Welcome to the Western Downs

T

he Western Downs is one of Australia’s largest primary producers and continues to demonstrate its ability to produce high-quality product for national and international markets. Agriculture is one of our region’s core economic drivers and we are known for our wide variety of produce including high-grade beef, pork, lamb, watermelon, cotton, sorghum, chickpeas, mung beans, wheat, and barley. Our agriculture sector is underpinned by our region’s strong sense of community and passion for top-grade produce. We are proud of our rich agricultural heritage and this continues to shine through all we do here on the Western Downs - with our region continuing to experience strong economic growth across multiple industries.

TASTE Western Downs magazine has been produced with the help of local Western Downs photographer, Ange Stirling. www.angestirlingphotography.com Additional photography has been provided by Western Downs Regional Council.

Our abundant local produce also offers a chance for residents and visitors to step outdoors and explore our great region, and I encourage you to take a look around and experience the wonder of the region we call home. For now, here is a taste of what the Western Downs has to offer.

Enjoy! Paul McVeigh Mayor, Western Downs Regional Council TASTE WESTERN DOWNS

ABOUT THE WESTERN DOWNS

About the Western Downs T

he Western Downs is a diverse region known for many attributes. Those keen for a journey will love the sprawling country in every direction, with a spirit that shines through a region that continues to thrive. The Western Downs is driven by agriculture, which is a founding pillar of their economy and continues to hold its place with a longstanding reputation for being resilient, sustainable, and modern. It is no coincidence the industry is thriving, given the fact the Western Downs holds some of Queensland’s most productive and resource rich soils to support broad acre farming and livestock production. In fact, more than

50% of the agricultural land in the region is classified as strategic cropping land. Beyond crops, the Western Downs is home to almost one-quarter of Queensland’s beef producing properties. However, the real treat within this region is the unique mixture of local pubs, restaurants, and hidden cafes that each encapsulate the authenticity that this region has to offer. The Western Downs have a strong culture for supporting local and are welcoming to all who would like to experience a taste of their region. We invite you to explore what this vast region has to offer and enjoy a taste of the Western Downs.

Their beef comes from local farmers in Bell’s surrounds, and the butcher’s owners raise their own lambs. Condiments such as mayonnaise are made from local pasteurised eggs, and relishes and jams for the café menu are made in the café’s very own kitchen. The café also sells a specialty range of preserves, like spiced fig and ginger jam, which is produced using fruit directly from

a farm at the foot of the Bunya Mountains, and the grapes used in their grape jam are home-grown by one of the cafes owners. Pips are known for their famous tomato relish, with the ripe tomatoes used having been handpicked for the café. The café has wonderful staff who are keen gardeners and keep up great supply of fresh herbs from their very own gardens, as well as some being grown at the café itself. Locals are also happy to supply their own fresh produce for the café to use, and with real country charm, it is not unusual to find a basket of lemons, cucumbers, pumpkins, or peaches on the café doorstep! andowae is a small rural town surrounded by rich alluvial soil and some of Queensland’s richest and most productive agricultural land. Wheat, barley, sorghum, oats, millet, sunflower, safflower, and linseed crops are all grown in this area. Dairy and beef cattle studs are also in the district. Did you know the Western Downs is home to the longest structure in the world? Erected in 1948 to protect local sheep flocks, the original Dingo Barrier Fence stretched for more than 5,600 kilometres and has its northern end near Jandowae. Stop by to see the replica fence and grab a snap with the two-metre-high dingo statue, created by Scottish artist Andy Scott. A visit to the town is not complete without a stop at Athlone Cottage. Situated on the banks of the Jandowae Creek, this original slab hut once had an ant bed dirt floor.

he township of Condamine is located south of Miles on the meandering Condamine River. Surrounding Condamine are many feedlots and a freshwater fish farm, as well as arguably the region’s top camping location, Caliguel Lagoon. You are in the heart of cattle country here and Condamine is famous for the invention of the Condamine or Bullfrog Bell. Designed to be hung from the necks of working bullocks, the bells ensured the stockmen were able to locate their

cattle when left to roam and graze. Stockmen were even able to determine the distance of a bullock by the sound of its bell. Visitors can learn more of this history when they stop to read the inscription on the side of the large replica bell in Bell Park. Catching a “Cod on the Condamine” is also a popular activity for visitors and locals alike, followed by a coldie at the Condamine Hotel where you can talk about the one that got away!
