Don’t Forget Father’s Day!

I

t is hard to believe that J une

is already here! The school year flew by and now it’s time to enjoy summer vacation. That means no more homework, no getting up early to rush to class, and no running around to afterschool activities. Summer is the time to relax and enjoy unscheduled time together with family and friends. While mothers worldwide had their recognition last month, fathers, who also play an integral role in bringing up a child, are often a bit forgotten. This month, as we celebrate Father’s Day, it is time to show our fathers how much we appreciate all their hard work, their dedication and their sacrifices over the years. More than likely it was your dad who taught you to play catch, ride a two-wheeler, maybe even drive a car. Today’s dads are active dads, who are building close-knit relationships with their sons and daughters. Now is the time to show your gratitude. Don’t forget to say “Thank you, Dad” from your heart. Sincerely,

Sven Budzisch Publisher/Owner

A representative from the City’s new sanitation provider, Waste Pro, will discuss such topics as rates, collection schedules, recycling programs, and changes from the previous contract. Members of the Crime Suppression Team, Burglary Suppression Team, and Community Affairs Unit will be available to answer any questions. “We want the public to meet some of the people on our team that protect them and their property,” said Major Larry Diaco. “Pembroke Pines is one of the best communities to live in and we are doing everything we can to keep it safe.” Diaco says that the

Crime Suppression Team works closely with residents and businesses to prevent burglaries, while the Crime Suppression Team deals with a variety of other crimes, such as smash and grab, purse snatching, carjacking and more. Attendees will also learn about a new online web application that was introduced in January. The City of Pembroke Pines has partnered with SeeClickFix.com to provide citizens and businesses with a method of reporting non-emergency issues within the city that need to be fixed or require attention. With just a click from a smart mobile device, they can submit community concerns regarding pot holes, broken sidewalks, graffiti, and other items directly to City and County staff. “The See Click Fix is an amazing suite that streamlines the process to voice a concern,” said Michael Lockett, Director of Technology Services Department. “It empowers our residents to get information to the right person quickly and have their concerns tracked and addressed in a public forum.” For information, call 954-435-6505, visit www.ppines.com or send an email to mgraham@ppines.com

Why TAG USA Gymnastics is different... When you take a tour of TAG USA, you will immediately see what makes this gym so different and special. Michael Zoldan summed it up as he said “We brought new ideas to recreational gymnastics for this area by using lesson plans, fingerprinting all staff, awarding children with medals, having a clean gym, and guaranteeing that your child progresses. Although other gyms try to copy what we do....they can’t duplicate the TAG USA way!” Classes: Facility: • TAG USA uses 3 floor managers to monitor class structure and safety. • Upscale comfortable couches and front row seats allow parents to watch all the action. • Children learn with certified coaches that use structured lesson plans. • Full time staff assures clean and fresh smelling gym. • All athletes are awarded a medal and certificate of accomplishment. • Largest gym allows more repetitions with no crowds, no sharing, no waiting. • Largest gymnastics facility in the region with best prices. Team: Visit and compare. • All team levels train under USAG guidelines, not AAU. • 12 compulsory and optional girls coaches train with separate team equipment. • 3 Boys team coaches with separate boys area and complete training equipment • 2 trampoline & tumbling coaches use full rod floor, euro tramp, and double mini • State, Regional, and National qualifiers in girls & boys gymnastics and T&T teams

Has Naidu Orthodontics and the American Pediatric Dental Group hosted a tournament before, or was this a first? This was our

Why basketball? It’s what Dr. Naidu and the

dozens of hoop fanatics took to the court recently for a charity event designed to make sure that children in our community have beautiful smiles. Hosting the event, Board Certified Orthodontist Dr. Kistama Naidu and Board Certified Pediatric Dentist Dr. William Peña, both huge basketball fans, who believe that all children should have access to dental care, regardless of their financial state.

Their practices, American Pediatric Dental Group and Naidu Orthodontics, leading providers of state-of-the-art comprehensive pediatric dental care from the earliest check-ups through orthodontic care, hosted the Charity Basketball Tournament together with the Montessori Academy of Pembroke Pines. Their goal was not only to raise money, but also to get the word out about the importance of good dental health. Both South Floridians from a humble upbringing, Dr. Naidu and Dr. Peña are passionate about giving back to their community. They recently answered some frequently asked questions about their practice, and the tournament.

Please tell us about the basketball tournament! Our Basketball Charity Tournament

was held at the Montessori Academy in the Pembroke Pines gymnasium April 28. It included participation from grade levels one through eight, as well as an adult league consisting of faculty, friends and family. Registration fee was $5 for children and $10 for adults, with all proceeds benefitting the dental care of kids in their South Florida community. Montessori Academy contributed their gymnasium along with food, Gatorade and water. Naidu Orthodontics and American Pediatric Dental Group matched all contributions collected. The tourna-

care. Knowing that many people are struggling economically, we put a priority on making sure there is care for everyone. The kids even get to have a little fun in our offices. West Pines is done up in Miami Heat colors, thanks to Dr. Naidu’s longtime basketball passion. The office in the East Pines relays their mutual passion for travel: each room is like a different “porthole” into a new city, just like on a cruise ship. When they look up, there are televisions over every chair and a great warm, homey feel in the office. Both offices have aromatherapy to help calm patients. Dr. Naidu came to this country in 1985 from British Guyana. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Miami, then furthered his studies at Barry University obtaining his Masters in Biological Sciences. He received his dental education and specialty in Orthodontics at the prestigious Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston.

Why is it important for our kids? It is a fun activity to raise awareness and donations for the greater good of our community. This event builds camaraderie and team work within all teams involved in the basketball tournament.

Naidu Orthodontics and the American Pediatric Dental Group have a strong presence in the community. Why is that a priority? We think it is important

to give back to the community that supports us and to increase awareness of the importance of dental health. In addition, we want to serve as role models to the kids in the community. We both make it a priority to get out in the community, meet people and make a difference. Each year, we provide agendas and homework folders to local students, attend community and charitable events, career days and fundraisers. We have both done overseas dental missions and locally provide dental care for children in foster care. Members of Temple Dor Dorim Volunteer at Children’s Harbor By Debby Teich

C

hildren ’ s Harbor

in Pembroke Pines is always in need of volunteers. The welfare organization provides therapeutic services to children and families in crisis, a safe and nurturing environment for children in foster care, and advocacy within the child welfare system. Fourteen members of Temple Dor Dorim in Weston recently visited the facility to lend a helping hand and make a difference in the lives of the children who live there. The volunteers brought paint, paint brushes, and other supplies and got right to work. In just a few hours, they painted two bedrooms. “With so much wear and tear, the rooms really needed a fresh coat of paint and some TLC,” said Jennifer Stewart, Director of Development. “We are so grateful when groups come out to help. It shows the kids that people really care about them.” The group’s effort was part of a Temple wide “Mitzvah Day,” with more than 200 members doing “good deeds” in the community. They cooked and served lunch for families staying at The Ronald McDonald House, made Para Cord bracelets for military personnel through Operation Gratitude, sold dog treats to benefit the Humane Society, raised money for Muscular Dystrophy, donated socks and made bag lunches for Life Net 4 Families, and much more. “It is important to help out so that our children are exposed to the less fortu-

nate and can give back to the community,” said Elise Bolski, who volunteered at Children’s Harbor. Volunteers are always welcome to take a tour of Children’s Harbor’s serene campus, which can easily be mistaken for a typical neighborhood community. There is a sports field, sports court, shade pavilion, and playground. There are also four sibling group homes and one teen maternity residence, which can serve up to 34-foster children at a time. The community plays a critical role in helping Children’s Harbor provide loving homes and supportive services to foster children and at-risk families. As back-toschool approaches, Children’s Harbor is in the process of collecting donations, including gift cards to purchase clothing and other necessary items. Children’s Harbor is located at 19425 SW 58th Manor, in Pembroke Pines. For information, visit www. childrensharbor.org or call 954-252-3072.

here is a saying often used in family law,

which is that “if you have children, you are never divorced.” I repeat that saying several times each week to both existing and new clients. Even after a divorce is finalized, there are still potential problems which may arise. If you have the opportunity to read a Final Judgment of Dissolution of Marriage, the Court will retain jurisdiction in the matter. That is to ensure that if issues arise, the parties have the legal right to petition the court for relief. There are some issues, however, which cannot be re-litigated. A large percentage of my practice is devoted to “post judgment matters,” such as child support, alimony, custody, visitation and parental relocation. All of the above matters can be addressed by the court if there is a failure to comply with an existing court order or of due to a “substantial change in circumstance” one of the parties is seeking a modification. For instance, if the primary residential parent is not receiving his/her child support, then an enforcement action can be brought. If one of the parents loses his/her job through no fault of their own, then a modification to reduce either child support or alimony can be filed. If one of the parents is not allowing scheduled visitation or if due to a change in circumstance the visitation schedule must be changed, then a modification proceeding can be filed.

Of course, not every issue can be re-litigated. The equitable distribution of assets and debts is a matter which cannot be disturbed after the Final Judgment, unless the parties themselves reach an agreement or one of the parties can prove fraud or coercion in the original agreement. In addition, child support cannot be increased unless the party seeking an increase can show a substantial change in income, which would result in an increase of at least $50 per month or 15% over the existing monthly payment. Of course, one can never attempt to overturn an agreement simply because he/she has changed their minds and now feels it is perhaps unfair. I always try and tie up all lose ends when finalizing an agreement between the parties. The last thing either party wants is continued litigation, which means continued stress and continued attorney’s fees. Sometimes a matter can be resolved by the parties simply discussing the matter. I am always amazed at how often issues can be resolved by a simple phone call, letter or e-mail. If both parties truly want what is best for their child, then a compromise should not be so difficult. Unfortunately, some parties wish to continue the litigation based upon emotional issues. This is never a good idea and, more often than not, it is the children who suffer. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. For information or a free consultation, call 954-385-9160.

Two Common Foot Questions By Neal M. Bullock, DPM, PA

W

hy Do M y Feet H urt I n the M orning? What is

Plantar Fasciiitis? These are two questions I hear almost every day. The plantar fascia is a ligament-like band which runs from your heel to the ball of your foot. This band pulls on the heel bone which raises the arch of your foot as it pushes off the ground. If your foot moves incorrectly, the plantar fascia may become strained. The fascia can swell and its small fibers may start to fray--causing plantar fasciitis. The most common cause of plantar fasciitis is poor foot mechanics. If your foot flattens too much, the fascia can overstretch and swell. If your foot does not flatten enough, the fascia may hurt from being pulled too tightly. People who suffer from plantar fasciitis often complain that the bottom of their feet hurt when they stand and they experience this most often in the morning. Pain is usually felt on the inside of the foot, close to where the heel and arch meet. Pain can diminish after walking, but it can return after rest or prolonged activity.

Heel spurs and bursitis are related problems which may develop in response to plantar fasciitis. A heel spur is an extra piece of bone which may grow near where the plantar fascia attaches to the heel. The heel spur can form in response to the plantar fascia’s tug on the heel bone. Bursitis is a swelling of the bursa, or fluid filled sac, that reduces the friction between a ligament and a bone. Bursitis can occur if a swollen plantar fascia presses against a plantar bursa. How can you get relief from this pain? Your podiatric physician has the answer. If poor foot mechanics is the cause of your plantar fasciitis, custom made shoe inserts, also known as orthoses or orthotics, may provide relief. In addition, strategically placing tape on the foot can support the arch and control movement temporarily. If taping helps, orthotics may be prescribed. Orthotics are built from plaster casts of the feet and can control the way the foot moves. Other ways to reduce symptoms of plantar fasciitis include the use of aspirin, ibuprofen, and other medications as directed by your podiatrist. Severe pain may require prescription medication, injections, physical therapy, and stretching. As a last resort, surgery may be considered if other types of treatment don›t help you. The first step to feeling better is to consult your podiatric physician. Dr. Neal M. Bullock’s office is located at 17013 Pines Boulevard, in Pembroke Pines. For information, call 954 450-4200.

Attention Homeowners – South Florida Foreclosure “Rocket Docket” in Full Swing By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

F

lorida has some of the highest foreclosure numbers in the

U.S., and Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties have the largest backlog of foreclosure cases in the State. In response to this backlog, all three counties have now instituted their own system to expedite review and resolution of foreclosure cases, which many have referred to as a “rocket docket.” If you are at risk of foreclosure or in foreclosure proceedings, you must read this article closely or you may lose your home. Consistent with its nickname, the new “rocket docket” system reduces the time it takes for a foreclosure case to be brought to trial. Some foreclosure cases are being set for trial by the court within 6 months of the court filing date, sometimes over the objection of the parties. From 40 to more than 100 cases are currently being scheduled for trial before the same judge, during the same trial calendar in just one day. A trial in some cases is concluded within just a few minutes without any meaningful opportunity for the homeowner to present defenses to the foreclosure case. In fact, many cases are being set for trial before the homeowner is permitted to conduct an investigation into the validity of the mortgage documents and proper transfer of foreclosure rights.

As part of the “rocket docket” initiative, retired judges have also been hired on a temporary basis solely to preside over these massive foreclosure trial calendars. While these retired judges are all very competent, they cannot possibly be as familiar with the facts or the law of the case as the actual division judge assigned to each foreclosure case. Attempts to postpone trial dates are routinely denied as part of the “rocket docket” initiative, even if all the attorneys agree that trial should be postponed. In short, Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties have adopted a “trial at all costs” policy that is not only detrimental to the homeowner who stands to lose their home without sufficient due process, but also to the bank’s attorneys who may not have all the necessary documents to proceed with trial. If there was ever a time for South Florida homeowners to hire an experienced and competent law firm to defend a foreclosure, the time is right now in view of the “rocket docket” system. There are fewer defenses being seriously considered by judges during foreclosure trials, and only limited grounds upon which a trial date will be postponed. More importantly, homeowners need to have a clear and defined plan of action in order to save their homes. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new consumer-friendly DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home,” available for purchase on our website. If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a FREE copy during the appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free consultation, or visit www. arcialawfirm.com for more information.

s the summer sun heats up in South Florida ,

it’s important to protect your skin as much as possible. A sunburn can be extremely painful, but is far from the greatest risk of sun exposure. The harmful UVA and UVB rays from sun exposure accelerate the aging process in the skin, resulting in hyperpigmentation, increased wrinkles, and, most importantly, increased incidence of skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common cancer, with more cases diagnosed each year in the United States than all other cancers combined. There are some misconceptions regarding sun exposure and skin cancer. ▸▸ You can’t get a sunburn on a cloudy day. Clouds only block some of the harmful ultraviolet rays, so a sunburn is still possible. ▸▸ You can’t get skin cancer where the sun doesn’t shine. Skin cancer can appear anywhere on the body, including the hands and feet. ▸▸ Skin cancer only affects light-skinned people. Those who are fair are at increased risk, but anyone can get skin cancer. ▸▸ Using a tanning bed occasionally is safe. The United States Department of Health and Human Services and World Health Organization have classified a tanning bed as a carcinogen and research suggests that even one session may increase the risk of developing skin cancer. Some sun exposure is essential to Vitamin D metabolism; however, excessive exposure or unprotected exposure can be very harmful. Sunscreen is the obvious first step in protecting your skin. Broad spectrum is best. The FDA requires sunscreen manufacturers to prove that sunscreens protect against ultraviolet B (UVB) rays, which are the primary cause of sunburn as well as ultraviolet A (UVA) rays, which can cause premature aging of the skin. Both types of rays have been associated with the development of skin cancer. Choose SPF, or sun protective factor, of 15 or greater. This number system is a measure of how effective a sunscreen is at blocking UVB rays and reveals how much longer you can remain in the sun safely with sunscreen on, as compared to being in the sun with no sunscreen. Application is also important. Your sunscreen must be applied in adequate amounts to achieve the SPF rating on the label. Most individuals don’t apply enough sunscreen. The recommended amount is 2 mg./cm², which translates to using 1 fluid ounce for an average adult – roughly 1 shot glass or 2 tablespoons worth of sunscreen for face and body. Patients who are concerned about obtaining enough sun exposure to make Vitamin D should be aware that current research indicates that 15 minutes of unprotected sun exposure to the mid-day sun, 3 times a week, is sufficient to synthesize enough Vitamin D to meet our body’s needs. You should apply sunscreen to dry skin at least 15 minutes, ideally 30 minutes, prior to sun exposure and every two hours thereafter – more often, if you are in water or sweating. If a sunscreen claims to be water-resistant, the label must specify whether it will remain effective for 40 or 80 minutes when exposed to water. Photo-protective clothing, which blocks ultraviolet rays, is more widely available. Additionally, remember to protect lips, wear sunglasses with UV protection and wear a wide-brimmed hat. Finally, it is important to get your skin checked periodically by a board certified physician. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and consultant for Allergan Medical and has achieved the Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. he summer is here! The first half of 2013 has

simply just flown by! Historically, this is one of the most dynamic periods for real estate sales, as most homebuyers and sellers typically use the summer months for relocation purposes. The major challenge that Realtors face to date is not being able to acquire properties for the abundance of buyers in the market due to the complete lack of housing inventory. No way, you say? Just ask a friend or an associate that is in the market to buy a home and you will get a complete discourse on the current state of the housing market first hand. The new norm is multiple offers that lead to bidding wars on homes that are priced realistically. Buyers under this circumstance usually pay more for the property than it is really worth, which in more cases than not, can cause challenges with property appraisals. The list of challenges just goes on.

What is the main cause for this predicament we are faced with? A huge majority of buyers are investors looking to rent out the homes, leading to low inventory and higher prices. Listings are very tight because of the vast amount of demand. Where are these buyers coming from? There are two major groups. Foreign nationals are the first group, accounting for a large percentage of our present buyer pool. As downtrodden as one may think our economy is at present, the economy of most other foreign countries are even more distressed. Unstable political conditions in many foreign countries also make investing in the US and in South Florida, in particular, a far more secure option for foreigners. Wall Street is another major investor in the South Florida’s housing climate. Hedge fund managers are targeting South Florida as being one of the most attractive places to invest for the long term. Both groups hold the edge in purchasing power as most of the transactions to date have been cash transactions. The question that seems to arise is, “Will this ever end?” Are we headed for another “bubble”? In my opinion, if you follow history and trends, we still have a few years left before this present cycle will end. Why? Unlike the events leading up to the housing crash of 2005, caused in part by a breakdown in our lending system, this cycle is fueled by a tremendous amount of cash transactions. South Florida’s climate continues to attract new residents to our state daily! With very limited space to left to build in our major metropolitan areas, housing will be in demand for quite some time! Should I Play in Pain? By Dr. Tony Moya

T

he ability to exercise and compete effectively

and at the highest performance possible will depend on how healthy your body is, how strong your muscles are and how well trained you are. So avoid injuries by strengthening and stretching your muscles before you exercise. What are the parameters used by doctors and professional athletes to decide whether it is safe to play or not? How do you determine whether you are able to play or not? If you decide to exercise and play with pain you must monitor the intensity of the pain during the game. If your pain allows you to run, jump or exercise without limitations and if the pain does not increase in intensity, the injury is considered in most cases stable. Most athletes can continue to exercise with caution.

Your Children Will Love To Brush Their Teeth!

Avoid injuries by strengthening and stretching your muscles before you exercise.

If your pain is something that came slowly with the aging process then it is most likely arthritic in nature and you should change the types of exercises you do. Avoid loading, high impact exercises and do none-loading, low impact exercises such as cycling or swimming. If the pain showed up suddenly it is usually something that will not allow you to exercise. If you are playing and the pain increases in intensity you should stop playing. If the pain is gone by the time you wake up the next day then it is okay to exercise and compete on that day. This indicates that the amount of tissue injury is not and has not exceeded tissue healing. If the pain is present the next morning after you exercise you should then consult your physician to take X-rays and even a MRI Scan to find out in detail what is causing your pain. If your X-ray and MRI Scan are negative then ice, rest and anti-inflammatory medications are enough to let you return to sports. In other more serious injuries such as fractures, rotator cuff tears, meniscus tear and ACL tears, the decision to return to sports activities can be complicated. In those cases surgery may be required and the return to play may be between two to six months after surgery. This is a decision your physician will have to make with you. In conclusion, strengthening and stretching your muscles and joints will keep you playing without pain. Dr. Moya is a Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in knee and shoulder surgery. He completed his doctoral fellowship at Harvard University, receiving his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (Robert Wood Johnson Medical School). Dr. Moya completed his orthopaedic residency at the University of Puerto Rico. He practices at the South Florida Institute of Sports Medicine located in Weston at 1600 Town Center Blvd., Suite C, (954) 389-5900, and in Pembroke Pines at 17842 NW 2nd Street, (954) 430-9901.

To help calm your nerves & put those fears to rest, here’s the stripped down version. From preparation & pain to what kind of results to expect, everything you’ve wanted to know about bikini waxing and…things you were too shy to ask.

Benefits of Bikini Waxing:

▸▸ -removes hair follicle from the root ▸▸ -slows down hair growth process ▸▸ -minimizes ingrown hairs ▸▸ -exfoliates & brightens skin ▸▸ -long lasting smooth & silky effects

What pre-appointment prep should I take?

You need to stop shaving, plucking or otherwise messing with your bikini area a few weeks before your appointment. If your bikini hair is longer than half inch, it is recommended that you trim the hair to about 1/4-1/2 inch in length to make the experience less painful. Exfoliate the day before your waxing appointment, this helps to strip your hair of dead skin cells.

Fancy French bikini, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, or Beautiful Brazilian-how is a girl to choose?

It’s totally up to you to decide. A basic Fancy French wax removes any hair from the edges that would peek out of a standard bikini bottom. A Girls Just Wanna Have Fun wax brings those edges in even further and takes a little bit off the top. A Beautiful Brazilian wax is the “barest” of them all, removing everything underneath, behind and most (if not all) off the front.

Is it going to hurt? Let’s not sugarcoat things!

To minimize the “ouch” factor & make the experience as painless-as-possible Dr. Edna’s BareEASE numbing underwear have proven to be safe, effective, & easy to use. Apply 30-45 minutes before to achieve maximum effect.

So you finally found courage to go for waxing. Now what to expect?

There’s a first time for everything. The wax is heated to allow it to be spread easily and evenly over the skin in the direction of hair growth, hard wax is applied to the waxing area with a wooden stick. The hair becomes embedded in the wax, which cools and firms up holding the hair. Next, the wax is then quickly pulled off in the opposite direction of the hair growth, pulling the hairs out of the follicles. Typically, the process is over pretty quickly – within 15 to 20 minutes.

Is waxing sanitary? Don’t lower your standards!

Waxing hygiene is serious. Make sure you go to a place with proper sterilization procedure. To prevent cross contamination of the wax the specialist should not double-dip during waxing session.

Is Bikini Waxing really worth it?

After that brief moment of discomfort, it is a long stretch of smooth hairless skin. Waxing is a very personal procedure, you should take time in choosing which salon is best for you. Pembroke Pines Update By Mayor Frank C. Ortis

recent story on National P ublic R adio’ s

Morning Edition reminded me of the perils facing many people in the community who fall victim to scammers willing to go to any length to steal people’s identities. Many are aware of scamming done through retail outlets and financial institutions using customers’ personal information. Now, members of the public, especially senior citizens, are falling prey to scammers through healthcare insurance, specifically Medicare. The NPR report says that seniors are often targeted because they are more likely to be home to answer the phone. In addition, they have retirement savings that scammers hope to tap into (NPR 04/22/13). One potential scam victim profiled in the story received a phone call from someone she did not recognize, but sounding very formal. The caller said they were sending out new Medicare cards and wanted to make sure this senior citizen’s information was up to date. The caller confirmed the senior’s name address and phone number in an attempt to put the senior at ease to make her feel like he already knew her. But then the caller began to read off a number and asked the senior if it was her bank routing number. The senior smelled a rat when the caller asked her to give him her bank routing number, so that he could confirm that the number was correct. Luckily, the senior decided to end the call immediately. She hung up on the scammer without jeopardizing the privacy of her financial information. Because of recent legislation related to the Affordable Healthcare Act (or Obamacare, as it has come to be known), confusion about the new law has created opportunities for unscrupulous scammers and identity thieves to work harder to defraud Medicare recipients and others out of their savings. Over the years my office has received a number of calls from seniors whose personal accounts have been compromised through the vile enterprise of scammers and identity thieves. This increasing new criminal enterprise will hurt many in the community if safeguards are not followed. The following are tips taken from http://www.medicare.gov/navigation/helpand-support/fraud-and-abuse/fraud-and-abuse-overview.aspx. Tips for protecting yourself from Medicare Fraud include: ▸▸ Never give out your personal information to any unsolicited phone call or home visit from someone claiming to sell Medicare-related products ▸▸ Make sure any doctor, provider, or community/state organization you do give your information to is Medicare approved. ▸▸ You can identify Medicare providers by calling 1-800-MEDICARE (6334227); (TTY users can call 1-866-653-4261) 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Visit www.MyMedicare.gov. ▸▸ Always review your Medicare claims to check for suspicious activity and to ensure they match up to the dates of doctor visits, tests or other Medicarerelated purchases (i.e., prescription drugs) ▸▸ If you lose or have your Medicare card stolen, contact the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213 immediately. With so many people going through financial hard times, the last thing anyone would want to hear is that they have been scammed, and their financial circumstances compromised further. If you are a victim of other types of fraud within the Pembroke Pines jurisdiction, call the Pembroke Pines Police Department’s non emergency number 954-885-6085 to ask questions or file a report. As always, if you have any questions, comments or concerns, you can contact me at fortis@ppines.com or call my office at 954-435-6505.

it’s their business

Park Avenue Gymnastics Promotes Fun and Fundamentals By Stacey Bomser

F

or nearly thirty

years, young gymnasts have been learning to cartwheel and somersault at Park Avenue Gymnastics. It is the oldest gym in South Florida still owned and operated by its original owner, Stu Greenberg. Stu and his wife Pam now work alongside their two daughters, Amy Petersen and Katie Cohen, at their two gyms. The Cooper City complex opened 17 years ago and, in response to customer demand, the family opened a second gym in Weston four years later. Owner and Director Stu Greenberg shares how Park Avenue Gymnastics has continued to serve the West Broward community for the past 28 years by teaching gymnastics skills to thousands of young children, coaching competitive gymnasts to national championships, and hosting the best birthday parties around.

What distinguishes Park Avenue from other gyms? I believe our attention to detail is what sets us apart from other gyms. We pride ourselves on the training and expertise our staff has, the careful planning that goes into everything we do, and the cleanliness of our facilities.

What is your teaching philosophy? Our goal is to develop fitness, character and self-esteem in children through the sport of gymnastics. Our guiding principle is that you can have fun while you’re learning.

What facilities and equipment do you offer? At the Weston gym we have all the equipment for Olympic gymnastics, as well as a wide variety of equipment for trampoline and tumbling, and equipment specially designed for pre-school gymnastics. At the Cooper City gym we have all of the same equipment as our Weston gym, with the addition of a swimming pool, martial arts studio, music studio and fitness center.

What types of gymnastics classes and programs do you offer? We offer a full

spectrum of gymnastics classes. We start with Parent & Child classes where the instructor teaches the parent how to work with their child in a gymnastics setting. The

48

goal is to improve their motor skills, balance, strength and flexibility. The next level is the preschool classes where the children continue to work on those elements while also starting to develop specific gymnastics skills. In the preschool classes, the parent is not with the child, only the instructor. It is at this level that we begin to focus on listening skills and discipline. Our next level is our recreational classes for children who are at least five-yearsold and in kindergarten or older. In these classes we continue to work on the things we did in preschool, but the skill levels get increasingly more advanced. After a child has advanced through all the levels of our “star system,” they are ready, if they choose, to go to the team level. Our team competes at all the USAG Junior Olympic Levels, one through ten.

What credentials and experience do your coaches have? Our coaches have anywhere from

ten to 40 years of experience. All are USA Gymnastics Certified coaches and have taken and passed the USAG Safety Certification course. In addition, they have passed the background check administered by USAG and have taken first aid courses. We also have a full-time, certified athletic trainer on staff and a physical therapist available at all times.

Do you have a competitive team? What are its accomplishments? Our

competitive teams compete all over the country in boys and girls gymnastics and trampoline and tumbling. Over the years, we have had hundreds of State and Regional champions, as well as many National qualifiers and National medal winners. In addition, we have had many gymnasts go on to compete in college gymnastics. Park Avenue gymnasts are considered some of the best in the state.

Aside from gymnastics, what other types of programs do you offer?

We offer a wide variety of programs at Park Avenue. We have taekwondo classes, swimming lessons, a fitness center

June 2013 | pembroke pines town times

for personal training, open play, even violin lessons. We are constantly adding new programs.

Do you offer birthday party packages?

Park Avenue Gymnastics is known for its outstanding birthday parties. We offer different packages depending on the length of the party and how many children are attending. A party consists of supervised play in the gym followed by a celebration in one of our party rooms. We pride ourselves on providing a safe environment and fun time for all.

Do you offer a summer camp program? We

have been doing summer camps since 1985. Every year we add something new and work to make things better and more exciting for our campers. Our camp activities include Olympic style gymnastics, dance, trampoline and tumbling, taekwondo, arts and crafts, swimming, games and movies. Included in the camp fee is a snack twice a day and lunch prepared by Exquisite Catering.

Anything else you would like readers to know about Park Avenue? The most impor-

tant thing to know about Park Avenue Gymnastics is that we are totally dedicated to the growth, development and well being of all the children who participate in our programs. We are a family business and treat everyone as if they are part of our family. Park Avenue Gymnastics offers two gyms to best serve the West Broward community. The Cooper City gym is located at 12239 SW 53rd Street (just off Flamingo Road), 954-434-0099. The Weston gym is located at 1728 N. Commerce Parkway, 954-659-8717.
