“The teachers and the school set the stepping stones for my daughter’s future successes. Not only does she continue to excel academically but she is a role model for her peers. Amongst other things a Children’s Carousel taught her to be a good friend and, most importantly, respectful of others. We couldn’t have asked for a better learning environment.” Danielle Battisti-Katz

S

ummer in South Florida means heat, humidity, and lots of rain. According to USClimateData.com, average rainfall in Broward County almost triples during the summer months. In fact, we average nine inches of rain each month.

Lucky for us, there are plenty of things to do when Mother Nature does not cooperate. There are museums, and art galleries, for every interest, from paintings by talented local artists at the Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery in Pembroke Pines to the dynamic and bridge exhibits at Young At Art Museum in Davie. Children universally love Fort Lauderdale’s hands-on Museum of Discovery and Science. Adults and older teens can learn more about history’s darkest moment at The Holocaust Documentation and Education Center in Hollywood. Rainy days are the perfect time to explore new interests. Try a yoga or spin class, jump around at an indoor trampoline park, or learn how to blow glass at Hollywood Circle. The possibilities are endless. So, next time the weather puts a damper on your outdoor plans, explore all the fun and engaging indoor options South Florida has to offer.

SPECIAL FEATURE Summertime in South Florida is often referred to as the “slow season.” Snowbirds fly north to cooler climates and families go on vacation. Luckily, there are still so many family activities

Take them out to the ballgame! Going to a Marlins game is fun for the whole family and won’t break the bank. Tickets at Loan Depot Park start at just $20! Even if you don’t like baseball, the experience of bringing the family to the ballpark is worth the price of admission. When you head out to the game, don’t be scared off by the weather! The Marlins’ stadium has a retractable roof to protect you from the elements.

Everglades Airboat Tours Check out an alligator in its natural habitat! Airboat tours are a great way to get outside and experience the natural beauty of the everglades. Head over to Everglades Holiday Park for a great day in nature. Be sure to bring a hat and some sunscreen, too, because the South Florida sun will be out in full force. Don’t let that discourage you, though; a cold drink in the everglades will make all your worries go away. Everglades Holiday Park 21940 Griffin Road, Weston 954-434-8111 evergladesholidaypark.com

Hunt for Turtles at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park Turtles! A person cannot say enough good things about John Pennekamp State Park. If you love scuba diving or snorkeling, a day trip to the Keys is the perfect way to spend a day. The different fish and coral are beautiful all by themselves, add some sea turtle sightings and you’ve made a memory that no one in the family will ever forget. If you are not a big swimming, you can always take a trip on a glass-bottom boat and see the natural beauty of the coral from the surface! John Pennekamp State Park 102601 Overseas Hwy, Key Largo 305-451-6300, pennekamppark.com

Get Your Groove on at South Beach Believe it or not, the summer is the perfect time for South Florida locals to check out South Beach. It may be hotter, but the crowds are typically smaller, and things are a bit less crazy than Spring Break! The culture, people, and food, however, still make for an incredible experience. If you get hungry, check out Time Out Market near Lincoln Road to discover all the different flavors of Miami in one place. You might want to get an AirBnb and see what America’s best nightlife is all about.

Try Your Luck at the Hard Rock If you’ve lived here for longer than a couple years, then you have witnessed the Great Guitar grow into the Florida sky. The architectural icon has quickly become a symbol for Hollywood’s biggest Casino. What you may not know are all the entertainment options that grew up around the new hotel. A huge concert auditorium hosts A-list acts year-round. There are also multiple fine dining restaurants in addition to Broward County’s only Vegas-style resort pool. If that didn’t get your juices pumping, try your luck in the Texas Holdem Poker room. Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino 5701 Stirling Road Davie, FL 33314 877-788-1966 seminolehardrockhollywood.com

Waste-Away an Afternoon at Margaritaville There is no doubting what Jimmy Buffet would tell you to do in South Florida. Located on the Hollywood Broadwalk, the Resort Hotel is a destination for families looking to have good fun, good eats, and maybe one of those special cocktails! If you don’t want to eat at one of the fabulous onsite restaurants, you can always take a walk down the beach and stop at one of the oceanside eateries.

available to do. With the pandemic slowing down and places starting to open back up the opportunities to go out and have fun are endless. Here are some of our favorite fun adventures in South Florida.

(Nick’s bar is a favorite) For fun, feel free to take a ride on the Flowrider or wander over to the St. Somewhere Spa and unwind. Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort 1111 N Ocean Dr., Hollywood 844-562-5625 margaritavillehollywoodbeachresort.com

Get Culture at an Art Walk With the COVID-19 epidemic finally winding down, South Florida’s many Arts Walks are coming back. There are few better ways to appreciate the area’s many artists than attending an Art Walk. Plus, they are usually FREE! Our favorites are: Downtown Hollywood Art Walk 3rd Saturday of the month, 6:00pm - 11:00pm floridashollywood.org/artwalk FAT Village Art Walk Last Saturday of the month 6:00pm - 10:00pm fatvillage.com/artwalk

Get Fancy and Go Shopping Head over to Mizner Park in Boca Raton to shop at their fabulous open-air Mall. Mizner Park is a shopper’s paradise. Home of renowned jewelers and boutiques, there is something there that everyone will love. If you get hungry

during your shopping extravaganza, do not worry, Mizner Park is also home to many fabulous restaurants like Max’s Grille and Yard House. When you’re done shopping and eating, end your night by heading to a movie that the whole family will enjoy! Mizner Park 327 Plaza Real Suite 315, Boca Raton 561-362-0606 miznerpark.com

Go on a South Florida Safari Does traveling to South Africa to experience a Safari sound a bit overwhelming? About an hour’s drive away, and for just thirty dollars, you can get the experience of driving through 600 acres of land that is home to over 1,000 free-roaming exotic animals. The experience is great for the entire family. Lion Country Safari was ranked in the top ten safaris by USA Today and has many other attractions such as feeding the animals and splashing around in the water spray ground. Lion Country Safari 2003 Lion Country Safari Road, Loxahatchee 561-793-1084 lioncountrysafari.com

Visit Flamingo Gardens Flamingo Gardens is home to 60 acres of tropical paradise. The wildlife sanctuary has the most extensive collection of native Florida wildlife, and the botanical gardens showcase more than 3000 different species of plants. The centerpiece of the gardens is a natural hammock of 200 year-

old Live Oaks dripping with species orchids and epiphytes. Here sits the historic Wray Home Museum, built in 1933. It is the oldest residence in Broward County west of University Drive. Whether you want to see alligators, bears, bobcats, or panthers, or just walk around and enjoy the great outdoors, Flamingo Gardens is a great place to visit. Flamingo Gardens 3750 South Flamingo Road Davie 954-473-2955 flamingogardens.org

Go Horseback Riding One of the best ways to get outside and enjoy the South Florida sun is to go horseback riding! There are several stables in Davie, Parkland, and Plantation that offer riders of all skill levels a chance to hit the trail and become closer to nature; visit equinenow.com to find listings in your area. Our favorite is Malachi Acres in Parkland. Achieve your riding goals, whether they are dreams of quiet rides into the sunset or showing your own horse in a National competition. oshua Hoffman is an exceptional human being. He was only one pound, eleven ounces when he was born, and was not expected to live longer than a couple of days. Yet, he beat the odds and survived. Unfortunately, complications from his early birth rendered him almost blind. Yet, despite his vision impairment, the 18-year-old has accomplished more than men twice his age. He was named National Ambassador for the March of Dimes organization while only in Primary School. During this time, he traveled to 27 states and 52 cities to advocate for preemies like him. He also lobbied Congress, gave media interviews, and sang to 100,000 music fans. His favorite moment was a bit quieter - a private meeting with President Obama in the Oval Office. This curious teen enjoys studying our planet and outer space. His dream is to go to the Moon. “My eyes are too fragile to withstand the g-forces of a launch,” said Joshua, “so I developed a spacecraft concept that reduces g-forces for civilian flights and worked with a mentor at the University of Miami's Aerospace Department; who helped develop the feasibility of my proposal.” Joshua never let his poor vision stop

him from anything, even traveling to live in England as an exchange student. “I faced my greatest challenge yet when I left the security of my home and school to be an exchange student in England,” said Joshua, “I took many photographs of my journey and wrote a student travel blog to share my favorite photos with other students and travelers.” It’s no wonder that this accomplished American Heritage student received the prestigious Lighthouse Guild Scholarship and will be studying Geography at Virginia Tech next year. “My major in college will be Geography which will prepare me for a career in urban planning and space tourism.” Joshua plans to participate in a study abroad program in college. Perhaps it took near blindness for Joshua to see that anything is possible. We can’t wait to see where he soars next. Lighthouse Guild scholarships are based on strong academic accomplishment and merit to help students who are legally blind make a successful transition to college and graduate school. The 2021 recipients are from diverse backgrounds and will

be attending some of the nation’s most competitive universities. Since 2005, Lighthouse Guild’s Scholarship Program has awarded approximately $2.6 million in scholarships to outstanding students from around the country. Former scholarship recipients have gone on to careers as nurses, attorneys, teachers, engineers, chemists, composers, musicians, neuroscientists, social workers, business owners, investors, epidemiologists, physician assistants, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, journalists and computer scientists. "We are particularly pleased to provide scholarships this year during a time when COVID-19 has presented unprecedented challenges for students who are visually impaired,” said Calvin W. Roberts, MD, President and CEO of Lighthouse Guild. “I commend these outstanding students for their perseverance and academic achievements and wish them success in their future careers.”

ASK THE EXPERT

Heart Disease Myths By Yordanka Reyna, MD, FACC

Medical Director, Heart Failure Services, Advanced Heart Failure & Transplant Cardiology

Y

our heart is a muscle that pumps blood throughout your body. If you have heart failure, your heart cannot pump blood efficiently and your body may not get all the blood and oxygen it needs to function normally. Let’s deubunk 5 common myths about heart failure.

MYTH 1: If you have heart disease, you need to take it easy.

For the vast majority of people with heart disease, being sedentary is a bad idea. It can lead to blood clots in the legs and a decline in overall physical condition. Physical activity helps strengthen the heart muscle, improves blood flow to the brain and internal organs.

MYTH 2: If you take a cholesterol- lowering drug, you can eat anything. If you take a statin and continue to eat foods that are high in cholesterol plus

saturated fat, the drug will not be as effective, and your cholesterol level will not fall, and may even rise.

MYTH 3: It’s okay to have higher blood pressure when you’re older.

Blood pressure tends to rise with age because artery walls become stiff with age. Stiff arteries force the heart to pump harder. Blood pounding against the artery walls damages them over time. The overworked heart muscle becomes less effective and pumps harder. This increases the risk of heart attack and stroke.

MYTH 5: “I’d know if I had high blood pressure because there would be warning signs.”

High blood pressure is called the “silent killer” because you don’t usually know you have it. You may never experience symptoms. Early treatment of high blood pressure is critical because, if left untreated, it can cause heart attack, stroke, kidney damage and other serious health problems.

MYTH 4: Young people do not need to worry about heart disease

It is true that heart disease is more likely to affect people over the age of 65, but 4-10% of heart attacks occur in people under the age of 45 years, mainly men. It is how we live our lives as children, adolescents and adults that lays the groundwork for heart health as we age.

little over a decade ago, a humble Weston family started what has now become a pivotal program for local athletes with disabilities. The Junko family brought the nationally known Miracle League to Weston to allow children (and young adults) with disabilities (regardless of abilities) the opportunity to play baseball right in their “backyard”. For fourteen seasons, the team played at Rose G. Price Park in Pembroke Pines on a custom-designed field with synthetic turf to accommodate wheelchairs and other assisted walking devices. In 2019, the non-profit organization Give Opportunities to Disability wanted to donate to The Weston Miracle League only to find out that it was their last season. Weston resident Herbert Corona was taken aback and was determined to do whatever he could to keep it running. But then came the pandemic and all efforts came to a halt. “We know how important space for leisure activities is because I, myself, got a disability 32 years ago, and my cousin has been working with people with disabilities for more than 25 years. So, here we are trying to do our best. We are proud to represent The City of Weston,” stated Corona. Currently, Corona is the President of the Weston Miracle League organization, and he is trying to find land in Weston or a current field that can be converted to assist those with disabilities. As The Miracle League slogan says, “Every Child Deserves

to Play Baseball”. Therefore, there is no stopping Corona and his all-star team which consists of the many dedicated volunteers, parents, players, and sponsors. Although they cannot change or cure any of these disabilities, the League wants to provide the joy and benefits which come from America’s favorite pastime. “The topic of disability is typically seen in a negative perspective, often with pity and in a discriminatory manner, and few times we see or recognize the many achievements and contributions by people with disabilities throughout history, such as

Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Thomas Alva Edison, Ludwig Van Beethoven, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Stephen Hawking, the great George Herman “Babe” Ruth Jr., and many others who have made great contributions to humanity,” explained Corona. “The only difference between those people and our players is that they got an opportunity, and we want an opportunity too!”

LEGALLY SPEAKING

I

Your College Student By Bruce Iden, Esquire

t’s the time of year when high school grads are preparing to leave for college. Whether attending a Florida school, or one in a state far away, it’s an exciting period for kids but an emotional time for parents. They’ve lived under your roof for 18 years, and distance won’t keep you from worrying about their well-being. It’s no surprise you may wonder, “Have I done all that I can to keep them safe?” Many parents are stunned to discover that in medical emergencies they may not be entitled to information about their college-aged children. Why? Because in the eyes of the law, your 18-year old is an adult with rights of privacy. Legally, parents have no standing to know or do anything. In an emergency, how will health care providers determine whom to call with urgent news? Will they know your child’s prior medical history? Oftentimes, they simply won’t. What’s worse, even if a parent learns of a child’s illness or accident, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) prohibits doctors and hospitals from providing information about an adult’s medical condition without his/her written consent. While some hospitals make reasonable judgments about giving information to parents, others have refused to reveal anything, least of all over the phone. Some may not even acknowledge to frantic parents whether their adult child has been admitted to a hospital. What can a parent do? It’s simple. Have your adult child execute advance (health) directives, which include the following:

Authorization for Release of Protected Health Infor▸ HIPPA mation. Grants health care providers permission to disclose medical information to designated individuals, which is essential to informed and timely decision-making.

Care Power of Attorney. A document that authorizes ▸ Health another person to make medical decisions for your adult child, if they cannot.

Will. A declaration stating whether or not life-sustain▸ Living ing procedures should be used to prolong life when a termi-

nal condition is irreversible or death is imminent. Just as important as these documents are, emergency contact and medical history information should also be immediately available when urgently needed, or the information is useless. We strongly recommend that every adult carry in their wallet an emergency medical information card that makes contact information, prior medical history, allergies, and advance directives instantly accessible to medical facilities or emergency personnel anywhere in the world. An estate planning attorney can prepare advance directives, and arrange for an emergency medical card. While you as the parent can arrange an appointment, preparing these documents does require a meeting or conversation with your child. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?

Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the areas of estate planning, real estate and business law for over 30 years. Falk and Falk Law Firm Voted Best Personal Injury Firm in Weston

nfortunately, sometimes bad things happen to good people. Luckily, when those bad things happen, Steven and Eric Falk can be on your side. What makes the Falk and Falk team so effective is the fact that they start working for you as soon as they get your call. If you were in an accident that caused only property damage, you may not need an attorney. However, if you sustained any injuries – regardless of how minor they are – obtaining legal consultation is vital before deciding what course of action to take. Falk and Falk offers free consultations to help potential clients determine what their next step will be. Lawyers and claims adjustors employed by an insurance company get paid, praised and promoted for keeping their side’s costs down. They know the

business, and are eager for you to settle your case as fast as possible, before any more issues arise that can potentially increase their liability and costs. In fact, dealing with an insurance company without legal counsel could also result in you unknowingly waiving important legal rights, such as filing a lawsuit in a timely manner. When an insurance company is dealing with a lawyer who has a record of success and trial experience, they are much more likely to offer a fair settlement. The attorneys at Falk and Falk are experts at litigation and managing the complex and at times infuriating process

of negotiating with insurance companies. Steven and Eric Falk have worked on behalf of Weston resdients for years. It is no wonder they were voted as the 2021 Best Personal Injury Attorneys in Weston.

hirteen local students now belong to a very elite club, joining the likes of Film Director, M. Night Shyamalan, Amazon Chairman Jeff Bezos, and U. S. Chief Justice John Roberts as National Merit Scholars. These Class of 2021 graduates are among 2,500 distinguished high school graduates who have won National Merit Scholarships worth more than $6 million. Each scholar will receive a National Merit $2500 Scholarship. They include: • Alexis Logan, Pine Crest School • Emily B. Odza, College Academy At Broward College • Sierra Stocker, Pine Crest School • Montserrat De Allende Silva, American Heritage School • William Chan, American Heritage School • Jay R. Gopal, North Broward Preparatory School • Moira Minielly, Pine Crest School • Sarah Mohammed, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School • Briya Patel, American Heritage School • Rachel J. Kamphaus, Cardinal Gibbons High School • Duncan E. Jurman, N. S. U. University School • Peyton A. Ronkin, N. S. U. University School • Nicole G. Vayman, Cypress Bay High School

Each year 2,500 Merit Scholar designees nationwide are chosen from a talent pool of more than 15,000 outstanding Finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners are the Finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The 2021 National Merit Scholarship program began in October 2019 when more than 1.5 million juniors took the Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as the preliminary screen of program entrants. Last fall, the highest-scoring students in each state, representing less than one percent of the nation’s high school seniors, were named Semifinalists. About 15,000 students met the high academic standards and other requirements needed to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. The Scholars were evaluated based on academic record, including the difficulty of subjects studied and grades earned, scores from two standardized exams, and contributions and leadership in school and community activities. Students also had to submit an essay and be endorsed and recommended by a high school official.

Arthroscopy

of the Foot and Ankle By Carlo A. Messina

oot and ankle injuries are very common in sports or in general activities of daily living. Many structures including bone, ligament, cartilage and joint lining may be injured. Injuries may occur from a single traumatic event or from overuse. Injuries may occur during the teenage years that may manifest themselves later on. These injuries may cause stiffness and pain in the foot or the ankle joints, especially after getting out of bed first thing in the morning to walk. This stiffness and pain will be present for a proportional period of time usually to the degree of joint injury. With weightbearing, the joint usually loosens and the person is able to ambulate. This stiffness and pain will redevelop if the person sits for a period of time and tries to get up and walk. As the day goes on, the foot or ankle may ache, especially with excessive activity. Swelling may be present over the area that is injured. Instability may develop if the ligaments have been injured causing the foot or ankle to constantly twist. When these injuries are unresponsive to conservative treatment which may include orthotics, medication or rehabilitation, arthroscopic surgery may be necessary to remove the damaged tissue in the foot and ankle.

44 / Our City Weston / July 2021 / OurCityMedia.com

A miniature camera is placed into the injured joint allowing an image to be seen on a television screen. The joint is visualized and small instruments are introduced into the joint to clean out and repair the damage. Fragments of bone and cartilage are often removed. Suctioning of debris and smoothing rough surfaces will often allow a joint to resume its normal gliding motion. CONDITIONS TREATED: ADVANTAGES: 1. Chronic joint pain and swelling - Faster recovery 2. Arthritis and bone spurs - Less pain and swelling 3. Loose bone and cartilage fragments - Avoids large incisions 4. Stiff, scarred joints - Low risk of infection 5. Ankle fractures that have not completely - Outpatient procedures recovered 6. Quicker return to activities Joints are designed to give our bodies freedom of movement. Wear and tear of a joint due to injury or due to aging may alter the lifestyle of an individual. When conservative treatments fail, arthroscopic surgery should be considered.

The surgery is especially helpful for a fracture that has occurred to the ankle even after the ankle has been fixed surgically. The cartilage in the ankle joint may have been damaged during the injury causing chronic stiffness and pain that may be mild but never goes away completely. Patients often think that this is a very livable condition. However, once treated arthroscopically a full return to activity may be possible.

Carlo A. Messina, DPM, is a Board Certified Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgeon, Diplomate American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. He is a Foot and Ankle Surgeon with the Foot, Ankle and Leg Specialists of South Florida and specializes in treating infants, children, teens and adults. Cypress Bay Senior Honored for Work on

The One World Project

C

By Terry Jaillet

ypress Bay Senior Raisa Ali, along with fellow classmates, Valeria Parra Nogueiras and Ashley Valent received Honorable Mention recognition at the Miami Herald’s Silver Knights awards at the end of May. The honorees were selected from more than 619 students representing 65 Miami-Dade schools and 34 Broward schools, both public and private, were nominated by their schools. Raisa was honored for work founding The One World Project. She created the charity at the height of the pandemic. She quickly realized that personal protective equipment (PPE) was in short supply at local hospitals, for first responders, and for frontline workers. Raisa partnered with local Drapery design studio Beautiful Windows to design and manufacture masks to provide to frontline workers. Within weeks of its founding, hospitals across the United States were

asking for masks from One World. This was the start of her project and the start of an entire community, youths, and elders coming together on one important message, giving back to the superheroes of our community that saved lives. As the organization Raisa built grew, she never lost sight of her original purpose, to be the inspiring change for her fellow peers. She wanted to show others her age that they didn't need any big organization to work with nor have a major following to be a part of the change. The One World Project has broadened its focus, beyond just masks, and provided food baskets to poor families adversely affected by COVID-19, and held food distributions/ hygiene kit distributions for the homeless. We can’t wait to hear about Raisa’s incredible contributions to the world when she moves on to college next year.

SCHOOL NEWS

Hu‘MANATEE’ Does Exist By Beverly Perkins

N

o doubt, the 2020-2021 school year was challenging for teachers, students, and parents alike as everyone carefully navigated through the pandemic. However, the students at Manatee Bay Elementary did an exceptional job of adjusting to the “new normal” with all the new rules and CDC guidelines in place.

Nevertheless, even with all the extra safety measures, some students were still affected by COVID-19. In this case, they had to return to online learning at home for two weeks while they recovered from the virus. To keep these boys and girls from feeling isolated and disconnected from their teachers and friends at school “Operation COVID Care” was born. The “Manateam” came up with the idea, with the support of the PTA and other school partners, to ensure the students’ sense of belonging in the hopes of helping them cope more effectively with the additional stress of the virus. These students would receive a care package with treats and a stuffed

manatee put together by the many parent volunteers. “This is our way of giving them a hug and letting them know we are rooting for them to return to school as we know we are ‘better together’,” explained COVID Team Nurse Kim. “We love to see the excitement on their faces when they open their care packages as it brings a smile to our faces as well,” added COVID Team Nurse Asha. Over 40 colorful packages were delivered to the little manatees at home. Parents were thrilled with the program as it brightened their day as well. “As busy as we are, this was an exceptional and very important project. The gift just let them know that we do care! Just yesterday, I had a student come up to me to thank me for the gift and that meant a lot to me…that in itself just warmed my heart,” exclaimed Principal Heather C. Hedman-Devaughn.

WESTON MUSIC SOCIETY ANNOUNCES

Scholarship Winners

he Weston Music Society presented 10 scholarships to graduates from Cypress Bay and Western High Schools who will be continuing their music studies in college. For many years, the Weston Music Society has awarded these scholarships. In 2018, they created a Matching Scholarship category in which they match the sponsor’s donation. This created the opportunity to award between eight and ten scholarships yearly. President Gina Catone noted, “The Matching Scholarship category is a testament to the support of our sponsors who have been consistently generous with this program”. The nomination process asks the two schools to submit students eligible for this scholarship. We are especially grateful to Cypress Bay - Brett Dawson, Music Band Director and Tina Gill, Assistant Choral Director – and Western High – Johnnie Tracey, Music Band Director, Oliver Black, Drama Teacher and Brandon Monse, Performing Arts Department Chair and Chorus Teacher. Their cooperation and dedication made it happen in 2021. This year, because of the pandemic, there were special challenges because everything was done virtually. The teachers selected their nominees and sent questionnaires to them. The requests included background information and a short video presentation. The efforts of these dedicated teachers on behalf of their deserving applicants produced the talented recipient list below. Scholarship Committee Chair Kim

Schnitzius and Co-Chair Stephanie Bescherelle coordinated with the schools. Kim, who made the award presentations at the Commission meeting, said, “The WMS has been very fortunate to meet all these very talented student performers and we are always excited to follow their career paths. We often hear from them and they return to work with us”. For example, Jose Veliz, 2015 scholarship recipient, has played the piano on all of our FaceBook live concerts and taught a virtual class to the students at Everglades Elementary. Sebastian Scharovsky, 2020 award recipient, performed a saxophone solo for our Weston Town Center event in May 2021. This year, a special scholarship from the Rotary Club of Weston, in cooperation with the Weston Music Society, was awarded in memory of Past President Roger Lander. Gina concluded by saying, “We are so happy to recognize the accomplishments of our young performers in the arts. We are pleased that the focus for schools is now STEAM. Adding the Arts to STEM, especially music, aids students in analysis, creativity, and critical thinking. Our In-Schools Program and our High School Scholarship Program support the arts in education and complete two facets of our mission”.

Student Artist Showcase

Was A Virtual Success

T

he Arts Council of Greater Weston has held a Student Artist Showcase (SAS) for the past 14 years. It has usually hung in the Weston Branch Library for the month of May. There was an award ceremony for the student artists and their parents and the Weston Mayor and City Commission presented the awards. Needless to say, the pandemic created havoc with that format. (DID WE DO ANYTHING IN 2020 AND DOES THAT MAKE THIS THE 13TH OR 14TH EVENT?) So, SAS Director Gryssele Machicote did a swift pivot to a virtual event. She contacted the school art teachers, who

54 / Our City Weston / July 2021 / OurCityMedia.com

selected artwork from 2020 and 2021 to date. They sent in pictures of their selections, with name, grade, and school included. Gryselle commented, “Without their enthusiastic participation, we could not have made this happen. We are grateful to the teachers who, on behalf of their talented students, helped ensure these deserving artists were recognized”. There were six participating schools represented by 11 Art Staff members. Over 150 pieces of art were presented ranging from grades Pre-K through 12. They represented a variety of media, including ceramics, acrylic, colored pencil, ink, marker, and photography to name a few. Every participant received a ribbon and a certificate of participation. You can see the entire exhibition on www.1weston.com. So far, there have been 495 views, which is a tribute to the outstanding quality of the art. President Laura Dobranzski noted, “We are delighted to support these very special students. It is wonderful that STEM has become STEAM and includes the Arts, recognizing the creativity and critical thinking benefits it gives students. We hope to personally meet them all in 2022 and celebrate their accomplishments together.”

ROTARY NEWS

Serve to Change Lives

A

By Pete Pecci, Rotary Club Of Weston President 2021-22

s we start a new Rotary year, we have time to reflect on the past year for its challenges and its opportunities. Throughout challenging times, people of action realize the needs of their families, their communities, and their global networks while mobilizing resources and efforts to fulfill those needs. The Rotary International theme for its new year is "Serve to Change Lives." There may be no more appropriate time for such action. The Rotary Club of Weston leads by example to "Serve to Change Lives" in its community as a civic, philanthropic, and business networking leader. Our 150+ members donate their time in Service Above Self. In addition, their influence and monetary support for the Club's approved charities and events help support our community and exemplify the qualities of a Rotarian. Over the past year, the Rotary Club of Weston raised over $103,000 to provide scholarships to high school students in the Weston area to attend college who would not have had the opportunity otherwise. Also

awarded from this tremendous fund included scholarships for the Weston First Responders – Police & Fire Rescue and HANDY. The HANDY organization has transformed the lives of more than 50,000 Broward County children in foster and relative/non-relative care. The Rotary Club of Weston has raised over $2,000,000 for this scholastic endeavor since its inception 35 years ago. Our Club also raised over $78,000 just last year to support over 50 charities in our community, throughout the county, and globally. Club members are responsible for introducing many of the charities supported by the Rotary Club of Weston. They recognize a need, have a passion for becoming a "Champion" for a cause, and a willingness to work with Rotarians to direct and promote events benefitting the charity. We are dedicated to causes that build relationships, improve lives, create better communities, fight diseases, support education, and grow local economies. Amid the trying times this past year, our Club has enjoyed membership growth by maintaining the common bond of doing good in communities and fellowship. Additionally, Rotary makes available "Fellowships" – groups of like-minded Rotarians interested in

specific hobbies or pastimes - such as scuba diving, heavy metal music, chess, or 77 more choices. One such fellowship called "Rotary Means Business" allows Rotarians to gather specifically for business networking or help Rotarians find new employment or employees. Fellowships can be local or global, and it is sure to be something to meet most passions and create new relationships. As we start our new Rotary year on July 1st, I invite all interested in learning more about Rotary, becoming involved with our Club, and bringing your passions to support how we "Serve to Change Lives" to contact us WestonRotary@gmail.com.

The Rotary Club of Weston meets weekly in person at 7:30 AM on Thursdays at The Club at Weston Hills located at 2600 Country Club Way, Weston, FL 33332, and its satellite club meets bi-weekly. For more about the Rotary Club of Weston, visit www.westonrotary.com to learn more.

B

reast Implant Illness (BII) is a term used by women who have breast implants and who self- identify and describe a variety of symptoms including autoimmune issues, muscle aches, joint pain, fatigue, hair loss, headaches, photosensitivity, chronic pain, rash, anxiety, brain fog, sleep disturbance, depression, neurologic issues and hormonal issues that they feel are directly connected to their saline or silicone breast implants. The recent increase in patients reporting Breast Implant Illness (BII) symptoms appears to be related to increased awareness based on social media and presence of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIAALCL). There is one Facebook group alone with more than 50,000 members, all of whom report Breast Implant Illness (BII) symptoms. This is not to say that social media is the cause of Breast Implant Illness (BII) however, it may account for the rapid increases in patient reporting. BII is not an official medical diagnosis. There is no diagnostic testing specifically for Breast Implant Illness (BII). This is one of the current areas of focus for the Aesthetic Surgery Education and Research Foundation, the research arm of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. There are tests for autoimmune diseases that can be performed to evaluate for potential causes of a patient’s symptoms. There are patients who have symptoms they attribute to Breast Implant Illness (BII) with positive immune testing and others with all laboratory tests which show no abnormalities. In 1999, The Institute of Medicine Committee on the Safety of Silicone conducted an extensive review of the available literature and concluded there was no demonstrated clear link between silicone implants and any systemic illness. There have been studies of many different sizes and design to look at the safety of breast implants themselves. These have looked at specific autoimmune disorders and diseases. These studies show little to no links between breast implants and any disease. Studies of patients who have symptoms that they have related to their breast implants have not shown consistent laboratory abnormalities to define a distinct syndrome. To date, there has been very little in the way of research into this entity that has been labelled Breast Implant Illness (BII) by women with breast implants.

What is BII?

58 / Our City Weston / July 2021 / OurCityMedia.com

By Charles A. Messa, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Does implant removal improve the patient’s symptoms or cure a patient who has a medically diagnosed disease entity like an autoimmune disease?

Various studies show different degrees of improvement in patient symptoms after removal of their breast implants, some of which are temporary, and some showing permanent resolution of symptoms. There are no studies which specifically show which symptoms may or may not improve with implant removal with or without capsulectomy. There is no current definitive epidemiological evidence to support a direct link between breast implants and any specific disease process. There are many factors that can affect the interaction between a patient and her breast implants. Further study is required to determine the best way to potentially screen patients prior to breast implant surgery and to determine which of the multitude of reported symptoms might improve with implant and capsule removal. A lack of a direct, proven scientific link does not mean that the symptoms experienced by these patients are not real. Some patients have legitimate concerns about a potential link between breast implants and symptoms. For individuals who have breast implants and complains of Breast Implant Illness (BII) symptoms options can include: further medical workup with or without the consultation of a rheumatologist, observation without medical workup, implant removal without capsulectomy, exchange with or without capsulectomy, removal with total capsulectomy, or removal with en bloc capsulectomy. As there is no definitive link between the often subjective and divergent list of symptoms, and no means for testing, there is no ‘known’ risk. Many of the symptoms described by breast implant patients are experienced by the general public on a regular basis with or without implants. There are many medical inaccuracies perpetuated by the internet. BII patients tend to believe that a total capsulectomy is necessary to remove all causative agents and they prefer it en bloc, oftentimes without having a full understanding of what size incision is necessary for en bloc. If a patient wishes to undergo capsulectomy, it is important to explain that it is not always possible to remove all of the capsule. Sometimes a portion of the capsule must be left behind or is disintegrated with the use of electrocautery to prevent significant damage

to muscle, rib or lung. If a patient had an axillary approach or periareolar approach for breast implant placement, an en bloc capsulectomy cannot be performed through those incisions. It is recommended to reinforce that there are increased surgical risks associated with en bloc capsulectomy which requires a complete dissection of all the tissues surrounding the breast implant and, that we do not have enough collective data to guarantee any improvement in their symptoms they have labelled Breast Implant Illness (BII).

What a difficult question to answer. If we are pushing them we are forcing them to do something we want them to do or achieve but if we are encouraging them, we are actually supporting them through their growth process. When we encourage them we provide them the confidence and tools to do or achieve their goals successfully. As a mom of 3, I have thought a lot about the difference between pushing and encouraging and the feedback I have received from both methods. I think about whether my reason for pushing them in the past was out of my own fear of failures. I have observed as a mom and educator that the reaction from an encouraging word or action, has led to a more successful strategy. As parents we want “the best of the best” for our kids: we want excellent grades, best performance in sports, music, art, or any extracurricular program they are involved in, but is all this pressure and pushing really healthy and necessary? From birth, children are exposed to a competitive and demanding world and sometimes we seem to forget that they are just kids that want to learn, explore and discover, create, feel safe and loved in a healthy and fun environment How do we balance preparing them for an excellent future but at the same time let them enjoy the process and be really happy doing what they love? Right now I do not have all the answers myself from my personal trials and errors as a parent and educator, I can assure you that what kids want and need the most is a ton of love and encouragement. They want us to listen to them, this is the best way to identify and understand what our children want, what their strengths and weaknesses are and encourage them to go forward always trying their best. My eldest son is currently a Senior at Cypress Bay High School, my husband and I have tried to teach him the importance of core values in life and we encourage great academic education and of course, we have loved infinitely and remind him every day about that. We hope for him to have a great future, but most importantly, we encourage him to become his very best version of himself and enjoy the process along the way.

July is UV Safety Month

I

t turns out UV radiation can pose a danger to your eyes, year-round, both outdoors from the sun and inside from artificial sources—welding machines included. That's why it’s so important to take daily precautions against the negative effects of overexposure. If your eyes are exposed to excessive amounts of UV radiation over a short period of time, you will likely experience photokeratitis. Like a “sunburn of the eye,” photokeratitis can be painful, with symptoms including red eyes, a foreign body sensation or a gritty feeling in the eyes, extreme sensitivity to light and excessive tearing. Fortunately, these symptoms are usually temporary and rarely cause permanent damage to the eyes. The longer the eyes are exposed to solar radiation, the greater the risk for developing cataracts, eye cancer, pterygium or macular degeneration later in life. It is not clear how much exposure to solar radiation will cause damage. So whenever you spend time outdoors, wear

To provide adequate protection for your eyes, sunglasses should:

lenses that are gray for proper color ▸ Have recognition. If you participate in potentially eye hazardous outdoor work or sports, your sunglass lenses should be made from polycarbonate or Trivex material. These lenses provide the most impact resistance. If you spend a lot of time outdoors in bright sunlight, consider wearing wrap around frames for additional protection from the harmful solar radiation. Don’t forget protection for children and teenage. They typically spend more time in the sun than adults. Also, certain contact lenses

alcan provide additional UV protection, which is why it is so important to visit your optometrist when renewing your prescription—to ensure your contacts are the right fit for your lifestyle and level of sun exposure, which is something that so-called “online vision tests” cannot provide.

Don’t forget indoor risks Artificial sources of UV light such as welding machines, tanning beds and lasers can also pose serious eye health issues. As part of your annual comprehensive eye exam, be sure to talk to your doctor of optometry about any indoor risks as well as your outdoor activities in all seasons so that your level of UV exposure can be assessed and the appropriate UV absorbing glasses and/or contact lenses prescribed for your individual needs and ongoing protection.

Great Putting Tips to Build Confidence

& to Lower Your Score By By Dean Sklar, PGA Professional

G

ood putting requires complete conviction. Here’s a simple drill to inspire confidence for holing more putts. It’s also a good lesson for beginners to get a feel for the ball going in the hole. Start by holing a one-foot putt. Then increase the distance by one foot until you miss: go to two feet, three feet and so on. See how far back you can go until you miss. When you do miss, start over at the one-foot distance. Try it on breaking putts as well as uphill and downhill putts. If you get out to eight feet without missing, pat yourself on the back. If you’re struggling to get past two or three feet, try to clear your mind of too many thoughts, and just concentrate on making a firm, decisive stroke—accelerating the putter head through the ball. The more shots you make, the more confident you’ll be when you leave the practice green.

Next, when you stroke the putt, keep your head down for a count of at least one second after the ball is gone. You might want to think to yourself one-thousand one before looking up, especially on a must-make putt. You would be surprised how often these two fundamentals are neglected. But sticking to them will make you a better putter.

Get Low and Keep Your Eyes Level on Long Putts

Have you ever had the feeling you’re going to make a long putt—and then made it? Sometimes you’re unsure of how a putt will break, but you still have to pick a line and stroke the ball on that line with assurance. Check a putt from behind the hole, from the side, and finally from behind the ball. I try to get as low as I can and keep my eyes level. The No. 1 reason for missing putts is poor alignment of the putter face. I would always want to visualize not only seeing the line but build confidence in my mind of seeing the Make Center Contact and Keep ball rolling into the hole. That’s why Your Head Down visualizing the ball tracking on your line will improve your chances of Short putts are all too easy to making a putt. miss, at any level of the game. SAFETY CORNER

A

Fire Safety Away from Home

s more and more families expand travel plans throughout the summer, Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue in Weston wants to remind families about considering fire safety away from home. Wherever you travel, it’s important to have a plan in place to help keep you safe in the event of a fire. Knowing a few essential safety tips can help keep your family safe. A good fire escape plan should always include two ways out, a designated meeting place, and someone to call 9-1-1 or a local emergency number. While staying in a hotel, motel, or short-term rental, always choose one that is protected by smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, and fire sprinklers. If you are hearing impared, ask for a room equipped with a light strobe smoke alarm and accessories that will alert you in the event of a fire. Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the posted evacuation plan in your room. A fun game to help better prepare your family is to count the number of doors from your room to the nearest fire exit.

By Weston District Fire Chief Todd Draizin

If you encounter a situation that requires you to exit through smoke, crawl low and go to the nearest exit, knowing how many doors will help. Once outside, stay at your designated meeting place and call 9-1-1. If staying in peer-to-peer accommodations, be sure there are working smoke alarms inside and outside of each sleeping area and on every level of the home. Review the homes posted floor plan and identify two ways out of every room. Be sure all doors/windows leading outside can be opened and select an outside meeting place. Pathways should be free of tripping hazards, and exits should not be blocked. Electrical outlets should not be overloaded, and stovetops should be clear and free of anything that can catch fire. Designate any smoking areas away from the structure and check for the availability of portable fire extinguishers. While traveling to places of public assembly, always consider a few important safety tips. Be sure to identify all possible exits from the building and ensure they are clear and accessible for emergency exit. If you notice any barriers to exit, be sure to

notify management immediately. Establish a communication plan if you are separated from family/friends and designate a meeting place in advance. If the building appears to be overcrowded or you feel unsafe, leave immediately. In the event of an emergency, react immediately. Get out, stay out and call 9-1-1. If traveling by car, consider these tips to help keep you safe. Always have vehicles serviced by qualified mechanics regularly and in advance of any travel. If you experience a fire emergency while driving, pull over as safely as possible, turn off the engine, get everyone out of the car, move at least 100 feet safely away from the vehicle, and don’t forget to call 9-1-1. If you transport gasoline in your vehicle, transport only a small amount in a certified, sealed gas container. Be sure not to store gas cans in the passenger area of the vehicle and leave windows open for ventilation.

For more information on summer travel safety, join us for a virtual presentation on July 12th at 3:00 pm. Registration is available at bsofirerescuepubliceducation.as.me

THE DONOWAY CENTER New Clinical Trial Available Now for Patients with Advanced & Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer

Are you, or someone you know, being treated for Advanced or Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer with chemotherapy alone? Contact Dr. Robert Donoway at Atlas Oncology in Hollywood, Florida. Dr. Donoway is leading a new clinical trial using multi-modality therapy: combining Pancreatic Nanoknife Ablation with chemoimmuno-radiotherapy to treat advanced stage cancer patients from around the world. With over 35 years of experience performing pancreatic surgery in South Florida, Dr. Donoway recognized that, because of its late diagnosis, up to 85% of the patients treated with surgery for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease. This fact limits the benefit a patient might get from the Whipple surgery. Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating Nanoknife surgery with chemotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially compared to chemotherapy alone. Dr. Donoway has been a pioneer in the use of Pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex advanced cases. During the past decade, he remains the only surgical oncologist performing the procedure in South Florida. Patients from around the globe have traveled to benefit from this ground-breaking treatment, which is

FDA approved. Dr. Donoway also treats other advanced cancers, such as liver, breast, and sarcomas, using Nanoknife surgery. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating pancreatic cancer. The treatment has remained largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 9-10% five-year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, all we’re doing is confirming Einstein’s definition of Insanity.” Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over eight years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” Dr. Donoway will be presenting the long-term results of his pancreatic treatment paradigm for advanced and metastatic disease later this fall at an International cancer society in Europe For more information about Dr. Donoway and the PancreaticIRE/NanoKnife Program and clinical trials call 305-682-1995 and visit www.AtlasOncology.com.

ANIMAL HEALTH

EXERCISING YOUR DOG By Miguel E. Cordova, DV

Benefits

Exercise can have many health benefits for your dog. Regular exercise burns calories, reduces appetite, improves muscle tone, increases metabolism, and improves temperature regulation. It can be a valuable contributor to weight loss and maintenance. Exercise can also help stimulate your dog’s mind, thereby preventing boredom and destructive behaviors.

Needs and Precautions

Individual exercise needs vary based on breed or breed mix, sex, age, and level of health. If your dog is a 6- to 18-month adolescent or a sporting, herding, hound, or terrier breed or mixed breed, your dog’s exercise requirements are high. However, strenuous exercise can cause problems in some dogs, especially those that are not fit or are very young or old. Athletic owners should consider this to avoid overexerting their dogs, especially in hot or humid weather. When starting a new exercise routine, go slowly for the first week to give your dog a chance to adapt to it. On hot or cold days, go easy or rest. Consult your

veterinarian before beginning an exercise program for your dog.

ensure that your dog gets plenty of exercise throughout the day.

Get Moving

Low-Calorie Dog Treats

Various kinds of exercise can help satisfy your dog's instinctive urges to dig, herd, chew, retrieve, and chase. Here are some good exercise options for most dogs:

or jogging ▸ Walking ▸ Fetch with other pets ▸ Playing Running ▸ Swimmingoff-leash (great for arthritic dogs) ▸ Tricks for low-calorie treats (see the box ▸ for ideas) Tug of war if appropriate for your breed ▸ You can help your dog get plenty of

exercise by scheduling regular playtimes and walks. For walks, work up to a brisk, 10- to 20-minute walk or jog once or twice a day. If you don’t have time to walk your dog, hire a dog walker. Consider adopting another pet so that your dog has a playmate that encourages activity. If you don’t want to commit to a new pet, try scheduling regular visits with the pet of a friend or relative. Doggy day care centers can also help

slices ▸ Apple slices ▸ Banana slices ▸ Carrot dog treats (low-calorie or ▸ Commercial formulated for a smaller dog) beans ▸ Green Lean meat (cooked) ▸ Popcorn (without butter or oil) ▸ Unflavored rice cake pieces ▸ If your dog has food allergies, consult your veterinarian about which treats are safe and appropriate. Do not feed your dog (or cat) grapes or raisins because they have reportedly caused kidney problems in pets.

LEGALLY SPEAKING

THE APPELLATE PROCESS

O

AWARDED 11 YEARS

By Evan H. Baron, Esq.

ne of the most misunderstood aspects of the law is the Appeal. Everyone has heard the term, but most people don’t really understand what the process entails. Although everyone technically has the right to appeal a lower court’s decision, only under limited circumstances will the filing of an appeal be valid. Appeals in Florida are filed with the District Courts of Appeal. There are 5 District Courts of Appeal, which cover the entire state. In Broward County appeals are filed in the 4th District Court of Appeal which is physically located in Palm Beach County. Cases that are appealed in Miami Dade County would be appealed to the 3rd District Court of Appeal, which is located in Miami Dade County. There are certain deadlines which must be followed in order to file an appeal. An appeal must be filed within 30 days of the date that a final order is signed by the Court. I sometimes get individuals who call me to inquire about an appeal from an order signed 6 months before. Unfortunately I must inform that they missed the deadline and so the order in question has now become final. Except under limited circumstances only final orders can be appealed. If a judge rules unfavorably in a matter during a hearing, that ruling cannot usually be appealed until a final order is signed. An appeal is not a re-trial of the case. An appeal does not require witnesses to come to court and give testimony all over again. It is not a “DO OVER”. In an appeal you are asking a three judge panel to review the lower courts decisions to determine if there were any errors of law. If a judge does not allow certain testimony or evidence to be introduced into a trial, that may be an error of law and can be appealed. If a judge listens to testimony and does not believe a witness, that is a matter of credibility and cannot be appealed. As you can see, the process is very technical in nature. Only issues which are preserved can be appealed. If in a divorce, the couple voluntarily enters into a Marital Settlement Agreement, neither one can subsequently file an appeal, since an Agreement was reached. Such an agreement is binding upon the parties. If however, the parties do not reach an Agreement, and a Judge issues a Final Judgment, either party may file an appeal and question the Court’s ruling. Statistics show that only a very small percentage of appeals are in fact granted. In most instances, if an appeal is granted; the case is sent back to the trial court for further proceedings; consistent with the Appellate Court’s ruling. There generally is no time limit for an Appellate Court to decide and waiting 12 months for a decision is not all that unusual. I strongly suggest that if you are considering an appeal, make sure you are within your 30-day window and hire an attorney.

Cypress Bay High School Army JROTC Team to Compete in Nationals By Nick Jaillet

C

ypress Bay High School has earned a spot at the 2021 U.S. Army JROTC National Leadership and Academic Bowl Championship in Washington, D.C. this summer. The Lightning will be joined by fellow Broward County Public County High Schools, Miramar High School, and West Broward High School at the annual event. During two phases of preliminary online competitions, the cadets were tested on their knowledge of current events, leadership values, and leadership skills. The JROTC teams earned top scores out of the 1,511 Army JROTC leadership and academic teams competing from around the world and are three of only 40 teams to advance to the finals, which includes an all-expense-paid trip to the championship event, from July 19 – 23, 2021, on the campus of The Catholic University of America. The JROTC Leadership and Academic Bowl is a nationally recognized competition created exclusively for JROTC students. By participating, cadets learn the values of citizenship, academic competition, and explore college opportunities, while demonstrating their leadership abilities. The winner of the U.S. Army JROTC Leadership and Academic Bowl Championship will compete against winning teams from the U.S. Air Force, Marine Corps, and Navy in the JROTC Joint Service Leadership and Academic Bowl Championship. The event is sponsored by the U.S. Army Cadet Command and is conducted by the College Options Foundation. One of the main goals is to prepare students for state graduation exams as well as college entrance exams, such as the SAT and ACT.

“Escape to Tropical Paradise”

F

ort Lauderdale, Fla. (May 14, 2021) – With fire and hula dancers, live island music, tropical flora, Tiki gods, a monsoon downpour followed by a colorful rainbow arching through the skyline, it certainly was not just another day as paradise as Broward Education Foundation hosted its annual signature event, BrightStar Credit Union’s at the Harbor Beach Marriott in Fort Lauderdale. As last year’s signature event was cancelled due to the pandemic, Broward Education Foundation reimagined the annual themed fundraiser and hosted a spectacular socially distanced outdoor/ indoor event, following CDC guidelines and adhering to local safety protocols. Each guest received a lovely custom-crafted tropical print facemask and hand sanitizer upon arrival. Embracing the theme, guests donned their best resort wear and bright floral prints while sipping drinks and enjoying balmy breezes against a stunning oceanfront backdrop. During the open-air sunset reception, a highlight was the thunder of drums and the breathtaking “fire knife” performance by Drums of Polynesian. Lured by the “call of the conch,” guests enjoyed tropical themed photo stations throughout the spacious ballroom which included larger than life Tiki statues and surfboards, all to raise awareness of and funds for the only 501(c)3 organization solely dedicated to helping students and teachers in Broward County Public Schools. After a sumptuous dinner and dessert, Drums of Polynesia once again invoked far-away lands with a series of beautiful, spirited and interactive Polynesian dances that proved guests’ dancing prowess. “After more than a year apart, this was an outstanding night which allowed our guests to safely gather and celebrate the incredible achievements and accomplishments in public education in Broward County,” said Dustin Jacobs, vice president of marketing 78 / Our City Weston / July 2021 / OurCityMedia.com

for BrightStar Credit Union and Broward Education Foundation board treasurer. He continued, “BrightStar Credit Union is a proud Broward Education Foundation legacy partner in serving students and teachers in Broward Schools for 37 years.” Proceeds benefit Broward Education Foundation’s transformational programs and initiatives for students and teachers in Broward County Public Schools. Core focus areas include innovative teaching grants for curriculum development to advance Pre K-12 achievement; school supplies for Title I students and teachers; scholarships for qualified high school seniors, and support of district initiatives the Debate, Chess, TurnAround Arts and more. Each year, the Foundation contributes more than $3 million to Broward County schools, serving as the catalyst for educational excellence. “Our team went above and beyond this year to ensure our guests were able to experience some normalcy and enjoy a fun, socially distanced escape after an extremely challenging year,” said Shea Ciriago, CEO of Broward Education Foundation. “A heartfelt ‘mahalo’ to our loyal corporate partners, business leaders and community donors who continue to support the vital role that we play in shaping the future of our students.” Escape to Tropical Paradise was made possible through the generous support of Title Partner BrightStar Credit Union, Heart of Broward award winner Office Depot, Big Kahuna Auction Partner Broward Teachers Union, Gallagher Insurance, Humana, Johns Eastern Claim Adjusters, Memorial Healthcare System, Nova Southeastern University, Wells Fargo and UKG. Additional partners include Ballard Partners, Broward County Public Schools Department of Applied Learning, Crain Atlantis Architects & Engineers, Funky Buddha Brewery, Hazel Health, Kelly Kronenberg, PNC Bank, Rick Case Automotive, S1 Medical, Total Wine & More and Dr. Valerie Smith-Wanza.

About Broward Education Foundation: The nonprofit Broward Education Foundation aligns with Broward County Public Schools by providing grants for teachers who develop innovative curriculum that increases student outcomes; vitally needed school supplies for students and teachers in Title I schools; scholarships for qualified high school seniors; and support for programs and initiatives like Debate, Scholastic Chess, TurnAround Arts, STEM and more. Each year, Broward Education Foundation contributes more than $3 million to Broward County schools, serving as the catalyst for educational excellence. Responding to the Stoneman Douglas High School tragedy in 2018, Broward Education Foundation initiated a GoFundMe, established the official Stoneman Douglas Victims’ Fund and raised $10.5M for victims’ families, survivors and those impacted. Broward Education Foundation was awarded the 2018 President’s Award from the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Fort Lauderdale/Broward Chapter for these fundraising efforts.
