Be a Point of Light This Holiday Season
Small acts of kindness can be contagious. A few years ago, when our kids were in Elementary School, Christy dropped them off at school and decided to go to the drive-through at a coffee shop. When she got to the window, with her credit card in hand, the barista told her that the driver of the car in front of her had already paid for her order. Christy looked up, but the other car had already sped off, having accomplished their covert act of goodwill. Christy decided to pay the kindness forward, as did the car behind her. A chain reaction of friendly gestures began as the next car carried on giving the gift of a cup of cof fee as well.
We visited Deerfield Beach this weekend. We saw a mother, who was busy with twin young girls while her older son played in the surf. The tide slowly carried the boy down the beach, as it tends to do. The mother tried to get his attention over the sound of the surf to no avail. Seeing the distress on the mom’s face, a couple offered to watch the girls while she went to retrieve her son. All was well when they returned. We were grateful the kind couple was there to help the mom.
These simple gestures of doing good remind us of President George H. W. Bush’s 1989 inaugural address. He spoke about a thousand points of light. Individuals across the country do “good deeds” for the betterment of all.
Let’s make this holiday season a time when we all look out for each other. Be one of those points of light with an act of kindness.

Providing a Higher Level of Care & Education
As parents we always want the best for our children. Ask any parent what they want in a preschool for their children, you will always hear three things: safety, learning, and emotional development. The Tree of Life Christian Academy Preschool has taken those priorities to heart. The teachers and staff at Tree of Life are committed to providing students with the highest level of care and education.
The eight-time Best of Weston winner and 2022 Best of Davie winner offers a unique, high-level learning curriculum with programs for infants through pre-kinder garten. They offer an innovative dual-core curriculum that includes immersive bilingual teaching. In fact, more Tree of Life students graduate reading at the first-grade level than any other Weston
preschool. We visited Tree of Life to learn what makes them unique.
Dual-Core Curriculum
Tree of Life Christian Academy uses two curriculums: the ABEKA curriculum and the HIGH SCOPE curriculum while immersing the children in the Spanish language. They believe a successful education is centered on the curriculum used to teach kids. The ABEKA curriculum has been used internationally for over 50 years. Scholastically, reading is half the battle for preschoolers. ABEKA has a six-step program to teach reading skills by using a phonetic approach.
The HIGH SCOPE Preschool Curriculum is the component of the HIGH SCOPE researched-based system of education. The curriculum has a set of teaching
practices, content areas, assessment tools, and a training model to help teachers use the curriculum to support children’s development. The curriculum is based on Active Learning.
Active Learning is direct, hands-on experiences with people, objects, events, and ideas. Children are encouraged to “construct” their own knowledge by pursuing their personal interests and goals, guided by trained adults who under stand the importance of learning areas for children in the preschool years.
Child Safety
The owners of Tree of Life Christian Academy are dedicated to the safety of every child who attends the school. This includes physical safety, maintaining a sanitary school environment, and
■ FEATURE STORY 20 / Our City Weston / December 2022 / OurCityMedia.com
ensuring that students’ emotional needs are met. The school employs a full-time armed security guard, has bullet proof entry doors, and offers an on-site clinic. Teachers are trained in CPR and first-aid. The school even exceeds the CDC COVID19 safety protocols; They not only have the clinic, but also a nurse on staff. Take a tour today to learn about all of the amazing things they offer, making this a very special and safe preschool. In the times we are living in, this Preschool offers very important features, which is rarely seen.
Engaging Classrooms & Facilities
The school’s warm and inviting class rooms are filled with age-appropriate materials to help stimulate creativity in each child. Learning centers include blocks, dramatic play, housekeeping,
manipulatives, art, library, science, sand & water station, music and movement as well as writing.
Committed Teachers & Staff
Tree of Life’s highly trained and certi fied teachers motivate, encourage, and create a thirst for learning by building on each child’s individual strengths, gifts, and talents. The school is equipped with the latest technology, as well as a 1,200 square-foot indoor play area and four outdoor playgrounds, and organic and natural lunches are served. As a Christian faith-based school, Tree of Life teaches moral and family values. Every student feels loved and valued every day they walk into this school.
Parents are invited to tour Tree of Life’s facilities, meet with the school's staff, and
speak with parents of existing students. After you do, you’ll know why they have been voted Best of Weston and Best of Davie by the readers of Our City. A Tree of Life Christian Academy Preschool truly gives children a higher level of care & education. Due to their overwhelming success Tree of Life Preschool is opening their second location this July, which will be located in Cooper City.
▸ Tree of Life Christian Academy Preschool is located at 1250 SW 160th Ave in Weston & 4035 Embassy Drive N. in Cooper City. To learn more about enroll ing your child or to schedule a school visit, call 954-440-0174 or visit www.treeoflifeacademy.com.

These family-friendly events encourage attendees to enjoy themselves and, in turn, appreciate the amazing community they have here in Weston.”
Cypress Bay Holiday Concert
Cypress Bay High School will host a pair of holiday concerts on December 15 and 16. Both
concerts start at 7:00 pm. Performances will be from the Cypress Bay High School Chorus under the direction of Brad Franks and the Jazz and Concert Bands under the direction of Brett Dawson. Their talented singers and musicians will perform holiday music from around the world.

$2,000 Reward Offered for Info on Racist Graffiti in Weston Hills
Last month, leaders of the Weston community gathered to present a united front against antisemitism and racism. Mayor Margaret Brown and BSO Weston Chief Sam Cavalieri led a press conference on Halloween following a rash of racist graffiti van dalism in Weston Hills.
“Speaking on behalf of the Weston community, today I stand before you to address the racist, anti-semitic messages that have shocked us all,” said Mayor Brown during the press conference, “Messages of hatred have defaced our Weston Hills community this month. I
am joined by clergy leaders from our faith-based community to denounce these acts of hate.
Our city flag embraces every resident who calls Weston home. When members of our community are attacked, it affects us all.”
Mayor Brown was joined by religious leaders, including Rabbis from all three Weston synagogues. The Broward County Sheriff's office is still investigating the situation. The BSO has offered a $5,000 reward through the Crime Stoppers program for anyone providing information leading to the arrest of the suspect(s) responsible.
⊲ If you have info on the people responsible call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
CUB SCOUTS MEET THE CHIEF
Webelos from Weston Cub Scout Pack 183 spent an evening with Captain Cavalieri from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. The scouts needed to meet with a community leader and chose to meet with one of Weston's primary law enforcement leaders. The scouts were informed about the challenges that government, city officials, and community leaders are faced with, within the community. They also got the opportunity to check out some of the gear that BSO deputies wear when on duty.
Captain Sam Cavalieri is a 30-year veteran of the Broward Sheriff's Office. He leads the BSO’s Weston District with 99 positions, including three lieutenants, nine sergeants, 61 deputies,
and other positions.
Pack 183 is part of the South Florida Council, Pine Island District, and is chartered by IBB Church of Weston. The scouts' primary meeting place is at Manatee Bay Elementary. Cub Scouting is part of the Scouting program of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), available to boys and girls from kindergarten through fifth grade, or 5 to 10 years of age, and their families.
Cub Scouts in fourth and fifth grades work toward the Webelos. The word originally was an acronym for the previous, now discontinued hierarchy Wolf/Bear/Lion/Scout with vowels added, and is now said to be short for " We'll be loyal scouts." Initially, Webelos work toward the Webelos badge and Arrow of Light.[24] A Cub Scout may begin work toward the Arrow of Light only after earning the Webelos badge; however, a new Cub Scout first joining a pack while in fifth grade may immediately begin working toward the Arrow of Light. It is the final level for a Cub Scout prior to promotion into the Boy Scouts.

POC American Fusion Buffet & Sushi–A Culinary Experience from Around the World!
POC American Fusion Buffet and Sushi offers a vast array of dishes from around the world. With years of experience having worked at some of the most lauded restaurants in New York and Miami, restaurateur Will Lin, Chef Johnny HK, and Chef Kevin Z joined forces to establish the first-ever “non-traditional” buffet-style dining restaurant.
Johnny HK built his experience in the New York kitchens of David Bourke’s The Oak Room and Balthazar. He created innovative dishes for POC with a unique blend of Western and Eastern techniques based on his personal life experiences. Kevin Z is one of the most well-known sushi chefs/artists in New York having worked at renowned restaurants like Nobu and Sushi Samba. His delicious and colorful creations delight sushi lovers from all around South Florida
POC Buffet is the perfect place to bring the family for a meal this holiday season. With more than 100 items on offer, there is certainly something for everyone. The food is fresh and plentiful with lots of choices.
The cozy restaurant is the centerpiece of International Plaza on Bonaventure Boulevard across from Weston Town Center. It is one of two locations, with the other located in Coral Gables.
The space is packed with dining options. The various food options stretch along the side of one entire wall of the restaurant and include tons of sushi options, a salad bar, a hibachi grill, traditional hot dishes, and a dessert buffet. You will feel right at home as soon as you are greeted by one of the friendly staff.
The Food
The challenge with any buffet restaurant is balancing choice with quality. POC tackles this challenge by combining new, creative, sushi
items with the traditional choices fish-lovers look for. They also offer a number of a huge variety of non-sushi items including tempura shrimp, Japanese rice & noodles, barbecue ribs and much more.
Sushi
If you enjoy sushi and have a big appetite, this may be the best restaurant in Broward County! There are over 30 selections of fresh sushi, sashimi, and hand rolls at any given time. A couple of our favorites are the peppered salmon nigiri along with the tuna sashimi.
Hot Food Selections
Hibachi items include steak, chicken & shrimp, along with a variety of traditional vegetables. The master chefs prepare each dish to order and one of the wait staff will bring it to your table.
The hot food includes favorites like Thai coconut shrimp. The dumplings are fresh and the salad bar offers a vast choice of vegetables, fruits, and dressings.
Dessert
The restaurant has one of the best dessert selections in Weston. The tiramisu is delightful and the Creme Brule will make you think you are in Paris. There are also chocolate cake and ice cream options for kids or less adventurous.
■ POC American Fusion Buffet is located at 1651 Bonaventure Blvd. They are open 11:30 am - 3:30 pm & 5:00 pm - 10:00 pm Monday through Friday, Noon - 4:00 pm, and 5:00 pm - 10:000 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. They can be reached at 954-389-5188 or at www.POCBuffet.com.

Maria Corina Martinez Celebrates Her 25 Years in Business
Maria Corina Martinez was born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela. With a background in Business Administration, she moved to South Florida in 1990. She started her real estate career in 1997 to help fellow Venezualan friends and family find places to live. 25 years later Maria leads MC Group, one of the most successful real estate teams in South Florida.
We sat down with Maria to learn more.
Congratulations on 25 years! Maintaining that level of success in South Florida is quite an accomplishment. What do you attribute your success to?
My college major in business administration helped me have the structure needed to succeed. I started my real estate career in 1997 as I was looking for my own home in Weston. Shortly after I began assisting my family, friends and fellow Venezuelans to find their new home in South Florida. I quickly realized I could become a full-time professional in servicing clients in all areas of Real Estate. I also had the blessing of having a great Mentor in my husband and business partner, Robert Coalla who has provided me with valuable guidance, support and coaching to help me thrive in my real estate career. 25 years later, I wouldn't dream of doing anything else. I strive to offer and provide to my team and to all of our clients and customers the utmost quality experience. MC Group's success is based in our commitment to integrity, strong work ethic, and our proven sales approach.
What areas of real estate does your team specialize in?
We specialized in General Real Estate. We offer advice and counsel in all areas of real estate services, whether listing a property for sale, working with a buyer to secure their dream home, leasing services or real estate investments. We also have a solid base of foreign clients and investors which has been a strong core of our business. We Ranked as the Top 2 Sales Group in Keller Williams Weston.
Sounds great! You’ve built a solid base in Weston. Does the MC Group cover other South Florida areas as well?
Weston is our hometown, but we do serve surrounding areas from the greater Miami markets to Boca Raton. We are very active in Weston, Pembroke Pines, Miramar Davie and neighboring cities.
What does being part of the Keller Williams team bring to the table?
Our affiliation with Keller Williams Realty and their leadership provides us with the ultimate tool chest of technology, services, trends, and market knowledge. These tools, coupled with our on-the-ground experience, allows us to help our clients flourish!
What does MC Group offer sellers?
After over two decades, we have learned what works and what doesn't. Our marketing expertise and investment are focused on what brings the fastest and most effective results to our sellers. The goal is always to secure top dollar for all of our listings, selling the property in the shortest time possible with the least inconvenience to our sellers. Our system is comprehensive and fully dedicated to achieving the best and smoothest outcome for our seller clients.
Tell us about your staff.
Our members are fluent in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. Our admin support staff is second to none, along with our carefully selected real estate professionals. Each of the team members adds value and diversity to the group, helping to offer the highest level of representation and service to all clients. Our dedication to customer service has attracted a loyal client base over the years. Over 75% of our business is from repeat customers and referrals
Is this a buyers’ or sellers’ market?
Florida, for the most part, is still in a seller's market as the state is in high demand for domestic and International Buyers. South Florida, specifically, is a magnet for international buyers securing investment properties, second and/or third homes. International buyers are coming from everywhere, Europe, Asia, and especially from Latin America. But make no mistake, change is coming. We are entering into a shift in the market. Inventory is still low but it is gradually accumulating, Appreciation has stopped, and rising interest rates will continue market trends. If you are a buyer in today's market, you now have less competition than in the past few months with more properties to consider.
What differentiates you from the competition?
Our high level of service, passion, a genuine interest in serving our client’s needs and always striving to help them have the best experience possible along the way. When you work with MC GROUP, you can trust that we will not only represent your best interests, but also boldly negotiate on your behalf. You can count on our Knowledge, experience and our well respected reputation in the industry with fellow Realtors. We have a proven approach in all of our services, which guarantees success.

Zona Blu is a taste above your traditional Italian restaurant. Thanks to Zona Blu’s success in Weston for the past seven years, it recently opened its second location in West Palm Beach. Both restaurants specialize in cuisine native to the Mediterranean island of Sardinia, designated by National Geographic as one of the world’s five Blue Zones, where people often live to be more than 100 years old. That longevity is attributed to the region’s food/wine, lifestyle, family values, and social activity. At Zona Blu, diners can get a true taste of Sardinia’s cuisine and culture.
The restaurant’s menu features fare native to Sardinia as well as traditional Italian dishes. Its extensive wine list includes a large selection of Sardinian wines. Zona Blu’s menu consists of tradi tional Sardinian cuisine such as fregola (a pasta that resembles Israeli couscous) and gnocchetti (small, hand-rolled pasta not to be confused with gnocchi), paired with traditional Italian favorites. The specialties of the house include two distinct pasta dishes, Spaghetti alla Ruota and Spaghetti al Cartoccio. Spaghetti alla Ruota features a giant wheel of hollowed-out Parmigiano Reggiano cheese. The server prepares the featured pasta of the day tableside inside the cheese wheel, tossing it until the pasta is blended with the cheese.

School Choice Applications Accepted Through February 3, 2023
School-aged children living in Broward County are assigned to a school based on their home address and grade level. Parents can, however, apply for their child to attend a school other than the one their child is assigned school. The period where parents can apply for their child to attend a different school, or the school choice application window, opens on December 1 and will be closed on February 3.
School Choice
By state law, students may apply to attend any public school that has not reached capacity, regardless of their home address. To determine which schools are accepting applications, Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) reviews enrollment data and projected students.
Parents may request a school that is accepting applications by complet ing a School Choice Application during the application window.
School Choice Applications are awarded using a computerized random selection process. If more seats at a school become available during the School Choice process, additional selections from the application pool will be made. There is no guarantee that a child’s application will be granted.
How to Apply
There are three alternative options available
families. These options include Magnet Programs, Nova Schools, or a reassignment School. Parents can submit one application for each option per child. Applications must be submitted on BCPS’ website prior to February 3.
Parents will be notified if their child was selected on February 10 for NOVA, March 3 for Magnet schools and March 17-24 for reassignment.

THE DONOWAY CENTER
Pancreatic NanoKnife Tumor Ablation for Advanced and Oligo-Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer
If you are being treated for advanced or oligometastatic pancreatic cancer you may want to contact Dr. Robert Donoway at ATLAS ONCOLOGY in Hollywood, Florida.
Dr Donoway is using multi-modality therapy combining Pancreatic NanoKnife Tumor Ablation with chemo-immunoradio therapy to treat advanced stage cancer patients from around the world after they have stopped responding to standard of care therapy and have been left with few options for further treatment.
With over 32 years of experience performing pancreatic surgery in south Florida, Dr Donoway recognized that because of late diagnosis, up to 85% of patients treated for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease at the time of diagnosis. This fact limited the benefit many patients might receive from pancreatic surgery, which is problematic as surgery has been long held to be the only reproduceable therapy for cure; whereas in reality surgery is currently more likely Palliative in almost 80% of the cases.
Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating NanoKnife surgery with chemotherapy and now supplemented with immunotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially when compared to chemotherapy alone.
Dr Donoway has been a pioneer in the use of pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex cases. During the past decade, patients from around the world have traveled to benefit from
Dr Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating Pancreatic Ca. The treatment history been largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 10% five year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, all we’re doing is confirming Einstein‘s definition of insanity.”
Dr Donoway is involved in ongoing research in identifying the best chemo-immuno therapy and sequencing to be used along with Pancreatic nanoKnife/IRE . Dr Donoway states, “the results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors are now patients over nine years without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have lived a little over a year, and so this technique opens a whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.”
Dr Donoway has presented his results of pancreatic ablation at the recent annual meeting of the American Pancreatic Association. For more information about Dr Donoway and the pancreatic IRE/NanoKnife program call 954-986-6366 or visit www.atlasoncology.com

this groundbreaking treatment by Dr Donoway, which is FDA approved. Dr Donoway also treats other advanced cancers, such as liver, Breast, and sarcomas, using NanoKnife Surgery based on its FDA approved guidelines. Patients experience a brief recovery, which means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner.

Embrace Diversity
By Ivis Mateos
The educational system standardizes the method by which our children are supposed to learn.
Parents standardize the expectation of the way a child is supposed to grow.
What happened to embracing originality?
To raising children that can express their innate intelligence/creativity?
The education system is a failed system for the majority of our children.
Why: because we are relying on a method created in a state whose population consists of a majority of individuals that do not represent the diversity of our country.
Whether it be nationality, economic status, environment, etc. We are measuring the success of 100% of our children in a method that applies to a small percentage
of our nation’s children.
But this column is not about the edu cation system, it’s about the standardized method parents are similarly applying in raising their offspring.
Our expectations as parents are ridic ulous. We are sabotaging ourselves and our children. Who are we kidding! We try convincing ourselves that we can raise our second child the same way we raised our first. We compare them to our neighbor’s kids, or other kids in their preschool and wonder if our kids are normal or an alien switched at birth.
I remember with my first child, I would use the 1-3 counting method for disciplining, and before I would finish saying 2, he was already following instructions to avoid spending time in his thinking chair. The second child, well, I could count to 10 or 100 and he would continue to run around the dinner table trying to avoid me catching him.
I looked like a mad woman by the time I was done running behind him. Tried that a cou ple of times before I realized it was best to talk him through choices and consequences. One of my boys is an introvert, hippie, and very laid-back. I try to spend quality time with him by taking him to a movie, inviting him to a quiet dinner, or taking a short trip together, and then, I try to give him time to express himself (notice I say try). My other child is a talker, hipster and has infinite energy. I take him to the park and let him run around for a while, to let him release some energy or he will drive me insane. Our car ride back home is usually our best time to talk about life.
There is not one child identical to another, there is not one successful method of teaching or raising a child. We need to learn to embrace their individuality, appreciate their weaknesses and encourage their uniqueness.

TIPS TO SECURE YOUR OFFER AS THE SELLER IN TODAY'S CHANGING MARKET
By Rose Sklar
What are your options today when selling in the current real estate market?
Buyers, now more than ever, need to be per suaded to buy. With interest rates rising and no end in sight, buyers are concerned about affordability and are worried about overpaying.
We are seeing housing prices stabilizing. Buyers are attracted to properties that are “priced right.” We are excited for sellers since the inventory is still favoring them. Unfortunately, many sellers think reducing their prices sends the wrong message. Inventory is growing and will continue to grow as we enter 2023. That is always a win-win.
As we all know, higher interest rates mean lower qualifying mortgage amounts and lower buying power for buyers. Some buyers looking to purchase are holding back, yet now is a great time for them to buy. The frenzy of the covid market now allows for more regular interaction between buyers and sellers. There are lower instances of multiple offer situations, which create a lot of stress for the buyer. The buyers and sellers have more opportunities to negotiate terms and conditions into the contract allowing for a more balanced transaction.
Multiple offers still exist. These homes tend to be highly upgraded with recent improvements, including new roofs, hurricane impact protection, and added amenities. Move-in ready is still a significant factor for buyers. Lower initial offers, often called lowball offers, are back in play, not that this is a strategy I would recommend, as it tends to add a layer of emotion that often prevents a deal from getting to an amicable conclusion. However, we are seeing a return to normalcy regarding days on the market and closing prices below asking. The tables have changed, and sellers now need to adjust and work to get more realistic and move back to Power Pricing their homes in what I like to call the “Striking Zone” as inventory grows throughout our area here in SE Florida, as well as the country in general.
New strategies to stand out as a Seller: Power Price your home to sell in the
striking zone: This can be a winning strategy, as most buyers are savvy today; some are laser-focused on price per square foot and/or upgrades, prime location/neighborhood. Power pricing is at the top of all buyers’ searches while pricing aggressively. The key to selling a home is to price to stimulate activity ― no longer to test the market. Attempting to set a price that will create a lot of negotiating room may result in you never getting the chance to settle in the first place. It’s all about being smart when pricing your home.
Prepare your home for sale: Pre-inspect and fix any issues before you list. Also, plan work on your home with the best Return on Investment. Today's savvy buyers are still willing to pay more for updated homes. Or consider an allowance for decorating/renovation to be paid at closing.
Seller Concessions: Offer to pay for Buyers closing costs or a portion. Seller-paid closing costs or concessions are money paid toward the closing. Generally, this money is applied to the buyer’s closing costs. Seller concessions allow you to roll the closing expenses into your home loan.
Buydown program, available through Guarantee Rate Affinity. The Buydown program has two options. The first option is a temporary solution where the seller helps the buyer purchase by buying down the interest rate for a buyer in the first year at 2% and 1% in the second year. The second option is a permanent
solution where the Seller helps the Buyer lower their interest rate for the life of the loan. This can help a buyer buy down the mortgage rate and lock in at a lower-than-going rate. It will be paid at settlement and flows through the title company. Often, the process counts points under the seller-paid costs. This can impact the buyer's payment more than the price.
Offer to pay Homeowner Association fees for 6-12 months or prepay taxes.
Look into whether your sellers have an assumable mortgage and check the require ments. Although rare, this may be rare, and it is something to advertise in the description.
What is very clear to me is the opportunities for buyers and sellers who react correctly to the market with expert guidance. The best opportunities are always in a changing market for those who seek good counsel and move quickly to take advantage of the opportunities the market presents. Today, the opportunities are on both sides of a property sale.

HEEL & ARCH PAIN IN ADULTS
By Dr. Carlo A. Messina
Plantar Fasciitis is an inflammation of the main ligament in the arch where it attaches to the heel bone and suppor ts the foot.
Causes can include excessive activity over a short period of time. This condition can occur in flat or high arched feet. Tight muscles, especially the calf and hamstrings, cause increased tension in the fascia. Poor shoe gear as well as walking barefoot on hard floors for prolonged periods of time is often a contributing factor.
Symptoms include pain first thing in the morning when getting out of bed and putting the foot down to the ground. With walking, the pain usually diminishes. Pain can also occur after sitting for a prolonged period of time or getting out of a car and starting to walk. Occasionally burning, numbness, shooting or tingling into the heel happens with or without weightbearing. Extreme tenderness to touch the heel or arch region occurs, especially during or after activity. It is commonly asso ciated with lower back pain, due to compensation and abnormal gait. Rarely swelling or discoloration to the heel occurs.
Treatment starts with avoiding going barefooted as well as proper shoe gear to support the arch and heel. Anti-inflammatory medications to reduce the inflammation, both orally and Ultrasound-guided. Taping the foot to support it can give immediate relief. Custom molded orthotic (shoe insert) to permanently support the foot and prevent reinjury. Frequent stretching of the calf and hamstring muscles to improve overall flexibility is necessary. Night Splints are utilized to splint the foot at night to stretch the muscle in the back of the leg. Occasionally immobilization in a cast or a boot to completely rest the foot depending on level of pain and discomfort. Physical Therapy can be used to decrease pain and inflammation. If conservative measures fail, Shockwave therapy (EPAT), Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) or Stem Cell injections are used. Endoscopic surgery is a last resort to release a small portion of the ligament from the heel.
Prognosis is excellent in over 99% of the cases if early and aggres sive treatment is performed. No long-term problems are expected and surgery is rarely necessary for this condition.

DRY EYE
By Dr. Jane Therrien, Optometric Physician
Dry eye is a condition in which a person doesn't have enough quality tears to lubricate and nourish the eye. Tears are necessary for maintain ing the health of the front surface of the eye and for providing clear vision.
Causes
Inadequate amount of tears. Tears are produced by several glands in and around the eyelids. Tear production tends to diminish with age, with various medical conditions, or as a side effect of certain medicines. Environmental conditions, such as wind and dry climates, can also decrease tear volume due to increased tear evaporation. When the normal amount of tear production decreases or tears evaporate too quickly from the eyes, symptoms of dry eye can develop.
Poor quality of tears. Tears are made up of three layers: oil, water, and mucus. Each component protects and nourishes the front surface of the eye. A smooth oil layer helps prevent evaporation of the water layer, while the mucin layer spreads the tears evenly over the surface of the eye. If the tears evaporate too quickly or do not spread evenly over the cornea due to deficiencies with any of the three tear layers, dry eye symptoms can develop.
Risk Factors
Age. Dry eyes are a part of the natural aging process. The majority of people over age 65 expe rience some symptoms of dry eyes.
Gender. Women are more likely to develop dry eyes due to hormonal changes caused by pregnancy, the use of oral contraceptives, and menopause.
Medications. Certain medicines, including antihistamines, decongestants, blood pressure medications, and antidepressants, can reduce tear production.
Medical conditions. People with rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, and thyroid problems are more likely to have symptoms of dry eyes. Also, problems with inflammation of the eyelids (blepharitis), inflammation of the surfaces of the eye, or the inward or outward turning of eyelids can cause dry eyes to develop.
Environmental conditions. Exposure to smoke, wind and dry climates can increase tear evaporation resulting in dry eye symptoms. Failure to blink regularly, such as when staring at a computer screen for long periods of time, can also contribute to the drying of the eyes.
Other factors. Long-term use of contact lenses can be a factor in the development of dry eyes. Refractive eye surgeries, such as LASIK, can decrease tear production and contribute to dry eyes.
Symptoms
▸ Redness.
▸ Stinging, scratching, or burning sensations.
▸ A feeling of something in their eyes
▸ Light Sensitivity.
▸ Watery eyes.
▸ Stringy mucus near the eye.
▸ Blurry Vision.
▸ Diagnosis
Dry eyes can be diagnosed through a compre hensive eye examination. Testing with emphasis on the evaluation of the quantity and quality of tears produced by the eyes may include:
▸ Patient history to determine the patient's symptoms and to note any general health problems, medications, or environmental factors that may be contributing to the dry eye problem.
▸ External examination of the eye, including lid structure and blink dynamics.
▸ Evaluation of the eyelids and cornea using bright light and magnification.
▸ Measurement of the quantity and quali ty of tears for any abnormalities. Special dyes may be put in the eyes to better ob serve tear flow and to highlight any chang es to the outer surface of the eye caused by insufficient tears.
Treatment
Treatments for dry eyes aim to restore or maintain the normal amount of tears in the eye to minimize dryness and related discomfort and to maintain eye health.
Adding tears. Mild cases of dry eyes can often be managed using over-the-counter artificial tear solutions. These can be used as often as needed to supplement natural tear production. Preservative-free artificial tear solutions are recommended because they contain fewer additives, which can further irritate the eyes. People with dry eyes that don't respond to
artificial tears alone will need to take additional steps to treat their dry eyes.
Conserving tears. Keeping natural tears in the eyes longer can reduce the symptoms of dry eyes. This can be done by blocking the tear ducts through which the tears normally drain. The tear ducts can be blocked with tiny silicone or gel-like plugs that can be removed if needed. Or a surgical procedure can permanently close the tear ducts. In either case, the goal is to keep the available tears in the eye longer to reduce problems related to dry eyes.
Increasing tear production. A doctor of optometry can prescribe eye drops that increase tear production. Taking an omega-3 fatty acid nutritional supplement may also help.
Treating the contributing eyelid or ocular surface inflammation. A doctor of optometry might recommend prescription eye drops or ointments, warm compresses and lid massage, or eyelid cleaners to help decrease inflammation around the surface of the eyes.
Prevention
▸ Remember to blink regularly when read ing or staring at a computer screen for long periods of time.
▸ Increase the humidity in the air at work and at home.
▸ Wear sunglasses outdoors, particularly those with wraparound frames, to reduce exposure to drying winds and the sun.
▸ Nutritional supplements containing essential fatty acids may help decrease dry eye symptoms in some people. Ask your doctor if taking dietary supplements could help your dry eye problems.
▸ Avoiding becoming dehydrated by drink ing plenty of water (8 to 10 glasses) each day.
▸ Avoid air getting blown in your eyes by directing car heaters away from your face.
▸ Avoid environments that are drier than normal, such as deserts, airplanes, and places at high altitudes.

Florida’s Only 5-Star Range – Nexus Shooting
Whether you are looking for a fun new sport or hobby, an exciting idea for your next date night, or peace of mind pro tection for yourself and your family, Nexus Shooting can assist multiple needs. The unique state-of-the-art facility is one of the world’s most advanced gun store and range.
The facility features Nexus Lanes, a live fire digital video targeting sys tem which creates a unique training environment. Their friendly and professional staff is available to assist and make each guest feel safe and comfortable. Instructors teach new techniques while always promoting safety and new defensive techniques.
Located conveniently in Davie, the award-winning range offers more than just a retail showroom. They offer their customers a safe, high-tech shooting range, training and licens ing classes, and an overall exclusive experience regardless if one is a novice or a professional.
We sat down with co-owner Bernard Hsiao, MD. PhD. to learn more about Nexus.
How did you, a physician, get involved with opening one of the world’s most advanced gun ranges? (laughs) It does seem far removed from my role in medicine, doesn’t it? Most people are surprised that I had actually never shot until just a few years before opening Nexus. Once I started though, I was hooked. I’m an extremely competitive person and became intensely involved in local pistol matches. I was practicing several times a week, often shooting thousands of rounds.
Over time though, I noticed I was strangely becoming short of breath during my regular exercise routine. I realized I was inhaling gun smoke and the toxic by-products due to the inadequate ventilation of the ranges I was shooting in. My respiratory function was being compromised, and I was getting lead poisoning!
I took a hard look at the gun industry and asked several ques tions. Why are there no regulations protecting shooters from suffering the same ailment I did? Why are gun ranges and stores frequently
dirty and unsafe “holes” in the wall? Why are we still shooting at paper targets in the 21st century? How can we make shooting more fun? Why do gun store “experts” treat women and novice shooters with such disdain? The concept of Nexus emerged to provide the answer to all of these issues.
How has Nexus addressed the toxic gun smoke? Not only will our venti lation system protect you from the toxic byproducts of shooting, but the HEPA filtration and laminar air flow are also superb at affording protec tion from the respiratory droplets of COVID-19. The air pumped into the range is actually cleaner than the air outside, so shooting with us is actu ally one of the safer activities you can enjoy during the pandemic.
You also mentioned safety. What sets Nexus apart? Safety is our number one priority. We have range safety officers on the range to assist our members and ensure everyone’s safety. Each member is separated by bulletproof walls. We also have multiple ranges, so you can come in with your friends or family and shoot in complete safety and privacy.
How has Nexus made shooting more fun? Since the gun’s invention, we’ve been making holes in paper tar gets which is boring and not great training. My brother and partner in Nexus, Michael Hsiao, has a back ground in programming. We lever aged his expertise to make shooting
more exciting through technology. Thus, our advanced virtual range, the Nexus Lanes, was born. You shoot your actual gun and real ammo at interactive video targets, like zombie games, skill drills, asteroids, etc. The computer provides instant feedback, scoring and analyzing each shot. We also have a standard paper target range for those that prefer a tradi tional experience. Seems like a great partnership. Was it just you and your brother that started Nexus? Our third partner, Christopher Longsworth, brought the final piece of the puzzle with his background in real estate devel opment and architecture. All the projects in his portfolio are highly regarded as being at the cutting edge of modern architecture, such as Strata at Plantation, and Koi Marina and Residences in Pompano. It was through his vision that the striking architectural design of the building and high-end retail showroom came to fruition. Our guests call our show
room the “Apple Store” or “Guggenheim Museum” of gun stores because of the spacious, clean and welcoming environment. What else distinguishes Nexus? It’s really the experience we offer. Shooting is the “new bowling”, a family friendly activity. We’re not here to just sell guns. Nexus is the only five-star range in South Florida rated by the National Shooting Sports Foundation. We received this presti gious award by providing an unparal leled shooting and shopping expe rience, as well as superb customer service. We carry one of the largest inventories in the country with thousands of guns in stock. We also have hundreds of rental guns, so you can try before you buy. Our training program is also extremely compre hensive. Our instructors can train anyone including someone who has never touched a gun before to expe rienced shooters, security personnel, and even law enforcement. We focus on the needs of female shooters too. Half of our staff is female, including our store manager. We have female instructors also.
Nexus seems very high end. Is it expensive to shoot there? That’s a common misconception. Even though we are a five-star range and offer the highest level of amenities and quality, we aren’t even the most expensive range in Broward County. It’s like driving a Ferrari for the price of a Toyota!
■ Nexus Shooting is located at 2600 Davie Road in Davie. Hours of operation are MondayFriday from 10am - 10pm; Saturday from 9am to 10pm; and Sunday from 9am-8pm. For more information, please call 954-587-8005; send an email to info@nexusshooting.com or visit www.NexusShooting.com.

The Mental Game of Golf
By Dean Sklar, PGA Professional
olf is a sport where players can get consumed by emotions, distractions and negative thoughts. These factors can make a golfer feel “out of control” resulting in two reactions: giving up (going through the motions to just finish the round) or forced play (trying harder by adjusting mechan ics or over-analyzing their play).
The most optimal mindset for peak performance requires that you avoid engaging in over-thinking and over-an alyzing while playing. In the heat of the moment, pressure and mistakes can seem overwhelming but if you can commit to adopting the right mindset and spend the time to train your mind, your golf game will soar. Always remember, your emotional reaction, your thoughts and your focus are 100% within your control – you just need to learn how to do it. Here are four tips on how to adopt the right mindset.
TIP #1: Competitive Routine
Your pre-shot routine is the key to calm your mind and body. The last part of your routine should signal your mind and body that you are fully ready and committed to THIS shot. Try including the word “Ready!” at the end of your routine for emphasis.
TIP #2: Focus on Task
Always focus on the process of performing a task… not the outcome. Ask yourself, “What exactly do I need to do in this moment?” Choose your strategy for the shot, align your shot, perform
Gyour pre-shot routine, trust and swing. Anything more than that is useless noise.
TIP #3: Thought Control
You will have thousands of positive, negative and neutral thoughts throughout a round of golf. You may not be able to control which thoughts come into your mind, but you can control what thoughts you grab on to and buy in to.
I like this analogy. Imagine your mind is like a fish tank. Different fish swim into your awareness like thoughts. It is up to you to decide which ones you want to focus on. The cute small blue and yellow spotted one or the ugly gray and black fish. Tell yourself that just because a thought comes through your mind, it is your choice whether you stay with this thought or not. Let go of self-defeating thoughts and choose self-enhancing thoughts. Try to do this in your next practice round.
TIP #4: Anxiety Management
Begin to recognize your troublesome thoughts that lead to worrying before and during your performances. Train yourself in relaxation techniques (ie: deep breath ing, imagery) to reduce your stress levels. It is important for you to equip yourself with diverse strategies to regain the calm, clear mind and automatic execution required for peak performance, especially in critical moments during a tournament. You wouldn’t just bring one golf club to a tournament because you know you will face many different shot situations; you bring a variety of clubs to best attack each shot. The same should be true for your mental game. Having a selection of optimal mindset tools and strategies at your disposal prepares and arms you to face the various challenges that you will come across during a round of golf.

SELECTING A NEW PUPPY
By Miguel E. Cordova, DVM
Before choosing a puppy, it’s important to research dog breeds to find one tha t fits into your lifestyle.
A healthy puppy should be bright and alert, without signs of coughing, sneezing, or lethargy.
▸ A puppy should have good social skills with its littermates and with people of all ages.
▸ Puppies that are loners or show signs of domi nance or aggression may be challenging to train.
What Should I Consider Before Getting a Puppy?
While a puppy can tug at anyone’s heartstrings, choosing a puppy should be more than an emotional decision. All too often, the cute and cuddly puppy that is purchased on impulse is relinquished to a shelter because it grew up to be a large, rambunctious dog. That’s why it pays to do your homework before you even look at a puppy.
Start by researching the kind of adult dog that will be most compatible with your lifestyle. A book on dog breeds is a good starting place, but also ask veterinarians for their suggestions. They are very familiar with the different dog breeds and their suitability for each home. You can also visit dog shows to see many different breeds at once and talk with dog breeders and trainers.
Consider the size of the adult dog and how it would fit into your household. Would you prefer a lap dog or do you have room for a large dog? Research the exercise and grooming requirements of different breeds. Some breeds, such as herding dogs, require more exercise and may be best suited for someone who is looking for a jogging partner. Other breeds need regular grooming, so you will need to plan for those expenses.
Some breeds may be predisposed to certain health conditions. In some cases, you may ask the breeder to test for the condition, if possible, or provide a written guarantee should the condition occur. Mixed-breed dogs may be less likely to have certain health conditions than purebred dogs.
Where Should I Look for a Puppy?
If you prefer a purebred dog, ask veterinarians and breed clubs for advice on how to locate a reputable breeder. You’ll want to interview several breeders and ask to see the puppy’s parents and the breeding facility, if possible. It is important to visit the facility to ensure that a limited number of puppies are raised in a sanitary, well-socialized environment. When buying a purebred dog, it’s worth the effort to find a reputable breeder.
Unfortunately, there are many puppy mills that sell
poorly socialized puppies that may develop health and behavior problems over time. These puppies are often sold at pet stores and become ill, requiring costly treatment. Buying a puppy from a pet store also limits your knowledge of the puppy’s initial living conditions, and you cannot see the puppy’s parents to ensure they are in good health and well socialized.
How Do I Check a Puppy’s Physical Health?
Most breeders and some shelters will provide you with paperwork that the puppy has been examined by a veterinarian, has been checked/treated for parasites, and has received at least the first round of vaccines. Many breeders may also provide you with a health guarantee.
A healthy puppy should:
▸ Appear alert and energetic, not lethargic (tired)
▸ Be well fed, with a little fat covering the ribcage
▸ Have a good coat, without dry, flaky skin or bald patches
▸ Walk and run normally, without limping
▸ Have no discharge from the eyes, nose, or ears
▸ Follow a tossed toy with its eyes
▸ Not cough, sneeze, or appear to have difficulty breathing
▸ Turn to look at you when you clap or make a noise behind it
Puppies should be comfortable when handled. Try holding the puppy and touching the ears, mouth, and paws. If the puppy becomes aggressive or struggles to get away, it might not be the kind of dog who will snuggle with you on the couch or allow you to trim its nails. Choosing a healthy puppy with a good disposition will increase your chances of raising a dog that will be a great fit for your household and your best friend for years to come!

SPECIAL SESSION
By State Representative Robin Bartleman
he property insurance mar ket in Florida is in crisis, and we’re all suffering. It didn’t take me going door-to-door throughout District 103 during the campaign to find out that there’s a crippling problem in this state. My office has been receiving calls from constituents for months now seeking respite from steep insurance rate increases and homeowners being dropped from their insurance policies. Too many companies have folded or stopped writing policies in Florida, and it only got worse after this year’s hurricane season. The Governor announced in October that he would be calling for a Special Session before the end of the year. The goal of this session would be to provide permanent property tax relief for storm victims, provide appropriations for SWFL, and present additional reforms to the property insurance market to help homeowners.
In May, during Special Session D, we were able to pass legislation that would begin to stabilize the state’s insurance market by creating
Ta “Reinsurance Assistance Program” (RAP) for insurance companies. This was a start to finding a solution and I look forward to additional reforms this December to provide relief to you and your families. Other reforms passed included:
▸ property insurers who utilize RAP must reduce policyholder premiums by June 30, 2022, to reflect their savings from the program
▸ creates the "My Safe Florida Home" pro gram to provide homeowners with in sured home values of $500,000 or less with grant funds for home hardening
▸ creates separate roof deductibles
▸ protects property owners from nonre newal based on the age of their roof
▸ provides changes to property insurance litigation regarding attorney fees and assignment of benefits
▸ holds insurance companies accountable Although consumers won’t see relief for 12-18 months, I supported the bill because it
was a start to tackle the unacceptable status quo for homeowners. I look forward to working on legislation in December to find solutions for consumers and will update you in January! From my family to you, have a Happy Holiday and New Year!
▸ As always, I’m here to help. Please reach out anytime at (954) 668-3662 or robin.bartle man@myfloridahouse.gov.

BACK TO BUSINESS AT BSO!

CLOSING CASES
hat a year it's been! As we turned the corner on the COVID-19 pandemic, the Broward Sheriff's Office (BSO) remained fully committed to our core mission of providing top-notch public safety services while continuing to create new and innovative programs and initiatives. We returned to hosting in-person community events, solving decade-old crimes, and improving critical training and educational opportunities for employees. Here are some of the highlights:
CONNECTING WITH THE COMMUNITY
After two years of limited in-person community interaction, BSO showed up in a big way. We hosted numerous important events, including our Shreda-thon and Operation Medicine Cabinet events, National Night Out, town halls, and other community-centered events. These opportunities continue to build mutual trust and understanding with those we serve.
COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS
We awarded 76 deserving communi ty-based non-profits a total of $930,000 in Law Enforcement Trust Funds (LETF). This was the most money given out in a single year under my leadership. These funds, which come from the forfeiture and seizure of contraband used in the commission of a crime, are given back to the community through organizations to further the mission of preventing crime and keeping our neighborhoods safe. To learn more about how your non-profit organization can apply for a future LETF grant, please visit sheriff.org and follow us on social media for future announcements on when applications are being accepted.
STRENGTHENING OUR 911 SYSTEM
Earlier this year, BSO succeeded in obtaining additional funding from the Broward County Commission to increase the salaries of our communications operators.
“Gone, but not forgotten” is the impetus behind BSO's dedicated Cold Case Unit. Formed in 2019, the unit offers increased attention to unsolved cases, and this year the unit had incredible successes. In one instance, we identified and criminally charged a man known as the Pillowcase Rapist, who was responsible for many sexual assaults in the 1980s. In another, the unit solved the 1994 rape and murder of an 89-year-old woman. We also launched an exclusive Cold Case video series to uncover possible new leads and bring more exposure to these investigations. I encourage you to take some time to view the series on the Broward Sheriff's Office YouTube channel: https://www.youtube. com/c/BrowardSheriffsOffice. If you have any information about these crimes, please contact Broward Crime Stoppers at (954) 493-TIPS(8477).
STAFF TRAINING AND EDUCATION
Training and education are paramount for operational preparedness and excellence
in service. In 2022, BSO partnered with local universities to expand higher edu cation opportunities for all personnel and increased participation in executive-level training courses. As sheriff, I must lead by example. This year, I was selected to participate in and completed the FBI's prestigious National Executive Institute Leadership Course. I am also currently pursuing my Ph.D. at Nova Southeastern University. As an organization, we are on a mission to become the most academically credentialed agency in the state.
This year, we finalized plans for BSO's state-of-the-art training center, broke ground, and construction crews are making tremendous progress. Upon completion, the 100,000+ square-foot facility will be the first dedicated onsite training facility in our organization's 107-year history. It will elevate our preparedness and enhance our public safety services to the Broward County community. Follow our progress on our Facebook and Instagram, @ browardsheriffsoffice.
As we head into the holiday season, you will continue to see BSO out safeguarding your neighborhoods and getting to know our residents. Stop by and say hello!
On behalf of BSO's men and women, have a happy and safe holiday season! We'll see you in the new year.

COUNTDOWN TO A STRESS-FREE 2023
By Andrea L. Jakob, Esq.
Estate planning can be an unsettling process, but it is a blueprint for "peace of mind." Everyone from Uber drivers to the Uber wealthy should have a plan in place. While many believe it is only for the elderly, your plan should be in place at any age. We want to protect our lives, our autonomy, and our future to enjoy the years to come worry-free. Here are 6 ways to enjoy a stress-free 2023!
6.- Complete Health Care Directives.
Unless your wishes are explicitly in writing and legally sufficient, doctors and hospitals are not required to follow your wishes. Medical personnel are not legally bound to listen to your loved ones, even if "they know what you would want." In fact, it is forbidden to speak to your loved ones without the necessary HIPAA Release in place. Ensure every required healthcare document, including a Health Care Surrogacy, is completed and readily available to your loved ones.
5.- Appoint a Durable Power of Attorney.
This is potentially your most important document. Your POA "Agent" is someone you would trust your life with … literally. While deciding who should be your POA, you must be comfortable with them handling all financial matters. You should get the help of an attorney, as the laws are constantly evolving and state-specific. In Florida, it must be witnessed, notarized, and have specific provisions initialed.
4.- Review any Will or Trust Over 5 Years or Sign a New One
Surprisingly, most Americans do not have a will. Under Florida law, if you do not execute a will, your assets will be distributed in Probate Court according to the Laws of Intestacy, which may be pricey and overwhelming. 1,001 things can go wrong without a Will and/or Revocable Living Trust. It must be legally sufficient to allow your property to pass without concern. Most importantly, YOU need to be comfortable with it.
3.-Make sure your Beneficiaries are up to date.
The number one reason an estate lands in probate is for assets missing a beneficiary. Sometimes a named beneficiary will pass before the account owner or is no longer a loved one. Recently Suntrust merged with Truist. I had a client whose beneficiary designations on her investment accounts, now held by Truist, were missing! Check each of your accounts annually.
2.- Remember your furry friends.
For many of us, our pets are considered part of the family. If something were to happen to you, who would you trust to take care of your fur baby? How will they pay for their care? Florida Law allows you to create a pet trust- Problem solved!
1.- Keep control of Digital Assets and Accounts.
More frequently, we conduct business online. What happens to online assets and accounts after you die or lose capacity? Create a list of your online accounts and digital devices with access information for your family.
It will be spring before we know it, and another year will pass without accomplishing your goals. Contact an Estate Planning attorney to help you reach these goals without stress! Remember, as with anything, start small, and you can check off these to-dos step by step.

Holiday Safety Tips
By District Chief Todd Draizin
December is known for festive cele brations, flickering lights, and festive holiday season displays. It’s a time when we proudly display our holiday dec orations while sharing precious moments with family, neighbors, and friends. It can also be a time of a greater fire risk that can quickly turn this festive season into a devastating one. Fortunately, with added awareness, the season can remain joyful and safe for everybody.
According to the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA), Christmas and New Year’s Eve are notoriously known as the holidays with the most significant number of house fires. During this season, on average, Fire Rescue agencies across the United States respond to over 450 cooking fires per day, 860 home fires caused by decorations, and greater than 300 fires caused by candles.
Vehicle accidents account for the highest fatality rates among all transportation types. According to the National Safety Council, in 2020, an estimated 762 people died on New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day
Here are some tips to help you and your family enjoy the 2022 holiday season and ring in 2023 safely.
Cooking - Unattended cooking is the leading cause of home fires and related injuries, with most involving the stovetop.
▸ Please stay in the kitchen while fry ing, grilling, or broiling food; turn it off whenever you leave the kitchen.
▸ Keep anything that can catch fire away from the stovetop, such as oven mitts, wooden utensils, and towels.
▸ Keep a lid nearby when you’re cooking to smother small grease fires. If a fire occurs, slide the lid over the pan, turn off the stovetop and call 911. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled.
▸ If a fire happens inside your oven, turn off the heat, keep the door closed, and call 911.
Candles - December is the peak month for home candle fires.
▸ Consider using flameless candles, which look and smell like real candles.
▸ When burning real candles, keep them at least 12 inches away from anything that can burn, and remember to blow
them out when you leave the room or go to bed.
▸ Avoid using candles in the bedroom – where more than one-third of home candle fires begin – or other areas where people may fall asleep.
▸ Never leave a child or pet alone in a room with a burning candle.
Christmas Trees – Of the 230 home fires caused by Christmas trees per year, one in every three is caused by electrical problems, and one in six results from a heat source too close to the tree.
▸ Be sure to water it daily and remove the tree once dry.
▸ Ensure your tree is not blocking an exit and is at least three feet away from any heat source.
▸ Use indoor lights labeled with the independent testing laboratory, such as Underwriters Laboratory, and have the UL stamp.
▸ Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed.
Road Safety -. The most significant con tributing causes are alcohol, speeding, and distracted driving.
▸ Adults consuming alcohol should always have a designated driver or alternative safe transportation.
▸ Drivers can help ensure their safety as well as the safety of others by committing to distraction-free driving.
▸ No texting/emailing or web surfing while driving,
▸ Avoid cell phone use while driving. If you must use a cell phone, utilize hands-free options to help you stay focused on the road.
▸ Know where you are going before you leave. Plan your trip before it starts.
▸ Follow the posted speed limits From our home to yours, the Broward Sheriff’s Office Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services wishes you and your family a happy and safe holiday season and a healthy New Year.
▸ For more information, please contact District Chief Todd Draizin at Fire Station 81 at 954-389-2021 or by email at Todd_Draizin@Sheriff.org.

It’s Small Business Season! By now you’ve likely seen the statistics that shopping locally keeps roughly $70 out of every $100 in our community, whereas shopping at a national chain means about $40 remains here. What does it mean to you and your family? A lot more than you may think.
When the business spends locally on what they need to do business (like inventory, utilities, and payroll), that has a direct impact on the local economy. While chains are typically limited by corporate on where they can source their goods, a small business owner can choose to keep some of those purchases local. An indirect impact is also felt when that owner and their employees spend their profits locally as well.
But more than that, when your child has a school expense like a club trip or sporting event, it's your local small business owner that is usually asked to chip in.
