Thankful for the Present and the Future

N

ovember is a time when many of us take a moment to give thanks. But understanding how good we have it requires a bit of perspective. Social media algorithms combined with the current political environment can make our present-day problems seem insurmountable. The reality is we are living such fantastic lives that our great-grandparents wouldn’t be able to imagine them. It is easy to be pessimistic. There is another bloody war in Europe, we are still feeling the after-effects of the worst pandemic since the Spanish Flu, Global Warming continues to pose a long-term threat, and price inflation has returned to the economy. These challenges may be with us for some time, but they will be overcome. We have already come so far, so fast. 100 years ago, in 1922, the life expectancy at birth was about 60 years; today it is 79. Antibiotics did not exist. There was about one vehicle on the road per 100 people. Two in three homes lacked electricity; six out of seven homes did not have a bathtub. A typical person completed about eight years of school; segregation was rampant across the southern U.S., and the most common job in America was a farm worker. And, this was during the “Roaring Twenties,” a period of relative excess. Things we take for granted today like air conditioning, the internet, air travel, television, and higher education simply didn’t exist. Taking stock of all we have today makes us incredibly thankful. We live in comfort, in a beautiful community carved out of a swamp. Our children are relatively safe to pursue their passions. There are numerous educational opportunities for almost everyone. Each of us carries access to all the world’s knowledge in our pocket. Our community is an incredible melting pot of cultures. The necessities of life are almost universally provided for. We are thankful for all we have.

Originally observed as Armistice Day, commemorates the end of World War I when fighting ceased on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. The holiday evolved to be a celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good of our nation.

Honor Flight South Florida Celebrates Milestone 25th Flight

H

onor Flight South Florida recently celebrated its 25th flight transporting 72 veterans on an all-inclusive trip to Washington, D.C.. They visited the World War II Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at the National Mall, Arlington Cemetery, and the US Marine Corps War Memorial. The volunteer-led organization was also honored with a proclamation by Broward County Mayor Michael Udine for the hub’s dedication to serving veterans in South Florida, commemorating the organization’s milestone 25th mission to the nation’s capital. Veterans on the flight were welcomed home at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport with a celebratory homecoming ceremony. “Each of our missions have been special in their own way and we are always so honored to be able to thank the veterans that join us on each of our flights, so to reach this milestone of 25 missions means a lot to us as an organization and everyone who has been a part of this

journey with us,” said Honor Flight chairman Mike Miskew. “Being able to organize a truly memorable day for our veterans is what makes these missions so important.” Founded in 2011, Honor Flight South Florida is an independent hub of the national Honor Flight network that serves veterans in Monroe, Miami-Dade and Broward counties. The local South Florida Hub organizes honor flights from Fort Lauderdale and Miami airports four to five times a year, also hosting additional volunteer-driven events throughout the year.

Each November, the hub hosts its annual Rick Asper Memorial Golf Tournament to raise funds for upcoming flights scheduled for the following year. Honoring the late Rick Asper, founder and chairman of Honor Flight South Florida, the annual golf tournament is one of the hub’s key fundraisers and social events benefiting the organization’s programming for the following year. The Rick Asper Memorial Golf Tournament, slated for November 4, 2022, at the Davie Golf and Country Club, is now accepting participants and sponsors. Veterans, active-duty military, and first responders receive a special discount for single-player registration.

REACH OUT TO THE 'OTHER SIDE' AT THE FLORIDA DAY OF THE DEAD CELEBRATION

outh Floridians will celebrate the Day of the Dead (DOTD) in Fort Lauderdale. Since 2010 during this sacred time of year, the gate between Florida and Mictlán, the mythological Aztec “Land of the Dead”, opens as thousands of participants costumed like playful skeletons honor their ancestors in a FREE Signature Autumn Event for all of South Florida. The Day of the Dead (Spanish: Día de los Muertos) is a holiday traditionally celebrated on November 1 and 2.] It originated in Mexico and is celebrated broadly across the world. Although associated with the Western Christian Allhallowtide observances of All Hallow's Eve, All Saints' Day, and All Souls' Day, it has a much less solemn tone and is portrayed as a holiday of joyful celebration rather than mourning. The multi-day holiday involves family and friends gathering to pay respects and to remember friends and family members who have died. Fort Lauderdale’s obseverances will take place on Tuesday, November 2 with a candlelight vigil in downtown Fort Lauderdale and on Saturday, November 5th with a processional and celebration. You are invited to dress in traditional costumes, wear masks and Calaveras makeup and bring props and signs honoring your lost loved ones. Schedule of Events MEXHIKA STAGE 4-5:30pm Huizenga Plaza, 32 East Las Olas Boulevard Indigenous roots of Dia de los Muertos are

showcased before the Processional, with Aztec and Mayan performing troupes performing ancient dance and music rituals. Performances by Tloke Nuhake and Mesoamerican Danza. SKELETON PROCESSIONAL The ceremony begins 5:00 pm Sharp at Huizenga Plaza, 32 East Las Olas Boulevard A playful spectacle that honors the Mexican tradition where skeleton costumed revelers animate dozens of 10’-18’ tall giant puppets from Puppet Network and the Puppet Guild of South Florida. Musicians lead the way as this all-ages processional. FOLKLORICO STAGE 5-11pm SW 3rd Avenue just South of Broward Boulevard As the centerpiece of the festival, the Folklorico Stage showcases hundreds of performers presenting the best of traditional folk dance and music traditions from Mexico and throughout Latin America – closing with an amazing Mariachi concert! BONEYARD BANDSTAND 6pm-4am America’s Backyard, 100 SW 3rd Avenue The Boneyard Bandstand opens with New Orleans-styled Brass Bands, reinterpreted with a cool modern twist until 8:30 pm. Then the late-night party continues until 4 AM with sugar skull DJs and high-energy international music scapes. CRAFT CRYPT 4 PM - 11 PM ASTA Lot between SW 2nd and 3rd Avenues just south of Broward Boulevard Over 100 of the top regional handmade inde-

Harvest Drive Celebrates 30 Years of Children Helping Children by Feeding Families

L

ocal schools are partnering with Harvest Drive, Inc. to make sure local families don’t go hungry for Thanksgiving. The organization, in partnership with more than 200 schools, will provide a week’s worth of groceries plus a gift card or perishable items to ensure 2,400 families enjoy a Thanksgiving meal. This is nothing new for Renee Herman who founded this grass roots non-profit organization 30 years ago on the principle of teaching children the importance of compassion and empathy for others. What began as an annual Thanksgiving Drive blossomed into a year-round volunteer-driven effort approximately 20 years ago. Entering its 30th year, Harvest Drive continues its tradition by once again helping families to have a bountiful Thanksgiving feast and enough groceries for the holiday week. Students at participating schools have been collecting non-perishable items, household goods, and grocery gift cards. Collections began mid-October and will conclude in early November. The items will be consolidated at 13 school-based distribution sites to ensure that recipient families receive 6-10 bags of groceries in time for Thanksgiving. The mission of Harvest Drive, Inc. is to promote the concept of philanthropy to local

flagship school, Western High School, on Wednesday, November 16 from 3:00 pm 9:00 pm. Food will be distributed at a number of locations across Broward County. Local distributions sites include: HIGH SCHOOL ▸ WESTERN 754-323-2400 1200 SW 136th Ave., Davie 33325 Nov. 19th 9:00 am-1:00 pm mini-gym Renee Herman, Founder & President

students by providing the opportunity for them to give back directly to their community in a basic and meaningful way. Students working in conjunction with community partners provide food and other necessities including gently used clothing and household items to Broward County schools’ families in need during the Thanksgiving holiday and throughout the year. The Harvest Drive strives to educate students on the issue of hunger in our community and empower them to take leadership roles in lessening hunger’s devastating impact. Members of the local community are encouraged to volunteer or donate canned goods and non-perishable items. Donations can be dropped off at Harvest Drive’s

Chillin’ with Cops

WAS A SLAM DUNK

roward Sheriff Office (BSO) Weston District hosted a community policing event, “Chillin’ with Cops”, at the Weston Regional Park. The goal was for the deputies to interact with the young members of the community and their families in an informal setting to meet the Weston deputies and establish good police-community relationships. Everyone met on the basketball courts for some good old-fashioned sports fun. Kids of all ages got

to toss the ball around with the men in blue before enjoying snow cones and a surprise appearance by Burnie, The Miami Heat mascot, and the Miami Heat dancers. The event was a success with over 200 people attending. At the helm was Deputy Danielle Quinones. The ambitious officer was the brainchild behind it all because she wanted to improve people’s attitudes toward the police and increase their trust in law enforcement. “One of the most fundamental keys

to successful law enforcement is the relationship between the police and the communities we serve. Good police-community relations are imperative for developing trust and building community partnerships,” explained Deputy Quinones. “This event was filled with nothing but smiles and fun. It truly proved that these types of events are effective across all our community members. We are extremely grateful to work in such a beautiful community that welcomes us each day!” The framework for establishing trust between the community and the police has always been community policing. However, over time the nation’s communities’ character and composition have changed due to a shift in demographics, an influx of commuters, and the introduction of social media, and other online communication methods. Events such as these open the door for law enforcement officers and the

community to interact in a casual situation rather than a crisis. “Community outreach is a priority to us and something we strive to improve upon every day. This event was a great way to have fun while building relationships between our deputies and the youth of our community. What better way to get to know each other than while enjoying snow cones! Everyone had a blast playing basketball, soccer, and touring the SWAT truck! I can’t wait for our next event and the opportunity to meet some more of our residents,” exclaimed Lieutenant Michele McCardle.

eston, Florida, native, Damage Controlman 3rd Class Alia Alizo Ibarra was awarded Junior Sailor of the Quarter aboard USS Constitution, September 30. Junior Sailor of the Quarter is awarded to a junior Sailor who exemplifies outstanding dedication to duty and superior performance by going above and beyond their assigned job. “It is great to have all the hard work pay off,” said Alizo Ibarra. “I could not have done it without support from my fellow Sailors.” Alizo Ibarra has served the Navy for four years and her previous duty station was the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Laboon (DDG 58). Alizo Ibarra is a 2018 graduate of Cypress Bay High School.

USS Constitution, is the world’s oldest commissioned warship afloat, and played a crucial role in the Barbary Wars and the War of 1812, actively defending sea lanes from 1797 to 1855. The active-duty Sailors stationed aboard USS Constitution normally provide free tours and offer public visitation to more than 600,000 people each year as they support the ship’s mission of promoting the Navy’s history, maritime heritage, and raising awareness of the importance of a sustained naval presence. USS Constitution was undefeated in battle and captured or destroyed 33 enemy vessels. The ship earned the nickname of Old Ironsides during the war of 1812 after British cannonballs were seen bouncing off the ship’s wooden hull.

POC American Fusion Buffet & Sushi– A Culinary Experience from Around the World!

P

OC American Fusion Buffet and Sushi offers a vast array of dishes from around the world. With years of experience having worked at some of the most lauded restaurants in New York and Miami, restaurateur Will Lin, Chef Johnny HK, and Chef Kevin Z joined forces to establish the first-ever “non-traditional” buffet-style dining restaurant. Johnny HK built his experience in the New York kitchens of David Bourke’s The Oak Room and Balthazar. He created innovative dishes for POC with a unique blend of Western and Eastern techniques based on his personal life experiences. Kevin Z is one of the most well-known sushi chefs/artists in New York having worked at renowned restaurants like Nobu and Sushi Samba. His delicious and colorful creations delight sushi lovers from all around South Florida POC Buffet is the perfect place to bring the family for a meal this holiday season. With more than 100 items on offer, there is certainly something for everyone. The food is fresh and plentiful with lots of choices. The cozy restaurant is the centerpiece of International Plaza on Bonaventure Boulevard across from Weston Town Center. It is one of two locations, with the other located in Coral Gables. The space is packed with dining options. The various food options stretch along the side of one entire wall of the restaurant and include tons of sushi options, a salad bar, a hibachi grill, traditional hot dishes, and a dessert buffet. You will feel right at home as soon as you are greeted by one of the friendly staff.

The Food

The challenge with any buffet restaurant is balancing choice with quality. POC tackles this challenge by combining new, creative, sushi items with the traditional choices fish-lovers look for. They also offer a number of a huge variety of non-sushi items including tempura shrimp, Japanese rice & noodles, barbecue ribs and much more.

48 / Our City Weston / November 2022 / OurCityMedia.com

Sushi

If you enjoy sushi and have a big appetite, this may be the best restaurant in Broward County! There are over 30 selections of fresh sushi, sashimi, and hand rolls at any given time. A couple of our favorites are the peppered salmon nigiri along with the tuna sashimi.

Hot Food Selections

Hibachi items include steak, chicken & shrimp, along with a variety of traditional vegetables. The master chefs prepare each dish to order and one of the wait staff will bring it to your table. The hot food includes favorites like Thai coconut shrimp. The dumplings are fresh and the salad bar offers a vast choice of vegetables, fruits, and dressings.

Dessert

The restaurant has one of the best dessert selections in Weston. The tiramisu is delightful and the Creme Brule will make you think you are in Paris. There are also chocolate cake and ice cream options for kids or less adventurous. ■ POC American Fusion Buffet is located at 1651 Bonaventure Blvd. They are open 11:30 am - 3:30 pm & 5:00 pm - 10:00 pm Monday through Friday, Noon - 4:00 pm, and 5:00 pm - 10:000 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Zona Blu Restaurant– Fine Italian Dining in Weston

Z

ona Blu first opened its doors and welcomed Weston diners to sample a taste of Sardinia over seven years ago. Over that time the restaurant has become a fixture in West Broward’s culinary scene with its uncompromising quality and unique dishes and has continued to delight discerning Weston diners with a taste of the beautiful Mediterranean island off the coast of Italy. Zona Blu’s second location, Zona Blu WPB, opened in April at 8170 Okeechobee Blvd. in West Palm Beach. The Palm Beach location offers a Sardinian focused menu, delicious specials, a full bar and a spacious patio for al fresco dining.

Unique, Delicious Menu

Zona Blu’s menu features fresh pasta and seafood, wood-fired pizza, and imported ingredients found primarily in Sardinia, Italy. The restaurant’s cuisine is heavily influenced by Sardinia’s history. “Sardinian food is influenced by flavors from the Middle East, North Africa, Southern Europe, and the Far East,” commented Chef Fadda, “Those influences resulted in one of the most deliciously unique cuisines in the world.” Zona Blu takes pride in offering dishes that are not typically known outside of Sardinia, such as Fregola, a unique, couscous-style pasta simmered in a double reduction of fish tomato broth, then tossed with extra virgin olive oil, garlic, and the freshest seafood imaginable. Another favorite is Spaghetti al Cartoccio, which has spaghetti tossed with mixed seafood and fresh tomato sauce, which is then covered with

a thin pillow of pizza dough and baked in their woodburning oven. The restaurant also continues to offer foodie-favorite options from past menus. These include Pasta alla Ruota where your favorite pasta and homemade Panna sauce are mixed tableside in a massive wheel of 100% Parmigiano Reggiano. The cheese is incorporated into the warm pasta and creates a dish and experience you will not soon forget. Culugiornes are homemade stuffed pasta typically served during special occasions in Sardinia. However, at Zona Blu, this dish has become so requested, that their chefs prepare them daily. No need to wait for a special occasion to enjoy them! Fresh pasta dough is filled with a mixture of potato, pecorino cheese, and mint before being shaped into plump dumplings pinched together to form a seal. The pasta is then briefly boiled and served with fresh tomato sauce and basil. This dish is enjoyed by everyone, including vegetarians!

Truffle Season

South Floridians typically think of the winter months as tourist season; at Zona Blu, it is truffle season! Fresh deliveries of black and white truffles arrive weekly and are offered as an entrée enhancement. Their most popular pasta is Cacio e Pepe con Tartufo. A wheel of Pecorino Sardo cheese arrives tableside, fresh pasta is tossed until blended with the cheese, add black pepper, and finish the plate off with shaved black or white

truffle. We guarantee you’ll be transported to food heaven! Zona Blu also offers full catering services for families and businesses. Families can even opt-in for a chef to come along with your catering order to prepare their famous Pasta alla Ruota. Local businesses receive 10% off catering orders. Be sure to take advantage of Zona Blu’s popular weekday specials. During lunch hours (11:30 am - 3:00 pm Tuesday-Friday) select pastas are $15 and select pizzas are $10 for dine-in, carry-out, and delivery. On Wednesday evenings, all wine bottles under $100 are half-price. Their newest special is “Two for Tuesday” dinner specials where you can share 2 Aperol Spritz’s and a Cheese Board with 3 Sardinian Cheeses for $25 or 2 Espresso Martini’s and two slices of Tiramisu for $25! With gratitude and thanks, Zona Blu would like to wish everyone a Happy Holiday and Buone Feste!

THE DONOWAY CENTER Pancreatic NanoKnife Tumor Ablation for Advanced and Oligo-Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer

If you are being treated for advanced or oligometastatic pancreatic cancer you may want to contact Dr. Robert Donoway at ATLAS ONCOLOGY in Hollywood, Florida. Dr Donoway is using multi-modality therapy combining Pancreatic NanoKnife Tumor Ablation with chemo-immunoradio therapy to treat advanced stage cancer patients from around the world after they have stopped responding to standard of care therapy and have been left with few options for further treatment. With over 32 years of experience performing pancreatic surgery in south Florida, Dr Donoway recognized that because of late diagnosis, up to 85% of patients treated for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease at the time of diagnosis. This fact limited the benefit many patients might receive from pancreatic surgery, which is problematic as surgery has been long held to be the only reproduceable therapy for cure; whereas in reality surgery is currently more likely Palliative in almost 80% of the cases. Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating NanoKnife surgery with chemotherapy and now supplemented with immunotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially when compared to chemotherapy alone. Dr Donoway has been a pioneer in the use of pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex cases. During the past decade, patients from around the world have traveled to benefit from

this groundbreaking treatment by Dr Donoway, which is FDA approved. Dr Donoway also treats other advanced cancers, such as liver, Breast, and sarcomas, using NanoKnife Surgery based on its FDA approved guidelines. Patients experience a brief recovery, which means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating Pancreatic Ca. The treatment history been largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 10% five year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, all we’re doing is confirming Einstein‘s definition of insanity.” Dr Donoway is involved in ongoing research in identifying the best chemo-immuno therapy and sequencing to be used along with Pancreatic nanoKnife/IRE . Dr Donoway states, “the results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over nine years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have lived a little over a year, and so this technique opens a whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” Dr Donoway has presented his results of pancreatic ablation at the recent annual meeting of the American Pancreatic Association. ■ POSITIVE PARENTING

Picky Eaters:

WE’RE IN THIS TOGETHER! By Molly Brousseau

I

f you are the parent of a picky eater, you understand the daily struggle around mealtime. The struggle of wasted food, the battle over snacks vs meals, and the sheer stress of “is my child getting the correct nutrients or not.” This can be very stressful when you have a child who will only eat chicken nuggets and buttered noodles in front of the TV (Yes, I am THAT mom). From a former picky eater, and now as the mother of one, there are a few things that have helped alleviate some of the, ‘am I doing this right’ thoughts, and made me realize I am not alone. Jill Castle, a pediatric dietitian, and founder of the Nourished Child said, “The two things you can’t make toddlers do — you can’t make them eat, and you can’t make them go to the bathroom on the potty.” Growing up, many of us lived in a “clean your plate” household but as we learn more, we understand that when it comes to eating, we have 2 jobs as a parent, to decide WHAT they eat, and WHEN. HOW MUCH must come from them. Forcing a child to eat tells a child

we know more about their bodies than they do. We want them to be able to listen to their own hunger and fullness cues and teach them to have a positive relationship around mealtime. Exposure is an important part of incorporating more food into your picky eater’s diet. This can mean placing a food on your child’s plate 10- 20 times before they begin to eat it. The more they see, smell, and explore it, the more likely they are to try it. It is also important when exposing your child to new foods, you are still serving a “safe” food. Something that you know your child has already tried and enjoys, for example, strawberries, or peas. It not only helps ensure they eat something at dinner time but also takes the fear out of seeing new foods on their plate. Modeling good eating is a great way to teach your children the importance of eating a variety of foods. Teaching them that green foods help you fight off sickness or that apples are good for your heart, gives your child a why, and takes some of the pressure off. Setting and hold-

58 / Our City Weston / November 2022 / OurCityMedia.com

ing boundaries on snack times will ensure that your child knows what to expect and when to expect it. And finally, have fun! Use a variety of forks or food picks, cut them into fun shapes or make a picture, add sprinkles or sauces to foods to encourage interest. Remember, you are doing a great job and this stage can’t last forever (right?!). We can’t force our children to eat, only guide them in the right direction to make good choices. Alleviating some of the pressure off ourselves will in turn make for a more enjoyable, and well-rounded mealtime experience.

What Should You Expect From Your Realtor?

tance during the offer period, the home inspection process, and right up through the day of closing. This is where the experienced agent proves their value. Issues can and will come up between Sellers and Buyers that will require negotiations.

Local Expert:

Selling or buying a home cannot be set on autopilot and requires active full-time engagement. Beyond industry ethics, there are times when other parties to the transaction require follow-up time and time again to make sure all is completed correctly. Your needs are always first and foremost. Real estate transactions can be an emotional process – whether you are selling your beloved home, relocating somewhere new, or going through a life change that is difficult. Realtors often become a confidant as you let them into your homes, lives, and financial decisions, helping you navigate the process.

More than ever real estate is locally driven, and your Realtor should be local. Weston is a unique community and what is happening in our Weston Real Estate market is not necessarily the same as in other areas. Ideally, you want your Realtor to live in or close proximity to the neighborhood they are selling in. Who better to market your home or provide guidance in your home search than your local expert who knows the areas real estate trends including the economy, homes for sale, how quickly homes are selling, and what is driving the local market conditions.

Pricing:

Pricing a home begins with an in-depth property comparative analysis, coupled with local knowledge of your home, upgrades, niche neighborhood detail, lot size, etc. Likewise, helping a buyer navigate and understand the market and home values requires the same analysis on the other end. This isn’t a price-high and wait-it-out market, nor is it a market where Buyers are paying above and beyond the asking price while waiving concessions. That strategy isn’t getting homes sold today. The same holds true for marketing a home for sale. A yard sign isn’t a marketing strategy. Today's Buyer’s searches begin on the internet. High-quality professional photos, videos, and search engine optimization are what attracts potential buyers to a home. Ensure your Realtor has the technical savvy and experience to market your property on all social media platforms.

Negotiations:

Negotiations can be stressful and are ongoing throughout the purchase or sale of a home. Your Realtor should not only advocate for your best interests but also be a skilled communicator and seasoned negotiator. From listing until the closing table, anything can come up between Sellers and Buyers that require careful skill and expertise in navigating. Negotiation skills are of significant impor60 / Our City Weston / November 2022

Perseverance:

Resource Concierge:

Circling back to where we started, as your local expert, your Realtor should have relationships with all types of professionals in the area. Not just contractors, your Realtor is often a connector to your new community. They are able to recommend doctors, provide information on updating your drivers license, where to find the best bagels or empanadas, etc. Your Realtor should always be your go to source for anything you need.

■ ASK THE EXPERT

IMPINGEMENT SYNDROMES IN DANCERS By Dr. Carlo A. Messina

P

ain in the front or back of the ankle can occur from a dancer standing “en point” or “demi point”. Pain behind the ankle is due to a bone prominence that pinches the soft tissue or due to a fractured bone or cartilage in the back of the ankle (Os Trigonum). A deep pain in the back of the ankle is felt and is made worse if the foot points down. Treatment includes Rest, Physical Therapy, and Anti-Inflammatory Medication. If the pain does not improve, a Cortisone injection is given to decrease inflammation and scar tissue. Unresolved pain may be treated surgically, thus allowing a full return to dance. The back of the ankle is cleaned out and a small piece of bone may be removed with Arthroscopic Surgery to allow the dancer to return to full activity. Rarely an open procedure is needed. Pain in the front of the ankle is usually caused by thickening of the ankle joint lining and can cause pain while moving the leg forward on the foot. This impingement syndrome is usually associated with an ankle ligament injury and can become very painful, especially the first thing in the morning when getting out of bed to walk or after sitting for a short period of time and getting up to walk. The inflammation and soreness usually lessen with activity but return later on in the day. Physical Therapy and a short course of Anti-Inflammatory Medication may be necessary to reduce the inflammation in the ankle joint. If that does not improve, a Fluoroscopic Guided Cortisone injection may be necessary to reduce the thickening of the soft tissue. If conservative measures fail, a Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injection can be given into the joint to improve healing potential. In some cases, the impingement in the front part of the ankle does not improve and Arthroscopic Surgery may be necessary to completely regain the ankle mobility without discomfort. In some cases, a small spur is present on the front part of the lower leg bone. This can cause chronic pain and stiffness in the ankle. If present, arthroscopic removal of the bone spur is also performed to allow the dancer to resume activity. Prognosis is excellent with full return to dancing with proper treatment!

IMAGINE YOUR DAY WITHOUT GLASSES OR CONTACTS By Dr. Jane Therrien, Optometric Physician

O

rthokeratology (Ortho-k) is a revolutionary non-surgical procedure that eliminates the need for daytime glasses or contact lenses. You just wear the specially fitted lenses at bedtime. They improve your vision by gently reshaping your cornea while you sleep, like Invisalign for your eyes. When you awake, you will have clear, sharp, natural vision for your waking hours. It is FDA approved for children as well as adults. Ortho-K is a great choice for anyone who wants to see clearly without daytime glasses, contact lenses, or surgery. It’s also perfect for people with lifestyles where glasses or contacts may be inconvenient, like athletes, and people with allergies or dry eye. Ortho-K is a fantastic alternative for teenagers since LASIK is not recommended for anyone under 21 years of age or for those who are not stable in prescription. In addition, Ortho-K has been clinically proven to slow down or even stop the progression of myopia (nearsightedness) in children. This is a safe and effective alternative treatment to LASIK that can correct near-sightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and

66 / Our City Weston / November 2022 / OurCityMedia.com

presbyopia (blurred near vision when you’re over 40 years old). Children are great candidates for Ortho-K. The number of children that are becoming myopic (nearsighted) has been growing rapidly over the last 25 years. The rapid increase is due in part to children spending more time studying, reading, and using the computer and handheld devices. When a person cannot see clearly, it is because their eye is too long, or too short, or the surface is misshaped. These images fail to reach or focus on the retina. This produces blurred or distorted vision. In order to create a therapeutic lens, the surface of your eyes is mapped using a high-tech instrument called a corneal topographer. The Ortho-K lens is then custom designed specifically for your eye and its unique visual problems. Dr. Therrien specializes in the design and fitting of advanced custom Ortho-K lenses. It can take up to two weeks to achieve excellent vision. However, some people achieve this in as little as one day. The speed depends on your initial prescription. Also, Ortho-K is non-invasive and completely reversible.

Call today to schedule your Ortho-K consultation and wake up every morning seeing clearly without the need for daytime glasses or contact lenses.

TEE TO GREEN

The Power of Imagination

on the Golf Course By Dean Sklar, PGA Professional

W

hile some golfers have more athletic ability than others, every person can benefit from using mental skills to improve their lives and their golf games. Some of the organizational skills for quality of life and improved golf are: goal setting, making good conscious choices, adopting positive attitudes and beliefs, relaxation techniques, decision making, and enjoying life/golf in the moment. Every time you repeat a limiting belief such as one of these, you give it more power in your mind. In golf, as in life, what you think is what you create. Begin to question your beliefs. Is this what you really want to create? Use your awesome power of imagination to practice in your mind what you really want to happen. When you hear yourself reiterating a negative thought from your past, change the thought in your mind to a positive one. Golfers play golf because it is a challenge. Challenge yourself to change your beliefs and behavior to achieve the success you desire. Use the feeling that comes up as a cue for you to know whether your concerns are under your control, or out of your control. If you are worried about people or course conditions that you cannot control, replace your limiting thoughts with positive, constructive ones. For example, if you are anxious on the first tee and usually miss your tee shot because people are watching you, change your thinking to: “I can let go of everything outside of me by letting

▸ 68 / Our City Weston / November 2022 / OurCityMedia.com

it become fuzzy. I can focus clearly on seeing my target. I feel my swing tempo. I concentrate on my pre-shot routine to prepare my mind. My first tee shot is easy because I use the club in my bag with the biggest head. It is easy. I can tee it up and sweep through it. I love to hit the first shot of the day.” To reinforce these thoughts, you can prepare in advance by using mental imagery. Begin by putting yourself in a relaxed state by breathing deeply and releasing all mental and physical tension from your body. Create in detail in your mind the first hole. Mentally create the fairway, trees, bunkers, and yourself on the first tee. Notice that you are affirming your good tee shot with the messages above. Observe yourself breathing deeply to become relaxed and centered. See yourself going through your physical and mental pre-shot routine. See yourself hitting your very best tee ball (from your past experience) by visualizing and feeling your own smooth, easy, effortless swing. See the ball land on the fairway where you planned. Feel the emotion of happiness and success. Your feelings indicate what you need to notice about yourself. Become a better player by monitoring your negative thoughts that make you uneasy, anxious or tense. Know that these thoughts sabotage your performance. Use your mental energies to focus on the things within your control. You only have control over yourself because you are all you will ever have for certain.

How Do I Choose a Dog Food? By Miguel E. Cordova, DVM

A

high-quality, complete and balanced diet is important for the health and longevity of your dog. Among other benefits, a proper diet helps build strong bones, promotes healthy gums and teeth, protects immune function, and results in a lustrous haircoat. Unlike cats, which are carnivores (meaning that they must eat meat), dogs are omnivores, meaning that they can eat meat and plants as their primary food sources. A large number of dog foods are available at pet supply stores, so selecting a dog food can be daunting. How do you find a food that’s right for your dog? Start by asking your veterinarian the following: “Which food will meet the particular needs of my pet?” and “Which brand(s) do you recommend?” Most pet foods are created for different life stages, including puppy, maintenance, or senior diets. Within these life stages are even more specific categories. For example, if you own a Saint Bernard puppy, you’ll need to feed a puppy food for large-breed dogs. Large-breed puppy foods are specially formulated to meet the special requirements of large-breed puppies Before purchasing a dog food, look for a statement on the label that verifies that the food underwent AAFCO feeding trials. This means that the food was tested on animals according to guidelines from the Association of American Feed Control Officials. A label that says the food meets AAFCO standards simply means that a chemical analysis of the food appears to be complete and balanced, but the food has not been tested on animals. Because some nutrients may not be digestible when fed to animals, the feeding trial statement is a better indication of the nutritional adequacy of the food.

Do Certain Diseases Require Special Foods?

Nutrition can help slow the progression, or manage the signs, of many diseases. For dogs with kidney disease, for example, diets lower in protein have been shown to help slow disease progression. Foods with limited or hydrolyzed proteins can help reduce the itching and scratching in many allergic dogs. For dogs with osteoarthritis, many diets now contain higher levels of glucosamine and antioxidants to help reduce pain and inflammation. 70 / Our City Weston / November 2022 / OurCityMedia.com

Most diets that are designed for a specific disease are prescription diets and are only available through veterinarians. If your pet has a disease or condition, consult your veterinarian for nutritional advice.

Is a Homemade or Raw Diet Okay to Feed?

The advantage of homemade diets is that they can be tailored to the specific needs of your dog. However, most homemade diets found in books or on the Internet can be too vague or too complex, and ingredient substitutions or alterations may result in a diet that is nutritionally deficient or unbalanced or is even toxic. If you really want to provide your dog with a homemade diet, it’s best to work under the guidance of a veterinary nutritionist to ensure that the diet you prepare is complete and balanced for your dog.

What Do I Need to Know About Table Scraps and Treats?

The biggest problem with table scraps and treats is that they add unnecessary calories that can make your pet overweight. Pet obesity often leads to diabetes, increased blood pressure, and orthopedic problems, all of which can reduce your dog’s life span. If your dog is overweight, consult your veterinarian about a diet and exercise plan to get your dog back to a healthy weight. In addition, many dogs are allergic to common foods, such as wheat and chicken, resulting in problems such as itchy, infected ears and skin infections.

■ LEGALLY SPEAKING

HOLIDAY RECOMMENDATIONS

TO ACHIEVE FAMILY

Harmony

T

By Andrea L. Jakob, Esq.

hanksgiving may be the time to begin a family discussion about favorite family items and wishes for the future. The holidays may be a time for thanks and reflection, but it may also be a time to ask your father to consider leaving you his favorite t-shirt or his service medals to avoid a family rift in the future. Your "stuff" may come with various memories and emotions that will differ among your family members. Disharmony among adult siblings often comes at emotional times, such as the loss of a parent or the downsizing of your family home. My client "Maria" (not her real name) lost her father. She and her brothers never had a close relationship during dad's life, but it went haywire following his passing, all over a lawnmower. "Wendy," the neighborhood gossip, witnessed Maria's brother taking items out of the garage late one night and abruptly called Maria. Maria then began fighting with her brothers over the mower! While many people may like lawnmowers, for some reason, it touched a nerve in my client, and she wanted that one! This family also fought over a book and other "cherished" items. The push and grab over "stuff" sometimes happens to the best families out of grief, frustration, or resentment following a parent's passing. While my clients often prepare a list of assets such as homes, bank accounts, and investment accounts to pass to their heirs, what is usually missing are the personal items that, while not expensive, are priceless for their sentimental value. Often these items will cause big family fights between children who feel there was not a fair division of these assets. If your goal is family harmony, it could be a huge blunder to fail to consider the emotional ties children may have to their parent's possessions. I have several ways to remedy this potential disaster. I remember the remarkable way my sister, cousins, and I divided my Grandma Sara's tea sets and tchotchkes "stuff." We went around a circle, each picking one piece after another. The process was emotional as we discussed each item and different memories of our loving grandmother. Since fairness means different things to different people, the processes of drawing lots, letting people pick in birth order, or devising something else to divide is valuable. What's important is to follow the chosen strategy. Even if you're irritated that one sibling got what you wanted, if you agree to the division strategy, you may be okay with the outcome vs. angry like Maria, whose brothers came in late at night to "clean out" the house. A software tool called "FairSplit" helps families divide assets. According to the website, the "system helps move all parties toward agreement and lets each party know that the system provides them a fair and equitable way to divide. FairSplit helps divide things, not families." Sometimes the best strategy is the simplest one: Ask people what they want ahead of time. Many women enjoy gifting jewelry to grown children to see it worn and appreciated. Or, they may say they do not want any of your stuff! Such talks force us to confront the inevitability of aging. The alternative is to keep quiet and risk a family divided over "Stuff."

■ SAFETY CORNER

Holiday Safety

T

he holiday season is quickly approaching, and the house chefs are warming up their family recipes and ovens. Home fires tend to increase during the holiday season, and The Broward Sheriff’s Office Department of Fire Rescue in Weston wants everyone to enjoy the holiday season safely. Following some important fire safety tips in your home can help keep your family safe during the holidays and throughout the year. Cooking fires are the leading cause of home fires and injuries. Most cooking fires occur the day before Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving day, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day. From baking to boiling, frying, or sautéing, following these fire safety tips while cooking will help to keep your holiday season fire safe. Always turn pot handles towards the back of the stove to prevent accidental injury. Avoid placing dish towels or pot holders near the stove to avoid them catching fire. Keep a three-foot, kid-free, safe zone away from any cooking appliance to ensure kids do not play near not surfaces.

Watch What You Heat!

A simple safety rhyme to remember is: When cooking on the stovetop – stay and watch your hot pot. If the oven is on, don’t be gone. In other words, never turn your back to the stove and stay in the kitchen while you cook. Always be prepared and have an extinguisher in easy reach. If you see smoke or fire on the stove, turn the burner off and cover the pan with a lid. Don’t try to use water or run with a flaming frying pan. Similarly, if you see smoke coming from the oven, turn it off and keep the door closed. From 2014-2018, an estimated 44% of house fires resulted from holiday decorations left too close to a heat source. These fires resulted in an annual average of 770 house fires, two deaths, 30 injuries, and 11 million dollars in property damage each year. If decorating is on your agenda this holiday season, be sure to follow these safety tips. Ensure decorations do not block any windows/doors. Check string lights to make sure cords are not worn or broken, and bulbs do not have any loose connections. Dry Christmas trees are a fire hazard, so be sure to water yours daily if you have one. Do not place any lit candles or other heat sources near a Christmas tree or anything else that can burn. Candles start more than 1/3 of fires started by decorations. Always be sure to blow out candles or consider using flameless candles as a safer alternative. Turn off all lights/ decorations when leaving your home or going to bed. ■ WESTON CHAMBER

Greetings from your

Chamber President! By Patty Archer

2022-2023 | SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

I

nflation is being felt across the board, from Fortune 500 companies to entrepreneurs just starting their new ventures. However, an important difference between small and large companies are their reserves. The average small business runs with less than 30 days of operating expenses in the bank. This means that they are hurting harder from increases in costs, supply chain issues impacting their inventory, and the challenge of employee shortages. But while over 3 in every 4 businesses are seeing a rise in their costs, only half have raised their prices. Many businesses are holding out as long as they can, but you may see some changes going into the holiday season, such as limited hours to help with staff shortages or reductions in available products and services. Please remember that our local businesses need our support and our patience. These are our neighbors and are a vital part of the health of our community. This may seem like a bleak picture, but we have had some wonderful success stories over the past year as well. There are new businesses growing. People are starting their own enterprises even through these challenging times. We eagerly celebrate each ribbon cutting as a sign of the prosperity that lies ahead, and you are always invited to join us at these grand opening celebrations. Now and in the future, the Chamber strives to be a Convener of leaders, a Catalyst for positive change, and a Champion for a strong business community. ■ ASK THE SHERIFF

Providing a Helping Hand to Individuals Experiencing Homelessness

W

e are all only one major crisis away from homelessness. To understand this startling fact, we need look no further than the devastation wrought by Hurricane Ian, which destroyed an untold number of residences and displaced thousands of people into emergency shelters. Many who went to sleep the night before the storm with a home, food, an income, and easy access to physical and behavioral healthcare are faced with uncertainties of what’s to come. It can happen that quickly. The Broward Sheriff's Office Homeless Outreach Team works tirelessly to link displaced community members with the social services necessary to start anew and get back on their feet. Focused on providing care and assistance, the team has at least one specialist in every BSO district working full-time to support and assist these individuals. Everyone's story is important. These individuals come from all walks of life with diverse backgrounds, passions, and needs. Our Homeless Outreach Team specialists work to build rapport and trust and gain a better understanding of their situation. Sometimes, getting someone to accept assistance may take weeks, months, or years, but we've had tremendous success by never giving up. Once someone is ready to receive help, we work quickly to connect them with appropriate services. The men and women of BSO are committed to service – and aiding someone in need is an opportunity we don’t shy away from. In September, off-duty Sergeant Mike Weiner stopped to check on a man sitting alone in his vehicle with a flat tire. Sgt. Weiner, who oversees BSO's Homeless Outreach Team in Pompano Beach, discovered the man's name was Hayward. A Vietnam War veteran, Hayward had been homeless for an extended period and had lost contact with his family and friends. With the man's consent, Sgt. Weiner contacted veteran services. Deputy Mike
