EDITOR'S LETTER
Welcome Spring is on its way.
Some might say January and February are the hardest months of the year but now they are behind us, we are seeing a few tantalising glimpses that spring is on its way.
The afternoons seem a little longer and there are stirrings in the garden as new shoots of plant life emerge. Spring, in all its colourful glory, is often seen as a time of rejuvenation and in Ewell the change in seasons will once again be marked at the Herald of Spring festival. There’s a touch of magic about this year’s celebration which takes place on March 7. If you’re a keen gardener we also have some essential tips from Doug, the Outdoor Plants Manager at
Chessington Garden Centre to help you prepare your garden for spring and summer. P15. If you want to treat your mother, or someone special in your life this Mothering Sunday, we have a wonderful selection of ideas to say thank you to her for being so great. P10. Following a successful petition to Sutton Council, Carshalton Netball Club have been given the go ahead to help repurpose two of five Tennis Courts in Carshalton Park. P26. HORTON COUNTRY PARK
Ramble ON
Over 4,300 metres of footpaths in Horton County Park have now been resurfaced, funded by contributions from the Community Infrastructure Levy, money raised from developers as part of the planning permission for developments within the borough. Community groups, supported by councillors, can apply for the funding of local schemes to benefit their community.
Prior to restoration, the paths’ surface was in a poor state and in wet weather became very muddy, riddled with large puddles and in places the hard core base layer was protruding.
smooth out and will last for many years with minimal maintenance. Councillor Eber Kington, Chairman of the Strategy & Resources Committee, said “Local Councillors nominated projects for funding in their respective wards based on discussion with local people and I am delighted by the success of this scheme which will contribute to the physical and mental wellbeing of local residents by ensuring that they can continue to access the park to unwind, enjoy the outdoors and undertake a safe and enjoyable walk”
Limestone scalpings, off-cuts or shards created by dressing stone for building work and from quarry waste, were used to resurface the paths. The use of this material for off road countryside routes is standard, providing a stable, long lasting and hard wearing surface suitable for pedestrians with stout footwear, all terrain push chairs and wheelchairs, mountain bikes and horses. ‘THE JOURNEY IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE DESTINATION’ Declares local artist Joe Norris “I have to thank my mother for encouraging me to journey into art. She gave me her Rowney watercolour paint box and her cherished sable brush when I was ten and showed me how to paint simple washes”, he begins. It was a visit to Amsterdam that really inspired Joe, marvelling at paintings by Rembrandt and Vermeer. Later, he took inspiration from Van Gogh, Dali, Duchamp and Picasso. “I am fascinated by eccentricity, seeing it as a sign of genius and something to be admired,”.
impressionistic styles, was a real joy. I have always been as interested in the process and the inspiration behind the work as I have in the final piece.” Joe concludes, “I never stop learning and the most important thing for me is to continue painting and to develop my own style. I have often found the journey more rewarding than the destination itself.”
During those early days, Joe recalls painting a snow scene of a family friend’s house. “I remember feeling pleased with my efforts but was amazed when I’d learnt that she had liked it enough to hang it on her wall! I was really proud to be asked, and paid, to paint pictures for people I’d never met, who had seen my work displayed in local pubs and restaurants - real commissions!”. Several years of formal art education followed, although Joe admits to often finding art gallery visits intimidating, “…but to actually see the brushstrokes close up and feel the energy and passion of some of my favourite artists, like Rembrandt, Monet and Turner, with their

Gardener’s NOTES
Doug, Outdoor Plants Manager at Chessington Garden Centre writes; Spring is finally arriving and gardens are beginning to look full of colour, especially with the appearance of sunny yellow daffodils. Call me sad but with the clock going forward at the end of March it really is an exciting time of year. Longer days equals longer hours I can be outside. For me it is a really good incentive to get outside and start on some gardening tasks. Whether its mulching, pruning, taking cuttings or preparing the seeds beds, I am always looking for a new job in the garden and I hope some of these useful tips get you started. This month is the ideal time for making seedbeds for sowing. Once you have broken down any lumps in the soil, you could apply an organic fertiliser about two weeks before sowing. Rake this in and even out any hollows and bumps and the seedbed is ready for seeds. Start your tomatoes, aubergines and peppers this month. You can also succession sow lettuce, cabbage and cauliflower in March. You could even experiment with mixing some vegetables in with your herbaceous borders. While I do love sowing seeds and looking forward to some fresh herbs and vegetables you really cannot forget about the other more beautiful aspects of your garden. Give your roses the perfect
start, hybrid tea, floribunda and climbing roses benefit from pruning during early March. After pruning, spray with an insecticide and fungicide to protect against future problems. Then feed with a granular rose fertiliser to ensure a mass of perfect blooms this summer and mulch with composter bark or well-rotted manure. Some of your daffodils may be going over towards the end of March. Deadhead as many as you can so that all the plants energy goes back into the bulb, ready to produce more flowers for next year. However, do leave the foliage intact. Now is also a good time to trim perennials such as lavender to avoid overgrowth, while making sure you keep them compact to encourage a healthy growth & additional fragrant flowers. If you are anything like me then then you can feel a little exhausted after the winter months. Plants that have been in your greenhouse are no different and you will notice their compost will be looking a little bit tired, do remember to feed or repot them. With longer warmer days (hopefully) in April we start to see stronger sunshine and our gardens start to come alive. With the views from your window ever changing you will start to see plants unfurl and push along the soil, adding colour and vibrancy to your garden.

OF
Italian LIFE
AT 2 BEECHES AVENUE GASTROVINARIA
Vinoteca Italiana has been a staple in Carshalton Beeches for more than six years, offering authentic Italian cooking in a home from home setting. Now husband and wife team Gianni and Hana Quartulli are taking their recipe for success and applying it to their latest business venture – 2 Beeches Avenue, an Italian Gastrovinaria. They have taken over the adjoining premises to the restaurant and opened the Gastrovinaria, which is also the perfect spot for coffee and a pastry – when we say coffee, we mean only the best Italian coffee, rich and intense, made with Napoli’s finest coffee beans – and to while away time enjoying the company of family and friends. Brunch is served from 10am and includes classics such as Egg Benedict and Egg Florentine, there is also a lunchtime menu featuring fresh, colourful salads,
sandwiches, delectable Arancini – homemade stuffed rice balls filled with beef ragu – as well as heartier dishes. Early evening visitors can feast on a platter of antipasto, a selection of Italian cured meats and cheeses, olives and rustic bread, which goes perfectly with a glass of wine. Gianni and Hana embrace the philosophy that Italians live to eat, not eat to live, so the Gastrovinaria is a place of discovery with new and tasty treats to savour on the premises or to take away to enjoy at home. They have regular themed nights such as Steakhouse night, Lobster & Seafood or Tapas & Wine which are well worth a visit. Passionate about all things Italian cuisine, Gianni and Hana have sourced produce from across Italy. Their range of wines from around the world includes many small, regional producers not normally found on supermarket shelves. 2 Beeches Avenue is hosting a Winemakers Dinner with paired wines. See their website for more information.

A couple of testimonials from our lovely customers: ‘Apart from the wonderful cheeses and charcuteries on sale from the delicatessen counter, this place offers a wonderful atmosphere and excellent food and wine to be enjoyed over lunch… I had a fantastic pasta dish and a glass of wine and my friend had one of their delicious soups…’ ‘I have been to this place a few times now and it’s a good venue for meeting the girls for lunch - this is the place! The venue and decor is very continental and more upmarket than you’ll expect from a cafe in the suburbs of Carshalton (which is good).’

Oddities
A BUNCH OF
The Gage Players are an amateur drama group in Walton-on-the-Hill. This Spring they present a funny new play called ‘Molly’s Calling’. Molly’s Calling is a comedy about a bunch of oddities who take on the world and knock some sense into it. But don’t pass them off as cranks. Their machinations are remarkably successful, managing to keep the Russian menace at bay and promising to create a country like the Good Old Days. It’s set in a

SUTTON SYMPHONY
Orchestra
Spring Concert showcases local composer and soloists. Sutton Symphony Orchestra returns to St Andrew’s URC Cheam on Saturday 28th March with much to celebrate in a concert featuring a new commission written specially for the orchestra and the final of Sutton Music Service’s Young Musician of the Year competition. All this plus an epic symphony more than adequately answers the question on everyone’s lips since their summer concert - “how do you follow Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite?” Firstly enjoy Carshalton-born composer David Hackbridge
Johnson’s commission for Sutton Symphony Orchestra “River Wandle Suite” which is in five movements and takes us along the Wandle from Carshalton Ponds, past the water grasses and mills into a rousing fugue of a finale. Next up, three talented members of the Borough’s Youth Music Service will be showcasing their skills. Elgar’s 1st Symphony forms the second half of the concert – around 50 minutes of epic scoring of music that is noble, passionate, intense, lyrical, and very grand.

CARSHALTON NETBALL CLUB
CARSHALTON
Netball CLUB Following a successful petition to Sutton Council, Carshalton Netball Club have been given the go ahead to help repurpose two of five Tennis Courts in Carshalton Park.
Netball has surged in popularity in recent years and a recent Sport England survey showed that a whopping 319,400 adults now play Netball fortnightly. Carshalton Netball Club in Surrey are just 50 of those adults who have picked up the ball and rekindled their love of Netball. Local resident, Mairéad Agnew, formed Carshalton Netball Club back in 2018 when she asked if anyone wanted to join her to play Netball, ‘just for fun’, in her local park. The response was overwhelming and highlighted an interest in casual, non-committal Netball. This relaxed approach has seen notable health and general wellbeing benefits for those playing as well as a greater sense of community to all involved. The team have been unable to find any outdoor, free to use courts to play on and have seen the opportunity to open up access to young girls and women to play Netball more casually. Their mission is to address this by having a free to use, full size Netball Court available to all. Whilst there are a great number of free to use Tennis, Basketball, Football and other sports courts across the
Carshalton Park as it is now
Mairéad Agnew & Julie Smith who recently pitched to raise funds for the new court at Suttons version of Dragons Den, Sutton Soup. borough the provision of free to use Netball courts does not match the growing desire to play the sport. After a very successful petition led by the Netball Team, Sutton council have granted permission to repurpose two of five Tennis courts in Carshalton Park however there is no budget to pay for this so the team are helping to fundraise. Here you can see the courts as they are now and an example of the redevelopment plans. The plans will not only include a free to use netball court but also a second multi-use games area for other sports including football and basketball. Depending on how much is raised the tennis courts will hopefully get a facelift too!!
If you are a local resident or businesses and you can help donate any amount from £2 to £2,000 or indeed more, then please kindly donate via the Crowdfunding page below. You can keep up to date on the project or find out more via Carshalton Netball’s social media.

HEALTH & WELLBEING
Pilates
FOR WELLNESS Amanda Rowley chats to Mel Cozens, a local Pilates teacher about the benefits of Pilates.
Leg Pull Front
Bridging
Shoulder Bridge
What is Pilates?
Pilates for Wellness
Pilates is an exercise programme developed to build strength, flexibility and coordination.
The Pilates repertoire is vast, including work on large apparatus as well as the more accessible Mat work. A typical contemporary Pilates mat session starts with Breathing, providing an opportunity to bring awareness to self and calm the nervous system.
Pilates in the 21st century is diverse in style. It is mostly categorized by Modern or Classical in approach with Classical Pilates being more closely derived from Joseph Pilates’ original regime Contrology. Born in 1880 in Monchengladbach, Germany Joseph Pilates was a sickly child diagnosed with asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever. This provoked an interest in health and fitness and led him to train in gymnastics and boxing. The birth of Contrology came at the outbreak of WW1 when he was interned in the United Kingdom during the war. It is during this time that he helped maintain the health and physical wellbeing of his fellow inmates using bed springs to create resistance to his movements. By the 1960’s having taken up residence in New York alongside the home of the New York City ballet, Joseph and his wife Clara’s exercise regime, now termed Pilates, was gaining popularity. Photography credit: Reel Feel Productions
Pre-Pilates moves such as Bridging progress to more challenging movements such as Hundred, Leg Pull Front and Shoulder Bridge. The complexity of each movement increases in their orientation to gravity and base of support throughout each session. You can expect to lay supine, on your side, be seated and lay prone. Classwork gradually moves away from the floor to finish upright in a standing position. Distributing movement evenly throughout the spine is at the heart of each exercise. Pilates is practice as much for the mind as it is for the body. Collectively, the exercises counteract imbalances and asymmetries within the body, improving spinal mobility and developing the mind-body connection. Classes promote joint mobility and develop body awareness; the latter being the key to a physical selfawareness that can be taken into everyday activities.
Mel Cozens of MelPilates runs Pilates classes in Banstead and Old Coulsdon. Find her on Instagram @melcozens and Facebook @MelPilates

Justice
Nicky Charlish, a freelance journalist based in Carshalton, publishes her first e-book crime novel Nicky Charlish is a freelance journalist and has contributed to, among other publications, Record Mirror, Melody Maker, Ms. London, Girl-About-Town, Midweek and 3am magazine. Gender Justice is Nicky’s first book. Nicky tells us about her book: ‘Toni, 20, transgender and raised on a tough south London council estate, is just out of prison after a two-year sentence. Her crime? Attacking her mum’s would-be rapist. Determined to better herself,
Toni works in a London graphic designer’s office whilst awaiting the surgery that – she hopes – will complete her female transformation and help to change her life for the better. A meeting with an old prison friend leads to Toni also working part-time at a gay bar in Old Compton Street. But that – and a gangland war which leads to the past catching up with her – threatens to destroy Toni’s dream as violence explodes in the streets of Soho and Shoreditch.’
