helps the older thumb/finger suckers to stop. Home remedies include covering the hand with a sock, use of long sleeve night shirt with sleeves sewn closed, or rubbing aloe on the culprit thumb/finger. If attempts at habit correction fail or you begin to notice the dental/skeletal effects of these habits, it is advisable to consult with your local pediatric dentist or orthodontist. Prevention is the key! Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd., on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. I

t is difficult to try and sit down and write an

article this month without thinking about the events in Newtown Connecticut that occurred on December 14th. There has been much discussed about gun control and mental health issues. Hopefully, by the time this article is released, there will be some progress in these areas. As a family law attorney, one of the issues which somewhat jumped out at me was the fact that the shooters parents were divorced. It seems that in many instances when a young adult goes on a rampage like this, he/she comes from a broken home. I certainly am not suggesting that children of divorce households are more likely to be involved in this type of behavior, but I do think that continuing issues between the parents does lead to a greater likelihood that a child can suffer from some emotional problems. Please understand, I am not a psychologist and I am not suggesting that I am qualified to make any diagnosis, but approximately 30 years of practicing family law has allowed me to make several observations.

From what I read, the shooter in Newtown lived with his mother and had no contact with his father for years. Perhaps that scenario had nothing to do with his mental state, but it certainly did not suggest a loving relationship. It is important that parents going through a divorce always remember how their actions will affect their children. Unfortunately, all too often parents focus on getting even with their spouse and forget that the children are “in the middle” of the conflict. It is important for a child to know that they can rely on both parents for love and support. All too often this is not the case. Children are not to be used as “pawns” in a divorce. The law in Florida is very clear in that a parent who may be behind in the payment of child support cannot be deprived of time with his/her child(ren). In addition, child support cannot be withheld because a parent is preventing the other parent from exercising his/her time sharing. In spite of the possible financial issues which may be in controversy, time with each parent is essential. It is no longer uncommon for each parent to have equal time with a child. Unfortunately, often parents resist what is best for a child due to possible financial consequences. In Florida, one of the factors which affect child support is the number of overnight visits each parent may have. Instead of focusing on what is best for the child, it becomes an issue of how much will I pay or how much will I receive? Unfortunately, sometimes parents continue this battle long after the Final Judgment has been entered. Post judgment battles concerning the children can be just as damaging. I strongly urge parents to provide counseling for their children. Even the most “peaceful divorce” has an effect on the children. Just remember, a divorce isn’t only about you! If you know anyone who has questions about the above issue have them call my office for a free consultation at 954-385-9160.

hy Do My Feet Hurt In the Morning? What

is Plantar Fasciiitis? These are two questions I hear almost every day. The plantar fascia is a ligament-like band which runs from your heel to the ball of your foot. This band pulls on the heel bone which raises the arch of your foot as it pushes off the ground. If your foot moves incorrectly, the plantar fascia may become strained. The fascia can swell and its small fibers may start to fray--causing plantar fasciitis. The most common cause of plantar fasciitis is poor foot mechanics. If your foot flattens too much, the fascia can overstretch and swell. If your foot does not flatten enough, the fascia may hurt from being pulled too tightly. People who suffer from plantar fasciitis often complain that the bottom of their feet hurt when they stand and they experience this most often in the morning. Pain is usually felt on the inside of the foot, close to where the heel and arch meet. Pain can diminish after walking, but it can return after rest or prolonged activity.

Heel spurs and bursitis are related problems which may develop in response to plantar fasciitis. A heel spur is an extra piece of bone which may grow near where the plantar fascia attaches to the heel. The heel spur can form in response to the plantar fascia’s tug on the heel bone. Bursitis is a swelling of the bursa, or fluid filled sac, that reduces the friction between a ligament and a bone. Bursitis can occur if a swollen plantar fascia presses against a plantar bursa. How can you get relief from this pain? Your podiatric physician has the answer. If poor foot mechanics is the cause of your plantar fasciitis, custom made shoe inserts, also known as orthoses or orthotics, may provide relief. In addition, strategically placing tape on the foot can support the arch and control movement temporarily. If taping helps, orthotics may be prescribed. Orthotics are built from plaster casts of the feet and can control the way the foot moves. Other ways to reduce symptoms of plantar fasciitis include the use of aspirin, ibuprofen, and other medications as directed by your podiatrist. Severe pain may require prescription medication, injections, physical therapy, and stretching. As a last resort, surgery may be considered if other types of treatment don›t help you. The first step to feeling better is to consult your podiatric physician. Dr. Neal M. Bullock’s office is located at 17013 Pines Boulevard, in Pembroke Pines. For information, call 954 450-4200.

The Key to a Successful Loan Modification By Omar J. Arcia, Esq., Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

T

here are countless homeowners accepting loan modifications

in which their resulting payment is the same, and in some cases, actually higher than their original mortgage payment. Also, the resulting principal balance owed by these homeowners is far more than the home is worth, and even more than when they started the modification process. Still other homeowners end up losing their homes, because they are unable to complete a loan modification before the home is sold at public foreclosure auction. These homeowners were apparently unaware that the key to a successful loan modification is hiring an established law firm with an experienced loss mitigation department. First and foremost, every homeowner should know by now that just because you’ve applied for a loan modification does not mean that your lender will stop the foreclosure of your home. If you do not have proper representation in the foreclosure action, you risk losing your home before you can complete your loan modification. Despite what the bank representatives may tell you, the law firm representing the bank may have a different protocol to pursue the foreclosure of your home. We witness individuals in court lose their homes daily due to their refusal or inability to hire a qualified attorney to represent them. The attorneys at the Arcia Law Firm have been representing consumers in foreclosure defense cases for over 17 years, are familiar with all the available legal defenses in a foreclosure case, and have established credibility through years of successful practice throughout the State of Florida. In addition, the Arcia Law Firm is one of only very few law firms with a local in house loss mitigation (“loss mit”) department that works hand in hand with our clients and our litigation department to ensure that the loan modification is completed before the foreclosure. When preparing a loan modification application, it is important that it contain everything the bank’s loan negotiators are looking for, and that it be organized in a certain specific order. If items are missing, your application is passed and sent to the back of the queue to start from the beginning. This process can continue for months, and then you must convince a loan negotiator that you qualify under the various government and/or the bank’s own in-house loan modification programs. This complex cycle is where most homeowners get stuck for months without success, or where they become so frustrated they accept the first modification offered despite the terms being worse than the original loan (higher principal, higher payments, etc.). The key to breaking the vicious cycle, and obtaining a viable loan modification is to be properly represented by a law firm that has both an established foreclosure defense as well as a knowledgeable and experienced loss mitigation department. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new consumer-friendly DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home,” available for purchase on our website. If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a FREE copy during the appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team.

If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free consultation, or visit www.arcialawfirm.com for more information.

am often asked by patients who have had body

contouring procedures what they can do to maintain the results and continue to keep weight off to look good. The obvious answer as they know, but may not want to believe, is to exercise and eat less. But short of going through a severe calorie restriction that is required in the HCG diet, I recommend certain supplements to improve glucose and fat metabolism and to help lose weight, or to maintain a healthy weight without severe caloric restriction. As we age, our metabolism changes and hormone levels decrease. The effects of years of cellular damage from poor dietary habits and lack of proper nutrition become more evident. One such supplement is green coffee bean extract. This substance works by blocking the destructive elevation of blood sugar that occurs after meals. The compound that is present in raw coffee beans that controls excess blood sugar is chlorogenic acid. It brings blood sugar under control by reducing the release of stored glucose into our bloodstreams and stopping the creation of excess glucose within our bodies. Taking 350 mg. three times a day resulted in an average weight loss of eleven pounds over twelve weeks, with a fat loss of 92 percent of the weight. Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) has been shown in studies to reduce fat and preserve muscle tissue. CLA helps you lose weight faster by reducing fat storage introduced by your daily diet and accelerating fat metabolism within the existing adipose (fat) tissue. Similarly, L-carnitine is a naturally occurring amino acid which plays a vital role in the metabolism of fat. It functions as a transporter of fatty acids into the mitochondria, the metabolic furnace of the cell. Carnitine boosts energy by stimulating the body’s burning of triglycerides as fuel. L-carnitine allows the body to burn more fat. Another factor for patients who are unable keep the weight off once they have lost it, is the powerful effects of emotional stress and depression on the brain. This chemically triggers strong cravings for comfort foods and snacks. This is known as reactional hyperphagia. Emotional stress causes brain, chemical, and hormonal changes that decrease feelings of satiety (fullness) and promote the compulsion to snack. A saffron extract targets appetite dysregulation at the neurotransmitter level, inhibiting the compulsion – reward cycle. Research has shown that 176 mg. a day of a proprietary saffron extract decreased snacking events by an average of 55%, with a resultant weight loss in patients as well. Constituents in saffron extract are believed to increase serotonin activity in the brain which normalizes the biochemistry of appetite regulation. The pharmacologically active compounds in saffron are crocin and safranal. A proprietary extract containing these compounds uniquely targets appetite dysregulation to improve mood, reduce food cravings, and the urge to snack between meals. As with all supplements, there is no one “miracle” diet pill or weight loss remedy. No pill or supplement is a substitute for a balanced, healthy diet, including some degree of calorie restriction, low-glycemic foods, coupled with both cardiovascular and weight-bearing exercise. Patients should know that not all supplements affect each individual in the same manner. If you are uncertain whether you should be taking a specific supplement because of health conditions or medications you are taking, consult with your physician first. Get Heart Smart Your heart is only the size of your fist, but it is the strongest muscle in your body. It’s your body’s engine, and it deserves to be taken care of. Many people don’t realize that they are not living a healthy heart life. Learning the risks of heart disease can help you be your own heart health advocate.

What are the risk factors for heart disease? An estimated 17.1 million people die of cardiovascular diseases every year, according to the World Heart Federation. There are many risk factors that contribute to the development of heart disease. It is important to know that some risk factors, called “nonmodifiable risk factors,” cannot be changed, but some risk factors, called “modifiable risk factors,” can be controlled or treated. The more risk factors you have, the greater your chance of developing heart disease. And higher levels of each risk factor correlate with a higher risk for heart disease.

Modifiable risk factors Hypertension is the single biggest risk factor for stroke. It also plays a significant role in heart attacks. It can be prevented and successfully treated, but only if you have it diagnosed and stick to your recommended management plan. Abnormal blood lipid levels, that is high total cholesterol, high levels of triglycerides, high levels of low-density lipoprotein or low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol all increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. Changing to a healthy diet, exercise and medication can modify your blood lipid profile. Tobacco use, whether it is smoking or chewing tobacco, increases risks of heart disease. The risk is especially high if you started smoking when young, smoke heavily or are a woman. Stopping tobacco use can reduce your risk of heart disease significantly, no matter how long you have smoked. Non-smokers exposed to secondhand smoke increase their risk of heart disease as well.

Obesity or being overweight, especially if a lot of weight is located in your waist area, increases your risk for health problems, including high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, high triglycerides, diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Viviana Navas, MD Type II diabetes is a major Cleveland Clinic Florida, risk factor for coronary heart Cardiologist disease and stroke. Having diabetes makes you twice as likely as someone who does not, to develop heart disease. If you do not control diabetes then you are more likely to develop heart disease at an earlier age than other people, and it will be more devastating. If you are a pre-menopausal woman, your diabetes cancels out the protective effect of estrogen and your risk of heart disease rises significantly.

What can you do you improve your heart health? Know the risk factors, and be sure to talk to you doctor about the ones that apply to you. Take action to change your lifestyle, and work to prevent your modifiable risk factors from compromising your heart health. For the past 18 consecutive years, U.S.News & World Report has named Cleveland Clinic in Ohio the top medical center in the United States for the treatment of heart disease. Cleveland Clinic Florida is proud to be part of such an impressive legacy of outstanding patient care. Cardiologists and cardiac surgeons offer the same integrated and “cutting-edge” services for the prevention, evaluation, and management of all forms of heart disease that are available in Ohio. This is just one of the reasons why patients travel from around the globe to Cleveland Clinic Florida, their destination for healthcare.

To schedule a consultation, please call 800-639-DOCTOR, or visit clevelandclinicflorida.org/heart.

Physical inactivity increases the risk of heart disease and stroke by 50%. People who don’t exercise regularly are 1.5 times more likely to develop heart disease. That’s why exercise is such an important part of a heart healthy lifestyle.
