five massive tomes.

Theodore Roosevelt wrote 38 books and an estimated 150,000 letters. Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s letters, to just his chief ministers, have been compiled into

I suspect that if most people under the age of forty or fifty gathered their letters together, to anyone and everyone (including letters to the editor, letters home from camp, etc.) they might fill one very slim volume. Of course there might be an occasional postcard home from a backpacking trip in Peru or, and this is rather iffy, a handful of handwritten thank you notes for gifts received. Generally, though, putting pen to paper is as alien as dialing a telephone or winding your watch. During the first quarter of 2014 the United States Postal Service reported a 354 million dollar net loss from the same period the year prior. One of the significant contributing factors was a shift to electronic communication. As texting and emailing become the norm, we need to reflect on the historical ramifications. Letters shape history. We do have newspapers to chronicle events (though they too are being supplanted by digital delivery), but the private take on passing events and emotional responses adds color and texture to our analysis of history. Biographers and historians have always relied heavily on combing through personal correspondence and eyewitness accounts. It gets even more frightening when we take into account the latest trend of dealing with our current mode of correspondence. In Arkansas emails in the State Treasurer’s office are required to be deleted after thirty days. Last month Governor Cuomo expanded a policy across all state agencies that automatically deletes emails after ninety days. And let us not forget former First Lady and U.S. Secretary of State Clinton’s deletion of 31,830 emails that she and her staff deemed private and personal. I find myself, and my profession, heading towards extinction. My business thrives on preserving correspondence, both from “the man on the street” and the “famous”. I’ve owned a letter from a minister in Chicago dated October 12, 1871 with firsthand knowledge that Mrs. O’Leary and her cow were not responsible for the great Chicago fire (which began a few days earlier). I recently sold an anonymous 1949 letter (Brooklyn, NY) warning their neighbor that they will break glass in their driveway if they continue to contemplate selling their home to an African American family. And on the other end of the spectrum I just sold a letter from Orville Wright relating the history of him and his brother’s moves from bicycle shop to bicycle shop and where exactly they began construction of their first airplane. For centuries personal and official correspondence has helped to define our history. How will we analyze the past in the future? How will we get the human perspective on passing events if the chroniclers of daily life, i.e., our

Why all This hubbub about shopping small and local....

Every local business owner has dreams about establishing a thriving, growing business that does its best to create raving fans from their customer base. Unfortunately it doesn’t aways end as planned and many end up closing their doors...... Here are some statistics compiled from various government agencies: • The SBA defines a small business as an enterprise having fewer than 500 employees • There are almost 28 million small businesses in the US and over 22 million are self- employed with no additional payroll or employees (these are called nonemployers) • Over 50% of the working population (120 million individuals) works in a small business • Small businesses have generated over 78% of the net new jobs since 2010

facts, how many tax breaks and incentives do you recall hearing about in support of small business employment growth? Probably very few. It’s always about what can we do to entice the BIG employers to come here to generate jobs. I say we can all be a part of a movement to support small business growth by purchasing local. It’s up to us, the consumer, to create the jobs through the use of our spending power. And what a force that is! Why share all of this information with you? It’s simple. If you want to help small business, and in turn help our country, shop local when you can. Make it a personal quest. Can all of us do it all the time? No. Can we shop local and support small businesses more than we are now? You betcha. What’s that metaphor for completing a large task...”How do you eat a elephant? One bite at a time” I suppose you could eat the elephant a lot faster if you had some friends to help you right? So how do you help to keep small businesses viable in our community? By you and your friends making it personal, one small purchase at a time. Kevin Hotaling Owner and Publisher, Our Towne Colonie

When You shop small

Source Chuck Vollmer, Jobenomics Founder & Author

I know the federal government considers a small business one with less than 500 employees but I would argue we should be using less than 50 employees as the cut off. As seen from the above chart, over the last 5 years small businesses of less that 50 people created 39.4% of the jobs in the country while the companies with 500 employees plus only created 22%.

• Approximately 543,000 new businesses get started each month (but more employer businesses shut down than start up each month) • 7 out of 10 new employer firms survive at least 2 years, half at least 5 years, a third at least 10 years and a quarter stay in business 15 years or more If I had to sum up these six facts I would say small business is the backbone of our economy and the main stimulus of job creation. Given these

at independent, locally owned businesses of what you spend stays right in your community supporting local organizations and services

Cyclists: Insure Your Ride

If you’re a two-wheel traveler, don’t give bike thieves an easy ride. Lock it up and be sure you’re properly insured.

Cities and suburbs are hot spots for theft, but universities and college towns rank high on the list too. Experts estimate that it takes only 7 seconds to steal a locked bicycle. More than 217,200 bicycles were reported stolen in the U.S. in 2011, the latest available figures from the Federal Bureau of Investigation. A good bicycle can cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars for a basic model to several thousand dollars for a racing bike. It’s an investment you’ll want to make sure is insured appropriately. Insurance Coverage for Your Bike Bicycles are covered under the personal property section of standard homeowners and renters insurance policies. This coverage will provide reimbursement, minus the deductible, if a bike is stolen, or damaged in a fire or other peril for which coverage is provided under the policy. Homeowners and renters insurance policies also provide liability protection. If you injure someone in a bicycle accident and he or she sues you, you will be covered up to the limits of your policy. Most people have $100,000 to $300,000 worth of liability protection as part of their standard policy, but higher amounts of coverage are available. Your homeowners or renters insurance policy also includes no-fault medical coverage in the event you injure someone. Keeping Your Bike Secure Of course, the best protection of all is to keep your bike safe. To help avoid theft, safety experts recommend the following tips: Always lock up your bike, even if it is in your garage, an apartment stairwell or a college dormitory. If you’re outside, lock it up in a visible, well-lit area. Lock your bicycle to a fixed, immovable object like a parking meter or permanent bike rack. Be careful not to lock it to items that can be cut easily, broken or removed. Consider using a U-lock. For proper locking technique, position the bike frame

5

and wheels so that they take up as much of the open space within the U-portion of the lock as possible. The tighter the lock-up, the harder it is for a thief to use tools to attack the lock. Always position a U-lock so that the keyway is facing down toward the ground. Do not position the lock close to the ground as this makes it easier for a thief to break it. Don’t lock up your bicycle in the same location all the time. A thief may notice the pattern and target you. Consider registering your bike with the National Bike Registry. Registering the bike may also increase the likelihood of you getting a bike back if it’s stolen. Filing a Bike Claim Before you have to file a claim, the Insurance Information Institute suggests that you: Save your receipts – When you buy your bicycle you’ll probably purchase expensive equipment to go with it. Be sure to save all your receipts. The cost of a helmet, patch kits, pumps, extra inner tubes and other essentials can add up quickly. If your bike is damaged or stolen, having receipts can help speed the claims process. Add your bicycle to your home inventory – Everyone should have an up-to-date home inventory. This can help you purchase the proper amount of insurance and will make the claims filing process easier if there is a loss. Take a photo of your bicycle and document any serial numbers – If your bike is stolen, proof of ownership will be important. To help ensure your bicycle is insured properly, contact the Lyden Group to review the coverage and discuss bicycle theft risks and how they can be avoided.

How to Get Rid of Ants, Wasps, Spiders and Other Insects Spring Survival Tips Spring has finally sprung, our customers are gearing up for a season of outdoor fun. Whether you’re barbequing or simply relaxing on your patio, nothing crashes a party like an onslaught of insects. However, following these tips, you can get rid of ants, spiders and other pests safely and easily, indoors and out. Arm Yourself Against Ants “There are two basic ways to deal with ants,” says Stew Clark, Director of Research at TERRO®, an industry leader in DIY pest control products. “The first and often only step needed to control ants is to bait the ants with liquid ant baits. Indoors, lace liquid ant bait close to areas where ants have been observed. The liquid baits are made with a natural, sweet tasting liquid that attracts ants quickly. While the active ingredient in the bait will ultimately kill the worker ant by interfering with the ant’s digestive system, it works slowly enough that the worker has time to get back and unsuspectingly share the lethal bait with the rest of the colony. Since most indoor infestations are linked to a colony located underground outside the house, you should also bait ants outside with an outdoor liquid ant bait. When searching for ants outside, look for “ant highways” or foraging trails. These trails are simply a line of marching ants that leads from their home to yours. Often, these trails are most active during the morning or evening. Place insect bait near ant trails or where ants are numerous. After baiting, if the ants are still coming, you might need to move to a contact killer to help eliminate the ants. Look for sprays, dusts or granules that kill ants instantly and deliver long-lasting residual repellency. Wipe out Wasps & Hornets Wasps and hornets begin to emerge from hibernation in the springtime. Their painful stings are dreaded by many, but there are easy and effective ways to kill these unwanted pests. Wherever insects are noticed, stand a safe distance from the nest and use a foaming wasp & hornet killer spray until the surface is moist. As the foam expands, it will completely cover the nest. The insects will fall to the ground and die. Try to spray early in the morning or late at night when they are less active and are in the nest. To prevent wasps from entering your home you should spray around areas where they can enter, including gaps around

outdoor plumbing and vents, cracks or crevices in foundations and along sills and ledges. Conquer Creepy Crawlers Spotting a spider sends many people running. However, these creepy crawlers can easily be eliminated with contact killers, like an aerosol and ready-to-use spray. Spiders are often found in woodpiles, heaps of dead leaves or anywhere debris builds up. Moist areas such as basements and garages are also prime areas that these pests gravitate towards. Removing debris around and in your home and keeping damp areas as dry as possible will lessen the possibility these pests entering a home. “Even the best efforts to keep spiders at bay often fail,” says Clark. “The best line of defense is to have a contact killer on hand and to periodically treat the area by spraying in cracks and crevices.” Phillips Hardware carries all the Terro products you will need this summer to stay pest free. TERRO® is the industry leader in ant control and has been a trusted brand in pest control products for more than 90 years. Based in Lititz, PA , the company offers proven ant and pest control products including liquid ant baits, aerosol sprays, perimeter granules and ant dust products.

Pet Dental month has just passed however all year long we should be advocating for the oral hygiene of our pets due to all the other diseases that can be directly related to tooth and gum decay. There are many supplements to aid in this care along with cleanings you Vet can provide.

A visit to your Pet Groomer is just as much for medicinal aspects as well as cosmetic. Regular grooming will insure your pet to have healthy skin and coat....along with maintaining nail care, ear and in some cases, oral care. Pet Walkers or Doggie Daycare facilities are a great friend for your pup to have, when you are busy or at work, a pet walker or playtime can provide the extra time needed for your Pet’s exercise! Mental and physical stimulation are an absolute must in keeping your pets focused on being the greatest companion known to man. The absolute #1 way we can honor our pets is to give them what we all strive for and they give so freely...... Unconditional love. Profit in business comes from repeat customers, customers that boast about your project or service, and that bring friends with them. W. Edwards Deming “We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow men; and among those fibers, as sympathetic threads, our actions run as causes, and they come back to us as effects.” Herman Melville

Those who wish to sing always find a song. Swedish Proverb Insuring What Ruins Your Day Won’t Ruin Your Life You’re a safe and conscientious driver who follows the rules of the road. One average day, you are driving on the Northway, doing the speed limit, and keeping proper spacing between your car and the car in front of you. You reach for your coffee to take a sip and the top pops off, spilling hot liquid onto your lap. Your instinctive reaction is to turn your head away as you place the cup back in its holder and brush the hot coffee from your clothing. Unfortunately, just as your coffee spills, the vehicle in front of you brakes sharply. By the time your eyes are back on the road, you can’t avoid the accident and smash into the braking car. The next thing you remember is being taken to the hospital by ambulance, in shock, and not quite comprehending what had just happened. The car you hit slammed into another vehicle. The two drivers of the other vehicles are also injured and taken to the hospital. All three vehicles involved in the crash are totaled. Most likely, you will be deemed at fault for the accident and be held responsible for the injuries to the other two drivers, along with the damage to their vehicles, not to mention your own injury and damage to your vehicle. This is where your auto insurance comes into play. Are you properly covered? Your “bodily injury liability” coverage pertains to the injuries of the other two drivers. In New York State, the minimum requirement is $25,000 per person/ $50,000 per accident, not much protection if a severe injury occurred. Typical liability options are 25/50, 50/100, 100/300, and 250/500. Those that choose 250/500 ($250,000 per person, $500,000 per accident), also have the option to

add “Umbrella” liability protection at 1 million dollars and higher. This added liability protection covers your auto policy as well as your homeowner or renters insurance policy. Your own injury will be covered by your policy’s “Personal Injury Protection” (PIP) coverage. In New York State, the minimum requirement is $50,000 up to $150,000 with an added $25,000 allowed if you opt for Optional Basic Economic Loss (OBEL) coverage. PIP will cover the medical expenses of all injured parties in your vehicle up to the limit of your coverage amount. It is primary to your own health insurance. Your “property damage” coverage pertains to the damage caused to the other two vehicles. The minimum requirement in New York State is $10,000, again, not a lot of protection for severe damage to a vehicle or vehicles. Common property damage options are 10, 25, 50, 100, and 250 thousand dollars. Your policy’s “collision” coverage would be applied to the damage to your own vehicle, less your deductible amount. Accidents happen, and lack of proper insurance coverage can absolutely turn a bad day into a bad financial life. I would love to speak with anyone looking to assess their current insurance coverage, options, and ways to save money while being properly protected. Be safe! Lanthier’s Grove

Corner of Rt9 & Dunsbach Ferry Rd Latham, NY 12110 (518) 785-0515

Bob Belleard, the current owner of Lanthier’s Grove in Latham, has been a part of the business for over 48 years. Lanthier’s is the oldest grove in New York State. Located 1¼ Miles above the Latham traffic circle on the corner of Rt9 and Dunsbach Ferry Road, it is a convenient location from anywhere in the Capital Region, The original working farm was already a popular picnic location when Omer “Babe” Lanthier opened the Grove in 1942.

Plenty of Room For Large Parties

Bob Belleard, the current owner, worked for “Babe”and Jack Lanthier before buying the grove 27 years ago. Bob’s 48 years attending to the Grove are similarly matched by many of his long time staff members, many of who have been there for 30 years or more themselves. Bob considers the grove the best bargain for your Clam bake, Lobster bake and picnic outings in the region. “Where else can you go for only $25 a person while saving money on gas, not to mention your valuable time. Lanthier’s Grove serves picnics from 12:00pm to 8:30pm with the main dinner usually served about 4 : 3 0 p m . Included on the all you can eat picnic menu are Hot dogs, Meat Sauce, Sauerkraut, Salt Potatoes, Baked Beans, Clam Chowder, Corn on the Cob, Pulled Pork, Potato and Pasta Salads, Italian

Sausage, Spare Ribs, Chicken Wings with Raw Clams served for 3 hours. To help make sure it goes down OK, all Beer, NA Beer & Soda are included with your ticket price. To help work off some of that abundance of food if you so choose, Lanthier’s Grove also provides equipment for Softball, Volleyball, Bocci Ball, Horseshoes, Cornhole Game, Basketball, Bingo, a Game Room and Pool Table. Bob can also arrange for entertainment to be provided for your outing that can include live music, a DJ and inflatable bounce houses and dunk tanks. Feel like being a Karaoke Star? Bob can make it happen for you. Lanthier’s Grove has in recent years introduced their famous “Take Out Dinners”. Any day of the week, call in ahead of time during the day, and on the way home stop by the Grove and pick up a great “Chicken or Lobster Bake Dinner” with clams included for everyone. Why settle for the same old, same old thing when you can surprise your family with a different type of take home meal. Plan your next business or family event with Lanthier’s Grove and give yourself a reminder of some of those “Good Olde Days”.

American Cinema and World War II Film Series Concludes Our year-long America Cinema and WW II film series concludes with four films hosted by Lenny Zapala – film expert and Director of the Menands Public Library. Our first eight films have been very well-received – as were Lenny’s introductions, comments, and newsreels and shorts from the 1940s! For the final four, we will be switching to Tuesday nights (starting time for all four will be 6:30 PM): May 5th: Hangman Also Die – directed by German ex-patriot Fritz Lang with a screenplay by another ex-patriot (and Communist) Bertolt Brecht. Lenny will be talking about resistance in the Nazi occupied countries and those who fled Hitler and came to the USA. June 9th: Miracle of Morgan’s Creek – satire written and directed by Preston Sturges with Lenny commenting on “the war at home.” July 7th: The Story of G.I. Joe – directed by William Wellman and based on the writings of Ernie Pyle and the Italian campaign. August 11th: The Best Years of Our Lives – the William Wyler classic on “the boys come home.” As with all the films in the series, Lenny will be showing a newsreel and a short film from that era. Chinese Film/Discussion Series I-Hsin Wu, Adjunct Professor of Sociology at UAlbany and a member of the NYS Office for the Aging’s Targeting Workgoup working with the Chinese- American community, is currently hosting a film/discussion series titled “Introducing Chinese Culture Through Chinese Films.” The series began last November and will be continuing through June! This month’s movie is The Blue Kite on Monday, May 11, at 6:00 PM. The Blue Kite “is a 1993 drama film…banned by the Chinese government upon its completion (along with a ten-year ban on filmmaking imposed on [the director])….The Blue Kite serves as one of the quintessential examples of China’s Fifth Generation filmmaking, and in particular reveals the impact the various political movements, including the Anti-Rightist Movement and the Cultural Revolution, had upon directors who grew up in the 1950s and 1960s. The film won the Grand Prix at the Tokyo International Film Festival, and Best Film at the Hawaii International Film Festival, both in 1993.” Up next: Monday, June 15: Yi Yi: A One and a Two. Everyone Can Be A Dynamic Speaker: Yes, I Mean You! On Monday, May 18, starting at 6:30 PM, Mark Grimm will present an entertaining, thought-provoking program that will leave attendees with a new approach to public speaking. This revelation will allow them to feel more at ease, make their presentations much clearer and more relevant to audiences, and provide an easy-to-follow path to becoming dynamic. Learn why most speakers prepare the wrong way for presentations. Hear why Mark once hid in the men’s room when it was his turn to speak. He shares his personal path from nervous presenter to paid speaker, a path anyone can follow. Don’t miss an inspirational event that could change

your life! Former TV news anchor Mark Grimm is a public speaking coach, media trainer and message strategist. He has made hundreds of presentations and appears often as a communication or political analyst for local ABC, NBC, CBS, and Fox affiliates. Mark conducted one-on-one interviews with Presidents Bush and Clinton and hosts the Siena Alumni Connection interview program on FM 88.3 The Saint. He has been an adjunct media professor for over 10 years. Mark will read brief excerpts from his book, Everyone Can Be A Dynamic Speaker: Yes, I Mean You!, that will highlight key points. But don’t expect an evening of being read to. The session will be engaging, interactive and provide a few laughs. Mark’s website: http://markgrimm.com Albany Area Senior Orchestra Concert On Tuesday May 19th at 2:00 PM: Come enjoy a performance by the Albany Area Senior Orchestra, a group of mature musicians who enjoy taking their music to others, especially those who have few other opportunities to hear live music. Typical selections include music by world famous composers Borodin, Dvorak, Handel and Rossini as well as medleys of folk songs, movie and show tunes, plus a march or two! There is a continuing need for new members, especially people who play string instruments. Book Nook At The Crossings Opens Friends of the Library News: Summer is coming and with it comes the opening of the Friends of the Library Book Nook at the Crossings. We will be there every Saturday during the Farmer’s Market from May 16th to September 12th, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Do stop and visit. Remember, all hardcover books are $1, paperbacks are $.50, and children’s books are also $.50. If you would like to help, consider volunteering for even an hour to sell books, and if you have donations of books, please do bring them by. We are always in need of gently used children’s books. All proceeds from Friends events are used to help the library obtain equipment, furniture and material it might not otherwise be able to afford. We hope to see you at all our events, and remember the Friends meet the second Tuesday of the month at 6:30 PM in the Youth Services Activity Room. All are welcome!
