Make Time for Family
T
he kids are out of school and the tempera-
tures seem to reach new record levels every day. While we struggle to find meaningful things for our kids to do, we should not forget that summers are meant to spend time together as a family. We all get caught up in our busy professional lives and sometimes need to be reminded of why we are working so hard. Our children are the core of our family life and their bored expressions these days remind us to head out for one of those great American traditions -- the family summer vacation. So let’s turn off the smartphones and tablets for a few days, disconnect from the internet, and instead spend some time at the beach, visit the Everglades, read a book, go camping, play a board game, see a movie together, jump in the pool, or just chill out in the back yard. These quality moments together are what we and our children will remember for some time to come. So let’s enjoy the heat and each other. Have a great summer!

Pembroke Pines Resident Creates Recycling Program By Debby Teich
A
t 81, Arnold Freeman
of Pembroke Pines is doing his part to give back and he is encouraging others to do the same. He developed a successful recycling program in his own residential community. He is currently working with the City of Pembroke Pines to develop similar programs in other areas. Four years ago, Freeman moved to Hollybrook Golf and Tennis Club, a 55+ adult community with approximately 3,000 residents. He immediately noticed that the garbage truck came nearly every day and the recycling truck came only once a week. When he asked why the community did not place a greater emphasis on recycling, he was offered the opportunity to form a Recycling Arnold Freeman Committee and chair it. He gladly accepted. Freeman created flyers and began touting the benefits of recycling through the community’s newspaper and closed circuit television station. It was not long before he was able to make a difference for the environment, as well as
Hollybrook’s budget. As a result of his efforts, garbage truck pickups have been reduced from six days a week to three during the season and two during the off-season. This translates into a savings of $150,000 for Hollybrook, which pays for each pick up. Since residents are now recycling 25 tons a month instead of two, the recycling truck visits twice a week instead of once. Hollybrook receives $20 for each ton it recycles. Freeman did not stop there. Residents donate recycled shoes and textiles to third world countries and Hollybrook receives money in return. They collect electronics, ink cartridges, batteries and medication to make sure they are recycled properly. Residents also collect pop tops to donate to Ronald McDonald house, as well as cell phones to donate to AT&T for Women in Distress. They are also working on water and energy conservation projects. “The recycling programs have had a positive ecological, economic, and humanitarian impact,” said Freeman. “We have significantly reduced the amount of trash we send to the landfill in Pembroke Pines.” Freeman has been working with Jay Shechter, Director of Community Services, and others to help implement a $12,500 grant that the City of Pembroke Pines received from the Community Foundation of Broward for Re-engage, Recycle and Reinvigorate Pembroke Pines. The new program aims to help retired baby boomers find meaningful ways to give back to their communities in retirement. The City will use the grant to help increase recycling, reduce waste and encourage reuse in neighborhoods, condominium associations, HOA’s and multi-family buildings through a volunteer recycle program. “Arnold came up with an effective way to help reduce the carbon footprint,” said Shechter. “He is helping us develop a plan, as we reach out to other communities.” For information, call 954-450-6888 or visit www.ppines.com.

Natalie Belmonte Great Yards Award Contest Winners Are Announced By Debby Teich
I
n an effort to promote quality landscaping within Pembroke
Pines, the City sponsored the Natalie Belmonte Great Yards Award contest. The City of Pembroke Pines Landscape Advisory Board invited all interested homeowners to enter their properties for award consideration. The winners were recently announced at a City of Pembroke Pines City Commission meeting. The Landscape Advisory Board selected five yards; one from each of the four commission districts and one from at large. The At Large winners were Lisa Sigelbaum and Vicki Mills from Century Village. In District 2, Jan Scarth from Pembroke Lakes won. In District 3, Doris Wilk and Deborah Hasson from Pembroke Lakes won. In District 4, Kristi Davis from Chapel Trail won. The winners received granite plaques to display in their yards, as well as a Certificate of Appreciation signed by the Mayor. Four additional entrants also received a Certificate of Appreciation for participating. They were: Annette & David Tringo, Frank & Janet DelMastro, Deborah Shullo and Ruth Gomes. The award was created in memory of Natalie Belmonte, a well-known resident and businesswoman, who passed away in July 2011. “Natalie lost her life much too soon,” said Gloria McCluskey, Pembroke Pines Landscape Advisory Board Chairperson. “This award helps to capture the beauty of the butterflies and in the same spirit, remind us all of the true essence of Natalie, who had a love of gardening and butterflies.” Yards were judged by the Landscape Advisory Board on the following five components: Butterfly, Design and Function, Maintenance, Florida Friendly Value and Use of Hardscapes. Applicants provided a brief description of their property, its landscaping, and how it met the goals of the Natalie Belmonte Great Yards Award Contest. “Landscaping creates an inviting attractiveness which improves the look of

Plus, an improved environment also increases oxygen, helps reduce air and visual pollution and controls soil erosion.” For information, visit www.ppines.com or call 954-432-7370.
Why TAG USA Gymnastics is different... When you take a tour of TAG USA, you will immediately see what makes this gym so different and special. Michael Zoldan summed it up as he said “We brought new ideas to recreational gymnastics for this area by using lesson plans, fingerprinting all staff, awarding children with medals, having a clean gym, and guaranteeing that your child progresses. Although other gyms try to copy what we do....they can’t duplicate the TAG USA way!”
Classes:
Facility:
• TAG USA uses 3 floor managers to monitor class structure and safety. • Children learn with certified coaches that use structured lesson plans. • All athletes are awarded a medal and certificate of accomplishment. • Largest gym allows more repetitions with no crowds, no sharing, no waiting.
Team:
• Upscale comfortable couches and front row seats allow parents to watch all the action. • Full time staff assures clean and fresh smelling gym. • Largest gymnastics facility in the region with best prices. Visit and compare.
• All team levels train under USAG guidelines, not AAU. • 12 compulsory and optional girls coaches train with separate team equipment. • 3 Boys team coaches with separate boys area and complete training equipment • 2 trampoline & tumbling coaches use full rod floor, euro tramp, and double mini • State, Regional, and National qualifiers in girls & boys gymnastics and T&T teams

Seniors Test Their Spelling Abilities By Debby Teich
T
he tension was high during the 3 rd Annual Senior Spelling Bee, hosted by the City of Pembroke Pines Southwest Focal Point Community Center. Eighteen seniors were asked to spell words that would make a college English professor proud. Cordella Lewis was declared the winner after she spelled “diatomic” correctly. Cynthia Greenfield won second place and Jessie Kent won third place. The brave seniors sat quietly on the stage. When their names were called, they proceeded to the microphone. The spelling bee words were randomly selected. The list began with level one words and increased in difficulty. Some of the words included: semipermeable, embezzlement, polymorphic and

North Perry Airport Celebrates 55th Anniversary By Debby Teich
I
n 1943, H enry D. Perry, a dairy farmer , sold 640 acres of land
to the United States Navy for a flight-training field between Hollywood Boulevard and Pembroke Road. It became known as North Perry Field. Fiftyfive years later, the public gathered to celebrate the airport’s anniversary. Some arrived by car and others by plane. The free event featured a vintage car and airplane show, kid’s activities, aviation vendors, and more. Over 30 vintage aircraft, from the 1940’s to the present, lined one of the runways. More than 35 classic cars, including a 1913 Model T, several cars from the 1930’s, and a 2001 Lotus Esprit (the same make and model featured in the movie Pretty Woman) were on display on a taxi way. There were also over 30 aviation vendors, including flight schools, fixed base operators, clubs, and the Transportation Security Administration. Kids and families enjoyed a variety of activities, including bounce houses, obstacle courses, face painting, and train rides. They could take a 15-minute Discovery Flights for $25 or a 7-mile helicopter ride for $45. They also enjoyed a large selection of food from vendors, as well as live entertainment. Pembroke Pines Residents Observe Memorial Day By Debby Teich
O
ver two hundred people attended the
annual City of Pembroke Pines Memorial Day Ceremony, held at Donnith H. Fletcher Park in Pembroke Pines. “This year we had a significantly higher number of guests coming to our Ceremony to help us honor our United States Veterans,” said Francie Novo, Special Events Coordinator for the City of Pembroke Pines. In a moving speech, Pembroke Pines Commissioner Carl Shechter talked about how he and his two brothers fought in WWII and how much they love their country. There were several inspiring musical performances, including Katie Harmon, CJ Fam, Flanagan High School’s Drum Corps and taps player Krystal Romano. The Pembroke Pines Civil Air Patrol and Boy Scouts Troop 460 provided assistance prior to and during the ceremony. The Ceremony included a presentation of colors, guest speakers and the placement of a wreath by Pembroke Pines City Officials. Following the ceremony, light refreshments were served by the Pembroke Pines Women of the Moose Chapter 1056, compliments of Second Cup Coffee of Pembroke Pines. It is not a coincidence that the ceremony was held at Donnith H. Fletcher Park. On June 30, 1970, at the close of the Vietnam War, Donnith H. Fletcher and seven other soldiers were aboard helicopters which were shot down. Fletcher received a posthumous Purple Heart. Donnith was the first Pembroke Pines resident to die in the war and city officials made sure he would be remembered. In 1971, they named the ball fields and park near Johnson Street and University Drive after him. Pembroke Pines Mayor Receives Small Business Advocate Award By Debby Teich

Mayor Frank C. Ortis has worked hard to promote the growth of small businesses in the city. Last month, he was recognized for his efforts in front of an audience of over 100 community leaders and business owners at the Miramar Pembroke Pines Regional Chamber of Commerce meeting. Photo (l to r) Jeffrey Bean, United States Jeffrey Bean of the Conference of Mayors; Pembroke Pines Mayor United States Conference Frank C. One of Mayor Ortis’ many accomplishments, the 4th Annual Mayor’s Kids Day, was held last month. It celebrates Pembroke Pines’ children, while providing exposure for local businesses. Under the Mayor’s leadership, the City of Pembroke Pines created its first economic incentive for business recruitment. It has also been proactive in amending City codes to support small businesses and will be creating its first Economic Development Strategic Plan in the near future. Ortis, who

The Miramar Park of Commerce is one of the largest corporate parks in Broward County, and is home to thousands of employees from more than 160 national and international companies. Pines has been helping patients maximize the life of their natural teeth so they can have a beautiful, confident smile. The experienced staff offers sophisticated restorative and cosmetic dental care. They use state-of-the-art dental techniques to replace or restore natural teeth. If you want to look and feel better, call Smile Xperts today.
Can bridges cause problems? Bridges
can present some problems, because the natural teeth that lie on either side of the bridge are filed to accept the appliance. This step in the bridge-making procedure may make these teeth prone to bacterial plaque accumulations, decay, periodontal disease, and the possible need for future root canals.

the daughter of a pediatric medical doctor. In 1990, I graduated from La Javeriana University in Bogota, Colombia and immediately opened a dental office in Cali, Colombia. I learned at a very young age and early in my dental career the RIGHT and WRONG things to do in a dental practice. In 1994, I moved to the United States in order to become a dentist. I enrolled and graduated from the first dental graduating class of Nova Southeastern University in 2000. I worked for several other dentists. In 2002, I purchased an office in Pembroke Pines with three operatories and went to work full time. In October 2012, I opened a brand new 2,200 sq. ft. facility with seven operatories. Local Artists to Enter Don’t Fence Me In Contest By Debby Teich
C
alling all artists! The Pembroke Pines Arts & Culture
Advisory Board is sponsoring a public art project, Don’t Fence Me In. It is asking local artists to use their creativity to design and paint wood panels that will be displayed on fences around the Howard Foreman Health complex, which houses Studio 18 in the Pines. The deadline to submit work is July 12. Rose Colombo, Chair of the Pembroke Pines Arts and Culture Advisory Board, said that one of the board members suggested the idea and an artist from Studio 18 came up with the catchy name. “The arts have suffered during the economic downturn,” said Rose. “We are searching for ways to bring art to the public. Don’t Fence Me In is a low cost project that will be displayed in a high traffic area.” Artists must submit a sketch or rendering of what they would paint on a 4’x6’ wood panel, along with a non-refundable jury fee of $30 per entry. Artists may enter up to two designs. The theme is open to any family friendly subject matter. The work will be juried by the Arts & Culture Advisory Board. Selected artists will create their images on supplied wood panels. The City will seal the pieces to protect them from the sun and heat and then hang the finished pieces along selected fences in the City of Pembroke Pines. Artists are responsible for their own paint and supplies, other than the wood. Robyn Vegas, Cultural Arts Coordinator, says that the City is planning to start with this project and is then hoping to expand it to other areas in Pembroke Pines. “It is a great way to promote public art, as well as some of the great artists in the area,” said Robyn.
To participate in the competition, artists should submit via mail or in person a completed application and the Jury fee to: Fletcher Art Center, 7960 Johnson Street, Pembroke Pines, FL 33024. Attention: Robyn Vegas. For information, call Robyn Vegas at 954-986-5027 or send an email to rvegas@ppines.com.

PPCES-FSU Students Take a Trip to the Hospital By Debby Teich
S
tudents in two second - grade classes
at the Pembroke Pines Charter Elementary FSU campus will know what to expect if they are ever in need of medical attention at a hospital. They recently took a field trip to Memorial Miramar Hospital as part of Kids and the Power of Work (KAPOW), a program designed to connect a student’s classroom learning to their future in the work place. KAPOW’s lessons help students discover different jobs, what it takes to do them, and how to be successful in work and life. The KAPOW program has been educating the children of Pembroke Pines with real life, hands-on experiences since 2001. The program introduces students to career awareness through seven one-hour professionally developed lessons taught by business volunteers in the classroom and culminates with a visit to the workplace. “Students need to see that school is relevant to their lives, as well as the vision they have for their futures,” said John Casbarro, who coordinates the KAPOW program in South Florida.
“KAPOW answers the questions that they are always asking, such as ‘Why do I have to learn this?’ and ‘What good will this do for me?’ The volunteers motivate the students by sharing their life work and life experiences. They show them that everything they learn in school is important and valuable to succeed in work, and life.”

Throughout the school year, volunteer and 80-year-old retired chemistry teacher Marie Shotland (aka Grandma Marie) met with students in Marjorie Lasnetski’s and Alice Cabrera’s 2nd grade classes to teach them about the importance of community involvement, leadership, communication and teamwork. She used hands-on fun activities to
involve the children and keep them interested. Lasnetski says that the kids looked forward to her visits. “The students developed a bond with her and enjoyed her lessons/activities,” said Lasnetski. “I enjoyed watching the excitement and level of enthusiasm the children had when she came in and taught. She is a lovely lady with great ideas.” For the last KAPOW lesson, approximately 40 students from both classes, along with Shotland, took a field trip to Memorial Miramar Hospital. The children toured the lab, where they looked at red and white blood cells under a microscope. In the pediatric emergency room, they discussed what they can expect if they ever have to visit, from arrival to release. In the X-Ray room, a technician explained how an x-ray

machine works. They also participated in a hands-on “Teddy Bear Clinic,” where they rotated to four different stations and learned how to care for their sick bears. “The children saw people working in a real job, so they could see that all the skills Marie taught them were essential to have when they grow up and get jobs,” said Lasnetski. “The kids learned that it takes many skills to work in a hospital, such as reading, math, writing, cooperation (team-work), good attitude, respect, communication, and decision-making.” KAPOW is always looking for business or individual volunteers, as well as schools interested in participating in the program. For information, visit www.kapowlfs.org; send an email to john.casbarro@ gmail.com or call 954-680-3916.

Flat Feet & Tight Calf Muscles: A Bad Combination By Robert H. Sheinberg, D.P.M.
T
he foot has two primary functions during
gait. It first acts as a shock absorber when the foot hits the ground. This helps soften the impact during walking and running. Once it is ready to push off it acts as a rigid lever. This helps the foot plant to the ground very firmly and allows a person to push off very smoothly and efficiently. Flat feet occur when the ligaments connecting the bones together are loose. They allow the foot to act like a loose bag of bones when they hit the ground. This allows the foot to absorb shock very well. However, it does not allow it to act like a rigid lever during push off. In an attempt to stabilize the arch and to improve walking and running the muscles in the lower leg have to work harder than normal during activity. These muscles usually fatigue prematurely, causing pain. Pain may also be present in the inner knee and the lower back region as well as the body tries to stabilize an unstable foot.

The calf muscle is the large muscle in the back of the lower leg. When this muscle is excessively tight it puts further stress on the arch causing the arch to flatten further. The muscles have to work even harder, making it difficult for children and teenagers to participate in sports and activities without a significant amount of discomfort and fatigue. Verifying this combination is critical to the overall wellness of an individual. If the calf muscle is excessively tight it should be put in a cast to stretch it. Once the calf muscle is stretched then an orthotic is made for the foot to give it better balance and position. Occasionally physical therapy is necessary to keep the muscles flexible and to also improve overall coordination and balance in the person experiencing the problems. This produces a great long-term outcome. A failure to diagnose and correctly treat this problem will almost always lead to long-term problems. These include chronic pain and possible arthritis in the foot and ankle. It will also aggravate underlying knee and back problems. The earlier the treatment, the better the long-term result. Orthotics should not be made until the calf muscles have been adequately stretched out. Robert Sheinberg, DPM, is a Board Certified Foot and Ankle Surgeon, Fellow American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, Diplomat American Board of Podiatric Surgery. He is a partner in Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialists of South Florida and specializes in treating infants, children, teens and adults. hen a spouse is ordered to pay Permanent Alimony, it will terminate upon the re-marriage of the receiving spouse or the death of either party. Does that mean if one of the above conditions is not met alimony continues forever? Not necessarily. Florida law allows a party to modify or terminate an alimony obligation if there has been “a substantial change of circumstance.” A substantial change of circumstance requires an involuntary change which could not be anticipated at the time of the Final Judgment. Therefore, if someone voluntarily reduces his income, by quitting a job or switching to one which pays less, he cannot seek a modification. The above would be considered a voluntary change, which is not cause for a reduction. Can an individual who is paying alimony voluntarily retire and either reduce or terminate his alimony obligation? Retirement, unless it’s a mandatory retirement, is voluntary. Does a person paying alimony have to work until he dies? The answer is no! A person has the right to retire, but only under certain circumstances. The courts have ruled that a person can retire at an age which is customary in the industry in which he is employed. There are court cases which approve retirement at 55, for a law enforcement officer who is eligible after 30 years of service. There are court cases which state that a person cannot retire until he reached normal retirement age, generally considered to be over 65. Therefore, every situation is different, based upon the circumstances. The proposed alimony reform bill would have clarified this, but as we all know Governor Scott vetoed it.

Just because a person retires doesn’t necessarily mean that alimony terminates. It may mean that alimony will not terminate, but be reduced according to the income the paying spouse will be receiving during retirement. The court needs to consider not only the ability to pay, but the continuing needs of the receiving spouse. The court cannot leave either party in poverty. An individual’s assets can also be taken into consideration. As you can see there is no definitive rule as to this issue, since each case must be considered individually. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. For information or a free consultation, call 954-385-9160.

Proven to be both a safe and effective solution, as well as FDA approved, GenesisPlus treats nail infection (onychomycosis), more commonly known as toenail fungus. The most common sources of infection include swimming pools, public showers, gyms and nail salons. Tight fitting shoes and nail trauma can lead to infection also. If detected, you have become an excellent candidate for GenesisPlus. GenesisPlus passes through the nail and the surrounding tissue with no adverse effects. The laser light is absorbed by the pigment in the fungi, which causes the pigment to heat, and this kills or damages the fungal organism. The treatment can result in your nails growing normally. A single treatment session takes approximately 40 minutes to treat five to ten nails. Most patients show improvement after one treatment and total number of treatments can vary. Most patients describe the procedure as being comfortable with a small hot pinch at the end which resolves quickly. The majority of patients can resume normal activities immediately. Successful treatment results in new nail growth and healthy nails, which may take up to 12 months. Dr. Neal M. Bullock’s office is located at 17013 Pines Boulevard, in Pembroke Pines. How to Effectively Wipe Out Second Mortgages, Avoid Foreclosure and Stay in Your Home By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. Foreclosure Defense and Bankruptcy Protection Attorney
T
housands of homeowners in our community are 20-50%
upside-down on their home mortgages and are looking for a way out. Some are frustrated in their attempts to modify their home loans, and others simply choose to give up their home because they don’t know or are unsure of their rights. Wouldn’t it be much easier to save your home if you only had a first mortgage to worry about? Also, since the real estate market is improving, think of all the equity you could build up years from now if you could wipe out your second mortgage or credit line today? For homeowners who have taken out a second mortgage on their home and lines of credit, facing our current economic climate can be particularly challenging. This is especially true if the second mortgage or credit line is about to convert or has converted from an interest only to a principal plus interest payment. Additional liens on your home beyond your initial mortgage, however, can be wiped out through a Chapter 13 personal bankruptcy filing. When mortgage liens are removed from a property during bankruptcy proceedings, it is referred to as “stripping” the lien. Many bankruptcy courts permit a second mortgage or line of credit to be extinguished if the total amount owed on the first mortgage exceeds the fair market value of the home. For example, if you owe $200,000 on the first mortgage of your principal residence, and $150,000 on your second mortgage of that same residence, BUT your principal residence is only worth $195,000, the $150,000 second mortgage would be wiped out in a Chapter 13 bankruptcy without any tax consequences. In a Chapter 13 bankruptcy, second mortgages and lines of credit can also be completely eliminated down to the appraised value of the home on investment properties. To qualify, the court will generally require proof that the home is worth less than the amount owed on the first mortgage, which can be established through a certified appraisal that is accepted by the court. In an environment where home prices in most markets have fallen at least 30% or more, many borrowers could qualify for this option. Tax liens and association liens can also be stripped off in Chapter 13 reorganization proceedings to the extent that the lien does not attach to equity in the property. More importantly, if your income level qualifies, you will be able to catch up on any past due mortgage payments through affordable installments spread out over 3-5 years, or even modify your first mortgage through a loss mitigation program offered by South Florida bankruptcy courts. This allows you and your family to stay in your home, and none of your creditors will be able to contact you, harass you with annoying phone calls or proceed with a foreclosure during the bankruptcy. More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new consumer-friendly DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home,” available for purchase on our website. If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a FREE copy during the appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free consultation, or visit www. arcialawfirm.com for more information.

Do My Wisdom Teeth Need to Be Removed? By Dr. P. Stuart Seider
W
hen children enter their mid -teens and become young
adults, it is considered the “Age of Wisdom.” It is a time when removal of third molars becomes a “rite of passage.” That is why we use the term wisdom teeth for third molars. Not everyone must have their wisdom teeth removed. Sometimes wisdom teeth erupt normally into a person’s mouth and are perfectly functional. Others might have impacted teeth, which should be evaluated and a determination made as to the necessity of their removal. Some of us do not even develop wisdom teeth. I like to call these people “New Man.” As time has passed, man’s diet has changed from a tough grinding diet of meats and uncooked foods to a softer diet of cooked and processed foods. The need for multiple molars has been “genetically” reduced. Hence, from once having four molars, we are down to three and in some cases two.

Armando De Feria, M.D., P.A. Marlene Tages-Cordova, D.O., P.A. As evolution has progressed and the average size of a human’s jaw has decreased, the space needed for a full set of 32 teeth has been diminished. In those cases where there is inadequate jaw length, the wisdom teeth virtually do not fit and can become “impacted.” They become wedged between another tooth and the jaw bone or there is inadequate room in the jawbone for the tooth to grow in all the way. The tooth may even be at the same height as the rest of the teeth; however, due to the decreased length of the jawbone, eruption is not possible. Each of these cases must be evaluated individually to decide whether the wisdom teeth are impacted and whether or not there is adequate space for eruption. Once that determination is made, the patient is informed and a treatment plan is developed. There are then anesthetic choices that the patient must make in consultation with the Oral Surgeon. Although some procedures can be done with a local anesthetic (novocaine alone), most people opt to be sedated or put to sleep for the amount of time it takes for removal of the teeth. This requires the patient to be in relatively good health. On the day of the procedure, the patient should have an empty stomach. He/ she should also be accompanied by a parent, if the patient is under 18 years old, or a driver over the age of 18, if the patient is over 18 years of age. There are other requirements that will be explained to the patient at the time of initial consultation. The appointment is usually made in the morning, since the patient will have an empty stomach. It also avoids hunger and accidental drinking or eating prior to the procedure. It is important to consult with an Oral Surgeon to determine whether or not you should have your wisdom teeth removed. An Oral Surgeon is a Dentist who has completed four or more post-graduate years in a hospital setting, doing only surgery and anesthesia training. Your Oral Surgeon is there to help you make an informed decision about your wisdom teeth. Dr. P. Stuart Seider’s practice is located at Broward Oral Surgery Associates, 3157 North University Drive, Suite #104. For information, call 954-431-1600 or visit www.browardoralsurgery.com.

Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, breast augmentation is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery operations in our country. Patients will often come to our office wanting their breasts to be fuller and are not certain which type of surgery is best for them. Is an implant necessary, or lift, or both? The technique used to enhance a woman’s breast should be individualized based on each woman’s personal appearance goals and unique anatomy. A common misconception is that breast implants make a woman’s breast stay up longer and not sag. This is not true. A breast implant adds volume or size to the breast. An implant can increase breast width, projection, and firmness, but doesn’t prevent the breast from sagging with time, especially if a woman doesn’t wear a bra. When a woman loses breast tissue volume or size as a result of weight loss, pregnancy, or through natural deficiency in breast development, then placing a breast implant beneath the glandular tissue or under the muscle (pectoralis) will enhance the appearance. When there is excess breast skin, such that the nipple and areolar position is now below the fold of the breast, then a breast lift or mastopexy is most likely necessary. This procedure involves removing the excess skin and tightening the remaining breast tissue to elevate or lift the nipple and areola and the breast itself. The type of mastopexy procedure utilized depends on the shape and the degree of sagging (or ptosis). There are three main types of breast lifts depending on where the incisions are placed on the breast. Periareolar (Benelli, around the nipple only), circumvertical (lollipop, around the nipple and from the nipple to the fold), and inverted “T”, or anchor incision same as above with an additional incision along the inframammary crease or fold. All are safe and effective techniques for lifting the breast depending on the degree of sagging. A breast augmentation and mastopexy can be safely performed at the same time, depending on the patient’s anatomy and individual history. An implant can improve the aesthetic appearance of the breasts when volume or size enhancement is necessary, in addition to skin tightening or lifting. In general terms, if a patient is an A or small B cup bra with sagging breast tissue, a breast lift and implant would be beneficial if the patient desires an increase in breast size or projection. When a patient’s breasts are a full C or D cut, then the breast lift alone may be sufficient depending on her individual breast appearance goals. As with facial rejuvenation and body contouring, there is no single breast enhancement procedure that is applicable to every patient. A thorough preoperative consultation and discussion of each woman’s individual appearance goals is essential to ensuring the proper surgery technique is performed. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and consultant for Allergan Medical and has achieved the Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Innovative Hip Replacement Surgery: Minimally Invasive Direct Anterior Surgery There may be a number of reasons for persistent hip pain. When the pain interferes with day-to-day functioning, and limits a person’s ability to walk normally, sit comfortably or perform daily activities, it’s time to seek medical advice. In some cases, pain can be resolved with conservative treatments such as ice, physical therapy, rest, activity modification, pain relievers or injections. In other cases, surgery becomes necessary. Cleveland Clinic Florida’s, Orthopaedic Surgeon Juan Suarez, MD, specializes in adult hip and knee replacement surgery and says it is important to evaluate each patient to determine a treatment approach that is best for him or her. “We perform a thorough evaluation of the patient through a medical history, physical examination, x-rays and other imaging to evaluate the cause of hip pain, Dr. Suarez said. “After a thorough examination, if the patient is a candidate for hip replacement surgery, we ensure that he or she fully understands what to expect before, during and after the procedure.”
Physical Therapy Physical therapy is the key to recovering mobility and can begin the first day after surgery. Cleveland Clinic Florida offers a rehabilitation program with techniques that facilitate patients’ recovery. After physical therapy, patients can usually return to recreational Juan Suarez, MD pastimes such as cycling, golf, Cleveland Clinic Florida, skiing, tennis and horseback Orthopaedic Surgeon riding. The risk of dislocation is also less using the direct anterior technique. Patients are not required to follow strict precautions as are necessary following other traditional surgical methods.
To schedule a consultation, please call 800.639.DOCTOR, or visit clevelandclinicflorida.org.
Minimally Invasive Hip Replacement Cleveland Clinic Florida is one of few facilities offering patients a minimally invasive hip replacement surgery called “direct anterior.” This approach enables the surgeon to insert the hip prosthesis through a small incision at the front of the hip, as opposed to the side or back where the surgeon has to cut through muscles and tendons. Faster Recovery Due to smaller incisions and less muscle trauma, patients recover faster with the direct anterior approach than with traditional hip replacement surgery. In some instances, patients are able to return to work and resume normal activities in as little as two weeks. Patients also endure a much shorter hospital stay and report less pain, which reduces the need for pain medication. The use of assistive devices such as canes and walkers is also substantially reduced. In contrast, the average recovery time with traditional hip replacement surgery is two to six months, making the direct anterior hip replacement surgery an appealing alternative.
Cleveland Clinic Florida
Total orthopaedic care. Only a step away. Cleveland Clinic Florida offers a full spectrum of orthopaedic and sports medicine care for the hand, shoulder, hip, knee, foot and ankle. It’s Hurricane Season: Are You Prepared? By Matt Chrupcala
F
rom J une through N ovember , hurricanes are
at their peak. During a hurricane, heavy rains and catastrophic winds barrel through coastal areas and can severely damage or destroy homes and businesses. To help you plan and remain safe during these potentially deadly storms, we’ve gathered the following safety tips for you and your family:
Staying Safe in the Storm During Hurricane Season: ▸▸ Plan evacuation routes and designate a “post-disaster contact person” that family members know to call once the storm is over. ▸▸ Stock up on items such as bottled water, canned goods, manual can/bottle opener, flashlights, battery-operated radio, nails, tarps and plywood. ▸▸ Keep an up-to-date log of all of your possessions with photographs and videos, and review your home insurance policy. ▸▸ Trim your trees and shrubs to minimize damage.

When There Is a Hurricane Threat: ▸▸ Refill your prescriptions, fill-up your car with gas and withdraw a week’s worth of cash since power outages may interrupt these services temporarily. ▸▸ Place important and valuable papers, such as your log of possessions, in waterproof bags. ▸▸ Cover windows and doors and secure outdoor furniture. ▸▸ If you live in a trailer home and are told to evacuate, do so immediately. During a Hurricane: ▸▸ Listen to your battery-operated radio for instructions from the local authorities on evacuation and safety guidelines. ▸▸ Seek shelter in an interior room away from windows, such as a closet. If you hear the winds subside, do not assume that the storm is over. The calm may be the eye of the storm, in which the worst part is yet to come. ▸▸ If the electricity goes out, use a flashlight to see; do not use candles. After a Hurricane: ▸▸ Stay inside until notice has been issued. If you were told to evacuate, do not return home until you have been given permission by the authorities. ▸▸ When inspecting your home for damage, wear sturdy shoes and clothing as protection. ▸▸ Contact a trained expert to turn off damaged utilities and appliances instead of trying to do it yourself. ▸▸ Drink only bottled water until tap water is deemed safe. Planning is important when it comes to hurricanes, and that includes having the proper home insurance. Contact INEX Risk Services of Florida, LLC at (954) 251-3673 or mchrupcala@inexrisk.com to learn more about all our insurance and risk management solutions.

Pembroke Pines Update By Mayor Frank C. Ortis
W
e are in hurricane season once again and I
cannot emphasize how important it is for each one of us to be prepared for a hurricane or a tropical storm. As you may already know from the reports about Tropical Storm Adrian, plenty of rain drenched numerous parts of Florida, causing serious flooding. The recent rain events in South Florida affected many areas of eastern Miami-Dade and Broward Counties with flood waters that damaged vehicles and people’s homes. Flooded streets affected traffic and drainage. It is extremely important that you pay attention to media reports. Our Emergency Operations Center communicates information about Pembroke Pines to the media regarding building closures and garbage collection. Once there is information out there about a storm system or hurricane coming our way, then stay tuned to get all the information you can to make effective plans for your safety and the safety of your family.

Coming into contact with them is extremely dangerous. For those of you with access to a computer, you can visit our City of Pembroke Pines website at www.ppines.com for emergency bulletin updates. A Edit Patient’ Headline s First Gynecological Visit Is Not Like Her Mother’s edit author
by Dr. Audry Castellanos-Vidaurre, MD
I
’ ll never forget the first time I went to the gynecologist. I was 14 years old. I was scared, shy and did not really understanding what would happen to me. I remember my mom trying to comfort me to help me confront something I knew nothing about. Despite her measures, I’ll never forget that time and the sense of embarrassment I felt. Fortunately, times have changed! Thanks to recently published guidelines, a young girl does not need a pap smear until the age of 21. That being said, it is still important to meet a gynecologist before you actually “need” him/her. I personally talk to all of my patients about bringing in their teen daughters to meet me and break down that misconception of what it means to come to the gynecologist. This is recommended between the ages of 13-15 years of age. There are great resources out there that explain to teens what to expect if they need an exam. The first visit is usually just building on trust.

The majority of moms believe they have a great relationship with their daughter. The reality is that these girls may be holding back pertinent information about their sexuality and, more importantly, about their own bodies. They usually ask me about menstrual cycles, painful periods, vaccinations or sexual activities. We also discuss acne, weight, alcohol, drugs, smoking and emotional issues. The attitude is to promote healthy life styles. When these girls arrive at the office, my staff and I always go out of our way to make them feel comfortable and to reassure them that they are safe. It breaks my heart when they come to me with misconceptions and beliefs that their friends have instilled in them. Even worse is when they have already experimented and are not protected. Much of the information they share can be kept confidential. Once they believe this is true, it is amazing to see how comfortable they become. They begin sharing everything, including their plans for the future, hopes, dreams and aspirations. The greatest sense of fulfillment I receive is watching these girls grow up to be responsible women. Ladies, we need to be open minded. Take a deep breath and allow our girls to enter womanhood with a sense of responsibility and empower them to make the right choices. I feel that the greatest gift we can give our daughters is the ability to be self-sufficient. Feel free to call today and schedule your daughter her first gynecological consultation. Most insurance is accepted. Ladies First OBGYN, LLC is located at 601 N Flamingo Road, Suite 311, in Pembroke Pines. Tito is a 4-month-old German Shepherd. His favorite person is Jordan. His favorite toys are ropes and balls, as well as a good flip-flop once in a while. He likes to play with his best friend Chichi (a Chihuahua soon to be only the size of his head). He does not like when he is told not to chew on the remote, shoes, furniture, etc. Like most puppies, his favorite thing to do is to play. He was last seen learning new tricks, for treats of course.
