It’s 10 p.m. Do You Know Where Your retirement account Is? Just as parents worry about their children, investors worry about their retirement accounts. One way to help reduce your investment worries is by allocating your retirement portfolio in a variety of asset classes. Owning a variety of securities in different asset classes helps minimize the effects one asset class has on a portfolio in the event that one asset class performs poorly. Professionally-designed asset allocation programs can help you find the mix of stock and bond investment options that work together most efficiently to achieve the highest return possible at a risk level you’re comfortable with. And, while a professionally managed process of asset allocation cannot guarantee a profit or protect against a loss in periods of declining values, it is a way for investors to minimize their overall risk while increasing their potential for higher returns. Understanding the role of stock Investment options in a retirement Portfolio

Stock investment options are generally necessary to have the potential to grow capital, which impacts your standard of living now and in retirement. The growth of capital is a source for higher income in retirement and can help make possible a more stable, and potentially rising, standard of living. Inflation is a risk from which you need to protect your financial assets. Over the short-term, rising prices may go unnoticed. But over a decade or two, the impact can be significant. Assuming an average annual inflation rate of 5 percent, the purchasing power of $1 will shrink to about $.38 over a period of 20 years. Though past performance is no guarantee of future results, a diversified portfolio including stock investment options has historically provided an effective method to outpace inflation over time. Though stock investment options may present greater short-term volatility than bonds, over longer time periods, the additional risk of owning stock investment options can become much lower. Time helps increase the likelihood of investment success. Finding the Investment Mix That Works for You Allocating your assets correctly can be critical to the success of your retirement portfolio. To make this determination, you need to closely consider three things: • Analyze your retirement income cash flow. learn which expenses are “needs” and which are “wants.” • Determine your time horizon. Figure out when you will need the money and how long you anticipate needing the money to last. • identify your tolerance for risk. Find the mix of stocks and bonds with which you are comfortable. • evaluate your portfolio. learn if your investments can meet your retirement income needs. A financial professional can help you with these steps by performing a financial needs analysis. Once the review is complete, the professional can make a recommendation on an asset allocation that meets your needs. So stop worrying, and contact your financial professional today. He or she can help you make certain your portfolio is allocated appropriately for your retirement needs! Why We Should Support our Local Business This month instead giving you my opinion on the importance of supporting our local businesses I’ve made a list of “very good” reasons to help you form your own. Every article and news story I’ve read all agree on the same things, but in different words of course. 1. Independent businesses spend more on local labor, goods procured locally for resale, and services from other local businesses. This means that more of the money you spend at a locally owned store stays in your local economy, supporting a variety of other businesses and jobs. 2. Three times as much money stays in the local economy when you buy goods and services from locally owned businesses instead of large chain stores. 3. A recent study in Salt Lake City conducted by Civic Economics found that Local retailers put approximately 52 percent of their revenue back into the local economy, while compared to just 14 percent for the national chain retailers. 4. The study also found that local restaurants re-circulate an average of 79 percent of their revenue locally, compared to 30 percent for the chain eateries.

5. Just a 10% shift in local spending from chains to local businesses, would generate a significant increase in local economic activity, creating many new opportunities and jobs. 6. Local businesses contribute more to charity than national chains. 7. The arrival of a big-box store decreases the number of retail jobs in a region. 8. Studies have found that median incomes have risen faster in places with more small businesses when compared to those dominated by big businesses. 9. Half of working Americans either own or work for a small business, and small businesses create two out of every three new jobs. 10. When you buy a product or service from a small business that money goes right back into the local economy. Bottom Line! Small business owners need economic growth and certainty to grow, expand and succeed. Let’s support our small business community by shopping at the local hardware store or specialty shop, having dinner at a local restaurant or just having an ice cream at the shop down the street. We must help the small business community thrive and grow in order to save our locally owned businesses and the American Dream.

Distracted driving is dangerous I recently read an article about the use of cell phones while driving; although I was surprised by what I read it has proven to be true in my experience. I believe I am one of the lucky people who can say they have given up texting while driving; I have also decided to stop talking on my cell phone while driving as well. It can wait till I stop or I can just hand the phone to a passenger and let them handle the call or text. I must admit; I am not the best person with technology to begin with, my kids laugh at my grasp of technology. I am smart enough however to learn from my mistakes and take the sound advice of others. The article stated that driving requires 3 tasks to take place at one time you must 1) View the road , 2) Keep your hands on the wheel, 3) Concentrate on the task at hand “Driving”. A few days after reading the article I found myself driving down a country road texting. I drove onto the shoulder while looking away from the road and almost hit a mail box then about 100 yards later I found myself crossing the double yellow line. If there was a car headed towards me there would have been a big problem. My mind was not on driving: I was looking at my phone hunting and pecking out my text message, I only had one hand on the wheel, and my mind was fully occupied with the work involved and the message I was texting. I was giving no thought at all to my driving and posed a great risk to myself and others. The Lyden Groups Insurance agency fully supports the pledge “It can wait”. We hope you can join us and make the roads a safer place. Thank you, Steve Lyden The Lyden Group Insurance Agency

Take Your Medications the Right Way Medications can make a world of difference—if you take them the right way. Half the time, though, this doesn’t happen, at least when it comes to drugs doctors prescribe for chronic conditions. Sometimes people miss doses. Or they might stop refilling the prescription or never get it filled in the first place. Why does this happen? Well, certainly cost or side effects of drugs can be an issue. Also, complex dosing schedules or multiple drugs can be really confusing. You might feel as though you need a multi-page spreadsheet just to keep track! The problem is not taking medications the right way can threaten your health, increase complications, and lower your quality of life. And sometimes skipping doses can increase the risk of resistant strains of certain “bugs.” Do you need help with taking your medications the right way? Lean on our staff at Marra’s Pharmacy. We can help you increase the benefits and decrease the risks of taking your medications. When we talk, it’s helpful to know about all the medications you’re taking and about any problems you’ve had in the past, such as allergic reactions or trouble swallowing. We can also answer questions like these: •

How soon can I expect to feel better? When I start to feel better, can I stop taking the drug?

Do I need a refill, or can I stop when the bottle is empty?

Are there any drugs, supplements, or foods I should avoid while taking this medication?

Are there any special directions for taking or storing this medication?

Is there a cheaper generic version available?

What should I do if I have side effects? What are the most common ones?

What should I do if I miss a dose?

We can also help learn how to better manage your prescriptions. We can discuss a few tricks of the trade like such as our refill reminder program, compliance or bubble packaging and our most recent program – Simplify My Meds. With Simplify My Meds, our staff contacts you or caregiver once a month to verify the medications you are taking and to see what refills if any you need. Additionally, since we participate in ALL HEALTH PLANS, we are able to work with you and you’re prescriber to provide the most cost effective regimen, either by less expensive alternatives or greater days’ supply. Most importantly, our program and goal is centered on making sure you have the most cost effective therapy that works for you so you can spend your time doing what you enjoy versus running to the pharmacy every week. As you can see, taking medications isn’t a time to wing it! Fortunately you have the pharmacists at Marra’s Pharmacy who can assist you. All you have to do is ask! Call us at 237-2110 or email at rx@marrarx.com!

Did you know that not all pool chemicals are created equal? Unlike other brands, Azure brand pool chemicals are proudly made in West Virginia. Azure brand pool chemicals use only the purest raw materials without fillers or byproducts to produce the best quality pool chemicals available; giving you the best value to treat your pool for less money with fewer headaches! Why buy chemicals that use fillers and byproducts to add weight to their products? Why buy chemicals that you will end up having to buy twice as many to treat your pool? Choose a brand you can trust, choose Azure brand pool chemicals.

pool on a weekly basis you are chemically cleaning your pool water of these undesirable materials. Azure brand Shox-All-Plus is the best choice for shocking your pool. Unlike the bag shocks sold at the big box stores and online retailers, Azure brand Shox-All-Plus is pH neutral and contains a proprietary blend of clarifiers to help your pool sparkle like never before! Since Azure brand Shox-All-Plus is pH neutral it won’t harm your vinyl liner! And unlike other less expensive bag shocks Azure brand Shox-All-Plus won’t cloud your water. Use one 1lbs bag of Azure Shox-All-Plus per 10,000 gallons of pool water each week for sparkling results!

For example, let’s see how the competitions 3” chlorine tablets stack up to Azure brand 3” chlorine tablets. Azure brand 3” chlorine tablets are packaged in buckets with easy open lids and are individually wrapped for easy application. The big box and online retailers typically sell tablets in difficult to open buckets and the tablets aren’t individually wrapped. Azure 3” chlorine tablets are a full 8 ounces, which means they treat more pool water than the smaller tablets sold at big box and online stores. This means that when you purchase a 25lbs bucket of chlorine tablets you are receiving a full 25lbs of 3” chlorine tablets, that’s 50 individually wrapped 3” chlorine tablets per 25lbs bucket! More and more tablets are now 7 ounce or less! You will now have to buy more tablets to treat your pool. 99% of the weight of each Azure 3” tablets is Trichloro-striazinetrione, compare that to the big box and internet sites which barely top 84%! This all means that Azure brand 3”chlorine tablets give you more chlorine for your dollar than the bargain brands. Use one Azure 3” chlorine tablet per 10,000 gallons of water each week to maintain a free chlorine reading in your pool.

Algae are one celled plants that can turn your beautiful blue pool to a green mess in as little as one day! Did you know that millions of algae spores are carried by the wind everyday into outdoor swimming pools! Your best course of action is to use algaecide! But why buy big bulky 1 gallon jugs of algaecide? Try Azure Poly 60 algaecide and stop lugging around those jugs! Unlike the typical 1 gallon jug of algaecide Azure Poly 60 algaecide will not cause foaming in your pool, and unlike other algaecides Azure Poly 60 algaecide does not contain metals which can potentially leave unsightly stains on your pool surfaces! Use 4 ounces per 10,000 gallons of pool water each week to keep the algae spores from turning your crystal blue pool into a green swamp!

Did you know that approximately 90% of the chlorine you use in your swimming pool goes to fight algae? This means that only 10% is available for oxidizing other undesirable materials in your pool. These other undesirable materials include waste products (like sweat), suntan lotion and most importantly bacteria and other water borne pathogens. This is why you need to shock your pool on a weekly basis. By shocking your

Free Yourself from Cycle of Emotional Investing

In many areas of your life, you’re probably aware that it’s useful to keep emotions out of your decision-making — and that’s certainly the case with investing. However, it can be difficult to keep your feelings from influencing your investment decisions. But you may find it easier to invest with your head, rather than your heart, if you know a little something about two different cycles: the market cycle and your emotional cycle. Let’s start with the market cycle. If you’ve been investing for a while, you’re aware (probably highly aware) that the financial markets are rarely static — they are always moving up and down, at least in the short term. (Over the very long term, a period of many decades, the markets have trended up.) But these short-term movements, while perhaps appearing as “zigs” and “zags” on a daily basis, actually form a pattern, or a cycle, that can last for months or years. These cycles are known as bull (up) or bear (down) markets. Going back to the Great Depression, the average bear market has lasted 21 months, while the average bull market has extended for 57 months, according to research from Standard and Poor’s Index Services. These market cycles greatly influence investors’ attitudes and behavior. In fact, they lead to the formation of investors’ emotional cycles. During bull markets, investors tend to feel optimism, excitement and even euphoria. But once a bull market ends and a bear market begins, investors start getting nervous. And the longer and deeper the bear market, the greater the depth of emotion felt by investors. These emotions can begin as anxiety and then progress to denial, fear, desperation and panic. Furthermore, market cycles and emotional cycles don’t really align. For example, investors may well experience euphoria when the market has reached its high point and a bear market has just begun. For a while, then, these investors, fueled by their euphoric feelings over the big gains they’ve achieved, may continue pouring money into the market, even as it’s declining. This type of behavior, though, is probably better suited for when the market is already at a low, when investors’ dollars will buy more shares. Conversely, investors may reach the peak of their fearfulness at the end of a bear market, just when things are about to turn around. At this point, their fear may hold them back from investing — even though, with prices low, it can be a good time to invest. Clearly, basing investment decisions on emotions can lead to poor choices. So don’t get caught up in this pattern. Instead, strive to follow a disciplined approach to investing. Build an investment portfolio that reflects your objectives, risk tolerance and time horizon, and seek to hold appropriate investments for the long term. Of course, you may well need to make adjustments along the way, but do it for the right reasons — such as a change in your goals or in the investments themselves — rather than as a reaction to the current market cycle. Our emotions are powerful, and their power can increase when applied to such a meaningful aspect of our life as our finances. But if you can detach yourself, as much as possible, from the emotional cycle of investing, you can avoid considerable angst — while helping clear the path to pursue your goals. United States Independents Day Facts •

The major objection to being ruled by Britain was taxation without representation. The colonists had no say in the decisions of English Parliament.

In May, 1776, after nearly a year of trying to resolve their differences with England, the colonies sent delegates to the Second Continental Congress. Finally, in June, admitting that their efforts were hopeless; a committee was formed to compose the formal Declaration of Independence. Headed by Thomas Jefferson, the committee also included John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Philip Livingston and Roger Sherman. On June 28, 1776, Thomas Jefferson presented the first draft of the declaration to Congress.

Betsy Ross, according to legend, sewed the first American flag in May or June 1776, as commissioned by the Congressional Committee.

Independence Day was first celebrated in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776.

The Liberty Bell sounded from the tower of Independence Hall on July 8, 1776, summoning citizens to gather for the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence by Colonel John Nixon.

June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress, looking to promote national pride and unity, adopted the national flag. “Resolved: that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.”

The word patriotism comes from the Latin patria, which means homeland or fatherland.

The first public Fourth of July event at the White House occurred in 1804.

Before cars ruled the roadway, the Fourth of July was traditionally the most miserable day of the year for horses, tormented by all the noise and by the boys and girls who threw firecrackers at them.

The first Independence Day celebration west of the Mississippi occurred at Independence Creek and was celebrated by Lewis and Clark in 1805.

On June 24, 1826, Thomas Jefferson sent a letter to Roger C. Weightman, declining an invitation to come to Washington, D.C. to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. It was the last letter that Jefferson, who was gravely ill, ever wrote.

Both Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died on Independence Day, July 4, 1826.

The 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence did not sign at the same time, nor did they sign on July 4, 1776. The official event occurred on August 2, 1776, when 50 men signed it.

The names of the signers of the Declaration of Independence were withheld from the public for more than six months to protect the signers. If independence had not been achieved, the treasonable act of the signers would have, by law, resulted in their deaths.

Thomas McKean was the last to sign in January, 1777.

The origin of Uncle Sam probably began in 1812, when Samuel Wilson was a meat packer who provided meat to the US Army. The meat shipments were stamped with the initials U.S. Someone joked that the initials stood for “Uncle Sam”. This joke eventually led to the idea of Uncle Sam symbolizing the United States government.

In 1941, Congress declared 4th of July a federal legal holiday. It is one of the few federal holidays that have not been moved to the nearest Friday or Monday.

WHAT’S IN YOUR CLOSET MUSINGS ON GIFTS It’s a gift giving time of year. There are more bridal showers, weddings and, of course, graduations than during other months. If you like to tailor your presents to the recipient’s interests and personalities maybe you were tempted to purchase Bob Dylan’s lyrics for “Like a Rolling Stone” for your guitar playing high school graduate. Perhaps the 2 million it just brought at auction was too much of a stretch for your pocketbook. And for the art-loving newlyweds in your life you considered a stellar piece of modern art, a Frances Bacon painting maybe. One recently sold at auction for 142 million. A tad rich for your blood? We at Dennis Holzman Antiques think we have the perfect solutions. We have an inventory of thousands of unique items, most under a couple of thousand dollars. Need a gift for the lawyer in your life? We have a wonderful signed photograph of NY Governor and Supreme Court Justice Charles Evans Hughes. Steve Jobs: Co-Founder of Apple “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” ~ from his 2005 Stanford commencement address.

FEATURED BUSINESS OUR HISTORY Since 1958 the Valente Family has been serving traditional Italian food at its namesake restaurant in Watervliet, NY. Many of our recipes were created by family matriarch, Nadine Valente, who was born in Silvi Marina, a coastal village overlooking the Adriatic Sea in central Abruzzo, Italy. We have always striven to use ingredients that are fresh and full flavored when creating our original recipes and are committed to providing our customers with a delightful culinary experience. On September 7, 2003 a devastating fire destroyed the building and all of it’s contents. With the help of may friends and the support all our customers, we were able to rebuild.

We are a traditional family business that has kept your favorite recipes alive by handing

them down to Jack, the third generation of Family Chefs. The Valente Family has been a part of the local community for over 55 years creating a dining experience of full flavored home cooked meals for our loyal customers. Customers that we consider to be a part of our family also. Stop down, have our 1st place award winning Mac & Cheese or select another great meal from our full menu offering. We look forward to you becoming the newest member of the Valente Family Restaurant and serving you for may years to come. A Toast to Your Health! The Valente Family

Bob Ross “The Happy Painter” Who was Bob Ross? His signature Afro and gentle personality made Bob Ross “Americas Favorite Art Instructor”. With his gentle personality and soothing voice young and old alike would be mesmerized watching him paint. He would actually invite viewers to paint along with him or “sit back in your favorite easy chair and just relax”. His easy to learn “wet-on-wet” © technique made people believe they could paint. “Talent is a pursued interest. Anything that you’re willing to practice, you can do.” – Bob Ross Bob grew up in Daytona Beach Florida. At 18 years old he joined the Air Force and was stationed in Alaska. During his 20 year Air Force career he spent his free time painting the beautiful Alaskan landscape which became the inspiration for most of his paintings. One fun fact about Bob; He used to paint prospector gold pans and sold them to locals and tourists when he worked as a part time bartender. Bob’s easy to learn painting technique uses nontraditional paint brushes and simple instruction that guides students step by step through the painting to create beautiful landscapes with “Happy Little Trees”. Students don’t worry about making mistakes. Bob always said “There are no mistakes, just Happy Accidents”.

Traditional Artists have criticized Bob’s style as too simplistic but he didn’t pretend to teach fine art or traditional art. He taught people that they could do a very good painting with very little instruction, a lot of happiness and teach them how to create. Sadly Bob Ross passed away on July 4th, 1995 at the age of 52. Though he’s no longer with us, his TV show, The Joy of Painting® continues to air on over 95% of PBS channels. The Bob Ross Company continues to train certified instructors who travel the US, Europe, Canada, Central America, Turkey and Japan sharing the Joy of Painting® to anyone with the desire to create and put their dreams on canvas. Bob Ross continues to touch people’s lives through his television shows. Watch a show, take a class, forget about the stress in your life and experience, “The Joy of Painting”®.

“All you need to paint is a few tools, a little instruction, and a vision in your mind.” — Bob Ross

A little about Janice... As a Certified Bob Ross Landscape, Floral and Wildlife Instructor, Janice has the privilege of instructing people in the “wet on wet” technique that Bob Ross made famous through Public Television. She enjoys working with people and seeing the joy on each person’s face as their own unique masterpiece comes to life. Classes are designed to teach technique and composition while providing individual attention and a whole lot of fun. No matter what a person’s skill level, everyone goes home with a completed painting and sense of accomplishment. When she is not teaching Bob Ross classes Janice enjoys quilting and decorative painting, specializing in glassware. She also enjoys traveling with her husband Kevin and spending time with her children and grandchildren

"All you need to paint is a few tools, a little instruction, and a vision in your mind." — Bob Ross

“You must be very patient, very persistent. The world isn’t going to shower gold coins on you just because you have a good idea. You’re going to have to work like crazy to bring that idea to the attention of people. They’re not going to buy it unless they know about it.” – Herb Kelleher

For over 15 years, School of Rock has been inspiring the world to rock on stage and in life. We believe the best way to learn music is to play music. We take students from the lesson room to the stage, developing both their confidence and musicianship with programs designed for all skill levels. Founded as a single school in Philadelphia, PA in 1998, School of Rock has become a growing international franchise, operating over 100 schools in the U.S., Mexico, and Brazil with openings in Canada, The Philippines, Chile, and Australia. School of Rock Albany opened it’s doors September 14, 2013 though owner David Bodie had already been teaching at the Tenafly New Jersey school for over three years. Bodie, and his family, jumped at the opportunity to bring the program to the Capital District. School of Rock is creating the world’s next generation of rockers through music programs that are designed to create a supportive environment where music students of all skill levels are comfortable yet challenged at every turn. The core School of Rock programs are mainly for kids 7-18 but we recently

launched an adult performance program and a pre-school program called, “Little Wing,” designed to introduce toddlers to the joy of music. So truly people of all ages can rock at School of Rock. In addition to individual private music instruction on guitar, bass, vocals, keyboards and/or drums, students also learn how to jam with their peers in a weekly practice session. For children in our performance program each season they play live rock shows at local venues, sometimes with in just a few short months of picking up their instrument. This past week end marked the first shows of our performance students who performed Pink Floyd’s The Wall at The Low Beat in Albany. The best way to learn about School of Rock and what they do is to drop in and visit. The knowledgeable staff are available to schedule a tour, free trial lesson, or arrange for a visit during one of our group ensemble programs. Arrangements can be made by phone, through the website albany. schoolofrock.com, or in person. The school is located directly behind the Newton Plaza and open on Monday - Wednesday 2pm - 8:30pm and Saturdays 10am - 4pm. Or reach us by Phone 783-7625!
