What to look for in a quality table Solid Hardwoods commonly used in American furniture manufacturing include Oak, Ash, Maple, Cherry, Birch, Beech, Poplar, Alder, and Walnut. Every hardwood board will share the characteristics of it’s species. Yet each board displays a face which is uniquely it’s own, having been formed over the long lifetime of the individual tree from which it came. Don’t be fooled by veneers, laminates, and “paper “finishes. Ask what the product is made of. A reputable dealer or salesperson will tell you. Expansion And Contraction of your solid wood furniture. ALL solid wood furniture expands and contracts in changing temperatures and humidity. Excessive heat can be a problem. Avoid placing your wood furniture too close to a steam radiator or hot air duct. This can result in expansion, checking or cracking. Humidity ... few people have a humidifier in a dining area, but keep in mind that excessive dampness and moist air can cause swelling of joints and wood grain and result in warping. Happily, these problems generally cure themselves when dampness is removed. You will definitely notice the seam (“gap”) in your table top change from season to season. Finish (TOP-COATS) Most quality manufacturers today are using catalyzed (protective) finishes. These lacquers and varnishes have chemical additives mixed into them which make them dry harder & faster than traditional lacquer finishes. Many are dried under ultraviolet lighting (“ovens”) to get a uniform and complete dry time. These finishes are great and most are resistant to most household spills like beer, wine, soda, milk, catsup, mustard, coffee, etc. Some can even protect against chemical spills like nail polish remover, alcohol, and lacquer thinner. However we try not to “over-sell” these finishes. These are still wood tops. They can be scratched or dented depending on how you use them. You must be careful with extreme heat. You cannot place hot pans or dishes from the microwave on the surface without a hot plate or protection of some kind. The more educated you are about the product you buy ... the more you will enjoy it. These newer finishes do not require a lot of maintenance. Most manufacturers recommend wiping with a damp (not soaking wet) cloth. They do not require weekly polishing - just a few times per year with a cream furniture polish (like Guardman). Do not use a polish with silicone in it. Other Table Top Surfaces Formica is generally well accepted and very durable. Most consumers know what to expect from this surface because of it’s common use as kitchen counter tops. Ceramic tile top tables are very durable depending on the manufacturer. Good quality U.S. Manufacturers use actual floor tiles in their tops. They have exceptional strength and durability. They are scratch resistant and heat resistant. Quality manufacturers use rubber silicone grout instead of traditional “cement” grout. The silicone grout is stain resistant and flexible. It can expand and contract with the wood trim. Dupont Corian or other solid surface materials like “transolid” is a solid surface material blending natural material and acrylic resins that forms a surface with

elegance and durability. It is stain resistant, non-porous, easily maintained and repaired. Everyday stains clean up with soapy water or cleanser while scratches and stubborn stains can be removed easily with scouring or light sanding with a scotchbrite pad. You must protect the surface from heat. Granite tops are natural stone. Under normal conditions it will not stain, chip, burn, scar, or scratch. Spills should be wiped up immediately to help insure against staining or etching of the stone. We recommend using coasters and trivets to protect the surface. Granite tops should be sealed yearly with a standard stone sealer product to insure against staining. Many foods and cleaners contain acids or alkalis that could etch the stone so read your care instructions. Glass tops are surprisingly durable. Good common sense and the use of placemats and trivets will keep glass tops beautiful for years.

What’s The Vision Kev? As I sit here and think about how lucky I am to have two seasoned advertising and marketing consultants working with me, I’m thinking about what can we do with this publication to continue to help small businesses prosper and grow. What is my vision for the future of the Our Towne Colonie? Well to sum it up in a couple of short bullets..... EXPANSION AND GROWTH. There are several thousand small businesses in the territory where the Our Town Colonie is distributed. I envision with the addtional experienced staff we now have, to be able to visit these businesses and see how we can help them succeed. As the publication grows, I
see it expanding and possibly splitting into two or three areas of focus with even more density in distribution.
FULL SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES.
Along with advertising, which will continue to be the heart of the publication, focusing on small business, I want to expand our offerings to include : Grand Opening Support Signage, Featured Grand Opening Articles, Bounce houses and Family fun. Facilitation and Process Improvement As a trained GE facilitator and process improvement specialist, I can work with business owners to identify issues and produce action plans that deliver results and stablalize your business. Auto Insurance FAQ’s When should I add my children to my auto policy? The general rule with most insurance companies is when your son or daughter gets their learners permit they should be added to your insurance policy. Insurance companies guidelines differ however, some will allow you to add your child as a non-driver to the insurance policy until they get their license. The reason is the carrier would prefer an updated list of regular and soon to be drivers for the vehicles they insure. The carrier knows they will get additional premium when the driver becomes licensed. Should young drivers get their own policy? When your son or daughter becomes licensed you have a tough decision to make. Should you add them to your policy or should they get their own policy? Due to the high cost of auto insurance a young driver can get more coverage for far less money by staying on the parents policy. The problem is if there is an accident the rates will go up at renewal for all vehicles insured on the policy. In the event of a major claim or multiple claims the policy could be canceled all together. What’s the best solution? Call your agent and ask what the carriers’ policy is in reference to adding your child to your policy when they get their permit; and when they become licensed. We have a carrier who allows young drivers to be spun off the parent’s policy onto their own policy. The benefit is they share the parents rating structure and pricing but have their own policy. In the event of an accident or claim it would not affect the parents policy. Do I need more insurance with a young driver? You might consider adding a $1,000,000 umbrella policy, which will provide additional liability protection for your
home and auto policies. Correctly structured it could cover multiple auto policies at one residence. Umbrella policies are a cost effective way of adding extra protection. Who do I call with questions about auto insurance? Feel free to call the professionals at The Lyden Group Insurance Agency we are always happy to help. Call 877-7018 or e-mail steve@lydengroup.com

217 Remsen St ◆ Cohoes, NY 12047 ◆ (518) 237-2110 Q & A’s: Medication Safety in Children Curiosity kills more than the cat…. Did you know that medications are the top cause of poisoning in kids? Together, we can help change that! To get started, here are a few answers to some questions parents commonly ask about medication safety for kids. 1. Where should I store medications? People may call it the “medicine cabinet,” but it’s not a good place to store medications. Bathrooms are moist and can lower the strength of a medication. Plus, they’re a little too easy for little hands to get into. Instead, keep drugs, eye drops, and vitamins out of sight and out of reach of children. Try a high place, such as a hall closet or kitchen shelf. Don’t forget that a curious kid may easily find medicine in a purse or dresser drawer. 2. How should I measure medicine? With young children, it’s especially important to get the dosing right. Always use the dosing device that comes with the medicine. Measuring spoons or other home utensils aren’t the same as a medication syringe or cup. If you use a syringe, try squirting the medicine on the inside of the cheek where there are fewer taste buds. If your child takes the wrong dosage, call me right away. I can tell you whether or not it’s cause for concern. Or call Poison Control for assistance as well at 1-800-222-1222. 3. Does a spoonful of sugar help the medicine go down? Some medicines can taste pretty nasty to a child! It may be okay to mix a liquid medication with chocolate or maple syrup. However, don’t do this for babies. If they don’t finish a bottle, they won’t get the right amount of medication. And check with your pharmacist before crushing and mixing a tablet or capsule with food. 4. Is it okay to share prescription medications? No matter how similar their symptoms, please do not have your kids share medications. And never repackage them. Keep medications in their original childproof container. 5. How long can my child use a medication? Be sure to not use drugs past their expiration date. Most drugs lose their strength after about a year. If you have any question about whether or not to use a drug, talk with your child’s doctor or your pharmacist and remember we take back and destroy safely expired medications. 6. Are OTC drugs safe for kids? Be sure to read labels. Not all over-the-counter (OTC) medications are safe for children of all ages. Of course, never give aspirin to any child—it can cause serious illness, even death. Make sure you know a drug’s potential side effects. But stay alert to any adverse reactions. Kids can be more sensitive to drugs than adults. For example, cold medications can cause excitability or severe drowsiness in kids, even at lower doses. The FDA recommends that you not use OTC cough and cold medications in children younger than age two. Rest, clear fluids, and a humidifier may be the best route to recovery from colds and flu. Remember: There’s no substitute for getting your specific questions answered and therefore please talk to our pharmacists about your child’s medications. We can also suggest OTC drugs and discuss any concerns you have about side effects. If you don’t remember a question until you’re home, that’s okay. Just give us a call at 237-2110!

How to Increase Home Property Values With Regular Home Repair & Maintenance Sometimes people let family history, childhood memories, and money get in the way of making home improvements to increase the value of their house. But we have to remember that property is one of our biggest assets and we must take good care of it. Even though it will require some time and money in the short-term, maintaining our houses and making improvements along the way will allow us to avoid those expensive, major home repairs in the long run. You’ve heard the old saying “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure....” right?
maybe yard tools. Clean up oil or exhaust stains before they discolor the floor or garage door. Garages can carry major value for a house! Remember, you can fix most common repairs around the home on your own without hiring others. And if you’re not confident about a specific job, you can always ask for a consultation from a trained professional at your local Phillips Hardware Store.
By taking good care of our real estate, should we ever decide to sell, we will have a much more valuable piece of property that isn’t wrought with numerous maintenance concerns. Some of these could even prevent the sale of your home! In the spirit of DIY projects, here are 7 areas to focus on that will help you increase and maintain the value of your home: 1. Interior: When something gets dented or scratched such as a tile, wall, or wood floor, fix it within a reasonable amount of time. The longer you wait the more you’ll get used to the problem and may even forget about it. These problems can eventually get bigger and bigger and lead to an expensive problem that you’ll be forced to repair at some point. 2. Water Leaks: Periodically check for water leaks. A great strategy for doing this is to check the water meter, then cease all water usage for an hour and check the meter again. If it changed, you have a leak, which needs serious attention. Waiting will only increase not only the damage, but also your water bill! 3. Roofing: Check gutters to make sure they carry water away from the roof and aren’t getting backed up. The last thing you want is roof and gutter damage. Also, check the chimney flashing and shingles to make sure they are all secure and don’t need repairs. Chimneys can be expensive to fix! 4. Attic: Many of us don’t go up to the attic all winter long, but you still should check your attic for any leaks or holes after a big storm. You need to make sure that there is no moisture damaging the internal structure of your home. One sign of water damage from the attic may be peeling paint on ceilings or walls. 5. Masonry: Inspect the foundation, patios, and walkways every few months, especially after weeks of snowdrifts have been packed against the walls of your home. Moisture can easily seep into pores, freeze, and expand, causing major structural damage. 6. Yard: Keep lawns and bushes reasonably trim. Overgrown plant life against the house can be detrimental to paint jobs and shingles, especially if the shingles are wood and not treated or coated. 7. Garage: Garages can become massive storage rooms. Keep them clean and tidy and use them just for the car and

What’s Smarter -Paying Off Debts or Investing? It probably doesn’t happen as much as you’d like, but from time to time, you have some extra disposable income. When this happens, how should you use the funds? Assuming you have adequate emergency savings — typically, three to six months’ worth of living expenses — should you pay off debts, or fund your IRA or another investment account? There’s no one “correct” answer — and the priority of these options may change, depending on your financial goals. However, your first step may be to consider what type of debt you’re thinking of paying down with your extra money. For example, if you have a consumer loan that charges a high rate of interest — and you can’t deduct the interest payments from your taxes — you might conclude that it’s a good idea to get rid of this loan as quickly as possible. Still, if the loan is relatively small, and the payments aren’t really impinging on your monthly cash flow that much, you might want to consider putting any extra money you have into an investment that has the potential to offer longer-term benefits. For instance, you might decide to fully fund your IRA for the year before tackling minor debts. (In 2014, you can contribute up to $5,500 to a traditional or Roth IRA, or $6,500 if you’re 50 or older.)

When it comes to making extra mortgage payments, however, the picture is more complicated. In the first place, mortgage interest is typically tax deductible, which makes your loan less “expensive.” Even beyond the issue of deductibility, you may instinctively feel that it’s best to whittle away your mortgage and build as much equity as possible in your home. But is that always a smart move? Increasing your home equity is a goal of many homeowners — after all, the more equity you have in your home, the more cash you’ll get when you sell it. Yet, if your home’s value rises — which, admittedly, doesn’t always happen — you will still, in effect, be building equity without having to divert funds that could be placed elsewhere, such as in an investment. In this situation, it’s important to weigh your options. Do you want to lower your mortgage debts and possibly save on cumulative interest expenses? Or would you be better served to invest that money for potential growth or interest payments? Here’s an additional consideration: If you tied up most of your money in home equity, you may well lose some flexibility and liquidity. If you were to fall ill or lose your job, could you get money out of your home if your emergency savings fund fell short? Possibly, in the form of a home equity line of credit or a second mortgage, but if you were not bringing in any income, a bank might not even approve such a loan — no matter how much equity you have in your house. You may more easily be able to sell stocks, bonds or other investment vehicles to gain access to needed cash. Getting some extra money once in a while is a nice problem to have. Still, you won’t want to waste the opportunity — so, when choosing to pay down debts or put the money into investments, think carefully. WHAT’S IN YOUR CLOSET MUSINGS ON STUFF
I have a great job. I surround myself with objects that communicate with me. From the very first time I bought a piece of silver made by Paul Revere (40 years ago) I have been open to a visceral discussion with my inventory. No I haven’t lost my mind, they talk to me on a very primal level. William Carlos Williams in his epic poem “Paterson” wrote the line “No ideas but in things” which was sort of a groundbreaking statement for poetry at the time. It was a movement away from concepts and abstractions and towards mining the root of emotions and thoughts through things. So I sit in my shop among thousands of items and I must admit that they are not all chatty. Some, however, speak volumes. Take, for instance, Franklin Roosevelt’s driver’s license, which I am holding. It states his employer as the U.S. Government and his place of residence as The White House. It literally talks nonstop about a four term President who was crippled by polio and deftly underplayed his disability. He loved to ride in public in his Lincoln K-series or his Plymouth Phaeton at high speeds with the top down. His vehicles were all equipped with hand controls to allow him to operate them without the use of his legs. But wait, a newspaper begins a strident monologue. It is a March 1824 copy of the Cheraw [SC] Intelligencer and Southern Register. It is not some random copy, but actually U.S. Secretary of State John Quincy Adams’ copy AND it discusses the likelihood of him successfully being elected as President in November of that year. I can vaguely see Adams rifling through the pages trying to gauge public opinion. But suddenly he is interrupted by the chatter of a framed group of plaster cameos of classical sculpture. A wealthy couple is apparently taking the Grand Tour in the summer of 1886 and find themselves in Firenze and quibbling over which souvenirs to take back to their home in Albany. Feel free interrupt us at Dennis Holzman Antiques and join in the conversation with all our “things”.
