Every Time you turn around, there are immediate financial needs. Things that just can not wait – paying your mortgage, meeting car payments and funding your child’s education all take priority. With all of these day-to-day needs competing for your limited funds, it is hard to find the resources – and the motivation – to plan for retirement. But if nothing else, the cost of waiting to plan for your retirement is a strong motivator. consider this example: Ernie is 45 years old and plans to contribute $500 monthly to his retirement plans. Ernie wants to explore a couple of options. Plan A will begin saving today, assuming a 7% rate of return, and continue for 8 years. The account balance will then continue to grow to retirement from investment yields only. Plan B, on the other hand, will defer the start of saving for 6 years and continue to save until he has sufficient savings to grow to the same amount of money at age 65 as Plan A. compare how many years and extra savings dollars are needed in Plan B to accumulate the same amount as Plan A potentially could accumulate in only eight years, simply by starting early. Bob and Bill each plan to make a $5,000 annual retirement contribution for the next 20 years.
Age to Begin Savings
year (assuming a 28% tax bracket). Because of the impact of l benefit packages. In fact, Rate of Return compound interest over time, the difference between what Bob and Bill have for retirement at age 65 is signifi cant: In fact, Bob Monthly contribution ch for more than 130 years. would have an accumulated value of $446,268, while Bill would number of years to Save $174,398. The are even dunk. more dramatic if Bob mayaccumulate be, well, aresults slam Total contributions also chooses a tax-deferred retirement funding vehicle earning a 7% annual interest rate (taxes on the earning are subtracted Account Balance at age 65 ®age 65 assuming a 28% tax bracket). Taxable contributions CLUat & from age 25-45 would accumulate $466,268 at age 65, while taxdeferred contributions would result in $639,080 (subject to tax when withdrawn).
Plan A 45 7% $500 8 $48,000 $143,845
Plan B 51 7% $500 14 $85,000 $142,981
you really can’t afford to wait for the “Right time” to start planning for your retirement. If you plan early and take advantage of taxdeferred products, you’ll have a better chance of making your retirement goals a reality.

What’s in Your Closet? I’ve always experienced a sense of place. I am not alone with this phenomenon. For the decades that I operated a business in downtown Albany I was immersed in the history, art and architecture of my surroundings. Given what I do for a living, it was easy to surround myself with the tangible evidence of the above. I know I am not singularly obsessed, because I have scores of researchers and collectors who have sought out what I have compiled…thousands of 18th, 19th and 20th c. remnants which illuminate the local past. I have owned many singularly important items during those years…an 18th c. Quackenbos receipt for selling rum to the Indians; a watercolor illustrated journal of Albany Mayor and brewer John Taylor; an archive of photographs of the phases of construction of the South Mall; an 1840’s letter from an Albany mayor promoting the use of masonry in building construction because of a rash of fires destroying wood framed structures; a 1930 letter from Charles Lindbergh to Cuyler Reynolds thanking Albany for the “key” to the city (three years after the fact!); the business records of Annesley & Co., etc. Now that I have moved my storefront to Cohoes, I am equally enthralled with place. I have begun to learn about the area’s vital history and am actively acquiring bits of the past to help light my path. The catalyst for writing this ramble was my recent purchase of a spectacular 15” high coin silver ewer presented to William Chadwick from his New York City business partner, Peter Remsen. In 1843 Chadwick moved to Cohoes to try his hand in the textile business. For a number of years he served as president of the Harmony Cotton Mills. In 1862 he purchased an ongoing knitting mill at the corner of Ontario and Remsen Streets which became Chadwick & Co., and then, in 1885, was reorganized and named Ontario Knitting Co. This bit of history was taking place a stones easy toss from my doorway. I also have in stock an 1844 printed “proposal of the Cohoes Company for selling their water power, or mill privileges on the Canals at Cohoes Falls”; a 24” x 20” late 19thc. photograph of Star Knitting Co. by the Troy photographer Lloyd; a scarce 1931 lithograph by noted artist Louis Lozowick titled: “City on the Rock, Cohoes”, and many other items in my expanding inventory of local items.

Message From
Kevin Feedback Is a gift. Especially honest feedback. There are so few times in your life that you receive honest feedback. Everyone is always trying to be “correct” and not wanting to hurt anyones feelings. Of course there is a right way to give feedback, whether that sharing of information is positive or negative. We know we all can do better and be better. A family member, friend or colleague that is truthful, empathetic and compassionate with sharing honest feedback is truly a blessing..... sometimes I dare say a blessing in disguise. One of my honest feedback aha! moments happened a long time ago when I was working in a professional capacity at GE Plastics. I was sent to a week long training called Interpersonal Skills and Relationships. Some of my co-workers called it “charm school”. Well, on the day of arrival, we were all segmented into smaller groups of about 15 participants each. We all had to give a short 5-10 minute presentation to the rest of our group about ourselves. Our instructor only had one rule. Because we really didn’t know each other we had to give honest feedback. At the end of our presentation we remained in front of the group and captured with a flip chart, our own individual honest feedback. Well I wrote my feedback, I was receiving sentences that contained words like, tough, unapproachable, headstrong, rough and several others that quickly made me see that I was perceived, through my honest feedback, as not the easiest person to get along with. Yes, I know as you gaze at my smiling photo above, that it’s hard for you to believe what I’m telling you. Over the next week we learned a lot about interpersonal communication and giving and receiving feedback the correct way. I actually enjoyed the training. Roll the film of my life ahead seven years.... and I’m now at another GE training session for plant and project management and wouldn’t you know it, they kicked off our small group interaction with another honest feedback session. Oh boy here I go again....... I do my presentation and get ready for the barrage of honest feedback form the cannons. I start to write down words and phrases like, nice guy, approachable, listens well, salt of the earth. I’m thinking “did someone else just do their presentation and not me?” I couldn’t complete writing my feedback down because I started laughing and everyone was wondering what’s up with this. I told them
the seven years before feedback story. I have to admit “charm school” changed me. Why all this stuff about feedback? Well although it’s hasn’t been a, “walk in the park” as they say, with getting the Our Towne Colonie back on it’s feet again, I have had several readers take the time to call me and say they enjoy the publication content and information it provides. Some have even called to say it “brightened their day!” Receiving this feedback had also “brightened my day.” I’m willing to take any feedback you would like to share with me. I work to bring you dear readers, those business owners that are doing their best every day to make the community we live in a better place and that aim to deliver exceptional customer service. Perhaps when visiting them you can share some honest feedback with them. Did you receive some great service, extra care or someone willing to help solve your problem. Are they volunteering in some capacity to elevate our youth or others in our community less fortunate. If so, share some feedback with them and you just might brighten their day too. Hang in there... I heard spring is coming! Kevin Hotaling Owner and Publisher, Our Towne Colonie

Tips For Safe and Cost Effective Home Heating
Checking your furnace can lower operating costs, protect your family against fire hazards and carbon monoxide poisoning and prevent your furnace from quitting at an inopportune time — such as in the middle of a dark and snowy night. Furnace Maintenance Checklist Try these steps to help your heating system operate safely, efficiently and economically all season long:
Turn off the electricity or gas to the furnace and replace the filter. If you haven’t regularly cleaned or replaced the filter, do it now and check it throughout the heating season. A clean filter will operate more efficiently. If you have a central air conditioning system that operates with the furnace blower, count on replacing the filter more often. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Remove dust from the furnace. Get all the crevices cleaned of dust. Vacuum the base and grills. And be sure to clear obstacles to the vents so air can freely flow. Install a programmable thermostat. A programmable thermostat is ideal for people who are away from home at set times throughout the week. A properly programmed thermostat can save you about $180 every year in energy costs, according to ENERGY STAR. Check for carbon monoxide leaks. Carbon
5
monoxide can be detected with an inexpensive test badge or battery operated alarm. Call the pros. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends scheduling a professional inspection each year for your furnace and all fuelburning home heating systems, including boilers, fireplaces, wood stoves, water heaters, chimneys, flues and vents. Is It Time For a New Furnace? If your furnace is more than 15 years old, ENERGY STAR recommends replacing it. However, if the furnace is in good working condition, you may want to live with it for a while longer unless you have a large house, lots of windows, high heating bills or a combination of all three. High-efficiency furnaces are 15 percent more efficient than conventional furnaces. We’re Here to Help Whether your home is palatial or modest, you’ll want to protect it with the right homeowners insurance. Yes spring will come, and with it brings a new season for your pets! I know it’s hard to believe that spring will come but it is around the corner and there are many things to consider for your pets. Regular grooming for your for pet is just as much medicinal as cosmetic. Grooming is not only a haircut, it’s maintaining and insuring it is tangle free and dead hair is removed in order for the skin to stay healthy. Often times in the spring as a groomer we see people who have waited through the winter to get their dogs groomed believing the long coat keeps them warm. This is true if the coat has been maintained and there are not tangles or mats however if the opposite is true and the coat is matted from all the winter conditions then the air can not circulate around the coat to allow the skin to breathe to keep them warm. Often times when we remove mats we see either hotspots blemishes or sores where either moisture or debris has been trapped beneath the mats. As a result we have no choice but to shave the pets coat off which could irritate and be uncomfortable to your pet. Also to mention it is not a desired look for the cosmetic or artistic part of what a groomer does. Regular grooming’s monthly to bimonthly will ensure the pets coat stays healthy and stay styled so that they’re always looking their best and feeling the greatest!
Other benefits and needs of regular grooming’s for your pet are clipping in filing the nails cleaning the ears and brushing the teeth. A professional groomer going throughout the coat and laying hands on the body of your dog monthly to bimonthly many times can find things to bring to your vets attention before they manifest into something serious. At our pet salon we never suspect or diagnose or try to replace the opinion of the veterinarian wthat hadn’t been there the month or two prior bringing this to you and your vet’s can sometimes prevent more serious things that could be causing this onset. We are looking forward to seeing everyone feeling the best looking their best and strutting in a park somewhere soon!!!! Wishing everyone a warm and wonderful thoughts of spring!

Feeling out of balance? Throughout your life, you become a collection of things you have experienced: physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. These experiences are stored within you and they create congestion, resulting in “dis-ease.” There are major energy centers in the body (chakras), which are accumulation points for stuck energy. By clearing the chakras you affect healing often faster and easier than traditional approaches, which have a long list of side effects and often don’t address the underlying problem. Working with the chakras is a great way to restore balance. The word chakra means spinning wheel. Chakras are spinning wheels of energy inside and outside the body that can impact all areas of life: health (physical, emotional, and mental), finances, career, spiritual and personal growth, and relationships. So working with the chakras can have a profound impact on all areas of life. In March and April, Key 2ww Joy is offering a unique workshop series designed to address the whole person by balancing and clearing the chakras through an innovative combination of healing modalities that produce dramatic results! This allows participants to go to even deeper levels of healing and discover yet untapped potential hidden below the apparent blockages or wounds of the chakras. Elena A., from Niskayuna, NY had this to say about this multiple modality approach, “It helped me face things I didn’t want to face. It gently helped melt away obstacles that I was unconsciously creating for myself.” This workshop is open to all levels of experience and you may take the entire series or selected sessions. All that is required is an open mind, and a sincere desire to balance, heal, and change their experience of life. Call 518-598-6968 for dates, prices, and to register. Everyone deserves to experience more joy, balance, health, and peace in all aspects of their life, so balance the chakras and balance your life!

Finish getting the inside of the house ready before go you outside for the spring!
Want to spruce up your laundry room in the basement but concerned about all the snow leaking into your space? Ten loads of laundry would take just over 12 hours to complete. That is a lot of time spent in a damp and dreary space. Pictured here is a laundry space brightened up with tinted DRYLOK Extreme Masonry
Masonry Walls. Stir DRYLOK® thoroughly before and during application. Apply using a 3/4 in. nap roller, DRYLOK® Brush or good quality nylon bristle brush. If rolled, back-brush the first coat to fill any pinholes in the masonry. DRYLOK® must be worked into the pores of the masonry, making sure to fill all pores and pinholes. Proper coverage is important for waterproofing, 1 gallon covers a 8 ft. x 10 ft. area. A minimum of two coats is required to assure waterproofing. Allow the DRYLOK® to dry between coats following the label instructions. Important: After the second coat dries, inspect entire wall surface for pinholes in the waterproof coating. Any areas with pinholes should be painted with an additional coat to ensure waterproofing results. All these products are available at your local hardware store and the employees at Phillips Hardware can help you with any home improvement projects.
Waterproofer. The main wall was tinted to Buttercup and the accents were tinted to Mint Green. You can change your space into something more welcoming and waterproof it before the snow melts! Prepare the Surface Clean the surface thoroughly with a wire brush to remove any loose or broken mortar and dirt from the surface. If you see white, powdery deposits (efflorescence) it must be removed. Treat efflorescence by washing with a solution of DRYLOK® Etch (liquid or powdered formula) or muriatic acid according to manufacturer’s directions, rinse and allow to dry. Efflorescence occurs naturally and may recurring but is easy to treat again if needed. Patch Cracks and Holes Fill all holes and cracks with DRYLOK® Fast Plug®. Wet down and back chisel the area, to the shape of an inverted “V” this allows the patch to lock into the surface and cure properly. Fast Plug® sets up rapidly, so only mix enough patch to be used in 3 to 5 minutes. Seal the Floor and Wall Joint When patching, don’t forget the area where the floor and wall meet. Often, when concrete floors cure, they shrink and pull away from the wall, allowing a space for water to enter. Fill this area with DRYLOK® Fast Plug® also and then apply DRYLOK® To

With over 20 years of experience, George W. Rozell III strives to always provide the best in quality and customer service. At the age of 15, he began learning the painting trade during his summer vacations by working with his father. Drawing from his father’s 35 years of painting experience, not only was he taught proper techniques and skills, but also the value of doing the job right the first time. In 1999, at the age of 21, George W. Rozell Painting was established when George decided to go into business for himself. Since that time, hard work, pride, and a strong work ethic have enabled him to grow his business and continue to be successful. His business currently includes t h r e e employees who each combined with George have over 60 years of experience. This small business approach allows him to be present on his job sites and ensure high quality craftsmanship and client satisfaction. Services available throughout the Capital Region include, but are not limited to, interior and exterior painting, new construction, wallpaper removal, deck staining, and power washing. With 85% of their work being residential, most referrals are word of mouth from previous customers.
Local commercial clients include Sunset Bowling Alley, 99 Restaurant, Carpet Warehouse, and various retail stores in Colonie Center. George maintains a close working relationship with local paint stores, which makes it possible for him to remain current on the latest products on the market and offer the best to his customers.

There is no job too big or small for his business, and the same attention to detail will be given to all clients. He sums up his business motto as this, and feels it is the reason for his continued success. “I not only want to do business with you, I want to do business with everyone you know as well.
I want every customer to feel confident referring me to their family and friends because of their satisfaction with my service.”

This group will meet on the second Monday of each month at 1:30 PM at the library. First up: Monday, March 9th Still Missing by Chevy Stevens. Copies are now available for pick up at the library. Still Missing was the winner of the 2011 International Thriller Award for Best First Novel as well as Suspense Magazine’s Best of 2010. Says Author Lisa Gardner: “Still Missing represents psychological suspense at its very best. Realtor Annie O’Sullivan is abducted from an open house and held captive for a year in a remote cabin….Stevens skillfully juxtaposes the back story of Annie’s captivity with the front story of a woman desperately trying to reclaim her old life…. Annie thought she’d survived the worst…but has she?” Upcoming books: The Good Girl by Mary Kubica and Missing You by Harlan Coben. Come join this new group to meet new friends and discuss all the twists and turns in these novels! Noon Author Talk: Hudson River Valley History Vernon Benjamin, former editor of the New Saugerties Times will talk about his new book The History of the Hudson River Valley: From Wilderness to the Civil War on Thursday, March 12th. During the 200 years after Henry Hudson’s 1609 voyage, the Hudson River Valley would become “the landscape that defined America” and “the site of a truly historic flowering of art, literature, architecture, innovation, and revolutionary fervor…. the Hudson River Valley…soon became home to the most vibrant trading outpost for the New World colonies – the Island of Manhattan – even as the rest of the valley retained the native beauty that would inspire artists from James Fenimore Cooper to Thomas Cole. The Hudson Valley also became the major theater for the battle between empires in the French and Indian War. When the colonists united in rebellion against the British several decades later, conflict came to the region once again, with decisive military engagements from Saratoga to West Point to the occupied New York Harbor. In the aftermath, New York emerged as the capital of a new nation, and wealth from the city flowed north to the burgeoning Valley, leading to a renaissance of culture and commerce that is still evident today.” The talk begins at 12:15 PM; bring your lunch if you are on lunch hour. American Cinema and WWII with Lenny Zapala Continues Thursday, March 12th at 6:30 PM: A showing of the 1942 film Casablanca starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. Need we say more? A newsreel and a short from that era will also be shown. Chinese Film/Discussion Series Continues I-Hsin Wu, Adjunct Professor of Sociology at UAlbany is currently hosting a film/discussion series titled “Introducing Chinese Culture Through Chinese Films.” The series will be continuing through June! movie is The Flowers of War on Monday, March 16th at 6:00 PM. The film was nominated for several international awards and is about a Westerner who finds refuge with a group of women in a church during Japan’s rape of Nanking in 1937. He poses as a priest and attempts to lead the women to safety. Upcoming: Monday, April 20th: Farewell My Concubine; Monday, May11th: The Blue Kite; and Monday, June 15th: Yi Yi: A One and a Two. All start at 6:00 PM. Noon Author Talk: I Love Those Earrings Chris Filstrup, coauthor of the new book I Love Those Earrings: A Popular History from Ancient to Modern, will be here for a Noon Author Talk and presentation on Friday, March 27th. From the publisher: “Lavishly illustrated with over 300 images of earrings reaching from ancient Assyrians to Renaissance chandeliers to Victorian ladies wearing birds-in-nests to present day artisans’ use of rare metals, plastics, and even computer chips. Using anecdotes and images, the authors tell a story that will engage those interested in jewelry, fashion history, and design, and the women and men who have fancied and obsessed over earrings in the past and present.” Chris’s talk/presentation begins at 12:15 PM; bring your lunch if you are on lunch hour. Chris has also asked those coming to bring their favorite earrings and stories about their earrings! Local Author Talk: Ram Chugh’s Against All Odds Loudonville resident Ram Chugh will talk about his memoir Against All Odds: How An Indian Airman’s Extraordinary Resolve Altered the Course of His Life on Tuesday night, March 31st at 7:00 PM. From the publisher: “Though his high school science teacher thought sixteen-year-old Ram Chugh, one of his most gifted students, Ram’s concerned but struggling father had other ideas and Ram soon found himself, in 1951, as an armorer in the highly rank-conscious Indian Air Force. Ram soon learned two things: The first was that he was considered the lowest of the low among the enlisted men with little hope for advancement and unbeknownst to him and owning partly to the fact that he knew limited English, the enlistment forms he had signed indicated that he had agreed to serve in the air force for thirty-eight years! ‘If there were a way out of my situation, I couldn’t think of one. It was a done deal. Like a bird in a not-so-gilded cage, I was trapped.’ Against All Odds is the true, inspiring story of a young man’s daunting quest to improve his lot in life and realize his vast, untapped potential despite enormous cultural biases, unbending military protocol, and exceedingly adverse circumstances.” A native of India, Ram Chugh served in the Indian Air Force before joining Panjab University as a research scholar to pursue a doctorate in economics. He later taught economics at Kurukshetra University before moving to the United States in 1966 to earn his Ph.D. As a professor of economics at SUNY Potsdam, he earned the prestigious SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and later received SUNY’s highest honor by being named a Distinguished Service Professor.”
