Until recently, sufferers of chronic or recurrent sinusitis were limited to two treatment options: medication therapy or aggressive sinus surgery. Fortunately, advances in medical science have opened new doors for treatment.

What is balloon sinuplasty?

What is patient-controlled analgesia?

If you suffer from poor sinus drainage, you already know that antibiotics, decongestants, and steroids can only do so much. Balloon sinus dilation is a simple office procedure that gently expands the natural sinus openings to fix underlying drainage problems.

Patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) is any form of pain-relieving medicine administered at a patient’s immediate demand. The most common form of use is intravenous delivery of opioid medications, but other medications and routes of delivery can be used as well.

Until recently, sufferers of chronic or recurrent sinusitis were limited to two treatment options: medication therapy or aggressive sinus surgery. Fortunately, advances in medical science have opened new doors for treatment. Now there’s a treatment option that can be performed in a doctor’s office without the need for cutting or tissue removal.

PCA is a safe and accepted method of pain management due to sophisticated infuser technology that allows the patient to push a button that immediately delivers the pain medication. One PCA safety feature is the programming of the pump to limit the amount of medicine based on dosage and time, as directed by the treating physician. Another safety feature is allowing only the patient to push the button that delivers the medication. This prevents an overdose and allows for good pain control with less medication.

Balloon sinus dilation is a minimally invasive office procedure performed under local anesthesia that delivers immediate and long-lasting relief. A doctor reshapes the sinus pathways by inflating small balloons in key places in the nose and sinuses, restoring drainage. What is mesothelioma? Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that can grow from any organ’s lining, but usually starts in the pleura, or lining of the lungs. Mesothelioma is associated with asbestos and other occupational exposures. Symptoms are typically slow in onset and nonspecific, such as chest pain, dyspnea (shortness of breath), cough, hoarseness, or trouble swallowing. Chest imaging will show thickening of the lung’s lining and fluid around the lung, called a pleural effusion. The diagnosis is made by removing some of the fluid and determining if cancer cells are present, although sometimes a biopsy by a surgeon is necessary. Mesothelioma is rarely curable, and treatment often includes chemotherapy. Emily Jenkins, MD

A number of eye conditions can result in seeing halos while driving at night. In fact, millions of Americans have difficulty seeing at night. Your first step is to see your eye care professional. If the problem is a refractive error, your eye physician can prescribe eyeglasses with anti-reflective coatings. Ask about lenses with wavefront diagnostic technology, which may reduce halos, glare, and other aberrations that can be distracting, especially while driving at night.

...millions of Americans have difficulty seeing at night. Your first step is to see your eye care professional.

– David Harman, MD

12

I see “halos” around lights while driving at night. What can I do to improve my night vision while driving?

Night vision can also be negatively affected by cataracts, which occur when the natural lens in your eye becomes cloudy. During surgery, the cataract is removed and replaced with an intraocular lens implant. Cataract surgery is a safe and effective procedure, and new advancements such as laser cataract surgery and premium intraocular lenses may offer even better visual outcomes to help improve your quality of life. What causes hives? Hives, or welts, especially of the chronic variety, are quite common. Acute hives can often be caused by either airborne or food allergies, or by triggers such as drug or bee sting allergies. In some people, hives can result from other physical triggers such as heat or cold, pressure, sweating, or sunlight. Sometimes viral infections can also lead to acute hives. Chronic hives, generally defined as hives occurring over a period of more than six weeks, affects about 5 percent of the population. This is now known to be an autoimmune problem in the majority of cases, meaning the immune system produces an abnormal antibody, which then signals the allergy cells to cause hives. While hives is a common condition that causes much frustration and distress, it is not life-threatening and can generally be easily controlled with appropriate medications. Saju Eapen, MD

What are some treatment options for age or sun spots? Today, there are several treatment options for minimizing the appearance of sun spots: Medications: Hydroquinone or prescription bleaching creams, used alone or with retinoids (tretinoin) and a mild steroid, may gradually fade sun spots over a period of several months. Freezing (cryotherapy): This procedure involves applying liquid nitrogen or a freezing agent to destroy the extra pigment. Freezing is characteristically used on a single age spot or a small group of age spots. Laser and intense pulsed light therapy: Laser and intense pulsed light therapies demolish melaninproducing cells (melanocytes) without harming the skin’s surface. Treatments with a laser or intense pulsed light typically require several sessions. Chemical peel: A chemical peel involves applying an acid that burns the outer layer of the skin, where new skin then forms, replacing the outer layer. Numerous treatments may be necessary before there are noticeable results. Dermabrasion: This procedure entails sanding down the superficial layer of the skin with a rapidly rotating brush. Temporary redness and scabbing may form as a result of this procedure. Kappa Meadows, MD

Mean Growing Concern words | TINA JOYCE

The road to motherhood begins long before the birth of the child. Women of different ages and backgrounds sacrifice their bodies, time, and rest to ensure the health of their unborn babies. There is no shortage of unsolicited advice given by family members and complete strangers to women who are trying to become pregnant or expecting their first children. However, there are many proactive women who are trying to alleviate worry and risk by seeking wise counsel on pregnancy concerns early in the process. Technology, social media and the abundant available information make having a healthy pregnancy and preparing a mother’s body for the rigorous road ahead seem easier. However, a lingering concern for some women is whether or not they will develop gestational diabetes. Diabetes is a condition in which the body does not properly process food for use as energy. Most of the food we eat is turned into glucose, or sugar, for our bodies to use as energy. The insulin-producing pancreas makes the hormone to help glucose penetrate the cells of the body; it also helps manage blood sugar levels. When a person has diabetes, the body either doesn’t produce enough insulin or cannot use its own effectively, causing a sugar buildup in the blood.1 There are two types of diabetes, type 1 and type 2. Type 1 diabetes is caused by genetics and other unknown factors; type 2 is caused by genetics and lifestyle. Pregnant women who have never had diabetes before, but who have high blood glucose (sugar) levels during pregnancy due to not producing enough insulin, are said to have gestational diabetes mellitus, also known as GDM.2

www.OurHealthlbss.com

21

SYMPTOMS OF

GESTATIONAL DIABETES MELLITUS (GDM) The symptoms of GDM might be difficult to notice at first, but may include:

Unusual thirst

According to the American Pregnancy Association: Approximately 2-5 percent of pregnant women develop gestational diabetes; this number may increase to 7-9 percent of mothers who are more likely to have risk factors. The screening for this disease usually takes place between the 24th and 28th week of pregnancy. Doctors test for gestational diabetes during this time because the placenta is producing large amounts of hormones that may cause insulin resistance. If the results indicate elevated levels, further testing would be done to confirm a gestational diabetes diagnosis.

During pregnancy, a woman’s body not only makes more hormones – her existing hormone levels change. These changes, in addition to other changes such as weight gain, cause her body to use insulin less effectively, thus increasing the need for more insulin. William A. Cook III, MD, FACOG of Johnson Health Center in Lynchburg explains, “Most patients are asymptomatic, but some experience excessive thirst, frequent urination, and food cravings (especially sweets).”

Sugar in urine (revealed in a doctor’s check-up)

Dr. Cook continues, “All patients are screened with an initial serum glucose at the onset of pregnancy care and then a one-hour glucose screen at about 28 weeks of pregnancy. If the one-hour glucose screen is abnormal, then a three-hour GTT is done to obtain the diagnosis.” Although the American Diabetes Association confirms that professionals do not know the exact cause of gestational diabetes, they do offer suggestions to lower the risks for mothers of developing the condition during pregnancy.

Fatigue or nausea (common with many pregnancies)

Women can greatly reduce their risk of developing GDM by improving their daily habits prior to becoming pregnant. Being more active and quitting smoking are two low-cost initiatives that not only improve a woman’s own health, but also the health of her unborn baby. Simply shedding a few pounds (if a woman is over 20 percent her ideal body weight) prior to becoming pregnant can increase her self-esteem, lower her blood pressure and stress, and decrease her likelihood of developing GDM.

Frequent bladder or vaginal infections

In terms of developing gestational diabetes, “The biggest risks are large babies (fetal macrosomia) and hypoglycemia in the baby after birth. If GDM is severe or poorly controlled, then risk of small babies and an association with stillbirths exists. We monitor our patients very closely with antenatal testing and try to deliver them early (39 weeks) if possible,” explains Dr. Cook. Larger birth weights may also lead to delivery risks, such as injures to the infant’s shoulders and arms. Additionally, women who develop gestational diabetes have an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life, as do their children.3 The treatment for patients with gestational diabetes is a collaborative effort between the patient, the obstetrician, possibly a nurse practitioner or midwife, and a dietician. An effective treatment plan always includes a strategic meal plan and routine physical activity.

Blurred vision

22

“Most patients return to normal after they deliver, but some may have been diabetic prior to their pregnancy, so all should be checked at their postpartum visit to make sure the concern is resolved. There is definitely a higher risk of developing GDM later

OurHealth | The Resource for Healthy Living in Lynchburg and Southside

Women who are at risk of developing

“We treat patients with gestational diabetes first through education and diet modification. Patients are given a glucometer to check their blood sugars. If after diet changes the blood sugars are still elevated, then oral hypoglycemic agents and/or insulin are used to gain blood sugar control. There is no real way other than trying to be weight conscious to prevent GDM.”

GESTATIONAL DIABETES are those who:

WILLIAM A. COOK III, MD, FACOG is an OB-GYN with Johnson Health Center in

Lynchburg. Dr. Cook is certified by the American Board of Obstetrics & Gynecology. Are overweight

in life, which may not be preventable. However, good exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and proper diet can all help keep it from occurring,” reminds Dr. Cook. A well-balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables and lean proteins (such a chicken or fish) combined with moderate exercise will help improve the overall health of any individual. A woman who is looking to improve her own health as well as that of her unborn child should consult her doctor for the steps to implement a safe plan that achieves long-term results. Women going into pregnancy with a healthy lifestyle are more likely to return to a healthy weight after delivery in addition to reducing their risk of developing gestational diabetes. A pregnant woman’s growing belly is a beautiful gift, but it can also lead to increased worries and concern. By working together with her healthcare team before, during, and after pregnancy, a woman can successfully manage complications that occur during pregnancy, resulting in the birth of a healthy baby.

According to the American Diabetic Association, a healthy meal plan for people with diabetes (or gestational diabetes) is generally the same as a healthy diet for anyone – one that is low in saturated and trans-fat, moderate in salt and sugar, and includes meals based on lean protein, non-starchy vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats and fruit.

HEALTH TIPS FOR THE

Holidays

words | DEIDRE WILKES

It’s natural to indulge a bit during the holiday season – the trick is not to let it ‘snowball’ out of control and into the New Year. Just a few simple tips can have you ringing in 2017 happy and healthy!

1. Ditch the Scale Weight can fluctuate from day to day – especially when eating certain foods that are common during the holiday season. Make a pact to put your scale away until well AFTER the holidays have passed and your routine is back to normal.

3. Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff

2. Never Leave the House Hungry During the holidays, there is food, food, everywhere! Whether you’re running errands, shopping for gifts, or out on the town at a party, make sure to eat a healthy snack before you leave. This will keep you from grabbing fast food on the go or overindulging at restaurants or parties. Some great ideas for snacks are carrot or celery sticks, fruit and nuts.

Stress can have a major impact on weight and even trigger emotional eating, so don’t let it get to you! Carve out a few minutes each day for ‘me’ time. Doing anything from meditating to taking a power nap or a bubble bath to listening to soothing music may help you relax during this stressful season.

4. Instant Leftovers Most restaurant portions are much more than a single serving. When your meal arrives, immediately separate the food in half and ask the server for a box. As soon as the box arrives, place half of your meal in it. You instantly saved both calories and money, as you now have lunch or dinner for the next day!

5. Do the ‘Mall Crawl’ Holiday shopping is often a necessary evil, but you can work it into your fitness routine. After going from store to store, take some time to walk from one end of the mall to the other without stopping. If you shop at a multi-level mall, take the stairs and walk from end to end on each level. If you’re carrying shopping bags, use them to do some arm curls to help tone your upper body. www.OurHealthlbss.com

SERVICES At Central Virginia Orthodontics, we take pride in providing exceptional smiles for every member of your family. Our experienced team has one mission: to serve you by delivering the finest orthodontic treatment available in a caring and fun environment. Dr. Eric Baugher and Dr. Jennifer Claiborne lead our dedicated team.

WHY ORTHODONTICS? Braces are an investment that will benefit you for the rest of your life. An improved smile helps build self-esteem, establishes facial balance and ideal function for your teeth and jaws, and allows for better long-term oral health. Our goal is for every patient to achieve a beautiful, healthy smile that will last for a lifetime.

KIDS AND ADULTS At Central Virginia Orthodontics, not only do we provide families with the highest caliber of service, our state-of-the-art practice offers treatments ranging from traditional metal braces to the newest technologies such as Invisalign, clear braces and selfligating braces. We excel in creating beautiful, healthy smiles for patients of all ages. In fact, approximately 20 percent of our patients are adults.

WHY IS AGE 7 CONSIDERED THE OPTIMAL TIME FOR SCREENING? By the age of 7, the first adult molars erupt, establishing the back bite. During this time, an orthodontist can evaluate frontto-back and side-to-side tooth relationships. For example, the presence of erupting incisors can indicate possible overbite, open bite, crowding or gummy smiles. Timely screening increases the chances for an incredible smile.

FREE CONSULTATION! If you would like to discuss what options are available to you for improving your smile, call Central Virginia Orthodontics for a complimentary consultation at your convenience. We look forward to helping you see the smile you’ve always wanted!

BE PROACTIVE! Oral health is very important. Ignoring preventative dental care can have a negative impact on overall health. The best way to avoid dental problems is to take a proactive approach to dental care. Dental hygiene appointments should be scheduled every six months and it is important to brush and floss daily. We offer an exceptional hygiene department and cutting edge dental technology that allows Dr. Claiborne to diagnose and develop a treatment plan that offers the best options for each individual patient.

SEDATION DENTISTRY: It is not unusual for people to feel fear when they need to visit a dentist. However, there are some people who experience panic attacks and intense anxiety during these visits. These are the situations where sedation dentistry can help. This specific type of dentistry relies on the use of anesthesia or special pharmaceutical drugs during the dental treatment in order to calm and relax the patient. Forest Smiles offers three types of sedation, from the lightest form (nitrous oxide) to the moderate form (IV sedation).

SHARED TIP Please continue to floss! Flossing is a low-risk, potentially high-reward act that can decrease cavities and gum disease. You simply can’t remove plaque between your teeth using a toothbrush.

TESTIMONY “My dental implant experiences exceeded my expectations. Dr. Claiborne provided a thorough examination, then took the time to explain what needed to be done, how he would proceed with the process, and the length of time involved for the implants. He gives his patients the opportunity to ask questions.” – Irene C.

Before and after photos showing full mouth rehabilitation of severely worn and broken teeth. With the help of great lab work, Dr. Claiborne was able to restore function and aesthetics.

WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT YOUR PRACTICE?

Proudly Serving Central and Southwest Virginia

SERVICE LOCATIONS: 101 Candlewood Court | Lynchburg | 434.363.4190 278 Westlake Road | Smith Mtn. Lake | 540.759.7500 300 Enterprise Drive, Suite E | Forest | 434.333.7370 www.RidgeViewDermatology.com

SERVICES AND PROCEDURES »» Mohs Skin Cancer Surgery »» Comprehensive General Dermatology, including complete skin exams and cancer screenings and treatment of complex skin conditions and rashes »» Pediatric and Adolescent Dermatology, provided by Lynchburg’s only board-certified Pediatric Dermatologist »» Full-spectrum Aesthetic Dermatology, including CoolSculpting, miraDry, injectables such as Botox and dermal fillers, chemical peels, and much more!

WHAT IS MOST REWARDING ABOUT YOUR WORK? The most rewarding aspect of my work is meeting a patient with a new diagnosis of skin cancer, speaking with them about their diagnosis and treatment options, and being able to provide specialized treatment with a greater than 98-99 percent cure rate for the most common types of skin cancer.

A major factor that sets RidgeView Dermatology apart is the comprehensive care that we are able to offer, since our providers are board-certified and fellowship-trained in General Dermatology, Mohs Skin Cancer Surgery, and Pediatric and Adolescent Dermatology.

SHARED TIP To every patient I see, I recommend the daily use of a broadspectrum sunscreen with coverage for UVA/UVB rays of SPF 30 or higher. It is a common misconception that sunscreen only needs to be worn when a patient will be spending time outside on a hot, sunny day. In fact, many of the sun’s most harmful rays reach the earth consistently year-round, coming through clouds and windows. Daily sunscreen use protects against cumulative UV radiation exposure and monumentally decreases the risk of developing skin cancers and the aging effects of the sun.

CAREER MILESTONES Following his dermatology residency training, Dr. Jason Givan completed a specialty fellowship in Mohs Skin Cancer Surgery & Cutaneous Oncology at the University of Massachusetts. In 2011, he brought this specialized surgical procedure to Lynchburg. After his arrival, patients no longer needed to travel long distances to have access to this highly effective skin cancer treatment. Most recently, Dr. Givan has begun providing this advanced surgical care at RidgeView Dermatology’s Smith Mountain Lake office, so he now serves patients in an even greater geographical area.

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD? Our goal for the future of RidgeView Dermatology is to continue to provide exceptional care while expanding to meet the needs of Lynchburg and other communities in the region

OUR MISSION AT RIDGEVIEW DERMATOLOGY IS TO PROVIDE TIMELY ACCESS TO EXCELLENT, FULL-SPECTRUM DERMATOLOGIC CARE.

SERVICES Lynchburg’s only accredited compounding pharmacy

FROM THE BEGINNING For the Ettare’s, a big-box, chain pharmacy would not allow them sufficient time to connect the dots between the patient’s needs, the prescriber, and the cost of medications. That’s the mantra that inspired Drs. Vince and Jodi Ettare to open their first family pharmacy in 2007, followed by Rustburg Family Pharmacy in 2009, and the recently opened, Timberlake Family Pharmacy in 2016. Together with fellow pharmacist, co-owner, Ed Breslow, the Ettares hope to serve the community with trusted compounding pharmacy services and the hometown comforts of a family run business.

WHAT IS A COMPOUNDING PHARMACY? Pharmacy compounding is the art and science of combining, mixing, or altering the ingredients of a drug to create a medication that is tailored specifically to the needs of an individual patient. Compounded medications are made based on a provider’s prescription with individual ingredients being mixed together in the exact strength and dosage required by the patient.

WHAT IS PATIENT COMPLIANCE PACKAGING? Timberlake Family Pharmacy offers patients compliance packaging to help eliminate prescription confusion. The pharmacists at Timberlake study the patient’s daily medication regimen and place pills in bubble packs, clearly labeled with when each medication is supposed to be taken.

MORE THAN A PHARMACY! Not only is Timberlake Pharmacy the place to fill your prescription, you can also watch the process in action through the windows to the lab. Additionally, the pharmacy offers a convenient drive-thru and delivery service to the Lynchburg area. Finally, Timberlake Pharmacy also offers a full-service vintage soda fountain and hosts a broad line of natural and organic supplements, skin care, and makeup including BareMinerals.

DIRECTIONS

Heat oven to 250 degrees. Peel potatoes and coarsely grate, then place in a large bowl of cold water. Soak potatoes for 1 to 2 minutes after you finish the grating, then drain them well in a colander. Spread potatoes and onion on a kitchen towel and roll them it up, twisting towel tightly to remove as much liquid as possible. Transfer mixture to a bowl and stir in egg and salt. Heat ¼ cup oil in a 12-inch nonstick skillet over medium high heat. Working in batches of four latkes, spoon 2 tablespoons potato mixture per latke into skillet, spreading into 3-inch rounds with a fork. Reduce heat to medium and cook until undersides are browned, about 5 minutes. Flip latkes over and cook until both sides are browned, about 5 minutes more. Transfer to paper towels to drain and season with salt. Add more oil to skillet as needed. Keep latkes warm on a wire rack set in a shallow baking pan in the oven.

DIRECTIONS Heat oven to 400 degrees. Cut the spaghetti squash in half lengthwise and remove seeds. Season with salt and pepper. Roast in the oven, cut-side up for 40 minutes or until tender. Set aside. In a medium skillet, sauté the onion and jalapeño over medium heat in ½ tablespoon coconut oil until softened. Meanwhile, scrape out the cooked spaghetti squash from its skin and combine the squash, egg, almond flour and parsley in a large bowl. Once onion and jalapeno are tender, add them to the squash mixture. Using a spoon, scoop a generous amount of the squash mixture into your hands and form into patties (will make about 16 patties). Lightly flatten. Make sure you shape all of your patties before heating the pan. Using the same skillet as before, generously apply olive oil spray to the entire pan, then place four to five patties on the skillet and allow to brown on both sides (about 2 minutes on each side). Carefully transfer latke onto a paper towel-lined cooling rack and repeat until all patties are cooked. Top with parsley as desired.

Eating right and shedding extra weight are often part of the plan to improve one’s health. That’s because being overweight or obese plays a major role in many chronic conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and sleep disorders. Even if you haven’t reached your weight-loss goal, every pound that you drop improves your health. That’s an accomplishment well-worth celebrating.

Losing as little as 5 to 10 percent of your weight can reduce your cholesterol levels, decrease your risk of developing type 2 diabetes, and lower your blood pressure. Cholesterol is a big deal because high levels of “bad” cholesterol, known as low-density lipoprotein (LDL), can build up in the walls of your arteries, forming a plaque that makes the arteries hard and narrow. If the plaque tears or ruptures, a blood clot could form, blocking blood flow or breaking loose and plugging an artery. If the blood flow to part of your heart stops, that’s a heart attack. If a clot blocks blood flow to part of your brain, it’s a stroke. Decreasing your risk of developing type 2 diabetes is also a major accomplishment because the disease can cause so many health problems. In type 2 diabetes, the pancreas loses its ability to produce enough insulin to properly control the blood sugar, called glucose, which powers the body’s cells. Over time, high blood sugar will damage your nerves and blood vessels, which can lead to heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, blindness, dental disease, and even amputations. High blood pressure also hurts your blood vessels. It can make your artery walls stiff and create the plaque that can lead to heart attacks or strokes. The narrowing of arteries caused by plaque, furthermore, can also cause kidney failure, dementia, eye damage, and even problems having sex, according to the Mayo Clinic.

The strain on your heart from high blood pressure, moreover, can cause your heart to weaken and work less efficiently. Eventually, your heart will begin to wear out — a condition known as heart failure.

High blood pressure also can cause aneurysms, says the Mayo Clinic. This happens when the constant pressure of blood moving through a weakened artery causes part of its wall to bulge out. If that bulge ruptures, it causes internal bleeding, which can be deadly. That’s not all, though — in fact, losing weight offers many other reasons to celebrate as well. It reduces the chances that you’ll get osteoarthritis arthritis, which is caused by wear and tear on the joints, and it can ease the condition if you already have it. Additionally, extra pounds put extra stress on weight-bearing joints like the knees and hips. When you walk across level ground, the force on your knees equals one-anda-half times your body weight, says Harvard Medical School’s HEALTHbeat. That means that a 200-pound man will put 300 pounds of pressure on his knees with each step. As if that wasn’t enough, the force on each knee increases to two to three times your body weight when you go up and down stairs and four to five times your body weight when you squat to tie a shoelace or to pick up something from the floor — so shedding a few pounds can go a long way toward reducing the pressure on your joints and protecting them.

How does reaching an ideal weight reduce the negative impact on joints? We are all wonderfully made. Our bones glide back and forth easily in our joints due to the amazing gliding and shockabsorbing characteristics of cartilage. But our cartilage is made up of living cells that are highly susceptible to trauma. Trauma can be abrupt, like what happens when you fall and land on a hard surface. Trauma can also come from slow, repetitive injury, as happens with excessive pressure during daily activities. The knee is especially susceptible. When we climb a set of stairs, the front part of our knee experiences pressures in excess of seven times (7x) our body weight. If a person’s ideal body weight is 160-lbs and they carry just 10-lbs of extra body fat, then his or her knee experiences 70-lbs of extra stress with stair climbing. It’s hard not to over-consume and under-exercise in our busy, modern lives; but, as you can see, every little bit of weight loss counts! IAN R. SMITHSON, MD Orthopaedic Surgeon | OrthoVirginia Lynchburg | 434.485.8500 www.orthovirginia.com

It also can help you get a good night’s sleep. The risk of developing sleep apnea is four times higher for people who are obese than for people of normal weight, says the Mayo Clinic. Sleep apnea is a potentially serious disorder in which your breathing repeatedly stops and starts while sleeping. Signs of sleep apnea include snoring loudly and feeling tired even after a full night's sleep. The good news is that weight loss helps reduce the severity of obstructive sleep apnea, the most common type of the disorder.

Collecting the Rewards of Exercise Physical activity is part of healthy living. If you’ve worked it into your daily or weekly routine, you’re helping your body in ways that you might not even realize. You should give yourself credit for that. We all know that exercise helps us to lose weight, but did you know that it can also benefit your brain? Exercise can improve memory and thinking, reduce the risk of depression and dementia, and improve your mood.

When a person reduces his/her “bad” cholesterol, how does this positively impact his/her health? When a person with high LDL (bad cholesterol) adopts a healthy lifestyle including regular exercise (>150 minutes of moderate exertion weekly) and good dietary choices, there can be up to a 30 percent reduction in LDL cholesterol. Those who do this are 40 percent less likely to suffer from a heart attack or stroke. JASON HIGEY, MD CMG Stroobants Cardiovascular Center Lynchburg | 434.200.5252 www.centrahealth.com

Additionally, according to the National Cancer Institute, exercise lowers the risk of developing heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke and type 2 diabetes. Studies have also found that physical activity can reduce the chances of developing colon, breast and endometrial cancers. www.OurHealthlbss.com

How does maintaining a healthy sleep regimen improve overall long-term wellness? Having a healthy sleep regimen is one of the foundations for overall health. Sleep deprivation has been shown to be detrimental on many levels. Poor sleep leads to an increased risk of medical problems such as hypertension, mental health issues such as anxiety and depression, and causes memory problems. REM sleep is necessary to form new memories. We recommend patients develop a regular sleep schedule that they follow seven days per week that includes a routinely set bedtime and waketime. We recommend at least seven hours of sleep nightly. Having a dark quiet room free of light and distraction is also important. JOE KHOURY, MD Lynchburg Pulmonary Associates, Sleep Services Lynchburg | 434.947.3963 www.lynchburgpulmonary.com

Regular exercise helps to keep bones, muscles and joints healthy. Even though exercising might seem like the last thing that people with arthritis should do, it actually helps them by increasing their strength and flexibility and reducing their joint pain, notes the Mayo Clinic. If you have arthritis, you should work with your doctor to figure out what types of exercises are best for you. For seniors, exercise and physical activity improve endurance, strength, balance and flexibility, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). These benefits can help you stay strong and fit enough to perform your daily activities and maintain your independence. As people age, they run the risk of developing osteoporosis, a condition that could weaken their bones to the point where they easily break. Doing weight-bearing exercises three to four times per week helps to prevent osteoporosis. Want to sleep better? Exercise plays a role there, too. Regular physical activity can help you fall asleep faster and deepen your sleep. Not unexpectedly, finally, people who exercise have more energy in general. That’s because exercise and physical activity deliver oxygen and nutrients to your tissues and help your heart work more efficiently, says the Mayo Clinic. When your heart and lungs work better, you have more energy to go about your daily life.

Health Buzz from Kicking the Habit

How does quitting smoking improve a person’s lung capacity, e.g., when you quit smoking, how soon does the body begin to realize the short-term and long-term improvement to the lungs? Giving up smoking is among the best things you can do for yourself. Inflammation in the breathing passages starts to get better within a few days and continues to improve over a period of 10-12 weeks. That means less coughing and mucus. Reduced inflammation of the upper breathing passages improves your sense of smell and taste, which means things will taste better. Over the long-term, your risk of stroke, heart attack, lung cancer, and emphysema are much lower as well. ALBERT BAKER, MD Lynchburg Pulmonary Associates, Inc. Lynchburg | 434.947.3963 www.lynchburgpulmonary.com

82

OurHealth | The Resource for Healthy Living in Lynchburg and Southside

Smoking is a hard habit to break, thanks to nicotine’s addictive properties. If you’ve quit the habit or never taken up smoking, your body is reaping enormous benefits. It’s common knowledge that smoking causes lung cancer, but it also increases the chances of getting many more types of cancer — like cancers of the blood, bladder, cervix, colon, esophagus, kidneys, larynx, liver, mouth, nose, rectum, throat and uterus, says the NIH. Over time, your decision to quit will help reduce your risk of developing all of these. After you stop smoking, furthermore, you begin to breathe more easily and your smoker’s cough starts to go away. But why? The answer is that our lungs are made of tubes that branch out into small sacs. Smoking causes these sacs to lose their elasticity, which prevents them from taking in as much oxygen. That’s why smokers feel short of breath, a condition called emphysema. Normally, the lungs protect themselves with a thin layer of mucus and by moving toxic particles out with small hairs, called cilia. According to the Quit Smoking Community, smoking makes the cilia move slower and struggle to remove harmful particles. The lungs become irritated from the toxins and collect more mucous, and this triggers smoker’s cough. Over time, smoker’s cough can lead to chronic bronchitis, in which the lining of the tubes in your lungs swells and restricts breathing.

The combination of emphysema and chronic bronchitis is called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). About 20-30 percent of chronic smokers may develop COPD, says the Mayo Clinic. When you quit smoking, your lungs’ sacs and cilia begin to heal, which is why you will start to breathe easier and cough less. Additionally, according to the Mayo Clinic, smoking causes harm all over the body that you might not be able to see. It increases the risk of developing heart disease, strokes, type 2 diabetes and vision problems as well as fertility problems in women and impotence in men. Smoking is also associated with an increased risk of developing inflammation of the gums and serious gum infections that could destroy the support system for teeth. Finally, women who smoke during pregnancy have a higher risk of miscarriage, early delivery, babies with lower birth weights, and sudden infant death syndrome in their newborns.

HOW MUCH ALCOHOL IS TOO MUCH?

Reasonable zone Moderate drinking: Up to one drink per day for women of all ages and men older than age 65; up to two drinks per day for men age 65 and younger. One drink means:

By quitting smoking, you’re lowering your risk of developing all of these serious problems. You’re also improving your looks. The chemicals in tobacco smoke can change the structure of your skin, causing premature aging and wrinkles. Smoking also yellows your teeth, fingers and fingernails. Quitting smoking begins to reverse these effects, letting you start to look much healthier.

Beer: 12 fluid ounces (355 milliliters) Wine: 5 fluid ounces (148 milliliters) Hard liquor (80 proof): 1.5 fluid ounces (44 milliliters)

Drinking Less and Living Better The saying “everything in moderation” applies to alcohol. A little alcohol isn’t likely to cause harm, but a lot of alcohol consumed in one sitting or over time can cause life-altering or life-ending damage. The dangers of driving drunk are obvious — you could injure or kill yourself or others due to your weakened thinking skills and muscle control. Getting drunk, however, also increases your chances of drowning, being a victim of or committing a crime, accidental injury, and having unprotected sex or becoming the victim of sexual abuse or date rape, says the Mayo Clinic. When we think of the long-term harm caused by alcohol abuse, we usually think of liver damage. The liver breaks down alcohol so that it can be removed from the body. Drinking more alcohol than the liver can process damages it over time. This damage comes in the form of three types of liver disease.

Danger zone Heavy drinking: More than three drinks on any day or more than seven drinks per week for all women and men older than age 65; more than four drinks on any day or more than 14 drinks per week for men age 65 and younger. Binge drinking: Four or more drinks within two hours for women and five or more drinks within two hours for men. Source: Mayo Clinic

Alcoholic fatty liver disease, first of all, means that you have too much fat in your liver. It’s the earliest stage of alcohol-related liver disease, says the American Liver Foundation. The damage can be reversed at this point if the person stops drinking alcohol. Alcoholic hepatitis, secondly, means that there are fat deposits in the liver, plus inflammation and mild scarring. Up to 35 percent of heavy drinkers develop alcoholic hepatitis, the foundation says. Mild alcoholic hepatitis can be reversed by giving up alcohol. Severe alcoholic hepatitis can occur suddenly and lead to liver failure and death. www.OurHealthlbss.com

Alcoholic cirrhosis is the most advanced type of alcohol-caused liver injury. It means that the liver has severe scarring. Between 10 and 20 percent of heavy drinkers develop cirrhosis, the foundation says. Cirrhosis can’t be reversed by giving up alcohol, but doing so could improve the symptoms and prevent more damage from occurring. Additionally, heavy drinking can increase the risk of developing some cancers, including cancers of the breast, mouth, throat and esophagus. It can cause stomach, heart, pancreas and eye problems, says the Mayo Clinic. Drinking while pregnant can cause a miscarriage or permanent brain damage and other problems in an unborn child. If you don’t drink or only drink in moderation, you’re protecting yourself and those around you from these dangers. That’s one more accomplishment worth celebrating!
