SUNDAY JANUARY 26TH 2PM • HUDSON RIVER STEAMSHIPS • The Historical Society of the Town of Colonie will present a program based on the book Hudson River Steamboat Catastrophes: Contests and Collisions with author J. Thomas Allison. Beginning in the mid-1800s, steamboats carried people between New York City and the Albany area on the Hudson River. Romantic images lull us into believing it was a quiet means of travel, but a crowded river, faulty equipment and the bravado of the captains resulted in at least one major catastrophe every year. Night boats collided and sank, carelessness caused boiler explosions, races put passengers at risk and fires would quickly swallow the wooden vessels. The grand Empire of Troy suffered many collisions. The Swallow broke in two on a rock, Reindeer’s explosion took forty lives at once and the Oregon and C. Vanderbilt entered into an epic and dangerous race. Collected from eyewitness accounts, these are some of the most exciting and frightening stories of peril aboard steamboats on the Hudson River. The talk will be accompanied by many illustrations/photographs from the book. Mr. Allison organized the Victorian Cultural League in Albany, New York, in 1983 and has just completed two terms as treasurer for the Friends of Schuyler Mansion and is also a member of the Goshen, Connecticut, Poestenkill and Spindle City Historical Societies. TUESDAY FEBRUARY 11TH 12:15PM • NOON AUTHOR TALK WITH ANNU SUBRAMANIAN ON HUMAN TRAFFICKING AND TERRORISM • Local author Annu Subramanian – who was born in Bangalore, India and currently heads the Writing Center at the Brown School in Schenectady – will be at the library on Tuesday February 11th to talk about her latest novel Another Heaven. The novel, writes Annu, focuses “primarily on three factors: human rights abuse, fanatical religious beliefs, and the psychological fraud of terrorism. The novel begins in Pennsylvania, where a young doctoral student of psychology is doing research in order to understand a terrorist’s mind. Her search for counterterrorism efforts takes her to India. In India, she encounters a victim of human trafficking who has been abducted to play a vital role in one of the missions. Consequently, readers discover an organization, orchestrated by a terrorist that is recruiting and training missionaries for mass destruction and the gradual degradation of humanity.” Annu is also a cofounder of the local support group Albany Women Connection. Her first novel, Waiting for the Perfect Dawn, was about the journey made by five

A WARM NEW LOCATION “The new location is beautiful! The Salon is modern, but also very warm and comfortable. All the hair dressers are wonderful, very friendly and experts in their craft. A special thanks to Kathy who always attentively does my hair and listens to me as well!” - Patty Freeman

I started my here career years ago at the age of 16 with Alice's Beauty Salon right here in Cohoes New York. I was still in high school and was happy at that time to be called the "Shampoo Girl"! I continued to work at Hair 2000 where I was lucky enough to go to the 1980 Winter Olympics as a hairdresser to the athletes! I then went on to work for the Glemby Company, then on to Lloyds of Troy where I met Nancy Young. We became great friends and have brought our talent through two other salons. The last one, young Clippers in Green Island is where we met two very talented ladies, Cathy Saccucci and Beth Lazzarro and finally ended up here at Salon Harmony West. We have worked together as a family for over 25 years. The journey has been very exciting and just gets better all the time. With this new move we've added two very talented Estheticians, Victoria Guerin, my daughter, and Katie Monshower. They're very excited to have you stop down here and show you what amazing work they do. In addition to the Estheticians, we also offer extreme eyelash extensions, skin care and massages. We have been in business for over 25 years, formally Young Clippers in Green Island New York. Our clientele includes men, women and children from 1 to 100... Some have been visiting a since they were teens and now bring their families to our salon. I hope you will enjoy the comfort and love for our business you feel when you visit us. A message from Greetings to the citizens and businesses of our local community. Well the last two months have certainly been eye-opening and enlightening for me when it comes to learning about the publishing business. There are so many things to learn and think about, that it sometimes makes your head spin. Catchy advertising copy, interesting articles, local happenings, production costs, distribution channels, customer relations, community engagement‌ You get the idea! I certainly would have not gotten as far as I have if not for the help and guidance from some old and new colleagues in this business. A special thanks to John Guastella from Our Towne Bethlehem, Lowell Knapp from Our Towne Guilderland, Cheryll Hill from Your Hometowne and finally my production and graphics designer Karen Garrison. Their willingness to unselfishly help the "new kid on the block", is greatly appreciated. I feel very fortunate having wonderful mentors like these four people. And now to switch gears‌ Buy local? Why buy local and support independent businesses? I admit, BUY LOCAL can be pretty mind-boggling and there are definitely two camps. Some say buying local is the only way that we can invigorate and support our local communities. Another group, with a conflicting viewpoint, argues the carbon footprint that you leave behind while driving around to make your local purchases is bad for the environment. These are just two of the arguments both for and against buying local.

How about trying a different approach? One that can satisfy the communities desire to support individual businesses, along with the convenience of having a larger variety of merchandise to choose from. THE 10 PERCENT PURCHASE RULE In the day to day hustle and bustle of our lives, buying everything we need only with local independent businesses isn't always practical. There, I said it... it's out there on the table for everyone to see. But then again I've never been one of those people that likes to play the ostrich game, you know, stick your head in the sand and pretend it's not there... But there may be a middle ground. Instead of trying to adhere to a buy 100% local rule for yourself, designate a percentage of your spending for your local small business purchases. The 10% Shift Movement, which started in New England several years ago, suggests households shift 10 percent of their total spending from non-local businesses to local independents. For instance, if you normally spend $300 a week on groceries, set aside $30 of that for shopping at a local bakery, farm stand or familyowned market. If you’re currently ordering 20 hard-copy books a year from Amazon, resolve to buy at least two at an independent bookstore. Lastly, if you're finally getting around to tackle that honey do list, you might just be pleasantly surprised to find everything you need at your local independent hardware store. It could be as simple as looking at your shopping list to find those 10% opportunities. Yours in business growth and networking, Kevin Hotaling, Owner and Publisher, Our Towne Colonie

When looking at the magnificence of the Cohoes Falls one is taken back to a time of grandeur once present in the time of the Iroquois Confederacy . There remains a remnant of their admiration for the Falls in an Indian legend, one of the Hiawatha tales, which is related thusly: "Once long ago before the White Man came, the land of the trees and rivers was free to all Red Men. Life was good, the Great Spirit smiled, peace reigned in the Wilderness of the Savage. The braves hunted, the squaws labored, as was the way.

Iroquois access to their sacred site for the first time in 300 years. Another appreciative visitor was the Reverend Johannes Megapolensis, the first minister of the gospel in Albany, who in 1642, to friends in Holland and his impressions of the marvelous sight. "Through this land runs an excellent river...When we saw not only the river falling with such a noise that we could hardly hear one another, but the water boiling and dashing with such force in still weather, that it was all the time as it were raining...I saw there in clear sunshine when there was

Local Folklore "THE COHOES FALLS"

Once a young maiden, the beautiful daughter of a chief and the pride of the tribe, was working at the river's bank. She tired in the heat of the day and sought the shade of one bark riding at the water's edge. She sat, and quickly fell into a deep sleep from which no motion of the craft would wake her. The canoe slipped from its mooring, was caught quickly by the river's swift current, and glided silently toward the white water at the brink of the Falls. The rapids and the tumbling water's roar woke the slumbering maiden. She screamed to no advantage, attempted unsuccessfully to right the bark's course and finally resigned herself to her fate, death at the Fall's edge. The mists covered her, the Falls claimed her, and no remains were ever found. The Tribe mourned its loss and all Red Men marked this place, for a princess...daughter of a warrior, died there. All called the place Coho, the place of the Falling Canoe." This legend of the Falls, however, does seem to have some basis for verification. In 1655, a famous Dutch explorer, Adriane Vander Donck, in his Description of New Netherlands retells the incident: In the area of the great falls of the Macques Kill (Mohawk River) which the Indians name the Cahoos Falls...An occurrence of this kind took place here in our time. An Indian whom I have known accompanied by his wife and child with sixty beaver skins descended the river in his canoe in the spring when the water runs rapid and the current is strongest... This Indian carelessly approached too near the Falls before he discovered the danger, and notwithstanding his utmost exertions to gain the land, his frail bark with all on board was swept over by the rapid current and down the Falls; his wife and child were killed, his bark shattered to pieces, his cargo of furs damaged. But his life was preserved. The Cohoes Falls is one of the Iroquois most sacred sites due to the Peacemaker's miraculous emergence after his plunge into the Falls. There are many different versions of the word Cah-hoos as it filtered through the many dialects to the Indian language. Joseph Brandt, the leader of the Cherry Valley Massacre, attested that the word was of Iroquois origin and the meaning-a canoe falling. Another evidence of the Iroquois naming the Falls was contained in Morgan's League of the Ho-de-sau-neeor Iroquois which stated "Cohoes Falls: in Mohawk dialect Ga-ha-oose, means ship-wrecked canoe." The Indians, therefore, not only immortalized the Falls through legend but gave them their name. In 2011, the importance of the Cohoes Falls in Iroquois history resulted in Brookfield Renewable Power ceding part of their land holding at the Cohoes Falls to allow the

not a cloud in the sky.. in a great abyss the half of a rainbow...of the same color with rainbow in the sky. " In April of 1660, Jasper Dankers and Peter Sluyter, two Dutchmen seeking areas for prospective colonization also recorded their impressions. "We rode to visit the Cahoos, which is the falls of the great Macquas Kill (Mohawk River) which are the greatest falls not only in new Netherlands, but in North America, and perhaps...in the whole world. As you come near the Falls, you can hear the roaring which makes everything tremble, but on reaching them and looking at them, you see something wonderful, a great manifestation of God's power and sovereignty of his wisdom and glory." Governor Thomas Pownal, an Englishman visiting the area in 1660, described their appearance, also. Greatly impressed by the power which caused air trapped between the rocks to "fly off from this Fall and disperse itself, and fall in heavy showers for nearly half a mile round the place," he made an on-the spot sketch which was finished later in England. In 1804 the great Irish poet, Thomas Moore, wrote to his mother in Ireland: "I was to see the Coho Falls or the Mohawk River and was truly gratified. The immense fall of the river over a natural dam of thirty or forty feet high, its roar among the rocks and the illuminated mist of spray which rises from its foam were to me objects all new, beautiful and impressive... "He was so moved that he chose to immortalize the sight in a 34-line poem entitled "Lines, Written at the Cohoes Falls of the Mohawk River, which opens: From the rise of morn till set of sun I have seen the mighty Mohawk run, Oh! I have thought, and thinking sighed How like to thee, thou restless tide! But urgent as the doom calls Thy water to its destined falls, And the last current cease to run! Oh may my falls be as bright as thine! May heavens forgiving rainbow shine Upon the mist that circles me, As soft as now it hangs over thee! A Special thank you to former Mayor John T. McDonald III for allowing us to reproduce a part of the cohoes.com website.

WHAT’S YOUR VISION OF RETIREMENT? When you start out in your career, you’re probably not thinking much about retirement. At this point, your picture of a “retirement lifestyle” may be,at best, hazy, hidden as it is behind a veil of experiences you’ve yet to encounter. But as you move through the years, your view of retirement comes into clearer and closer focus - and this vision will have a big impact on your savings and investment strategies. Consequently, to create and implement those strategies effectively, you’ll need to define your retirement vision by identifying its various parts. Here are some to consider: TRAVEL - If you’re like many people, you may dream of traveling during your retirement. But what does “travel” mean to you? Do you envision taking a cruise or an international trip every year? Or is your idea of travel just a short jaunt to a popular destination, such as a lake or the mountains or the beach? The difference in costs between global and U.S.-based travel can be enormous, so you’ll need to define your goals and estimate your expenses. SECOND HOME - Once you retire, you’ll have to make some housingrelated decisions. Should you sell your home and “downsize”? Or do you want to keep your current residence and possibly purchase a second home, such as a condominium, in another part of the country? Obviously, you’ll need to factor in these choices when you think about how to invest before you retire and how to manage your withdrawals from your 401(k), IRA and other accounts during your retirement. VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES - You might think that your volunteer activities during retirement won’t affect your finances much. But if you are particularly ambitious, and your volunteerism involves travel, renting space, purchasing equipment and so on, you might be looking at some large cash outlays. Furthermore, if you host people at your house, you may be incurring some types of liability risk, which you might need to address through appropriate insurance coverage. HOBBIES - During your working years, you may pursue your hobbies always with the thought that you can devote a lot more time to them after you retire. However, expanded hobby activities may involve expanded costs. For example, if you’re good with cars, you might decide to invest in that foreign sports car of which you’ve dreamed. Or, if you’re fascinated by genealogy, perhaps you’ll start traveling to places once inhabited by your ancestors. These types of activities can be expensive, so you’ll have to evaluate your saving, spending and investing habits to determine how to accommodate your increased expenditures on your hobbies. SECOND CAREER - Many people look forward to retiring from one career so they can start another - opening a small business, consulting or even taking a part-time job. Clearly, if you were to start your own business, some expenses would be involved, so you’ll have to plan for them. Even if you become a consultant or work part time, you could incur various costs, including travel. And, in relation to these types of work, you may also have insurance and health care issues to address. By identifying the various components of your retirement vision, and estimating their respective costs, you can make those saving, spending and investment choices that can help you work toward your retirement dream. Colonie History In the 19th century, the area was included in the Town of Watervliet. However, in 1895, the residents of the community voted to form a separate town, and parts of Watervliet were split off to create the towns of Colonie and Green Island. Colonie derived its name from a Dutch word meaning settlement outside the city. Colonie was officially incorporated as a village on March 2, 1921. In the 1930s, the village experienced growth and progress following the establishment of a fire company, and construction of an underpass on the Albany-Schenectady Road.

PINTEREST FOR HOME OR BUSINESS Social media has become important in our lives - for many both at home and at work - and Pinterest has become a favorite social media site over the past several months. I feel that Pinterest will continue to become more popular, and profitable among its users. For those who may not know, Pinterest is one of the newest and increasingly popular social media sites around. Pinterest let’s users “pin” pictures and graphics onto “boards” for collecting and sharing with others, in both business and personal situations. I have made extensive use of Pinterest - utilizing its rich layout and graphics - to communicate to business associates, prospects and other followers in a graphics-based environment. The Liberteks page on Pinterest is http://pinterest.com/liberteks/ and I hope you can follow us. We are now learning that Pinterest shoppers go to visit pages at rates comparable to Facebook and Twitter users. Some data indicate that Pinterest users spend more money than Facebook users. Pinterestage and income demographic compare favorably with Facebook users. Check out the comparison at this page I’ve pinned http://pinterest.com/pin/219409813068267553/ So how does this impact your business? Already we have learned, Pinterest shoppers go to visit pages at a rate comparable to Facebook and Twitter shoppers. Also some data indicate that Pinterest users spend more money than Facebook users. Lastly Pinterest age and income demographic compare favorably with Facebook users. Check out the comparison. http:// pinterest.com/pin/219409813068267553/ The bottom line is that Pinterest offers some favorable reason to establish a page to showcase and sell your business. Here are a few ideas I would stress when developing your page: • post both “value added information” and merchandise with care, you don’t need to (nor should you) try to sell with every item. • watermark your pins, with either your logo, your name, or a specific or general URL back to your site. • aggressively market to your friends, followers, colleagues, prospects, etc. to build a fan base to follow the site (Invites through your email contacts are a great place to start). Pinterest can also be helpful for market analysis, I’d encourage everyone to go to the site and see which profiles and pictures are popular. This will give you an idea about the interests and preferences of users and your potential customers. This information will also assist you with the development of your marketing plan. Marketing is key. Speaking of marketing, Facebook and Twitter are now linked with Pinterest, so you can promote your Pinterest Page with these sites. Please contact me with your questions about Pinterest or if you need more information. We can assist you on topics such as: • how to set up a Pinterest page • how to attract fans and followers • how to establish content • how to promote the site on an ongoing basis Please follow Liberteks on Facebook, Pinterest and our other social media sites, and I hope all of your “pinnings” are positive and profitable. LOSE WEIGHT WITH HYPNOSIS Hundreds of pounds are lost and regained every day. Deprivation plans and extreme fitness programs are difficult to maintain and the catastrophic side effects of diet pills are horrifying. You want to look and feel healthy, so what can you do? Consider hypnosis. When you think of hypnosis do you think of someone clucking like a chicken? That's stage hypnosis. It is highly entertaining. In addition to its entertainment value, hypnosis is an effective vehicle for improving your quality of life quickly and often permanently. Hypnosis is used to change behaviors or unwanted habits, balance stress responses, release negative emotions (such as anger, sadness, fear, guilt, etc.), and help create a more positive self-image.

Weight is a symptom, not the problem. If you always acted in your own best interests (ate when you were hungry, drank enough water, and moved your body regularly) you could maintain a healthy weight. The problem is when you eat when you are not hungry, are dehydrated, live a sedentary lifestyle, or assign human characteristics to food (food is your friend, comfort, way of rebelling, etc.). But willpower won't fix this. If willpower worked, everyone would be exactly who they wanted to be. No one fails for a lack of WANTING to be healthier or happier. Successful weight loss programs must focus on resolving the habits or patterns that created the problem in the first place so you can eat healthy foods in the proper amount, drink enough water, and consistently move the body to strengthen and build muscle. With hypnosis, this process can be fun, easy to maintain, and therefore create successful, sustainable weight loss. Sound interesting? It is! So if you want to get off the weight loss “merry-go-round,” consider hypnosis. It can work for you! Shannon K. Keyes, Certified Hypnotist Registered Yoga Instructor

Did you know? On March 2, 1921... the Village of Colonie was incorporated? The first Board of Trustees meeting was held four weeks later at the Colonie Village schoolhouse, March 30, 1921, with the Mayor, Charles H. Collins, presiding over the Board of Trustees. That night the Village government borrowed $500 for the purpose of defraying expenses of the incorporation, created the office of Police Justice, set a tax rate of $3per $1,000 assessed valuation, established the first Village budget at $1,285, and the Village was in business. The Village of Colonie was little more than twin ribbons of buildings on either side of Central Avenue, stretching from the traffic light on Wolf Road to the traffic light on the western side of the Village.

CELEBRATING 400 YEARS OF HISTORY

In January 1614, ten young sailors and a captain named Adriaen Block were stuck on the island of Manhattan as their ship the Tyger burned. Within four months they built the first ship in New York State - The Onrust, Dutch for Restless. During 2006-09 more than 250 volunteers from the Capital District built a replica of this ship to serve as a floating museum and classroom to reach the early Dutch History of New York. This history includes the principles of tolerism and pluralism, the right to petition the court, and much of what it means to be an American today. The Onrust Project currently has a crowd-funding program to raise money to finish the boat so it can begin its educational programming in 2014, the 400th anniversary of the building of the original. If you would like to contribute to this tax-deductible project, go to: http://igg.me/at/onrust/x/281714 Since the project’s inception in 2006 at the Mabee Farm Historic Site in Rotterdam Junction, NY, thousands of visitors, including a great number of school groups, had the opportunity to learn about the unique history of the vessel and its role in the development of New York State. Through presentations and lectures, tours, small and large exhibitions, hands-on workshops, and trade shows such

as the 2008 NY Boat Show at the Jacob Javits Center in NYC, and Woodworkers Showcase in Saratoga, several annual festivals (Waterford Steamboat Festival, Tugboat Roundup, Waterford Canal Fest, Altamont Fairgrounds events) students and the general public have experienced firsthand the specialized ship building methods devised by the Dutch in the 17th century. Their approach enabled them to build ships better, faster and more efficiently than anyone else in Europe at that time. Students from the BOCES Maritime Center, Russell Sage College, Rocking The Boat in the Bronx, the Boy Scouts and US Navy Seabees also took part in working on the construction of the Onrust. Several companies such as General Electric in Schenectady and Momentive in Waterford organized community workdays on the ship and encouraged their work force to join our core group of volunteers. They have joined the more than 250 Onrust volunteers that have truly made the Onrust a community project, symbolizing the Capital District’s spirit of cooperation and volunteerism! Volunteers are still needed. Visit the Onrust web site at www.theonrust.com or stay current on their Facebook Page at facebook.com/groups/133336314301/

TO ADOPT OR NOT TO ADOPT? GOOD QUESTION. We have all seen the ads and messages regarding adopting a dog. What you need to realize is they are up for adoption because their current owner is not able to take care of them. whether is is family illness, job changes, family changes it doesn't really matter. Once you adopt or buy a dog they are yours to care for. Maybe you've heard dog owners say, "Having a dog is like having a child who never grows up." This statement often brings skeptical looks from people who have never shared their lives with a dog, but those who have known only too well how true it is. Like children, dogs are completely dependent on their owners for all their needs -- food, water, medical attention, exercise, shelter and, most important, companionship. But unlike children, dogs will never learn to pour themselves a drink or fix their breakfast. Dogs never learn to look both ways before crossing the street, and they can't stop and ask for directions if they get lost. You can't even send them to the babysitter when you need a night off. People who decide to open their homes to a dog are making a decision to change their daily lives and routines. For many, the years of companionship and unconditional love and devotion they receive from their dog far outweigh the daily responsibilities, but some lifestyles just make it impossible. If you decide that a canine would fit perfectly into your family, there are more things to consider...

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR IN A DOG? Always consider the qualities and personality you want, before size and appearance. For example, a large shepherd-mix might do better than a more energetic terrier in an apartment. Think about your lifestyle and habits and determine which breed is best suited to you. Know everything you want in a dog except what the animal looks like. Very often the pet that has the qualities you are looking for will come in an unexpected package. Don't forget about allergies. Many dogs that are up for adoption are because the owners or someone n the family is allergic to pets. There are several breeds that have hair rather than fur including poodles and terriers. If someone in your home tends to have allergies play it safe and pick a dog that is known for their hypo-allergenic traits.

YOU MAY BE THE PERFECT DOG OWNER IF YOU... Believe caring for a dog for 15 years does not seem like a lifetime. Look forward to big, wet kisses when you come home each day. Like sharing your house with someone who sheds, tracks dirt occasionally and possibly drools. Don't mind sharing your house with someone who will never clean up after him or herself. Want to take care of someone every day. Love a playmate who likes to chase balls and drag off shoes. Don't mind a playmate who likes to slobber on balls and toys. Would like to spend your extra money on pet food, toys, veterinary care, chew bones and more chew bones. Want someone to adore you even on a bad hair day. Believe that spaying and neutering pets will help solve the pet overpopulation problem. Can't imagine leaving your devoted pet behind when you move. Want to keep an ID tag on your pets, so they can always get back to you no matter what. Enjoy unconditional love and constant companionship.
