It’s just three weeks until Christmas. There, I’ve said it. And I for one am unashamedly excited. I’ve always loved this time of year, but the magic and sparkle of Yuletide is reignited when you have children. Seen through their eyes, Christmas is full of wonder and joy and sometimes we could all do with a little bit of that magic.

EDITOR’S TIPS Gintastic No longer regarded as ‘Mother’s ruin’, gin is enjoying something of a resurgence. New botanical flavours and recipes are adding a touch of sophistication to the spirit. Ginsanity pop-up, The Olive Tree, Ashtead Garden Centre, Pleasure Pit Road, Ashtead, December 30, 7pm and 9pm, 01372 371188

As we countdown to the festivities we have a jam-packed edition sprinkled with places to go, things to do, and if you’re feeling crafty, things to make. We head to Kingswood’s new No12 restaurant where seasonal dishes using locally-sourced produce is top of the menu, find out about Epsom’s very own ‘School of Rock’ and uncover some of the treasures of one of Britain’s longlost gardens. We are also celebrating the achievements of the winners of the 2016 Epsom Business Excellence Awards. LONDON TO PARIS Charity cyclists conquer miles for Macmillan A team of cyclists clocked up the miles – and thousands of pounds in donations – by completing a charity bike ride to Paris. The eight-strong team, made up of staff from Ewell’s T Brown Group and Nuco Solutions, successfully completed the 240-mile route in October. Each of the team had their own reason for signing up for the epic challenge in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. After months of training, the team set off from Ewell, cycling 80 miles a day, until they crossed the finish line at the Eiffel Tower, Paris, three days later. So far their efforts have raised more than £2,700. You can donate to the cause via the team’s justgiving page at:

Cooking UP A STORM

Seasonal dishes dominate menu at No12

Gone are the days when you had to travel into London to experience fine dining.

three courses to a la carte dining featuring crisp confit pork belly and ribeye steak cooked on the grill.

A new crop of restaurants are opening across Surrey and those in the know are heading to No12 in Kingswood.

Restaurant manager Chris Lambert, who handpicked Marchant for the head chef role, said: “I had an idea of the sort of food I thought we should be serving here. I knew what I liked and I came up with a menu that I and the partners liked.

With head chef Jason Marchant at the helm in the kitchen, the emphasis is on seasonal dishes cooked with the highest quality ingredients. Marchant, who trained at Claridge’s, came to No12 after a stint at Northbank Restaurant near St Paul’s, London, where he spent six years, working his way up from sous chef to head chef. He is keen to promote small, independent British suppliers in his menus, sourcing produce from farms in Surrey and Sussex, and he continues to work with farmers in the Lake District, ensuring the provenance and quality of meat. Those dishes range from an express lunch menu of two to

“When I met Jason we hit it off immediately, we have the same way of thinking.” Looking ahead to its first Christmas, No12 will be catering for a sell-out Christmas Day lunch and will be welcoming in the new year with a special seven-course tasting menu, as well as entertainment and fireworks.

RECIPE COLLE

CTION

n Bread

Walnut & Raisi

Ingredients 500g strong white bread flour, plus a little extra flour for finishing 12g sachets fast-action dried yeast 2 tsp salt about 300ml tepid water (warm not cold – about body temperature) a little olive or sunflower oil Walnuts Raisins

Serves 10 | Takes 1 hour 30 Minutes | Easy

Method Put the flour into a large mixing bowl. Add the yeast at one side of the bowl and add the salt at the other, otherwise the salt will kill the yeast. Stir all the ingredients with a spoon to combine. Add the water and turn the mixture round with your fingers. Continue to add water a little at a time, combining well. Keep going until the mixture forms a rough dough. Now use your hands to knead the dough: push the dough out in one direction with the heel of your hand, then fold it back on itself. Turn the dough by 90 degrees and repeat. Kneading in this way stretches the gluten and makes the dough elastic. Allow the dough to prove in its bowl until it doubles in size. Line a baking tray with baking or silicone paper (not grease proof). Add the walnuts and the raisins and mould into to the desired shape, place on the baking sheet. Preheat the oven to 220C (200C fan assisted)/425F/Gas 7. Cook until it has a crispy base.

LOCAL BUSINESS - LIQUID GOLD

LIQUID

Enjoy a wee dram? With whisky sales on the up, out&about chats to Garry Milner about his new business venture

There is something of an art to finding the perfect whisky. No two malt whiskies are alike; different blends, distilling methods and flavours make each unique. Finding the one for you can take time, patience and a fair amount of tasting. And now there is a shop dedicated to just that in Ashtead. Stocking more than 65 different whiskies, Liquid Gold is something of a haven for those whose favourite tipple is a wee dram. Owner Garry Milner, who also runs Milners Carpets, is a keen collector and whisky connoisseur and saw an opportunity to combine his interest with a business. He said: “In Liquid Gold we are all collectors and whisky drinkers with more than 20 years between us. Although relatively new to collecting – I’ve only been collecting for three years – it is one of the best investments I have made. “We feel whisky makes a great alternative investment for those looking for something different, new and exciting.” Indeed the exclusivity of rare whiskies is attracting the attention of investors. Unlike more traditional forms of investment, like stocks and shares, which have experienced

L@outandabout_mag

fluctuating returns, whisky is on the up. In October, a 50-year-old bottle of whisky from the second release in the Glenlivet Winchester collection went on sale for £20,000. There are only 100 bottles of the whisky in the world, making it a prized investment for collectors. For those with an interest in collecting, the team at Liquid Gold can offer advice and help find rare or limited edition malts, as well as those from silent distilleries. The shop, which includes a licensed members’ bar, also stocks specialist gins, some lesser known liqueurs and cocktails, as well as glassware and gifts. Membership options are available carrying opportunities to invest in whisky and to learn more through tastings and events. Whisky tasting is one of the best parts of the job. For Garry, his favourite malt to date is the Glenrothes 1988, but that leaves plenty of time for exploring.

GUEST WRITER

TERRIBLE LIE An excerpt from Gareth Endean’s debut novel, a crime thriller set on the streets of Croydon Christopher watched out the window as Gatwick rose up to meet him. He hadn’t set foot in England for over 15 years. He’d been busy with work, of course, but he’d had holidays, breaks, plenty of chances really to jump on a plane and come home. But he’d never actually done it. He hadn’t ever had the urge, to be honest. When his parents complained about never getting to see him he had paid for their flights to come out to California. He’d been born and bred in Croydon, a town that dubbed itself a mini-Manhattan, and having now managed to visit New York, Christopher knew just how erroneous that claim was. He just felt no connection to his home town anymore. He had been entirely mercenary in his reasons for moving to America, you earn a hell of a lot more money in medical research in the States than you did back home. His reasons for returning however were much more emotive. And a lot less simple to explain. Christopher shook the thoughts from his head. What was the point of running away from something if you were just going to think about it the whole time? The plane hit the Tarmac with a jarring bump. Christopher placed his hand on the buckle of his seatbelt, he heard other passengers click off their harnesses, but Christopher let his hand rest on the metal clasp until the plane had slowed to a stop and the seatbelt light had pinged off. He waited while the passengers beside him had removed their baggage from the overhead locker and had wedged themselves into the queue in the aisle. Christopher, in no hurry, lifted himself out of the seat and plucked the small travel bag from the locker. He pulled his iPod from the bag and scrolled to The Deftones. Now was the time to revisit them.

and turned his head in time to catch the end of the sentence. It was enough though. The man was American, which was obvious from the accent, but to be honest the oversized hat and appalling shirt gave it away too. What on earth had made Christopher think that getting away from America would mean he could get away from Americans? Christopher hated the man on sight. It wasn’t enough that he had to perpetuate the myth that all Americans were loud, brash, unthinking idiots in bad clothes with no sense of selfawareness or how to behave in public, he also had to go and announce to the world who Christopher was in the worst possible way. The Aids Murder Guy. Terrible Lie is available to buy from Amazon in either ebook or paperback format. Gareth Endean is the first, foremost and only purveyor of Cronx Noir fiction. Born and raised in Croydon, when he’s not writing he’s thinking about writing. When he is writing he’s generally thinking about his record collection. Terrible Lie is his debut novel.

With his earphones jammed firmly into his ears he could block out the shoving, impatient mass that had so recently been his co-passengers. As he watched them jostle towards the plane doors, passing the perma-smiling stewardesses, his thoughts went back to his dream of B. The memories rolled around his head inspired by the music pumping through his headphones. His awareness of the outside world was almost non-existent. So much so that he wasn’t aware of the man moving up behind him, reaching towards him and clamping a firm hand on his shoulder. “…you’re that Aids murder guy!” Christopher had plucked one of his earphones out of his ear

THE HALLS Add a personal touch to your Christmas decorations with handmade garlands and wreaths

There’s something rather satisfying about making something from scratch. Perhaps that is why crafting is enjoying something of a renaissance – less ‘make do and mend’ and more of an individual style statement. If you want to add a personal touch to your home this Christmas then nothing beats crafting your own decorations.

Can’t make a workshop, here’s Alison Howe of Mad Lilies festive decorating tips:

Pick up a fresh blue spruce wreath from a good florist shop which you can decorate yourself. Items including ribbon, foliage, pine cones and pins can all be picked up at the same time.

Mad Lilies florists, in Banstead, is running a series of workshops where you can get creative and learn new floristry skills.

Or go for a walk in your garden or the woods and look for berries, crab apples, nuts and pine cones to use.

Suitable for all levels, including novices, there will be fresh flowers and foliage to work with, as well as ribbons, berries, fruits and other natural materials.

Look on sites like Instagram and Pinterest for inspiration on how to decorate your wreath or garland. Natural looking wreaths work well, it’s all about bringing the outdoors indoors.

Complimentary mince pies and some Mad Lilies hot port will be available for sustenance and to aid the design process, and at the end of the session you can take home your finished decoration.

If you want to bling it up a bit then you can look at Christmas decorations or go for a take on this year’s trend for metallics by adding golds, silvers, platinum and bronzes.

Learn to make a natural Christmas wreath, a beautiful fireplace garland or floral table designs.

For an added wow factor, wrap battery-powered fairy lights around the wreath which can be switched on in the evenings to greet visitors.

Workshops run until December 8 and cost £65, payable at time of booking. Arrive at 7pm for a 7.15pm start.

If you are looking at table centre pieces for Christmas firstly think about the shape of your table. For long tables opt for a long, skinny table piece. Round displays are suited to circular tables. With so much going on and space at a premium, keep table pieces simple.

SCHOOL OF ROCK Musicians get ready to thrill in annual Christmas showcase There aren’t many times where you see children keen to attend lessons after school and at weekends. But that’s the case at Epsom’s Realistic Music Academy where children as young as four are cutting their teeth learning to play instruments. Formed by brothers Robin and Richard Henderson in 2004, the music academy initially started with them teaching guitar and drums from their parents’ house. In just over a decade the academy has flourished and now offers private and group tuition in guitar, drums, bass, vocals and keyboard, lessons in music production, as well as live performance workshops and band coaching. It is the latter where Realistic has a strong track record of spotting and developing musical talent, with success coaching bands including The Tones, who toured with the Specials last year, and punk-rock four-piece The Flaming Monkeys who, among other things, supported the Kaiser Chiefs at the XFM Winter Wonderland.

Robin said: “You get taught music in schools. We have a different approach, a more contemporary approach. “It is quite rewarding. We have a few bands to keep an eye on for the future.” The annual Christmas showcase is an opportunity for all students to perform on stage – from the youngest through to adults on the Remastered course who are just starting out or getting back into music after a break. Tim Miles from Warner Records will be judging and giving feedback to the coached bands on the night and there will also be a competition. Realistic Music Academy runs term–time workshops and stages regular events and open days throughout the year. Find them at 81 East Street, Epsom, 01372 740300, www.realisticmusicacademy.com

travel posters of the past, capturing sights that might more often be viewed now on a social media post.

Travel posters enticed people to board a train, steam liner or plane and visit new destinations with striking, colourful images that oozed glamour.

Having initially tested out a handful of images as prints, Susie soon had people requesting prints of different places. She has recently added her 46th print of Guildford Cathedral to the collection.

In a nod to the golden age of travel, Leatherhead artist Susie West has created her own range of prints of familiar landmarks and locations.

“Sometimes I add one to the collection because I have a fair coming up, but I also have a list where people suggest where they would like me to go next.

Travelling the length and breadth of the country, her prints of villages, towns and cities are a contemporary twist on the

“You get to see the most wonderful parts of the country. I can go from one day doing a little village like Westcott, near Dorking, to Battersea power station or the middle of a town.” “I have always absolutely adored travel posters. They cover such a huge period of time and they differ in style.” But Susie says the reason the prints are so popular today is not so much travel and more to do with nostalgia. “People buy them because they live there, they used to live there, they went to university there or they had their first house there. They evoke a place.” Her next four prints will cover Peaslake, Shere, Chester and Surbiton, to take the tally up to 50 by Christmas. After that the list includes destinations from the south-west – Bristol and Bath – to Edinburgh. “It’s quite a limitless job. A Wikipedia search said there were 48,000 plus villages, towns and cities in the UK – it should keep us going for a while.” Susie’s prints are on sale at Eden, in Leatherhead, and she will also have a stall at the Swan Centre Market, Leatherhead, on December 10.

DEEPDENE TRAIL

Deepdene’s TREASURES

Venture off the beaten track and explore the delights of one of Britain’s ‘lost’ gardens

In the 19th century, the Deepdene estate was the very epitome of fashion. Owned by the banker, art collector and designer Thomas Hope, the neoclassical mansion and sprawling estate once stretched from Dorking to Brockham and Betchworth. Described by statesman and writer Benjamin Disraeli as “the most perfect Italian palace you can conceive”, Hope’s country estate was frequented by the rich and famous of the time. The Italianate gardens, believed to be one of the earliest examples of the style and dating back to the mid-17th century, helped shape garden taste and design in this country.

In 1807, Hope, considered to be one of Europe’s richest men, bought Deepdene. A decade later work began to remodel the mansion house and parkland. The house was remodelled so that it connected with the landscape of the Deepdene and the grounds expanded as Hope bought neighbouring plots of land. He constructed a mausoleum for his youngest son Charles, who died aged seven, and later a temple on Deepdene Terrace, the high point of the park, in his brother’s honour. On his death in 1831, the estate was inherited by Hope’s eldest son, Henry Thomas, who further remodelled the house and expanded the grounds. By the end of the 19th century the Deepdene estate measured nearly 12 miles in circumference. The house was leased to the dowager Duchess of Marlborough, aunt of Winston Churchill, for a number of years. After her death in 1909, the house and estate began to be broken up and sold for development. Many of the collections Hope had amassed were lost. The temple was demolished in 1955 and the family mausoleum was buried to roof level to protect it from vandals.

DEEPDENE TRAIL

The neoclassical mansion, now long gone, was demolished in 1969 after years of decline, and the garden and parkland, no longer tended, became overgrown, unloved and largely forgotten. That is until last year when a £1million Heritage Lottery grant was awarded to Mole Valley District Council’s Hope Springs Eternal project.

The project set out to reclaim the once-magnificent Deepdene Estate and create a series of trails around the estate. The funding enabled a dedicated team to start work clearing the overgrown grounds and restoring the remaining features of the landscape. They uncovered some of the original paths and vistas of the previously hidden landscape and uncovered the family mausoleum, buried under earth since 1960, which, remarkably, had been largely preserved. The Neo-Grecian tomb has been restored and inside will sit a replica of the settee, designed by Thomas Hope, for visitors to enjoy. The result is a trail on newly reinstated paths among the reclaimed Italianate gardens, and a nine-mile trail through the original estate providing stunning views of the village of

CARE AT HOME Range of services offered by mobile vet Many owners and pets dread the traditional trip to the vets whether that be for routine or non-routine appointments. Having spent many years working in a very busy practice I came to realise just how stressful and difficult this can be for both owners and animals. This is why I started Surrey Home Vet – to provide the care your pet needs in the comfort of their own, familiar surroundings. People are often surprised at how many things I can do on a house visit – from clipping your cat’s nails to vaccinations, dressing changes, blood tests or post-op checks. Sometimes we can do more with an animal at home when they are less stressed, than we can in a clinic. When needed, I can transport them to Winton Lodge Vets for advanced diagnostic tests, surgery and treatment. Winton Lodge is run by my husband Simon Neuhoff and a fantastic team of vets, nurses and receptionists. I have been a practicing veterinarian for more than 20 years. Apart from a love for dogs, I have a special interest in all

things feline and was awarded the European Certificate in Feline Medicine in 2007. I also enjoy advanced dentistry, geriatric medicine, delicate soft tissue surgeries and cardiac ultrasound.

Surrey Home Vet is an independently owned, mobile veterinary clinic offering visits in the local area. Run by local vet Claire Neuhoff, I provide first rate veterinary care for your pets in the comfort of your own home. My guiding principle is that I offer the same level of care I would want for my own pets. Should your pet need surgical or diagnostic procedures I have the backup of a modern, fully equipped surgery and can therefore provide for every aspect of your pet’s care. 07872 042 047 | info@surreyhomevet.co.uk www.surreyhomevet.co.uk

SCHOOLS

THE BEST POSSIBLE START St Christopher’s offers a creative and supportive environment in which pupils flourish St Christopher’s School, Epsom, gives its pupils “The best possible start to their education”, according to our inspection in February 2016. This delightful pre prep school for boys and girls aged from three to seven was awarded top marks in every one of the eight areas inspected and the inspection report can be read in detail on the school website. It celebrates the success of the school’s aim to provide irresistible learning opportunities and marvels at the range of challenging opportunities that permeate the school day. This is a school where everyone succeeds and pupils of all ages make excellent progress. Happiness is key and an experienced and talented staff provide a creative and supportive environment in which pupils can flourish. In addition to academic excellence the pupils’ artwork is

There is a superb range of sporting clubs and year 2 enjoy match fixtures for football and netball. The school is able to offer a number of financial bursaries.

No longer are lessons confined to the classroom. out&about heads outdoors to discover how children are learning life skills through play If you go down to the woods today you will hear the sound of laughter and the hubbub of children excitedly chatting as they take part in an outdoor lesson. There is no formal lesson plan, no desks or whiteboard. Instead the children are free to roam, explore, discover, use their imaginations and play, whatever the weather. This approach to outdoor learning follows the Scandinavian ‘forest school’ model, developed in the 1950s.

Christopher Pryke, a trained forest school leader who runs Down in the Woods, at Warren Farm, Cheam, said: “The basis is that it is child-led. When we are planning a session for the children I ask what topics they have been doing in class or what they are interested in and try and incorporate that into the sessions. “For kinesthetic learners – those who learn by doing – we try to incorporate hands-on stuff because it enables them to learn better and to learn faster.” “The other thing that forest school does differently to a conventional classroom is it allows children to play outdoors from an early age. “It helps them communicate, to work as a team, to learn how to resolve issues through communication. It also helps them to learn their own limits and how to take risks.”

Research has found that children attending forest schools started school with strong social skills, self-confidence and

HOLISTIC APPROACH Preparation for grammar and independent schools’ tests at 11+. Common Entrance at 11+ and 13+ Summer Intensive Course Selected subjects to GCSE Small group sessions, providing a caring learning environment with a focus on individual needs and aspirations.

When it comes to our children’s education, most of us take the responsibility seriously: we want the best for them and we will do whatever it takes. Tutoring no longer has the negative association with ‘being no good’ at a subject, but is increasingly seen as a positive enhancement to a child’s learning. Moreover, a personalised approach helps develop skills in individuals to enable them to overcome difficulties in their learning, so they achieve great results in their schoolwork, exams and life. What should I look for in a tutor?

The first thing to establish is compatibility. Are you, your child and the tutor on the same wavelength? Do you have common goals? Does the tutor provide a service that is tailored to your child’s style of learning? There are many tutors and tutoring agencies that simply work with pupils in fairly large groups, doing paper after paper without actually teaching.
