THE BURGER CLUB

THE

Burger CLUB

A burger from The Burger Club is hard to beat! The newest restaurant to open on Banstead high street is the delicious Burger Club. It’s hard to fault the restaurant with its rustic brown leather seats and friendly, approachable staff. With great service and vast amount of choice on the menu it always makes for a great meal – and the signature sauce is delicious. The Burger Club opened on Banstead High Street in June 2020 and has come as a much-needed breath of fresh air for local area residents. Touted as the ‘perfect addition’ to the High Street, it has already amassed a loyal customer base of repeat visitors and a 5-star rating on Google, Facebook and Trip advisor. Each burger is lovingly handcrafted using 100% grass-fed British beef and the flavours are taken to new heights by the addition of unique, complimentary tastes and textures. Not only are the burgers delicious but the sides and chicken wings are not to be missed! They also offer a refreshing range of ice cream and sprinkles for anyone with room for dessert. The brainchild behind The Burger Club is Sana Zehra. The restaurant prides itself on being family owned and an integral part of the Banstead community. Sana has perfected the signature recipes for every burger, entre, and side on the menu with a simple philosophy; to bring fresh and wholesome ingredients together for one reason – maximum flavour.

Future Plans: The Burger Club’s main focus remains on serving their customers to the best of their abilities during these uncertain times. In the future they plan on adding specials to the menu and extending the variety to include gluten free and cater for other food intolerances. They also hope to expand to other towns with more restaurants while maintaining their high standards.

DIFFERENT WAYS TO USE A PUMPKIN

Creative

HALLOWEEN IDEAS Different ways to use pumpkin by Pia Talbot

Seasonal changes are always exciting and one of the reasons why is the fresh new food you can incorporate into your life, and what is more of a staple Halloween treat than the humble pumpkin? Whether you like to carve it, use it as a decoration, or put it into delicious recipes, there are so many versatile ways to add it into your autumnal life.

Pumpkin Pancakes

Seed Art

Some people like to celebrate Halloween, some don’t, but making tasty autumn themed breakfasts can always be on the menu. With only 20 minutes of your time needed, this is such an easy morning meal. Check online for the best recipe for you and have your choice between making pumpkin purée from scratch or buying it made from the shops.

For some fun Halloween themed arts and crafts to do with the kids, creating pictures from pumpkin seeds is a unique and inventive way to be artistic. Just start by dying some dry seeds whatever colours you like, and you will be creating a magical art piece. Try visiting Pullingers art shop in Epsom for everything you need for your crafts to be even better.

Face Masks

Decorations

Doing most things DIY for the last few months has become pretty normal, and with beauty salons still not open for every treatment, this pumpkin face mask will do wonders for your skin. Just by adding your fresh pumpkin puree with a spice or two that you love and mixing in some honey, will give your skin the nutrients that it needs to glow.

Pumpkin Soup If you are more of a savoury than sweet person, making a delicious tummy warming autumnal soup to enjoy on those cold October days is the way to go. There are so many recipes to choose from, and you can customise your own with whatever toppings/add ins you like. Lunch or dinner, this is a recipe everyone will enjoy.

8

This is definitely the most obvious one but using pumpkins as autumn/Halloween decorations is perfect! Whether it be carving them or drawing on them, there are endless possibilities for them to brighten up (or spooky up) your home. One of the best places to go pumpkin picking is Garson’s Farm in Esher where they have a great pumpkin patch.

CARSHALTON LAVENDER

CARSHALTON

Lavender

Bring a sense of summer into your home this autumn by Lizzie Flynn

Carshalton Lavender is an award-winning heritage community project, and London’s only Pick Your Own Lavender event.

If, like us you’ve picked some beautiful lavender for your home this harvest, here are some ideas to make it last well into the autumn months:

It opened its gates to the public for its 21st Pick Your Own Mini Harvests in August which enabled visitors to see the stalls selling the unique Carshalton Lavender essential oil, floral water, lavender crafts, lavender plants and locally handmade skincare. The lavender harvest is always an excellent opportunity for taking photos of friends and family in a beautiful outdoor setting, and this year was no exception.

• Create a beautiful floral decoration for your home using dried lavender placed in beautiful cups, mugs and vases.

Lavender is a plant that offers several uses and is wellknown as a scent that can help relax the senses and reduce the feeling of anxiousness. When dried, lavender maintains its soothing aroma and can be used for all kinds of home remedies, crafts, beauty products and even in food.

• Culinary use - did you know dried lavender can be used in many recipes and will give your dishes a real wow factor. • Dry your lavender and hang in bunches to help scent rooms and linen. • As the nights draw in, why not create autumn or Christmas gifts such as lavender bags, paper, pouches, candles, door stops and pillows. • Use the lavender oil to make handmade soaps, creams and lotions.

All Carshalton Heritage Lavender products contain essential oils harvested from the field. If you missed out on this year’s Harvest Weekend, other ways of obtaining products are noted on their website, where a small number of official stockists and producers who use the oil in their products are listed.

How to get involved The project is run solely by volunteers, and proceeds from this harvest event keep the project running from year to year.

Visit www.carshaltonlavender.org for details of how to volunteer this autumn Follow on Twitter @lavendersm5 or Facebook @carshaltonlavender

WILD FOOD UK

Foraging AUTUMN

Discover Autumn’s abundance of edible plants and mushrooms Food UK grew from a genuine love of the great outdoors and a passion for food, combining both walks in the woods and by the seaside into genuine treasure hunts.

What is Wild Food UK? Wild Food UK have a genuine love of wild British food. There is an abundance of edible plants and mushrooms that grow in the UK, and knowing what you can and cannot eat from your local woods will enhance your walks as well as your diet. Much of what you can pick in the UK whilst foraging would be considered food for fine dining, and often beyond a normal household budget. So why not learn how to find it for free? Learn how to forage it, cook it, dry it, prepare it, store it and eat it! Wild

Wild Food UK was formed a few years ago by Marlow and Eric driven by a desire to expand peoples experience of nature into a practical source of enjoyment. Since then the company has grown in course leaders and course locations, covering most of the UK. Their aim is to educate people about tasty edible wild plants, mushrooms, fruits, roots and flowers that they think everyone should be able to identify, pick and eat with confidence.

“We’re extremely lucky in Britain to have a climate that provides us plenty of food all year round, all you need to know is how to find it. We teach these “skills for life”; and we believe that with the skills we teach, every life will be enhanced. Not only is foraging fun and interesting; you never know when being able to pick your own food might come in genuinely useful or even life saving!”

FORAGING IN WOODMANSTERNE From now until Saturday 24th October Wild Food UK is offering you the chance to enjoy a 2.5 hour foraging walk, starting and ending at the Woodman pub. The course starts with a short introduction on what to look for, their foraging code and a brief

of the Countryside Act, where it relates to foraging. Then you’ll set off on a roughly 2.5 hour walk around Woodmansterne, teaching you how to identify the different plants, flowers, fruits and mushrooms that you may find.

Stop along the way for some seasonal homemade refreshments, such as their lovely hogweed and wild garlic soup, elderflower champagne or fruit leathers. After the walk, the day ends with a tasty wild food lunch based on what has been found.

THE LITTLE BAKING PROJECT

Delicious

SWEET TREATS From the Little Baking Project

Fancy some home made tray bakes? Lovely chocolaty fudgy brownies maybe? Nice chewy flapjacks? Can’t be bothered to make them yourself ? Help is at hand. Haley Ryan has just set up The Little Baking Project, taking orders through her Instagram @thelittlebakingproject and Facebook pages ‘making life a little bit better one traybake at a time’. Haley works in the public sector but has always enjoyed baking, and makes all sorts of goodies for her husband Michael and their three children Mia (12), Thomas (4) and Matilda (1).

During the last few months when life has been so grim, she’s decided to branch out and try something different, selling her tray bakes to the Cafe Chai in Banstead but also to individual customers online. She has registered as a food business but is not able to cater for allergies, as her home kitchen is not nut free. So if you fancy some brownies, blondies, flapjacks or cookies and you’re in the Banstead area, Haley’s your woman. As endorsed by Michael, Mia, Thomas and Matilda!

HERITAGE OPEN DAYS

Heritage OPEN

DAYS

Experience local history, architecture and culture. All for free during Heritage Open Days. England’s largest festival of history and culture will return this year and support from players of People’s Postcode Lottery means as well as experiencing local events, visitors can participate in activities much further afield and see even more hidden places. For the first time, the Heritage Open Days (HODs) programme will comprise a mix of in-person and digital events; communities will be able to celebrate the stories of the places and spaces that are important to them while staying safe and adhering to current social distancing measures. Every year around 50,000 volunteers give their time and effort to help create the largest cultural grassroots festival in the country. Last year 5,700 events were organised which welcomed more than 2.4 million visitors. This autumn, some venues and outdoor spaces will open for pre-booked events and visits by small groups, while others will offer virtual tours and digital experiences. This year’s theme is Hidden Nature, which offers an opportunity to discover the nature that exists on our doorsteps, as well as the built heritage. Areas of the

24

countryside that aren’t normally accessible to the public will be opened up and events will reveal the hidden history of not just our natural landscapes, but also gardens, green spaces, urban parks, orchards, vineyards, farms and forests. Annie Reilly, Head of Producing, said: “Over the last couple of months, with time outdoors being limited, access to nature has become even more important to many of us and HODs will give us all something to look forward to. From socially distanced ‘netwalking’ and rural rambles, to nature-inspired art collections, scavenger hunts, food and craft events – we’re excited to see how the theme of ‘Hidden Nature’ is interpreted and used to create exciting online and offline events and activities.” Heritage Open Days is coordinated and promoted nationally by the National Trust with support from players of People’s Postcode Lottery. Every single Heritage Open Days event is free, including access to many sites that usually charge for admission.
