Pembroke Pines YMCA Offers HONEY Club By Debby Teich

A

s unemployment rates continue

to rise, it is becoming more difficult for teens and young adults to find jobs. In an effort to help, the Pembroke Pines YMCA recently started a Helping Our Nations Empowering Youth (HONEY) Club. The partnership between the YMCA and the HONEY Project provides social entrepreneurship training and real-time business experience for 15 to 24 year-olds. “This program gives teens some practical experience that they can put on their resumes,” said Becky Wright, senior program director for the Pembroke Pines YMCA. The HONEY Project is an award-winning educational and international economic development initiative that produces young social entrepreneurs working to alleviate global poverty. Since 2006, the HONEY Project has trained hundreds of high school and college students in social entrepreneurship, created a cooperative in rural Africa for subsistent farmers and women, developed an international exchange program and launched several youth owned business ventures in our local community. Participants complete a 12-week online training program which includes modules on social enterprise, leadership, corporate structures, creating a business plan, capital, launching a product, marketing & sales and finance. On Saturday mornings at the YMCA, the students meet with instructors and trained mentors who answer any questions and help them establish a business plan. The students also work together to support

each other throughout the process. Graduates of the program have opened film production companies, graphic design firms, urban farms and more. Students that complete the program will have the opportunity to participate in the 2012 Social Business Challenge. This is the third HONEY club to open in South Florida. “We hope to add more locations so that we can continue to provide a place for young people to have a voice,” said Nathan Burrell, founder and president. “The students in the program are likeminded individuals who want to make a difference in the world. They program helps inspire, equip and empower them to impact the world through social enterprise.” Several members of the Miramar Pembroke Pines Chamber have already volunteered to support the program. Organizers are hoping that other members of the community will also step forward and mentor students during the modules; sponsor a student to enter the club; mentor a graduate of the Academy through the Social Business Challenge; judge the Social Business Challenge; facilitate a new Honey Club brain trust and more. The Pembroke Pines YMCA is located at 501 SW 172nd Avenue. For more information on the YMCA program, call 954-727-9622, ext. 1434. For information on the HONEY project, call 954-323-6717, ext. 4 or visit www.honeyproject.org.

Parents and Children Get Their Hands Dirty in New Pottery Class By Debby Teich

A

The six-week course is for children ages 6 to 12 years old. Participants start by learning basic hand-building methods in clay, including the pinch, coil and slab methods. Once they master these skills, they are introduced to the potter’s wheel. Each of the projects is fired in the kiln and the students have an opportunity to glaze them. Most start with a bowl, which is one of the easiest projects to create. Others produce sculptures, functional and non-functional vases, picture frames, plates and more. By the end of the class, all of the students have created a form of Stoneware that can go in the oven, microwave or dishwasher. Once they learn the skills, they can repeat the class and try more challenging projects.

fter numerous requests

from parents, the Southwest Focal Point Community Center in Pembroke Pines is offering a parent and child pottery class taught by professional artist and art educator Leroy Daniels. The new class is designed to stimulate each child’s imagination and creative skills. It is an opportunity to create an artistic project with your child, get your hands dirty, and have some fun. Leroy holds a Masters Degree in Art Education from Penn State University. In the last 40 years, he has been an art teacher and art department head at several Dade County Public High Schools. Although Daniels teaches all areas of art, most consider him to be an expert in ceramic arts. He attends many of the local arts and crafts festivals to promote the arts and demonstrate his pottery skills. The kids at the shows love to try the pottery wheel and the parents often inquire about classes. “Parents are always looking for activities that they can do with their children,” said Helen Daniels, SWFPCC Recreation Supervisor. “The

pottery class is something fun that they can do together. It is also an opportunity for children to develop socially, cognitively, physically and emotionally with and through art. The students receive a raw ball of clay and some instruction and then they are free to create something that is uniquely theirs.”

26th Annual New Horizon Golf Classic to Benefit Children’s Home By Debby Teich

O

n May 19, 144 golfers will gather for

the 26th Annual New Horizon Golf Classic – and all for a good cause. The Golf Classic will benefit the Florida Methodist Children’s Home, a faith-based, welcoming and diverse Home that provides care to children, youth and families throughout Florida. Last year, the event raised over $44,000 for the Home and organizers are hoping to raise even more this year. The Classic will be held at Hollybrook Golf and Tennis Club, in Pembroke Pines. It features an 8 a.m. shotgun start and ends with an awards luncheon. There will be a silent auction, with items such as trips, hotels, sports memorabilia, jewelry, tickets to sporting events and more. There will also be several team awards, drawings and grand prizes. One lucky golfer will get to drive a sports car for a month for winning closest to pin. The cost is $150 for a single or $500 for a foursome, including greens fee, cart, drawing ticket, range balls, luncheon, shirt and/or gift bag, and other fun. Non-golfers are also welcome and can pay $35 to attend the luncheon and silent auction. This is the 9th year that the golf tournament will benefit the Florida Methodist Children’s Home, which helped over 1,500 children last year alone. What began as the Florida Methodist Orphanage in 1908, has become a safe haven

for children who are victims of sexual abuse, physical abuse, abandonment, or broken and dysfunctional families due to divorce, drug abuse, illness or death of a parent. The ministry includes residential care, emergency shelter care, therapeutic group care, a teen mother/baby program, a sexually reactive boys program, independent living, foster care and adoption services and community child care center. The 100-acre campus features 14 cottages, an educational center, a counseling center, chapel, gymnasium and much more. Earth Day is coming up and I want our community to not only recognize this environmental event, which is celebrated each year on April 22, but to think about issues of sustainability. Earth Day is designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the natural environment. As Earth Day approaches, I encourage you to learn more about sustainability and ways you can lead an eco-friendly lifestyle.

Start Recycling Reduce, reuse, recycle! One of the easiest first steps to take on the path toward a greener lifestyle is to start recycling. The environmental benefits of reducing our dependence on landfills and other methods of disposing of the trash we produce are tremendous. Regardless of whether you live in an apartment, townhouse or single-family home, recycling is simple, quick and easy to do. Every municipality has a system in place to collect household recycling. If you do not know about our recycling program or would like to start a recycling program, please visit Broward.org/GoGreen.

Drip, drip, drip! According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the average home wastes more than 10,000 gallons of water each year. With South Florida at risk for possible water shortages, it is important for Pembroke Pines residents to make a conscious effort to avoid unnecessary water wastefulness. Every drop counts, so be sure to turn off the water while brushing your teeth, run your washing machine and dishwasher only when they’re full, shorten your shower time, fix drips and find other easy ways to use less water. Not only does conserving water help the environment, but it also can help you save money on your electric and water bills. For more tips on conserving water, please visit the South Florida Water Management District’s website at SFWMD.gov.

Live For Tomorrow It’s only a day away! Share your sustainability tips with family, friends and neighbors so they can reduce their carbon footprint as well. Pembroke Pines is doing its part along with Broward League of Cities in leading the way toward a greener tomorrow by creating eco-friendly programs and policies that benefit our community. To learn more about sustainability efforts in your local community, visit the City of Pembroke Pines’ website at www.ppines.com. Join us in preserving resources for generations to come! As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to email me at fortis@ppines.com or call my office at 954-435-6505.

Annual Springtime Events are a Success By Debby Teich

E

ight-year-old Jessica Small waits

all year long for the Annual Egg Hunt EGGstravaganza to arrive. This year, she was one of over 5,000 children who searched for eggs. “It was the best year ever,” said Jessica. “I found so many eggs. I even found more than my older brother.” Children 12 and under were divided into different age groups before they searched for more than 52,000 plastic eggs hidden at two locations (26,000 at each). The first 500 children who arrived at the hunts received bunny ears. Some of the lucky children found special eggs that they traded for prizes. The free event included an egg hunt, bounce houses

and face painting. “The Pembroke Pines Annual Egg Hunt is a long standing tradition in our City,” said Francie Novo, City of Pembroke Pines Special Events Coordinator. “This is one of the most eggciting events we host. The children are so happy and want to be the first one on the egg field with their Easter baskets.” Children also had an opportunity to celebrate the arrival of spring with the Annual Pembroke Pines Sundaes with the Bunny, which was also a hopping success. “Bunny and a few of his friends were joined by hundreds of children and everyone had a wonderful time,” said Novo. After the kids made their own sundaes, they enjoyed arts and crafts, musical entertainment and other springtime fun.

Having A Baby? The Miami Maternity Center offers Natural Alternatives for Moms-to-Be By Julie Levin

T

orrey and Adam Roberts have their hands full these

days. In addition to caring for 3-year old son Reuben, they also welcomed baby Judah into their family earlier this year. Torrey delivered their newest bundle of joy, who came into the world at a healthy 10 pounds, 11 ounces, at the Miami Maternity Center. The 33-year old Pembroke Pines mother says she wanted a natural alternative to the standard hospital and OB/GYN birthing experience, and the Miami Maternity Center delivers just that. “It is a very comfortable setting in that you don’t feel pushed into making decisions. They talk you through everything and help you with whatever you need,” she said. Torrey is one of a growing number of moms-to-be turning to the Miami Maternity Center. Caring for mothers and families since 1995, the Miami Maternity Center provides top quality prenatal care, a soothing home-like setting for natural birth, and postpartum care for moms and their new baby. “Our slogan is ‘A Better Place to Have Your Baby,” said Carol Williams, midwife and owner of Miami Maternity Center. Torrey says that was exactly what she and Adam were looking for when they learned she was pregnant with Judah. They wanted a place that would respect their natural birth plan, much like the one they followed when Reuben was born in New Mexico. She wasn’t comfortable delivering her baby in a traditional medical facility. “I feel like the medical community here pushes things a little faster, and there is a higher cesarean rate than where we were,” said Torrey, who labored for 30 hours with Judah. What drew her to the Miami Maternity Center was the family-friendly atmosphere, the homey, comfortable feel, and the warmth of the staff. In their private, colorfully decorated room, they were able to watch movies to pass the time and have their every need met, according to their own birth plan.”I really felt like they respected and prioritized my comfort and the baby’s comfort,” she said, adding that even during postpartum visits, the staff would wait for her to finish breast feeding before continuing with the appointment. Williams says the staff of midwives, midwifery assistants and labor coaches at the Miami Maternity Center work off a simple philosophy; that everything they do is for the comfort, health, and well-being of their mommies and babies. It is a return to the traditional, non-invasive form of birth, where nature is allowed to take its course and the pregnancy and labor develops without intervention. If an indication arises that calls for intervention, only then do they intervene. Otherwise, it is all natural, with no pain medicines, epidurals or need to induce or speed up labor. “Women have been having babies for thousands of years. The body knows what to do,” said Williams. Among the many advantages they offer, moms come to the same place for their prenatal visits as they do for birth. When they come in labor, they’ll see the same staff that has been caring for them over many months, unlike many OB/GYN’s, who use a

rotating on-call schedule. The connection becomes so unique, that in many instances, the moms stay in touch for many years. “Our clients become like family members,” said Williams. Moms are given the choice of how they want labor and birth to happen. They are free to walk around during labor and find the position that provides them the most comfort. The same philosophy holds for the delivery. Instead of using drugs, the Miami Maternity Center encourages moms to use natural pain management and relaxation techniques like massage or hydrotherapy. The mom is free to listen to her own body and do what makes her most comfortable. Torrey agrees and says the Miami Maternity Center provided a reassuring and calming base of support all the way through. “The whole experience was wonderful. It is a time that can be uncomfortable but they do their best to make you feel comfortable and part of their family,” she said. The Miami Maternity Center works with most insurance companies and HMOs. They also accept Medicaid and offer a cash package price of $4,000 that is all inclusive. They offer water births, childbirth and early pregnancy classes, and classes for dads. The Miami Maternity Center is located at 140 NE 119 Street in Miami. To make an appointment, phone them at 1-305-754-2229 or visit them online at www.miamimaternitycenter.net.

They also met several former NFL players.” The games were a joint effort with the Miami Dolphins and Broward County Athletic Association (BCAA). Started in 1997 with six teams, the Jamboree has continued to grow. The Miami Dolphins hosted over 400 female athletes at the team’s indoor training facility in Davie. The day featured a clinic with former Dolphin players who reviewed the fundamentals of the game, as well as an opportunity to play in one of 13 games. “It was an amazing day.” said Twan Russell, Miami Dolphins Director of Youth and Community Programs. “It is exciting to see Nicole Martinez from Flanagan High School scans the how women’s football has evolved and changed. Local Teen Accepted to Boston Ballet’s Summer Program By Debby Teich

A

riana Anjelica Venero of Pembroke Pines has been dancing

and twirling for as long as she can remember. At only 12-years- old, she already seems to be on her way to achieving her dream of becoming a professional dancer. After spending last summer studying with the Miami City Ballet, Ariana was recently accepted to participate in the 2012 Boston Ballet School’s Summer Dance Program. “Ariana has a true passion for the art of dance” said her mother Arlene Venero-Rodriguez. “You can see the joy on her face when she is dancing.” Since 1963, Boston Ballet has been one of the leading dance companies in the world on stage, in the studio and in the community. The summer dance program is an intensive training program in classical ballet, with a comprehensive curriculum designed for aspiring pre-professional students. The students are taught by the Boston Ballet School’s international faculty. They spend five to six hours each day taking technique, pointe, variations and partnering classes, as well as modern and conditioning classes. This training is augmented by professional development lectures and the opportunity to showcase their growth and development with final performance workshops. Ariana was chosen from more than 2,400 students who auditioned during a 33-city audition tour that traveled throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Asia. “Being chosen to participate in the summer dance program is a dream come true,” said Ariana. “I have worked very hard for this. I hope to become a professional ballet dancer in the future and I am grateful to have been given this great opportunity.” Ariana took her first ballet class when she was 6-years-old. Her dance teacher noticed that she had an aptitude for ballet and suggested that she enroll in a more intensive program. Since 2008, she has been training at Academy of Arts in

Pembroke Pines, under the tutelage of Rebecca Russo-Columna, experienced dancer and certified teacher with Dance Masters of America: FL Chapter. She dedicates a minimum of 10 hours a week to dancing. “Ariana is a very hard worker,” said Rebecca. “If she continues to put forth the same effort, she will do very well.” Ariana Anjelica Venero

over $7,000. “Our students became very motivated to jump rope and raise pledges once I offer myself up,” said Sand. Last year, she told the students they could have a water balloon toss if they met the goal, but they fell short. She wanted to make sure they met the goal this year. “The sliming seemed especially exciting,” laughed Sand. The students have an opportunity to practice jumping rope throughout the year. Sand started a jump roping club to challenge the kids to try different jumps like the criss cross, double under and triple under. The students practice during P.E. and recess. Sand posts the names of students who master the skills on a list on her door. Some of the jump rope celebrities include a student who can complete 101 criss cross jumps in a row and another student who can do 33 double unders. “Jumping rope is excellent cardiovascular exercise,” said Sand. “It is an exercise students enjoy and will help them stay active and healthy for a lifetime.” Sand is already considering ideas for next year’s event.

Elementary School - West Campus had fun making sure that P.E. teacher Michelle Sand kept her “slimy” promise. She agreed to let her students pour green slime over her head if they raised a total of $6,000 for the American Heart Association through jumping rope pledges. The students exceeded the challenge and raised $6,387. Before the Jump Rope for Heart event, the students learned about their hearts and how to keep them healthy. They shared stories about how heart disease has affected their friends and families. Some of the students talked about their own personal battles with heart disease. “Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States,” said Sand. “The students were excited to raise money for this important cause.” Ninety students raised more than $30, earning the right to slime her. None of them hesitated when it came time to pour a cup of apple sauce mixed with green dye over her head. student Maxine Martinez had a great time Sand is known for her innovative ways to motivate Third-grade pouring slime on P.E. ith today’s advanced medical technology,

new treatment modalities are introduced every year. Omnilux Medical has developed a new generation of minimally-invasive light technology. This clinically proven system has achieved five FDA clearances, including mild to moderate acne, periorbital wrinkles, wound healing and muscular pain management. This device utilizes a light-emitting diode (LED) as a light source for non-ablative skin rejuvenation. Aging skin presents with unpleasant looking changes, such as wrinkles, dyspigmentation (brown spots), telangiectasias (spider veins), and a loss of elasticity. Most skin rejuvenation treatment modalities work through ablative mechanisms, where the superficial part of the skin, the epidermis, is removed and the underlying dermis is stimulated to produce new collagen. Non-ablative therapy aims to improve photo-aged skin without destroying the epidermis, therefore, there is less down-time and signs of external skin damage. The Omnilux System is based on narrow band light emitting diodes (LED’s). Each treatment with this device delivers pure, optimized, narrow band light through a matrix of LED’s carefully positioned to deliver optimum light doses to the treatment area. This type of phototherapy is a non-thermal and atraumatic treatment which stimulates cell activities and functions through a photobiomodulative effect. Photobiomodulation is the process where the delivered photons are absorbed by chromophores in the skin. These photons act on the cellular level along cellular membranes and mitochondria resulting in modulation of various cell functions. The changes that occur result in new collagen synthesis to exert the effects leading to skin rejuvenation. Controlled studies have been performed to demonstrate the clinical efficacy of LED phototherapy. We are now utilizing this skin rejuvenation treatment technique in our office. The advantages of Omnilux light therapy are that it is non-invasive, non-ablative, and safe for patients. Omnilux stimulates cells without generating or delivering heat to the skin surface. It acts athermally without causing damage to the epidermis or dermal tissue. Therefore, there is no downtime for patients or associated redness, blistering or peeling that often occur with ablative skin rejuvenation modalities. Large surface areas such as the face and chest can be treated. This system is also used in conjunction with Botox and injectable fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane to diminish post-procedure swelling and bruising and accelerate healing. My Aestheticians are currently using the Omnilux light system with a new peel from Neova—the Renaissance 2 peel. The combination of the two treatment modalities is highly effective in diminishing the visible signs of aging, i.e., hyperpigmentation, facial lines and wrinkles, and visibly softens superficial scarring and can help control acne. Controlled studies are being performed to determine the benefits of this LED Phototherapy in accelerating healing after surgery as well. This therapy promotes the body’s natural cellular processes to improve physical appearance and enhance skin rejuvenation techniques. To learn more about this new light treatment, and how it will benefit you, please call our office at 954-659-7760 to schedule an appointment with one of our two aestheticians.

Letting Go With Love By Alina Gastesi-de Armas, MA, MEd, LMHC

W

hen you are continuously making yourself

crazy expecting something from someone who has nothing to give or feeling frustrated because you are trying to make a person someone he or she is not, then it is time to look at your definition of love. Love is not supposed to be painful. Yes, there is pain involved in any relationship but if it is painful most of the time then something is not working. Unfortunately, you may be pretending that a person is someone he or she is not. You may be spending precious time trying to get someone to love you in a certain way, when that person cannot or will not?

It is time to let it go. It is time to let go of your insistence that they become the person you want them to be as well as let go of demanding that they give you something they are neither willing nor capable of giving. This does not necessarily mean that you have to immediately stop loving that person. It means that you love them for who they are. You release that person to be who he or she actually is. You stop trying to make that person be someone he or she is not. You deal with your feelings and walk away from the destructive cycle of broken promises, high demands, and endless frustrations. You learn to detach with love. Being detached and letting go with love does not mean that you cannot enjoy anything or enjoy being with anyone. Rather, it refers to that very strong clinging behavior to anything or anyone that causes you problems; that behavior insists on a reality that does not exist and creates havoc trying to achieve it. Detachment is the determination to be free. Just as Melody Beattie states in her book The Language of Letting Go: "We learn to let go of people we love, people we like, and those we don't particularly care for. We separate ourselves, and our process, from others and their process. We relinquish our tight hold and our need to control in our relationships. We take responsibility for ourselves; we allow others to do the same. We detach with the understanding that life is unfolding exactly as it needs to, for others and ourselves. The way life unfolds is good, even when it hurts. And ultimately, we can benefit from even the most difficult situations. We do this with the understanding that a Power greater than ourselves is in charge, and all is well." If you are struggling with your reactions to your loved ones and want to explore alternatives call Alina Gastesi-de Armas, Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Florida Supreme Court Mediator, and Parent Coordinator, at A Place for Growth in Weston at 954-384-9373 or visit www.APlaceforGrowth.com.

outh Florida is located in what’s considered

to be the flea capital. We also have our fair share of ticks. Both parasites can be detrimental to our pets’ health. In one day, a single flea can bite your pet 400 times, consume more than their body weight of your pet’s blood, and a female can lay hundreds of eggs on your pet. Fleas inject their saliva when they are feeding and many pets are actually allergic to the saliva. This causes them to become extremely itchy and they develop hair loss and skin infections. Fleas can also lead to anemia in severely infested pets and can transmit tapeworms. Ticks transmit at least a dozen diseases including Lyme disease, Ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and tularemia, all of which can be fatal and transmitted to humans. Severe tick infestations can lead to anemia as well. Fortunately, there are many effective products available to control flea and tick infestations. It is important to discuss the product you are using with your veterinarian, since many over the counter (OTC) products may be harmful to your pet. Many also contain synthetic pyrethrins, which many fleas are resistant to and are therefore not very effective. It is very important to read the package label carefully. Products labeled for use in dogs only should NEVER be used on cats. One ingredient called permethrin is lethal to cats. It is also important to pay attention to the age and weight the product is intended for. Using a product intended for an older or larger dog can cause dangerous side effects. If you suspect your pet is having a reaction to an OTC product, wash the product off (if applied topically) and seek veterinary care immediately. Many of us are opting for a more natural route to controlling fleas and ticks. Research shows, however, that many of the natural remedies do not work and some citric extracts can actually be toxic to cats. Diatomaceous earth, which can be used in the environment, has to be applied very carefully. If it is inhaled, silicone particles can end up in your lungs. Again, it is highly recommended that you discuss flea and tick control with your veterinarian. To clear up a flea and tick infestation, it is necessary to treat the environment. It is recommended that a licensed exterminator be used. Fleas and ticks are sensitive to sunlight and humidity so they tend to hide in shaded and protected habitats such as under shrubs, under bushes, and under porches. If you already have an infestation, make sure both the pet and the environment is treated. All pets in the household should be on a flea/tick control product and both the inside and outside of your home need to be treated. It can take a few months to clear up an infestation but doing so will keep you and your pet healthy. If you have any questions regarding flea and tick control, contact your veterinarian. They should be more than happy to discuss them with you. changes to our alimony laws in the state of Florida. There was a proposal that was in fact passed by the State House of Representatives which would have ended the possibility of permanent alimony in this state. Permanent Alimony could be awarded if the couple was in a long term marriage (17 years or more) and the other requirements of “need” and “ability” existed in the case. If Permanent Alimony was awarded, the receiving spouse would be entitled to a monthly payment until such time as the receiving spouse was to remarry or either party died. There were other changes proposed as well. After much lobbying and debate, this proposal did not get passed by the State Senate and therefore did not become law. This, however, does not mean that the issue is forever forgotten and I would not be surprised if this matter came before the state legislature again next term.

In the meantime, I thought it might be best to summarize the existing laws concerning alimony so there is no misunderstanding as to what was merely a proposal versus what is in fact existing law. Florida lists several factors in determining whether alimony is appropriate. Some of these factors are: ▸▸ The standard of living established during the marriage ▸▸ The duration of the marriage ▸▸ The financial resources of each party ▸▸ The age and health of each party If based upon the above (as well as some other factors contained within the law) alimony is warranted, the issue then becomes what form of alimony? There are several possibilities. Each of the choices primarily depends on the length of marriage. As stated earlier in the article, a long term marriage is defined as a marriage of 17 years or more. This results in a presumption of Permanent Alimony. Even with such a presumption, an award of permanent alimony is not automatic. Marriage of less than 7 years is considered a short term marriage. A short term marriage could result in “Bridge the Gap” alimony, which is awarded to assist a party by providing support to allow the party to make a transition from being married to being single. A marriage of greater than 7 years is considered a moderate term marriage and could result in an award of Durational Alimony. The purpose of Durational Alimony is to provide a party with economic assistance for a set period of time. The above are just guidelines and there are in fact other factors which must be considered. As previously stated, the length of marriage is just one facto the Courts consider. It is best to consult with an experienced family law attorney for a further explanation.

My Salute to Moms of Autistic Children by Brian D. Udell, MD

T

here are some great fathers out there, to be

sure. Dads, don’t get me wrong, I’ll give you guys your due in June. I’m not judging and I have no idea how I might have done with such a challenging journey as raising an autistic child. I am simply reporting my observation that, by far, the majority of amazing caretakers out there are the mothers. World-renowned researcher, Dr. Martha Herbert, has often begun her scientific presentations with a story about a friend whose adult child awoke from anesthesia and spent hours speaking normally with her mom. The daughter knew how difficult of a child she was and how much hard work her mother had done to get her to this point. After falling back to sleep and re-awakening, the daughter again exhibited her autistic personality. Dr. Herbert uses this example (plus more genuine scientific evidence) to teach that there seems to be some reversibility to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and we have yet to even look at the problem in the right manner (as a whole body disorder). Her message is for moms to keep trying, as will SHE, until there is an answer. I may not like or agree with “Dr.” Jenny McCarthy’s self-acquired scientific prowess, but she obviously hits a nerve that has passed throughout the autistic community. Her “mother warrior” credo has helped recover many children, I am certain of that. To her credit, her message has been that the general public cannot necessarily trust conventional medical thinking about the diagnosis, cause, treatment, and prognosis for this epidemic. Some protocols seem extreme, in my opinion, but you can’t blame mothers for seeking answers and help for children with autism. So, in many of my articles, I write about planning, medication, special diets, supplements, and therapies. For the moms out there, that’s preaching to the choir. I’m only enumerating such chores as I detail the work that every ASD patient requires. I have learned most of my art – about toilet training, time management, addressing behaviors, diet, special classes, educational planning, sensory conditioning and much, more – from the insightful and relentless mothers who are determined to help their child recover. Thank you. Thank you all for letting me examine and help care for your children. It has been one of the best experiences that I have ever had in my professional life. The only piece of advice that I’ll offer is this: take some time out for yourself and your spouse. I said “some”, because I know that it is sometimes impossible. But, it needs to be more than “none”. The number of intact families in this practice is even lower than the national average. I had a mom call me about which supplements we might hold off while Grandma and Grandpa assume childcare duty. She told me that she and her husband have been going away every year for many years on one special vacation and how much good that it did for the family as a whole. I had another parent express her wry disappointment when she found out that a well-known, educational ‘Autism Retreat’ didn’t include a spa for the parents. Not a joke, really. Mothers are special. Mother’s Day is certainly a deserved holiday. Dr. Udell is a Board Certified Neonatologist and Pediatrician who is the Medical Director of The Child Development Center of America in Weston, FL. His practice helps children with special needs. His blog can be read at www.theautismdoctor.com.

Insurance Insight

Your Home’s Value and Property Insurance By Matthew J. Chrupcala, CPCU, CRM, AAI, CWCC

W

hile it may seem like a viable option to lower

your property insurance coverage to save some money, this may end up costing you much more money in the long run. If your policy limits are too low, the cost to fix your home may exceed your limits, even if your home’s market value has decreased.

Property Insurance Considerations Though housing prices are declining, home repair costs are escalating. According to the Los Angeles Times, it may cost as much as 30 percent more to rebuild parts of a home as compared to completely building a new one from scratch. Rebuilding is often more expensive because demolition and removal of damaged property are expensive.

Workers must also work around your existing landscape, power lines and other structures. This can make rebuilding difficult and limiting. Limits on your Homeowners Insurance are established to protect your family in the event of an accidental loss (fire, destruction to your property due to weather, etc.). In an effort to remain protected and save money, consider the following savings tips: ▸▸ Avoid filing nuisance claims. Use your coverage to protect against losses that you cannot recover by yourself and take care of minor incidents on your own. ▸▸ Consider having your home appraised by a certified and licensed appraiser for its reconstruction or replacement cost value. In some cases the reconstruction value or replacement cost value established by the appraiser will be less than the value assigned to you by the insurance company. The appraisal will give you peace of mind that your largest asset is properly insured and you could save premium dollars. ▸▸ Notify your insurance company and insurance agent when you renovate your home. The additional investment you made in your home needs to be taken into consideration to ensure the proper insurance value. ▸▸ Consider upgrading your home to include wind and rain protective devises and material to mitigate the effect of wind and rain damage. The mitigation upgrade will not only provide you better protection against the effects of Mother Nature but could result in significant premium discounts. ▸▸ Increase your deductible to lower your monthly premium. According to the Insurance Information Institute (III), if you increase to a $1,000 deductible, you could save as much as 25 percent or 30 percent if you increase up to a $2,500 deductible. ▸▸ Consider buying multiple lines of coverage from the same carrier to incur discounts, such as your Homeowners Insurance, Automobile Insurance, Life Insurance, etc.
