LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Welcome to the December/January issue of out&about. I think London is a great place to be at Christmas. I love all the traditions: the wreaths, the wrapping, the stockings, the food. Sara Ward is up to her elbows in festive cooking and doing creative things with ivy and mistletoe at Hen Corner. If I were one of her chickens I’d keep a low profile. Page 10
and come away with your very own lovingly crafted bit of metal. Page 23 This edition has a story: The Outsider, by Sophie Koziell, from Chiswick. You wouldn’t think so to read it, but she happens to be 13. Her story won the Dragonfly Tea short story competition, ages 12-15 at the Henley Literary Festival.
Christmas traditions don’t all have to date back to our pagan past. The Paddleboarders at Kew Bridge are fast creating their own Christmas tradition: an annual outing dressed as Santas. It’s surreal to watch a flotilla of Santas floating down the river and great fun to join in. Page 6
I’m not much for making new year resolutions, but I have decided to learn to play the piano, which is something I’ve had a notion to do for years. I think it’s hearing about the fun they have at Chiswick Saturday Music Centre that has finally made up my mind to do it. Page 14
If the English do Christmas well, you have to hand it to the Chinese for new year celebrations. 2017 is the year of the rooster and the Magical Lantern Festival will be returning to the gardens of Chiswick House with a tableau of huge brightly coloured lanterns on the theme of the Silk Road. Page 8
Happy New Year and all the best for 2017.
Business awards don’t have quite the allure of the red carpet at the Oscars, but when I went to the Hounslow Business Awards I realised how much it means to people beavering away in unglamorous industries like logistics and plumbing to be recognised for the excellence of their work. It’s also good for us as consumers too to know which are the best firms in our area. Page 20

Left to my own devices I’m more drawn to the creative industries, so was delighted to find that not only does Brentford have a blacksmith, but he does ‘Blacksmith Experience’ days where you can try your hand at smithing

FATHER CHRISTMAS TAKES TO THE THAMES Alec Lom on a unique Christmas event If you thought Santa Claus’ only mode of transport at this time of year was by reindeer-powered sleigh through the snow, then think again. Welcome to the weird and wonderful event ‘Santa-SUP’. For the uninitiated, SUP stands for Stand Up Paddleboarding, which is currently the world’s fastest-growing watersport. That may explain why, on Saturday 17th December, dozens of eccentric paddlers will be dressing up in their red cloaks and white beards to take part in this colourful, festive, annual event on the River Thames. The theme for Santa SUP is anything remotely Christmassy, and everyone is welcome to join in. You don’t have to be a member of any club, as this event is open to anyone and no previous experience is required. “In previous years, we’ve had people turning up dressed in red robes as Santa, but also others who prefer to come along dressed as reindeers. Some people just wear a Santa hat, which is also fine,” says Paul Hyman, leader of the expedition and Founder of Londonbased hosts Active360, Britain’s biggest SUP school.
6
The cost for beginners is £55, and this includes a two-hour lesson. Returning paddlers pay £20. The paddle expedition lasts approximately two hours and mulled wine is served at the end. The atmosphere on the trip is tremendous fun with passers-by and tourists strolling along the towpaths and over bridges offering warm words of encouragement as the flotilla of Santas drifts by. “People love taking photos of us. It’s a bit surreal, as you may imagine, seeing a load of Santas floating down the Thames. It always goes down well with the crowds,” adds Paul. On Saturday 17th December, Santa SUP leaves Brentford Boating Arch north shore Kew Bridge, setting out at 10.45am (meet at 10.15am). The expedition paddles down to the Ship pub at Barnes for a quick stop and a hot drink, then heads back to Kew for mulled wine at 1pm. At 1.30pm, the party moves on to Stable Pizza to try out some of the 50 types of cider, as well as their pizzas and pies (optional).

Magical
LANTERN FESTIVAL Celebrating the Year of the Rooster
The Magical Lantern Festival returns to the gardens of Chiswick House in 2017 following the hugely successful UK launch last January. The trail of large, brightly-coloured sculptures lit from within, of flamingos, flowers, Chinese warriors with their horses and a spectacular dragon alongside the lake quickly became a huge hit, attracting people from all over London and becoming one of the top attractions for families. This time the organisers have given the display a theme, The Silk Road and added a number of other attractions – an ice bar, a funfair, an ice rink and a virtual reality experience which they hope will make it even bigger and better. The festival is part of a UK-wide celebration of the Chinese New Year 2017, the Year of the Rooster and is described as a fusion of art, heritage and culture. Lantern festivals have a rich 2,000-year history in China. The tradition of lighting up lanterns on “Yuan Xiao” (New Year) started in the Han Dynasty (202 BC), became very popular during the Tang Dynasty (618 AD) and grew under the 17th century Qing Dynasty into the large-scale grand celebration with feasting and fireworks it has become today. Visitors will follow a trail around Chiswick House Gardens and explore amazing giant lanterns that highlight the cultures

Calendar THE CHISWICK
Bridget Osborne celebrates The Chiswick Calendar’s second birthday
which traded along the Silk Road between Europe and Asia. Starting with a five metre high representation of the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben, as you wander through the gardens your journey will take you through the palaces of Arabia, Persia and Egypt, to the Tales of Aladdin, India before arriving in ancient China, the voyages of Admiral Zheng He, with his legendary ship and a giant blue whale all depicted in huge lanterns. High art it is not, but if the first Magic Lantern Festival is anything to go by it will be vibrant and colourful and great fun.

Tickets for the lantern trail: Adults (16+) £16.50. Child (4 – 16) £10.50. Concessions £14.50. HEN CORNER Sara Ward, living in the present and planning ahead… Do you ever find you’ve been busily preparing for something, but when it comes to it you don’t enjoy it as much as you’d hoped because your mind is already on the next thing? Unfortunately, I regularly find myself in that position and I am trying to take time each day to be thankful for all I have and enjoy being present in the moments that matter with family and friends. Of course, preparation and planning is very important, but let’s not lose the precious gift of the present, the here and now’. As we enter the holiday season with its celebrations and surprises, I’ve got more than one list on the go and am checking them twice, almost every day. As Hen Corner is also our family home, the decorations, food and events are to be shared with course guests and customers, as well as neighbours and friends. Our first festive activities began in November with all kinds of courses aiming to encourage, empower and equip guests to make wonderful creations to share throughout the season of giving. Now we turn our attention to special treats, bakes, preserves and hampers that can be given to loved-ones during the festivities. We’ve got all our new courses for 2017 open for bookings and sell gift vouchers for those who might enjoy new experiences. As we look into the new year full of promise and expectation, are there skills that you’d like to master or challenges you’d like to achieve?
Katie, my baking buddy, and I are booked into a fantastic week long bread-making course in January and can’t wait to bring our new skills back to the micro bakery. Back at Hen Corner, we will give attention, yet again, to creating a beautiful garden that survives alongside our flock of freeranging hens. We managed to protect the kitchen garden quite well last year, until the plants grew too tall for our netted frames and, within minutes of propping open the frames, the chickens darted into the raised beds scratching up the soil for a dust bath. We will also commit to the ongoing battle that is protecting our almonds from the squirrels, I don’t blame the pesky rodents as the nuts are delicious, however, they are my nuts and I want to eat them! As we look at the blank canvas of a new year, with spring and summer on the horizon, let’s plan for a new rhythm that helps us value the present, be that a moment of thankfulness over breakfast or supper or a commitment to get outside, whatever the weather, and take a deep breath of fresh air... For details of all our courses see www.HenCorner.com/ Courses The MicroBakery at Hen Corner will be selling Christmas bakes on Fridays 2nd, 9th & 16th December. Special orders can be collected on Thursday 22nd December. We re-open on Friday 20th January, 2017

FESTIVAL OF BUSINESS 2017
FESTIVAL OF BUSINESS
The festival begins with a VIP breakfast, followed by the formal opening of the expo at 10am. Keynote speakers will be on hand throughout the day to inspire visitors as they share their stories for success and an outdoor vehicle display from manufacturers including Tesla and Toyota will also feature as part of the day’s activities.
Kick-start 2017 January can often be a quiet month as businesses recover from the Christmas and New Year sales, and the rest of us nurse our hangovers and get over the shock of the festive credit card bills. In 2017, however, Hounslow Chamber of Commerce aims to kick-start 2017 with the Festival of Business at Hilton Syon Park on 26th January. The inaugural festival is a business-to-business expo for companies across Hounslow and West London. Hounslow Chamber’s Chief Executive, Stephen Fry said: “We are delighted to be launching the Festival of Business as an exciting new initiative to promote business in Hounslow and West London. We have hundreds and hundreds of brilliant companies in Hounslow and we want to give them the opportunity to meet one another, showcase their products and services and provide valuable opportunities for supply chain development”. “The Festival, which is an all-day event, won’t be a soulless expo with rows of badly thought out stands. What you will find is a hive of creativity, ideas and inspiration to help grow your business. If you’re a fully-fledged business, in the early stages of starting one, or are a buyer for a company you will find a wealth of reputable and highly-skilled suppliers all under one roof ”.
12
The Festival of Business is being organised in partnership with FHW Events & Marketing, the publishers of out&about. Isabella Harding, FHW’s Events Director, said: “We hope businesses across Hounslow will visit the Festival of Business; stands are available from just £195 + VAT, and it is free to attend as a visitor. Put the date in your diary now and come and see us in January”.

MUM I’M IN A BAND! Elizabeth Uwalaka on the fun of learning music at the Chiswick Saturday Music Centre Ask any child if they love going into school on a Saturday and you can probably guess what the answer will be right away! The Chiswick Saturday Music Centre is the exception. The centre offers music tuition at Chiswick School on Saturday mornings and is run by volunteers, mostly parents of the children who go there. Diana French-Paris, who teaches piano, says “What I like about teaching at the centre is that the students are focused – they turn up to lessons early, having practiced. It’s really nice to see, really rewarding.” Accustomed to teaching privately’ she says “a lot of these children aren’t used to one-on-one tuition and they appreciate it”.
What makes the biggest difference, according to parent Carol Tait, is that the students have the opportunity to play together. Her three sons have all learned instruments at the Chiswick Saturday Music Centre. Ben, now 19, started learning drumming when he could barely see over the drum kit. He reached grade 8 and still plays in a band. Ollie, 17 (pictured below with his band Kyoto Lux) has also reached grade 8 in guitar and is thinking of studying music at university. “I don’t think they would have that degree of interest in music without it”, says Carol. “The great thing about the music school is that you learn your instrument, which you pay for, but you’ve also got rock, jazz, percussion, theory and singing groups that you can take part in for free which gives you the experience of playing with other people”. The centre is run as a not-for-profit organisation which aims to bring the benefits and pleasure of musical tuition to people with a wide range of abilities. Jacob, who has Down’s syndrome, has been going for 10 years and has developed

FEATURE a sense of rhythm and real musicology and is completely confident performing in front of an audience at concerts. Children of all ages are welcome. There are some as young as three and at the other end of the scale there are also adults learning an instrument for the first time. The centre makes a small number of grants each term in the form of reduced student fees for families who qualify.

METAL WORKS the old forge in Brentford
three day ‘Blacksmith Experience’ course and from day one he was hooked. He had always been interested in cars, playing around with body work but his first job was with a fabrication place making the stainless steel stalls for the revamped Spitalfields market. After spending some time with a master blacksmith in Guildford he can now make pretty much anything out of metal and set up on his own business two years ago. “The trick with blacksmithing is not to waste anything”, he says. “The idea is that you don’t cut anything off or add anything, you try and make it all in one piece.”
What might you expect to find in Brentford High Street? A supermarket, a pet store, a furniture shop, a blacksmith. A blacksmith? Yes, a blacksmith. Tucked away in the grounds of the London Museum of Water and Steam by Kew Bridge is London’s oldest continuously working forge. Set up in 1838 when the Grand Junction Water Works Company established the pumping works to provide water from the Thames to their customers in Paddington, visitors to the present day museum can easily walk past it, as it blends in so naturally as part of the fabric of the place.
He now runs his own ‘Blacksmith Experience’ days where you can learn the basic techniques: how to manage a fire, to twist metal, to ‘draw down’ (make a point), to ‘neck’ a piece of metal (make it narrower) and how to split it. Depending on how you get on, you should have your very own poker or toasting fork to take home.

Neil Brown is the blacksmith in residence, there most days making everything from candlesticks to huge gates and staircases. The only thing you won’t find him doing is shoeing horses, as these days that is the job of a farrier. Neil is primarily an artist, having come to blacksmithing in a roundabout fashion. He studied sculpture at A-Level but started work in graphic design and model-making, designing graphics for pilot training programmes before gravitating to IT and spending 10 years where the money was, in network systems support. Realising his heart wasn’t in it, he was casting about for an alternative career when he went on a

STORY
THE OBSERVER By Sophie Koziell, Henley Literary Festival winner of the Dragonfly Tea short story competition, ages 12 to 15
I watch as they listen; my shallow breaths virtually imperceptible like the fleeting shadow of a solitary wolf wandering a frozen forest. I am hidden from view, a silent existence. To them, all is as solemn and mute as a morgue, but in the distance, I hear a clock ticking, slow and steady, synchronised to the beat of my unique heart. I hear far better than them, the sounds they miss, the sounds they cannot hear, unable to comprehend either due to the lack of senses, or plain denial. I am not one of them. I am not part of this world nor do I matter; I am a mere spectator, narrator of this unusual, yet wonderful play of lives. There is only one purpose to my visit: to satisfy my curiosity of what some may define as ‘adventure’. I travel from house to house, watching all that takes place there. In one, a man falls to the ground, his head in his hands. The thrill he had felt only hours previously has now grown into something harsh. Instead he feels guilt and regret for what he had just done. Nearby, a well-dressed woman lies on the ground, unable to move, her hands on her chest as she continues to tremble with her only remaining strength. Minutes float by like daydreams, as she takes her last, wheezing breath. It floats in the air like a precious butterfly, beating its wings, and then collapsing. In another, a couple interlock fingers, and continue to shake with a mixture of excitement and suspense. They are silent, and still. A phone rings. Seconds after answering, they are up on their feet,
L@outandabout_mag
dancing with joy, shouting words I cannot understand. The more I see, the more I question, “Which situation is adventure?” I halt at a playground, considering many possible definitions. Children explore and imagine, natural and happy in their existence. But most are kept close by their watchful parents, whom I see removing their precious children from what they believe to be dangerous, but in fact, leading them to something far more fearful; closure of imagination and creativity. The park is filled with adult emotions that most children have not encountered. Some are showing concern, others regret and guilt, sadness; some happiness, even ecstasy. They think the children aren’t watching, but they are wrong. Some children even notice me, pointing in my direction some shouting, some crying. The adults brush it off as immaturity, lacking the creative energy to see. Then, it dawns upon me. To have an adventure, every emotion is needed. An adventure needs thrill and extreme terror, it needs pain and sadness, surprise and elation. Growing up is an adventure. Existing is an adventure, even dying. Simply, to have an adventure, you just need to live. Anywhere you are, whoever you are, to you, life is the adventure, and only you can discover where it takes you.

A small family-run business named the best in the country! HOUNSLOW CHAMBER
MEMBER NEWS Heathrow receives the go-ahead
By Stephen Fry, Chief Executive of Hounslow Chamber
Hounslow Chamber is delighted that the Government has at last made a decision and we are extremely happy with the decision to approve Heathrow for expansion and to build a third runway. We believe this decision is correct for two clear reasons: 1. It now means businesses in west London can plan for a post Brexit economy secure that we will have a global player in Heathrow that will now be able to deliver a proper global reach. 2. The UK Government has sent a clear signal to our existing and future markets by agreeing to allow huge infrastructure projects like Heathrow: a post-Brexit UK is open for business: “Come and trade with us”. The approval of the third runway and Heathrow expansion is the right choice for business. Moreover it is the right choice for the UK and will play a pivotal role in ensuring our postBrexit economy is a success. We look forward to working with Heathrow, Hounslow Council and regional and central government to ensure that local businesses play a key role in the economic growth expansion will bring. We also look forward to working with other regional chambers of commerce to ensure that an expanded Heathrow secures the expected benefits for the whole of the UK.
Hounslow Chamber of Commerce confirmed its continued support of an expanded Heathrow and joined with a raft of business leaders to sign the declaration to pledge their commitment to work with the Government to develop those plans and ensure that Britain begins to reap the benefits of expansion before the end of the decade.
The Government has demonstrated it is not afraid of big infrastructure projects and is signalling to the world that a post-Brexit UK is open for business. Hounslow Chamber of Commerce joined CBI, FSB, British Chambers of Commerce, BIFA, Unite the Union, London First, EEF, British American Business & BALPA, demonstrating our commitment to ensuring Heathrow expansion means jobs and growth. Heathrow airport already supports one in five local jobs (22%), making the airport one of the largest single-site employers in the country. The Government confirmed last week that Heathrow expansion will deliver up to 77,000 additional local jobs and create 5,000 new apprenticeships, doubling the number that will be provided by the project to 10,000 by 2030.
Best Education Architectural Practice 2016 is awarded to a Chiswick-based architectural practice and Hounslow Chamber director
30
The buildings and structures we live in and encounter shape the way we view the world, and therefore the architecture industry has an important role to play in shaping the world as we know it. Innovation, dedication and creativity are all key to success in this competitive and dynamic sector, as clients demand increasingly new and expressive creations that do more than reflect the current industry trends.
Mustafa Erdem, Director of E&E Architects International Limited, said “We are delighted to announce that we have been named Best Education Architectural Practice 2016 in Build Magazine’s 2016 Architecture Awards.”
The 2016 Architecture Awards have been put in place to highlight the amazing work done by the talented designers, artists and visionaries whose talent and innovation have created talking points that will span generations.
“We have been officially recognised as one of the top performers in this creative, technical and incredibly fast-moving industry.”

MEMBER NEWS Do what mum and dad tell you! For many the perfect business is a family business, ideally one developed over generations. If you run such a business, the cherry on the cake is delivered when you receive recognition for the way in which successive generations have grown and modernised the business. On October 18th 2016 this is exactly what happened to Top Hat Dry Cleaners when they collected the prestigious “Best Independent Dry Cleaners” award at a national ceremony in Birmingham. A small family-run business, based in Chiswick and Hammersmith is named the best in the country! Mike Moran, the owner, is also a Director of Hounslow Chamber – what a talented bunch we attract! Mike Moran collected the award in person and immediately acknowledged not only the efforts of his staff team but also the defining role played by his parents, Mike and Pat Moran, who started Top Hat in 1967. “It’s appropriate we should receive this award on the eve of our 50th anniversary next year. Mum and dad started the ball rolling in 1967 and 50 years later I’m still doing what they taught me. Our technology is state-of-the-art, of course – modern, efficient and environmentally friendly – but our customer service is still the most important part of our business and I learned that from mum and dad.” “Dry cleaning isn’t glamorous, but it is a necessity and is a key service for busy people. It’s about more than clean clothes though; my staff are important, so I’m grateful
32
to them and appreciate their hard work, but equally importantly we’re all part of the local community. That’s why a national award is so nice, it joins up the local and the national. We have been recognised nationally for serving the community so well.” The annual LCN Awards recognise and reward best practice in the dry cleaning and laundry industries and are sponsored by the TSA (Textile Services Association), CINET Professional Textile Care and The Guild of Cleaners and Launderers. So, see what happens when you follow your mum and dad’s example…

CLARENCE HOUSE SCHOOL
Clarence House Prep School Clarence House is a new independent school for girls aged 7 to 11 in the heart of Hampton Hill. It is the preparatory school of Jack and Jill Nursery and PrePreparatory School. Our first Year Three class opened in September 2016. Since 1951 Jack and Jill Nursery and Pre-Preparatory School has provided girls with an outstanding education, grounded in our founder Molly Papirnik’s belief that school should represent a ‘home from home’. Our new preparatory, Clarence House, offers everything you expect of a selective girls’ independent school: high standards of behaviour and achievement, outstanding pastoral care, and specialist teaching for sport, coding, music and art. We are built to meet the needs of modern working families, offering a full mini-bus service, a breakfast club, after school sport, societies and homework club, and year-round holiday clubs.
We have spent a great deal of time thinking about what girls will need to thrive, so Clarence House is different in several important ways: Clarence House is a small school, meaning we can provide your daughter with individual support and mentoring. Clarence House is a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics specialist school, with a dedicated science laboratory, a ‘maker space’ for building models, robots and prototypes, and state-of-the-art technology in every classroom. And we have special focus on developing grit – perseverance and a passion for learning – that influences everything we do at Clarence House.
Contact our registrar, Sam Mellins, on 020 8898 7310 to learn more about entry to Year Three or Year Four.
“We have special focus on developing grit – perseverance and a passion for learning – that influences everything we do at Clarence House.”
