EDITOR’S TIPS

WELCOME

Redlees Charity Fun Day

The first of what plans to be an annual event is being organised at Redlees Park in Isleworth on 29th August in an attempt to bring all communities, faith groups and charities together to outreach to the local public and fundraise for their own causes. There will be children’s amusements, Radio West Middlesex, BBQ, cash bar, performance arena for all local groups that wish to perform on the day and many other activities. The event is being promoted by the Lions International Whitton and Feltham branch. If you would like to join the event by performing in the arena or having a pitch, contact TW7events@outlook.com or lionalfredsand@aol.com as soon as possible

“August rain: the best of the summer gone, and the new fall not yet born. The odd uneven time.” Sylvia Plath, The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath There has been a lot of rain so far. Summer has intermittently showed its full glory here and there and sometimes when we least expected it. An uneven time, unpredictable but the downpours have certainly helped our green spaces here, in west London. But it’s not over yet; we are still in summer’s embrace and beckoning more sunshine for those days out picnicking, camping, visiting local book festivals, such as Write on Kew or Chiswick book festival, or simply lounging around reading the latest copy of out&about. As ever, we aim to bring some great local business to your attention as well as local projects, news about food markets and even some drumming to inspire and indulge your creative channels. A fascinating Local History section reminds us once again, the merits and wonders of west London and what an amazing place it is in which to live. So before the days get shorter, and the light fades into autumnal coolness, make sure you get out&about and enjoy what the community has to offer.

Write on Kew

Kew Gardens’ Literary Festival

After a highly successful inaugural year, Kew Gardens is delighted to announce that Write on Kew returns this autumn with politician and author Alan Johnson, children’s author Michael Rosen, and novelists Rose Tremain and Alexander McCall Smith, who lead the way in what is shaping up to be another exciting programme of events. From Thursday 22nd until Saturday 25th September 2016, the Gardens will play host to world famous authors and writers from several genres including fiction, nature, history, science, and children, for a series of scintillating talks and events in stunning surroundings. Write on Kew is open to writers and readers of all subjects and ages, and many of the talks will take place in Kew’s listed buildings, including the beautiful Nash Conservatory, and Museum Number 1, which faces the iconic Palm House. Richard Deverell, Director of Kew Gardens says, “Kew is so much more than just a botanic garden, it is a hub of contemporary, creative thinking, at the fore-front of both the science and arts worlds. I am thrilled that this festival is fast becoming an absolute must on the literary circuit.”

Happy reading!

LOCAL BUSINESS

UrbanFood FORTNIGHT

Sara Ward shares some of her favourite food producers with the opening of Urban Food Fortnight “I am proud that Cultivate London has played a role in London’s burgeoning urban farming scene, and I wish for us to continue to develop alongside other urban farming initiatives in this fantastic city. I want us to help make the movement bigger by engaging and training the next generation of urban farmers, and by getting Londoners really excited about local, sustainable food.” Adrienne Attorp, General Manager Cultivate London As the seasons continue to unfold throughout the year, we take time now to celebrate the harvest and shine a spotlight on London’s great food producers during Urban Food Fortnight (9th - 25th Sept). Locally, we have some brilliant businesses bringing fantastic food that we can enjoy knowing that the people behind the products are pouring their passion into all they produce. With the united aim of helping us eat fresh, local food without additives and chemicals, they are equipping us to prepare healthy meals from the best ingredients. Here are just a few of my favourites... Bang Curry, Chiswick bangcurry.com

Bang Curry provides an easy and natural alternative to readymade curry sauces. Their range of authentic Bangladeshi spice kits create delicious and healthy curries in a ‘sure to succeed’ three step recipe using back-to-basics scratch cooking. We all want to eat healthily, but sometimes there just isn’t enough time and that’s where Bang Curry fills the gap. “Our aspiration is that Londoners will no longer reach for ready-made curry sauces, instead they will opt to make a Bang Curry as anything less simply will not do!” Shelly Nuruzzaman, Founder of Bang Curry Cultivate London, Isleworth cultivatelondon.org

Cultivate London is an urban farm and social enterprise with a primary aim of providing work experience, training and employment for disadvantaged young people. They also work to convert derelict land into productive food growing space, and to engage Londoners in learning about their food and where it comes from.

Toyin’s Kitchen, Chiswick toyinskitchen.co.uk

Toyin’s Kitchen brings us a base cooking sauce called Obe-ata that is 100% natural and free from additives, preservatives, salt, sugar and fat. Started by Beverley Ajayi, a busy mother who understands the time constraints most of us face, her number one aim is to provide a transparent healthy alternative and to provide a cooking sauce that is fresh, fast and easy to use. “My dreams for the future is that Obe-Ata sauces become a staple cooking sauce throughout the country. I would love to have a cooking school where I can run affordable classes where new parents and inquisitive cooks can learn how versatile, great tasting and easy it is to cook with Obe-ata, building flavours to their own individual palette using our sauces.” Beverley Ajayi, Founder of Toyin’s Kitchen Finally, if you’d like to have a go at preserving some of our local harvest, we have a couple of courses coming up at Hen Corner, Brentford, and don’t forget our weekly Micro Bakery every Friday. DRUM FOR IT Tom Morley makes drumming for everyone My band Scritti Politti used to get people shouting “Make one up!” at our gigs around London in the late 70s. We had this policy of starting with a song everyone knew, then make one up. Then play another song they knew, then make one up. We must have been mad. We took it in turns, starting a song off then the other two of us had to find a way to join in. A fast guitar riff from Green, a reggae bass line from Niall or maybe a jungle beat from me. We had no idea what was coming next. Risky. But good. It demonstrated our commitment to the DIY music ethic that was popular then. Live onstage. It also showed if you’re authentically connected you can achieve great things. We had this uncanny ability to “listen” for the ending and stop at the same time, which caused much laughter, on and off stage. Some improvised songs were chaotic and some were magnificent, but all were applauded equally. I realise now we weren’t being judged on musical merit, it was more about courage and rebel style. Thirty-five years later I’m doing the same thing, whether it’s at a MeetUp drum group in our kitchen in Isleworth (www.meetup.com/drumcirclelondon) or onstage at a corporate event in the Berlin Hilton. Except now EVERYONE is in the group, they all get a drum, whether it’s three people or 300. How is that the same? I have this policy of rushing through the rudiments and teaching people an African rhythm fast, in the first 15 minutes. We then play around with it until the whole group is comfortable with the groove. Next, I make sure we can all count to eight. From there we play the rhythm we now “know” for eight beats, followed by eight beats of complete freedom, with the stipulation that you have to return to the home groove. People love it. Freedom within a structure, which is exactly what Scritti were doing “back in the day.” So how come “the suits” are now doing this in business conferences around the world? We all spent nine months in our mother’s womb listening to her heartbeat – it’s no

10

accident that when we ask for one word to sum up a session at the end people often say, “home.” We’ve run innovative teambuilding music events in Chicago, Shanghai, Moscow, Paris, New York and London and there are very few cultural differences when it comes to drumming. “But I haven’t got a rhythmic bone in my body!” Yes, we hear this all the time. A group would rather talk to us for an hour about why it won’t work, rather than try something new. But what are modern businesses crying out for? People with the ability to be imaginative when it comes to new challenges; People who can respond to a new stimulus with excitement rather than fear; People who come alive when they hear the words, “Make One Up!”

Yoga Therapy FOR BACK PAIN Bene Spoelders puts us in position

Serious back pain can be debilitating. It can take away your carefree attitude and replace it with the fear that this will be your life from now on: unable to join in with your favourite activities, feeling withdrawn and irritable. However, a yoga programme to support and guide recovery is essential not only in getting back on track with your life, but also offers a way to learn about your body.

on the individual. Back pain is complicated: not only are there many different kinds of back pain that require different sets of exercises, but every individual comes with more than just the back condition. There may be similarities, but every body is still different. This is what I love about my work, trying to find the combination of yoga tools that will help a particular individual on a particular day.

Through yoga therapy sessions, clients learn more about their back condition, what they can do on a daily basis to feel stronger, more flexible and learn how to prevent a relapse. My students also start to feel more relaxed and at ease in their body thanks to the combination of movements, breathing and relaxation techniques that is so unique to yoga. It allows them to feel empowered and know how to manage their back health.

For people with serious back pain, I start with a five-week programme that includes stretching and strengthening exercises, relaxation techniques and breathing exercises. I give homework and advise on alignment, posture, pain management and how to keep the back safe in daily activities. After the initial five weeks, my students usually keep coming on a weekly basis to continue the healing process. People also come for prevention: I teach business professionals who want to prevent back troubles and stress-related diseases due to their sedentary lifestyle and demanding job. Some of my other students are sports enthusiasts and want to focus on stretching so they can keep doing triathlons or other sporting events without feeling limited by a tight or painful back.

As a yoga therapist, I teach private sessions so that I can focus

When I first started teaching yoga after two years of training, I was already drawn to working with smaller groups and a more gentle form of yoga. I quickly realised all my students had some kind of health issue. We all do. I knew yoga was good for several health conditions, from cancer to diabetes to high blood pressure and back pain. My greatest joy is to see how yoga can make people feel more at ease in their body, calmer and happier.

LOCAL EVENT

CHISWICK BOOK FESTIVAL Torin Douglas prepares for yet another literary feast As we prepare for the Chiswick Book Festival each year, one of the many enjoyable tasks is choosing the faces to put on the cover of the Festival leaflet. At the very first Festival in 2009, we showed pictures of Lady Antonia Fraser, Anthony Horowitz and Dame Jacqueline Wilson. The next year we made space for four – Sir Terry Pratchett, Michael Wood, Sir Andrew Motion and Allison Pearson. In 2011, we chose Michael Morpurgo, Kate Mosse, Daisy Goodwin and Vanessa Redgrave. In 2012, we put six authors on the cover: Michael Palin, Cressida Cowell, AN Wilson, Clare Balding, Jeremy Vine and Antony Beevor. The next year it was eight and for the last two years, we’ve squeezed in nine pictures, including Max Hastings, AN Wilson, Mary Portas, John Torode, Vince Cable, Bryony Gordon, Simon Mayo, Helen Lederer and Toby Young. For this year’s Festival in September, we’re trying something new, a mix of authors and book covers, since some titles are more easily recognised than their writers. Take the ‘Ladybird Books for Grown-Ups’ by Jason Hazely and Joel Morris. These hilarious pastiches have stormed the bestseller charts in the past year, regularly occupying half a dozen places in the Sunday Times top 10 hardbacks. The same is true of The Girl on The Train, the best-selling crime novel by Paula Hawkins, which has just been filmed starring Emily Blunt. The film is released in October and Paula Hawkins will talk about the process of turning the book into a film with SJ Watson, whose own crime novel Before I Go To Sleep became a hit film last year.

& Fiction. A.N Wilson is Victoria’s biographer and Daisy Goodwin has written the major new ITV drama series about the young Queen Victoria starring Jenna Coleman. Children’s favourites Jacqueline Wilson and Cressida Cowell also return this year, while first-time novelist and former Blue Peter presenter Janet Ellis will make her first appearance. She was made an MBE in the summer for her work with charities such as Doorstep Library, one of three reading charities supported by the Festival. TV comedy performers Shappi Khorsandi, Andy Hamilton and Mark Watson are coming to Chiswick this year, as are the veteran wine writer Hugh Johnson (interviewed by Jancis Robinson), spy writer Charles Cumming, novelist Victoria Hislop, MasterChef 2014 champion Ping Coombes and many more. Set up in 2003 by Louise Kaye and Sara Turnbull, the Opera lectures have grown from an average audience of 15 to more than 85 each week. Conducted by Ross Alley, who is a hugely experienced lecturer on opera having given almost 100 talks at the Royal Opera House, including preperformance talks, insight evenings and study days. He has also given pre-performance talks at the English National Opera and in all the major concert halls. For many years he was a lecturer in music for the University of London (Birkbeck College) and has also given numerous lectures to the Wagner Society, NADFAS, London Jewish Cultural Centre and Kenwood House. We’re spoiled for choice and so are our Festival audience! The Chiswick Book Festival takes place from 15th to 19th September 2016, based at St Michael & All Angels, Bedford Park, close to Turnham Green tube station. Read full programme and buy tickets at...

www.chiswickbookfestival.net

Another book cover we’ll be featuring, marking the battle’s centenary, is Somme: Into the Breach by Hugh SebagMontefiore, continuing the Festival’s strong record in 20th Century history. Interspersed with the book covers, we’ll still have well-known faces but, again, which ones to choose? Two former cover stars returning to Chiswick this year will speak at Chiswick House on Victoria: A Life in Fact

GUEST WRITER

WORDS

West. This essential reading brings history, fact and fiction together to create an absorbing narrative which travels across time and countries.

THE EXTRAORDINARY DR EPSTEIN A biographical novel by Susan Lee Kerr Susan Lee Kerr inherited moveable roots. She was conceived in Australia, born in West Virginia, and lived in New York City until half her lifetime ago she landed in London. Her new book tells the story of an astonishing 19th century immigrant, her own great-grandfather. The Extraordinary Dr Epstein is based on solid fact, but Kerr chose to write it as fiction to allow for situations which facts alone cannot supply. The book uses family tales, history and imagination to explore the many facets of this dynamic, impossible man. The biographical aspect of the novel is supported by an innovative appendix titled Veritas, which clarifies fictional v non-fictional elements.

Susan Kerr is author of two self-help books and numerous magazine feature articles. Her book Creative Writing: the Matrix, exercises and ideas for creative writing teachers is the fruit of her years as a creative writing tutor. She brings history to life as a volunteer tour guide at the 18th century jewel that is Chiswick House and Gardens. Her haiku poetry is published in the journal of the British Haiku Society and has been anthologised. She is married and lives in London. e Kerr Susan Le

Kerr says the book has taken her whole life to write, “From age ten I had the ‘bones’ of Ephraim’s life, told by my grandmother, his daughter. I suspect she somehow also transmitted the message that I should be the one to write the story. But it was only 10 years ago that I finally dared begin the project and I needed context. What was his world like in Belarus, in 1846, in all his places up to 1900? I believe that events around us affect our attitudes and actions - so I was off into Russian and American history... Besides books and websites, images were a great source, because I needed to see what he saw: buildings, roads, trees, clothes, horses, trains. And I needed to see maps. Then there was the research on him. When I studied his information I found gaps, but enough clues to contact numerous sources (the seminary, the medical school, the naval archives, the university he founded and more). My journalistic background helped the detective work; creativity took over when I found no answers.” Ephraim Epstein lived his whole life so bound to truth that he constantly reinvented himself, even at the cost of what he held most dear. Starting on the fateful day he is told he must marry his cousin, the novel conjures up this brilliant man of conviction. Doctor, farmhand, missionary, sailor, scholar, journalist, university founder, Jew and Christian, Russian and American, he spoke seven languages, had two wives, fathered 10 children, one of whom died in a terrible tragedy. Ephraim’s uncompromising character drives him from Czarist Belarus to antebellum America, and then back across the Atlantic. In an epic sweep across continents and history from 1850 into the 20th century he finds himself in Thessalonica, in Vienna and in the Austrian Imperial Navy before returning to new American territory in the Wild

GARDEN NOTES Plants that pack a punch for late summer colour, writes Andy Eddy, Head Gardner at Osterley Park and House

as it never fails to produce thousands of flowers all the way up its many stems, seemingly with no pests that like to prey on it and always a great talking point with our visitors. All in all a little bit of effort at this time of the year with planning, looking at other garden planting displays and thought for the next year can really add colourful value to the late season display.

Now is the time to evaluate your garden or even visit other gardens for ideas on planting schemes that you could use next year. Here at Osterley we use many different annuals, biennials (all grown from seed) and other semi-tender plants such as dahlias and cannas. These plants are used to extend the flowering season at the end of the summer, often lasting right through until the first frosts in November. One of the mainstays of our display in the Tudor Walled garden at Osterley is a stunning annual climber called ‘Spanish Flag’ (Ipomea lobata) which we sow in March and then plant out once the risk of frost is over, this climber is self-twining, like a clematis, so won’t need tying in and as long as it has a frame, wall or even another shrub to climb up it will romp away for the whole of the summer. Flaunting its red and yellow, as the name implies Spanish national coloured blooms from early summer right through until the end of October makes for a very garden worthy plant. I cannot recommend this easily grown plant highly enough

WEST LONDON

Kitchens

Takes the headache out of kitchen design, writes Agnieszka Studzinska

I’ve said it before and will no doubt say it again 100 times, but one of the perks of being an editor is the chance to be able to review, taste and sample some of the products that are sent to us. When West London Kitchens placed an advertisement in out&about recently, I was elated because I had used their services to design our new kitchen and buy a kitchen from them. They were brilliant. I want to rave about the company, and not because I am biased or that they feature in the magazine, but because they really perform, and deliver with professionalism, speed and most importantly with a great one-to-one customer approach. They take the headache out of going to those big kitchen showrooms and offer you an aspirin of knowledge, trust and reputation. Keith Patterson, the company’s owner and director, visits your house, discusses your needs and the functionality and practicality of your kitchen; listens to your ideas and concerns. He then draws up a design for your kitchen. We hit bingo on the first kitchen plan and the rest was as smooth and seamless as our stainless steel worktop! Keith literally takes out the pain and stress of kitchen hunting. We picked our kitchen from a brochure with the simple action of pointing to “that one.” For those who feel a little more insecure about not seeing the real McCoy, before placing an order; Keith is able to show you previous bespoke Kitchens he has designed, which match the one you want, so that you can see the colour and feel the quality, which is top notch. I am as you can tell, a very happy, satisfied customer, who spends most of her family life in the kitchen, the heart of the home.

LOCAL HISTORY

KING HENRY’S HORRIBLE HISTORY Linda Lingham Taylor tells us a good story

Richmond Palace

huge congregations at open air sermons and was also a centre of scholarship with an impressive library of books and manuscripts. Katherine of Aragon had been a regular visitor and Henry VIII a pilgrim too, in his younger days. Unusually, it housed both nuns and monks, a mother abbess ruling over them with a confessor-general for spiritual direction.

King Henry VIII

One February night, in 1547, something bloody and wet lay on the cold flagstones of Syon Abbey’s ruined chapel. Looming above was a mighty coffin, draped in velvet and bearing a magnificently bejewelled wax effigy of a king: Henry VIII. His funeral procession had stopped there overnight on its way to Windsor Castle and later that morning, so the story goes, a starving dog breakfasted on the king’s leaked remains and could scarcely be dragged away. And this, it was claimed, fulfilled a dreadful prophecy made years earlier by a Franciscan friar. Syon Abbey was situated on the river bank opposite what is now Kew Gardens, an impressive building the size of Westminster Abbey, its foundations long buried beneath today’s mansion of Syon House and its lawns. Founded in 1415, it was part of Henry V’s ‘Great Work’ begun just before his triumph at Agincourt, which also included Sheen Priory (by Old Deer Park) and Sheen, (now Richmond) Palace. It was the only monastery of the Swedish Bridgettine order in England and named for Mount Sion in the Holy Land. One of the richest and most influential houses in the country, it was a major site of pilgrimage which hosted

But its ultimate fate was bound up with the ‘King’s Great Matter’, Henry’s longing for a legitimate male heir to secure the succession to the throne and his need, therefore, to divorce his first wife, the ageing Katherine, who had produced but one live child, Princess Mary. But it was his passion for Anne Boleyn which drove him harder. The pope refused to annul the marriage, so Cardinal Wolsey was replaced as chief minister by Thomas Cromwell, a Protestant reformer, and all legal ties were cut with Rome. The new Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Cranmer, verified the King’s divorce and remarriage and declared Anne, queen (just in time, as she was pregnant and was delivered of a girl, Elizabeth, in September 1533). In the midst of these heady events, William Peto, a friar of the Observant Franciscans in Greenwich, made his Biblical prophecy. He declared, to the king’s face, that his new marriage and split from Rome meant that ‘God’s judgements were ready to fall upon his head … and that dogs shall lick his blood as they had done [King] Ahab’ and his wife, Jezebel. Henry was angry, but not yet a tyrant, so he made only earnest intellectual arguments in response. But in 1534, he declared himself Supreme Head of the Church of England and made it treason to refuse the Oath of Supremacy or deny his divorce. Under heavy threat, many accepted the status quo, but there was opposition in particular from Carthusian

monks and the Bridgettines of Syon. Matters came to a head locally when the elderly vicar of All Saints in Isleworth, John Hale, was accused of treason by Robert Feron of Teddington, who claimed he had denounced the King’s Supremacy, calling him an heretical tyrant and a shameful adulterer with his ‘wife of fornication’, Anne. In his turn, Hale accused three Carthusian priors, John Houghton, Robert Laurence and Augustine Webster, once a monk at Sheen Priory, as well as Richard Reynolds, the Confessor-General of Syon.

He died at Whitehall Palace on 28th January 1547, but it was not until mid-February that his funeral procession set off for Windsor. The chariot, drawn by eight great horses, was draped in blue velvet and cloth of gold, the king’s effigy in crimson and ermine, bearing sceptre and orb and a crown on its head. At his death, Henry weighed more than 400 pounds and it took 16 Yeomen of the Guard to shift the lead-lined coffin. Perhaps it was the sheer weight of the load or perhaps an implosion of the bloated, rotting corpse within, that split the coffin, but next dawn, the chapel was filled with putrid stench and piles of ‘corrupted matter of a bloody colour’ spread across the floor. One William Grenville boasted of his heroic struggle to drag a frenzied, feeding mongrel away. Perhaps the shade of Henry’s fifth wife, Catherine Howard, bore mute witness to God’s supposed vengeance here. Imprisoned at Syon six years earlier, awaiting news of the King’s verdict on her adultery, it was from here that she took her last journey, to the Tower and execution. Who knows the truth of such tales? But a good story lives on forever.

lindalinghamtaylor@gmail.com

Reynolds had already caused trouble by inviting Elizabeth Barton, the popular ‘Holy Maid of Kent’, to Syon to meet Sir Thomas More, the chief opponent of the break with Rome. Barton had prophesised that the king would die soon and go to Hell. She was convicted of heresy and hanged. In April 1535, the Carthusians and Reynolds were charged with refusing the Oath, and in addition, Reynolds was accused of persuading others, in confession, not to submit to royal authority. Inevitably, all were found guilty (including Hale) and hanged, drawn and quartered on 4th May, at Tyburn. Reynolds’s head was left to rot on a spike over the Abbey gateway, a dreadful warning to others. (All five men were made saints in 1970). Syon Abbey did not survive much longer. The monasteries owned almost a quarter of the nation’s landed wealth and when Cromwell began their dissolution in 1536, all was forfeit to the Crown. Syon still ‘[stood] stif in thaire obstinacy’, but in the end were persuaded to accept the king’s Supremacy in the forelorn hope of saving the abbey, but in 1539, it became one of the last to be dissolved. And Henry? He began a great sportsman, tall and handsome, but his many injuries in jousting tournaments took their toll. In January 1536, he was thrown from his horse and crushed beneath it. Unconscious for hours, Queen Anne was told he must die, and the shock caused her miscarriage of a son. Five months later, she was executed

THE FOOD MARKET CHISWICK

Every Sunday come rain or shine The Food Market Chiswick sets up approximately 25 stalls on Market Drive, between Chiswick House and the river. Unlike many other farmers markets The Food Market Chiswick is run as a social enterprise with the profits being ploughed back into small local events and the surrounding Dukes Meadows grounds. Over the 15 years that the market has been running the profits have assisted in creating a wonderful adventure playground, paddling pool and sandpit which all prove incredibly popular with local families particularly in summer months. The money has also been used to plant trees, hedgerows and flowers in the meadows by the river. Every year The Food Market Chiswick and Dukes Meadows Trust put on free family summer events for local children and this year is no exception:

with a special protective glove. Then at 12 noon there will be a flying display in the fields behind. If you are looking for something to do with the kids and fill the long summer holiday ahead these events will be perfect for you and can be combined with a trip to the food market or the children’s playground and you will be supporting your local community while doing so. All events are free and there is no need for booking. The Food Market Chiswick is open Sundays 10.00am – 2.00pm

SUNSHINE

Escape to the warmth of Europe this summer, writes Rachel Jelley Over the last few days we have seen signs of the long-awaited great British Summer. “It’s about time,” I can hear you say. How long will it last? That is the big question. It isn’t just the weather that has been a bit grey of late. It can be argued, regardless of your vote, that the country has experienced a few gloomy days since the results of the EU referendum on 24th June. We have seen the strength of the pound weaken, changes in our political parties, questions asked about our freedom of movement within Europe, and England out of the European Cup! For those of us who work within the travel industry, it is business as usual. Until the UK officially leaves the European Union, the treaties and agreements in place to protect our right to travel and our access to medical treatments and insurance whilst on the continent remain unchanged. I am pleased to say that package holiday prices remain largely unchanged, and if anything there are now some excellent late offers available for travel in August. Prices for 7-night holidays to Greece for example start at £349pp. In Greece, a coffee can cost as little as £1, a pint of beer £3, a cocktail £4, a three-course meal with wine £20pp and that is even taking into account today’s rate of exchange. Let us take you to the sunshine and warmth of Greece this summer. LEMNOS:

It does exist! An unspoiled island with a very Greek flavour, relatively few tourists, excellent sandy beaches, a characterful port and a direct flight. The island in question is Lemnos. Stay at the Sotiris Apartments from £459pp. Price includes

return flights from Gatwick, shared transfers and 7 nights self-catering accommodation (studio). TOLON:

Built around the curve of a sheltered bay, Tolon has a very long sandy beach, a good selection of tavernas and an extensive excursion portfolio - it is possible to reach the historical sites of Olympia, Athens and Epidavros from here. Stay at the Lido Apartments from £529pp. Price includes return flights from Gatwick, shared transfers and 7 nights self-catering accommodation (one bedroom apartment). KEFALONIA:

Kefalonia is an island that rewards exploration many times over with its dramatic scenery, distinctive traditions, fine beaches and unspoiled way of life. Stay at the Lourdas Beach Apartments from £665pp. Price includes return flights from Gatwick, shared transfers and 7 nights self-catering accommodation (studio). SAMOS:

Samos offers such variety that everyone should be able to find what they want from a holiday here. Stay at the Pavlis Studios from £349pp. Price includes return flights from Gatwick, shared transfers and 7 nights self-catering accommodation (studio).

The Chiswick Fireplace Company was established in 1988. It was originally known for sourcing antique cast iron fireplaces from the Victorian, Edwardian and Art Nouveau periods. THE FIFIELD TWINS AND THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME Mary Marshall researches two of the 390 servicemen on the Isleworth War Memorial 1911 and a delivery-man when he enlisted in March 1915 at Hounslow; it seems likely he also was employed by Sahler. William was a Private in the 4th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment. His service record shows several periods of detention and absence without leave. In February 1916, he was sent to France. After months of preparation, the Battle of the Somme commenced on 1st July 1916. William was killed in action between 1st and 2nd July. The Middlesex Chronicle printed a short piece about his death and gives some information about his family including his twin Arthur. Arthur had joined the Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment). He served first in Gallipoli in 1915, was wounded and had his teeth blown out. In 1916 he was sent to France and was killed in action in the Somme trenches on 24th and 25th October, less than four months after his brother.

Upper Square, Isleworth c1900

William’s widow Kate moved to Battersea with her two young sons and remarried. Arthur’s widow, Annie, gave birth to a fifth daughter in May 1917. She lived on in Isleworth for about 50 years, with her daughters, first at 1 Lower Square and then 238 Worton Road, and remarried in 1939. Some of her daughters married and there may still be some Fifield descendants living in Isleworth today.

Percy Gardens, Isleworth June 1960

Twins Arthur and William Fifield were born in Isleworth in 1889. Their father was a coachman and groom. In 1891 the family lived over the coach-house of the Star and Garter Hotel by Kew Bridge; within a few years they moved back to Isleworth. In 1896 the twins and two younger sisters were baptised at All Saints, Isleworth, all on the same day. Their address was 3 Percy Gardens, North Street, and later they were at 23 North Street. The twins attended the Blue School and others in the district. Arthur married Annie Farmer in 1910. In 1911 they and their three-month-old daughter were living with her parents at 28 Loring Road. Arthur was a baker’s delivery man. In October 1914, while enlisting at Hounslow Barracks, he was arrested and charged with embezzling his employer, Hermann Sahler, baker (1 Upper Square). He said his pay was so poor that he could not keep his wife and children on it, and he took the money rather than see them starve. (His fourth daughter had just been born.) He was bound over on probation. In 1912 William married Kate Ambridge at St Bridget’s Roman Catholic Church. They had two sons, and lived at 121 Linkfield Road. William was employed as a baker in

HOUNSLOW CHAMBER

MEMBER NEWS What now for Hounslow Businesses?

Stephen Fry, CEO, Hounslow Chamber of Commerce

The outcome of the EU referendum will shape the future for generations to come, internationally, nationally and locally for us in Hounslow. Your Chamber of Commerce and our relationship with 18,000 firms borough wide, gives us an insight into what the result to leave will mean for borough businesses. Hounslow businesses will naturally be concerned about the future. What has become clear since the Referendum, is that there is not going to be any great rush to sign Article 50 - the legal document that indicates to the other 27 nations within the EU that we are going to leave. We need time to assess the implications, to negotiate a future and to unravel the UK from the EU institutions. Many commentators are suggesting this could take as long as two years. This means that there is no immediate change to the way we do business on a day-to-day basis. Hounslow SMEs are well used to dealing with challenge and change; they are nimble and adaptive. This flexibility will put us in good stead as things became clearer. Our message is simple: it is Business as Usual.

Our priority now is to help you and your business continue to be informed so we can all make the right decisions. Your calmness and sensibility to run your businesses as usual, to grow our economy, to create new opportunities and jobs, to attract inward investment will calm the markets and all we engage with. It is Business as Usual.

Regeneration Launch Bringing Hounslow and Europe together

Hounslow Chamber hosted a Regeneration launch on 28th April courtesy of Orbit Southern at their impressive building, Profile West, on the Great West Road in Brentford. The sun was shining that day and the views across the borough were impressive. Jon Milton of Orbit Southern welcomed guests and Brendon Walsh, Director of regeneration, economic development & environment, spoke of Hounslow Council’s presence at MIPIM, the international property fair held in Cannes each spring. Hounslow Council is present each year in the London Pavilion to extol the virtues of our borough to encourage inward investment, which bearing in mind the amount of property development across the borough is working! Long may it continue. Brendon’s presentation was followed by a debate regarding the EU referendum. A further debate was planned on 16th June with Seema Malhotra, MP for Feltham and Heston, and former shadow chief secretary to the Treasury and Kwasi

New Skills and Logistics Centre West Thames College opens the new Skills and Logistics Centre at Aspire 2016

West Thames College welcomed local business leaders and schools to the opening of the new Skills and Logistics Centre at Feltham on Wednesday, 11th May. The £3m project took almost a year to complete and includes a new 225m squared logistics training centre where the College will offer courses in logistics operations, warehouse management and goods vehicle driving. The construction workshops will be re-housed in a new purpose built facility across two floors covering almost 800 square meters. The new building contains state-of-the-art plumbing and carpentry workshops, a double height space for scaffolding and working at height as well as areas for machinery and tool storage. On the first floor there is a flexible multi-skill

West Thames College will be one of the few colleges in London to offer data cabling courses to help meet the ever-growing demand for trained communication workers. A key feature of the build is that is it will require students to work with the same tools and processes used in industry. The college will run a live online ordering system, managed by the logistics students, who will run the trade counter, manage stock control and replenishment - in other words the Logistics Centre will provide the logistics for the College. As Tracy Aust, new principal of West Thames College explains, “We are very excited about the opening of the new Logistics Centre. It demonstrates our commitment to ensuring that our courses reflect the changing needs of employers and provide the right training for young people to secure jobs in our area.”

Logic Studio School opens in Feltham Logic Studio School is now officially open, offering a different kind of education for Year 10 and Year 12 students, “It’s an incredibly competitive world, and students now need more than just good grades to succeed,” says Principal Jay Lockwood. “Our students will have all the skills, knowledge and confidence to really stand out, and be highly employable, when they leave school. They will also benefit by making some great connections with leading businesses, thanks to the six weeks of work experience they will enjoy each year they are at Logic.” Students aged 14 to 18, will be able to study subjects that open doors to their future career, including computing, business, events, logistics and creative media. They’ll have the opportunity to learn from both teachers and leading industry experts, in a more relevant and applied way. All students will also benefit from having a personal coach to help them through their learning journey. “Our

Launch of the Creative Tech Triangle A celebratory evening

The launch of Creative Tech Triangle Ltd was celebrated on 6th June at QVC, the shopping channel based at Building 8 at Chiswick Park. The drinks reception, with wine and delicious canapés courtesy of QVC and Beck Greener, who specialise in intellectual property including trade marks, patents, designs and copyright, attracted more than 60 companies from the creative/tech sector. The evening was deemed a great success with tours of QVC being much in demand. QVC is only one of two companies within Chiswick Business Park to take over an entire building. Their decision to do so was due, in no small part, to the high ceilings, ideal for television studio space.

goal, is to help students to access a better future by bridging the gap between education and the modern economy,” concludes Jay. “There’s still time for students to join us.”

The reception started with Dermot Boyd of QVC welcoming the guests, followed by John Raynor of Beck Greener who gave a brief overview of their services. Stephen Fry outlined the aims of Creative Tech Triangle, “12% of the Borough’s workforce is employed in the Creative Tech sector, greater in number than Old Street/ Shoreditch, but unlike that cluster, our cluster is more spread out, from Hammersmith to Shepherd’s Bush to Heathrow. Creative Tech Triangle will be working with TV Triangle run by Nigel Walley and LinkWest, organised by Katie Hobbs, to provide a platform for all the tech, broadcast, media and production companies in west London.” There will be a Table Football Tournament on 9th August – contact Sally Smith for more details. It is hoped that Sky will open their doors to us in September – again watch this space!
