I know the holiday has past, but it wasn’t all that many days ago.....How did you celebrate Memorial Day? Many of us celebrate the three day weekend as the unofficial start of summer with picnics, parties and family gatherings. These are all great but do we also attend parades or other ceremonies that honor the many men and women who lost their lives while in service to our country. Originally called Decoration Day, Memorial Day became a federal holiday in 1971. This is the day set aside to honor the brave men and women who died in service to our country. In the small town where I grew up we had a parade every year to honor those brave men and women. The parade went right down the middle of Main Street with local businesses on both sides of the street decked out in “Red, White and Blue”. There were floats, the high school marching band and at the end of the parade were all the

kids on bikes decorated with streamers and American Flags. The parade always ended with a ceremony at the cemetery which included a moment of silence to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country. It was a solemn occasion but one that reminded us that freedom should not be taken for granted. It comes at a very large price. A great reminder why we observe Memorial Day is a visit to the Saratoga National Cemetery. It’s a beautiful, serene, quiet and very large final resting place for thousands of those dedicated men and women who served our country. By the time you leave the cemetery you’ll definitely remember why we observe Memorial Day. So wherever you may be next Memorial Day remember to take a moment out of your day to remember those that gave the ultimate sacrifice so that we can enjoy our picnics, parades and family gatherings. Wishing you and your families a happy and safe start to the summer. Kevin Hotaling, Owner and Publisher, Our Towne Colonie

Auto Insurance FAQ’s When should I add my children to my auto policy? The general rule with most insurance companies is when your son or daughter gets their learners permit they should be added to your insurance policy. Insurance companies guidelines differ however, some will allow you to add your child as a non-driver to the insurance policy until they get their license. The reason is the carrier would prefer an updated list of regular and soon to be drivers for the vehicles they insure. The carrier knows they will get additional premium when the driver becomes licensed. Should young drivers get their own policy? When your son or daughter becomes licensed you have a tough decision to make. Should you add them to your policy or should they get their own policy? Due to the high cost of auto insurance a young driver can get more coverage for far less money by staying on the parents policy. The problem is if there is an accident the rates will go up at renewal for all vehicles insured on the policy. In the event of a major claim or multiple claims the policy could be canceled all together. What’s the best solution? Call your agent and ask what the carriers’ policy is in reference to adding your child to your policy when they get their permit; and when they become licensed. We have a carrier who allows young drivers to be spun off the parent’s policy onto their own policy. The benefit is they share the parents rating structure and pricing but have their own policy. In the event of an accident or claim it would not affect the parents policy. Do I need more insurance with a young driver? You might consider adding a $1,000,000 umbrella policy, which will provide additional liability protection for your home and auto policies. Correctly structured it could cover multiple auto policies at one residence. Umbrella policies are a cost effective way of adding extra protection. Who do I call with questions about auto insurance? Feel free to call the professionals at The Lyden Group Insurance Agency we are always happy to help. Call 877-7018 or e-mail steve@lydengroup.com

Diabetes, Cholesterol, and Blood Pressure—Oh My! The last couple of decades tell a “good news, bad news” story about diabetes. That’s the disease that makes it tough for your body to control blood sugar. Here’s a snapshot: In the last 20 years, the number of adults with diabetes has more than tripled. Nearly one in 10 now has the disease. That’s certainly not good news. But there are some bright spots in recent reports. In general, control of blood sugar has improved and rates of serious complications from diabetes have declined a great deal. If you’re at risk for diabetes or already have it, consider these three questions: 1. Are you making good lifestyle choices? Where people haven’t made progress, lifestyle has a lot to do with it. For example, it’s no secret that the obesity epidemic is growing, right along with the diabetes epidemic. Think about the lifestyle choices you make. Yes, you’ve heard it all before, but it still holds true: Make healthy food choices—and understand diabetes meal planning. Exercise 30 to 60 minutes most days of the week. Move to or stay at a healthy weight. And manage your stress as well as you can. 2. Do you know your diabetes ABCs? Knowing your numbers is also a big piece of the diabetes story, especially if you are at risk for or have high blood pressure or high cholesterol. High blood pressure is when blood moves through your vessels with too much force. Cholesterol is a fat-like substance that can cause plaque buildup in arteries. Combined, these three give your heart and blood vessels a triple whammy. These are the diabetes ABCs: • A is for the A1C test. That’s the test that shows what your blood sugar levels have been the past three months. In most cases, you want to shoot for a number below 7. • B is for blood pressure. A great goal is below 140/80. The top number measures pressure in vessels as your heart beats. The bottom number measures pressure when vessels relax between beats. • C is for cholesterol. Ask your doctor or me the numbers you need. 3. Are you managing your medicines? If you have type 1 diabetes, you must use insulin. Some people with type 2 diabetes utilize pills and/or insulin to meet target blood glucose levels. Although lifestyle is a first line of defense, cholesterol medications such as statins can help control cholesterol levels. As for high blood pressure, there are many classes of drugs to keep this silent killer at bay. It may not be easy keeping track of all this, especially if you’re taking multiple medications. That’s what your pharmacist at Marra’s Pharmacy is here for. We can explain how each drug works, what side effects to watch for, and how to make sure you’re taking them all properly. Just as importantly we can assist you on coordinating the best regimen to take your medication and often times provide you the most cost effective manner to acquire your medications, taking some stress of your wallet or pocket book. So, what’s your diabetes story? Together, let’s make sure it has a happier ending. P.S. – Also count on Marra’s Pharmacy for help with your Diabetes Testing Supplies!

How to Get Rid of Ants, Wasps, Spiders and other Insects Spring Survival Tips Spring has finally sprung, our customers are gearing up for a season of outdoor fun. Whether you’re barbequing or simply relaxing on your patio, nothing crashes a party like an onslaught of insects. However, following these tips, you can get rid of ants, spiders and other pests safely and easily, indoors and out. Arm Yourself Against Ants

“There are two basic ways to deal with ants,” says Stew Clark, Director of Research at TERRO®, an industry leader in DIY pest control products. “The first and often only step needed to control ants is to bait the ants with liquid ant baits. Indoors, lace liquid ant bait close to areas where ants have been observed. The liquid baits are made with a natural, sweet tasting liquid that attracts ants quickly. While the active ingredient in the bait will ultimately kill the worker ant by interfering with the ant’s digestive system, it works slowly enough that the worker has time to get back and unsuspectingly share the lethal bait with the rest of the colony.

Wherever insects are noticed, stand a safe distance from the nest and use a foaming wasp & hornet killer spray until the surface is moist. As the foam expands, it will completely cover the nest. The insects will fall to the ground and die. Try to spray early in the morning or late at night when they are less active and are in the nest. To prevent wasps from entering your home you should spray around areas where they can enter, including gaps around outdoor plumbing and vents, cracks or crevices in foundations and along sills and ledges. Conquer Creepy Crawlers

Spotting a spider sends many people running. However, these creepy crawlers can easily be eliminated with contact killers, like an aerosol and ready-to-use spray.

Spiders are often found in woodpiles, heaps of dead leaves or anywhere debris builds up. Moist areas such as basements and garages are also prime areas that these pests gravitate towards. Removing debris around and in your home and keeping damp areas as dry as possible will lessen the possibility these pests entering a home. “Even the best efforts to keep spiders at bay often fail,” says Clark. “The best line Since most indoor infestations are linked to a colony of defense is to have a contact killer on hand and to located underground outside the house, you should periodically treat the area by spraying in cracks and also bait ants outside with an outdoor liquid ant crevices.” bait. When searching for ants outside, look for “ant highways” or foraging trails. These trails are simply Phillips Hardware carries all the Terro products you a line of marching ants that leads from their home will need this summer to stay pest free. TERRO® is to yours. Often, these trails are most active during the industry leader in ant control and has been a the morning or evening. Place insect bait near ant trusted brand in pest control products for more than trails or where ants are numerous. After baiting, if 90 years. Based in Lititz, PA , the company offers the ants are still coming, you might need to move to proven ant and pest control products including a contact killer to help eliminate the ants. Look for liquid ant baits, aerosol sprays, perimeter granules sprays, dusts or granules that kill ants instantly and and ant dust products. deliver long-lasting residual repellency. Wipe out Wasps & Hornets

Wasps and hornets begin to emerge from hibernation in the springtime. Their painful stings are dreaded by many, but there are easy and effective ways to kill these unwanted pests. Aerodynamically, the bumble bee shouldn’t be able to fly, but the bumble bee doesn’t know it so it goes on flying anyway. Mary Kay Ash

Start Saving Today for Tomorrow’s College Bills Another school year is drawing to a close. If you have young children, you might be planning for their summer activities. But you also might want to look even farther into the future — to the day when your kids say “goodbye” to their local schools and “hello” to their college dormitories. When that day arrives, will you be financially prepared to pay for the high costs of

higher education? Consider this: For the 2013–2014 academic year, the average cost (tuition, fees, room and board) was $18,391 for an in-state student at a four-year public college or university, and $40,917 for a private school, according to the College Board. And these costs may well be considerably higher by the time your children enter college. Of course, these are just the “sticker” prices; some families pay less, thanks to grants and tax benefits, such as the American Opportunity Tax Credit and the Lifetime Learning Tax Credit. Still, you may encounter some hefty college bills down the road. But college is still a good investment in your child’s future. Over an adult’s working life, an individual with a bachelor’s degree can expect to earn, on average, nearly $1 million more than someone with only a high school diploma, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. So you’re saving for a good cause. Unfortunately, you may not be saving enough — or you might not be making the most of your savings. To save for college, more parents use a general savings account than any other method, according to Sallie Mae’s How America Saves for College 2014 study. These types of accounts carry two significant drawbacks: They typically earn tiny returns and they offer no tax advantages. However, you do you have some attractive college-funding vehicles available, one of which is a 529 plan. Your 529 plan earnings accumulate tax free, provided they are used for qualified higher education expenses. (529 plan distributions not used for qualified expenses may be subject to federal and state income tax and a 10% IRS penalty.) Furthermore, your 529 plan contributions may be deductible from your state taxes. But 529 plans vary, so be sure to check with your tax advisor regarding deductibility. A 529 plan offers other benefits, too. For one thing, the lifetime contribution limits for 529 plans are quite generous; while these limits vary by state, some plans allow contributions well in excess of $200,000. And a 529 plan is flexible: If your child decides against college or vocational school, you can transfer the unused funds to another family member, tax and penalty free. While a 529 plan is a popular choice for college savings, it is not the only option available. You also might want to consider a Coverdell Education Savings Account, which, like a 529 plan, can generate tax-free earnings if the money is used for higher education expenses. You can typically only put in a maximum of $2,000 per year to a Coverdell account, but it does offer more flexibility in investment choices than a 529 plan. Your children may be young today, but, before you know it, they’ll be packing their bags for college. So, no matter which college savings vehicles you choose, put them to work soon. The Spindle City Historic Society In the summer of 1994, a group of people began meeting in Cohoes to avert the planned demolition of the Silliman Memorial Church. They adopted the name Friends of Historic Cohoes. In the first few years, their efforts were concentrated on raising awareness of Cohoes history and the importance of historic preservation in the community, and in advocating alternatives to demolition of the Silliman church. In the spring of 1996, the organization held its first Annual Meeting, an event featuring guest speakers. The organization adopted a new name, the Spindle City Historic Society, in June of 1996, and received official status as a nonprofit organization from the State Education Department in June of 1997. In the fall of 1998, the Society published the first issue of its newsletter, which has appeared quarterly ever since. In that year, the Society offered its first guided tour, visiting Harmony Mill #3 and the surrounding historic district; since then, the society has offered numerous tours of historic sites in Cohoes. In the winter of 1999, the first SCHS webpage was launched, and the society continues its presence on the web, now at www.spindlecity.net. In January of 2014, SCHS created a Facebook page. In 1999, as part of the Cohoes Beautification Project, SCHS decided to “adopt” Lock 15 of the enlarged Erie Canal as its site for cleanup. SCHS has continued to work on the Erie Canal in cleanup, preservation, and education efforts. In 2003, SCHS began a partnership with 4th grade students in

Rockville Centre, New York, in a fundraising effort to preserve canal sites in Cohoes, which culminated in the installation of an interpretive sign explaining the workings of canal locks. SCHS spearheaded efforts to create a park at the site of the Silliman Memorial Church, and organized the dedication of the park in 2004, which included the installation of an interpretive sign describing the life and legacy of industrialist and philanthropist Horace B. Silliman. SCHS members created other interpretive signs around the city, including signs in Power Canal Park, Craner Park, and along the Canal Heritage Trail. The Society’s most recent interpretive sign project honors Hall of Fame baseball player George Stacey Davis. Fall 2001 marked many important and exciting changes for SCHS. After years without a home, the group took up residence in the Cohoes Visitors Center. The SCHS produced its first book, a pictorial history of Cohoes published by Arcadia Press. The SCHS published a second book, Cohoes Revisited , in 2006. The Society’s latest book, a postcard history of Cohoes, was published in March 2014. All three books are for sale through the SCHS by contacting 518-237-5618 or info@spindlecity.net. WHAT’S IN YOUR CLOSET MUSINGS ON THE FATE OF BOOKS Contrary to some popular opinion the book is not a thing of the past. Speculation has been rampant for years as tech companies fine tune e-book readers and audio book delivery is expanded. Independent bookstores were supposed to have gone the way of the bison, slowly disappearing as civilization advanced in the form of mega-stores. But at this juncture it seems we have reached a level of peaceful co-existence. Some people opt for digital consumption, some people prefer the printed word and many use both. Humorously, in my day-to-day contact with folks downsizing or dismantling estates I regularly hear: “I just can’t throw out books”. Consequently I get offered books that have spent years acquiring a fuzzy white jacket of mold in a damp basement or books that have been toddler-handled, insect consumed or altered for school projects. There is still the mystique of the book. It is still treasured. There are still many of us who refuse to relinquish the excitement of holding a newly printed book with its fresh smell and feel and listening to the faint crack as we open the front board for the first time and read the synopsis and author bio on the dust jacket flaps. And there are equally as many who relish the presence of a wellread book, who delight in the craftsmanship of a volume with leather spines and corners, gilded edges and tipped-in color illustrations. No, the book will survive as long as there are plenty of us in love with books to make it happen. Visit Dennis Holzman Antiques, we carry nearly 10,000 rare and out of print books and are always buying, especially books signed by important authors, fine bindings, scholarly works and limited editions.

Why Use A Buyers Agent? By Bob Eberle If the IRS told you that you owed $150,000, would you deal with that problem without the help of a professional accountant? If you were engrossed in a legal matter over $100,000 would you try to resolve it without the help of an attorney? Real estate transactions are one of the biggest financial investments most people experience in their lifetime. It would be crazy to make a purchase like that without a professional by your side – especially a professional who knows the Capital Region like no other. But if you’re still not convinced of the value of a real estate agent, here are some more reasons to use one. If you are buying a home, The Eberle Real Estate Experts: Can help you determine your buying power – that is, your financial reserves plus your borrowing capacity. Not only do we work with the top vendors, but we will be able to assess which one of those lenders is most qualified to help you and your current situation. We know that your purchase is not the same as our last buyer or the next one. Have many resources to assist you in your home search Sometimes the property you are seeking is available but not actively advertised in the market, and it will take some investigation by your agent to find all available properties. We are also always in open dialogue with other agents. Not to mention our mobile app and top Capital Area Homes for Sale search site, www.albanyhomes411.com . Can assist you in the selection process by providing objective information about each property Real estate agents have access to a variety of resources. We can provide local community information on utilities, zoning, schools, etc. There are two things you’ll want to know that we can tell you – Will the property I’m looking at

provide the environment I want for a home or investment? Second – will the property have resale value when I am ready to sell and move on? Can help you negotiate Contingencies. Concessions. There are myriad negotiating factors, including but not limited to price, financing, terms, date of possession and often the inclusion or exclusion of repairs and furnishings or equipment. The purchase contract should provide a period of time for you to complete appropriate inspections and investigations of the property before you are bound to complete the purchase. Your agent can advise you as to which investigations and inspections are recommended or required. We can also help you best negotiate any issues found at the property. Provides due diligence during the evaluation of the property Depending on the area and property, this could include inspections for termites, dry rot, asbestos, faulty structure, roof condition, septic tank and well tests, just to name a few. The Eberle Real Estate Experts can assist you in finding qualified professionals to do these investigations. We only work with vendors whom we would trust with our own home. Can help close the purchase of your new home Between the initial purchase agreement and closing, questions or issues may arise. Don’t you want a professional on your side, objectively helping you to resolve these issues and get to the closing?

FEATURED BUSINESS www.TedsFishFry.net Ted’s Fish Fry is a family owned and operated business that has been a Capital Region tradition for over 60 years! Started by Ted Deeb, and now run by his son SK Deeb, Ted’s is an American Dream success story. Back in the 1930’s, Ted Deeb, the son of Lebanese immigrants was a young boy, living in Troy, NY. At just 10 years old, Ted was diagnosed with a serious heart ailment, and was therefore taken out of school. In an interview back in 1978, Ted stated, “I knew that I didn’t have enough formal education to get me too far, so I decided I would have to start a business of my own. What I lacked in formal education I had to make up for in practical knowledge”. Recalling his first business experience, Ted stated, “I was 12 years old and my father ran a dry goods store. I needed some money so I asked him if I could sell some notions door to door. I took a little black suitcase filled with knickknacks and was on my way”. Ted continued selling different products from door to door until he was 20 years old. At this time, he took a $300 loan from his sister, and bought an open-air fruit market. Ted described this business venture as his “biggest gamble”. That gamble turned out to be a success. After running the fruit stand for a couple of years, Ted purchased a building and converted it into a snack bar called “Pots and Lots”. From there, Ted moved to 447 3rd Ave, in Watervliet and opened the first Ted’s Fish Fry. Ted stated, “It just came to me. I wanted to make money. The idea for a fish fry stand came along and I capitalized on it. That’s how I got my start”.

SK Deeb, Dave Hardy, Sue Fisher, Joe Deeb, Bill Deeb

Ted Deeb

Fast forward to today, and that Watervliet Ted’s Fish Fry is still running, along with 4 other locations in North Troy, Sycaway, Latham and Colonie. Ted passed away on July 21, 1985, and is survived by his Ted’s Fish Fry: 447 3rd Ave, Watervliet Year:1959 wife Ellen Deeb, son, SK Deeb, daughter, Donna Deeb and four grandchildren. Family and tradition are two things that go hand and hand at Ted’s Fish Fry. SK is now the president of the company, and runs all 5 Ted’s Fish Frys with the help of his son, Bill Deeb, cousin, Joe Deeb, and his wonderful managers & employees.

We continue the traditions that Ted started back in the 1940’s, which include the way that we call in each order to the cooks, and the delicious recipes that Ted mastered. Back in 1968, Ted was driving south, down to Florida and stopped to eat at a small snack bar for fried chicken. Ted was so impressed with the flavor of the chicken that he asked to speak with the cook. Ted stated, “I took the recipe home with me and after considerable experimentation; I used the chicken fry batter for my onion rings. It proved to be ‘scrumptious’ and now they are just as popular as my fish frys”. Our homemade meat sauce came from an old greek recipe, and helped put us on the market for hotdogs as well as fish frys. Today, we recently started selling mini hotdogs, loaded with the same home made meat sauce, derived from that Greek recipe.

Ted’s Fish Fry has grown so much in the past 60 years, and we continue to grow as a business and family. Recently, two of Ted’s grandchildren got married. Shaun Deeb and Ashley Deeb had a baby boy in May, and Ted Deeb and Autumn Deeb are expecting a baby girl in June. Our menu at Ted’s Fish Fry is also growing. We have incorporated new items such as mini hotdogs, bacon burgers, fresh salads, homemade soups, and much more! Whether you’re looking to pick up a quick lunch, or you want to spend the evening in our dining room with your family, Ted’s Fish Fry is sure to satisfy your needs! Remember, we are not Fast Food, we are Fresh Food, FAST! 447 3rd Ave 350 2nd Ave 700 Hoosick Road 636A New Loudon Road 203 Wolf Road Watervliet Troy Troy Latham Colonie

The book, says the publisher, is “the untold story of how Hollywood changed World War II, and how World War II changed Hollywood, through the prism of five film directors caught up in the war: John Ford, William Wyler, John Huston, Frank Capra, and George Stevens….between them they were on the scene of almost every major moment of America’s war and in every branch of the service – Army, Navy, Air Force, Atlantic and Pacific; from Midway to North Africa; from Normandy to the fall of Paris and the liberation of the Nazi death camps. In the end, though none of them emerged unscarred, they produced a

body of work that was essential to how Americans perceived the war, and still do.” As part of his review, Lenny will be sharing several of the short documentary films these directors made during the war. The review begins at 12:15 PM; bring your lunch if you are on lunch hour. A Look at Morocco Ahmed Elasser will speak on the history, geography, languages, food, music ,and arts of his native country. The Benefits of Practice In learning anything new in life, we only grow through practice. The beauty of this process is that it adds so much to our way of approaching things in our everyday lives. Learning to take time out of the day to focus on a subject teaches us better ways to organize and pace ourselves. It helps develop habits that are applicable to other aspects of life such as studying for a test or getting through tasks at work. As we work through a problem section, something our brains might not exactly grasp the first time around, we’re helping to build and strengthen pathways in the brain, and can enhance gross and fine motor muscle groups. When it comes to music instruments, practice itself is not enough. Providing a student the chance to bring what they’ve been working diligently on and perform it alongside other musicians presents further levels of learning. The feeling of satisfaction upon mastering what they have been working so hard on and performing it for friends and family is an amazing opportunity! Lastly, learning a musical instrument is a gift you can have for the rest of your life. At the School of Rock we provide the foundation to develop the discipline of practice in fun and unique yet challenging ways. Come on in for a tour and a free trial lesson today!
