t seemed this Florida ‘winter’ season had a num-
ber of cool days and even colder nights. But now, with the Easter/Passover holidays behind us and the kids back in school after their March break holidays, the temperatures are slowly creeping upwards and the A/C units are humming. It’s time to start thinking about what to do this summer. For kids, summer time means camp. We are blessed with a variety of different program options. From language camps to sports camps to music camps and even arts & craft camps, there is some sort of program available to appeal to every child. Many people are now planning where to go over summer vacation. Like my family, many of us have relatives and friends out-of-state or even in another country. Summer is always a fantastic time to go and visit, to re-connect, and to maintain a close bond with those we love. As South Floridians we love to visit different cities, climb mountains and travel abroad. Of course, our own state offers plenty of travel options from the azure waters and fantastic fishing in the Keys to the always popular theme parks in Orlando to beautiful and historical Saint Augustine. Wherever your travels take you, don’t forget to take along a copy of Pembroke Pines Town Times. It’s a great way to keep up with what’s going on at home while you’re away. Plus, if you send us a picture of you holding your magazine from your vacation destination, you might be the next winner in our The World’s Favorite Newspaper™ contest.

offers adults and children many opportunities to learn new skills or enhance existing ones. They can study under art teachers like Alan Baldwin, who brings a lot more to class than just paint and brushes. Baldwin blends old and new styles to inspire his students, as well as to keep them interested and engaged in the process of creating their own art. His classes explore the many levels of art, including art history, commerce, criticism, philosophy, ethics and more. Each week, the class views a short artist profile film and discusses the art-world concepts, the latest music, culture, etc. There is always plenty of laughter in the classroom. “Everyone is free to pursue their own projects, but if they need guidance on a new skill or ideas about where to go next, I facilitate,” said Baldwin. Baldwin, who is an artist and photographer, takes weekly pictures of his students’ drawings and paintings. He posts the photos to his Facebook page and Twitter to help Mia Maestre, a student at the City of Pembroke Pines Fletcher Art Center, works on a creation during a weekly class. She recently sold a piece to an art collector in Chicago.
students market their artwork. Recently, a friend of Baldwin’s from Chicago was so impressed with a painting by student Mia Maestre that he offered to purchase the piece. Mia was exited to make her first sale to a collector in Chicago. The Great Yards Contest in Honor of Natalie Belmonte By Debby Teich
I
n an effort to promote quality landscaping within Pembroke
Pines, the City is sponsoring the Natalie Belmonte Great Yards Award contest. The City of Pembroke Pines Landscape Advisory Board invites all interested homeowners to enter their properties for award consideration. The deadline for submissions is April 16. The award was created in memory of Natalie Belmonte, a well-known resident and businesswoman who passed away in July 2011. “Natalie lost her life much too soon,” said Gloria McCluskey, Pembroke Pines Landscape Advisory Board Chairperson. “This award will help capture the beauty of the butterflies. It will also remind us all of the true essence of Natalie, who had a love of gardening and butterflies.” In order to qualify, the yard must have a butterfly component, as well as several other qualities. There will be five yards chosen; one from each of the four commission districts and one selected at-large. The Landscape Advisory Board will judge the yards in April. The winning residents will receive their awards at the May Commission meeting, in the spirit of Mother’s Day and to honor Natalie Belmonte during her birthday month. The contest will consist of five components worth 20 points each. These areas will be added together to reach the final score for the property. All entries must attain a minimum score of 70 to be eligible. The highest score per district will receive the award.
12
The five components are as follows: ▸▸ Butterfly component: This area judges the preservation of all stages of a butterfly’s life. It should supply food and shelter with the proper selection of plants, including: host plants, caterpillar food plants, butterfly nectar plants, and an area that provides about half a day’s worth of sunlight. ▸▸ Design and function: This area judges the overall design, use of texture, compatibility of materials, continuity, balance, and the overall function of the landscape in correlation with Natalie Belmonte the use of the property. ▸▸ Maintenance: The focus on this section will be the overall view of the property’s landscape maintenance. Are turf areas mowed? Are planter beds kept weed free and edged? Is mulching and fertilization kept up? ▸▸ Florida Friendly Value: This section judges the selection and use of plants that have similar water demands. Mulching techniques will also be observed. ▸▸ Use of Hardscapes: This section judges the use of non-living additions to finish a landscape, such as fountains, ponds, statues, boulders, decks, mulch, stones, etc. Applications are available at the City Clerk’s office in City Hall or by downloading the application at the City’s website at www.ppines.com (The link is located on the left side, half way down the page). their time to immerse themselves in something they love. Recent casts have included performers who have headlined productions at Stage Door, Curtain Call, New Vista, Tamarac, Caldwell and Actors Theaters. They have been on national Broadway tours, starred in Hollywood films, and written and produced their own plays. Many have been nominated and selected as recipients of South Florida’s Carbonell awards. PPTOPA presents three shows annually and many of them have attracted as many as 4,000 people. Productions have included The Producers, Secret Garden, My Fair Lady, Sound of Music and many more. With a full orchestra, as well as professional sets, backdrops and costumes, the plays are expensive to produce. Some cost as much as $60,000. The theater raises money through donations and ticket sales, which range from $15 to $24.
f you have always dreamed of seeing a
Broadway show, the Pembroke Pines Theater of the Performing Arts (PPTOPA) can give you a taste of what it is like. It offers top-notch community theater at an affordable price. Through April 14, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown will be on stage for several performances. The fun, musical comedy will have audiences laughing out loud. You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown is based on the beloved comic strip Peanuts, by Charles Schulz. During the play, the audience experiences an average day in the life of Charlie Brown. His emotions range from wild optimism to utter despair, as he encounters Lucy, Linus, Schroeder, Sally, Snoopy and other friends. PPTOPA is the oldest continuously operating community theater in Broward County. It was founded in 1993 by a group of dedicated individuals who wanted to provide low cost, high quality live theater for the community, as well as opportunities for anyone interested in assisting in the creation of theater. The goal of the company has not changed since it opened 19 years ago. While technically an “amateur” company, PPTOPA productions routinely feature some of the finest actors and actresses in South Florida. They are teachers, attorneys, doctors, business owners and others who volunteer

ast month, the City of Pembroke Pines and the American Cancer
Society hosted the 15th Anniversary of Relay for Life Pembroke Pines at Walter C. Young Middle School. Co-chairs Kristi Kruger of WPLG News 10 and Jules Meyer, Founder of Relay for Life Pembroke Pines, teamed up this year with the Mayor’s Gang to help raise funds for the fight against cancer. Thirty-seven teams camped out for the 18-hour event. The crowd celebrated when the announcement was made that donations had exceeded the $150,000 goal. Since it
began 15 years ago, the Pembroke Pines Relay for Life has contributed over $2.2 million. The Mayor’s gang was the top fundraising team for the event. It raised nearly $18,000, in large part due to $12,600 check from Cutting Edge Industries. Tropical Financial Credit Union, which had a team of 27 employees, plus their families and friends, raised more than $7,000. VooDoo BBQ & Grill in Pembroke Pines raised more than $1,000. Cover Story
“Enriching the Mind while Reaching the Heart” By Debby Teich
G
ianna’s Enrichment Center is a fully licensed and equipped
facility dedicated to providing the highest quality of care for children, from infant to 12-years-old. The goal of the Center is to produce happy, intelligent, well-adjusted children. Classes include Infants/Toddler, Preschool, Pre-kindergarten, and After-school programs.
Gisselle Caceres, owner/director, answered some commonly asked questions about the Enrichment Center.
Why did you open Gianna’s? We opened Gianna’s, because we love kids. The Center is family owned and operated.
Why is it important for young children to be in the right environment? Children’s most important years for emotional, social and intellectual development are from birth through five years of age. They need to feel loved, secure and accepted as they begin their educational process, which will extend from early childhood. We foster the belief that it is during these critical years that a child discovers his/her unique qualities, self-worth and, if properly stimulated and guided, those of his/ her fellow peers.
Where did the name come from? I named the Center for my daughter, Gianna.
Is this your first Center? No. My mother and I have owned another center in Miami for the past six years. We opened the Pembroke Pines location last year.
What ages do you serve?
We serve children from infants to 12-years-old.
Can students enroll all year long? Yes. Students can enroll all year long.
What is the school’s philosophy? The Center offers
children a nurturing, educational environment. We recognize that each child has unique talents, learning styles and personalities.
What is the student/teacher ratio? Classes are kept to a low studentteacher ratio and often fill up quickly.
Describe the teachers and staff. Our highly-qualified teachers and
staff are committed to working within each child’s comfort zone to ensure optimal social, emotional and educational results. They represent a variety of countries, including Mexico, Colombia, Cuba, America and more. The teachers are always happy and smiling.
What sets Gianna’s apart from other enrichment centers? We
are the only Center in Pembroke Pines that offers free registration and a free week.
Describe a typical day. The kids start the day with circle time. Next, they
participate in music class, arts & crafts, and playground time. After lunch,
22
they listen to a story and take a nap. In the afternoon, they have math, science, reading, writing, and centers. At the end of the day, they go back out to the patio for a physical education class.
What classes do you offer for infants/toddlers? Through supervised
play in a planned, stimulating environment, toddlers rapidly acquire a foundation of basic skills and capacities during the first two years. Motor skills develop, early language begins, and traces of complex thinking appear. Important social and emotional developments occur, as the children interact with peers and adults.
Describe the preschool program. Preschool children enjoy spending
time with other youngsters their own age and becoming involved with group activities. Structured educational programs introduce them to basic concepts in language arts, math, science and social studies. We have specifically designed learning centers for individual and group projects that encourage children to make discoveries about themselves, fellow beings, and the world we all share and live in.
Describe the pre-kindergarten program. Pre-kindergarten chil-
dren exhibit growing physical and intellectual independence, made possible by acquired physical skills and complex language. We encourage creativity and present learning experiences as a healthy mixture of fun and challenge. Daily structured educational programs stress language arts, math, science, social studies and various skills. There are field trips and an end of the year graduation ceremony.
Describe the after-school programs. We offer a safe, stimulating after
school environment for kindergarten and elementary school children. They spend time finishing homework and also engaging in physical fitness and exciting games with special friends. We also help the children with their homework.
Do you offer VPK programs? Yes. We offer VPK programs. Do you offer before and after care? Yes. We offer before and after care. Gianna’s Enrichment Center is located 18433 Pines Boulevard, in the Chapel Trail Shopping Plaza, between L.A Fitness and Pediatric Associates, in Pembroke Pines. For information, call 954-430-9900. Giraffas Restaurant Introduces a New Concept in Brazilian Dining to Broward County
N
amed one of the top 10 Fast Casual Restaurants in the world by Travel & Leisure, Giraffas Brazilian Steak & Burgers introduces traditional Brazilian flavors and skillfully adapts them to the American taste buds. Their newest restaurant, now open in Pembroke Pines at 151 North Hiatus Road, is their first entry into Broward County .
around quinoa, a very healthy food that is traditional in South America, as well as pastas and Stroganoff, a reflection of the European side of our Brazilian heritage. Who would’ve thought Brazilian eat Stroganoff, right? But we love it! And we make it in our own special way. Why did you choose Pembroke Pines as your first location in Broward? CG: Good question. Pembroke Pines is definitely an up-and-coming city. It is trendy, hip and has a perfect combination of professionals, families and people from all backgrounds. That’s what Giraffas is all about: we are a kaleidoscope of culinary possibilities; so we thrive in diverse, cosmopolitan and dynamic places, such as Pembroke Pines.
An interview with CEO and Founder, Carlos Guerra sheds light into the unique Brazilian dining experience at Giraffas: What makes Giraffas different from other fast casual establishments? CG: First off, we are Brazilian and different from all the Mexican, Chinese and Italian restaurants that you find everywhere. We’re also not your “typical” all-you-can-eat and expensive Brazilian restaurant. We’re a fast service, casual dining restaurant that offers a great selection of Brazilian dishes and many American favorites, with a Brazilian twist. This means we put our very own distinctive Brazilian seasoning and cut our meats in a way for which we are known. With over 400 Giraffas in Brazil, what special dishes have you brought here to the States? CG: We actually run 410 restaurants in Brazil, and counting. As for our menu, I’m glad you asked. It is a very eclectic reflection of Brazilian culinary heritage, which is made up of European, African, Amerindian and various traits of American cuisine. Our menu offers a wide selection of dishes to please any palate, but our main focus is steaks and burgers, since Brazilian cuisine is known for its meat. We also offer amazing salads that are built

What is unique about Brazilian cooking methods? CG: The one aspect that describes our philosophy is how we bring out and enhance the natural flavors of the food, instead of altering or disguising it. We simply bring it to life. Our steaks’ only condiment is a little bit of salt. The secret of why our steaks and burgers are so good is the quality and special cuts of meat that we use. What choices are there for people who don’t eat red meat? CG: You can have a quinoa and greens salad. I promise you won’t go hungry. Quinoa is not only good for your body, but also filling. We also have a good selection of non-red meats, such as chicken, pork, salmon and tilapia. There’s always something for everyone at Giraffas. That’s our goal: bring people together around food. Healthy food.

Pembroke Lakes Elementary Dedicates New Outdoor Environmental Center By Debby Teich
M
ore than 100 guests
gathered at Pembroke Lakes Elementary for the school’s Outdoor Environmental Center Dedication and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. The garden was the vision of Rosemary Lester, who was the principal of Pembroke Lakes Elementary for ten years. She wanted to transform the area into a place where students could learn and appreciate their environment. Current principal, Sandra Shipman, will work with the students in the Environmental Club to maintain the garden. “A square sand lot in the center of our school has become a garden oasis due to the vision of Mrs. Lester and the donations and partnerships from our PTA, the City of Pembroke Pines, business leaders, and fellow educators,” said Shipman. Prior to the ribbon cutting, City of Pembroke Pines Commissioner Jay Schwartz
told the students that he was proud of their efforts to protect the planet and leave a mark on their community. He also told them that his school up north had an all-asphalt school yard. He reminded them how lucky they were to have an outdoor environmental center. At the ceremony, the Pembroke Lakes choir, led by Chorus Director Tim Carney, sang “Evergreen” and “All the Living Things.” Environmental Club Sponsor Jennifer Mally inducted 31 students, who promised to weed and watch over the garden. The kindergarten classes sang “A Little Seed” and a student read a poem she wrote about nature, titled “Welcome to Our Garden.” “This was a great example for our students to see how a vision can become reality,” said David Renshaw, 3rd grade parent that helped develop the concept for the garden. “We are all proud to have made a difference for our students and our environment.”

What is Income? By Evan Baron

are usually the main issue in the case. Finances are considered in determining the division of assets and liabilities (equitable distribution), child support and alimony. In most instances, determining a spouse’s income is not very difficult. Tax returns, w-2’s and pay stubs can assist in determining a person’s yearly income. However, not everyone is a salaried employee who gets paid on either a yearly salary or standard 40 hour work week. There are many people who work on commission or have a large part of their income paid in either quarterly or yearly bonuses. So are these bonuses income? How do we determine income when a bonus is not guaranteed or a commissioned sales person cannot predict how his year will be? In determining child support, each parent’s income must be considered to calculate the monthly support. It cannot be recalculated each month depending on an individual’s income which may vary based on sales totals or bonuses. Income is actually defined by Florida Statutes as follows: ▸▸ Salary or wages. ▸▸ Bonuses, commissions, allowances, overtime, tips, and other similar payments. ▸▸ Business income from sources such as self-employment, partnership, close corporations, and independent contracts. “Business income” means gross receipts minus ordinary and necessary expenses required to produce income. ▸▸ Disability benefits. ▸▸ All workers’ compensation benefits and settlements. ▸▸ Reemployment assistance or unemployment compensation. ▸▸ Pension, retirement, or annuity payments. ▸▸ Social security benefits. ▸▸ Spousal support received from a previous marriage or court ordered in the marriage before the court. ▸▸ Interest and dividends. ▸▸ Rental income, which is gross receipts minus ordinary and necessary expenses required to produce the income. ▸▸ Income from royalties, trusts, or estates. ▸▸ Reimbursed expenses or in kind payments to the extent that they reduce living expenses. ▸▸ Gains derived from dealings in property, unless the gain is nonrecurring. The above clearly shows that income is not just what a person may bring home each week in a check. Car allowances, for instance, would be considered reimbursed expenses or in kind payments, which must be considered as income. I am often asked whether overtime (again never guaranteed) is income. The answer is “yes” and it will be considered when determining child support. Of course, if overtime is no longer available because of economic conditions, then it should be considered as well. A voluntary reduction in income, such as refusing overtime when it is available, is not permitted and such a reduction will not be considered.

Foot Health & Aging By Neal M. Bullock, DPM, PA
O
lder people began to outnumber children for
the first time ever in the year 2000. Mobility is an important part of the independence that is cherished by the aging population and foot health is essential to mobility. Foot ailments often make it difficult for continued involvement in work and social activities. Foot problems can lead to knee, hip, and lower back pain which also undermine mobility. The good news for the aging person (which means all of us) is that foot problems can often be prevented. It is not normal for feet to hurt just because a person is aging. People should not resign themselves to foot problems simply because they are getting older. While some foot problems can be blamed on heredity, most ailments come from the cumulative effect of years of neglect or abuse. Many of these problems can be treated successfully by doctors of podiatric medicine. (DPMs). Foot doctors are often the first doctors to see signs of systemic conditions like diabetes, arthritis, and circulatory disease of the foot.

Normal wear and tear will cause changes in the foot. As we age, feet will spread and lose the fatty pads that cushion the bottom of the feet. Additional weight can also affect the bone structure. As we age, we should have our feet measured for changes in shoe size more frequently. We cannot assume that our shoe size will remain the same as in our younger years. Women have four times as many foot problems as men, and if you guessed that high heels are the usual culprit, you were right. Preventive foot care has many benefits; it can increase comfort, limit additional medical problems, and reduce the possibility of hospitalizations due to infection. Some healthy foot tips include: wearing the proper fitted shoes, (a shoe with a firm sole and soft upper is best), shop for shoes in the afternoon (as feet swell during the day), walking as good exercise for feet, never cut corns and calluses with a razor or knife, bathe your feet daily in warm (not hot) water using a mild soap with moisturizers, trim your nails straight across, inspect your feet every day, and have your feet examined by a podiatric physician at least twice a year. Podiatric physicians and surgeons are trained specifically in the diagnosis and treatment of all foot conditions. This training encompasses all the intricately related systems and structures of the foot and lower leg, including neurological, circulatory, skin and the musculoskeletal systems, which includes bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves. We do not have to resign ourselves to foot pain as we age. Consult with your doctor for happy, healthy feet! Dr. Neal M. Bullock’s office is located at 17013 Pines Boulevard, in Pembroke Pines. Loan Modification vs. Foreclosure – A Dangerous Waiting Game By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
M
ost homeowners that are in foreclosure, or even at risk of
foreclosure, attempt to solve their mortgage crisis through self-help. They will submit one loan modification application after another, numerous sets of the supporting documents, and updated financial information in hopes that their lender will respond with a positive result. This process, however, may take months or even years if you choose to do it on your own. Most lenders may not stop the foreclosure process or even a judicial sale of your home just because a loan modification application is under review. In fact, the longer the modification review process takes, the more likely you will be declined, and lose your home through foreclosure. Here are three keys to stop foreclosure proceedings so that you can obtain a loan modification before losing your home. The first key is to consult with professionals that are knowledgeable not only about the loan modification process, but also about the foreclosure process. The Arcia Law Firm has an experienced in-house loss mitigation department with full time loan negotiators, and over 17 years of experience defending foreclosure matters. We are familiar with the valid legal defenses to a foreclosure case in Florida, and also how to properly and legally cancel foreclosure sales.
The longer the modification review process takes, the more likely you will be declined and lose your home through foreclosure. Secondly, the best defense is usually a good offense. As explained in our previous articles, whenever it is appropriate, we will present a counterclaim against lenders within a foreclosure case. This counterclaim usually involves violations of Federal or State laws committed by the original lender that may be attributable to the current lender. Through a valid counterclaim, you may even be entitled to relief from errors committed by your current lender while servicing your loan, such as escrow errors, misapplied or unapplied funds, and overcharges. Placing lenders on the defensive usually slows down the foreclosure process, and provides much needed motivation for lenders to negotiate a loan modification under more reasonable terms. Thirdly, a bankruptcy filing under Chapter 13 not only stops the foreclosure proceedings, but actually provides homeowners with an opportunity for a “second look” at their loan modification application under the all new mediation program available only in South Florida bankruptcy courts. You will be entitled to participate in this program even if your loan modification application has been previously declined. The Arcia Law Firm has an established bankruptcy department with more than 12 years of experience that works alongside its loan negotiators to ensure that a viable loan modification plan is submitted with every bankruptcy petition. Under a Chapter 13 bankruptcy, you may also be able to eliminate second mortgages, homeowner’s association and IRS liens, pay off investment properties in five years or less at their current market value, and wipe out credit card and medical debt. In short, a foreclosure is a serious legal matter that can lead to the loss of your home, and a significant money judgment against you if not properly handled by legal professionals. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new consumer-friendly DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home,” available for purchase on our website. If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine you will receive a FREE copy during the appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free consultation, or visit www.arcialawfirm.com for more information.

Overrated Cosmetic Surgery Procedures By Charles A. Messa, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.
O
ne of the most common misconceptions in
cosmetic surgery is that if a procedure is “new,” it is successful (good). Many of these so-called “cutting edge” procedures often fail to live up to their promise. Some of them may even be harmful, especially if performed by untrained or poorlytrained physicians. To review a few of these procedures, I will begin with the “vampire” facelift. This procedure was introduced in 2009 and involves injection of a patient’s own blood plasma around the eyes, mouth and cheeks. This technique is not a facelift, and not FDA approved for use in the face. It is a technique used to promote healing after orthopedic surgery. There are no independent studies demonstrating its cosmetic benefits. Physicians who practice this technique believe the growth factors in plasma can gradually stimulate collage production. Another so-called “facelift” technique is the “stemcell facelift.” Approximately ten years ago, scientists realized that human fat cells contain immature cells, called “stem cells,” which can eventually develop into nerves, bone, or cartilage tissue. Fat cells transferred to different areas of the body improve contour and shape in many regions by volume enhancement. The stem cell effect on the surrounding tissue has not been proven scientifically, and there are no FDA approved devices to separate stem cells from fat, and no agreement on the number of cells needed for rejuvenation or the number of treatments necessary. Taking that into consideration, it is a marketing ploy for a physician to say they are performing stem cell facelifts by transferring fat to the cheeks and nasolabial folds of the face. Zerona fat-melting laser is another high-tech device that promises to reduce the waistline by inches. This device is successful when it is combined with diet, exercise and supplements that flush fluid from the body. No study has been performed to compare this laser treatment alone to therapy with diet and exercise without the laser. Benefits have been shown only in a Zerona-sponsored clinical trial. Finally, adding the word “laser” to enhance traditional liposuction may sound like it is better, but many evidence-based studies have failed to show any benefit from laser liposuction or Smart Lipo. The principle is that treating the subcutaneous tissue with a laser light breaks up fat cells. This laser generates high heat to melt the fat prior to removing it. The potential benefit is that the heat will allow more fat to be removed and stimulate collagen production below the skin and result in more skin tightening. However, this subcutaneous heat can result in burns, large scars, tissue hardening and prolonged pain. Cynosure, the company that makes Smart Lipo, acknowledges a very small number of uncomplicated burns from the procedure. Patients can have acceptable results with all of these procedures. However, the most important factor with any plastic surgery procedure, whether it is invasive or non-invasive, is the physician performing the procedure. Proper board certification by an ABMS, (American Board of Medical Specialties) such as the American Board of Plastic Surgery, and documented experience with a particular procedure is critical in achieving a safe and acceptable aesthetic result. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and consultant for Allergan Medical and has achieved Black Diamond Level as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. What You Need to Know About Deep Brain Stimulation There are more than 100 nervous system disorders that afflict millions of people across the globe. Many of the disorders affect a person’s movement and alter their motor controls. This includes balance, gait, speed of movement, tremors, jerks and abnormal postures. Deep brain stimulation or DBS has successfully treated these symptoms and allowed many sufferers to reclaim their lives.
If further treatment is needed, the neurologist and the neurosurgeon will work together to coordinate the DBS procedure. The team will monitor electrical impulses to correctly diagnose and supervise recordings that optimize their patient’s treatment.
Badih Adada, MD Cleveland Clinic Florida, Neurosurgeon
Q: Who should consider DBS? A: There are many complex factors that must be considered before committing to DBS. You should discuss your condition and symptoms with a neurologist who specializes in movement disorder. Patients who have tried medical treatments including medications, and have not attained satisfactory control of their disorder, should talk to a physician about their DBS options.
At Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Neuroscience Center, a collaborative approach is utilized. The team of neurologists and neurosurgeons has pioneered the use of DBS since the original clinical trials in the mid-1990s. Cleveland Clinic Florida continues to be at the forefront of innovative breakthroughs and successful treatments.
To schedule a consultation, please call 800.639.DOCTOR, or visit clevelandclinicflorida.org.
Q: What is deep brain stimulation (DBS)? A: DBS is the use of small electrical shocks sent to the brain. Electrodes are placed in specific areas of the brain; the location depends on each patient’s specific symptoms and treatments. The electrodes are connected by wires to a device, similar to the pacemaker and that are implanted under the skin, below the collarbone. The device will continuously send electrical pulses to the brain targets, stopping the impulses that cause tremors or other movement disorders. This treatment has also been successful in people with Parkinson’s disease, dystonia and Tourette syndrome.
Cleveland Clinic Florida
Q: What does the procedure entail? A: The Neuroscience Center at Cleveland Clinic Florida has a team of expert neurologists, neurosurgeons and medical support staff that collaboratively treat each individual case. The neurologist evaluates each patient and employs non-surgical treatments first.

Tax Consequences Due to Improperly Classified Workers
W
By Jacqueline F. Rodriguez, CPA
orker classification continues to be an
issue of controversy. Some employers who are looking to reduce costs prefer to classify a worker as an independent contractor to avoid paying benefits. However, the IRS and most states are very aggressive in the area of worker classification and the penalties for misclassifying a worker are severe. The IRS looks at three categories that encompass various factors to determine worker classification: Behavioral Control - Facts that show whether the business has a right to control how the worker performs the required task. Instructions could include: ▸▸ When and where to do the work; ▸▸ What tools or equipment to use; ▸▸ What workers to hire or to assist with the work; ▸▸ What sequence or order to follow or who should do specific tasks; ▸▸ Training provided by the business to the worker. Financial Control - Facts that show whether the business has the right to control the business aspects of the worker’s job, includes: ▸▸ The extent to which the worker has unreimbursed business expenses; ▸▸ The extent of the worker’s investment in the business; ▸▸ The extent to which the worker makes services available to other customers; ▸▸ The extent to which the worker can realize a profit or loss. Relationship of the Parties Involved - The substance of the relationship between the parties governs the worker’s status, includes: ▸▸ Are there written contracts describing the relationship between the employer and the worker? ▸▸ The permanency of the relationship between the worker and the employer. The expectation of an indefinitely ongoing relationship is generally considered to be evidence of an employer/employee relationship. ▸▸ The extent to which services performed by the worker are an integral part of the business of the employer. Section 530 Relief – Safe Harbor prevents the IRS from reclassifying a worker as an employee if the business has reasonable basis for and has consistently treated the worker as an independent contractor. However, in order to receive Section 530 Relief: ▸▸ The business must have reasonable basis for the classification. ▸▸ The business must consistently report all information and file all required 1099 forms. ▸▸ The current and any predecessor businesses must have consistently classified the workers as independent contractors. Tax Consequences: ▸▸ Employer is subject to a penalty of 1.5% of the individual’s wages (3% if no form 1099 was issued) for failure to withhold income tax (IRC Sec. 3509). ▸▸ Employer is subject to a “FICA penalty” of 20% of the employee’s share of FICA taxes (40% if no Form 1099 filed). ▸▸ Employer must pay its share of the FICA tax. ▸▸ Employer is subject to the full amount of the employee’s taxes if it intentionally disregards the withholding rules. This could happen where the employer treats all individuals as independent contractors. ▸▸ Court-related costs of litigating the matter and the possibility of negative outcomes, both in the form of fines and/or other criminal sanctions. To be protected against these tax consequences, you should review your current employees for potential worker misclassifications. Playing Sports with Shoulder Pain By Dr. Fernando “Tony” Moya
T
ennis in South Florida is one of the most enjoy-
able and practiced sports activities. Unfortunately many tennis players and other athletes develop shoulder pain from playing and overuse. This pain can be caused by a traumatic event or by wear. If the pain started after an event such as serving the ball when you developed sudden onset of pain and limitations in range of motion and strength, most likely you have injured your rotator cuff tendon. If, on the other hand, your pain started slow over a prolonged period of time you may have shoulder bursitis or tendonitis. Most of the shoulder injuries can start a basic treatment protocol. Rest for one to two weeks, immediate icing for 20 minutes three times a day, and anti-inflammatory medications for 14 days. Failure to get better with this basic treatment is an indication that you should visit an orthopaedic surgeon. If you noticed that raising your arm causes you to have pain in your shoulder you may have “IMPINGEMENT” or “ROTATOR CUFF” syndrome. This pain is directly a result of your bursae and rotator cuff getting pinched within your shoulder or a partial versus complete tear of your rotator cuff tendon, respectively.

Sports like tennis, golf, racquetball, and weight lifting can also cause you to have impingement of the rotator cuff. The symptoms are pain, pinching, stiffness in your shoulder. Overhead activities aggravate the pain and problem. In other people, you may feel a nagging pain even when you are not using your shoulder. The pain can be located in the anterior or lateral aspect of the shoulder joint, but in some cases it can be nonspecific in location. When you try to elevate your shoulder to the side of your head and it has no strength and drops back down, that usually is a sign that you have a tear in your rotator cuff tendon. The treatment usually allows you to return to tennis or other sports without limitations. Failure to get better will then require your doctor to offer you injections, order MRI scans and even surgery in cases that do not get better. Most patients do not require surgery, most patients get cured with rest, ice, medications and an exercise program to strengthen the muscles around the shoulder joint. Patients with complete rotator cuff tears usually require surgery to be able to return to tennis without pain. Dr. Moya is a Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in knee and shoulder surgery. He completed his doctoral fellowship at Harvard University, receiving his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (Robert Wood Johnson Medical School). Dr. Moya completed his orthopaedic residency at the University of Puerto Rico. He practices at the South Florida Institute of Sports Medicine located in Pembroke Pines at 17842 NW 2nd Street, (954) 430-9901 with additional office locations in Weston at 1600 Town Center Blvd., Suite C, (954) 3895900 and Tamarac at 7447 N. Pembroke Pines Update By Mayor Frank C. Ortis

esidents of Pembroke Pines who stay engaged
with things happening in our community benefit enormously from the vitality and improved quality of life by knowing when the newest store, restaurant or doctor’s office opens in the city; or when our arts and culture board hosts an opening reception for a new art exhibition; or when we celebrate accomplishments and recognition with proclamations made at the start of many of our commission meetings. Creating a thriving, business-friendly community in a great city such as ours takes a lot of work, not only by those of us in the municipality, but also by the residents, business owners and homeowners who engage with the city. It is done through public forums, meetings, social media, and by turning out at the many special events hosted by the city for the benefit of the public, such as our Kids Konnection event back on January 26, where we kicked off the event with a special vigil in honor of those who perished at the elementary school in Sandy Hook, CT. Hard work and community involvement will also be evident at our upcoming Pines Day Fair, from April 4-14, to celebrate the city’s 53rd Anniversary. This is a large part of what makes me proud to be the Mayor of Pembroke Pines.

I encourage residents to visit the Pembroke Pines website at www.ppines.com and become acquainted with the site. Learn to navigate through the home page and the various links. For example, there is a link on the left side of the home page “Live Commission Meetings.” Clicking on the link will allow you to see a live stream web cast of a city commission meeting, or click on additional links to see older archived videos of commission meetings. This is a useful tool, especially for those residents who do not have government access channel on their digital cable or satellite dish. The City of Pembroke Pines Landscape Advisory Board invites all residents to participate in the Natalie Belmonte Great Yards Award Contest. The award was created in memory of Natalie Belmonte, a well-known resident and businesswoman, who was also known for her love of nature, particularly butterflies. Ms. Belmonte passed away in July of 2011. Pines residents interested in applying for the Natalie Belmonte Great Yards Contest must have a Butterfly component in their yard, in addition to other components which are stated on the application. Applications are available at the City Clerk’s office in City Hall or by downloading the application at the City’s website www. ppines.com (The Natalie Belmonte Great Yards link is located on the left side, half way down the page). For further information, contact Gloria McCluskey, Chairperson of the Pembroke Pines Landscape Advisory Board, at 954-432-7370. As always, if you have any additional questions, concerns or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me at fortis@ppines.com or my office at 954-435-6505.

It’s Their Business
Summer Fun Starts With Camp Sagemont By Stacey Bomser
C
amp Sagemont has been delivering
spectacular summer experiences for longer than its campers have been alive. Now celebrating its 17th season, Camp Sagemont continues to evolve to provide new and exciting experiences for its campers. From tiny tots to teens, there is truly something for everyone this summer.
JoAnn Laskin, Executive Director for Camp Sagemont, has been actively involved with the camp since it first opened in 1997. She has seen and helped it grow from a traditional day camp to offering a selection of specialty camp programs from sports to science to the stage. Laskin shares her thoughts on what makes Camp Sagemont so special and what’s in store for campers this summer. Art campers “loved” the
campus pool run by The Swim Academy. All of our campers, whether in traditional day camp or one of our specialty camps, enjoy building lasting friendships and memories while trying new activities and developing new interests.
How and why do you always incorporate field trips into your camp programs? Camp
Sagemont campers are on the go! Some of the programs are based specifically around field trips and exploration and other camps have field
exhibit during a field trip to the Young At Art Museum.
Why did Camp Sagemont expand from a traditional day camp program to providing so many specialty camps? We
found that our campers have so many diverse interests that we wanted to create a variety of options for them to grow and expand into. There is something offered for everyone from preschool through 8th grade. In addition, our camp programs are geared towards active involvement while having fun!
What’s new and exciting this summer? This
summer, in addition to our traditional day camp and popular adventure camp, art camp, science camp, sports camp and travel camp, we will be offering zoo camp, voice/performance camp, marine camp and cheer camp. The campers in each camp will benefit from a hands-on approach through the exposure of field trips, presenters and performances.
How does Camp Sagemont come up with these original programs? We have many
brainstorming sessions, we listen to family survey comments and we look at popular trends.
What are some of the things children can look forward to this summer at Camp Sagemont? Each week has a specific theme
which we don’t announce until camp begins. We always introduce new special events to go along with our themes. The campers love our on

program is a great opportunity for high school students to earn community service hours and learn a host of valuable leadership skills. Many of the LIT’s want to apply to become camp counselors with Camp Sagemont when they are old enough.
Some students need academic support over the summer. What is offered in the Summer School program? We are very proud of our
academic Summer School program because these are hard to find in Broward County. We cater to students who want to get enrichment or remediation to help bridge the learning gap that can occur for students over the summer. Some students attend just summer school and others choose to participate in a summer school and day Camp Sagemont’s youngest camp combination. In campers always enjoy showing their team spirit addition, we offer during Color Wars. an English Learning camp for students who are just being introduced to the English language.
Do you offer a bus service? Due to expressed

trips once a week to locations that tie into the programs’ activities. Our campers visit places like the Morakami Museum, the Venetian Pools, Museum of Art in Fort Lauderdale, Biscayne Nature Center, airboat rides, water parks, and Marlins games.
What credentials do your lead counselors/ instructors have? The specialty camp instruc-
tors attend universities or are graduates and have majored in the field such as marine biology or zoology. Our cheer instructor currently coaches cheerleading for her school as well as the Sagemont School cheerleaders.
Camp Sagemont is for students through middle school. Do you offer a program for high school students? Our Leader In Training
interest from parents, we are offering a limited bus service this summer for the first time serving the areas of Miramar to Plantation. The service will be based on demand and parents can call the camp for details.
Anything else you would like readers to know about Camp Sagemont? Our campers have come to know and love their summers with us. We are always changing things up and adding new experiences. We are very excited about introducing more new programs geared to appeal to middle schoolers. We want the campers and their parents to know that our daily activities, adventures and travels provide a great opportunity for building friendships plus exploring South Florida’s attractions in an easy, safe and affordable environment.
Camp Sagemont begins the week of June 10th and runs through August 9th. Camp hours are 9am to 3:30pm, with early care and after care available. All programs are held on Sagemont’s Lower School Campus in Weston. To learn more about Camp Sagemont visit www.campsagemont.com or call (954) 384-1894.
