What’s in Your Closet? The deadline for submitting this column is a few hours away and I haven’t a clue what to write.. The publisher of Our Towne always recommends I put on some fluffy slippers, make myself a cup of coffee, sit in my recliner and just let the words flow. Unfortunately, I don’t have that luxury today as I’m sitting in my shop with numerous customers demanding my attention. People have been coming and going and I’ve started to focus on their requests: “Any real photo postcards of train stations?” “I collect paint sample catalogues, have any?” “Do you have a 19th c. map of Germantown?” “Books on the history of freemasonry?” “Any sterling silver sewing tools?” A fascinating array of collecting interests. It leads me to ponder the age-old question of nature versus nurture. Is it DNA makeup that dictates career paths, obsessions, collections? Or is it all learned? Several times a week for over forty years I have visited people’s homes, viewed their acquisitions and often stared, agog, at the focus and depth of their collecting efforts. There was the room outfitted with floor-to-ceiling shelves set 6” apart, filled with salt and pepper shakers… wooden ones, ceramic ones, silver ones…souvenir, sculptural, figural…thousands of them! Or the house stuffed with taxidermy - not just the ordinary deer trophy, but penguins, ermines, macaws, arctic foxes. Or the house entirely devoted to the image, life and writings of Theodore Roosevelt. Barely a book (and there were thousands) that was not by or about T.R. or a family member, not a spot on a wall that didn’t have related imagery. The coffee mugs, the toothbrush holder, the hand towels, the lamps - all were Theodore Roosevelt. Of course, I’ve been in many rooms devoted to dolls, nutcrackers, breweriana, depression glass, fairy lamps, steins, baseball collectibles, comic book heroes, advertising signs. Rooms of watering cans, ships’ lanterns, mortars and pestles, model trains. Rooms of stoneware, pantry boxes, miniature paintings on ivory, geodes, samplers. Closets and bureaus of stamps, coins, advertising tape measures, medallic art. I am not referring to homes of hoarders; these are thoughtful, organized, driven acquirers of items for which they are passionate. Looking in an antiques trade journal that came in the mail today, I note that a collector just paid a record price for a toothpick holder: $14,850.00. Apparently this was the scarce 5” high version of the Holly Amber pedestal toothpick holder made by the Indiana Tumbler & Goblet Co. (the 2 ½” version is only worth a couple of hundred). Another collector, an animal trap collector, purchased the Holy Grail of traps - the Blake, Lamb & Co. No. 6 bear trap (44” long) - for a modest $44, 850.00. These are not random collectors. A host of very serious people pursue very specific items and are willing to pay very serious prices to fulfill their collecting needs. Is this part of their genetic make-up or did they have a toothpick moment as a child, or a traumatic animal trap experience?

The Small Business Owner working in the business Every local business owner dreams of growing a business large enough to support the hiring and training of employees. Many of us found ourselves working for someone else as an employee and thought, “I’m frustrated working for this corporation, I want to own a business myself.” So we begin the entrepreneurial adventure, searching, finding and finally purchasing, or creating, a small business. We are the only employee in every department. After all, startups are usually under-capitalized... We are the Customer Service Rep, Production Manager, Production Technician, Shipping and Receiving Departments, Maintenance, Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Finance, Investment, Human Resources Manager..... Well maybe not the Human Resources Manager as there is really no one else to complain to.... YOU do it all. Many times your main roll, with the highest percentage of time and effort spent, is one of Production Technician. Someone that creates the product or service for you to sell. Your fortunate, people want your product or service and demand continues to grow. You work longer hours to keep up with the increased demand while still performing all of the necessary work demanded by the several rolls mentioned in the previous paragraph. Business is good but the pressure is mounting! You have been working all this time IN YOUR BUSINESS. You look at the finances of your business and arrive at the decision that you have to hire someone to help in production. This is a BIG decision. Some of the factors in this decision are: • Deciding on payment amount and practices. • Interviewing and hiring the RIGHT person. • Training them to ensure the continuation of your quality product or service. • Putting employee policies in place. • Sharing your vision.

• And about 100 more items..... You found them, hired them and trained them and working side by side is actually working out! You still are working IN YOUR BUSINESS. For you to succeed, really succeed, you need to start working ON YOUR BUSINESS not IN YOUR BUSINESS. The soft stuff that’s really hard. Work on growing in the marketplace so you can hire and train the right employees that you can trust to produce and deliver your product or service correctly. 9 Reasons Why Your Car Won’t Start by Alex Buczynski

It’s a beautiful day outside. The sun is shining and the weather is perfect. You slide into your car, ready to start your busy day, when—uh oh!— your car won’t start. There are many reasons why your car won’t start. Before calling for help, there are things you can check yourself. For starters, make sure the steering wheel isn’t locked.

An empty gas tank is another simple reason why your car won’t start. If you were low on fuel before (or your gauge is broken), it’s possible you’re just on “E.” Car still won’t start? If your car won’t start and it’s not because of the previous two reasons, it could be due to one of the following: Dead battery. A dead battery is the most common reason why a car won’t start. If you have a battery tester, check your battery to see if it’s weak. If you don’t have one, try jumping your car with jumper cables. Battery corrosion. Corrosion on your battery can spell trouble. Check and clean your battery posts to make sure there is a clean, complete connection, then try to start your car again. An auto store employee can direct you to the right products and offer advice on how to clean your battery. Bad starter motor. The starter motor is responsible for physically turning the engine over and getting the engine to fire. If this is the issue, you’ll need a new one installed. Bad timing belt. The timing belt ensures the engine’s valves open and close at the proper interval so that the valves and the pistons never touch. The timing belt is the most important maintenance item in your engine. A

failed timing belt can cause catastrophic engine damage requiring an engine replacement. Auto manufacturers specify when a timing belt should be changed. This is usually based on mileage; generally, the interval is every 60,000 miles or five years (whichever comes first). Broken or cracked distributor cap. The distribution cap routes voltage from the engine’s ignition coil to the spark plugs. If moisture gets under the cap, it can cause problems for your car. Wipe it out with a clean, dry cloth before reinstalling. Be sure to replace a damaged cap. Bad ignition coil. The ignition coil transforms a battery’s voltage into an electric spark. A damaged ignition coil means there’s not enough juice to do that. You’ll need a multimeter (a tool designed to measure electrical current, voltage and resistance) to test the strength of the current running through the coil. Clogged fuel filter. A clogged fuel filter will prevent enough fuel from reaching the engine. A replacement is usually needed if this is the problem. If you can’t fix the problem yourself (or don’t feel comfortable diving under the hood), get in touch with a trustworthy auto mechanic. If your car won’t start, roadside coverage can help. Excerpts from Steve Jobs’ Stanford Commencement Speech My second story is about love and loss. I was lucky — I found what I loved to do early in life. Woz and I started Apple in my parents garage when I was 20. We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a $2 billion company with over 4000 employees. We had just released our finest creation — the Macintosh — a year earlier, and I had just turned 30. And then I got fired. How can you get fired from a company you started? Well, as Apple grew we hired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went well. But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out. When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him. So at 30 I was out. And very publicly out. What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating. I really didn’t know what to do for a few months. I felt that I had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs down - that I had dropped the baton as it was being passed to me. I met with David Packard and Bob Noyce and tried to apologize for screwing up so badly. I was a very public failure, and I even thought about running away from the valley. But something slowly began to dawn on me — I still loved what I did. The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit. I had been rejected, but I was still in love. And so I decided to start over. I didn’t see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life. During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT, another company named Pixar, and fell in love with an amazing woman who would become my wife. Pixar went on to create the worlds first computer animated feature film, Toy Story, and is now the most successful animation studio in the world. In a remarkable turn of events, Apple bought NeXT, I returned to Apple, and the technology we developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apple’s current renaissance. And Laurene and I have a wonderful family together. I’m pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn’t been fired from Apple. It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it. Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith. I’m convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You’ve got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don’t settle. My third story is about death. When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: “If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right.” It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something. Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly i

important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart. About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas. I didn’t even know what a pancreas was. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor’s code for prepare to die. It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought you’d have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months. It means to make sure everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as possible for your family. It means to say your goodbyes. I lived with that diagnosis all day. Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor. I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery. I had the surgery and I’m fine now. This was the closest I’ve been to facing death, and I hope it’s the closest I get for a few more decades. Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept: No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true. Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary. When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The Whole Earth Catalog, which was one of the bibles of my generation. It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch. This was in the late 1960’s, before personal computers and desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, scissors, and polaroid cameras. It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions. Stewart and his team put out several issues of The Whole Earth Catalog, and then when it had run its course, they put out a final issue. It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age. On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous. Beneath it were the words: “Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.” It was their farewell message as they signed off. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. And I have always wished that for myself. And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. Thank you all very much.

The Friendship Circle is a not for profit organization, born from innovation, where two compelling community needs and two target populations were creatively addressed through one synergistic program design.

Celebrating 25 years, STRIDE Adaptive Sports is a volunteer non-profit organization providing adaptive sport and recreation lessons annually to children & individuals with special needs. STRIDE has over 200 skilled volunteer sport instructors, serving over 1000 families and offers free programs in sixteen different sports and 25 locations. With focus on education in individual life-time sports and funding directly supports programs. STRIDE is an affiliate member of Disabled Sports USA, Professional Ski Instructors of America and the American Association of Snowboard Instructors; an official Red Cross Provider; New York Special Olympics, and US Paralympics Sport Club. STRIDE is recognized as one of the leading adaptive sport programs in the Northeastern United States.

The Friendship Circle

The Friendship Circle is dedicated to creating an inclusive and supportive community for special needs children, teen volunteers and their families. They envision a world in which people who have special needs and their families experience acceptance, inclusion and friendship as contributing members of society. The Fix It Right Club meets once a month in FebMay where Phillips Hardware provides the children of the Circle exciting hands-on building projects. We will have the kids make tool boxes, bird feeders, bug barns and bird house with instructions by a Phillips Hardware employees.

In 1988, a group of dedicated individuals came together with a common goal in mind; to develop an organization that would provide recreational and educational juvenile crime prevention programs to the youth of Albany, New York.

United Way of the Greater Capital Region is committed to meeting essential needs, promoting financial stability, and strengthening individuals and families. More than half of Capital Region residents believe social conditions have worsened for most people over the last year, according to a Siena Research Institute poll conducted in partnership with United Way of the Greater Capital Region.

This group of individuals included uniformed members of the Albany Police Department, City of Albany Administrators, local and state business leaders, local and state education leaders, clergy, concerned state representatives, community leaders, and local youth service agency members. This group particularly focused upon programming that would target Albany’s inner-city youth in grades five through eight. PAL membership is open to all youth in this age group, regardless of gender, race, or socio-economic background. Children from any Albany school, private, parochial, or public, are offered participation in PAL programs and events. Events by the Albany Police Athletic League, are the annual Freihofer’s Community Walk. The Community Walk with APAL begins and ends outside the New York State Museum— a 1.86-mile loop that begins on Madison Avenue and proceeds around the Empire State Plaza and Lincoln Park.

The good news is: 89 percent of respondents agree the community needs everyone’s help and many recognize the potential to make a personal contribution toward the common good. We have donated items to help them do lawn and garden clean up and gave them special pricing on other items. We hope our small contribution helps improve lives in our community.

I am proud to say that today our Town has stable finances and one of the region’s lowest tax rates. At the same time, we’ve continued our full support for essential services such as public safety and supportive programs for seniors and youth. Every day, our population more than doubles as people travel to Colonie to work and do business. Maintaining the infrastructure that invites this daily influx is an enormous undertaking, and we are hard at work to be sure Colonie is well prepared for the future. This year, we began a second paving plan aimed at keeping our 320 miles of Town roads in good working order. We are also making significant infrastructure investments in our drinking water and sanitary sewer systems. Upgrades to these aging systems are necessary to ensure our quality of life both for today and tomorrow. Speaking of drinking water, I can honestly say that we have the best tasting drinking water in New York State, having won the New York Section of the American Water Works Association’s “Best Tasting Water Contest” in April. Planning for your Pet I do believe in love at first sight... Look into the eyes of a puppy or kitten or an animal in need that you want to help....instant love. With limited time stimulation for your pets, especially dogs, it is the unfortunate reason why many pets get surrendered to shelters. In the 27 years I’ve been in the pet industry, I believe the biggest oversight in planning for the commitment and responsibility in the life of your pet is estate planning. Defined as the progression of life or, if something unforeseen were to happen to you and you could no longer care for your pet. We all want to believe our family members or

friends would take care of our pets and love them like our own, however, there’s a cost in taking care of your pet and if someone isn’t financially ready for this, they would need a means to do so. Unfortunately the unthinkable happens many times where families are forced to bring a pet to the shelter due to not being prepared for these costs. My animal sanctuary was founded on many of these principles wanting to help clients that hadn’t prepared and families that couldn’t take care of them in the passing of the pets beloved caretaker. I’m not suggesting of leaving your entire estate to your pet because they’ve given you unconditional love and you want to believe they will live forever... I’m talking about the regular maintenance and care of your pet. They depend 100% on you and you’ve given them a promise to believe they will be safe, loved and cared for all of their life. On the belief that they may live 15 years and the average cost for a pet is $1000 a year depending on your pet and it’s needs.... When looking at the magnificence of the Cohoes Falls one is taken back to a time of grandeur once present in the time of the Iroquois Confederacy . There remains a remnant of their admiration for the Falls in an Indian legend, one of the Hiawatha tales, which is related thusly: "Once long ago before the White Man came, the land of the trees and rivers was free to all Red Men. Life was good, the Great Spirit smiled, peace reigned in the Wilderness of the Savage. The braves hunted, the squaws labored, as was the way.

Another appreciative visitor was the Reverend Johannes Megapolensis, the first minister of the gospel in Albany, who in 1642, to friends in Holland and his impressions of the marvelous sight. "Through this land runs an excellent river...When we saw not only the river falling with such a noise that we could hardly hear one another, but the water boiling and dashing with such force in still weather, that it was all the time as it were raining...I saw there in clear sunshine when there was

Once a young maiden, the beautiful daughter of a chief and the pride of the tribe, was working at the river's bank. She tired in the heat of the day and sought the shade of one bark riding at the water's edge. She sat, and quickly fell into a deep sleep from which no motion of the craft would wake her. The canoe slipped from its mooring, was caught quickly by the river's swift current, and glided silently toward the white water at the brink of the Falls. The rapids and the tumbling water's roar woke the slumbering maiden. She screamed to no advantage, attempted unsuccessfully to right the bark's course and finally resigned herself to her fate, death at the Fall's edge. The mists covered her, the Falls claimed her, and no remains were ever found. The Tribe mourned its loss and all Red Men marked this place, for a princess...daughter of a warrior, died there. All called the place Coho, the place of the Falling Canoe." This legend of the Falls, however, does seem to have some basis for verification. In 1655, a famous Dutch explorer, Adriane Vander Donck, in his Description of New Netherlands retells the incident: In the area of the great falls of the Macques Kill (Mohawk River) which the Indians name the Cahoos Falls...An occurrence of this kind took place here in our time. An Indian whom I have known accompanied by his wife and child with sixty beaver skins descended the river in his canoe in the spring when the water runs rapid and the current is strongest... This Indian carelessly approached too near the Falls before he discovered the danger, and notwithstanding his utmost exertions to gain the land, his frail bark with all on board was swept over by the rapid current and down the Falls; his wife and child were killed, his bark shattered to pieces, his cargo of furs damaged. But his life was preserved. The Cohoes Falls is one of the Iroquois most sacred sites due to the Peacemaker's miraculous emergence after his plunge into the Falls. There are many different versions of the word Cah-hoos as it filtered through the many dialects to the Indian language. Joseph Brandt, the leader of the Cherry Valley Massacre, attested that the word was of Iroquois origin and the meaning-a canoe falling. Another evidence of the Iroquois naming the Falls was contained in Morgan's League of the Ho-de-sau-neeor Iroquois which stated "Cohoes Falls: in Mohawk dialect Ga-ha-oose, means ship-wrecked canoe." The Indians, therefore, not only immortalized the Falls through legend but gave them their name. In 2011, the importance of the Cohoes Falls in Iroquois history resulted in Brookfield Renewable Power ceding part of their land holding at the Cohoes Falls to allow the

In 1804 the great Irish poet, Thomas Moore, wrote to his mother in Ireland: "I was to see the Coho Falls or the Mohawk River and was truly gratified. The immense fall of the river over a natural dam of thirty or forty feet high, its roar among the rocks and the illuminated mist of spray which rises from its foam were to me objects all new, beautiful and impressive... "He was so moved that he chose to immortalize the sight in a 34-line poem entitled "Lines, Written at the Cohoes Falls of the Mohawk River, which opens: From the rise of morn till set of sun I have seen the mighty Mohawk run, Oh! I have thought, and thinking sighed How like to thee, thou restless tide! But urgent as the doom calls Thy water to its destined falls, And the last current cease to run! Chinese Film/Discussion Series I-Hsin Wu,Adjunct Professor of Sociology at Ualbany, is currently hosting a film/discussion series titled “Introducing Chinese Culture Through Chinese Films.” The series began last November and concludes on Monday June 15th with the multi-award winning Taiwanese/Japanese film Yi Yi: A One and A Two – written and directed by Edward Yang, about the emotional struggles of a businessman and the lives of his middle-class Taiwanese family in Taipei seen through three generations and from three different perspectives: the middle-aged father, the young son, and the teenage daughter. One person who took that route will be here to talk about her journey: local author Lue Cleveland retired from her work in the education field and pursued her lifelong dream of writing a book. and has always loved and enjoyed writing. Her first book is the recently-published mystery novel Perception. She is presently working on her second novel (currently untitled), which will be a sequel to Perception. Book Review: H Is For Hawk Our monthly noon book review is moving to the evening this month for a review of the surprise best seller of 2015 – a book that combines falconry and grief: H Is For Hawk by Helen Macdonald. The review will be on Wednesday, June 24, at 6:30 PM. About the book from the NY Times: “The premise of her memoir is simple: Macdonald loses her bearings after her beloved father’s sudden death. She retreats from the human world. She’s a poet, historian and longtime falconer, and for complicated reasons, she seizes upon a strange yet sublime prescription for what ails her: She will raise and train a young goshawk, a cur of a bird to some, notoriously difficult to tame. Bigger, ‘bulkier, bloodier, deadlier, scarier,’ she says, than other hawks they are sometimes confused with.” The book “is good about death, about parents, about depression, about solitude and about keeping small cute, dead animals in your freezer to toss to your hawk. But it is especially good about class and gender.” Our reviewer will be Richele Ford, and she writes: “I have been a falconer for 15 years and have flown red-tailed hawks, harris hawks, and a kestrel. I also have an Education Permit from both NYS and the federal government. This allows me to give Birds of Prey educational programs. For those programs I work with a great horn owl, a barred owl, a barn owl, and a screech owl along with any birds that I have on my falconry license. I give programs at many locations in the capital area and at many State Parks throughout the year. I live with my husband of 30 years who is also a falconer. I have two adult sons who have, over the years, helped out with our birds.” Death With Dignity in NYS: How Can You Make a Difference? In April, over 80 people attended a panel Discussion on Death With Dignity in New York State here. Death with Dignity-Albany, the sponsors of that discussion, will be having a follow up on Tuesday, June 30, starting at 12:15 PM. Half of the states in our country are currently considering “death with dignity” bills.
