Happy Mother’s Day!
T
he month of May has arrived.
FCATs are over and the end of the school year is in sight. The sun is hotter and the pool is getting warmer. Summer vacations and camps are on the horizon. This is also the month to recognize mothers for the sacrifices and dedication they show us every day. From the time we are born our mothers are there to care for us, pamper us and console us when needed. Endless hours are spent nursing boo-boo’s, helping with homework, driving to and from school and activities, cleaning up after us, and worrying about our future. Now it is time to pamper them. Give mom some flowers. Treat her to a nice meal. Purchase a special gift. Most of all, don’t forget to offer a heartfelt “Thank You.” A hug and a kiss go a long way too. This month, our team of editors, account representatives, graphic designers, photographers and support staff is celebrating the 10th Anniversary of our sister publication, Our City Weston. We are proud that our five local community news magazines reach 100,000 homes and businesses throughout Southwest Broward every month. Our award-winning editorials, which allow us to spotlight inspiring individuals and community organizations, continue to inform, educate and enrich the lives of our readers in Weston, Davie/Cooper City/ Southwest Ranches, Pembroke Pines, Miramar and Plantation. Sincerely,
Sven Budzisch Publisher/Owner

Local Girl Scouts Earn Silver Awards By Debby Teich
P
embroke Pines residents Stephanie Phillips and K atelyn B esu
joined the Girls Scouts seven years ago as Daisies in kindergarten. Last month, the girls received the elite Girl Scout Silver Award—the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn. They have proven that they are leaders, who are organized, determined, and dedicated to improving their community. In order to earn the Silver Award, the girls had to identify a project in the community, create a plan, and implement it. They joined forces with Kerstin Martinez of Southwest Ranches and Karina Czubkowski of Miramar for the project. All of the girls are members of Troop 10306 and attend seventh grade at Saint Mark Catholic School. For the past several years, the troop has been volunteering at His House Children’s Home, a private, non-profit, faith-based organization dedicated to helping children from newborn to 18 years of age, and those who have transitioned out of the foster care system. The troop has organized Easter egg hunts, food drives during Christmas and Thanksgiving, toy drives, Christmas caroling, and more. When they started discussing ideas for a Silver Award project, they immediately knew where they wanted to focus their efforts. They had developed special friendships with many of the children at His House and wanted to continue to find ways to help them. They agreed to redo the playroom, which was disorganized and filled with broken and old toys. They wanted to make it an appealing place for the kids to have fun. “Helping others is right thing to do,” said Stephanie. “It makes me happy knowing that others are happy. I have become close with many of the kids at His House and I am willing to help them with anything they need.” After researching designs and coming up with a plan, they went out into the community to raise funds for the project. They held a bake sale and sold hot dogs at a basketball tournament. They received donations from City Furniture, Home

Depot, and Best Buy, as well as family and friends. They worked hard to clean, paint, and organize the room. They filled it with a new television, furniture, educational toys, movies and much more. When it was ready, they held a dinner and movie night for the children. “It was a wonderful feeling to see how happy the kids were when they saw the new room,” said Katelyn. “It was a lot of hard work, but it was worth it.” The girls received their Silver Awards at the Annual GSSEF Recognition Ceremony last month. They are already talking about ideas for the Gold Award.

Pembroke Pines Residents Invited to Enroll in Historic Cancer Study By Debby Teich
F
or 15 years , Pembroke Pines residents
have supported the American Cancer Society’s efforts to find a cure for cancer through Relay for Life. Now they have another opportunity to help prevent people from hearing those dreaded words, “You have cancer.” On May 7, at Pembroke Pines City Hall, they are invited to enroll in ACS’s Cancer Prevention Study-3, which has the potential to change the face of cancer for future generations. The CPS-3 Study will help researchers better understand the genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors that cause or prevent cancer. Unlike most prior studies, CPS-3 focuses on people who have not been diagnosed with cancer. Researchers are hoping that CPS-3 will help identify new and emerging cancer risks. “Many individuals diagnosed with cancer struggle to answer the question, ‘What caused my cancer?’” said Alpa V. Patel, Ph.D., principal investigator of CPS-3. “In many cases, we don’t know the answer. CPS-3 will help us better understand what factors cause cancer. Once we know that, we can be better equipped to prevent cancer.” The study is open to anyone between the ages of 30 and 65 years old who has never been diagnosed with cancer (not including basal or squamous cell skin cancer). They must be willing to complete periodic follow-up surveys. To enroll, individuals will be asked to sign an informed consent form; complete a comprehensive survey packet that asks for information on lifestyle, behavioral, and other factors related to their health; have
their waist circumference measured; and give a small blood sample. The process takes approximately an hour to complete. Pembroke Pines is one of 16 enrollment sites in South Florida. Researchers will use the data from CPS-3 to build on evidence from a series of American Cancer Society studies that began in the 1950s that collectively have involved millions of volunteer participants. Prior studies have played a major role in understanding cancer prevention and risk, and have contributed significantly to the scientific basis and development of public health guidelines and recommendations. They have also confirmed the link between cigarette smoking and lung cancer, demonstrated the link between larger waist size and increased death rates from cancer and other causes, and showed the considerable impact of air pollution on heart and lung conditions. “Taking an hour or so every few years to fill out a survey – and potentially save someone from being diagnosed with cancer in the future - is a commitment that thousands of volunteer participants have already made,” said Dr. Patel. “We’re looking for more like-minded individuals in Pembroke Pines to join this effort that we know will save lives and improve the outlook for future generations.” Enrollment will be held on May 7, from 7am - 11am and 2pm - 6pm, at Pembroke Pines City Hall. For information or additional locations, visit www.cancer.org/cps3florida or call 1-800-227-2345.

Foundation
ver the last few years many TAG USA families have been generous to donate food items, toys and money to support the efforts of the TAG USA Foundation. The charity was founded by Marissa Zoldan, a two-time cancer survivor herself, to battle the effects of cancer and support families that become afflicted with poverty or homelessness. Under Marissa’s guidance the TAG USA Foundation is organizing fundraisers and collecting donations not only to find a cure against cancer, but also to financially and emotionally support the families of cancer victims, which all to often are forced into a financial crisis due to the horrendous medical expenses associated with cancer treatment. Many families lose their income, their savings or their homes due to the costs of surgeries, treatments and medications. TAG USA Gymnastics recently hosted a Trampoline & Tumbling competition with 150 competing athletes from around Florida. TAG USA Gymnastics owners, Marissa and Michael Zoldan, took a portion of the entry fees and donated $1,500 to the Foundation. By partnering with Kids in Distress the charity holds annual toy drives and food donations to help under-privileged kids struck by poverty and homelessness. The current food drive will be able to accept donations until the end of May. Please check the www.TagGymnastics.com website for upcoming donation opportunities. participated in the Annual City of Pembroke Pines Annual Egg Hunt EGGstravaganzas. The free Egg Hunts for children ages 12 and under were held simultaneously at two locations, Pines Recreation Center and Pembroke Shores Park. Each location had a bounce house and face painting. The first 500 children who showed up received bunny ears. “The children enjoyed lots of EGG-citment as they hunted the egg-fields peppered with 52,000 stuffed eggs,” said Francie Novo, Special Events Coordinator for the City of Pembroke Pines. The children and the Bunny also had fun at the Annual Pembroke Pines Sundaes with the Bunny event held at the Pembroke Pines Southwest Focal Point Community Center. Over 150 guests were dressed in their favorite springtime colors. The children made their own sundaes and enjoyed games, as well as arts and crafts. Rob Guerra from Superstar Productions got everyone on the dance floor, including the dads who had fun preforming the Bunny Hop. For information, call 954-435-6525 or visit www.ppines.com.

Chapel Trail Students Stop, Drop, and Chalk By Debby Teich
S
tudents at Chapel Trail E lementary recently
took a break from their normal routine to “Stop, Drop, and Chalk,” as they celebrated the first day of spring. They expressed their creativity with colorful chalk, using the school’s sidewalks as a canvas. The students drew everything from hop-scotch to the blue and green earth. Some of the classes were given themes to use as inspiration. Miss Monnin’s kindergarten class had a “spring” theme and Mrs. Sanchez’s first grade class did a “Walk of Fame” hand print theme. “We celebrated the first day of spring Chapel Trail style and the school looked beautiful,” said Jen Diaz, PTA FUNdraising Chair and 5th Grade Committee Co-Chair. “At dismissal and even the following day, you could see the students, parents and even a few grandparents admiring all of our students’ wonderful art work.” The PTA also used the event as a FUNdraiser to help pay for the fifth grade graduation activities, which will occur at the end of the school year. For only $2, students could purchase a special edition Spirit Stick to add to their collection. The students loved the idea and the decorated fabric patches sold out quickly, raising nearly $1,000. This is the first year that the PTA has sold the Spirit Sticks and they have been a huge success. Students attach the fabric patches to special key chains that the PTA distributed at the beginning of the school year and then hang them on their backpacks for everyone to see. Students have received Spirit Sticks for some of their achievements, including Honor Roll and Accelerated Reader. Every Wednesday, the PTA sells more
than 40 different themed Spirit Sticks, such as holidays, girl and boy bands, college colors, and more. “They kids are always looking for a new themed spirit stick to collect and trade,” said Jen. “Faculty, staff and parents also love them.”

uring my initial consultation with a prospec-
tive client, I try and educate them as to the basic laws in Florida dealing with a Dissolution of Marriage. After explaining some of the basics, I always inquire as to whether they have any questions. It seems that there are a number of questions which are common to most cases. I thought I would share them with you;
How long does a divorce take?
I explain that every divorce is different, so it is impossible to predict how long any individual case will take. There are number of factors which are out of my control as well. For instance, the particular Judge who is assigned the case may have a great influence on how long the proceedings will last. Each Judge controls his/her own docket and as such some divisions are more “backed up” than others. In some divisions it may take a couple of weeks to schedule a hearing, while in other divisions it may take a couple of months. I have handled simple uncontested dissolutions in about 6 weeks, while more complex cases can last a year or more.

Obviously, the greater amount of issues involved, the longer it will take. Cases that settle by way of a Marital Settlement Agreement will normally conclude quicker than a contested matter, which must be presented to a Judge. If the participants reach an Agreement, then a Final Hearing can be held within about a two week period.

As previously stated, each case is different. Since most Family Law attorneys charge on an hourly basis, the time spent will obviously affect the “bottom line.” It is in most cases impossible to predict how long a case will last and therefore impossible to advise as to the eventual cost. One must remember that in litigation, the time spent is also somewhat controlled by your opposition. When an attorney files his/her “Notice of Appearance,” it requires his/her involvement in all aspects of the case. The more the parties chose to litigate, the more costly their case will be. It is really up to the client as to how much the “bottom line” will be.
I don’t want anything from my spouse. Can I agree to that? The answer is yes and no. A person can waive all of his/her rights if he/she wishes to do so. The only aspect of the case which cannot be waived is child support for any minor children. Florida law will not allow a Final Judgment to be signed without a provision for child support. The rationale is that the support belongs to the children and therefore cannot be waived by the parents. I have found that many individuals are initially prepared to “just walk away” from a long term marriage without obtaining his/her share of property accumulated. It is obviously his/her right to do so, but nobody should ever make a decision based upon emotion. The reason a person should retain an attorney is to insure that decisions that are made are logical and based upon the law. No individual should give up rights that the law provides.
If you have any questions, I suggest you contact an experienced family law attorney for the answers. Call my office for a free consultation at 954-385-9160.

D
iabetics can develop many foot problems . Some relatively simple problems can get worse very quickly and lead to serious complications. People with diabetes experience foot problems when blood flow is poor or when they have nerve damage in their legs and feet. It is important for diabetics to visit their podiatrist regularly for foot examinations, and for checks in circulation and nerve function. Your podiatric physician should also give you a list of things to do to maintain proper foot care in between visits. Diabetes can cause the skin on the foot to become dry. The skin can peel and crack. The culprit is that the nerves that control sweating are not working anymore. The diabetic with dry feet must take care to dry his feet after bathing, but then seal in some moisture with a thin coating of petroleum jelly, creams, or other lubricant. However, oils or creams should not be put between the toes, because it may lead to infection. Diabetics should also stay away from soaking the feet, because they may not be able to feel when the water is hot due to neuropathy.

Neuropathy is nerve damage which can lessen your ability to feel pain, heat, or cold. Loss of sensation in the foot commonly leads to foot injury. A diabetic may have a pebble in his shoe and not realize it. He may be walking around with the pebble and not notice an injury until he sees an ulceration or infection. Neuropathy can also lead to deformities of the feet. Calluses occur more commonly on the feet of diabetics. If calluses are not trimmed, they can get thick, break down, and turn into ulcers or open sores. You should never cut calluses yourself. This can lead to infection. A podiatrist should cut calluses. Also, stay away from chemicals claiming to remove calluses and corns--they may burn your skin. Poor circulation is yet another problem which can afflict the diabetic. It makes the foot less able to fight infection and to heal. Diabetes causes blood vessels of the foot and leg to narrow and harden. One of the worst things you can do if you have poor circulation is smoke. Smoking will make arteries harden faster. If your feet get cold, wear socks. It is important to stay away from hot water and heating pads. Exercise is good for poor circulation because it will stimulate blood flow-just be sure to wear comfortable, sturdy shoes. People with diabetes are also more likely to need amputation. Many have artery disease reducing blood flow to the feet as well as neuropathy. These problems combined make forming ulcers and infections common which can lead to amputation. For all these reasons, it is important to see your podiatrist and take good care of your feet. There are many things you can do to protect your feet and keep them healthy: wash feet daily; dry them carefully especially between toes; check your feet every day and use a mirror; feel the temperature of your feet (if feel hot or cold, something could be wrong); don’t put feet in hot water; don’t cut off blood flow to feet; don›t smoke; don’t use chemicals on corns or calluses or warts; cut your toenails to follow the curve of your toe; wear flat shoes that fit your feet; check your shoes before putting them on for pebbles, stones or other sharp objects; and finally see your podiatrist for regular examinations and more tips for happy, healthy feet. Dr. Neal M. Bullock’s office is located at 17013 Pines Boulevard, in Pembroke Pines. For information, call 954 450-4200.

New Loan Modification Program Launched in South Florida By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
C
ommunication failure between lender and borrower is the
principal reason why more loan modifications are not successful. After much anticipation, on April 1, 2013, the all new Loss Mitigation Mediation (“LMM”) Program was launched in all South Florida Bankruptcy Courts to combat communication failures. This new program is in direct response to the frustration experienced by many homeowners who have tried to modify their home loans time and time again without success. A similar program was recently launched in Central Florida bankruptcy courts, resulting in an 85% modification success rate. If you are in foreclosure, or behind on your mortgage payments, and have tried to modify your mortgage to no avail, here are the reasons why you should now consider participating in the LMM program.
First, under the LMM program, the foreclosure process stops immediately and any foreclosure sale date is automatically cancelled the moment you file your petition. Unlike a traditional loan modification, the LMM program is completely court supervised. This means that a United States federal judge will ensure that your lender “plays by the rules,” that all loan modification negotiations are concluded, and a definitive response to your application is provided within short, established timeframe. In addition, under the LMM program, you will participate in mediation, which is a formal negotiation meeting with a representative from the bank that has full authority to modify your loan, and settle your case. Another unique feature of the LMM program is that it completely eliminates the “lost document” scenario. Anyone that has attempted to modify their home loan has certainly felt the frustration every time their lender claims they never received certain documents, even though they were already sent by the homeowner. Under the LMM program, all required financial documents for a loan modification are uploaded to a single digital portal so that all parties concerned timely receive and have access to the documents in a confidential setting. If the lender refuses to provide a timely response to a complete loan modification application, after having received all the necessary documents electronically, the homeowner now has the right to enforce a prompt reply from their lender through the court. Under this new scenario, a United States federal court judge has the authority to impose serious monetary and other sanctions on a lender that fails to timely comply with the LMM program guidelines. In short, the new LMM program is an excellent new alternative for homeowners that provides justice, and evens the playing field in the otherwise unpredictable world of home loan modifications. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new consumer-friendly DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home,” available for purchase on our website. If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a FREE copy during the appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free consultation, or visit www. arcialawfirm.com for more information.

Four Dimensional Facial Rejuvenation By Charles A. Messa, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.
SUMMER
ART
CAMP
A
s a person ages , there is a loss of collagen
and elastin in the skin; alteration in the skeletal framework; and a progressive loss, or atrophy, of facial fat. These alterations in skin, fat, and bone result in distinctive changes in facial appearance. Increased skin laxity, prominence of the nasolabial folds and jowls, increased depth and number of facial wrinkles, characterize the aging face. A youthful face is fuller, more angular, with high cheekbones, a distinctive jawline, and smooth skin. In order to achieve the optimal result in facial rejuvenation, it is necessary to address all the underlying elements that affect the appearance of the face. There are four areas to treat – skin surface, laxity or excess skin, soft tissue support structure, and biochemical composition within the skin. The first is the skin surface – fine lines, wrinkles, pore size, and skin texture. This area is rejuvenated through typical skin treatments such as fractional laser therapy, chemical peels and microdermabrasion, Botox and Dysport, as well as typical creams, such as Retin A, glycolic based products, and moisturizers, such as Kinerase. These products help diminish fine facial wrinkles and improve pigmentation.

The second area to address is skin looseness or laxity, as well as skin excess. When redundant skin creates deep folds and jowls, the excess skin should be removed. There are multiple face-lifting techniques. The typical procedure should be adapted to the individual patient’s anatomy through a minifacelift or full facelift, or modification of these procedures,w such as an “S” lift or lifestyle lift. Thirdly, the soft tissue procedure that supports the skin may need to be enhanced. Fat grafting adds volume that is lost as a result of atrophy of facial fat and descent of supporting soft tissue. During the early stages of facial aging, soft tissue fillers, such as Juvederm, Restylane, and Radiesse can accomplish this as well. Finally, an area that most surgeons and patients neglect is the skin, the organ. The biochemical makeup of the skin is affected by what we eat and put into our bodies. Omega 3 fatty acids and antioxidants aid in restoring a healthy appearance to the skin. Consuming foods high in essential fatty acids, vitamins A, C, D, and E and antioxidants, such as Goji and Acai berries make the skin appear more youthful. You can also improve the skins appearance by avoiding sun exposure and not smoking. To summarize, as we age, the alterations that take place resulting in an aging appearance are multifactional. Because of this, treatment options must also address all these components – the skin surface, skin excess, structural support, and the skin composition. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Reviewing Your Homeowners’ Insurance Policy Limits Makes Sound Sense By Matthew J. Chrupcala, CPCU, CRM, AAI, CWCC

Homeowner’s Insurance policy limits are enough to cover the cost of rebuilding your home, should the unexpected happen? The cost of rebuilding your house may be higher than the price you paid for it or the price you could sell it for today. The following tips will help you protect your investment and ensure you have the coverage you need – eliminating worry and additional hassles.
Review Your Policy Limits
Make sure that your home has sufficient coverage on an annual basis by contacting your insurance company. In addition to reviewing your policy limits annually, let them know if you’ve remodeled, made an addition or purchased an expensive item for your home, such as new 3D television. Also, let your insurance company know if you have made a major lifestyle change – for example, gotten married or taken in an elderly parent who owns expensive heirlooms. With these lifestyle changes may come new things that need to be accounted for in case of a loss.

Purchase Additional Protection
A typical Homeowners’ policy protects against fire, lightning, wind storm and many additional perils (check your policy for specifics). However, most Homeowners’ policies do not protect against damage caused by floods or earthquakes.

Read your policy to determine what exactly it covers. Most cover replacement costs, or payment for the cost to repair or replace damaged property using similar materials. A Homeowners’ policy also covers your home’s contents, but coverage will vary based on your policy. You will want to purchase additional insurance to cover jewelry, collections, artwork and memorabilia.
When making a major change to your home, it is important to talk to us about insuring those changes. Be sure to let us know the specifics to ensure you have adequate coverage. If you remodeled a bathroom, we want to know whether you installed a standard bathtub or a whirlpool tub or if your countertops are now made of marble – it all adds to the value of your home.
Understand Rebuilding Costs
As a general rule, an average inland home costs about $150 per square foot to rebuild. Properties that are on water, on steep hills or are considered luxury homes are more costly to replace and could potentially cost upwards of $250 per square foot to rebuild.
Take Construction Costs into Account
Construction costs are on the rise, so your policy should reflect that. When reviewing your policy, consider the rising cost of materials, labor and supplies, and set your limits accordingly.

Adult Flat Foot Deformity By Robert H. Sheinberg, DPM
A
dult flat foot deformity, also known as
Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction, is a common ailment. It is the result of progressive lowering of the arch secondary to weakness or tearing of the tendons and ligaments that support it. Here is a closer look at the causes, signs and symptoms, and treatment options.
Causes:
▸▸ Inflammation of a tendon on the inside of the ankle and foot from overuse (uphill running) or wearing excessive flat or worn shoes. ▸▸ Rupture or tearing of the major tendon (posterior tibial) supporting the arch. ▸▸ Weakening or tearing of the ligaments supporting the arch and foot joints. ▸▸ Connective tissue disease (i.e. rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and Reiter’s syndrome). ▸▸ Trauma to the foot or ankle (i.e. bad sprain turning the foot down and out). ▸▸ Flatfoot deformity that progresses over time. ▸▸ Associated with diabetes, hypertension and obesity.
Signs and Symptoms:
▸▸ Pain in the arch and inner ankle when walking. ▸▸ Difficulty standing in one place without developing pain in the ankle and foot. ▸▸ Unable to run or participate in sports. ▸▸ Swelling inside the ankle and foot. ▸▸ Weakness of the muscles and ligaments supporting the arch. ▸▸ Lowering or flattening of the arch causing a flatfoot deformity. ▸▸ Foot starts to deform and bulge on the inner ankle and foot. ▸▸ Foot points outwardly (when standing, the affected foot points away from the body to the outside). ▸▸ Associated with tight Achilles tendon which further deforms the foot. ▸▸ May cause knee and chronic lower back pain.
Treatment: ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸ ▸▸
Identify the primary cause of the problem. Identify the extent of ligament and/or tendon injury. Supporting the foot and ankle with braces. Immobilization in a cast or boot to allow healing (with or without crutches). Orthotic (custom insole) to support the arch and prevent further damage. Physical therapy to strengthen the muscles that support the arch and lessen the inflammation in the tendon and joints. ▸▸ Anti-inflammatories to decrease the swelling and inflammation in the ankle and foot. ▸▸ Surgery to reconstruct the arch and prevent further damage if the condition has been unresponsive to conservative care.

Hormone Replacement Therapy Helps Older Dogs Walk Again
M
y name is David Scott Bieber, DVM, P.A. I am a Veterinarian at Sheridan West Animal Clinic in Cooper City, Florida. I have an interesting story with a happy ending. My family and I had a Chocolate Labrador named Bruno, born 06/28/1997. Back in the end of 2008, Bruno was about 11 years old and started to have a hard time using his hind legs. He started having trouble getting up and trouble walking. We started anti-inflammatory therapy, pain management and adequan injections. By the end of December, Bruno was paralyzed in both hind legs. We took digital radiographs, and sent them to a Radiologist, which was concluded that he had chronic intervertebral disk disease in both cervical (neck) and lumbar (back) spines. This probably caused disk herniation with spinal cord compression at one or more sites. The prognosis was poor. To make a long story short, my family & I decided to put Bruno in a wheelchair on walks. Bruno was still very happy wagging his tail and eating. But nonetheless it was heart breaking watching him pull himself everywhere in the house. Bruno at this point was still on anti-inflammatories, glucosamine and adequan injections. Then, I began to think how will Bruno walk again if he has muscle weakness, muscle atrophy, and lack of bone density in his back legs and spine. I came up with the idea to give Bruno Testosterone injections once monthly, the idea being that testosterone maintains muscle mass and increases bone density. And, if you think about it, most dogs are neutered and have zero levels of testosterone to begin with. We were not giving body building doses, just enough to maintain muscle mass, so if his spinal cord damage ever healed he would be able to walk again. Five months went by in that wheelchair, and then Bruno started to walk again. Bruno died at 14 years old of chronic kidney disease which is their natural way of going. He walked until the end. I have been doing research since 2008 in the use of testosterone injections in the geriatric canine with incredible results. We are using it mainly on large breed dogs that are neutered, that are having a hard time getting up. These illnesses include arthritis, vertebral disk degeneration, hip dysplasia, muscle atrophy and degenerative joint disease. I have been using this treatment for the last 4 years, and it’s been and continue to be very successful with great results. 25% of all canines could benefit from this treatment! These injections are not expensive to give, either.

Pembroke Pines Update By Mayor Frank C. Ortis
I
want to bring your attention to one of the
city’s valuable programs run by our city’s fine Police Department: Crime Watch. Crime Watch is a crime prevention program instituted in Pembroke Pines to attempt to reduce crime in our city by citizen and merchant involvement. The goal of Crime Watch is to prevent and deter crime in Pembroke Pines. We want our growing population to enjoy a safe and secure community. We hope to establish an efficient Crime Watch program throughout the city that will offer many rewards for everyone. These include instilling a greater sense of security and well-being, reducing the fear of crime, and creating a closer and friendlier community. Crime Watch also works to bring law enforcement and our community together as a team to reduce crime in all areas. It is impractical to place a policeman in each neighborhood and business location. The practical solution is to utilize those who live and work in our city. Residents in their neighborhoods and merchants around their businesses know who belongs there and who doesn’t. They know what activities in their areas look suspicious. They know what to report to our police. Remember Crime Watch is not a vigilante group working outside the normal procedures of law enforcement. We do not encourage members to take personal risks to prevent a crime. Our weapon is the telephone!
Become your community’s eyes and ears!
We cannot guarantee that your neighborhood or business area will become 100% crime free, but crime can be reduced with your help. The Crime Watch program works, because everyone is working with, instead of relying on, the Pembroke Pines Police Department to combat crimes in our community. You literally become the “eyes and ears” of the police by reporting suspicious activity immediately to them. They know that they cannot be everywhere at the same time. The police realize that they need their community to assist them in their efforts to protect and serve. Crime Watch has opened new channels of communication between the police and the residents and merchants of our city.
Does Crime Watch really work?
Crime Watch will work only if we, the citizens and merchants, make it work. There are three things that we need to make our goal a reality; they are the interest, support, and active participation of our community in the Crime Watch program. One of the crucial functions of law enforcement involves keeping the people informed as to what is happening in our community so that they may feel more secure. At the same time we, the people, have to band together and work with the police to deter crime.
Will the police work with Crime Watch?
Yes! The Pembroke Pines Police Department fully supports the Crime Watch program in our city. In fact at almost every meeting that Crime Watch hosts, the police department sends a police officer from the Community Affairs Unit. Often a detective from the unit that specializes in burglary, auto theft, street crime, etc. will attend and address the specific concerns of the neighborhood or business. Our city is growing too fast, which prohibits our police from being everywhere at once. Our police recognize the role that the community can play in law enforcement and keeping our city safe. They need our help as much as we need theirs.
How do you join Crime Watch?
Become a block captain or coordinator in your neighborhood or business area. Crime Watch needs you...and your community needs an active Crime Watch program. To schedule a meeting in your neighborhood or at your business, call 954-435-6528, visit www.ppines.com/police/crimewatch or send an email to CrimeWatch@bellsouth.net. As always, if you have any additional questions or concerns, send an email to fortis@ppines.com or call 954-435-6505.
