LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Welcome to the April / May issue of Out & About. Nothing says Easter like fluffy chicks and no one does fluffy chicks like Hen Corner, celebrating ten years of the Good Life in May. A mad idea to keep chickens in the back garden in Brentford turned into a business that ten years on offers courses in making bread, cheese, jam and other delicacies. Hen hugging available on Saturday 15th April. P6 If you fancy a taster rather than a course – pun intended – the Salopian garden in Isleworth is a community resource where schools can teach children about growing food. Or you can go along and explore what it has to offer as an individual or as a family. For £10 an adult and two children can learn how to pot up plants for summer and make your own elderflower cordial on 31st May. P18 The Brentford Challenge invites you to take part in a day of family sports fun at Syon Park and Brentford Lock. Fitness workouts, ‘high tempo soccer’ on an inflatable football pitch and paddle boarding are among the activities on offer on Saturday 9th April. P5 Known worldwide for the excellence of their teaching in musical theatre, the Arts Educational Schools are a magnet for would-be stars of stage and screen, but head of parttime learning Jonathan Goodwin would like you to know that the ArtsEd’s doors are open to you too. If you fancy joining a community choir or their new drama group, step this way… or should I say shimmy? P15
There are moves afoot to build a new bridge over the Thames. The footbridge, which would connect Ferry Quays in Brentford to Brentford Gate at Kew Gardens, has been designed by Chiswick-based architects, Acanthus. P16 Fifty years ago another group of civic-minded types were discussing how they could improve their neighbourhood. Bedford Park was a rundown area, targeted for demolition. The residents decided to put up a fight, the Bedford Park Society was formed and the Bedford Park Festival was born. P29 The houses in Bedford Park represent some of the best examples of Victorian architecture but if you want to see the best preserved Arts & Crafts interior decoration in Britain, look no further than Emery Walker’s House, reopening in Hammersmith after extensive refurbishment on 20th April. P8 So whatever your taste, get out and get doing!

His awardwinning plays include Outside Edge and Stepping Out. TV credits include A Touch of Frost, Shoestring and The Avengers. • Jazz at George IV, 7.30 pm, Thursday 27 April - The Oriana Curls Trio. Vintage vocals evoking the back streets of Montmartre together with a touch of the American speakeasy from this multi-talented French singer and violinist whose impressive four-octave range of a voice soars effortlessly through Jazz, Latin, Blues & Gallic chanson material.

TEN YEARS OF THE GOOD LIFE It’s ten years since Sara Ward and her partner Andy started keeping chickens in their suburban garden We have got a very special celebration coming up here at Hen Corner. At the end of May we will be marking our ten-year anniversary of keeping chickens here in our London garden. Initially, as a family we wanted to live more sustainably, choosing organic food and growing some of our own fruit and vegetables. As we discovered more about intensive farming and food miles I challenged myself to grow a whole meal from the garden that had no chemicals on it, no plastic bags to transport it and no worker getting paid an unfair wage as they produced it. I managed to grow some pretty good tomatoes, magnificent courgettes, a few bulbs of garlic and a couple of pots of herbs which gave us the basics for a meal, but you may have noticed a significant component missing – the protein.
down the road to the house on the corner and decided to upgrade to a bigger chicken house and introduce some beautiful purebreed hens. Becoming a business
Since then our flock has continued to grow. I can’t believe that we are now celebrating ten years of keeping chickens, they make truly lovable pets and the fresh eggs taste amazing. If you’d like to explore chicken keeping for yourself, our next courses are: Urban Hens - Keeping Chickens in London - Wed 24th May, 6.30pm and Family Feathers & Fun - Wed 31st May, 2-4pm. Adults £45. Easter activities Saturday 15th April.

Cows and pigs not an option
I considered steak and sausages, but as we had no space for a pig, a cow was certainly out of the question. We then found these trendy plastic chicken coops, by a company called Omlet, in a design magazine and realised that keeping hens in the garden would give us daily eggs without the need to slaughter an animal to feed us. It started as a bit of a joke, but then the first two hens arrived with a shiny new Eglu coop and fox-resistant run as a surprise birthday present from my husband Andy. The next hens to add to the flock were a couple of chicks that our children had brought home from a school project on hatching eggs. Around this time we moved

WALKER’S HOUSE REOPENS Lucinda MacPherson reveals a hidden gem in Hammersmith
Reopening on April 20th, after an 18-month closure for repairs, is Emery Walker’s House, a riverside house museum, a short hop over the Chiswick/Hammersmith border. Behind the Georgian façade at 7 Hammersmith Terrace lies a secret. Inside are the best preserved Arts & Crafts interiors in Britain.
From 1903 to 1933 it was the home of Sir Emery Walker, an eminent Victorian typographer, printer and photographer and key member of the Arts & Crafts Movement. He was a close friend of William Morris who lived nearby and the two men met every day for the last six years of Morris’ life. Both Walker and Morris had an eclectic mix of belongings in their homes, which is why this interior is believed to be the most authentic Arts & Crafts home in Britain. Original Morris & Co textiles and hand-blocked wallpapers act as highly decorative backdrops to furniture designed by Philip Webb mingled with 17th and 18th-century English pieces. Cotswold hand painted bowls are placed alongside Chinese and Moroccan ceramics on tables which stand on layers of Morris and Middle-Eastern rugs, which is exactly how Arts & Crafts protagonists would have adorned their homes. Other highlights include a pencil portrait of May Morris by Sir Edward Burne-Jones, William Morris’ friend and collaborator since student days. May was a close friend of the

Visitors are struck by the eccentric homeliness of the interior, and the intimacy of the tours which are limited to just eight visitors due to the size and fragile nature of the house and its many contents. A LITTLE DROP OF STARDUST FOR EVERYONE Jonathan Goodwin, Head of Part-Time Learning at ArtsEd, rolls out the welcome mat to local residents Arts Educational Schools London (ArtsEd) is one of the UK’s leading drama schools, offering outstanding conservatoire training on three-year BA Hons courses in Acting or Musical Theatre. In January 2016, ArtsEd was named School of the Year by industry newspaper The Stage and in November 2015 was graded outstanding by Ofsted. But the ArtsEd is not just for aspiring professional performers. Just three minutes’ walk from Turnham Green tube, the building is home to the three hundred pupils of the independent Day School and Sixth Form, and since 2013 the newly refurbished Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation Theatre has been used not only for student productions, but to host events for the Bedford Park Society and the Chiswick Book Festival.
ArtsEd Easter courses 2016 Community choir
In September last year ArtsEd launched a Show Choir for adults, meeting on Monday nights from 7.30pm – 9.00pm, which is open to all and sings songs from the shows in a fun and supportive environment. Building on the success of the choir, a community drama group is set to open in late April, exploring the plays of Alan Ayckbourn and Alan Bennett. "We've loved building connections with the local community over the past few years”, says Principal Jane Harrison. "It's so important to us to continue to be a strong part of our community, offering opportunities for our Chiswick neighbours to benefit from our fantastic facilities and brilliant staff.” If you’re a theatre enthusiast and would like to join in, please visit the website www.artsed.co.uk or contact me, Jonathan Goodwin, Head of Part-Time Learning on 020 8987 6692.

Every weekend and holiday, ArtsEd’s School Of Part-Time Learning delivers a wide range of courses and classes, giving 4- to 16-year-olds the opportunity to develop new skills right across the performing arts, including singing, dancing, comedy improvisation and acting for stage and screen. These are open to any child, not just those at the school and parents tell us what a confidence boost their children experience by taking part in our classes – coming up with creative ideas, performing in front of their classmates and making new friends. IF JULIUS CAESAR COULD DO IT, SO CAN WE A group in Brentford are putting forward a proposal for a footbridge between Brentford and Kew. David Farmery explains why Do you live in Brentford and want to get to Kew Gardens to look at the Hive, take the kids to the playgrounds, visit the Palm House, or take in a concert? Or perhaps you’d like to cycle or walk to Richmond on the towpath, or to Chiswick Bridge and Barnes without going all the way round Kew Bridge. If you reside in Kew or Mortlake wouldn’t it be nice to be able to cycle or walk to work at the offices, shops and universities on the Great West Road or visit Brentford FC, without having to dodge the traffic on the overcrowded South Circular?
Community Interest Company with proper governance, a business case and cost benefit analysis to culminate in obtaining funding to build, run and maintain our new Bridge. This is all ongoing at this very moment. The Mayor of London is installing new Cycling Superhighways and Quietways, one of which runs through Brentford and out to Twickenham and beyond, all for the purpose of getting people out of their cars, taking more exercise, helping us to keep fit and taking the strain off public transport and the NHS. Wouldn't it be great if you could divert over the Thames, taking in a drink or meal overlooking the boats in the harbour in Ferry Quays? We will get there in the end, and people will just wonder why it wasn't constructed years ago. Apparently Brentford is where Julius Caesar led his Roman legions across the Thames in 54BC, so maybe ‘Caesar’s Bridge’ would be an appropriate name.
If you'd like to know more, contact info@brentfordgate.co.uk
Well soon you might be able to do all these things. A meeting of the Brentford Community Council last year was asked how it would spend £9m if it came available. Chris Richards of Acanthus Architects suggested a pedestrian bridge over the Thames from Ferry Quays to the car park outside the Brentford Gate at Kew Gardens. A team was formed, almost overnight, of volunteers from the worlds of planning, architecture, engineering and business to begin the tasks needed to build the bridge: building websites, making videos, talking to the relevant local authorities, Historic England, Kew Gardens, the Port of London Authority, the Highways Authority, crowdfunding sites, local businesses and chambers of commerce etc etc. All before forming a

The HARE & HOUNDS A country pub in the ‘burbs
Sunday lunch, good steak, decent beer, nice peaceful green surroundings, safe play area for the kids. Sounds like a country pub. Tastes like a country pub. But actually you don’t have to drive an hour to get there and get stuck in weekend returning traffic on the way back… It’s what editors of glossy travel mags like to call a ‘hidden gem’. The Hare & Hounds pub in Osterley is a country pub transported to the middle of the London suburbs. Opposite the beautifully landscaped gardens of the National Trust’s Osterley Park, it’s tucked away from the noise and fumes of London, just three mini roundabouts away from Gillette Corner on the Great West Rd. So near and yet so far. Perfect for a family occasion.
L@outandabout_mag
The pub’s friendly host Chris Bosse offers a premium grill and Fullers beer and a large beer garden with an outside barbecue at weekends, where now that summer’s on its way you can keep one eye on the kids in the play area while savouring a pint. You can also try one of their gin infusions specially for the summer. He is proud of the way his staff look after customers. Refurbished a year ago, the Hare & Hounds is celebrating the May Bank holiday weekend with a three-day music festival on 27th, 28th & 29th May. In celebration of multicultural unity within the local community, the Hare & Hounds invites you to park the cares of the world outside and enjoy World music, live bands, international food

DISGUISED AS PIZZA
Karen Liebreich invites you to come to the Salopian Garden to learn about plants and pizza
Cultivate London has been training young people in horticulture in Hounslow and Ealing since 2010. Many local people are familiar with its high quality herbs, flowers and salads from local Farmers’ Markets. Now Cultivate London’s newest site, the lovely Salopian Garden on the London Road in Isleworth, leased from the National Trust, offers new opportunities. Over the past year
apprentices and volunteers have created a tranquil, productive and beautiful oasis, with a wood-fired cob oven, bee hives, a welcoming polytunnel learning space, heritage fruit orchard, green roofed spaces, organic vegetable, herb and flower gardens and accessible raised beds. This new community hub opens its doors to the public for weekly volunteering sessions, as well as for monthly free workshops and special events. Plants and produce will be sold at the gate – it couldn’t be fresher. Every third Thursday of the month there is a free gardening Q&A. Just drop by. Check out the website to sign up for events and workshops: www.cultivatelondon.org/events-workshops/ The Salopian Garden is the perfect place to teach young people and the community about food growing and the environment. The Royal Horticultural Society is providing teacher training courses, and local schools are beginning to discover the site. Please get in touch if you think your school would be interested. FAMILY FIRM TOP HAT CELEBRATES 50 YEARS Bridget Osborne meets Mike Moran, owner of Top Hat Who knew that dry cleaning could be so interesting? Celebrity customers, ground breaking gizmos, threats from mobsters and a seat in the front row of social change are some of the warp and weft of life in the fabric cleaning industry which have seen Mike and Pat Moran and their son Mike through the last 50 years. Mike senior came over from Limerick at the end of the war, started work at a dry cleaners in Isleworth and by the age of 19 was managing the shop. Pat, an Isleworth girl, learned admin skills in the offices of Gillette in Brentford. They married in 1962 and five years later bought their first shop, by the bus garage in Kingsley Rd, Isleworth. They pooled their knowledge to build up the successful business which Mike junior took over in 1984. Mike remembers ‘helping out’ putting trousers on hangers from the age of five. When they moved to Chiswick in 1968, to premises opposite Turnham Green, thugs came in asking for protection money. Local folklore has it that the Kray twins’ victims prop up the flyover wearing concrete suits, but Mike senior, one of eight brothers, refused to be intimidated. Mike junior also recalls John Thaw and Sheila Hancock and comedian / magician Tommy Cooper coming in and chatting to his mum. (How do you iron one of Tommy
Cooper’s shirts? Just like that!) At the time they couldn’t get a bank loan, but incredibly, bank manager Alec Hodges lent them the money personally to buy the shop. When Mike left school, his 18-year-old heart did not leap at the prospect of a career in cleaning. He had the hotel business in mind when he started his course at Kingston Poly as it was then, but over-indulgence in beer and rugby resulted in his return home somewhat earlier than planned, where gradually he got involved in the business and eventually he took over running it. “The cleaning business isn’t very sexy”, he says, but it’s as good a way of making a living as any, with “reasonable rewards” (he wouldn’t say how much) and an opportunity to spend the day chatting to people, which is Mike’s favourite occupation. He moved the business to Devonshire Rd in 2007 and is proud of Top Hat’s customer care: they do 800 shirts a week, alterations, repairs and laundry as well as dry cleaning. They have a marvellous machine which enables customers to collect their items 24/7 and staff who have stayed with the firm for many years and offer the benefit of that experience. Top Hat remains a family affair, with Mike’s cousin running the recently opened Hammersmith branch. They have featured in The Apprentice on BBC One and last year they won the industry award for Best Independent Dry Cleaner in the country. They will be offering cake to customers who pop in on Saturday 27th May, their anniversary weekend, with a bigger celebration to follow in September at the Devonshire Rd street party. 20 Devonshire Road Chiswick W4 2HD 020 995 9813 289 King Street Hamersmith W6 9NH 020 8741 2581

THE BATTLE OF BEDFORD PARK Torin Douglas celebrates 50 years since a beautiful area of Chiswick was saved from the demolition ball It was one of the great heritage campaigns of the 20th Century. No fewer than 356 Chiswick houses were granted Grade II listing to save them from demolition. 50 years on, we’ll be celebrating the achievement at this year’s Bedford Park Festival. In the summer of 1967, the beautiful
Arts & Crafts houses of Bedford Park - the world’s first garden suburb - were under threat. In those days, believe it or not, it was a rundown area and, in the swinging Sixties, Victorian architecture was out of fashion. The local council had started knocking down some of the houses and replacing them with ugly blocks of flats. In 1963, two public-spirited local residents decided enough was enough. After the council demolished a large house in Bedford Road and replaced it with a five-storey old people’s home, they set up the Bedford Park Society with the aim of getting local buildings listed for preservation. The co-founders were Harry Taylor, president of South Acton Conservatives, and Tom Greeves, an architect and founder member of the Victorian Society, who enlisted the poet and preservationist John Betjeman as patron. Within a year, the Bedford Park Society had attracted over 200 members and delayed the destruction of at least one fine house. A TV film was produced, with commentary by Betjeman. But

the campaigners’ arguments were rebuffed by the listing committee of the Ministry of Housing. The architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner wrote to Tom Greeves: “Alas, I lost the battle over Bedford Park”. By 1967, two more houses had been destroyed but the campaign went on, as Greeves’ wife Eleanor recalled in the book Forty Years On – The Bedford Park Society 1963-2003: “The breakthrough came in 1967 with the first Bedford Park Festival, a brainchild of the recently-appointed vicar, Canon Jack Jenner, to raise funds for repairs to St Michael & All Angels church”. In the Vicarage, they put on an exhibition, Artists and Architecture of Bedford Park 1875-1900. John Betjeman visited it, as did the Ministry of Housing inspector Arthur Grogan – an expert on the Arts & Crafts period. A month later, no fewer than 356 of the houses were granted provisional listing. Soon both Ealing and Hounslow councils had declared conservation areas, preserving the first garden suburb as one of the most sought-after places to live in west London. The Exhibition That Saved Bedford Park will form part of this year’s Bedford Park Festival, from June 9th to 25th 2017. For programme and updates see

MEMBER NEWS Brentford’s Musical Museum featured on Bargain Hunt The Musical Museum near Kew Bridge has featured on the hugely popular TV show Bargain Hunt. During the programme, which is shown on BBC One and seen by millions of viewers, the Blue and Red teams spend an hour at an antiques fair with a budget of £300, looking for bargains to sell at auction for a healthy profit. Museum Chairman Michael Ryder was asked to provide his expert advice. Michael spoke to programme presenter Natasha Raskin Sharp about three distinctive musical instruments, specially selected from the museum’s world-renowned collection of self-playing instruments for this particular episode, which are all examples of the early development of automatic musical instruments. The Nicole Frère cylinder musical box, the earliest, is a very early example (c.1870) of a cylinder music box driven by a key wound clockwork motor. Made of pear wood, it belonged to a lady from Wembley who had owned it since childhood but “as a girl” she had never been allowed to wind it up. It plays four tunes, which still sound exactly as they would have done when first purchased nearly 150 years ago. ‘In the days when we went out’ was the one played on the show.
first model to use perforated paper. Paper music rolls were much easier and cheaper to produce, so with the introduction of the Celestina, ownership of musical boxes became more widespread and the popular tunes of the day started to be mass produced. Viewers saw how the Celestina was operated, by turning a handle which moves the roll and works the bellows, drawing air across a reed. Michael Ryder, Chairman of The Musical Museum hopes that the show, which was filmed last autumn and shown in February, will encourage people to come to the museum: "The Musical Museum has often been featured on television, but the thrill of being interviewed in front of the camera never lessens. I hope this programme gives audiences, both local and national, a small taste of the treasure trove of many more (and bigger) magical musical instruments awaiting their discovery at The Musical Museum itself. " Open Tuesdays and Friday to Sunday, 11am to 5pm. Some on-site parking. Nearest station: Kew Bridge (5 minutes’ walk)

The Britannia musical box represents the development of metal discs. Made in Switzerland and sold in the UK through music shops, the advantage of this sort of musical box was that it was not a one-off purchase. It created a market for the metal discs. The museum has acquired a selection of ten discs, of which the producers chose ‘Goodbye Dolly Grey’ for filming. The Celestina paper roll reed organ was the last of the chosen three. teach them the importance of bonding together as a family." OMNI GENEius™ are innovators, coming up with ideas for family board games, strategy board games and toys, working both in London and Hong Kong. “We focus on encouraging ‘IQ’ advancements through creative play, with the aim of helping younger generations advance and become more inventive, intelligent and productive." They say playing board games stimulates curiosity. It introduces children to the discipline of following rules, develops patience and encourages children to think proactively, as they are trained to anticipate the moves of the other players. Playing board games also helps children deal with failure – to see setbacks as stepping stones to success rather than disasters. “When you play board games with your kids, you get an opportunity to teach them that it is alright to lose in life sometimes. Kids will learn not to repeat their mistakes. These games will teach your kids to lose gracefully."
