“Treat” Yourself to Special Family Time This Halloween Finally, we have settled back into our regular routine: rushing the kids to and from school and shuttling them around town to after-school activities. Football season is in full swing and summer vacation is now a distant memory. The temperature is finally starting to cool off a bit. With the heat and humidity dropping, we can get back to enjoying outdoor family activities and gatherings with friends. With the cooler weather comes every kid’s favorite fall holiday – Halloween. It’s time to decorate the house with pumpkins, stock up on candy bars and lollipops, and take your little ones shopping for costumes. Pretty soon our streets will be filled with pint-sized superheroes, princesses, witches and rock stars. Be sure to have your camera ready to capture these precious moments, for these are memories that will last a lifetime.

Find Hidden Treasures at the Antiques and Collectibles Show By Debby Teich

T

housands of treasure seekers are expected to attend the

City of Pembroke Pines Antiques and Collectibles Show. The event benefits the City of Pembroke Pines Southwest Focal Point Community Center and will be held there on Saturday, October 19, from 9am to 5pm, and Sunday, October 20, from 10am to 4pm. Now in its tenth year, the spring and fall shows have become well known for offering a wide variety of fine antiques and collectibles in a beautiful venue. Over 50 antique dealers will share a treasure trove of quality items, including artwork, jewelry, furniture, vintage linens and textiles, chinaware, toys, records, books and much more. There will also be an antique appraiser and Orchid vender. The Paradise Café will be open for breakfast, lunch and snacks. “The funds we raise at the Antiques and Collectibles Show, through admission and renting space to dealers, makes it possible to offer services at a free or reduced rate for those in need,” said Jay Shechter, Director of Community Services and Housing for the City of Pembroke Pines. “In antique circles, this is considered a must attend event.” Pembroke Pines resident Julie Underwood has attended the show for the last few years. “It is so much fun to browse through all of the collectibles,” said Underwood. “You never know what you might find. I have purchased several

Fire Explorers Work Hard to Reopen Safety Town By Debby Teich

F

or many years , Safety Town ’ s mini -village at C.B.

Smith Park offered pre-school children a place to learn safety education through interactive presentations and hands-on participation. After becoming run down, it was forced to close in September 2011. Fire Explorers from Pembroke Pines and Tamarac have been busy making repairs, so it can reopen in the next couple of months. Memorial Healthcare System provided the funding for the project. After Broward County park employees pressure cleaned and landscaped the area, the Fire Explorers replaced old rotten wood, primed, painted, and much more. “The Fire Explorers have been working hard to revitalize the area,” said Rick Scopa, Public Relations Officer for the Pembroke Pines Fire Department. “We are excited to reopen Safety Town, so we can begin teaching the children about safety awareness and accident prevention skills again.” Once it is open, arranged field trips will be conducted throughout the week for groups of 15 to 60 students. Children will have an opportunity to explore the miniature town, which features working traffic signals, street signs, crosswalks and railroad crossings. Riding on bicycles, they will visit five buildings, including a school, fire station, police station, city hall and hospital. At each station, a police officer, firefighter or other professional will reinforce a safety message. At the Bike Safety Station, children will learn the basics of bike and car safety. At the Fire Station, a firefighter will talk to the kids about fire safety. They will discuss “stop, drop and roll” and “crawl low in smoke.” Scopa says that they are hoping to add a fireman’s pole and safety room, where they can practice what they are learning. At the Parks and Recreation Station, a park naturalist will educate kids about

hiking and wilderness safety. They will also learn about the importance of respecting animals, plants and shrubs found in parks. At the Water Safety Station, certified lifeguards will teach the children about “buddy swimming,” basic rescue techniques, and safe behavior in and around the water. At the Police Station, a uniformed police officer will teach kids the basics of “stranger danger,” as well as how and when to dial 911 in the event of an emergency. C.B. Smith Park is located at 900 N. Flamingo Road. For more information about Safety Town or to schedule a free field trip, call Memorial Healthcare System’s Community Relations Department at 954-265-0982.

Volunteers Needed for Special Olympics Flag Football Program By Debby Teich

For the second year, the Special Population Program in Pembroke Pines is offering a Unified Special Olympics Sports Program for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The athletes are currently working on their flag football skills and need volunteers to assist them. The City of Pembroke Pines Special Populations programs are designed to provide quality recreational and educational opportunities for individuals with special needs and varying disabilities, including intellectual and physical disabilities. The programs may be inclusionary, where participants are incorporated into regular programs, and may include modifications or adaptations as needed. Flag football practices are held at Chapel Trail Park. The Special Olympics Flag Football teams are coed and no prior experience playing flag football is required for Unified Partners. Many of the players have siblings who have volunteered to be Unified Partners and play on the team with their brother/sister Special Olympics athlete. “To have siblings practice together and work as a unified team is beyond words,” said Mary Wilson Palacios, Special Populations Coordinator for the

Pembroke Pines Remembers 9/11 By Debby Teich

O

ver 150 people attended the 12th Annual City of Pembroke Pines September 11th Patriot Day Remembrance Ceremony at the Pembroke Pines City Center 9/11 Memorial. The audience was filled with survivors, families who lost loved ones, local fire fighters, police task force units, dignitaries, and many more. Students from the City of Pembroke Pines FSU Charter Elementary School Chorus, many of whom had not been born in 2001, sang patriotic songs prior to the official 8:35am welcome by Pembroke Pines Vice-Mayor Angelo Castillo. The ceremony continued with an Invocation by Pastor Peter Tokar and the Presentation of Colors by the City of Pembroke Pines Police and the Fire Department Honor Guard. Following the Pledge of Allegiance, Joy Torres sang the National Anthem. At 8:46 am, the fire and police sirens sounded off for ten seconds, the flags were lowered, and there was a moment of silence. The moving ceremony continued with the ringing of the fire station bell and Kenny Ahern, from the Saint Andrew Pipe and Drum Band, playing Amazing Grace on the bagpipes.

Vice Mayor Castillo read a Proclamation signed by Mayor Frank C. Ortis, who was away on business. Following the Benediction by Pastor Tokar, Joy Torres sang God Bless America and guests toured the 9/11 Memorial. As the last guests were leaving, a symbolic rainbow filled the sky. D

r. Jesse Z. Shaw, DO, gets you “back in the game” at his state-of the art facility, AllPro Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, PA. After spending the last two years at the Mayo Clinic, Dr. Shaw recently returned to his hometown of Pembroke Pines to provide patients of all ages with top-notch orthopedic treatments and care. All-Pro provides advanced, minimally invasive techniques for surgical procedures and orthopedic care in a friendly and compassionate environment.

Dr. Shaw answered some commonly asked questions about his practice:

What is your (Dr. Shaw’s) background? I am

fellowship-trained in orthopedic sports medicine from the Florida Orthopedic Institute in Tampa. I have cared for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New York Yankees during spring training. I was also the University of Tampa Women’s Soccer physician during their national championship season in 2007. From 2008-2010, I cared for patients, while on staff at Imperial Point and Holy Cross Hospitals. I recently returned to my hometown of Pembroke Pines, after spending the last two years working at the Mayo Clinic in Georgia.

What is the main focus of your practice? I specialize in ACL, knee ligament and meniscal surgery, as well as complex shoulder injuries, such as impingement, rotator cuff injury, and instability. I also treat patients for orthopedic conditions that are not sports related, such as arthritis, knee replacement, hip replacement, complex shoulder replacement, fractures and trauma injuries. What is your philosophy? We take the time to properly diagnose patients. We ensure that they understand their specific condition, as well as all of the treatments available to them, including rehabilitation for a complete recovery. Describe your team. Our highly trained team of surgeons, nurses, physician assistants, rehabilita-

tion specialists and medical support personnel work with patients and their primary care physicians to develop a customized treatment plan. If they need surgery, they can be confident that they will receive the most advanced surgical procedures, using the latest technology.

Describe your typical patient? We work with

patients of all ages, from youth to adults. We serve professional and amateur student-athletes, as well as recreational sports enthusiasts and regular patients who need orthopedic treatments for shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, ankle, and back injuries.

Describe your full-service approach. Our full-service approach is designed to return the patient to maximum function as quickly and safely as possible. It integrates the patient’s primary care physician and surgeon with a host of clinical support staff. This integrated approach enables our clinical team to properly evaluate a patient’s condition and prepare him/her mentally and physically for the procedure by continuously monitoring and managing the entire preand post-surgical performance and progress. This unique continuum of care approach produces outstanding clinical and patient satisfaction results. Describe your facility. At All-Pro, we provide state-of-the-art health care delivery, including electronic medical records, digital x-rays, and the most advanced minimally invasive techniques for surgical procedures and orthopedic care.

Do you offer same day appointments?

Accidents and injuries are unexpected. We welcome and encourage same day appointments for patients that just cannot wait. How do you help injured athletes? Injured athletes of all skill levels need an integrated, comprehensive sports medicine program. We use skilled, hands-on evaluation and diagnostic testing to create the best plan of care. Our clinical team also educates area athletes, coaches and parents about injury prevention and recognition, proper strength building, flexibility, conditioning, endurance and training techniques.

fractures; reconstructive surgery related to trauma; and reconstructive surgery related to arthritis or deformity. Our experienced personnel are certified in custom casting, splinting and orthotics.

Do you treat work-related injuries? We view those injured in the workplace as “industrial athletes,” which is why we help you return to work as quickly and safely as possible. Our coordinated evaluation and treatment protocols are designed to provide timely, quality care. Our team of physicians, nurses, physical and occupational therapists and other staff members provide fully integrated care that will get you back to work fast. How do you help patients with hip replacement? Hip replacement is a surgical procedure in which the hip joint is replaced by a prosthetic implant. Hip replacement surgery can be performed as a total replacement or a hemi (half) replacement. It is generally conducted to relieve arthritis pain or fix severe physical joint damage as part of hip fracture treatment. Hip replacement is currently the most common orthopaedic operation, though patient satisfaction short and long term varies widely.

How do you help patients who need joint replacement? Caring for a severely injured or diseased joint involves skilled, hands-on evaluation and appropriate diagnostic testing. We offer the latest technology for diseases and injuries to all major joints.

How do you help patients with issues related to hand and upper extremities? We use our clinical expertise to evaluate, treat and rehabilitate the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder. Our surgical team treats: soft tissue sprains, strains and contusions, overuse and traumatic injuries, degenerative and rheumatoid arthritis, rotator cuff tears, carpal tunnel syndrome, fractures, dislocations and more.

How do you help patients with foot and ankle problems? We use the latest assessment and treatment tools to correct foot and ankle problems, including sports-related injuries; complex

Library Offers High School 2 College Series By Debby Teich

A

pplying for college can be a very confusing and overwhelm -

ing process. It involves searching through college catalogs and websites, filling out applications and financial aid forms, and much more. Most students and parents have questions along the way, but do not always know where to find the answers. The Broward County South Regional Broward College Library is offering some assistance through its “High School 2 College Series.” “So many parents and students visit the library looking for books to help them with the college process, but there are very few classes,” said Melissa Karnosh, Youth Services Section Supervisor. “The series is intended to give them some guidance. We are also hoping that it will encourage more students to begin thinking about college at a younger age.” The High School 2 College Series will be held on four consecutive Saturdays, at 2pm. It is for students, ages 15 -18, and parents are encouraged to attend with them. Space is limited and registration is required. There is no charge for the classes, which are as follows:

▸  College 101 – On October 5, Nancy Berlin of the Berlin Consulting Group will present Providing Knowledge 4 Success. The workshop will focus on providing students with successful tools for the college application process. ▸  There is Financial Aid! – On October 12, find out about the many types of higher education funding (e.g. grants, loans, scholarships) and

how to apply for them, including federal and state resources. ▸  Preparing for Success in College – On October 19, Chris Miller, Coordinator of Student Success for Broward College, will help students identify their learning styles and determine how this knowledge can impact their academic success. ▸  Let’s Get to Work – On November 2, Adam Derosa, Coordinator of the Career Center for Broward College, will talk to students about career planning. Many high school students think that career planning is something that begins once they have entered college. However, career planning is a process that begins before high school, and most naturally should continue in the college years. During this session, students will be introduced to the Broward College “Career Cruiser” and find out about important tools that can help them begin the career exploration process. Open since 1983, the Broward County South Regional Broward College Library is a partnership library located on the South campus of Broward College. It serves the southern communities of Broward County, as well as the faculty, students, and staff of Broward College’s Judson A. Samuels (South) Campus. For information on the “High School 2 College Series,” call 954-201-8825 and select “youth services.”

Charter Middle School to Host Community Garage Sale By Debby Teich

A

s the holidays and N ew Year approach , many are looking for

ways to get rid of clutter. They are also in search of bargains. The City of Pembroke Pines Charter West Middle School can help with both. On October 26, from 7am to 1pm, it will be hosting the 4th Annual Family Garage Sale. Proceeds will benefit the school’s technology fund. “We hope everyone will come out to support the school’s efforts,” said Cary Alfonso PTSA Vice President. The PTSA is assisting with the collections. It will also help set up and run the event. The garage sale will be held on the school’s campus in the cafeteria, courtyard and airnasium. More than 300 families are expected to participate. To raise additional funds, the PTSA will be selling coffee, donuts, water, soda, hot dogs, burgers, chips, and more. Donations will be accepted every day through October 25. Children who attend the school can bring items to their first period classroom. Parents can also drop off items in the car line on October 4, 16, 16, 21, 22, 23, 24, and 25. The PTSA will price all of the items for resale. Some of the things most in demand include: televisions, bicycles, tools, jewelry, furniture, gently used clothing (no undergarments), books, kitchen item, toys (no

Before

stuffed animals), and electronics (fully functional with attachments/cables). First period classes will be competing to see which one gets the most donations. The winning class in each grade will get a prize. The event started four years ago as a fundraiser for kids in the school and community with cancer. The last two years, proceeds have benefited the school’s technology. With funds raised, which amount to approximately $8,500 annually, the school has purchased LCD projectors, document cameras, iPads and more. The school currently has one cart with 30 iPads that teachers share. Frank Jones, curriculum specialist, who has spearheaded the event for the last four years, said they are hoping to raise enough money at the garage sale to purchase another one. “The iPads are interactive and help to keep the students engaged,” said Jones. “They also allow the teachers to differentiate their instruction for kids at different levels.” The City of Pembroke Pines Charter West Middle School is located at 18500 Pembroke Road. For information, call 954-443-4847.

Pines Lakes Students Participate in Anti-Bullying Program By Debby Teich

A

t Pines L akes E lementary School , students are hearing the

message loud and clear that bullying will not be tolerated. Through a partnership with Park’s Martial Arts, the entire school recently participated in an anti-bullying program. Students worked on confidence-building skills, as well as techniques to help them verbally diffuse confrontations. “Early instruction with our partners, Park’s Martial Arts, as well as the support from our teachers, has made this program a success,” said Principal Susan Sasse. “Our statistics show a drastic decrease in the number of students who are referred to the office for behavior infractions. Now the students come to the office to see the Principal & Assistant Principal and show off their martial arts belts!” Instructors from Park’s Martial Arts have been teaching the program in schools for more than ten years. Owner Master Shick Park says that he remembers being bullied as a kid. His father taught him how to fight back without using physical force and now he is passing on those same skills to the students. “Bullying is a major epidemic in our country,” said Park. “We teach the students how to effectively walk away from a bullying situation without using their hands or feet.” Every student in grades kindergarten to 5th participated in a four-day program

held during PE class. They received anti-bullying belts and were rewarded with stripes each time they completed the daily homework assignments. The program uses the core values of martial arts – self-control, discipline and respect. Students start by taking a Peace Pledge, or commitment not to be bullied. They also promise to help classmates who are bullied and seek help from an adult. In each of the four lessons, students learn how to diffuse potential conflicts and role play with the instructors to practice the techniques. In the Anger Guard lesson, students identify their “hot buttons,” so they can learn to control their tempers and react to a bully without getting angry. In Word Block, they learn to use certain words and phrases to verbally defend themselves. During the Mushin lesson, students practice their “show time” face. They learn how to remain cool, level-headed, and ready to respond without getting angry. Lastly, they learn that one of the best ways to avoid being bullied is to be kind to their classmates and bullies. Eric Saranik, PE teacher, says he has already seen the positive effects of the class. “The kids have started changing their attitudes,” said Saranik. “They have been kinder to each other and to adults. So often, bullies are kids who have been bullied. It is great that we are able to start teaching the kids about bullying at such a young age to help break the cycle.”

PPCHS Jaguars Play First Football Game on New Field By Debby Teich

A

fter 12 seasons of playing their “ home” football

games at Flanagan High School, the Pembroke Pines Charter High School Jaguars finally had an opportunity to experience the feeling of playing on their own turf. PPCHS unveiled its new stateof-the-art on-campus stadium during a preseason football game against Somerset Charter Academy. The City of Pembroke Pines awarded Fort Lauderdale’s Recreational Design & Construction the contract to build the facility, which includes an artificial turf field, a rubberized four-lane track, a concession stand, new bleachers, restrooms, and a ticket booth. In addition to football, it will also be used for soccer, lacrosse and other sports. For the opening game, the stadium was packed with cheering students, teachers, faculty, alumni, city officials and other fans. The school band played, as Mayor Frank C. Ortis and City Commissioners Angelo Castillo and Iris Siple cut the official ribbon. A crew of reporters, videographers and photographers from the PPCHS C.H.A.T. newspaper staff was also in attendance. In August and September, many of the feature stories in the digital publication were dedicated to the football team and stadium opening. “It was so exciting to be there,” said Joshua Alleman, editor-in-chief of the newspaper. “We interviewed the Mayor, alumni football players and many others. We were just a few feet away from the ribbon cutting. It was the biggest event I have ever covered.”

t is widely accepted that driving under the

influence of alcohol poses a serious danger to the impaired driver and other motorists on the road. However, a recent study from the University of Minnesota found that talking on a cell phone while driving impairs one’s ability even more than driving while intoxicated. Talking on a cell phone and other driver distractions pose a major hazard to everyone on the road!

Decreasing Distractions

While there is little that you can do to control other people’s driving, there is plenty that you can do to reduce the distractions in your own vehicle. To minimize risks while driving: ▸▸ Do not talk on your cell phone or use the text messaging feature. If you absolutely must conduct a conversation, do so using a hands-free device and speed dial. ▸▸ Never touch up your makeup or hair in the rearview mirror. You’ll look the same once you get to your destination, as you do while your foot is on the gas.

▸▸ Do not smoke while you are driving, as you will probably pay more attention to not burning yourself, putting out the cigarette or inhaling than driving safely. ▸▸ Only adjust the radio or CD player when you are completely stopped. ▸▸ Never allow animals to sit on your lap while driving. ▸▸ Do not eat or drink while driving. ▸▸ Avoid reading maps or directions. Instead, pull into a parking lot to get your bearings and determine where you need to go next to reach your final destination. ▸▸ Do not take notes or search for phone numbers. ▸▸ Never use a cell phone (even with a hands-free device) in bad weather, work zones or heavy traffic.

Cosmetic surgeons will change the name of a straightforward procedure in an attempt to lure an uneducated patient into thinking that “their” procedure is somehow “better” than what has been done thousands of times before by well-qualified plastic surgeons. As the skin ages, there is a progressive loss of collagen, which results in increased skin laxity. This skin change, coupled with loss of the underlying soft tissue volume, results in prominent nasolabial folds, jowls, and neck bands. In order to improve the appearance of the face and neck, a skin tightening procedure should be performed. Before

This can be accomplished by lifting and removing excess skin, via skin resurfacing procedure with laser or chemical peel, or restoring loss of soft tissue volume with fat or synthetic fillers. These techniques will vary depending on each person’s individual facial anatomy and appearance goals. During face lifting procedures, the facial skin is elevated, the underlying muscle [SMAS] is tightened and the excess skin is removed. When the skin laxity is limited to the cheek area, a mini-facelift can be performed—scar is limited to the area in the front of the ear. If neck skin laxity and neck bands are present, additional incisions can be made behind the ear and under the chin. This technique is referred to as a full facelift, or face and neck lift. The Lifestyle lift and S-Lift have similar incisions with limited underlying or elevation of the face and neck skin. If there is sagging of the eyebrow, then a browlift or forehead lift is performed. The aging appearance of the upper and lower eyelids is treated with a blepharoplasty and is a separate procedure. A facelift can be performed in combination with soft tissue volume addition by fat transfer, skin smoothing with a chemical peel or laser resurfacing under local anesthesia, intravenous sedation or general anesthesia depending on the patient’s medical history and comfort level. The most important factors to consider when making a decision to have elective cosmetic surgery are the surgeon, the facility, and the anesthesia provider. Only have facial plastic surgery by a surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery or the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstruction Surgery in an accredited outpatient facility or hospital. Anesthesia should be administered by a licensed, board certified anesthesiologist or certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA). Facial rejuvenation surgery can be performed safely and effectively under the correct circumstances. Don’t get caught up in the marketing tactics of “cosmetic” doctors who may not have the credentials or experience to perform injections or surgical procedures they advertise. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and consultant for Allergan Medical and has achieved Black Diamond Level as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Don’t Try a Do-It-Yourself Foreclosure Defense By Omar J. Arcia, Esq. · Foreclosure Defense and Consumer Bankruptcy Protection Attorney

W

e have counseled hundreds of clients through the years ,

and the most significant mistake that homeowners make when faced with a foreclosure case is to wait until the last minute to contact a knowledgeable and experienced attorney. Many homeowners think that just like fixing a leaky faucet at home, they can easily defend themselves in a foreclosure proceeding and save their home. Here are several important reasons why you should not try a do-it-yourself foreclosure defense. Florida’s new speedy foreclosure law (House Bill 87) makes it far easier for lenders to get families out of their homes. Under the new Florida law, the burden has now been placed on homeowners to prove that the bank does not have the right to foreclose, instead of the bank being required to prove that they are entitled to a foreclosure. Homeowners will have about 20 days to organize their evidence and present that proof to the court, whereas before they had months or years to develop their case against the lender. Some of the legal defenses to a foreclosure are highly technical, constantly changing, and require specialized knowledge. Homeowners are not equipped to tackle the challenges presented by Florida’s speedy foreclosure law without the guidance of an attorney. Florida leads the nation not only in completed foreclosures from April 2012 to March 2013 (according to CoreLogic), but also has the largest backlog of foreclosure cases. The district courts are doing everything in their power to “flush” foreclosure cases out of the court system as quickly as possible. The “rocket docket” system, implemented in many jurisdictions to dispose of hundreds of foreclosure cases daily, is just one means of accomplishing this goal. Courts are also randomly setting cases for trial that are simply not legally ready for trial, or not “at issue.” Unsuspecting homeowners that are unprepared to defend their case, or that fail to seek a timely continuance of trial, find themselves forced to accept a final judgment of foreclosure, with an auction sale date 30-60 days later. Preparation is the most important step you can take right now. Your timeframe to save your home has been SHORTENED by our legislature. Organize all your closing documents, every bank statement, every payment, every communication you’ve had with the bank, and contact experienced attorneys like those at The Arcia Law Firm. This way you will be able to know what lies ahead, so you can work with your attorney and ensure that you are defended quickly and properly. The Arcia Law Firm is privileged to successfully represent many homeowners in our community with mortgage fraud, foreclosure defense and bankruptcy cases. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, if you are in the middle of a frustrating loan modification process, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, don’t try a do-it-yourself foreclosure defense Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners are also discussed in a new DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a complimentary copy during your free consultation to discuss your case in detail with a member of our highly experienced and determined legal team. Contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free consultation, or visit www.fight4yourhome.com to schedule your appointment online.

Breast Cancer Care at Its Best One in eight women will get breast cancer. The good news is that the death rate from breast cancer has dropped about 2 percent per year since 1990, thanks to earlier detection, new treatments and a better understanding of the disease. Our unique approach to breast cancer is born out of the belief that women should play an active role in their healthcare by asking questions, discussing treatment alternatives and working with their healthcare team to determine their best options. Breast Cancer Epidemiology A gene can develop an abnormality that changes how the cell works. The most common causes of hereditary breast cancer include mutations in the BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 gene. There are other hereditary causes of breast cancer, but these are the most prevalent. These genes can be inherited from either parent. At Cleveland Clinic Florida, highrisk women can be tested to screen for mutations in the BRCA genes. However, genetic testing is done only when definitely indicated by a personal or a strong family history. Genetic testing might also be used to determine if a woman who has already been diagnosed with breast cancer is at an increased risk for a breast cancer reoccurrence or ovarian cancer. Breast Cancer Treatment Options Recognized for its state-of-the-art treatment capabilities, Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Breast Center has earned a three-year/full accreditation designation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) by the American College of Surgeons. A range of treatment options is available to patients who have been diagnosed with breast cancer: surgery, radiation, hormone therapy, chemotherapy, and clinical trials, to name a few. Cleveland Clinic’s team of breast care specialists will help to determine the best treatment plan based on type of breast cancer, size and location of the tumor, disease stage, lab test results, and a patient’s overall health. Women’s Imaging Center Cleveland Clinic Florida’s accredited Women’s Imaging Center provides state-of-the-art screening in a soothing environment. The Center makes early and accurate detection a priority, offering digital mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MRI and breast CAD (computer aided detection). Both Weston and West Palm Beach locations have been designated Breast Imaging Centers of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR). The Centers are part of an elite group in Florida to achieve this level of excellence. Only three percent of the state’s nearly 500 ACR-accredited centers are recognized as breast imaging centers of excellence. Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Multidisciplinary Team Our team includes fellowship trained breast surgeons, oncologists, plastic surgeons, radiologists, and pathologists, as well as nurses and a Breast Navigator who work collaboratively to treat patients with breast cancer. At Cleveland Clinic Florida, our breast cancer team is dedicated to providing patients with advanced treatment options. Our physicians provide a personalized treatment plan and explore

options to improve your chances of a successful outcome. This multidisciplinary approach provides the best possible quality of life. Pioneers in Breast Reconstruction Techniques Cleveland Clinic Florida’s plastic surgeons pioneered the Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator Flap procedure (DIEP flap), to provide patients with innovative reconstruction options Cassann Blake, MD after a mastectomy. They are also Cleveland Clinic Florida, Breast Surgeon the first in the world to use laser assisted angiography to determine if there is enough healthy tissue to proceed with reconstruction immediately after a mastectomy. This revolutionary breakthrough reduces complications. Research & Clinical Trials Clinical research has been fundamental to the mission of Cleveland Clinic since its establishment. Our robust research program is designed to provide patients with the most up-to-date treatment options. Cleveland Clinic Florida’s comprehensive approach to cancer diagnosis, treatment, and recovery means that patients receive support and guidance from a dedicated team of experts. Family law

his year , a strange event will take place . The

first day of Hanukkah is Thursday, November 28th. If this date sounds a bit familiar, it is because it is also Thanksgiving. So for those who celebrate these two holidays, it will be a double celebration. Turkey and latkes anyone? Now as a family law attorney, my thoughts went in a different direction when I became aware of this rare occurrence. I am sure that there are several divorced couples who have a time sharing schedule in place which grants one parent time with the children on Thanksgiving and the other parent time on Hanukkah. Now when family law attorneys draft an Agreement, they try and anticipate every possible situation, so that future litigation can be avoided. I can, however, assure you that this would not have been a situation which would have been anticipated. You may be wondering, “How do they resolve this obvious conflict in scheduling?” I don’t know that I have an absolute answer to this situation. Sound logic would suggest that since Hanukkah is eight days and Thanksgiving is only one, the one day holiday should take precedence. Unfortunately, sound logic does not always prevail. The hope is that two mature parents can resolve it between themselves and avoid any unnecessary conflict. Of course, that is also not always the case. Today, when couples who have minor children divorce, they enter into a Parenting Plan. This document clearly spells out the time sharing arrangement as well as the responsibilities of both parents. Holidays are generally equally divided based upon odd or even years. As an example, Mom may have Thanksgiving in even years and Dad in odd numbered years. The same division applies for most of the major holidays. Winter break, which includes Christmas and New Years, generally gets divided in half, with Christmas Day being the day of exchange. This allows both parents time with the children, either Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. Of course, some parents would rather have Christmas Eve every year and if the other parent does not object, it usually can be worked out. This, however, does prevent a parent from travelling out of town for the Christmas vacation and therefore some parents would rather alternate from year to year. This schedule is included in the Parenting Plan. If no changes are made by agreement, it will be the schedule to be followed, until there are no more minor children A judge recently told a client of mine that the Parenting Plan should just be a guide and should not be without some flexibility. Parents, who can assist each other along the way, will have happier and healthier children. FOR SALE BY OWNER: Attempting to Sell Your Home All By Yourself.... By Patrick Simm

A

Florida House of Representatives Representative Richard Stark

s S ellers continue to hold the advantage in

the current real estate market, For Sale by Owners (FSBOs) are slowly becoming more and more prevalent. Admittedly, some people are able to sell homes on their own, without the services of a Real Estate professional. These FSBOs gain exposure by placing For Sale by Owner signs strategically within the area. However, more times than not, code enforcement officers from the City remove the signs within hours of their placement. Many also elect to gain additional exposure by paying a considerable amount for classified advertising in the local newspaper.

The biggest mistake made by the majority of FSBOs is that they tend to overprice their homes at the onset. Like most homeowners, most FSBOs honestly believe their home is worth more than comparable homes in the same neighborhood. Many of the successful FSBO’s are experienced home sellers, while others, who try unsuccessfully, ultimately come to realize that it takes more than placing a sign in the front yard. The ultimate and, if I may say, the only reason why FSBOs try to sell their home themselves is to save on the commission. Assuredly, FSBOs don’t take on the task for the emotional drain that selling a home can bring or for the fondness of the complexity of the transaction from executing the Contract to the eventual closing. For most home sellers, trying to sell a home as a FSBO is not an option. They realize that they are not real estate experts and simply do not have the time and effort it takes in the preparation and the logistics required in selling a home. The power of selling one’s home lies in pricing it correctly from the onset. The Multiple Listing Service (MLS) is the second most important (marketing) aspect of selling a home. FSBOs aren’t allowed to list their home on the MLS; only real estate brokers and agents are allowed. FSBOs are also locked out of many real estate search engines and websites that are syndicated through the MLS. The major one, amongst others, is Realtor.com. In closing, the main reason why many don’t elect to sell as a FSBO is the liability that is involved in the sale of a home. A minority of FSBOs are likely to stumble into legal trouble at some point during the sale. Real Estate transactions are often filled with potential liability for unwary sellers, especially in the state of Florida, which has extensive disclosure requirements. A FSBO who overlooks even one required form or legally mandated disclosure could face a lingering and expensive lawsuit from the buyer long after the transaction closes. The truth of the matter is that FSBO’s aren’t the true professionals of the real estate industry and are not knowledgeable as to the ever changing Contract and disclosure laws in real estate. With all that is stacked against them, many choose to take the calculated risk for the monetary savings earned from not having to pay the real estate commission. Growing Pains in Children or Merely “Flat Feet”? By Robert H. Sheinberg, D.P.M., D.A.B.P.S., F.A.C.F.A.S.

oot, ankle and leg problems in the growing

child are often considered to be “Growing Pains” in the bone and muscles of the lower extremity. While in a small number of cases this might be true, in a majority of the cases the pains that plague these children and teenagers may be caused by lower extremity malalignment problems. Growing pains are often seen in children who are excessively flatfooted or whose feet point to the outside. Children may also appear very knock-kneed. Tight calf muscles can not only cause but significantly aggravate the pain that these children are experiencing, especially at night. Leg pain is most commonly felt during activity. It is also felt at night after a long day of activity. Pain with activities, especially along the inside of the knee, lower leg, ankle and foot, may also be felt. This is often associated with a general avoidance of activities and sports and premature fatigue with many activities. Many children can also develop lower back pain. Children that are sedentary, may become overweight.

Treatment is important early on. Changing a child’s shoe gear to add more support to the foot and ankle may provide immediate help. Custom molded orthotics (shoe inserts) will immediately help to realign the foot and the entire lower extremity. This will almost overnight lessen or eliminate the problem. Physical therapy may also help to decrease overall muscle tightness and to improve muscle strength and coordination. If the foot is flat and associated with tight calf muscles, stretching the calf muscles in a walking cast may be necessary to not only eliminate the problem but to prevent a recurrence. An excellent prognosis is always seen when the cause is identified and the problem treated. We have seen and treated more than a thousand of these children with this problem with excellent long-term success. Ask the mayor

Pembroke Pines Update By Mayor Frank C. Ortis

L

ast month , I hosted a breakfast for Pembroke

Pines school principals for the charter schools and district schools in Pembroke Pines. I was gratified to find a wonderful group of extremely talented people who are leaders in their schools. They are leaders who manage the day-to-day running of the places where our children must attend every day to learn, study, and meet high academic goals for college and careers. Our community is extremely lucky to have this talented pool of people who are involved in the education of our

children. The leadership of the principals, teachers and staff is at the very top of the scale. To enhance education, we as a state and as a community have to demand that the finances are where they need to be to provide free education for our children. Capital and operational needs are essential to providing the day-to-day running of a safe and pleasant environment. Some might argue that monies are wasted in school districts, but if that is true there has to be accountability. When I visit the learning institutions in our city, I see dedicated staff everyday maintaining the balance of teaching academic essentials with whatever tools they have. In my opinion, the tools are just not sufficient and our teachers need all the help our community can muster. Let’s all pull together to strengthen our educational system.

Lovely (a.k.a. Babylove) is a six-year old domestic short hair tuxedo cat. His favorite people are his dad Carlos and stepmom Theresa. His favorite toy is a laser pointer. He likes to watch television and sleep. He dislikes it when cellphones ring. His favorite thing to do is to pose for pictures. He was last seen on top of the roof.

Kids Toothbrush Club Helps Children Create Good Brushing Habits By Debby Teich

G

Describe the sticker sheet.

etting children to brush their teeth

often presents a challenge. The Kids Toothbrush Club is a monthly subscription club for children that includes a fresh, new toothbrush along with a fun kit designed to provide hours of motivational and educational activities. It uses rewards and positive reinforcement to help children build a lifelong routine of good oral health habits.

The sticker sheet provides 120 star stickers for daily use when brushing. Also included are multiple large stickers for your child to note special occasions and accomplishments. For example, there are stickers for a Happy Birthday, a New Tooth and an A+ day.

Claire Cohen, founder and president, answered some commonly asked questions about the Kids Toothbrush Club.

Why is it important for children to brush regularly? Children should brush regularly and

change their toothbrush monthly to prevent the spread of bacteria and germs and get the best cleaning possible to prevent plaque, tarter and cavities. A healthy smile is the foundation for a healthy body and mind.

How did the Club get started? The Kids Toothbrush Club started out of a mission to help raise funds and dental hygiene awareness for children in lower economic areas. Although these children need many of the basic essentials in life, toothbrushes are often overlooked in their daily necessities. Since we believe that every child deserves a healthy smile, with each Kids Toothbrush Club membership we provide toothbrushes free of charge for children in need. This helps teach all kids the rewards of giving back. Kids helping kids - now that’s something to smile about!

What role do Jake and Judy play? Jake and

Claire helps a child unwrap a new toothbrush.

Toothbrush Club kit, a child creates daily habits with a fun kit that includes motivational charts, stickers and activity books.

Describe your own personal success with a reward system. I (Claire) have been teach-

ing grades three through college level for 33 years. As a mother of two children, I found that the use of positive reinforcement and rewarding good behaviors with my children and students works best to motivate and build good habits. Kids love to be rewarded for good behavior and those behaviors become part of their daily routines. The routines learned as a kid become lifelong healthy habits.

Judy are fun toothbrush characters that chil12-month Kit dren can associate with. We have Jake and Judy playing sports, eating healthy foods, and other activities therefore encouraging good physically fitness in addition to good oral hygiene and overall good health. When children receive their monthly fun kits, they look forward to coloring and reading about Jake and Judy’s adventures.

How do you reach out to kids in need? We visit schools and daycare centers and provide much needed dental supplies and education. For information, visit www.KidsToothbrushClub.com or send an email to Claire@kidstoothbrushclub.com. Or visit the following social media sites: Facebook – www.facebook.com/kidstoothbrushclub; Twitter – www.twitter.com/kids_toothbrush; Pinterest - http:// pinterest.com/kidstoothbrush and YouTube - http://www.youtube. com/KidsToothbrushClub.

What is included in the monthly kit?

Children receive a monthly shipment that includes a fresh, new toothbrush along with a fun coloring activity booklet, plus a calendar and stickers.

Claire shows a child some of the fun activities that are included in a kit.

What ages is the Club for? Kids Toothbrush

Club fun kits are appropriate for children ages 2 and up. They are available in two age ranges appropriate for children ages toddler to four and for ages five and up. Parents can also add an adult toothbrush to the child’s kit each month to receive a fresh, new toothbrush, so that they can be great role models for their children. Shipping is always FREE on each Kids Toothbrush Club fun kit.

Why is the Club effective? Parents and

teachers know the best way to motivate a child is through a reward system. By using the Kids

Describe the monthly activity coloring book. The monthly activity coloring book pro-

vides challenging activities meant for developing critical thinking skills, motor skills, visual awareness, vocabulary skills, and spelling skills all that support healthy oral hygiene. A Jake and Judy toothbrush and their dog Max are featured each month.

How does the themed calendar work? The

themed calendar allows you and your child to monitor their daily brushing. Your child is rewarded with a star sticker to place on the calendar each time he brushes his teeth. The calendar also reinforces counting skills, tracking skills, and develops a sense of accomplishment.
