LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Welcome to the October / November issue of Out & About.
Mighty Wurlitzer organ. Page 5
As politicians debate Brexit and the issue of sovereignty, it’s interesting to remember that without the decisive action of parliamentarians in Brentford and Chiswick at the start of the English Civil War, the history of British democracy might have been very different. The war might have been all over in a matter of months and settled in favour of the King. As it was, the Battle of Turnham Green on 13th November 1642 stopped the royalist army entering London and forced them to retreat. This year is the 375th anniversary. See how you can follow the events of the battle with the Battlefields Trust trail. Pages 14 & 15
If cabaret is more to your taste, read Erica Weston’s article on the autumn programme at Watermans arts centre. Page 18
The artist Jason Bowyer has an anniversary of his own to celebrate – 20 years of painting and drawing at the London Museum of Water and Steam by Kew Bridge. Flowers on the Anvil, Friday 13th – Sunday 15th October, is an exhibition of work by an artist whose professional career has seen him painting in such diverse environments as Craven Cottage and Camp Bastion. Page 8 Jason and his brother Francis are scions of a well-known family of artists in Chiswick. The brothers are taking part in Chiswick In Pictures, an exhibition at the Clayton Hotel Chiswick, featuring the work of 17 local artists and photographers, including the work of Jon Perry, whose photograph is on the front cover. Watermans is asking for your support. It’s being relocated to the site of Brentford’s old police station as part of the redevelopment of the town centre, but finds that the developers’ promise of a theatre twice as big as their current one have been altered to plans for one that’s little bigger than the space they have now. They’re not happy and they want your help. Page 19 New kid on the block Paul Cooney is winning awards for the Chiswick branch of estate agents Horton & Garton. EDITOR’S TIPS Where to go for the best fireworks • Bonfire night falls on a Sunday this year, so the weekend of Friday 3rd – Sunday 5th November will be a mega fireworks weekend. The nearest big shows for our bit of west London are at Chiswick Park, Richmond Athletics Ground, Ravenscourt Park on the Chiswick / Hammersmith borders and Dukes Meadows Golf Club.
• Another lovely thing to do is to take the Fireworks Cruise run by Chiswick Pier Trust, which this year will be on Saturday 11th November.
• If you prefer a more intimate setting, the Hare & Hounds pub in Osterley promises an evening of family fun, live music and entertainment on Friday 3rd with mulled wine and cider, stilt walkers and fire breathers! Supervised children’s entertainment from 6pm. Fireworks at 8.30pm.

parliamentary troops at the house of Sir Richard Wynn (demolished in the 19th century) where Syon Park is now. The parliamentarians fled at first but put up a barricade at Brentford Bridge which they managed to defend for about an hour. They held the Royalists off at a second barricade for two or three hours more but the royalists prevailed and the parliamentary soldiers either ran back towards

London or tried to swim the River Thames and many drowned. On the night of 12th / 13th they tried to move cannon and ammunition down the Thames by barge but were fired on from Syon House and threatened by royalist cannon near Kew Bridge. By 8am on 13th November an army of 24,000 parliamentarians had formed on open land centred on what is today Turnham Green. All that remains of the common now are discrete areas: Turnham Green, Chiswick Back Common, Acton Common and Acton Green, but in the 17th century they were all part of one large common. The parliamentary forces assembled there were a mix of regiments commanded

by the Earl of Essex, the London Militia, sailors and volunteers and they outnumbered the royalist army by two to one. It must have been hard-fought because the Battle of Turnham Green resulted in a stalemate, but by blocking the path of the Royalist army to London the Parliamentarians gained an important strategic victory. The battle denied Charles and his army access to London and a swift end to the war. The royalist army was forced to retreat to Oxford for secure winter quarters, where the Earl of Essex did not pursue them. The war was to drag on for another four years.

Andy Eddy, Osterley Park's Head Gardener, shares with us some of the work taking place in the gardens at this time of year, with some tips on the planting of trees within an historic environment. During my time at Osterley I have been pioneering the planting of trees as young ‘whips’ – the term used in the trade for small trees that are only about one meter in height when purchased from wholesale suppliers. There are many good reasons for planting trees at this size including cost - a whip is always going to be far cheaper to buy as the nurseryman will only have had to grow/keep it for one year at the nursery, as opposed to the £50.00 you will need for a full standard (a tree that is usually about two meters tall). These are valid considerations but of course cost isn’t always a main consideration when planting within a historic landscape/garden environment. The main reason that I choose to plant trees of this size is their establishment rates; these young trees can be planted in a much smaller hole which takes less time and also due to their size will never need staking - the only annual maintenance that will be needed is to weed and mulch a ‘tree circle’ around them for the first 5 years as competition from grass and weeds is a real factor with their establishment. They then grow at a greatly improved rate when compared to larger trees and will overtake the larger standard specimens within four to five years. The pictures that I have included show a young Malus ‘John Downie’ which was planted last autumn and is showing its first fruits, the second picture is of a 'Sorbus aucuparia' which was planted 6 years ago. This proves that these trees, when planted as whips, soon take over larger planted trees which take many years to establish and a more natural tree outline is achieved. Do look out for them when you next visit Osterley Park.

So our trusty cabaret programmer sees all the shows for you and books in the ones she thinks you’ll love. £6M HOLE IN THE PLAN FOR A `WORLD CLASS WATERMANS’ Watermans wants your help to achieve a bigger, better arts space for Brentford ‘We don’t simply want to transpose what we do in our current building into a new one. We want people to be inspired the moment they walk through our doors while feeling welcomed and at home. We want them to have an experience that they want to talk about’ say the Watermans team. To do this, they say the building must provide a theatre suitable for world-class touring theatre, circus, live music and dance, two cinemas and a larger gallery to enable film festivals, live screenings and larger-scale exhibitions and social spaces for people to meet and relax, eat and drink. Watermans is on the move. The slightly down-at-heel arts centre which looks so much like a 1960s car park that it feels compelled to put a big sign up saying ‘I AM NOT A CAR PARK’ has provided a year-round programme of independent cinema, theatre, comedy, cabaret, exhibitions, workshops and festivals for over 30 years, but is being relocated to the site of Brentford’s old police station as part of the redevelopment of the town centre. The arts centre has chosen to see the move as a once-in-ageneration opportunity to make a step-change in what they can offer, but have been deeply disappointed that the initial offer by the developers has been reduced. Instead of a theatre twice the size of their current one, they’re now being offered theatre space which is only a little bigger than their current space, dashing their hopes of creating a world-class arts centre that would ‘put Brentford on the cultural map, ignite its economy and inspire its residents’.
L@outandabout_mag
Until now they have gone along with the plans, not even complaining at the loss of their lovely riverside site, preferring instead the carrot of ‘bigger, better, modern facilities to enable us to be the kind of artistic and social hub that this part of West London needs and deserves’. But now they realise there is a £6m hole in what they need to achieve that, they are asking the public to join their campaign for a ‘World Class Watermans.’ If you would like to support their campaign, email them at: WorldClass@watermans.org.uk and post on social media using the hashtag #WorldClassWatermans

MAKING GOOD USE OF THE APPLE HARVEST Sara Ward, Hen Corner We may be used to food bubbling away when boiling potatoes or simmering a soup, but here at Hen Corner we get very excited to see food and drink begin to bubble by itself when left to its own devices. Regular readers will know that we try to produce as much of our own food as possible and when we harvest from the garden, we set to work preserving it to allow us months of enjoyment through the darker days of winter. There are many techniques for preventing the deterioration usually caused by bacteria: drying, pickling in vinegar, making jam with sugar and cooking down for a chutney. Apples are our biggest crop and after we’ve selected some of the best Bramley apples to freeze, perfect for pies throughout winter, we gather as many apples as possible, from friends and neighbours too, for our annual Cider Sunday event. The apples are washed and chopped, then crushed to make the juice that is fermented into cider.
The fresh juice is simply stored in sterilized demijohns sealed with an airlock valve that allows pressurised carbon dioxide to escape but prevents oxygen coming in contact with the juice. The natural wild yeasts already on the apples react to the release of sweet juice when pressed and begin to feast on the sugars. They release the by-product of fermentation, carbon dioxide, in bubbles and within a couple of weeks have converted the natural apple sugars into alcohol. All we need to do is to syphon off the top, leaving the dead yeast behind, and bottle up securely with a teaspoon of sugar to guarantee a lovely fizz when we are ready to drink it. Another way that we utilise the wild yeast is to capture some in a flour and water paste allowing us to make scrumptious sourdough bread. If you’d like to try our Classic Sourdough, we sell them every Friday at the Micro Bakery and if you want to try fermenting dough yourself, come and join us for Sourdoughs & Special Breads on Tuesday 10th October.

CHAMBER NEWS Hounslow Business Awards 2017 The hunt is on for the best businesses in Hounslow for 2017. Now in their fifth year, Hounslow Chamber of Commerce organises these awards in association with Hounslow Highways to recognise and reward the achievements of the local business community across the whole of the London Borough of Hounslow. Businesses were invited to put themselves forward for selection. The finalists were then invited to a gala dinner and awards ceremony at the Hilton London Syon Park Hotel, on 12th October.
All exceptional businesses Stephen Fry, Chief Executive of Hounslow Chamber of Commerce, said: “I continue to be very impressed with the quality, enthusiasm and passion of the businesses that enter these awards. They demonstrate that Hounslow is an exciting place to work and recognition from these awards can make a difference when securing new customers and new business”. Each year applications are welcomed from all local businesses in the borough, large and small. Speaking on behalf of title sponsors Hounslow Highways, service director Rob Gillespie said: “Hounslow Highways is very pleased to be the headline sponsor for the Hounslow Business Awards for the third consecutive year. Hounslow has a diverse and entrepreneurial business base and we are delighted to support their success”. Councillor Steve Curran, Leader of Hounslow Council, said: “The Hounslow Business Awards are the perfect opportunity

for our local businesses to showcase just what they are doing and who they are. We’re extremely proud to be sponsoring these awards again. We want to celebrate our businesses and the part they play in our community. "Through our partnerships with medium and large businesses we have assisted the smallest of firms to gain access to the Heathrow supply chain that will reap them benefits and profits. Selling their products, services, skills and expertise into a remarkable growth machine."

CHAMBER NEWS Want a slice of the business generated by Heathrow? Hounslow Chamber, working with a number of other business development groups, held a networking day focused on Heathrow procurement on 21st September. At the networking lunch, which was followed by afternoon workshops and an evening reception, a succession of speakers talked about how to achieve the best value for businesses and communities, now, during and after the expansion of Heathrow. Overall the day attracted around 130 companies. For more on how small businesses can break into the Heathrow supply chain, come to the Heathrow Business Summit on 8th November at the Sofitel, Terminal 5. The Heathrow Business Summit welcomes all small businesses and gives them the opportunity to talk and pitch directly to the key individuals responsible for finding new suppliers for the Heathrow supply chain.

CHAMBER NEWS New Spa de Sal opens in Brentford A new spa is opening in Brentford, of a type you probably have not yet encountered. The Spa de Sal is for children and adults with respiratory illnesses or conditions and aims to make breathing easier so that medication is more effective. Based on the same principle as a restorative trip to Skegness,
the idea is that by getting a lungful of salty air your breathing becomes easier. There are only a handful of such spas in the UK. They were introduced here ten years ago from Eastern Europe, where the treatment has been used for a long time. It was noticed that men who worked in the salt mines didn’t seem to get colds or respiratory illnesses. Matilda Goes, Director of the new spa, found out about this kind of therapy because she herself suffers from Bronchiectasis, a respiratory condition which causes chronic coughing. Although she is dependent on inhalers, she’s not a huge fan of reliance on mediation. During a recent bout of bronchitis she was looking online for anything that might help, came across a salt spa and decided to try it out. She found it helped her and decided to open a spa of her own. This is her first business, having spent nearly thirty years in corporate sales working for airlines such as Lufthansa, KLM and Emirates. The theory and the technique is simple. A machine specially imported from Eastern Europe dispenses tiny particles of salt into dry air, which is moved around about by a fan within a simulated microclimate. The temperature and humidity is controlled for ultimate effect. You just you sit with your feet up and breathe it in. After an hour long session the room is ventilated for half an hour so it is clean for the next session, and that’s it. Matilda says she would never claim that users will be symptom free and that it is not intended as an alternative to medicine, but to complement it. She is planning to introduce yoga lessons at the spa to teach deep breathing exercises as well. If you’d like to try it out, the spa opens on 7th October at 5 London Rd., Brentford TW8 8JB and the initial session is free, so you can try it out before you book.

Charity BEGINS AT HOME
according to estate agent Paul Cooney
Estate agents are some of the least trusted people in the country, second only to politicians according to pollsters and not far below journalists and bankers. Paul Cooney is aiming to change that. Having opened the Chiswick branch of independent agents Horton & Garton six months ago, he’s on a mission to persuade people that the profession can make a positive contribution to their local community. Paul and his partner John Horton donate ten percent of their sales and letting fees to a local charity. The buyer or landlord decides on completion which charity the money will be given to. Among the beneficiaries in Chiswick so far have been St Peter's Church Chiswick, The Upper Room charity, which helps homeless people, local choirs the Petros Singers and the Addison Singers, Southfield Primary School Association, The Bumble Bee Conservation Trust and Chiswick House and Gardens Trust, where the estate agent sponsored a concert of classical music in June. Paul, who at 28 has already sold nearly £300 million worth of property in his career in Chiswick, is considered to be up and coming in the world of estate agency, having just won a clutch of trophies at the British Property Awards 2017. A ‘mystery shopper’ emailed and phoned W4 agents over a period of a month earlier in the year and found that Paul gave the best ‘customer experience’.

OMNIGENIUS Board games are making a comeback In an age where kids are glued to smartphones and tablets for entertainment, a family start-up company based in Isleworth is reintroducing the charm of board games. Shalin and Tressy Pinto set up the company two years ago, seeing the benefits to families of playing together: “As a parent, when you play board games with your kids, you get to spend a lot of time with them and teach them the importance of bonding together as a family”.
inventive, intelligent and productive”.
OMNI GENEius™ are innovators, coming up with ideas for family board games, strategy board games and toys, working both in London and Hong Kong. “We focus on encouraging ‘IQ’ advancements through creative play, with the aim of helping younger generations advance and become more
L@outandabout_mag
They say playing board games stimulates curiosity. It introduces children to the discipline of following rules, develops patience and encourages children to think proactively, as they are trained to anticipate the moves of the other players. Playing board games also helps children deal with failure – to see setbacks as stepping stones to success rather than disasters. “When you play board games with your kids, you get an opportunity to teach them that it is alright to lose in life sometimes. Kids will learn not to repeat their mistakes. These games will teach your kids to lose gracefully”.

They also maintain that children who are introduced to board games at an early age are better able to concentrate and that learning to work in tandem with other people teaches them to be good team players.
