Celebrate Local Culture

Ponce de Leon, the famed explorer, laid claim to Florida for Spain when he discovered it in 1513. Even after five centuries, Florida continues to be a home for settlers from Spanish-speaking nations. Broward County’s population is nearly 30% Hispanic, and in Miami Dade, the figure rises to almost 70%. This significant Hispanic presence lends a special resonance to National Hispanic Heritage Month in South Florida.

Observed from September 15th to October 15th, is a festive occasion that honors the history, culture, and contributions of American citizens with roots in Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. The month is filled with various events and celebrations, such as the Festival de la Salsa 3 at Miramar Regional Park on September 9th, and the Hispanic Heritage Month Festival at the Pembroke Pines Branch Library on October 6th. These events will feature food, music, crafts, and storytelling, reflecting the rich cultural heritage.

For those looking to immerse themselves in the local culture, Our City magazine’s calendar section is an invaluable resource. Each month, the magazine includes a handpicked list of diverse community activities and events that cater to a broad spectrum of tastes and interests. By engaging with these events, you can truly experience the unique cultural offerings of the region.

ENDOVENOUS LASER ABLATION (EVLA/EVLT)

Endovenous Laser Ablation is one of the most effective treatments for large varicose veins with a 98–100 percent success rate. It involves inserting a thin laser fiber through the affected vein; there are no incisions and thus leaves no scars. Tiny pulses of laser energy are delivered as the fiber is pulled through the vein, gently heating it and causing it to collapse and seal shut. The insufficient veins become shrunken scars that fade over time. These procedures take less than a 30-minutes with little to no downtime afterward.

VARITHENA®

Varithena® is ideal for smaller, less obtrusive veins. It uses foam sclerotherapy and is a safe and effective vein removal technique. During traditional sclerotherapy, a solution is injected directly into the affected veins. While you may feel a pinch at the injection site, foam sclerotherapy isn’t painful. We perform it under ultrasound guidance and direct the foam into the problematic veins watching everything along the way. The person has no downtime, usually minimal to no pain, and only needs to stay active and wear a compression hose afterward.

AMBULATORY PHLEBECTOMY

Ambulatory Phlebectomy is a surgical approach to removing larger and more troublesome veins. It is often an in-office procedure that requires a local anesthetic. The veins are teased out through the tiny holes without causing any significant scarring. Most people return to normal activities immediately afterward without much recovery time.

SPIDER VEIN REMOVAL

Spider Veins Removal is deemed cosmetic even though they may cause symptoms. There are a couple of treatment options. We can use sclerotherapy, where a solution is injected into the vein with a tiny needle. The vein lining gets irritated and gradually seals shut, closing the vein over several weeks. It may take several sessions for all of the veins to go away. There is also a cutaneous laser option if you prefer. The laser uses light pulses to heat the vein and scar them shut. For the tiny and unsightly facial veins or tiny red veins, we also have a machine called the VeinGogh. It uses energy microbursts to close tiny veins without any downtime or scarring. This procedure seals the small veins over a few days to weeks and can be done in a few sessions with excellent results.

Labor Day

Labor Day is a commemoration of the American labor movement and the invaluable contributions made by laborers to the growth and success of the United States. Back in 1894, President Grover Cleveland officially established this holiday by signing it into law. It serves as a significant milestone, signaling the end of summer and the start of the new school year. In South Florida, where the weather becomes more temperate, Labor Day offers a wonderful opportunity to gather with loved ones and friends, making it a perfect time for bonding and enjoying each other's company.

This exhibit showcases a variety of digital and video artworks by selected artists from around the globe, which creatively address and/ or relate to the theme based on the psychological term of the same name. The Elastic Mind refers to the ability to think non-linearly and be fluid to survive in times of rapid change and uncertainty. Hosted at the South Gallery at the Judson A. A Sizzling Summer Success

On Thursday, July 27, at the Bonaventure Town Center Club, the Weston Music Society presented “Pops Goes the Symphony” featuring the Martin Hand Jazz Quintet of the Symphony of the Americas. Approximately 120 attendees braved the untimely downpour and were treated to a truly memorable program.

Toby Feuer, Co-Vice President of Events, commented, “Thank you to our jazz enthusiasts for braving the stormy weather to attend the Pops Concert. We appreciate your patronage.”

Leader of the Jazz Ensemble is guitarist and vocalist Martin Hand. In 2013, he was appointed Music Director of the Gold Coast Jazz Society. He has worked with such artists as Henry Mancini, Burt Bacharach, Arturo Sandoval, The Supremes and many others. Born in England, he was influenced by the Beatles and, on arrival in the United States, was further influenced by Motown,

rock, standards and show tunes. Included in the program were “Sweet Lorraine” and “Come Rain or Come Shine”. The finale, “Birdland”, brought the crowd to its feet, cheering the musicians.

A special feature of the evening was that during intermission, tenor Christian Garcia and soprano Shelzie Ramos from the Olga Iglesias Project in Puerto Rico strolled around the room treating the crowd to popular songs including “Tu y Yo”, Preciosa”, and “Majestad Negra”’

Co-Vice President of Events Diane Marett summed it up, commenting, “It was a pleasure to bring this level of professional entertainment to Weston. It was a wonderful evening enjoyed by a very appreciative audience!”

Arts Council of Greater Weston Laura Dobrzanski was presented with the prestigious Weston Music Society Platinum Circle Award for Service to the Arts. Laura, who

also serves on the Boards of the Rotary Club of Weston and the Weston YMCA, has worked tirelessly to enhance the quality of life of our award-winning community, notably in ensuring we have outstanding community events. Weston is privileged to have such a dedicated volunteer.

HOW TO SECURE THE WELLBEING OF OUR CHILDREN

Raising our children continues after the first 18 years! We want to ensure our values are instilled in them for their entire lives. Establishing an estate plan becomes of paramount importance when minor children or grandchildren are involved. While finding the time during our busy lives may be challenging, having a well-thought-out and carefully drafted plan is essential! Trusts offer a unique opportunity to leave a lasting impact on our children's lives. Here are three types of trusts designed to address different goals and priorities for safeguarding the future of minor children and grandchildren.

1. Education and Health Exclusion Trust:

Education is a crucial stepping stone to our children's success, and some funds stored away in a trust can make a significant difference. Grandparents can set aside funds specifically designated for their grandchildren's educational and healthcare needs.

According to the US Treasury Regulations, a trust can pay for tuition costs for a formal educational institution. Grandparents can avoid quite a bit of tax liability on funds transferred to the trust. Further, gift tax liability can be avoided on funds disbursed as qualified transfers directly to the educational institution or medical provider.

As a parent to two young adults, I can attest that a "529 Plan" also has distinct advantages for a parent to help with educational costs. A 529 plan is a tax-advantaged savings plan and comes in two types: prepaid tuition plans and education savings plans.

2. Incentive Trusts:

How likely are children to do the dishes, walk the dog, clean their room, or offer to cook dinner? How much does the likelihood increase when they are offered money to complete these tasks? Most parents would agree that incentivizing young children works like magic. How surprised would you be to learn that even if you are not around, you can continue to guide and motivate your children by incentivizing them from beyond the grave?

Incentive trusts provide parents with the flexibility to set goals and appropriate rewards through distributions once a child reaches the goal. Parents can set multiple and separate goals for each child.

There are a variety of goals that can be addressed with incentive trusts, such as higher education, receiving good grades, starting a business, and maintaining a paying job. As you can imagine, these goals are best defined by you; who knows your children's abilities and limitations.

3. Beneficiary-Controlled Trust:

A beneficiary-controlled trust offers an appealing option for those who believe their children are financially responsible and exercise good judgment. This trust structure minimizes the risks associated with outside control while allowing your children to have some influence over their inheritance.

The advantage of a beneficiary-controlled trust is that it grants the beneficiary significant control over their inheritance while still imposing certain restrictions on its usage with distributions based on a standard, such as health, education, maintenance, and support (HEMS). This safeguard prevents most creditors from reaching the beneficiary's interest in the trust. However, once a distribution is made, it becomes susceptible to the beneficiary's creditors.

When planning for the future of your family, it is essential to work with a qualified estate planning professional. They can analyze your unique situation, discuss your goals thoroughly, and craft a comprehensive plan that safeguards the future of both you and your loved ones.

SHOEBOXES OF HOPE: South Florida’s Back-to-School Mission for the World

As the school year approaches, shoebox packers are making use of backto-school prices to purchase gifts and essential items for children in need around the world. Residents in Weston are collecting school supplies, along with personal care items and fun toys, to pack in shoeboxes. Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse, will deliver these gift-filled shoeboxes to children in more than 100 countries.

For many children, access to these simple items is essential to an education. This was the case for Justin Thomas, a shoebox recipient in Southeast Asia whose parents could not afford the supplies needed for school. Thomas remembers the specific day he received a gift-filled shoebox from Operation Christmas Child and found it filled with toys and most exciting to him—school supplies!

Growing up with hand-me-down clothes and used items, Thomas used to write with a pencil so short that he held it using a pen cap. Having an entire packet of new pencils and a pencil sharpener all his own was a treasure to him. This simple gift made a life-changing impact for Thomas because it opened the doors for him to receive an education.

For more information, visit samaritanspurse.org/occ. National Collection Week is Nov. 13-20. Participants can donate $10 per shoebox gift online through “Follow Your Box” and receive a tracking label to discover its destination. Those who prefer the convenience of online shopping can browse samaritanspurse.org/buildonline to select gifts matched to a child’s specific age and gender, then finish packing the virtual shoebox by adding a photo and personal note of encouragement.

Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan's Purse, seeks to demonstrate God’s love in a tangible way to children in need around the world and, together with the local church worldwide, to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child has collected and delivered more than 209 million giftfilled shoeboxes to children in more than 170 countries and territories. This year, Operation Christmas Child will celebrate its 30th year of ministry!

ArtServe's Tribute to Veterans: An Exhibit Rooted in History and Heroism

the Tuskeegee Airman Major Leo Gray and shared various artifacts illustrating the heroic contributions of Gray’s fellow African American military bomber pilots and airmen who fought in World War II.

With an Honor Guard welcome by the Fort Lauderdale Navy League Sea Cadets who in turn were saluted by a standing-roomonly crowd in attendance, ArtServe opened its new art show on July 21, 2023 titled “Veterans’ Exhibit—a Family Perspective,” featuring over 50 artworks by distinguished local artists like George Gadson and Marilyn Johansen.

The evening coincided with the 93rd Anniversary of the creation of the U.S. Department of Veterans Administration, an act that forever changed how Americans cared for our veterans after their active service was completed. The ArtServe exhibit’s theme of caring for veterans also underscored imperatives in the June 9, 2023 presidential executive order on “Advancing Economic Security for Military and Veteran Spouses, Military Caregivers, and Survivors.”

The “Veterans’ Exhibit” opening night reception began with a panel discussion on veterans’ challenges as they transition back into civilian life. Speakers included VIP military veterans Brig. Gen. Richard Dix; Mission United co-founder Stephen Moss, a Vietnam veteran; Broward County Veterans Services Director Owen Walker; and foreign affairs advisor Duilia Turner, a former Air Force Lieutenant Colonel who served as Chief of Women, Peace, and Security at U.S. Southern Command. Moderated by Mission United director James Heaton, each panelist discussed his or her own transition from military life.

Along with the panel, the evening featured several presentations, including:

Retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel Thaddeus Hamilton, who talked about

Artist George Gadson, who focuses his work on restoring the forgotten history found in many communities and capturing their civic memories through creative design works for public spaces, presented his sculpture of a Buffalo Soldier, which is on loan to ArtServe throughout the Veterans’ exhibit.

“Buffalo Soldiers” were formerly enslaved African-American United States Army regiments formed during the 19th century to serve on the American frontier. Because they often wore buffalo skins to stay warm, they became known as “Buffalo Soldiers.”

Artist Marilyn Johansen presented her portrait of Ed Morse—a decorated lieutenant and aviator in World War II who founded the now-national Ed Morse Automotive Group in 1946—to his grandson, Teddy, who was in attendance.

“Veterans’ Exhibition: A Family Perspective” is now open to the public from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays until Monday, September 11. Admission is always free. ArtServe is located at 1350 E. Sunrise Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale.

ArtServe inspires, supports and advances its diverse members, artists and the community by promoting artistic development, education and prosperity through the exploration and presentation of the visual and performing arts.

Fort Lauderdale-based ArtServe is an award-winning arts incubator that is advancing the arts for social good as a creative laboratory and hub for experimental artists committed to diversity, equity and inclusion. Now in its 35th year, ArtServe has won several awards for innovation in the arts and is supported in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council and Florida’s Department of State and the Division of Cultural Affairs.

COMPREHENSIVE EYE EXAMS PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT FOR CLASSROOM SUCCESS

ood vision is critical for many classroom tasks - from reading books or seeing a whiteboard to viewing a computer screen. Without healthy vision, students can face unnecessary challenges not only in the classroom but also to their mental, physical, social and emotional well-being.

A comprehensive eye examination for students is one of the most important “to-dos” as children head back to school, and yet it is often overlooked. Without an eye exam, many children will suffer from undetected vision problems, and some may even be misdiagnosed as having a learning disorder.

Millions of school children in America have vision conditions that can negatively

Geye exams are necessary to detect problems that a simple screening can miss, such as eye coordination, moderate amounts of farsightedness and astigmatism.

According to the American Optometric Association (AOA), vision screenings are not diagnostic, and therefore, typically identify only a small portion of the vision problems in children. During a comprehensive eye exam, a doctor of optometry will also check not just the child’s visual acuity, but how well the eyes work together as a team, focusing ability, visual alignment, eye tracking skills, and color vision, as well as the overall health of the eyes.

The AOA recommends the following schedule for eye examinations for children:

• Infants should receive a comprehensive baseline eye exam between the ages of 6 and 12 months, immediately after the critical period when the eye undergoes

• Preschoolers should receive at least one in-person, comprehensive eye exam between the ages of 3 and 5 to prevent or diagnose any condition that may have long-term effects;

• School-aged children (6 to 18 years) should receive a comprehensive exam prior to entering the first grade and annually thereafter.

Early detection and treatment provide the very best opportunity to treat and correct vision problems to help children see clearly. Good vision doesn't just happen, a child's brain learns how to use eyes to see. The longer a vision problem goes undiagnosed and untreated, the more a child's brain has to overcompensate to live with the vision problem, instead of developing and learning normally.

DEDICATE SEPTEMBER TO REFLECTION AND RAISING AWARENESS OF SUICIDE PREVENTION

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and September 10 – 16, 2023 is National Suicide Prevention Week. Did you know… Suicide ranks as the 10th leading cause of death and is the second leading cause of death among adolescents and young adults aged 15-24. This is all in the face of increased attempts to die by suicide, incidents of self-harm, and increased levels of depression and anxiety. The impact of a death by suicide affects more than the individual who tragically dies including the family, friends, and even the first responders who respond to these calls.

When a person is experiencing challenges to their mental health, it is important they have the help, resources, and support necessary to guide them through. Please take a moment to reflect and know the warning signs of suicide. These signs include feelings of despair, hopelessness, loss of interest in things that used to give them joy, excessive drug/alcohol use, becomes withdrawn or isolates themselves, or recently experienced or sustained traumatic life events. The best way to find out if someone is experiencing suicidal thoughts is to ask them directly.

Mental health challenges can affect a person’s moods, behaviors, and even their cognitive functioning. The norm in some cultures may be to avoid talking about problems, feelings, or mental health concerns. While some individuals can have healthy coping mechanisms, many people often struggle to find proactive methods for their emotional turmoil or unresolved trauma. For any stressful situation, talk about the feelings you have, provide an open dialogue, and promote the fact that it is OK to talk about feelings of stress, isolation, and anxiety.

Help is here! United Way of Broward County partnered with the Broward Behavioral Health Coalition, and the Department of Children and Families to prioritize mental health struggles in its county-wide “It’s OK to not be OK” initiative and the 9-8-8 hotline. The goal

is to provide an outlet of support to the community facing challenges with mental health, or any feelings of stress, isolation, and anxiety.

Call the 9-8-8 hotline for support! Trained counselors provide each caller with guidance and free resources that will help in most situations.

Suicide prevention resources:

• Dial 9-8-8 if you or someone you know is having suicidal thoughts.

• The 211 Broward Crisis and Suicide Care Support – www.211-broward.org/ crisis-and-suicide-care

• United Way of Broward County’s Commission on Behavioral Health & Drug Prevention’s website, drugfreebroward.org, also provides a support and prevention resource center with tool kits that provide support for mental and behavioral health issues.

• Postvention Support for Suicide Survivors is available through the Local Outreach for Suicide Survivors (LOSS) Team and provides survivor support groups and a Purple Packet Resource Guide. For more information, please feel free to call: 954.746.2055 X134 or email LOSS@mhasefl.org

Jeff Conine’s accomplishments in major league baseball are significant -- twotime World Series champion, All-Star game MVP, and beloved “Mr. Marlin” to a generation of South Floridians -- but they may ultimately pale in comparison to the impact he is having in the world of philanthropy.

Conine has been an advocate for Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital for three decades and raised nearly $8 million to support its patients and families during that time. Most of that has underwritten expenses at the Conine Clubhouse, a

In recognition of his work with the nonprofit Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation, Conine, a longtime Weston resident, was recently inducted into the “Community Hall of Fame” by the Jason Taylor Foundation. The honor included a $10,000 donation by Taylor’s foundation to the Conine Clubhouse and the announcement by the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino that the DiMaggio foundation would be the beneficiary of its charitable efforts in August.

“It’s an honor for us to get a chance to honor (Jeff),” said Jason Taylor, whose foundation supports the personal growth and empowerment of South Florida children in need. “He’s very deserving, a great candidate for us, and really a great ambassador for South Florida in general.”

Taylor specifically cited the impact Conine has had through the Conine All-Star Golf Classic, an annual celebrity golf event that

will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2024. Presented by Custom Rod & Reel, it has included the likes of Dan Marino, Alonzo Mourning, and Lawrence Taylor and will take place January 22 at the Fort Lauderdale Country Club. Proceeds from the fundraiser are earmarked each year for use at the Conine Clubhouse. “Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital attracts patients from throughout Florida and families should remain close to children during treatment, as we did when our son was a baby,” said Conine, who co-hosts the golf tournament with his wife, Cindy. “We don’t want parents to have travel or financial burdens during what are already some of the most stressful times imaginable.”

FLAMINGO GARDENS WISHES BUDDY & JAMES HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Flamingo Gardens recently celebrated two fantastic fifth birthdays! Everglades Wildlife Sanctuary resident Buddy the Florida Panther turned five years old on July 4th while James the Flamingo turned five on August 2nd.

Buddy is a Florida panther, which is also known as a cougar or mountain lion He is a subspecies of puma that is found only in southern Florida. Panthers like Buddy are usually loners. They are solitary and elusive cast, adapted to the swamps and forests of our region. The Florida panther is critically endangered, with only a small population remaining in the wild.

Guests at Buddy’s party not only included his many fans but also Stanley C. Panther of the Florida Panthers’ Hockey Team!

James the Flamingo is the only Flamingo to have been hatched and raised at Flamingo Gardens. Guests sang “Happy Birthday” and presented James with two special “Shrimp Cakes” to celebrate. Flamingos are iconic birds known for their vibrant

pink plumage and distinctive long, slender necks. Flamingos used to be common in Florida but disappeared from the state around the turn of the 20th century. After about 1925, people started captive colonies of flamingos in South Florida.

Historically, there were native flamingo populations in Florida, particularly in the southern parts of the state and the Florida Keys. The American flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber) was present in these regions, but due to habitat destruction, hunting, and other factors, the native population of flamingos in Florida has significantly declined.

Today, the Caribbean and Central and South America are the primary habitats for wild populations of American flamingos. These birds thrive in shallow, saline or alkaline lagoons, estuaries, and coastal areas where they feed on algae, small invertebrates, and crustaceans. The distinctive pink color of their feathers is a result of the pigments in the food they consume.

Stairclimb & Fitness Challenge

During the month of September, the Rotary Club of Weston and BSO Weston are conducting a Stairclimb and Fitness Challenge to remembering our fallen heroes of September 11, 2001.

Most individuals younger than 25 years old will have no recollection of that fateful day. These Weston-based organizations are raising funds for first responders and veterans while keeping that tragic day at the forefront of the community’s mind.

All during the month of September, the Rotary Club of Weston, along with the YMCA Weston branch, BSO Weston, and other community fitness centers and firehouses will raise money for local veterans and first responders by urging participants to climb 110 stories, run 11 miles, or bike 110 miles (accumulated throughout the month).

There will be a special ceremony at the YMCA Weston on the morning of September 11th to commemorate the brave and fallen of that clear morning 22 years ago.

Those interested can sign up for the challenge and obtain pledges to help raise money for local charities supporting veterans and first responders. Registration will remain open through September 30, 2023. Sign up today!

ENGLISH PROFICIENCY & HEALTHCARE PRACTITIONERS

he Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) acknowledges the significant role of migrant doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals across various countries, notably in the USA. These professionals have become essential assets within the medical field. To ensure their effective integration, several policies have been established to assess their entry and recognition of their professional credentials (OECD, 2022). In specific regions of the United States such as New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Utah, physicians can obtain temporary emergency licenses, contingent upon passing an official English proficiency test (The Council of State Governments, 2022). While most international healthcare professionals are proficient in English, many find it necessary to enhance their interpersonal skills. U.S. immigration regulations require a language proficiency examination.

TDemonstrating precise English communication skills is crucial for practicing in an English-speaking nation. The Occupational English Test (OET) is the internationally recognized language assessment designed for healthcare professionals aiming to practice in an English-speaking environment. OET replicates real workplace scenarios and assesses relevant language proficiencies specific to various healthcare fields, including Dentistry, Dietetics, Medicine, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Optometry, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Podiatry, Radiography, Speech Pathology, and Veterinary Science.

The OET evaluation encompasses all aspects of language proficiency, encompassing Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking, with a particular emphasis on effective communication in healthcare settings. Its objective is to eliminate any limitations in English proficiency among foreign healthcare professionals. OET offers simulations of critical tasks and real-world situations to ensure patient safety and the delivery of high-quality care. The collaborative efforts of Cambridge Assessment

English, the Australian Research Council, and the University of Melbourne have established OET as a dependable tool for assessing English language skills. It empowers international healthcare professionals to communicate adeptly on both technical and emotional subjects.

Addressing the prevailing shortage of healthcare professionals in the USA, a pragmatic and immediate solution involves the proper recruitment of these professionals, a journey that numerous states have embarked upon. Their commitment is centered on delivering exceptional outcomes for both American and global patients.

THE DONOWAY CENTER

Pancreatic NanoKnife Tumor Ablation for Advanced and Oligo-Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer

Dr. Donoway is using multi-modality therapy combining Pancreatic NanoKnife Tumor Ablation with chemoimmuno-radio therapy to treat advanced-stage cancer patients worldwide after they have stopped responding to the standard of care therapy and have been left with few options for further treatment.

If you are being treated for advanced oroligometastatic pancreatic cancer, you may want to contact Dr. Robert Donoway at ATLAS ONCOLOGY in Hollywood, Florida.

With over 32 years of experience performing pancreatic surgery in south Florida, Dr. Donoway recognized that because of late diagnosis, up to 85% of patients treated for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease at the time of diagnosis. This fact limited the benefit many patients might receive from pancreatic surgery, which is problematic as surgery has long been held to be the only reproducible therapy for a cure. In reality, surgery is currently more likely Palliative in almost 80% of the cases. Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating NanoKnife surgery with chemotherapy and now supplemented with immunotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially when compared to chemotherapy alone.

Dr. Donoway has been a pioneer in using pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex cases. During the past decade, patients worldwide have traveled to benefit from this

groundbreaking treatment by Dr. Donoway, which is FDA-approved. Dr. Donoway also treats other advanced cancers, such as liver, Breast, and sarcomas, using NanoKnife Surgery based on its FDA-approved guidelines. Patients experience a brief recovery, which means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation much sooner.

Dr. Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating Pancreatic cancer. The treatment history has been largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 10% five-year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, we’re all confirming Einstein‘s definition of insanity.”

Dr. Donoway is involved in ongoing research in identifying the best chemo-immuno therapy and sequencing to be used along with Pancreatic nanoKnife/ IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “the results so far have been very encouraging, and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over nine years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE, they would have lived a little over a year, so this technique opens a new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.”

Dr. Donoway presented his results of pancreatic ablation at the recent annual meeting of the American Pancreatic Association. For more information about Dr. Donoway and the pancreatic IRE/NanoKnife program, call 954-986-6366 or visit www.atlasoncology.com.

BEYOND THE NOISE: CULTIVATING PEACE THROUGH MEDITATION

Now that Summer is almost over, let's talk about starting a meditation practice. Sometimes some things can’t be solved with more thinking or talking. One thing is for sure is that there is no need to complicate the process.

Here are some of the things you will need to start a meditation practice.

1. Space: This can be as small as a cushion sitting in front of a small table that can act as your sacred space. A few pictures, crystals, a candle, and a couple of books can sit on top.

2. Meditation cards: There are so many decks of cards, specifically oracle, angel or motivational decks can help align the day with message and meaning and intention. Where to find? Amazon.

3. Timer: Use any timer to help you stay accountable to a certain time. Instead of trying to meditate for 30 minutes right away, start in 5-minute increments and keep building from there. You need not be too hard on yourself. Don’t expect to quiet the mind any time soon.

4. Be Consistent. It’s really about setting time daily to just create some space for yourself. Even a few minutes can help. Big gains start with small commitments.

5. No excuses. You will make excuses because, you know, you're human. Just know that many avoid meditation because of thinking that they don’t have the time, are too restless, or even fear of facing thoughts and being resistant to change. Sorry, no excuses.

6. Benefits: Endless, starting with stress reduction, improved focus and concentration, emotional regulation, enhanced self-awareness, reduced anxiety, lower blood pressure, better sleep, increased patience and even pain management.

7. How do I begin: A journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step: Focus on one long breath at a time. A mantra might help you. The “SO HUM” mantra is a good start. When combined, the mantra "So Hum" can be interpreted as "I am that" or "I am Divine. Inhale "SO", exhale "HUM". Keep going….Slow Down. All said, meditation will eventually be a practice you will look forward to. I promise.

INVESTING IN OUR COMMUNITY

Investing in our community is paramount to public safety.

Children's Harbor is a non-profit organization that serves as a home for kids without a family and keeps foster siblings together. While caring for these at-risk youth, this organization also guides them toward independence, building academic success, life skills and confidence through mentorship programs. The foundational values of Children's Harbor are aligned with our own at the Broward Sheriff's Office, and we are honored to have a small hand in their success.

I am proud to say through our Law Enforcement Trust Fund (LETF) Program, BSO supports Children's Harbor and many community organizations like it. We choose these local non-profits on the merit of their mission to improve the

lives of Broward County residents. The money we award comes from the seizure and forfeiture of contraband used in the commission of a crime. State law allows us to use these funds to reinvest into charitable 501(c)3 organizations that benefit our community.

Under my administration, the LETF selection process has been elevated to become a fair and impartial process. All qualified organizations have the same opportunity to compete for funding, and funds are distributed equitably. This year, we had the great privilege of investing nearly $900,000 back into the community by funding 88 different programs for selected non-profit organizations.

As an agency, we understand community stability is a core variable of public safety. We must identify gaps and service needs within our community and connect our resources with organizations that can serve as a force multiplier

to have a greater impact throughout Broward County. Whether it's connecting with youth, providing crime prevention programming, mentorship opportunities, mental health assistance, veteran services, or academic development, we are committed to utilizing these LETF funds in a way that supports a thriving and prosperous community.

We will continue to evaluate and select new organizations whose mission is focused on the betterment of Broward County. To determine if your charitable organization is eligible to receive LETF funds or to learn more about the process, please visit sheriff.org or email LETF@sheriff.org.

Congratulations to this year's LETF recipients!

Service Equals Reward, Sheriff Gregory Tony

GROWING PAINS IN CHILDREN OR MERELY FLAT FEET?

Foot, ankle and leg problems in the growing child are often considered to be “Growing Pains” in the bone and muscles of the lower extremity. While in a small number of cases this might be true, in a majority of the cases the pains that plague these children and teenagers may be caused by lower extremity malalignment problems. Growing pains are often seen in children who are excessively flatfooted or whose feet point to the outside. Children may also appear very knock-kneed. Tight calf muscles can not only cause but significantly aggravate the pain that these children are experiencing, especially at night.

Leg pain is most commonly seen, especially at night after a long day of activity. Pain with activities, especially along the inside of the knee, lower leg, ankle and foot, may also be seen. This is often associated with a general avoidance of activities and sports and premature fatigue with many activities. Many children can also develop lower back pain.

Treatment is important early on. Changing a child’s shoe gear to add more support to the foot and ankle may provide immediate help. Avoiding barefoot and flat shoes is necessary. Custom molded orthotics (shoe inserts) will immediately help to realign the foot and the entire lower extremity. This will almost overnight eliminate the problem. Physical therapy may also help to decrease overall muscle tightness and to improve muscle strength and coordination. If the foot is flat and associated with tight calf muscles, stretching the calf muscles in a walking cast is critical to not only eliminate the problem but to prevent a recurrence. If the flatfoot deformity is severe, there is a small percentage of children that will benefit from a procedure to realign and “correct” the flatfoot.

An excellent prognosis is always seen when the cause is identified and the problem treated.

7th Annual Adaptive Sports & Recreation Bowl-A-Thon HOSTED BY MEMORIAL REHABILITATION INSTITUTE

On October 1st, the Memorial Rehabilitation Institute is set to host its 7th Annual Adaptive Sports and Recreation Bowl-A-Thon at Sparez Bowling in Davie. Scheduled from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, this annual event supports the invaluable Memorial Rehab Adaptive Sports and Recreation Program.

The program's mission is clear and noble: to provide recreational and athletic experiences specifically tailored for individuals with physical disabilities across all age groups.

The previous year's event witnessed tremendous participation, with over 300 individuals joining and the generous backing of 5 sponsors. Together, they raised an impressive $20,000. Participants can expect to be part of a 7-member team, enjoying two hours of spirited bowling. Registration covers bowling, shoes, pizza, soft drinks, and undoubtedly, memories that will stand the test of time.

The funds accumulated during this event have a significant impact. In the past year, they have supported initiatives such as adaptive water aerobics, chair yoga, scuba diving, wheelchair basketball, and tennis. Furthermore, the funds cater to various needs including access, transportation, entry fees, and sponsorships for the adaptive athletes.

The Memorial Rehabilitation Institute offers a broad array of rehabilitation services including physical & occupational therapies as well as speech therapies. The Institute has been pivotal for patients recovering from conditions like strokes, brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, amputations, and orthopedic injuries.

The Institute operates with a central philosophy of patient and family-centered care. This approach ensures that treatments are not just administered but are crafted in collaboration with patients and their families. Such integration ensures that treatments are tailored

to align with the patient's goals and lifestyle.

Vehicle SafetY IS CRITICAL FOR EVERYONE

Vehicle safety is important for people of all ages. Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue is committed to ensuring that the public has access to educational information, resources, and services to help keep people of all ages safe on the roadways. Child passenger safety education and assistance with car seat installations are part of an ongoing service provided to residents of Broward County. The Public Education Unit at Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue offers year-round educational programs and services for seat belt safety, distracted driving awareness, and Car Fit education and safety checks. There is a lot the public can do to help prevent crashes and ensure people of all ages are safe while traveling on the roadways.

National statistics show that car crashes are the leading cause of death for children ages 1 -13. For younger children, the risk of death may be decreased by as much as 71 percent with the proper use of a child safety seat. Parents and caregivers must ensure that the car seat they use for their

child fits the child’s height and weight. Equally as important is that car seats are installed correctly in a vehicle. Follow the directions in your car seat user manual for proper installation guidelines. It is estimated that more than fifty percent of car seats are not used or installed correctly. Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue offers assistance with car seat installations. You can schedule an appointment online at https://bsofirerescuepubliceducation.as.me. Older children under 13 years old who no longer require a car seat or booster seat should always ride in the back seat and wear a seat belt for every ride.

Drivers must be committed to keeping everyone safe by practicing safe driving behaviors. This includes distraction-free driving, obeying posted speed limits, and never driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. It is important to note that drivers should never forget to look before you lock and practice LOVE which stands for Leave Our Vehicle Empty. Please ensure you never leave a child, pet, or person unable to care for themselves alone in a vehicle.

As we age, increases in fragility and decreased mobility may contribute to a higher risk associated with being involved in a crash. Older drivers can improve their safety by ensuring their vehicles are properly adjusted to fit them. A proper fit can help increase the safety of the driver, others in the car, and people sharing the roadway. CarFit is an educational program developed by AARP, AAA, and the American Occupational Therapy Association that helps older adults see how well their vehicle fits them. CarFit teaches people about essential safety adjustments that can be made to ensure they are always riding safely. To participate in an on-demand educational workshop and complete the CarFit Self-Assessment Checklist, please visit Car-Fit.org.

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue in Weston prioritizes vehicle safety education for people of all ages. The public is welcome to participate in any safety education classes offered or request an appointment for help with a car seat installation. We encourage the public to do their part in practicing safe driving behaviors to help ensure the safety of all people on our roadways.

Great Putting Drills

Low handicap players understand the importance of a good short game, especially on the putting green. Professional players have exceptional ball striking skills. In fact, a tour event is basically a putting contest. The best putter each week wins the tournament. With the proper techniques, everyone can develop into a solid putter. The following putting drills are designed to improve your ability to hole the ball on the green.

Clock Drill

Make the short putts. Nothing is more frustrating than hitting a great drive, placing the approach shot on the green and missing a twofoot par putt and walking away with bogey. Practice, practice, and practice from short ranges. The clock drill is excellent reinforcement. Begin by placing three balls in a line at three, six, and nine feet from the hole similar to the twelve, three, six and nine position on a clock. The goal is to make all twelve in a row. If you miss any putt, then go back to the beginning and start over.

Ladder Drill

Improve your putting from long range. Give yourself the opportunity to make short putts inside five feet from the hole. Percentages that you’ll make a putt dramatically decrease the farther away you are from the hole. The ladder drill is designed to improve putting from longer distances. Place a tee in the ground in a line ten feet, 20 feet, 30 feet and 40 feet away. In this drill, you are attempting to control the distance you hit each putt. The ladder drill begins by hitting a putt to the first tee, which is ten feet away. Next, hit a 20-footer, then 30-footer followed by a 40-foot putt.

The idea is to get the ball to stop as close to each tee as possible. The next step is to theoretically close the ladder. From the first tee, hit a 30-foot putt, followed by 20-foot putt followed by a ten-foot putt to the final tee. At the conclusion, you have successfully opened and closed the ladder. The drill continues by going through the same sequence from the opposite direction. If the first putts were all uphill, you are now faced with a series of difficult downhill putts. Once you can successfully navigate this drill, your feel on the greens should improve.

Path Drill

Many amateurs push or pull the putt off line. This is caused from an in-to-out or out-to-in swing path. The following drill will help develop a consistent path. Find a flat area on the green and place two clubs on the ground wide enough to place the putter head behind the ball. Swing the putter between the two clubs and hit the ball. If the putter hits any of the clubs, you are not swinging the putter down the target line. Make sure the putter head stays low to the ground and follows through.

It’s always great to take a lesson from your local PGA Professional and see what tips they have to share and teach to you as well.

What You N eed to Know.

Bad breath in pets may be a sign of periodontal disease that could lead to other health problems. Periodontal disease starts when plaque (a bacterial film) coats the tooth. Plaque hardens (calcifies) into tartar, a thick yellow or brown layer on the teeth. Tartar can irritate the gums, creating an environment where bacteria thrive. As the disease progresses, the gums become tender, red, and swollen and the bacteria continue to multiply. Eventually, the inflamed gums pull away from the teeth, creating pockets that trap more bacteria and food particles. The gums bleed, the roots of the teeth may become exposed, teeth may become loose, and your pet may feel pain when eating. If the bacteria enter the bloodstream, they can create problems for organs such as the heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys.

Signs of Dental Problems

• Bad breath

• Sensitivity around the mouth

• Loss of appetite

• Yellow or brown deposits on the teeth

Dental Care

• Bleeding, inflamed, and withdrawn gums

• Loose or missing teeth

• Pawing at the mouth or face

• Difficulty chewing

What to Do

Your pet needs routine dental care from your veterinarian and you. Annual veterinary checkups are essential for helping your veterinarian monitor your pet’s dental health, but don’t wait for a checkup if you suspect a problem. After an examination, your veterinarian may recommend a dental prophylaxis (tooth cleaning) for your pet. Anesthesia and pain medication are used for dental procedures. If dental disease is severe, your veterinarian will recommend the best treatment, which may include tooth extraction.

Pets are never too young to start having their teeth brushed at home; in fact, the younger they are, the better. Slowly and gently introduce your pet to toothbrushing. It should be a bonding experience that is reinforced with praise and rewards. Begin by rubbing your pet’s teeth and gums with soft gauze wrapped around your finger. Gradually switch to using a specially designed pet toothbrush or baby toothbrush with pet

toothpaste (do not use toothpaste for people because it can upset your pet’s stomach). If your pet is most at ease on your lap, keep his or her toothbrush next to the chair where you sit together. Focus on your pet’s gum line, and work up to 30 seconds of brushing for each side of the mouth at least a few times a week. If your pet won’t tolerate brushing, your veterinarian can recommend plaque-preventive products for your pet. There’s no substitute for regular brushing, but feeding dry food can help keep your pet’s teeth and gums in good condition. In addition, special plaque-reducing foods, treats, and toys can help. The Seal of Acceptance from the Veterinary Oral Health Council appears on products that meet defined standards for plaque and tartar control in dogs and cats. Ask your veterinarian for recommendations. Caring for your pet’s teeth can have several benefits. For example, a few minutes of brushing each week can help give your pet a longer, healthier life.

NATIONAL SUICIDE PREVENTION MONTH

eptember is National Suicide Prevention Month - a time to raise awareness about mental health and suicide prevention. I’m committed to removing the stigma associated with mental health issues. Florida has had rising suicide rates, making the need for awareness and action even more pressing.

Addressing mental health in diverse communities is vital, as cultural factors can influence individuals' attitudes toward seeking help. 2-1-1 Broward is a free and confidential service that connects individuals and families to experts that can guide and assist them and connect them to health and human series. It offers listening support, information, referrals, and crisis services in any language.

In 2022, the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, 9-8-8 was created to connect

Scallers with counselors 24/7. Although this helpline is a valuable tool, it doesn’t replace dialing 9-1-1 in case of emergency.

The 2-1-1 Broward helpline assists with mental health and substance use, military and veterans’ issues, general health, TeenSpace, child development, special needs connections, elder care, caregivers’ resources, emergencies, and more!

Governor’s Challenge

The VA along with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration initiated the “Governor’s Challenge to Prevent Suicide Among Service Members, Veterans, and their Families.” This initiative seeks to create a supportive environment for veterans, offering mental health resources, counseling, and peer support programs. By fostering a sense of community and understanding, the challenge aims to reduce

the stigma surrounding mental health and encourage veterans to seek help when needed. The goal of this initiative is to develop and implement a state-wide suicide prevention plan.

For more information, visit: floridavets. org/governors-challenge/resources/. Florida also encourages struggling service members, veterans, and families to call the Florida Veterans Support Line at 1-844-MyFLVet (693-5838).

GREETINGS FROM YOUR Chamber President!

With the back-to-school season upon us, our community has a unique opportunity to make a positive impact on both our local economy and the education of our children. While the convenience of big-box stores and online retailers is undeniable, let's not overlook the tremendous value that local businesses bring to our community.

When we choose to shop at local retailers for backto-school supplies, we're doing more than just checking items off our lists - We're investing in the future of our community! Local businesses contribute significantly to our economy, providing jobs and generating tax revenue that supports essential services. Moreover, these businesses often offer personalized service and a connection to the community that goes beyond mere transactions. Many small businesses are the sponsors that support our little leaguers, cheer squads and relay teams.

By supporting local businesses, we create a virtuous cycle of economic growth. The revenue generated stays within our community, helping other local businesses to thrive. This, in turn, fosters a vibrant business landscape that enriches Weston and beyond.

As we shop for backpacks, notebooks, and school outfits, let's consider the impact of our choices. Let's choose to strengthen our community by supporting the businesses that have been here for us year-round, and in doing so, let's ensure that our community's future is as bright as the minds of our students.

Now and in the future, the Chamber is dedicated to being a Convener of Leaders, a Catalyst for positive change, and a Champion for a strong business community. ▸ For more information and our calendar, visit www.westonflchamber.com.
