6 Deadly Heart Conditions Knowing the Signs of Heart Disease Can Save Your Life By Mammen P. Zachariah, M.D. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. With the heart, immediate treatment can lessen the damage and having access to a specialized cardiac team is crucial. See a doctor if you have these symptoms:
• Feelings of indigestion or heartburn, any discomfort, pressure, aching, burning, or squeezing or chest pain • Shortness of breath • Palpitations – irregular heartbeats or a “flip-flop” feeling in your chest • An elevated heartbeat • Weakness or dizziness, nausea or sweating
• Pain in the shoulders, arms, neck, throat, jaw or back
If any of the above symptoms last five minutes or longer call 911 immediately.
5 Other Heart Conditions to Watch:
Heart Failure: occurs when the heart isn’t pumping as strongly as it should. Symptoms include shortness of breath and swelling. M6756_BHC_CardiacAdvertorial_OurCity_8.5x5.indd 1
Arrhythmia: occurs when the heart beats out of rhythm. If untreated, arrhythmia can lead to stroke, heart failure or cardiac arrest.
Coronary Artery Disease: occurs when not enough oxygen rich blood is delivered to the heart. Symptoms can vary and many experience no symptoms. Cardiomyopathy: reduces the heart muscle’s ability to pump blood. Symptoms include irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath, exhaustion, ankle and legs swelling or fainting.
Heart Valve Disease: occurs when one or more of the valves doesn’t work properly. Symptoms include unusual heartbeat, fatigue, shortness of breath and swelling of the lower extremities.
A multidisciplinary approach in cardiac care is key. For more information, visit BrowardHealth.org/CardiacCare or call 954.759.7500.

Black History is American History
F
ebruary is Black History Month. The annual observance is celebrated in the United States, Canada, and the UK. In the U.S., school students learn about the contributions people of African descent have made to our county, communities, and the world. Many public observances are held across the country, and a renewed focus is made on the continuing struggles African Americans face. Before Black History Month was a nationally recognized observance, “Negro History Week” was created in 1926 by historian Carter G. Woodson. He chose the second week of February for its observance because that week typically includes the birthdays of Frederick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln. He wanted to encourage the teaching of Black History in schools. At that time, there was frequently little to no inclusion of the contributions and plight of African Americans in history classes. In the 1970s Negro History Week became Black History Month and is celebrated across the country. It is more important now than ever to remember the severe sacrifices African Americans have made. We must all remember historian George Santayana’s famous quip, “Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” Remembering the worst of our past, as well as, the best, will help us all continue to become better versions of ourselves. Sincerely,
Christy & Terry Jaillet

LEGALLY SPEAKING
How to Select an Estate Planning Attorney By Bruce Iden, Esquire
F
inding an estate planning attorney can be overwhelming. Here are some pointers to help you make the right choice. Qualifications. It is fair to question an attorney as to how they developed their estate planning expertise. Often attorneys who are transitioning from other practice areas may present themselves as an estate planning attorney although they have little actual training or experience. Ask how many trusts have they drafted. Do they hold any advanced degrees? To which professional associations do they belong? Keep in mind that it is impossible to be an expert in all areas of the law. Attorney’s Fees. Price is always an important factor. However, making your selection solely on price may not be wise. In setting fees, a reputable attorney will consider the amount of time that they will need to invest and the complexity of the plan. Once they know what needs to be done, they can quote a fee. Customized Documents. A high-quality estate plan should be custom drafted to fit your individual and family needs. Be suspicious of firms who quote flat fees over the phone for anything more than a simple will, or who advertise low prices for trusts. This often means the attorney does not draft custom documents but rather uses the same boilerplate document for each client and simply fills in the blanks. That is not planning, it’s word processing. The Process. During your planning meeting, your attorney should spend several hours with you and your spouse gathering detailed information about you and your loved ones, including your hopes and fears. Whether you are single, divorced, widowed, married, or have a blended family, the planning process should also include a lot of interactive questions intended to help formulate your unique plan. Additional Services. Be sure to ascertain exactly which services your attorney provides and whether there are additional costs for: trust funding (changing title and/or ownership to your trust), answering questions and telephone conversations with you or your financial advisors, reviewing and explaining your estate plan with your successor trustees and with your family in the event of your disability or death, future modifications to your estate plan, and recording and filing fees. Success. A successful estate plan establishes clear instructions for your successors and trustees as to what they should do to achieve your objectives. Your attorney should work with your team of professionals ( financial planners, accountants, life insurance advisors), to advise and assist you and your successors. Be sure to look for an estate planning attorney with whom you and your spouse feel comfortable and at ease. Planning is not a transaction, it is a lifelong exercise. Chemistry is important, as is competence and shared values. Do your research. Ask questions. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?

or the 26th consecutive year Weston has attained the highest municipal credit rating of Aaa from the credit rating bureau Moody's Investor Service. The agency reaffirmed the City of Weston Aaa issuer credit rating at the end of 2021.
Investors in municipal bonds use credit ratings to assess creditworthiness, or the ability and willingness of the state or local government issuing the bond to pay investors their money back, plus interest. Bond ratins are roughly analogous to consumer credit scores and are used by lenders in the same way. Attaining a Triple-A rating ensures the City of Weston’s ability to borrow and to borrow at the lowest possible costs relative to other municipalities.
Only 7% of the 16,255 municipal bond issuers that Moody’s evaluated received its highest Triple-A rating. The agency’s review of Weston noted “Weston's credit position is excellent and its Aaa rating is much stronger than the median rating of Aa3 for US cities. Notable credit factors include a substantial tax base, a very strong resident wealth and income profile, a robust financial position, and exceptionally low debt and pension liabilities.” Moody’s rating system for local governments analyzes 13 different criteria in four categories: Economy/tax base, finances, management, and debt/pension liabilities. Generally speaking, the reaffirmed rating indicates that Weston’s financial management practices are extremely sound and that the city would be able to borrow at the lowest possible rates and best terms available to American cities. more information about Weston's finances, visit: ▸ For www.westonfl.org/government/finance

Raise Your Right Paw and Bark After Me BSOs Newest Member Sworn In
B
SO Weston District's newest dedicated member raised her right paw to be sworn in... Olivia is a K-9 Therapy dog and is partnered with Deputy Danielle Quinones. The pair are making a PAWsitive impact on our community. Olivia was officially welcomed into the BSO family on Tuesday, December 14 at a ceremony at Weston City Hall at 9:00 a.m. which included remarks from City Manager Don Decker, Mayor Margaret Brown and an official welcome from Undersheriff Nicole Anderson. Olivia now has a badge just like any other deputy. K-9 Olivia, a three year old Labrador Retriever, originally came through the Brevard County Sheriff's Office Paws and Stripes program. There they select dogs from the local Animal Shelter that they feel would make good therapy K-9s. Olivia and Deputy Quinones went through training and graduated from the Paws and Stripes College. So Olivia is literally a rescue story of great proportions. She was rescued and now she helps others.
By Jon Duka
A Therapy Dog is a great asset for a community in many ways. What immediately strikes you is that a friendly dog knocks away the barrier of hesitancy to approach or engage a police officer. People forget they had any fear and go straight toward the dog. The dog helps her handler build a rapport with community members. Olivia assists Danielle in community outreach including visiting our senior facilities, City events, and the 15 public, private and parochial schools within our City boundaries. Therapy dogs provide relief to those in anxiety-provoking situations, bring comfort to those who are grieving or lonely, and offer affection to individuals who are in institutions such as hospitals, nursing homes, and schools. Lastly, therapy dogs assist victims of crimes, abuse and trauma. According to Deputy Quinones, one of her favorite visits is to 'Seniors and Snuggles,' a program for the independent and assisted living facilities. She said "you can just see the light come back into their eyes when they see Olivia". With all that Olivia and

Deputy Quinones do, they also provide stress relief for our first responders at the station. Dogs bring a smile to everyone's face.
Paws and Stripes Program
The Paws and Stripes College carefully selects and trains rescued dogs. Inmates are paired with shelter dogs and help train the dogs in both voice commands and hand signals. The dogs were housebroken, and learned basic obedience skills to include, heel, sit, down, stay, and come, all with the anticipation of getting the dog adopted into its Fur-ever home. The Paws & Stripes® program has advanced into the “Paws and Stripes® College” and offers the basic tenants of the original program (now called the Comfort Dog Program) while serving as the foundation for the “College”. Selected canine graduates of the original 8 week course now move into the advanced training program to serve as Law Enforcement & Multidiscipline Crimes Against Children Therapy Dogs.

HOW MUCH DO YOU REALLY NEED FOR
YOUR DOWN PAYMENT?
A
By Helena Grossberg
s you set out on your home buying journey, you likely have a plan in place, and you are working on saving for your purchase. But do you know how much you actually need for your down payment? If you think you have to put 20% down, you may have set your goal based on a common misconception. Freddie Mac says: “The most damaging down payment myth—since it stops the homebuying process before it can start—is the belief that 20% is necessary.” Unless specified by your loan type or lender, it’s typically not required to put 20% down. According to the Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers from the National Association of Realtors (NAR), the median down payment hasn’t been over 20% since 2005. It may sound surprising, but today, that number is only 13%. And it’s even lower for first-time homebuyers, whose median down payment is only 7% (see graph below):
What Does This Mean For You?
While a down payment of 20% or more does have benefits, the typical buyer is putting down far less. That’s good news for you because it means you could be closer to your homebuying dream than you realize. If you are interested in learning more about low down payment options, there are several places to go. There are programs for qualified buyers with down payments as low as 3.5%. There are also options like VA loans and USDA loans with no down payment requirements for qualified applicants. To understand your options, you need to do your homework. If you are interested in learning more about down payment assistance programs, information is available through sites like downpaymentresource. com. Be sure to also work with a trusted real estate advisor from the start to learn what you may qualify for in the homebuying process.

This money will purchase mobile pumps that can be transported into flooded areas, construct a pump station in Pembroke Pines, and improve the potable water quality and drainage systems in Southwest Ranches. This coming session, I am requesting money from the Florida Legislature to improve the drainage systems in Weston and Southwest Ranches. I have filed an appropriation to repair the stormwater pump station in Weston which will keep roads open to emergency service vehicles before and after a storm. I am also working with the Town of Southwest Ranches on several projects. One project will install a drainage system into Ivanhoe Canal so that surrounding communities are hardened for storms. I am also proposing legislation to address the Central and Southern Florida (C&SF) Project. The C&SF Project consists of nearly 2,600 miles of canals, numerous levees, and water control structures which provide flood protection for the South Florida region. It was designed over 70 years ago to serve an anticipated 2 million residents. Today, the C&SF Project now protects more than 11 million Floridians and over $359 billion of Florida’s economy in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties alone. Recently, the C&SF Project has been challenged by sea level rise and more intense rainfall; parts of the system require immediate upgrades to protect our region. In 2009, the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) determined that 18 flood control structures of the C&SF Project were within six inches of design failure. 42 / Our City Weston / February 2022
South Florida has always been my home and we must take decisive action to protect our community for future generations. The successful operation of our flood control system is critical to daily life in South Florida. Florida needs to adapt to rising sea levels and enhance flood protection to preserve the region for our growing population and to maintain one-third of Florida’s economy. I am eager to hear your feedback on these bills and any other legislation you would like for me to introduce in the future. Learn about our legislation to improve Florida’s health care system, support our police, firefighters, and teachers, and expand tenant’s rights by visiting MyFloridaHouse.gov and clicking “Sponsored Bills” under my profile. or over three decades, the Southeast Florida Scottish Festival and Highland Games has become well-known around the country for its high-quality organization and featured entertainment celebrating Scottish Culture and Heritage. Once again, the anticipated 38th annual event will be held on March 5th at Plantation Heritage Park. The centrally located premier venue will be transformed into an exciting exhibition of Scottish culture. The Scottish Festival is a very colorful cultural event, and highlights include a wide variety of Scottish heritage activities such as international entertainers, massed bagpipe bands, heavy athletics, Scottish country dancing, Highland dancing, Scottish clans and societies, fiddling, piping, and drumming competitions, children’s games, sheepherding, Scottish food, drink, and merchandise. This is coupled with a Highland Games which comprises competitions in bagpiping, drumming, and heavy athletics with participation by people of all ages, ethnicities, and sexes and is not restricted to those of Scottish heritage. Additionally, an area of children’s activities will immerse young lads in Scottish culture through dress-up, coloring, child-appropriate athletics, and a passport game that guides them around the heritage displays. This year the impressive lineup of live music performances features Piper Jones Band, Dunedin City Pipe Band (Grade 2 winners at 2018 World Pipe Band Championship held in Scotland), and Mudmen from Canada. Hours are 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM., rain or shine, no refunds. Admittance is $15 at ticket outlets in advance & online and $20 at the gate. Children 6-14, $3. Under 6 free. CYPRESS BAY BAND IS PROUD TO TOOT THEIR OWN HORN By Beverly Perkins
I
t has been a trying time especially with a quiet one-year interruption, but Cypress Bay High School’s (CBHS) music program has had a successful start to the school year. The “Sound of Thunder” has been making plenty of noise this fall as they marched their way into the top 10 at the Florida Marching Bands Championships (FMBC) in Ocala, performed in a two-night winter showcase, and mentored their younger neighborhood middle school students. “The success of a marching season relies on many factors, but one critical ingredient is the student body! Usually, seniors and juniors are leading by experience. Sophomores can rely on one past season, and freshmen are the ones who must learn everything. So, beginners are usually 1/4 of the band. With the COVID19 interruption, our beginners were sophomores and freshmen and counted for almost 50% of our marching band this year! So that was one big challenge, added to the fact that the summer was rainier than usual, and many
rehearsals had to happen indoors, focusing on music only rather than choreography drills,” explained Stephanie Bescherelle, Sound of the Thunder Parent & CBBPA President. This year the program has 130 registered students with 79 who participated in marching season (May-November). Cypress Bay offers three levels of Concert Band (one jazz band, one percussion ensemble, and one color guard ensemble). Marching band is an afterschool addition to these classes which is open to all band members and color guard students. But besides all the accolades and competitions, playing at all the home football games will always remain a highlight. Despite all the difficulties, making it to the FMBC Finals in Ocala and placing 9th out of 17 bands in the same size category was quite an accomplishment. CBHS students worked long hours, developed resilience, and forged lifelong friendships and memories preparing for the competition at the World Equestrian Center. As one knows, it takes a village to get so far; the 10 coaches/marching instructors collaborated with CBHS Band Director Brett Dawson and dedicated themselves to making sure the beginners would reach the required performance levels. Student leaders went above and beyond to keep the group together while relaying all the necessary information. Parents were behind the scenes making sure costumes, props, food, and fundraising were

above par, and the school administration gave some extra love and support. After Thanksgiving, the “Sound of Thunder” switched to its “Concert & Jazz” season. Their Winter Extravaganza concert filled the school auditorium with two nights of live music which included the entire CBHS chorus. More concerts and competitions are scheduled in the upcoming months such as Winter Color Guard and Solo and Ensemble, Jazz Band, and Concert Band Music Performance Assessments (MPA). Although these students have an incredibly busy schedule between academics and practice, they still find time to mentor 8th- grade students at Tequesta Trace and Falcon Cove Middle Schools every week. "Ensuring good communication between the local school programs is key to reaching a high level of benefits for all band and guard students along their artistic journey,” added Bescherelle. "I am really proud of the Cypress Bay Band students so far this year. They have worked very hard and done a great job performing in real performing ensembles such as marching band, concert band, jazz band, and guard. With half of the Marching Band members never having marched before this year and no one marching for the past two years, their accomplishments this season were tremendous,” exclaimed CBHS Band Director Brett Dawson.

FALCON COVE NJHS SPREADS LOVE...
NOT GERMS BY BEVERLY PERKINS
“The opportunity to put a smile on a child’s face is the greatest gift one could ever ask for. You’re not only helping those who aren’t as fortunate as you, but you get the chance to experience life from a different perspective, and that’s truly a blessing,” said NJHS member Ana Romero Aguirre.
O
ne of the requirements of our local middle and high schools is for students to not only earn good grades but also community service hours. However, the ongoing pandemic has made this extremely difficult for those students looking to make a difference in someone else’s life while enriching their own. Fortunately, Falcon Cove National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) discovered the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital (JDCH) All-Stars Program. Without hesitation, the ambitious group jumped in to participate. The program allows local schools to continue earning service hours by ways of doing virtual activities and projects for patients, parents, and healthcare workers. This past fall and into the holiday season, NJHS students created over 500 cards and collected over 50 bears to send over to South Florida’s premier children’s hospital. The project, “Cards and Cuddles”, brought plenty of smiles to the many patients and staff members. Naturally, the NJHS wanted to do overdeliver, so they invited other organizations within the school to join them. Latinos in Action, peer counselors, and the art students were happy to participate. The Art 2 classes made 3D cards to give to critically ill patients. “These types of projects are the foundation of the National Junior Honor Society. They allow us to give back to our community especially during an extremely difficult time. We are also happy that we can make someone’s day a little bit brighter! Our goal is to continue with the program at our local high school and to continue helping and volunteering in our community,” said NJHS secretary Shreya Anand. “It makes me feel grateful
as well as thankful for everything I have. It also makes me feel proud to be a part of NJHS.” The JDCH Administrative Director of Outreach and Liaison Development, Maggie Portela, picked up the Halloween cards, and Falcon Cove NJHS advisors, Ms. Stella Stringer and Ms. Alison London with NJHS member, Ana Romero Aguirre, delivered the holiday cards with the cuddly bears to the Jeff Conine Clubhouse. “These types of projects make me feel good knowing that we’re making someone’s day better. It was a huge success! It brought smiles to the patients and healthcare workers at the hospital,” explained Valentina Castellanos, NJHS member. “What we’ve done the last few months with NJHS has taught me a lot. It has taught me how to become a better leader and a better person, so I hope to continue with these projects throughout my life.”

At Broward Health Coral Springs, patients also have access to advanced screenings and diagnoses in the hospital’s expansive cath lab that includes four patient care bays and is equipped with the latest patient monitoring technology. “The goal of our cath lab is to help improve the overall health of the community where our

Broward Health Medical Center was also the first hospital in Broward County to offer patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF), an alternative to long-term blood thinners with the next-generation WATCHMAN FLX Left Atrial Appendage Closure (LAAC) implant. The WATCHMAN FLX, which was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, may reduce the risk of stroke in patients with NVAF who need an alternative to oral anticoagulation therapy. Since its inception, more than 300 procedures have been performed in seven years. In addition to being the first in bringing this technology, Broward Health is part of a large-scale clinical trial looking to expand the patient population eligible for the Watchman FLX. A clinical study, partly conducted at Broward Health Medical Center, revealed that the WATCHMAN FLX had a success rate of about 99%, said Ahmed Osman, M.D., medical director of the Cardiac Electrophysiology Lab at Broward Health Medical Center. “We can discontinue blood thinners and have just as much protection from stroke,” he said. Additionally, Watchman FLX protection is continuous, unlike blood thinners, which must be stopped before and after surgery. Other benefits include potentially reducing risks of complication and possibly accelerating patient recovery. “We are hoping that all patients who have AFib will have the chance of coming off blood thinners,” Dr. Osman said. The re-imagined cardiac cath labs, clinical trials and the use of first-in-its-kind technology are just a few examples of Broward Health’s multilayered approach to advanced cardiac care with a focus on enhancing patients’ health and wellness. an we live without love? No, we can not. All of us need at least someone or something to share love with ! “There is only one happiness in this life, to love and to be loved”; this is how George Sand, a French Novelist described what his vision of love is about and I totally agree with her view. Love gives us a purpose, to love someone or something gives us the power to follow our dreams, it gives us the meaning of living, hope and it brings us happiness! ”Love is in the air”, is a famous saying, and I believe is actually true. Love is in the air and we do not even notice it. Love is present in every little detail of our lives, sometimes love lies in something as simple and common as a beautiful sunny sky in the morning or our neighbor’s nice gesture of waving to us before driving away to work. A goodbye kiss from our children before going to school is one of my favorite demonstrations of LOVE.

Sometimes our busy lives does not allow us to appreciate the love that surrounds us, so please, be mindful, keep your heart, eyes and mind open to those gifts that life gives us everyday and in the same way or even more important, please do not forget to be intentional every chance you might have to show how much you love your family, your friends, your neighbor, your coworkers and the children in your life. Children are sponges and mimic what we teach or show them, if you are intentional in your appreciation and demonstration of love, they too will be. February is the month of love and friendship so do not miss the opportunity to express this powerful feeling to those around you. You never know who’s life you might impact in a positive way by spreading LOVE! Happy Valentine’s Day!

Python Elimination Program Accepting New Participants
N
on-native Burmese pythons have established a breeding population in South Florida and are one of the most concerning invasive species in Everglades National Park. Pythons compete with native wildlife for food, which includes mammals, birds, and other reptiles.
The Burmese python is now distributed across more than a thousand square miles of southern Florida, including all of Everglades National Park and areas to the north including Big Cypress National Preserve and Collier-Seminole State Forest. A number of Burmese pythons have been found in the Florida Keys, but there is not yet confirmation of a breeding population in the Keys. The South Florida Water Management District Governing Board is taking aggressive action to protect the Everglades and eliminate invasive pythons from across the landscape. Starting in March 2017, the Python Elimination Program incentivizes a limited number of public-spirited individuals to humanely euthanize these destructive snakes which have become an invasive apex predator in the Everglades. The program provides access to python removal agents on designated lands in Monroe, Miami-Dade, Broward, Collier, Hendry, Lee, and Palm Beach counties. The program is now accepting applications for new python removal

agents. All submitted applications will be kept on file and reviewed whenever positions become available. Python removal agents will receive $10.00 per hour or $15.00 per hour depending on the area for up to ten (10) hours each day while actively searching for pythons on designated lands. For all eliminated pythons, the District will make an additional payment per python: $50.00 for pythons measuring up to four (4) feet, and an extra $25.00 for every foot measured above four (4) feet. See example below:
To be eligible, python removal agents must: • Be at least eighteen (18) years of age • Possess a valid driver's license • Possess a valid email address • Have a bank account for direct deposit

THE DONOWAY CENTER New Clinical Trial Available Now for Patients with Advanced & Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer
Are you, or someone you know, being treated for Advanced or Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer with chemotherapy alone? Contact Dr. Robert Donoway at Atlas Oncology in Hollywood, Florida. Dr. Donoway is leading a new clinical trial using multi-modality therapy: combining Pancreatic Nanoknife Ablation with chemoimmuno-radiotherapy to treat advanced stage cancer patients from around the world. With over 35 years of experience performing pancreatic surgery in South Florida, Dr. Donoway recognized that, because of its late diagnosis, up to 85% of the patients treated with surgery for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease. This fact limits the benefit a patient might get from the Whipple surgery. Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating Nanoknife surgery with chemotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially compared to chemotherapy alone. Dr. Donoway has been a pioneer in the use of Pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex advanced cases. During the past decade, he remains the only surgical oncologist performing the procedure in South Florida. Patients from around the globe have traveled to benefit from this ground-breaking treatment, which is
FDA approved. Dr. Donoway also treats other advanced cancers, such as liver, breast, and sarcomas, using Nanoknife surgery. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating pancreatic cancer. The treatment has remained largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 9-10% five-year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, all we’re doing is confirming Einstein’s definition of Insanity.” Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over eight years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” Dr. Donoway will be presenting the long-term results of his pancreatic treatment paradigm for advanced and metastatic disease later this fall at an International cancer society in Europe For more information about Dr. Donoway and the PancreaticIRE/NanoKnife Program and clinical trials call 305-682-1995 and visit www.AtlasOncology.com.

ARTHROSCOPY OF THE FOOT & ANKLE By Dr. Carlo A. Messina
F
oot and ankle injuries are very common in sports or in general activities of daily living. Many structures including bone, ligament, cartilage, and joint lining may be injured. Injuries may occur from a single traumatic event or from overuse. Injuries may occur during the teenage years that may manifest themselves later on. These injuries may cause stiffness and pain in the foot or the ankle joints, especially after getting out of bed first thing in the morning to walk. This stiffness and pain will be present for a proportional period of time usually to the degree of joint injury. With weightbearing, the joint usually loosens and the person is able to ambulate. This stiffness and pain will redevelop if the person sits for a period of time and tries to get up and walk. As the day goes on, the foot or ankle may ache, especially with excessive activity. Swelling may be present over the area that is injured. Instability may develop if the ligaments have been injured causing the foot or ankle to constantly twist. When these injuries are unresponsive to conservative treatment which may include orthotics, medication or rehabilitation, arthroscopic surgery may be necessary to remove the damaged tissue in the foot and ankle. A m i n i a t u re camera is placed into the injured joint allowing an image to be seen on
66 / Our City Weston / February 2022 / OurCityMedia.com
a television screen. The joint is visualized, and small instruments are introduced into the joint to clean out and repair the damage. Fragments of bone and cartilage are often removed. Suctioning of debris and smoothing rough surfaces will often allow a joint to resume its normal gliding motion. Arthroscopic surgery may be used to treat chronic joint pain and swelling; arthritis and bone spurs; loose bone and cartilage fragments; stiff, scarred joints; and ankle fractures that have not completely recovered. The advantages of this treatment include faster recovery; less pain and swelling; avoids large incisions; low risk of infection; it is an outpatient procedure; and a quicker return to activities. Joints are designed to give our bodies freedom of movement. Wear and tear of a joint due to injury or due to aging may alter the lifestyle of an individual. When conservative treatments fail, arthroscopic surgery should be considered. The surgery is especially helpful for a fracture that has occurred to the ankle even after the ankle has been fixed surgically. The cartilage in the ankle joint may have been damaged during the injury causing chronic stiffness and pain that may be mild but never goes away completely. Patients often think that this is a very livable condition. However, once treated arthroscopically, a full return to activity may be possible.

ASK THE EXPERT
THE AGING EYE
By Jane Therrien OD, FIAOMC, Optometric Physician
S
ince your 40s, you h ave p ro b a b l y noticed that you needed glasses to see up close. You may have more trouble adjusting to glare or distinguishing some colors, particularly shades of green or blue. These changes are a normal part of aging. They alone cannot stop you from enjoying an active lifestyle. They will not stop you from maintaining your independence. In fact, you can live an active life well into your golden years without ever experiencing severe vision loss. But as you age, you should know you are at higher risk of developing age-related eye diseases and conditions.
What Are These Diseases?
These conditions affect different parts of the eye. If not caught early and treated, they can lead to vision loss and even blindness.
Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
AMD is a common eye disease among people aged 60 and older. It gradually destroys the macula, the part of the eye that provides sharp, central vision needed for seeing objects clearly. It comes in two forms: dry and wet. Each form requires different techniques to be used by eye care professionals to treat the condition.
Cataract
A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s lens and is common in older adults and people with diabetes. Vision loss by cataracts is successfully restored with surgery. Although cataract surgery is one of the most common procedures performed in the United States today, some people never need it. Many others are able to postpone it for years.
Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is the most common condition among people with diabetes. It damages the blood vessels in the retina, usually in both eyes. If you have early-stage retinopathy, your eye care professional may suggest controlling your blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol to prevent the disease from getting worse. For the more advanced stage, you may need laser surgery.
Glaucoma
Glaucoma is not just one disease. It is a group of diseases that are all caused by the same event; fluid in the eye builds up and damages the optic nerve. Your eye care professional 68 / Our City Weston / February 2022
can help control glaucoma by prescribing eye drops or pills. Laser surgery is another way to open clogged areas so that the eye fluid drains and eases pressure against the optic nerve. Surgery is another option, but is used only when drops or laser surgery fails to control the pressure.
What is Low Vision?
People who have age-related eye disease are more likely to develop low vision. Low vision means that, even with regular glasses, contact lenses, medicine, and surgery, everyday tasks are difficult to do. Reading the mail, shopping, cooking, seeing the TV, and writing can seem challenging. Fortunately, help is available. Low vision specialists can offer a variety of services that help people make the most of their remaining vision. They cannot, however, restore lost vision. As a result, people with low vision can
continue enjoying friends, family, hobbies, and other interests just as they always have. The key is knowing there is help.
Get a Dilated Eye Exam.
If you are aged 50 or older, make a point of visiting your eye care professional annually. Having a dilated eye exam every year or as recommended by your eye care professional can help detect age-related eye diseases in their early stages. Early detection and treatment can help save your sight. So even if you are not experiencing vision problems, you should get an annual eye exam. This is one of the best things you can do to protect your sight.

How Often Do You Hit Solid Shots? By Dean Sklar, PGA Professional
I
mproving your golf game begins by improving your ball striking, as there’s nothing in golf quite like making pure contact. Once you experience this sensation, you’ll be hooked, trying to repeat it over and over again. Achieving solid contact tends to be difficult for many golfers; it’s what separates the pros and better players from average to higher-handicap golfers. The good news is, if you experiment with the accompanying tips and drills, you can learn how to hit solid and pure golf shots more often. Hands forward upon impact – As you strike the golf ball, the grip end of the club needs to be leading the hands and club head through the hitting area (a mandatory ingredient for hitting solid iron shots). This move causes the club head to compress the ball into the ground, which helps make your divot after the ball, not before. Correct posture – The second key to achieving solid contact is having correct posture throughout the swing, as this allows you to swing the club on the proper plane. The majority of golfers who struggle with making solid contact lose their posture as the club head connects with the ball. This leads to many miss-hits; fat and thin shots, hooks, slices and chunks. It is essential that you keep your posture, just as it is at address, throughout the swing. Control the Clubface – The final ingredient for solid ball striking is controlling the clubface through impact. In other words, the face of your club must be square when it contacts the ball. Most golfers have the face of the club too open at impact, which leads to miss-hits that cause loss of power and distance. The clubface should rotate from open (prior to impact) to square (at impact) to slightly closed (after impact). The timing of this face rotation is what separates good ball strikers from not-sogood ball strikers. Proper practice will improve this timing. Here are a few practice drills to try: Golf Ball drill – By placing an extra golf ball behind your ball (12 to 14 inches behind the target line), you will learn to strike the ball with a descending blow and have your hands leading the club head through the hitting area. If you use a scooping motion (hitting the ground
before you make contact with the ball), you won’t be able to strike your ball without first hitting the extra ball. Posture drill – Controlling your posture throughout the swing is something that all good players do, and most amateur players don’t. When the clubface strikes the ball, you must return to the same posture that you had at address. Practice by facing a mirror and taking a half backswing, then swing the club down to the ball, and stop. You should return to your address position. Keep repeating this motion until it starts to feel natural. On the range, run through this drill before you hit each practice shot. Release the Clubface drill – Put a band-aid
70 / Our City Weston / February 2022 / OurCityMedia.com
on the back of your left wrist. On your down swing, turn your left hand over, so the bandaid is pointing down toward the ground as you swing the club head through the hitting area. On your practice swings, do this slowly, so you experience the feel of the club head turning over upon impact. When hitting balls, try to just let this motion happen, and after a while it will become automatic.

What Causes Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal disease starts when bacteria form plaque on the teeth. Within days, minerals in the saliva bond with plaque to form tartar, a hard substance that adheres to the teeth. The bacteria work their way under the gums and cause gingivitis, which is an inflammation of the gums. Once under the gums, bacteria destroy the supporting tissue around the tooth, leading to tooth loss. Inflammation of the bone and tooth support structures is referred to as periodontitis. The combination of gingivitis and periodontitis is known as periodontal disease. Bacteria associated with dental disease can travel in the bloodstream to infect the heart, kidneys, and liver.

Focus on your cardiovascular health
February is American Heart Month
By Melanie Brocato, M.Ed.
Life Safety Educator, Broward Sheriff's Office Department of Fire Rescue & Emergency Services
H
eart disease and stroke are leading causes of death in America. Hypertension or high blood pressure is the leading risk factor for heart disease and stroke. As we enter American Heart Month (February) it’s a great time for people of all ages to focus on their cardiovascular health. Identifying risk factors that put us at risk for developing hypertension are great ways to help prevent heart disease. Additionally, knowing what to do in the event of a cardiac emergency is an important step in helping increase a person’s chance of survival. It is estimated that about fifty percent of adults in the United States have hypertension (defined by the Centers for Disease Control as adults with a systolic blood pressure more than 130 mmHg or a diastolic blood pressure more than 80 mmHg or anyone the currently takes medication for hypertension). More than 515,000 deaths in 2019, reported hypertension as the primary contributing cause of death. Approximately 25% of adults with hypertension have their condition under control. It is estimated that the average cost of hypertension in the United States is approximately $131 billion annually. People who have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, kidney disease, a family history of heart disease, or people who smoke are at a greater risk for heart disease and stroke. If you are between the ages of 45-70 years old and have never had a heart attack or stroke, you can assess your risk by visiting the American Heart Association’s Check. Change. Control. Calculator to estimate your risk over the next 10 years. For more information, please visit heart.org/ccccalculator. While cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the US, the good news is that there are many positive changes people can make to help prevent cardiovascular disease. Following a few simple tips can help prevent heart disease and stroke. First, know your risk. Avoid smoking and make positive lifestyle changes if needed to reduce your risk. Eating a healthy diet, being physically active, and watching your weight are all great ways to reduce your risk. For those who may already have high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, or other health issues, work closely with your healthcare provider to manage your conditions. If you take any medications for any of your conditions, be sure to take medications as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Most cardiac arrests occur in the home. Knowing how and when to perform CPR for a person experiencing a cardiac emergency can dramatically increase their chance of survival by keeping blood and oxygen flowing through the body. Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue encourages the Weston community to participate in virtual CPR classes throughout the month of February to learn the steps necessary to perform CPR. Classes are currently available online, free of charge, and recommended for people ages 8+. To register for an upcoming virtual CPR class, please visit https://BSOFireRescuePublicEducation.as.me/ Understanding and identifying our risk(s) related to heart disease can help us implement positive lifestyle changes that may decrease our risk of heart attack and/or stroke. Knowing what to do to help someone suffering from a cardiac emergency can help to increase their chance of survival following a cardiac emergency.
