How do I know what mattress will best support my sleeping position? The right mattress is the first piece of the perfect sleep system. Choosing the right foundation to sleep flat or in a muscle-relaxing zero gravity position is just as essential to a good night’s sleep. Many mattresses may initially feel similar, but support your body differently depending on the base. With technology like ZeeZ from Grand Home Furnishings, our sleep experts can remove the guesswork from this equation. Pressure mapping the body allows us to customize an in-stock sleep set for every person who enters our showroom. Finally, to complete the ideal sleep system, you need the perfect pillow. Everyone at some point has experienced neck or shoulder strain, headaches, and lost sleep from an improper pillow. Whether your sleep style is Armadillo, Cocoon, Cliffhanger, or Log, we have your complete sleep system available.

What are the benefits of a Geriatric Care Manager? A Geriatric Care Manager (GCM) will help you or your loved one maintain independence. The GCM attends doctor appointments to ensure that medical instructions are implemented and communicates with all doctors, specialists, and others involved in caring for the patient to ensure that care is coordinated. The GCM maintains medication lists and medical history and informs healthcare providers of changes in health status. The GCM also: •
Assists with transitions back home after a hospital or nursing home stay
•
Arranges for and monitors inhome helpers
•
Monitors home maintenance and repair needs
•
Assists with bill paying
•
Provides strategies for coping with chronic conditions
•
Acts as a liaison to families in or out of town by communicating changes and alerting them to concerns.
The GCM develops close relationships with clients, who look forward to her friendly visit and her assistance.
How can I tell if my forgetfulness is agerelated or the early signs of dementia or Alzheimer’s? Age-related forgetfulness usually involves something like forgetting to pay a bill, not immediately remembering what day it is, or misplacing things. Dementia, caused by damage to the brain, operates by harming the brain’s system of conveying information regarding normal communication, thinking processes, behaviors, and feelings. When the cells in each region of the brain are damaged, they cannot function normally. The early signs of dementia include poor judgment and decision making, the inability to manage budgets, losing track of the date and season, and the inability to retrace steps when misplacing things. Dementia describes a decline in mental abilities severe enough to interfere with one’s daily life. This term does not refer to a specific disease; instead, it describes a wide range of symptoms. The most common type of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease, which comprises 60 to 80 percent of the existing cases. There are also reversible conditions that can cause the symptoms of dementia, such as thyroid problems, vitamin deficiencies, and depression.

Why is it important to have an on-site Activities Director in a retirement home? Having an on-site Activities Director in a retirement home is crucial for the success of a well-rounded and varied activities program. The state of Virginia requires that all licensed facilities provide 11 or 14 hours (depends upon the license) of activities each week and at least one hour of activities daily. Through training, an Activities Director has gained a working knowledge of age-appropriate activities that are designed to promote or maintain the residents’ highest level of independence while supporting their physical, social, mental and emotional abilities and skills. All residents are encouraged to participate in activities. However, if a resident chooses not to participate, that is his/her right. In today’s world, activities in a retirement home are so much more than Bingo! Sheila Roakes-Peters

What is breath management? Breath management is a term used to describe the treatment or control of halitosis (bad breath). Bad breath most often (but not always) starts in the mouth and can have several causes: insufficient/poor oral hygiene, dry mouth (xerostomia), tobacco products, and fragrant foods like onions and garlic. Bad breath without an origin in the mouth can signal other medical disorders such as respiratory infections, chronic sinusitis, diabetes, GI disturbances, and liver or kidney problems. If you are experiencing problems with bad breath, see your dentist for an evaluation. Poor oral hygiene is easily remedied with proper oral hygiene techniques (brushing, flossing, tongue scraping, etc.) and with the commitment to do better. Your dentist may also prescribe an antibacterial mouth rinse. Many medications, improper salivary gland function, and mouth breathing often cause xerostomia. Treatments for xerostomia range from artificial saliva to sugar-free gum and mints to stimulate salivary flow; try to avoid mouth rinses with alcohol, as they will further dry out the mouth. Fragrant foods can simply be avoided if they are deemed to be the cause for halitosis. Should your dentist determine that your mouth is healthy, you may be referred to a physician for diagnosing the cause of bad breath.

The results from my HPV test came back positive. Does this mean I will develop cervical cancer? HPV (or human papilloma virus) infections are the most common type of sexually transmitted infection. Even if you have this infection, you will not necessarily get cervical cancer. The majority of cervical cancers do involve the presence of the HPV virus, but almost everyone who gets the HPV virus will get rid of the infection themselves or will not have a progression to cervical cancer. You will most likely need more testing over time to see if you have cleared (or fought off) the HPV virus or if the virus has caused changes in your cervical skin cells that could lead to cancer. If you have the HPV infection, stopping smoking, reducing your stress, and eating well are three things that you can do to help fight off the virus. Clair McStacy, Certified Nurse-Midwife

Arthritic Pets words | TINA JOYCE
The cold nose, the loving eyes, and the faithful return all describe man’s best friend. It’s no wonder we seek to offer our canine friends the best care. Many pets, especially large-breed dogs, are prone to developing arthritis. The larger the breed, the more debilitating arthritis can be. The climate in Lynchburg can make getting outdoors in the summer months particularly challenging, due to heat and humidity. There are a few ways to help recognize your pet's arthritis and creatively help him or her move more comfortably. The most obvious sign of arthritis (in both dogs and cats) is limping. Your pet may also begin to move more slowly up steps or down hills. Usually, pets rise tenderly from laying down.
1 2 THE MOST OBVIOUS SIGN OF ARTHRITIS IN PETS IS LIMPING! For the most accurate diagnosis of symptoms and solutions, contact your regular veterinarian who is familiar with your pet’s habits and tendencies.
18
3 4 5
PREVENTION
The best way to keep your pets from suffering from arthritis is to keep them at a healthy weight in the first place.
REDUCE THE POUNDS
Helping your pet lose weight reduces stress on his entire body. This may include utilizing a special type of food, removing a “free will” food options, skipping excess treats, and/or increasing exercise.
GO EASY
As with humans, exercise must be entered into gradually. Choose low-impact activity, with a 5-10 minute warm-up. Swimming is ideal for dogs, as are leisure walks. Avoid rough play or excessive jumping and running, which can lead to significant pain the next day, defeating the purpose.
PAY ATTENTION
Allow your pet to exercise in the cool of the morning or evening and keep a close watch signs of dehydration and unusual fatigue. An adequate cool down helps to reduce the heart rate and stiffness later. A good massage may also be beneficial for sore muscles, not to mention enjoyable for both you and your pooch.
AT LAST
If all natural attempts fail to alleviate your pet’s discomfort, ask your veterinarian about an antiinflammatory medication, such as LTCI (Lymphocyte T-Cell Immunomodulator) or other safe alternatives.

SIMPLE STEPS TO
SUMMER
TRAVEL SUCCESS
BE PREPARED AND CHECK YOUR VEHICLE BEFORE YOU TRAVEL! While today’s vehicles are safer and more reliable than ever, that doesn’t mean that an accident or breakdown can’t happen. Being prepared and checking your vehicle before you travel can help you get back on the road faster when misfortune does strike.
20
Nothing ruins a summer vacation road trip or gets you even hotter during already sweltering temperatures like a vehicle breakdown that leaves you stranded on the side of the road. That’s why it’s important to ensure that both you and your vehicle are prepared for the unexpected before you hit the road this summer. Follow these seven steps to perform a vehicle safety check that will help stop a minor breakdown from becoming a major headache.

TEST THE VEHICLE’S SECURITY SERVICES
Confirm that there’s one in the vehicle and that it’s stocked with the basic emergency supplies.
Useful in the event of an accident or breakdown, a good kit should include jumper cables, flares, reflective roadside triangles/markers, hand tools, tape, a tire inflator and a flashlight.
Know where your tire is, how to access and remove it, and how to check its air pressure. Also, know the location of the jack and how to use it. (Instructions can often be found in the vehicle owner’s manual.)
Always keep water and snacks available, particularly if you’re traveling with children.
If you vehicle experiences a battery failure or other electrical problem, you might not be able to charge your cell phone. Carry a small, external battery pack and charging cord that fit the phone.
Research and save important phone numbers in your cell phone before traveling, including those for AAA and the roadside assistance offered by many vehicle manufacturers.
If your vehicle is equipped with OnStar or a similar service, test it before traveling. These services can provide directions or let you call for help in the event of an emergency. Some services even offer the option of activating and paying for them for short periods, such as during a two-week vacation.

H E A LT H Y GARDEN TIPS
6 Indoor Plants that Produce the Most Oxygen in Your Home words | TINA JOYCE
As we seek ways to purify our homes, examining the air we breathe becomes a critical factor in improving our everyday health and wellness. Indoor air pollution, caused from synthetic building materials, mold, cleaning products, upholstery, and artificial scents can emit a variety of toxins in the air we breathe daily. Researchers are finding ways to reduce pollutants and improve air quality; some solutions are as simple as the everyday houseplant.
SPIDER PLANT
ALOE VERA
SNAKE PLANT
(Aloe barbadensis)
(Sansevieria trifasciata)
(Chlorophytum comosum)
The aloe plant has been known for years for its burn-healing gel within the leaves, a combination of anti-bacterial and antiinflammatory properties. Also, aloe is known to help rid our homes from benzene (found in some chemical cleaners and paint).
Snake plants are low maintenance and offer appealing vertical growth from 1-6 feet. Also, it tends to convert carbon dioxide into oxygen at night, making it ideal bedroom greenery. The snake plant was recommended by a NASA study as one of the top oxygen producing plants and requires little water.
Spider plants are ideal for the novice plant owner because the plants are easy to take care of and remove small amounts of formaldehyde and xylene from our homes. They prefer bright, indirect sunlight and weekly watering.
BAMBOO PALM
WEEPING FIG
PEACE LILY
Bamboo palm thrive in indoor spaces, this plant may grow to more than 10 feet and is pet friendly. It best filters trichloroethylene and benzene but doesn’t thrive if over watered.
Weeping figs reduce pollutants like benzene and formaldehyde, this fig loves indirect sunlight and requires infrequent watering, making it an easy keeper. Also, in warmer months this plant can easily be moved outside for decorative purposes.
Often a beautiful gift, the peace lily offers much more than condolences. By reducing levels of mold spores, this lily is likely to help keep mildew to a minimum. The lily makes it known when it needs watered but be careful not to over water. Peace lilies thrive in bright, indirect light. Be careful of allergies, blooms may contribute to pollen or scents in your home.
(Chamaedorea seifritzii)
(Fiscus benjamina)
One large, or two smaller plants every 100 square feet can significantly improve air quality in our workplaces or homes.

>> Showcasing some of the most authoritative books on how to get and stay healthy In 2015, medicine got a wake up call in the pages of the Journal of the American Medical Association: a 24-year study showed that nearly half of the adults living in the U.S. have diabetes or pre-diabetes, which is a condition in which a person’s blood sugar is elevated and the person is at risk of developing the disease. That’s a lot of people, and publishers have responded by releasing tons of books on the subject. In this issue, we take a look at two of the most approachable sources of general information on diabetes, along with a book examining the Danish approach to well-being.
The American Diabetes Association Complete Guide to Diabetes (5th Ed.) By the American Diabetes Association | 512 Pages
This association has served as America’s most trusted source of information on diabetes for more than 70 years. This book is an encyclopedic, one-volume sourcebook on how to live an active, healthy life with diabetes.
Diabetes for Dummies By Alan L. Rubin, MD | John Wiley & Sons | 432 Pages
Perhaps a “friendlier” read than the ADA guide, this is an equally trustworthy look at up-to-date information about all aspects of diabetes. Significantly revised and updated, the book is an accessible, reliable guide to taking the guesswork out of living with diabetes. A nifty companion piece to this book would be The Diabetes Cookbook for Dummies, by author Rubin and Cait James.
The Little Book of Hygge: Danish Secrets to Happy Living By Meik Wiking | William Morrow | 225 Pages
Lest you think we’ve gone too far afield with this book, consider that it’s been named one of People magazine’s Best Health and Wellness Books of 2017. Hygge (pronounced HOO-ga) loosely translates from the Danish as a sense of comfort and well-being, which after all is the prime benefit of good health. This entertaining little book shows us how to experience joy and contentment the Danish way.

How to Care for Your Skin This Summer words | CHRISTY RIPPEL
The pool, the beach, the backyard — these are all great places to be on a sunny day. But too much sun can cause premature wrinkling, sun spots, sunburn — and, in the worst cases, skin cancer. While wearing sunscreen daily should be a part of your routine, it’s most important when the sun shines brightest in the summer months. Thankfully, the newest sunscreens, clothing and sunglasses can provide excellent protection so that you can safely enjoy your time outside. Even if you think you’ve heard it all before, brush up on your sun IQ before the heat hits this summer, and your skin will thank you!
Just a Mark or Something More Serious? Sun spots — also known as age or liver spots — have nothing to do with your liver, but result from repeated sun exposure on an area of the body. They range in color from white to brown, and, once they appear, they continue to darken or (Continued on page 29...)

Sun Care Cheat Sheet: Apply Sunscreen Early and Ofter
Apply sunscreen daily to all exposed skin, rain or shine. Choose a broad spectrum formula of SPF 30 or higher; generic brands can be just as effective and save you money. Slather on your choice of sunscreen 30 minutes before you head outside, and re-apply every 80 minutes to two hours. Remember, you need a full shot-glass worth to cover your body!
Sunglasses Aren’t Just a Fashion Statement
Look for a pair that offer 100% UV protection, and know that the color of the lens does not tell you how much protection your shades offer. Darker doesn’t mean better!
UPF Clothing is Always a Good Idea
UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) rated clothing adds another layer of protection between you and the sun’s harmful rays — so find a hat or swim shirt this summer.

increase with every UV ray that hits your skin. They often appear on the hands, arms, chest, face and shoulders, though they can appear anywhere on the body if it has been exposed to UV rays. But how do you know if a spot on your skin is simply a sun spot or something more serious, like skin cancer? First, if a spot is new, you should run it by a dermatologist, as they have specialized training in skin conditions. If you are over age 50, it’s a good idea to have a full-body check with a dermatologist or primary care physician to get a baseline for what your moles, freckles and spots look like. Plus, some areas are hard to examine on your own, like your back. If you are under 50 but have had a lot of sun exposure, are fair-skinned or have a family history of skin cancer, it’s a good idea to get a fullbody check. Another strategy for keeping track of changes in your sun spots, moles or freckles is to take a picture — a phone camera works fine — every six months to a year so that any changes will be more apparent. (Sometimes, you don’t notice a chance that happens gradually, but a picture will tell a clear story.) If you’re determined that your sun spot is not cancerous, but you don’t like the way it looks, you have options. Some over-the-counter creams can gradually fade dark spots. A low strength of hydroquinone, which is a bleaching cream, is available over-the-counter at many drugstores. You can also look for creams that contain retinoids, which can also help spots fade. A doctor can provide stronger topical creams that may be more effective, and new laser technologies that are available through dermatologists can treat sun spots, causing them to disappear completely. However, they can reappear unless sunscreen is used religiously and you avoid too much sun exposure in the peak hours of the day when the sun’s rays are strongest.
How to Choose the Best Sunscreen for You Protecting your skin outdoors starts with sunscreen. While older formulas left a tell-tale white film that was messy and difficult to rub in, the newest sunscreens are easy to apply and can virtually www.OurHealthlbss.com

disappear into the skin. Look for the words “broad spectrum” on your bottle or spray, as this means that it will protect against both UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin and are responsible for wrinkles and aging; UVB rays cause sunburn and play a big role in the development of skin cancer — so protection from both is important.
2
BE GENEROUS Use at least 1 ounce (about a palm-full) to cover your arms, legs, neck and face.
3
BROAD SPECTRUM When buying sunscreen, look for the words “broad spectrum” on the bottle. This means it will protect against UVA and UVB rays.
4
SPF 30 MINIMUM Make sure to use at least SPF 30, which blocks 97% of UV rays.
5
WATER-RESISTANT If you are swimming or playing sports make sure your sunscreen is water-resistant.
6
DON'T FORGET Make sure not to miss the ears, hands, feet and underarms.
7
SUNSCREEN EXPIRES! Did you know that sunscreen can expire? Make sure to check your sunscreen's expiration date before use.
If you are swimming or playing sports, look for a formula that is waterresistant so it will stay with you through your tennis game or splash in the pool. If you have sensitive or acne-prone skin, scan the sunscreen aisle for a formula made specifically for babies or sensitive skin for less chance of irritation. People of all ages, from babies 6 months old and up, need sunscreen protection when outdoors. (Younger babies should always be covered.) Sunscreen is a weapon, but to protect you well, it has to be used wisely. Ideally, apply it 30 minutes before sun exposure, using a full shot-glass worth of the product. Dermatologists advise you to use more than you think you need. Reapply at least every two hours or every 80 minutes if you are swimming or sweating. There are now sprays that can be applied to wet skin, so if you can only grab your kid on his way to the diving board for a quick spray, it can still be effective. In addition to sunscreen, many bathing suits, swim coverups and fabric hats now come with sun protection builtin. Instead of an SPF rating, clothing has a UPF rating — giving you an idea of how effective it is at blocking harmful rays. UPF ratings range from 15 (good) to 50+ (excellent). In addition to sunscreen and UPF clothing, sunglasses are an easy way to protect your eyes and the skin around them from exposure. Look for shades that offer 100% UV protection — and know that darker lenses don’t offer better protection. Dark-tinted glasses without UV protection are more dangerous, as they dilate your pupils more than a lighter lens color, leaving them more exposed to damaging light.
When Avoiding the Sun is Your Best Move Some medications can make you photosensitive — a fancy word for more sensitive than usual to the sun. There are many medications that (Continued on page 32...)

can do this, including many nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, many antibiotics and some diuretics. Most drugs will have a warning on the label. Additionally, you can ask any pharmacist, and they’ll be able to advise you if a medication you are currently taking will cause sun sensitivity. Photosensitivity can result in an inflammation of the skin created by the combination of sun exposure and the medication. This can look similar to a sunburn, rash or eczema. Some topical creams like retinoids and hydroquinone also cause sun sensitivity. If you are taking any of these medications, you should heed the warning to avoid the sun, or you may wind up with painful, blistered or red skin. The outdoors were meant to be enjoyed — and if you wear your sunscreen, don a hat and sunglasses, seek shade breaks and avoid the sun if taking photosensitive medications, you won’t be sidelined by sunburn.

Plastic Surgery and Aesthetic Skin Care words | CHRISTY RIPPEL
OurHealth Lynchburg & Southside magazine’s occasional series on cosmetic surgery and aesthetic skin care services explores new and existing options offered by medical experts in our communities. Throughout the U.S., cosmetic surgery procedures and aesthetic skin services have changed a lot through the years, especially with the increase in popularity of new options and improvements to how existing ones are performed. This trend has carried to Lynchburg and its surrounding communities, where some of the nation’s top-rated board certified cosmetic surgeons offer the latest options available performed with your utmost safety, comfort and expectations in mind. In the first article of our occasional series, we spoke with Keith Pitzer, MD, a board certified plastic surgeon with Centra Medical Group Plastic Surgery Center in Lynchburg about popular non-surgical, minimally-invasive and invasive procedures locally available.

SCULPSURE: A NON-SURGICAL WAY TO GET RID OF STUBBORN FAT SculpSure is the first FDA-cleared laser treatment for lipolysis (getting rid of fat) of the flanks (side of the body) and abdomen. A newer and completely non-invasive treatment, SculpSure has been available to patients since 2015. The plastic surgeons at Centra Medical Group in Lynchburg say SculpSure is ideal for patients who are looking for an alternative to traditional liposuction surgery and want to get rid of stubborn fat and trouble spots, particularly those spots that seem resistant to diet and exercise. “There is no preparation for treatment and it does not require anesthetic,” notes Keith Pitzer, MD of Centra Medical Group Plastic Surgery Center. SculpSure is a laser that specifically focuses on the fat layer without causing burning or redness to the overlying skin, so there is minimal discomfort. Treatment for each area of the body takes approximately 25 minutes, and there is no downtime following the procedure. In one treatment, SculpSure can provide up to a 24 percent reduction in subcutaneous fat, which is the fat that lies just below your skin—like the excess fat you can grab at your waistline. While the procedure is quick, patients see results at approximately six weeks following treatment. While the fat cells are destroyed during the laser treatment, it takes some time for the body to evacuate them via urine. “Optimal results are typically seen at twelve weeks,” says Dr. Pitzer. “Treated fat cells are permanently eliminated and will not regenerate.” However, it is important to note that results are not permanent if a patient gains significant weight.
In one treatment, SculpSure can provide up to a 24 percent reduction in subcutaneous fat, which is the fat that lies just below your skin – like the excess fat you can grab at your waistline. Cost varies depending on the number of areas treated, but ranges from approximately $1,200 and up. Like most cosmetic procedures, SculpSure is not covered by insurance.

Centra plastic surgeons like SculpSure because there is no surgery, no downtime and the patient can resume normal activities right away. “There are many people who exercise and eat right, but still have those stubborn areas that just won’t go away,” concludes Dr. Pitzer. “SculpSure brings another option to the table.”
SMARTLIPO OFFERS A MINIMALLY INVASIVE ALTERNATIVE TO TRADITIONAL LIPOSUCTION SmartLipo is an FDA-approved, minimally invasive alternative to traditional liposuction used for removing excess body fat. Simply put, SmartLipo is liposuction performed using laser technology, allowing the plastic surgeon to remove unwanted fat with less pain and downtime than traditional liposuction surgery. “Since the procedure is minimally invasive, the bounce back is much quicker,” says Dr. Pitzer.
The ideal candidate for SmartLipo is someone in good health, and not typically more than 25 pounds over their ideal body weight.

BREAST AUGMENTATION BREAST AUGMENTATION: A cosmetic surgery procedure to increase breast size and enhance breast shape, typically through the placement of silicone or saline breast implants. About $5000 to $6000
Similar to SculpSure, this procedure was designed for stubborn fat deposits that seem resistant to diet and exercise. If you choose SmartLipo, you can expect to be awake during the procedure, but Dr. Pitzer notes that sometimes local or oral sedation is used. Very small incisions are made, which takes just one suture or stitch each to close. During the procedure, laser energy is delivered underneath the skin, which melts fat and also tightens skin to achieve the desired shape. The melted fat is removed during SmartLipo with gentle suction. “For most people, results are achieved in just one treatment,” says Dr. Pitzer. “Results can be seen within a week, with continued improvement over three to six months.” Patients can resume normal activities after about three weeks. Dr. Pitzer likes the effectiveness of the procedure, ease of recovery and the additional benefit of skin tightening along with the destruction of fat. Available since 2009, SmartLipo is not covered by insurance and the approximate cost is between $3,500 and $4,700, depending on areas treated.
BREAST AUGMENTATION TO ENHANCE FULLNESS AND SHAPE Breast augmentation is a surgery that uses an implant to enhance the fullness and shape of the breast. Common reasons for the procedure are to improve the size or shape of the breast or restore volume after weight loss or pregnancy. Depending on a patient’s goals, “sometimes, a breast 40

During a breast augmentation consultation, expect to discuss the size and shape you hope to achieve, which can be accomplished by placing the implant over or under the muscle, depending on how much breast tissue is present to help mask the implant, says Dr. Pitzer. The physician will make a recommendation on placement and type of implant based on a physical exam, medical history and desired results.
During a breast augmentation consultation, expect to discuss the size and shape you hope to achieve, which can be accomplished by placing the implant over or under the muscle, depending on how much breast tissue is present to help mask the implant. Breast augmentation surgery typically lasts up to two hours, and is performed under general anesthesia (going to sleep). Patients can expect to wear a support bra afterwards, and no drain will be present, says Dr. Pitzer. “There are several days of reduced activity and then no heavy lifting or strenuous activity for three to six weeks,” says Dr. Pitzer. Expect a follow-up appointment with your plastic surgeon one week after surgery.

lift, instead of or in addition to breast implants is common,” says Dr. Pitzer. The best course of action can be determined in a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon.
FACIAL INJECTIONS FACIAL INJECTIONS: A minimally-invasive cosmetic procedure to reduce wrinkles and enhance appearance of face by injecting the skin with facial fillers. Two types of facial injections include BOTOX and Juvederm.
BOTOX: A facial injection that temporarily reduces muscle activity for significantly visible smoothing. About $240 to $625
JUVEDERM: A facial injection of hyaluronic acid fillers used to diminish facial line and restore volume and fullness in the face. About $375 to $575
“Many people believe that implants must be replaced every 10 years,” says Dr. Pitzer. “However, there’s no real set time these days. As long as the implant is still intact and there have been no changes, there is no need to replace them.” Cost for implants from a Centra board-certified plastic surgeon ranges from approximately $5,000 to $6,000.
FACIAL INJECTIONS: BOTOX AND FILLERS THAT IMPROVE APPEARANCE WITHOUT SIGNIFICANT DOWNTIME Facial injections are a minimally-invasive way to improve appearance without significant downtime. “As we age, our faces naturally lose subcutaneous fat,” says Dr. Pitzer. The facial muscles are then working closer to the skin surface, so smile lines and crow’s feet (creases at the corners of the eyes) become more apparent.” Injections of BOTOX block muscular nerve signals, which then weaken the muscle so it can’t contract. The end result is diminished facial wrinkling. The injection temporarily reduces muscle activity for significantly visible smoothing. www.OurHealthlbss.com

The other category of injections is fillers, such as Juvederm. These hyaluronic acid fillers also diminish facial line and restore volume and fullness in the face.
Fillers are often used to lift cheeks, smooth parentheses lines (around the mouth) or plump and smooth the lips. “Over time, the cheeks flatten, and the skin may begin to sag,” explains Dr. Pitzer. “This is caused by a natural loss of volume in the cheek area, or what the experts call age-related midface volume loss. Additionally, lips can thin over time and vertical lip lines become more noticeable.” Following injections, Dr. Pitzer recommends not doing any activity that elevates the blood pressure to help limit bruising. Patients can resume all normal activities the following day. Results with Botox can last between four and six months and it costs between $240 and $625. Juvederm results last between eight and 16 months, and approximate cost is $375 to $575, says Dr. Pitzer.

STRAIGHT TALK ON
WRINKLES
STEPS TO
SMOOTH
AT ANY AGE words | CHRISTY RIPPEL
If you think your laugh lines aren’t so funny, you’re not alone. Many men and women venture to the drug store or department store counters looking for a wrinkle fix to regain a more youthful appearance. But what they often find is confusing ingredients, big promises, and even bigger price tags for creams, lotions and potions. But what really works? You may be surprised to know that you can prevent wrinkles with some easy (and cheap!) lifestyle changes. And when wrinkles do appear—which they will, eventually, for everyone—there are many effective options. We spoke with the dermatologists at RidgeView Dermatology in Lynchburg to get the latest information on how to prevent and smooth wrinkles,

and be happy with the face smiling back at you in the mirror.
USE SUNSCREEN DAILY “The importance of sunscreen cannot be overstated,” says Carrie Cobb, MD, dermatologist at RidgeView Dermatology. “Used regularly, it is the best way to stave-off early signs of aging in the skin.” But what kind of sunscreen, and how much? Dermatologists say to wear an SPF 30 or above every day, rain or shine. Many newer formulas disappear into the skin, and can go underneath make-up. On a sunny beach or pool day, use a full shot-glass worth to cover your body, and re-apply that same amount every two hours. Leave a tube of sunscreen in your purse or glove box, and make sure to put it on before you drive—the sun sneaks through your car windows, too. Slather some on your hands while you’re at it— they are one of the first spots on your body to show signs of aging.

CUT BACK ON SUGAR IN YOUR DIET There are two proteins in the skin that give it youthful fullness and elasticity (the skin’s ability to stretch and bounce back, like a rubber band). Those proteins are elastin and collagen. According to Kristen Kuk, MD, with RidgeView Dermatology, “a diet rich in sugar can hasten the breakdown of elastin and collagen” that results in dullness and wrinkles. Read food labels before you buy— besides obvious sources of sugar like cookies and cakes, sugar is in many foods that you would never suspect, like salad dressing and spaghetti sauce. The American Heart Association says to keep added sugar consumption under six teaspoons or 25 grams for women and 38 grams or nine teaspoons for men. Don’t worry about naturally occurring sugars in fruit or dairy. While you’re working on cutting back on sugar, add in some foods rich in vitamins C and/or E like oranges and leafy greens, which Dr. Kuk notes can be good for skin.
3
STOP SMOKING Your doctor may have advised you to quit smoking for other health reasons, but did you know smoking can also give you wrinkles? Cigarette smoke contains a number of toxic ingredients like carbon monoxide, which displaces the oxygen in your skin. Nicotine in cigarette smoke reduces blood flow to your tissues, leaving skin dry and discolored. Cigarette smoking also depletes important nutrients like vitamin C, which helps repair skin damage. And the way you purse your lips when you www.OurHealthlbss.com

inhale on a cigarette? That repeated motion leaves wrinkles around the mouth. In short, cigarettes are so toxic that they accelerate the aging process, and smokers have the wrinkles to prove it.

DON’T GO TO BED WITHOUT WASHING YOUR FACE
MEGAN ALLISON, PA-C An NCCPA Certified Physician Assistant with RidgeView Dermatology.
It might not seem like a big deal to hit the pillow without washing your face, but it is essential for preventing premature aging. Sunscreen, makeup and other grime on your skin from the day’s activities can clog pores. You might wind up with acne, dry skin and deepening of wrinkles. Plus, skin repairs itself at night, so if you skip washing your face, you lose out on the chance to add a moisturizer or other beneficial ingredients after cleansing. For nights when you fall into bed, leave a package of cleansing wipes on the nightstand. If nothing else, a quick swipe will free your skin of the day’s grit. Ideally, cleanse morning and night with a mild cleanser (dermatologists like Cetaphil), and follow it with a serum or lotion with wrinkle-fighting ingredients.
5
KNOW WHAT INGREDIENTS TO LOOK FOR IN LOTIONS, CREAMS AND SERUMS
CARRIE COBB, MD, FAAD A board-certified dermatologist at RidgeView Dermatology.
There are countless wrinkle creams and potions on the market, and it’s hard to know which ones work best—but there are many drugstore options that dermatologists say do work. Dr. Cobb says to look for retinoid products, like Differin gel—which was once prescription only. This and other retinoids can decrease fine lines and wrinkles by stimulating the production of new skin cells— and they fade dark spots, too. Retinoids can be layered under a moisturizer, or some moisturizers already contain retinoids. Many dermatologists advise patients to use a vitamin C containing product in the morning followed by sunscreen, and a retinoid and moisturizer at night.

When is the right time to talk to a dermatologist about wrinkles? “After good preventative habits are established, I encourage patients to reflect on what bothers them about their skin and seek treatments to specifically address those concerns,” says Dr. Cobb. Dermatologists have more tools than ever to combat wrinkles without surgery, and most fall into two main categories: injections and laser treatments. There are medications like BOTOX that, says Megan Allison, PA-C, with RidgeView Dermatology, “target and soften muscle movements that lead to creasing of the skin over time.” Allison says that BOTOX is most often used for frown lines (from knitting your eyebrows together), forehead lines and crow’s feet (also known as laugh lines—the small wrinkles on the outer corners of your eyes). Dermal fillers are the other major type of injection—brand names you may have heard include Juvederm. “Another natural part of the aging process is that as our

faces tend to lose fat…creases and grooves become more prominent,” says Allison. Dermal fillers can be used in these spaces to fill them out. While BOTOX and fillers have been around for more than 10 years, Allison says they are now longer lasting, softer and more versatile than ever before. Know that BOTOX typically requires treatment every three months to maintain results; dermal fillers need repeating every six to 12 months. Lasers, like the CO2 laser used at RidgeView Dermatology, are another tool. Allison says it is best for overall crepe paper-like skin and fine lines, and can be effective at smoothing and tightening the skin. Chemical peels and microneedling treatments are other possible options for reducing fine lines and wrinkles, and are usually done in a once-monthly series initially and then maintenance two to three times a year. “We have an ever-widening array of options to treat wrinkles and the best approach is a very individualized one,” says Dr. Kuk. TREATMENT
A Lynchburg dermatologist is using high-intensity light treatment to correct many skin problems with little downtime words | CHRISTY RIPPEL
In the past 20 years, many new technologies have allowed doctors to dramatically improve the vitality of patients’ skin without invasive procedures. One such technology is IPL or Intense Pulse Light treatment. “IPL treats sun damage, rosacea, excessive hair growth and abnormal pigment in the skin,” says Soni Carlton, MD of Dermatology Consultants in Lynchburg. Dr. Carlton gives her expert advice and opinion below, answering everything you need to know to decide if IPL is right for you.
How does IPL work? “IPL is a type of photorejuvenation treatment using high-intensity light similar to a laser. The light energy is converted to heat energy, which does the work and damages the target, like a dark spot on the skin that we want to disappear. A numbing cream is applied to the skin, and the patient lies back in a chair. The technician has a hand piece that they hold onto the skin. The treatment itself is

Dr. Carlton also notes that for people with severe skin damage, acne or precancerous sun spots, IPL may be combined with a topical medication called Levulan in a procedure called Levulan Photodynamic Therapy (PDT), which may help make skin more healthy, smooth and clear, and possibly even prevent skin cancer.

“IPL is great for spider veins on the face, and rosacea (redness). We use it a lot for general photorejuvenation, to even out the skin’s tone and texture. How many treatments will I need? “It depends on what you are treating. For sun damage, rosacea or freckles, you’ll need two to three treatments. For hair removal, you’ll need six to eight treatments over a period of a year or so.”
How much will it cost? “Cost also depends on the area we are treating, but a general estimate is approximately $300 for one entire facial treatment. Hair removal can be less, approximately $125 for a treatment on an area like the upper lip or chin. It is a cosmetic procedure, so it isn’t covered by insurance. Depending on a patient’s budget, there are other less expensive options to treat issues, like prescription creams. WEAR A LIFE JACKET Inexperienced or non-swimmers should wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket, or a personal flotation device (PFD). For more information about United States Coast Guard-approved PFDs, including choosing the right types to select based on the water environment, how to select the correct size, how to properly wear and care recommendations, scan the QR code provided.

LEAD BY EXAMPLE
Be the role model of water safety for your children. Wear your own PFD while on any type of motorized or non-motorized watercraft. Also, do not engage in alcohol or drug use while operating any type of water craft or while swimming.

DON’T JUMP IN TO SAVE A FRIEND
STRUGGLING IN DEEP WATER If children find their friend in deep water unexpectedly, the natural reaction may be to jump in the water to try to save him or her. Even if a child is a great swimmer, a panicked person will overpower them, pulling them underwater with them. YMCA’s Safety Around Water program teaches the “reach, throw, don’t go” concept of using a long object to reach for them and pull them to safety. By using this technique, children can help their friend without compromising their own safety.

ENROLL YOUR CHILDREN IN
WATER SAFETY OR SWIM LESSONS
Just like teaching your children to look both ways before they cross the street, having them participate in formal water safety lessons teaches them an important life skill that may one day save their life.
