Spring is Just Around the Corner
A
round the world spring is welcomed as a
sign of renewal and progress. While this winter season did not bring any significant cold weather periods to South Florida, we were able to watch the news reports of snow and ice storms ravaging our neighbors in the northern states. Even as I am writing this editorial, the Northeast is bracing for yet another snow-loaded blizzard, and not the kind you get at Dairy Queen. While we hardly consider the winter season as beach weather, snowbirds from up north and visitors from around the world flock to Florida to enjoy our mild weather, our sea breezes, our white sandy beaches and everything else the Sunshine State has to offer. With spring break approaching why not spend some time enjoying the splendors of our state with a stay-cation. Where else can you see alligators in their natural habitat and Mickey and friends in their not-so-natural habitat – all in the same day? Where else can you get a sunburn at the beach during the day and endless entertainment all night? And where else can you go flats fishing on a secluded sandbar and go cruising the inter-coastal dining scene -- all on the same boat trip? Only in Florida! On this happy note, let’s enjoy all that Florida has to offer and let’s have some FUN.

Many Egg-Citing Ways to Celebrate Spring By Debby Teich
K
ids have many “egg-citing” ways to celebrate the arrival of spring. This month,
the City of Pembroke Pines will host Sundaes with the Bunny, as well as two egg hunts. On March 23, at 2pm, kids can indulge in one of their favorite foods at Sundaes with the Bunny, held at the Southwest Focal Point Senior Center, 301 NW 103 Avenue. They can build their very own ice cream sundae with an “egg-ceptionally” big scoop of ice cream and a whimsical selection of 20 toppings, including Oreos, gummy bears, jelly beans, marshmallow, chocolate chips and more. They can also enjoy a holiday show and take pictures with Peter Cottontail using their own cameras. Tickets will be on sale for $6 per person for Pembroke Pines residents and $8 for non-residents. On March 30, children 12 and under are invited to hop on over to the Annual Egg Hunt EGGstravaganza, at 9am sharp. They will be divided into different age groups before they search for more than 52,000 plastic eggs hidden at two locations (26,000 at each). There will be candy and small toys inside the eggs, as well as some tickets to trade for larger prizes. Kids can also get bunny ears, have their faces painted with bunny noses, and take a photo with Peter Rabbit. Egg hunts will take place at the Pines Recreation Center, 7400 Pines Blvd., and Pembroke Shores Park, 501 SW 172nd Ave. Don’t forget to bring a basket and a camera to the free event. Miriam Hernandez attends the event every year with her three children, ages 3 to 8. “My kids wait all year for this event,” said Hernandez. “They get to search for eggs with all of their friends and win some great prizes.”

Find the Perfect Gift at the Arts & Crafts Festival in the Pines By Debby Teich
M
ore than 20,000 people are expected to attend the
15th Annual Arts and Crafts Festival in the Pines, where they will have an opportunity to enjoy some art, entertainment, crafts and food. The free event is presented by the Pembroke Pines Arts and Culture Advisory Board and the Parks and Recreation Department. It will be held on March 9 and 10, from 10am to 5pm, at the Pembroke Pines City Center, just west of City Hall, at 10300 Pines Boulevard. “It is a great family event with something for everyone,” said Robyn Vegas, Cultural Arts Coordinator for the City of Pembroke Pines. The festival got its start when a small group of artists set up tables around the lake at the City Hall building and it has continued to grow. This year, over 100 artists will be featured in the juried show. They will be selling a variety of items,
including paintings, drawings, photography, wood, sculpture, glass, mixed media, plants, jewelry, fine crafts and more. The artists will have an opportunity to win $350 in most categories, as well as $500 for Best in Show. Last year, 11 artists won awards and cash prizes, including Peter Barreda for Best of Show and Pembroke Pines resident Lawrence Katso for Best Photography. This year’s theme is “Art Deco in the Pines.” Throughout the weekend, there will be a variety of entertainment, including dance groups, musicians and more. The residents of Studio 18 in the Pines will have a tent, where they will present live art demonstrations. There will also be a children’s tent with free art activities. The Food Truck Round-Up will also offer a large selection of food choices. For information, call 954-961-6067 or visit www.ppines.com. Kids Konnection Is a Success By Debby Teich
P
arents are always looking for fun things to do
with their kids in the area. Over 4,000 people got some ideas at the Annual Kids Konnection, presented by the City Pembroke Pines and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. “This event is always a huge favorite for Pembroke Pines residents and families,” said Francie Novo, Pembroke Pines Special Events Coordinator. “It is a great way for Pembroke Pines families to connect with our businesses and learn about the many services offered in our community.” Kids Konnection opened with a special presentation, song and moment of silence to honor the teachers, staff, and young children that lost their lives in the Sandy Hook tragedy. Teachers and students from the City of Pembroke Pines Charter Schools held balloons and photos for each of the victims. At the end of the ceremony, six doves were released and a plane flew a banner with the words, “In remembrance of Sandy Hook-Newton, CT.” The event showcased national and local businesses, as well as nonprofit informational and educational resources. Kids and their families enjoyed four hours of free, interactive, hands-on fun. They sampled food and drinks, jumped in bounce houses, climbed rock walls, browsed through “store fronts” without spending any money, participated in contests and/or raffles, visited with Swat teams, learned about fire safety, and more. Many of the kids brought their teddy bears for a free checkup at the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Teddy Bear Clinic. Area dance and karate studios provided performances and demonstrations.

YMCA Volunteers Make a Difference at His House By Debby Teich

Luther King, Jr., the YMCA is dedicated to fostering unity and equality in people of diverse faiths and backgrounds. For nine years, the YMCA of Broward County has honored the work and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. at an inspirational breakfast. This year’s event included special guest and keynote speaker Martin Luther King III. For the first time, several YMCA’s of Broward County, including the Pembroke Pines location, added a service component to the annual celebration to remind residents of the importance of giving back to their neighbors in need. The YMCA has been a supporter of His House Children’s Home, which provides care for abused, neglected and drug-exposed children in a home-like setting. In the past, it has provided financial assistance to group home parents, so that the children would have the opportunity to participate in Y programs and services. On January 19, the Pembroke Pines YMCA Family Center stepped up its level of involvement by sending a team of 80 volunteers to help clean up the interior and exterior of the home. “We thought it was important to share our YMCA volunteer contributions with the
His House Children’s Home, since they make such a difference for South Florida’s children in crisis,” said Leah Carpenter, YMCA of Pembroke Pines Board Chair /Administrator and CEO of Memorial Hospital Miramar. After a light breakfast with His House staff and children, the volunteers began cleaning and organizing The Garden, a future long-term home for girls who are victims of human trafficking. The Garden will provide them with therapeutic support, safety and restoration. Led by Leah Carpenter and Channel 10 newscaster Calvin Hughes, the volunteers helped paint, sweep, landscape, and much more. While they were working, a group of specially trained YFit Coaches kept the 70 children on site physically active and engaged with YFit games, like football, hula hoop and kick ball. After everyone enjoyed a full lunch donated by the Pembroke Pines Subway, the entire group participated in the games. The Pembroke Pines YMCA Family Center is located at 501 SW 172nd Ave., in Pembroke Pines. For information, call 954-727-9622. For information on His House Children’s Home, visit www.hhch.org.

invited guests shared their enthusiasm and love of reading with our young students. The students enjoyed many a great tail.” As the students listened to stories featuring animal characters, teachers helped them make the connections between fiction and non-fiction stories. Mary Jordan, Development Director City of Pembroke Pines Charter Schools, Police Officer Hyde from the Pembroke Pines Police Department
read the Three Snow Bears by Jan Brett. “The Three Snow Bears story was one of my children’s favorite books,” said Jordan. Pembroke Pines Officer James Hyde read the same story for a group of second graders. He had all of the students laughing, as he acted out parts of the story. Matt Wittyngham, a Pembroke Pines Charter School System alumnus, read Edwina the Emu by Sheena Knowles to a group of third graders. “The students were very receptive and engaged in the story,” said Wittyngham. John Casbarro, KAPOW Director, read Sam the Sea Cow by Francine Jacobs to a class of fourth grade students. He was very impressed with the students and had fun interacting with them.

Developmental Flatfoot in Children By Robert H. Sheinberg, DPM
D
evelopmental flatfoot is one of the most com-
mon conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system of children and teenagers. There is a tendency for the child’s flatfoot to be ignored or treated with benign neglect. The facts are that it is NOT normal, the majority of children do NOT outgrow it, and there IS cause for some concern.
CAUSES
▸▸ Ligaments in the arch which connect the bones together are loose, allowing the arch to collapse. ▸▸ Congenital bone abnormalities. ▸▸ Trauma to the tendons and ligaments in the inner arch. ▸▸ Tightness in the calf muscles, which aggravates the foot deformity.
SYMPTOMS
▸▸ Young children may constantly prefer to be carried by a parent or be put in a stroller due to fatigue in their legs. ▸▸ Leg pain, especially at night. ▸▸ Premature fatigue with activity, especially in young children or teenagers. ▸▸ Inner leg, ankle and foot pain with activity. ▸▸ Occasionally associated with inner knee pain and lower back pain.

▸▸ Lowering or complete collapse of the arch. ▸▸ Front part of the foot is turned out relative to the back part of the foot and the arch bulges towards the inside of the ankle. ▸▸ Knock-Knees. ▸▸ The feet, ankles, and legs just do not appear right upon examination when the patient is standing. ▸▸ A child that is overweight and lacks athletic ability. ▸▸ General inactivity or avoidance of activity in children. ▸▸ Abnormal shoe wear. ▸▸ The child or teenager does not run correctly.
▸▸ Complete physical examination of the lower extremity and spine to find the underlying cause. This includes examining the child’s gait (walking pattern). ▸▸ Physical therapy to strengthen weak muscles and loosen tight muscles and help to improve overall coordination. ▸▸ Occasionally immobilization of the extremity to loosen up tight muscles. ▸▸ Custom molded shoe insoles (orthotics) to help permanently support the foot and put it in its proper position. In most cases this will overnight correct fatigue and leg pain that the child experiences. It will also help to allow better performance in activities of daily living or sports. ▸▸ In some cases when conservative treatment fails, surgery can be done to help with the problem. Most often very simple procedures can be performed to give the child or teenager an arch, allowing them to walk, stand and run correctly and efficiently.

Legally Speaking CN
Parental Rights? By Evan Baron
10% OFF With this Ad
S
everal years ago, Florida modified the laws
pertaining to custody of minor children. The designation of “Primary” parent was removed from our laws in an effort to better equalize the perception of equality for mother and father. If the parties are going through a divorce and there are minor children, neither parent will be labeled the “Custodial Parent.” This more or less clarified the concept of Shared Parental Responsibility or coparenting. Moms and Dads are to be considered equal. However, this is not always the case. If the parents are not married and a child is born “out of wedlock,” a father must establish his rights in court. This is true even if the father is named on the child’s birth certificate. Florida Law states: “The mother of a child born out of wedlock is the natural guardian of the child and is entitled to primary residential care and custody of the child unless the Court enters and order stating otherwise.”

Therefore, unless there is an order from a judge declaring the father to be the father of the child, he has no legal rights pursuant to Florida law. Unlike a child born to a married couple, a father of a child born to an unmarried couple must establish his parental rights. Until such time as there is a court order, the father can be prevented from having time with his child. To establish those rights, a father must file a Petition to Determine Paternity. In the petition, the father is asking the court to recognize him to be the father. If in fact the mother agrees that he is the father, an order can be signed which will establish his rights. If the mother denies the father’s paternity, the court will require the parties to take a DNA test. Once Paternity is established, the father has all the rights and obligations of any father in Florida. These rights and obligations will be the same as if the parties were married. As a result, a Parenting Plan needs to be established which would determine time sharing between the parties. In addition, a child support obligation will be established pursuant to Florida law. If you have had a child and were not married, it is important to understand the rights and obligations each parent needs to establish in court. Until such time as there is a court order, these right or obligations don’t really exist.

base of the big toe that forms when the bone or tissue at the big toe joint moves out of place. This causes the toe to bend toward the others resulting in an often painful lump of bone on the foot. Since this joint carries a significant amount of the body’s weight while walking, bunions can be extremely painful if untreated.
How do you know if you have a bunion? Symptoms may include: development of a firm bump on the outside of the foot at the base of the big toe, redness, swelling or pain at or near the joint, corns or irritations caused by overlap of the first and second toes and restricted motion of the big toe.
Spanish Gymnastics Classes Available How do bunions form? Bunions may form when the normal balance of forces on the joints and tendons of the foot is disrupted . This may lead to instability in the joint and cause a deformity. The deformity is brought about by years of abnormal motion and pressure on the joint. They are caused commonly by the way we walk, our inherited foot type, or our choice of shoes. What can you do to get relief? There are conservative treatments for bunion pain as well as surgical options. Treatment options vary depending on the type and severity of each bunion. Identifying the deformity early on in its development is the key in avoiding surgery. Podiatric medical attention should be sought at the first indication of pain, because if left untreated bunions may get larger and more painful.

Using Chapter 13 to Keep Your Home and Other Properties for Much Less than You Owe By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
M
ost consumers are familiar with a Chapter 7 bankruptcy in
which all of the debtor’s assets are liquidated and credit cards and all other unsecured debt are wiped out. However, within a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, you will not be able to modify your home loan or any other amounts owed on any investment properties. Your lender even has the right to continue a foreclosure on your home during a Chapter 7 with permission from the court, which is always granted when the homeowner owes more than the home is worth. Many consumers, however, are unaware or unwilling to consider the immediate benefits of a Chapter 13 bankruptcy.
Unlike a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, under a Chapter 13 a debtor restructures his/her debts. A Chapter 13 debtor has the ability to repay over a period of 3-5 years, all mortgage arrearages, late fees and escrow shortages. All credit card and other unsecured debt can usually be negotiated down to about one percent (1%) of the amount owed, and you may even be eligible to reduce student loan payments, wipe out IRS debt, and even reduce your car payments. However, the most beneficial part of a Chapter 13 plan is the ability to remove all second mortgages, lines of credit and other liens (including homeowners’ association liens) from your principal residence. You may also be able to significantly reduce principal balances on investment properties, and pay off those properties in as little as just three years. In order to wipe out a second mortgage from your home, the amount owed for the first mortgage must exceed the market value of that home. As it relates to a debtor’s investment properties, under a Chapter 13 plan you are able to wipe out any second mortgages or credit lines, and even reduce the principal balance of the first mortgage on each property down to the property’s market value, payable at a low fixed interest rate, and under one affordable monthly payment. Once a debtor submits a Chapter 13 plan and stays current on plan payments, the lender cannot proceed with a foreclosure of any properties listed in the plan. If you owe more on your first mortgage than the home is worth and have a second mortgage, line of credit or other liens on that property, then you are a perfect candidate to file a Chapter 13 bankruptcy. If you also have any investment properties which are upside down in value, and would like to keep them because they are generating rental income, a Chapter 13 bankruptcy is the ideal solution to resolve your mortgage crisis instead of wasting countless hours attempting to modify your loans directly with lenders. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a FREE copy during the appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our legal team. Contact the Arcia Law Firm at 954-437-9066 to schedule your free consultation. Buttock Enhancement By Charles A. Messa, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.

started a craze for an enhanced buttock. Now flat or less protruding rear ends everywhere are being surgically enhanced into more shapely curves and feminine fullness. Besides this major attention focused on Hollywood leading ladies, more women everywhere are considering, or getting buttock enhancements – lifted, sculpted, or augmented. For one, more women are wearing tighter fitting clothing, such as low-cut sweats, workout pants and leotards, in public more often. In addition, a shapelier feminine figure is aesthetically more desirable. The popularity of the butt lift is not just a U.S. fashion fad. More and more women desire to enhance their buttock and thigh region to create a beautiful buttock shape and the very attractive sweep of the lower back, hips and waist. More than ever before, one of the most popular cosmetic plastic surgery procedures is buttock augmentation or the Brazilian butt lift. The reason is that women are unhappy with their buttocks. Their butt is too flat, too wide, or sagging. Clothing doesn’t fit or look good on them. They were either born like this, or lost the form and shape of their buttocks after losing or gaining weight. Pregnancy, or just aging alone, can also affect the size, projection, and profile of the buttocks. Inability to achieve perky buttocks and sexy curves through exercise and muscle toning has frustrated health-conscious women. There are a variety of cosmetic surgery procedures available for those who desire youthful, fuller, and perky buttocks, with a more sensual body profile. These techniques for buttock augmentation or enhancement vary depending on what is actually missing and what is the overall body frame and form. For example, there are many who are either genetically or by weight gain have developed “fat and wide” buttocks. Liposculpture can shape their buttocks and the surrounding tissues to make the buttocks rounder and more proportional to the rest of the figure. On the other hand, there are those who have “flat and wide” buttocks. In addition to utilizing liposculpture to shape their waist, hips and buttocks, fat injection or grafting is used to augment the buttocks and to provide fullness and projection. Because it also helps to lift loose buttock tissue, this procedure is also referred to as a Brazilian Buttock Lift. Contrary to the above, there are some with sagging buttocks who are not a candidate for Brazilian Buttock Augmentation. These are people whose buttocks sag as a result of massive weight loss, such as after a gastric bypass surgery. These individuals would benefit from a body lift procedure which removes excess skin and helps to lift their thighs and buttocks. During your consultation, Dr. Messa will review your treatment options for buttock contouring, augmentation and enlargement. He will discuss if you are a good candidate, surgical options and techniques, potential risks and complications of surgery, pre and post-operative instructions, and recovery course, as well as what to expect after surgery. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Society of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and consultant for Allergan Medical and has achieved Black Diamond Level as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. To schedule your complimentary consultation with Dr. Messa, please call our office at (954) 659-7760.

Act Now to Prevent Colon Cancer Preventing colon cancer may be easier than you think. Most cases of colon cancer can be prevented by having a screening colonoscopy. Colon cancer is one of few diseases where normal body tissue - in this case, polyps - actually turns deadly. Removing nonmalignant polyps during a colonoscopy procedure may prevent colon cancer from developing. Colon cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers in the US. It is also an equal opportunity destroyer, oblivious to gender, race or income. People at increased risk for colon cancer include those with one or more immediate relatives with the disease, an inherited tendency to form polyps, a long history of ulcerative colitis, or a history of breast or uterine cancer. However, they are in the minority. The disease occurs most often in those who least expect it. According to Steven Wexner, MD, chief academic officer and chair of Colorectal Surgery at Cleveland Clinic Florida, “Colonoscopy is considered the gold standard test for detecting and eliminating polyps. Other tests are simply less effective.” • Sigmoidoscopy: Only checks the lower portion of the colon. • Hemoccult test: Detects blood in the stool, but is often inaccurate, giving false negative reports to at least 50% of patients with colon cancer and false positive reports to many patients who do not have the disease. A positive barium enema requires a colonoscopy follow up.
• Virtual colonoscopy: Might be a substitute some day, but is now unaffordable. For this reason, it is now recommended by every major gastrointestinal society that both men and women have a Steven D. Wexner, MD, screening colonoscopy FACS, FRCS, FRCS(ed) Cleveland Clinic Florida, at age 50. Anyone at Chair of Colorectal Surgery increased risk should be screened by age 40 - earlier in some cases. The need for future screening tests is determined by the findings at the first screening as well as the patient’s risk factors. Some symptoms of colon cancer include blood in the stool and pain the lower abdomen. More than half of all people diagnosed with colon cancer have no symptoms at all, so it is simply not wise to wait for the appearance of symptoms. Do yourself a favor and schedule a colonoscopy today. It just might save your life. Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Digestive Disease team is comprised of colorectal surgeons, gastroenterologists, general surgeons and other specialists. They work collaboratively, in order to provide the most accurate diagnosis and individualized treatment plans for conditions such as colon cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s and Colitis, liver and pancreatic cancers, as well as many others. This team effort allows for the best outcome in patient care.

What You Need to Know Before Applying for Asylum By Elizabeth R. Blandon
W
inning an asylum case is an enormous relief.
The foreign nationals not only avoid returning to suffering in their countries, but also they obtain benefits in the United States. The U.S. government protects foreigners who fear they will be harmed in their home country on account of their race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in a particular social group. Those who are granted protection are known as asylees. They are entitled to work permits, travel permission and, after one year, they can apply for green cards. The help that an experienced professional can provide in an asylum case is enormous. According to asylumlaw.org, “While overall only about 20% of all asylum applicants ultimately receive asylum, those with a lawyer win as often as 80% of the time.” This article lists the information Blandon Law offers for free to those who are thinking about applying for asylum. These materials represent experience gained practicing immigration law full-time for over ten years. With creative use of the terms political opinion and particular social group, Blandon Law has won asylum cases for abused women, homosexuals, victims of gang violence, and those who would have been the subject of honor killings. Recent victories include helping foreigners from Iran, Honduras, Venezuela, Turkey and Moldova. My free eBook “Nine Things to Know Before Applying for Asylum” is available to anyone who requests it. The book explains the benefits of applying and how to improve the odds of winning. If interested, send your name and e-mail address to ERBlandonLaw@aol.com.
Comments on the fast-changing world of asylum law are posted on my blog, asyleesdaughter.blogspot.com. In addition, you can also sign up for a monthly newsletter through the law firm’s web site, www.Blandon-Law.com. To find out if we can help you, call Blandon Law at (954) 385-0157 and schedule a consultation. Ms. Blandon, who is certified as an expert in immigration and nationality law by the Florida Bar, has received the highest ratings from independent companies, including AV-Preeminent Attorney by Martindale Hubbell and 10.0 Superb Attorney by avvo.com.

and Costra Nostro in Italy. He was also retained by the Police Benevolence Association to defend correction officers charged with conspiracy to violate civil rights. After a two week trial in Federal Court, where the conviction rate is 95%, Attorneys David Braun and Ana Cruz won a complete jury acquittal.
he Braun Cruz Law Group is a boutique
litigation firm with a focus on Family Law and Criminal Defense. The firm works closely with clients to develop the best strategy for each case, from pretrial negotiations to the jury award. The staff is comprised of highly skilled, experienced, multi-lingual professionals who are dedicated to each client. With over 14 years of combined experience litigating in South Florida, attorneys understand how to get the results that clients need and deserve.

Attorney Ana C. Cruz
What are the firm’s areas of practice? The firm
practices in the areas of Family Law and Criminal Defense, in both Federal and State Courts. The Family Law practice includes divorce, alimony and child support modification, custody disputes, paternity, relocation and restraining orders.
What is the firm’s philosophy? At Braun Law
Group, clients always come first. With over 14 years of combined experience litigating in South Florida, we help clients obtain the best possible outcome in each case. We stay focused on the person we are representing, as well as how the case is affecting and will affect them and their family.
Attorney David Braun
How do you help clients with issues in Family Law? Family Law is
one of the toughest areas of the law for clients. They may never have been sued or gone to court. Often, they do not even want to get a divorce, but have no choice. Clients in this situation need an attorney that is honest, straightforward and above all, knowledgeable in this area of law. They also need someone that understands and feels their stress. From the filing of the divorce petition, to the entry of the divorce judgment, our law office provides the legal counsel and emotional support clients need during this difficult and complicated time. We develop relationships with our clients that are based on trust.
What is the firm’s experience with Criminal Defense? We understand that an arrest can present serious risk to a client’s business success, immigration status and political life. The attorneys at Braun Law Group handle both Felonies and Misdemeanors and have taken hundreds of cases to trial in Federal and State Courts. In some cases, we are able to fight criminal allegations before they are formally filed, resulting in a reduction or even elimination of the charges. There is a small window of time that this can be done. Once the charges are formally filed, then the best way to help a client is by preparing the case for trial. We work closely with clients to learn the case inside and out and to develop potential defenses that will weaken the Prosecutor’s case.
What are some notable cases? David Braun and Ana C. Cruz regularly
handle cases in Florida State courts, defending citizens with charges ranging from DUI to First Degree Murder. Throughout David Braun’s career, he has handled many sensitive cases, including Scott Rothstein’s Private Security Firm, which was charged with destroying evidence sought by the grand jury, and laundering money through the Gambino Crime Family

Rico, Ana Cruz obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in English at Florida International University. She studied law at Nova Southeastern University, where she earned her Juris Doctor Degree in 2005. Soon after, she began working as a prosecutor in the Office of the State Attorney, 17th Judicial Circuit, where she handled Misdemeanors. She was promoted to the Felony Trial Unit, where she handled every type of Felony offense, including first degree felonies punishable by life in prison. She had progressive experience in the domestic violence unit, where she handled domestic violence cases. She was later promoted to the Juvenile Unit as a Supervisor, where she handled Sex Crimes as well as all of the First Degree Felonies in her unit. In the Juvenile Unit, she supervised and trained new attorneys. In her career as a prosecutor, she has handled over 70 trials including over 50 trials by jury. She is licensed to practice in Florida, as well as in the United States District Court Southern and Middle Districts of Florida.
Describe the firm’s dedication to Family Law?
Ana Cruz developed a passion for Family Law after working in the Domestic violence and Juvenile units. She saw families and children who had ended up in the criminal system, because there were issues which could have been dealt with in family court before they escalated into arrests. She stays up to date with the ever changing laws by reviewing current case law on a weekly basis and regularly attending continuing legal education courses on Family law. She uses her extensive trial experience and great knowledge of the law to help her clients during difficult times.
What is David Braun’s background? Born and raised in South Florida,
David Braun is a graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas High School, University of Miami, and the Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad Law Center and Moot Court Honor Society. After working in the private sector doing civil litigation, he was offered a position as a prosecutor at the Broward County State Attorney’s Office, where he was in charge of thousands of cases in Broward County. He was promoted to the DUI division, where he litigated and trained other prosecutors. He then accepted a new position as the Lead Felony Trial Unit Prosecutor and tried all types of felonies, including white collar crimes, violent crimes, all drug offenses, and even first degree murder. For over four years he was continually recognized for his jury selection and trial skills resulting in an extremely high conviction rates. David Braun retired after four years and founded his own law practice focusing on criminal defense and litigation in both Federal and State Courts.
