Jet De la Isla: A Visionary Entrepreneur
AS AN ‘ARTIST OF BUSINESS’, JET SEES THE WORLD AS A BLANK CANVAS, READY FOR HIS BRUSH
BY GUSTAVO SILVA
In Puerto Vallarta, where the ocean meets the jungle, Jet De la Isla stands out as a pioneering force in the LGBTQ+ tourism industry. With a diverse portfolio of businesses that include a clothing-optional beach, the highest rated LGBT+ boat charter company on TripAdvisor, Mexico’s first gay youth hostel, founder of the largest online gay community Facebook group, a new mezcal beach bar, and as a board of director for the new LGBTQ+ community center, Jet has carved a niche for himself in this tropical paradise.
He’s a busy man - both professionally and personally. His mind never stops working on the next idea, and he’s excited about growing the Vallarta LGBTQ+ community.
O&APV wanted to know who Jet De La Isla is and what motivates him? He was kind enough to find time in his exhausting schedule to give us insight into his life.
Q: JET, YOU'VE BECOME A WELL-
KNOWN FIGURE IN VALLARTA'S LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY. WHAT MOTIVATES YOU EVERYDAY? WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THOSE YOUNG QUEER ENTREPRENEURS?
A: What excites me and gets me going is being in a creative space. I always wanted to be an artist growing up and now I see myself as an artist of business. With the world as my canvas. I like to put up ideas and see what sticks. I have a lot of crazy ideas in my head and it’s fun to see how people react and support my ideas. For the young queer community I would tell them to do the same. As in, throw your creativity out there for the world to see. If it’s something that brings out fear for rejection or judgment. Then you’re on the right track. Try something new. You’ve got nothing to lose.
Q: HOW DO YOU MANAGE YOUR TIME? YOU HAVE A LOT GOING ON.
A: It’s funny because I ask myself this pretty often. I don’t happen to find the time of day needed to finish my work. I used to reject
the idea of working all day and all night but lately it’s been something I have really gotten leaned into. I find things I love to do and do them literally all day doing them. I even dream of my work. Jaja - I know that’s not for everyone but I really enjoy the things I do and I put all my energy behind it. And when I really need a break I love traveling for breaks even if that’s to somewhere near like Yelapa or to an exotic destination across the world.
Q: YOU LOVE TO TRAVEL. WHAT IS THE MOST FAVORITE PLACE IN THE WORLD THAT YOU’VE BEEN TO?
A: Lately I’ve loved exploring Latin america. Colombia, Brazil and hopefully Venezuela eventually. It’s honestly where my favorite men come from and it’s been an enriching experience to make friends, taste the local food and check out the sites in my favorite parts of the world. I, like many, used to be afraid of traveling in Latin America because of the rumors but it’s been a very safe and fun experience. Contrary to popular belief.
But favorites - favorites I would say: Kenya, Japan, Nepal, Italy, Colombia and Mexico of course.
Q: WHAT’S YOUR MANAGEMENT STYLE? YOU SEEM TO BE A VERY “HANDS ON” MANAGER.
A: I have been very lucky to find like minded friends to help me with my businesses. I find they are an extension of myself in terms of ethics, talent, dedication and have the heart to do what we do.
I have a principle that has guided me from the start. That our guides and teammates are first vs. the customer first principle. I learned early on that if I was happy my customers were happy. I have consistently made sure our whole team knows that since the start. It’s about them enjoying what they do. The rest follows.
It’s been very fulfilling for me to see people I care about do what they are passionate about.
Q: WHO IS JET DE LA ISLA? HOW DO YOU SEE YOURSELF?
A: I see myself as a person who is operating at their full potential and
PHOTOS
fully realized. I’m very happy to say that all the dreams I had when I was younger I have fully experienced and materialized. I am who I wanted to be when I was younger. I have shaped myself by my wildest dreams and wishes. I have been inspired by my moms moral compass and my dads entrepreneurial spirit. Moved by generations before me to help each other. To be an example to those who think it’s not possible. But I’m here today to say that it is possible. I love being who I want to be and have fun doing it. Plus I see myself as a loving dad of two cats who loves adventures with my partner and friends.
Q: WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR FIRST COMPANY IN PUERTO VALLARTA?
A: I arrived in PV in 2016. Remember when people threatened to leave the US if Trump won? I was one of those who actually left. I needed a break from my life in the US and traveling around the world. When I started my first tour guide gig, tourists would often ask what I did on my days off. I would show them pictures of me snorkeling. They would ask me to take them there on my day off. It turned out to be the best days for me, and at the end, they gave me a tip! I was amazed that I was making money doing what I loved.
I remember my small private trips were different (gay, local, friendly) than the other large or gay boat companies, which were all mostly straight-operated. I was just doing it for a little extra cash at the time to feed my cat that I had rescued from la Isla Cuale. But luckily, I soon had a large following online, and it became a full-time gig.
At the time, pangas and boats weren’t accepting cards or listed online. With my programming background, it was easy to set up a website with card payments, online reviews, and fast customer service. It was revolutionary for Vallarta at the time.
My trips were perfect for couples wanting a private boat trip around the coast with cute guides wanting to have cute conversations. At the time, there were only big gay boat cruises, which wasn't really my style. So, Jet’s Private Boat Tours was launched, and within a year, I shot up to #3 on TripAdvisor out of 250 companies.
Q: YOUR TOURS HAVE RECEIVED TOP RATINGS AND AWARDS.
WHAT DO YOU THINK SETS THEM APART?
A: I think what sets us apart is the fact that I consider each of my teammates a friend. By that, I mean I have a lot in common with my friends, who happen to be our teammates. I feel they are an extension of myself when it comes to adventure; they are outgoing, adaptable, helpful, and honest people that I can count on professionally and personally. They are not just knowledgeable about the local flora and fauna but also skilled at creating a fun and respectful atmosphere. I have personally trained our guides and teammates to adapt to our guests. I love being around our team because they are friendly, cute, fun, and really my best friends in town.
The experiences we provide are based on a fusion of local traditions and culture mixed with my favorite travel experiences from over 50 countries. And most people don't know this, but our trips are for couples, singles, families, grandparents, kids, etc. Our private trips are for everyone, not just the gay community. So, bring your grandma and grandkids along— they'll love us!
Q: YOU ALSO OWN A GAY YOUTH HOSTEL. HOW DOES THAT FIT INTO YOUR OVERALL VISION?
A: As a young backpacker I would travel the world to different hostels. My favorite one was a gay youth hostel in Berlin. I remember when I first walked in I saw guys in their underwear, dancing to Britney with vodka in their hand. It was paradise! A huge breath of fresh air compared to the hundreds of other hostels I stayed at where I had to constantly come out to straight guys.
The hostel is located in the heart of Puerto Vallarta with memory foam beds, rain shower heads, privacy curtains and more. Comfort for gay youth backpackers in a safe space with like minded travelers. Plus very budget friendly with a 50% off our naked beach for example.
Q: AND WHAT ABOUT YOUR NEW MEZCAL BAR?
A: As a tour guide, our highlights usually include visiting Trini in Yelapa for 'Raicilla.' It's a type of
mezcal moonshine that predates the Spanish arrival. It’s a favorite of mine and even my mom's favorite, for example, haha. The new herbinfused raicilla bar, located on Jet's Naked Beach, is a celebration of my Mexican culture and my favorite memories as a guide. It's a place where guests can taste the local culture in the nude. Some of the finest mezcal in the world is grown right above our naked beach.
Fun fact: Building it myself has been a lot of fun. I love carpentry and getting all hot, oily, and sweaty with my sexy chacal boyfriend. It’s been a really fulfilling experience to see it materialize.
Q: THE TOWN IS ABUZZ IN REGARDS TO THE NEW COMMUNITY CENTER PROVIDING ACCESS TO LGBTQ+ HEALTH NEEDS. YOU HELPED LEAD THE GRASSROOTS EFFORT TO GET THIS GOING, ALONG WITH OTHER LEADERS IN TOWN, CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT THAT?
A: Growing up in a household where we couldn't always afford everything we needed, the opportunities I've had since coming to Vallarta have inspired me to give back. Our community, which we refer to with the term 'gay+', is made up of many diverse elements. For example, it includes queer friends, trans people, sex workers, seniors, visitors from all over the world, and local people, to name a few. We can have so much power if we join together.
Our vision for the community center is about empowering us to take care of each other. We want to grow beyond providing free medical services. We're looking to identify the biggest needs of our community. We will start by conducting listening sessions with community members in the form of focus groups. If anyone wants to participate in one, please contact us.
Q: WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST SURPRISING THING YOU’VE LEARNED WHILE GETTING THE VALLARTA GAY+ COMMUNITY CENTER OFF THE GROUND?
A: I've honestly been surprised to learn about DoxyPEP and its wonders. The stats show it has lowered syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia infections, and the results are very promising. I have
personally used DoxyPEP and have seen amazing results. It really works! I look forward to creating awareness campaigns for DoxyPEP and providing access for our community.
Another surprise is the high HIV rates. Jalisco has some of the highest HIV rates in the country, which reminds me that we have a lot of work ahead of us. I think if we educate our partners and friends on the importance of testing, we can take a big step forward together to fight the rise in infections. The fight is not over.
Q: FINALLY, I KNOW YOU ALWAYS HAVE SOMETHING EXTRA UP YOUR SLEEVE?
Well it’s not so much of a secret how sex positive I or our naked beach is. I’m wanting to launch an adult film production company. It’s still in the works but you can currently follow me on linktr.ee/jetsAdventures. You’ll find content from my personal life and behind the scenes on our naked beach, our naked team and more! Check out why I won best onlyfans of the year!

The first annual Puerto Vallarta Gays Best Of Awards (2023) was the idea of local entrepreneur Jet De La Isla, who also started (and moderates) the Facebook group Puerto Vallarta Gays Everything Gay You Need or Want to Know.
He wanted to use the power and influence of that group to recognize and celebrate businesses and individuals who “make Puerto Vallarta’s LGBT community shine brighter than ever before.”
And so in December 2023, he and a team assembled 45 different categories to have nominations.
They set up a form and asked for contributions through the 41,000 member Facebook group. Thousands of people nominated their favorites.
From there, the nominations were narrowed down to the top three in each category (some categories had more than a top three due to ties). Those nominations were then sent out in a form for voting in January 2024. And the top vote getters were declared the winners.
“In the spirit of unity and passion, we acknowledge that it is with the support of our incredible community that we can follow our passions and
continue doing what we love,” Jet said.
“On behalf of the Puerto Vallarta Gays: Everything Gay You Need Or Want To Know Facebook Group, I want to extend our heartfelt congratulations to each of you for your remarkable achievements at the Puerto Vallarta Gays Best Of Awards 2023,” Jet De La Isla said at a recent awards ceremony.
Even to make it as a top three finalist was quite an accomplishment for some of the businesses as many, many businesses were nominated.
De La Isla said the awards for 2024 would be fine tuned, with suggestions from the community on improvements that can be made - both to the nomination process and final voting. But overall he said, he was pleased with thousands of people participating in a fun event to showcase the Puerto Vallarta LGBTQ+ community.

Best Happy Hour: Blondies
For going on nine years, Blondies has been holding down the corner of Amapas and Pulpito, serving ice cold adult slushies and tasty cocktails to thirsty patrons and passersby.
Always open at 11 am, it’s a great place for a day drinking pit stop, or to hang out for a while with old or new friends. The crowd always picks up steam mid afternoon and during the 4-6 happy hour, you’ll often find a full house, starting on the street level and then upstairs in the loft.
After a fun beach day, a slushie is the perfect way to cool down! The second location, Los Otros Blondies, has also been seeing great crowds in the afternoons, rivaling the original.
Nearing its fifth anniversary, it offers another great spot for making/meeting friends and people watching with a delicious cocktail in hand.
Both locations feature boutiques with the original designs that define Blondies on clothes, beach gear, bags and more, all hand printed and sewn in-house at the Blondies Design Studio.
Honored to be included among these great businesses and individuals, Blondies was thrilled to be mentioned in the top three in several categories, for the bars and staff, taking home the awards for Best Happy Hour and Best Manager (Juan Ramon Marquez).
A huge thanks to Out and About PV and Jet’s ‘Everything Gay’ fb page, the Blondies crew look forward to seeing you all as they wrap up #9 and begin season #10 in the fall!
Blondies was also a finalist for Best Cocktail Bar in the Best of Gays Awards.
Casa Cupula Wins Best Gay
Pool Club at Best of
Gays Awards
Casa Cupula's pool club was recently awarded Best Gay Pool Club at the Best of Gays Awards. The award highlights Casa Cupula's two-decade commitment to the LGBTQ+ community in Puerto Vallarta.
"This is an honor and we appreciate everyone who voted for us," said Marcos Ruiz, marketing director for the hotel and pool club. “We are thankful to the incredible team here who create a welcoming environment."
Casa Cupula opened in 2002 and was one of the first LGBTQ+ owned hotels in the city. At the time, luxury hotels catering specifically to LGBTQ+ guests were scarce. Inspired, owner Don Pickens created Casa Cupula – a boutique hotel reflecting the sophisticated tastes of this community. Back then, Puerto Vallarta's LGBTQ+ scene was blossoming, particularly among West Coasters.
WINNER
The pool club was launched in 2019, and caters to a growing number of LGBTQ+ condo owners seeking a space to connect with others.
With the theme “Every Body is Beautiful”, Casa Cupula's pool club offered a solution – a space for connection, celebration, and inclusivity under the Puerto Vallarta sun.
"Their condos offered rooftop pools, but lacked service," Ruiz said. “Casa Cupula's pool club offered a solution – a space for connection, and inclusivity.”
The pool club prides itself on openness and inclusivity, with themed parties like "Adam & Steve" and the "NKD Pool Party".
Casa Cupula recently expanded the pool club, adding a VIP terrace, a jacuzzi, and a larger bar. It’s the site of numerous events.

Chachalaca Cheers to Double Nomination in Best of Gays Awards
Let's Pho, a haven of steaming pho and warm smiles, was just crowned the "Best Gay Owned Restaurant" at the Best of Gays Awards.
"We are very happy and very blessed," Owner Charlie Huynh said, his voice filled with pride. "We're still a relatively new restaurant, but we've poured our hearts into creating a welcoming space for everyone who walks through our doors."
Let's Pho has captured the hearts of Puerto Vallarta. Charlie believes their secret sauce lies in genuine connection.
"We don't see our customers as transactions," he explains. "They're friends who come to share a delicious meal and conversation." This philosophy resonates deeply with the LGBTQ+ community, where inclusive and welcoming spaces are often cherished.
Running an authentic Vietnamese restaurant in Mexico presented unique challenges. Sourcing essential ingredients requires Huynh to make trips to Vietnam, so that his food is as authentic as it can be.
Puerto Vallarta's vibrant Chachalaca bar is celebrating a double win –finalist nods for Best Happy Hour and Best Drag Bar in the Best of Gays Awards.
Owner Christopher Biles said, "This recognition after six years in Vallarta is amazing. It's all thanks to our team."
Chachalaca shines with its legendary happy hour, a local favorite from 4-7 pm daily. Picture generously poured margaritas for just 80 pesos, alongside cocktails (70 pesos), martinis (80 pesos), and their signature Chacha Lemon Drop (80 pesos).
Biles' story is one of chasing dreams.
"Corporate banking wasn't fulfilling," he explained. "Puerto Vallarta called, and when the bar's business partner sold in 2018, I grabbed the chance with my best friend." Biles thrives on freedom and supporting his staff.
What truly sets Chachalaca apart?
"The guest experience," Biles stresses. "We offer a tranquil garden or an electrifying drag show. We support local artists and prioritize employee benefits. We reject seasonal fluctuations – exceptional service year-round is our motto. The team seamlessly blends our love for locals and tourists, making everyone feel welcome."
Biles credits the high-quality happy hour for its recognition.
"Discounts are easy, but quality and value matter," he explains. He highlights a hands-on approach. "Open communication with the team is key. We share goals and challenges, fostering a collaborative spirit. Happy staff equals happy guests – a win-win for everyone."
These hurdles couldn't dampen Charlie's spirit. He poured his heart into building a strong team.
"I'm a bit of a perfectionist, I won't deny it," he said. "There isn’t a large Vietnamese community here, so I had to train the staff myself."
After two years of dedication, the team blossomed, becoming not only skilled but passionate about Vietnamese cuisine.”
The Best of Gays Award is more than just a trophy for Charlie; it's a validation of his tireless efforts.
"We're a family here at Let's Pho," he says with warmth. "And this award is for all 17 of us. We're providing a stable income and a sense of belonging, both for our staff and our customers."
Let's Pho's generosity extends beyond their delicious food. They actively support the LGBTQ+ community and other local initiatives.
"We believe in giving back," Charlie states firmly. "This community has embraced us, and we want to show our appreciation in any way we can."
"WE'RE A FAMILY HERE," SAYS OWNER CHARLIE HUYNH

Oscar Almeida's infectious grin speaks volumes as he recounts his recent triumph at the Best of Gays Awards. "Honestly, being named Best Gay Photographer in Vallarta is humbling," he confesses. "It's more than an award; it's a celebration of the vibrant LGBTQ+ community that thrives here in Puerto Vallarta, a community I'm so happy to be a part of."
Almeida's love affair with photography began in his youth, blossoming around the age of 14. "Even back then, before I fully grasped thet realities faced by the LGBTQ+ community in Mexico," he recalls, "there was a sense of solace and inspiration I found in capturing moments through the camera." Puerto Vallarta, with its open arms and progressive spirit, offered a stark contrast to the broader Mexican landscape, a fact not lost on the young photographer.
As Almeida matured and embraced his own identity, his artistic vision took on a deeper resonance. "One of the most remarkable experiences for me has been documenting the heart of Puerto Vallarta's gayborhood," shares. The
camera becomes a conduit, channeling the essence of this dynamic community – the kaleidoscope of entrepreneurs, artists, and individuals who breathe life into its streets.
The Best Gay Photographer award carries a special weight for Almeida. "It's incredibly humbling," he admits, his voice filled with genuine appreciation. "The support and recognition from the community mean a lot to me." His passion is palpable, infusing every photograph he takes. "I pour my heart and soul into each capture," says, "and I truly hope that my passion shines through in my work."
Almeida's vision extends far beyond this prestigious award. "I'm committed to using my art as a platform to uplift and celebrate the LGBTQ+ community, not just here in Vallarta, but beyond," declares with unwavering conviction. This recognition serves as a testament to his exceptional talent and unwavering dedication, a promise of even more powerful storytelling to come. Almeida's camera isn't just capturing moments; it's capturing the very essence of a thriving community, its struggles and triumphs, its joys and sorrows – all through the lens of pride.
Sales Manager, utilizes his local expertise to connect businesses with O&APV's readership. Oscar Almeida, the Chief Photographer, Videographer, and Social Media manager, brings his artistic talents to life through captivating visuals.
Marco Encinas, the Designer, ensures a visually stunning presentation for every issue.
Rande Lee, combines his event planning skills with digital sales and a passion for storytelling as the Events Manager/Digital Sales and writer.
"We are passionate about building the LGBTQ+ community and O&APV serves as a powerful platform to achieve just that,” Jones said. “We appreciate the support from the business community and our readers.”
Out & About PV Wins Big at Best of Gays Awards: Shining a Light on the LGBTQ+ Community
The Swedes Bar and Bistro: A Puerto Vallarta Gem Earns Local Recognition
Puerto Vallarta resident and LGBTQ+ advocate Paul Crist has been recognized for his tireless work with the recent Best Activist Award at the Best of Gays Awards. Crist, who owns Hotel Mercurio and Mercurio Swimwear, has been a pillar of the city's LGBTQ+ community for over two decades, witnessing and contributing to its significant progress.
Arriving in 2002, Crist quickly saw a need for action. "There was a real lack of resources for the LGBTQ+ community, especially regarding HIV/AIDS," he says. In 2003, he took a bold step, founding Vallarta Enfrenta el SIDA (VES), the city's first legally recognized HIV/AIDS nonprofit. This pioneering organization brought crucial services like rapid testing and educational programs to the community for the first time.
"Before VES," Crist explains, "testing was limited and shrouded in stigma. People weren't getting the help they needed." VES tackled this head-on, working with local agencies to offer testing alongside general health
Thousands of votes cast and a local favorite emerges victorious - The Swedes Bar and Bistro in Puerto Vallarta has been recognized by the community for its exceptional service and delicious food as one of three finalist as Best Gay Owned Restaurant, Best of Gays Award. But for owner Christopher Maluck, the true reward lies in the loyalty of his guests.
"Each year, we have the honor of serving over 20,000 guests from around the world," says Maluck.
"While the recognition within our local community is wonderful, the real vote of confidence comes when they return year after year."
This dedication to consistency and a welcoming atmosphere is what Maluck believes sets The Swedes apart.
"We've struck a balance between casual and upscale," he explains. "Guests appreciate that they can count on the same dishes and drinks they've loved on previous visits."
Another perk? A breathtaking view. "We're not on street level," says Maluck. "Diners enjoy a bird's-eye view of Olas Altas while they savor their meal."
Finding paradise wasn't always easy for Maluck. "As an immigrant," he admits, "one of the biggest challenges was simply adjusting to the pace of life here. But that challenge has ultimately made me a happier person."
Maluck's hands-on approach is evident in both the food and service. "It's about finding the right balance," he says. "I empower my team to contribute and create, but I'm also involved in ensuring consistent results. I'm incredibly proud of what we've accomplished together."
But giving back to the community is just as important to Maluck as creating a successful restaurant. "The Swedes Bar and Bistro is proud to support Vallarta Cares, The Vallarta Gay Community Center, and various animal rescue organizations," he says. "And you might even see me walking my adopted Husky/Aussie mix, Hazel, on the malecón. Be sure to say hi!"
screenings, making it more accessible and less intimidating.
Crist's impact extended beyond VES. He played a key role in the development of the first two CAPASITS clinics, standalone public facilities dedicated to HIV/AIDS care. These clinics, initially launched in Puerto Vallarta and Mexico City, have since grown to a network of 40 across the country. Sadly, VES closed its doors in 2010 due to funding constraints, but Crist's dedication continued.
The COVID-19 pandemic presented a new challenge. Partnering with other local activists, Crist helped raise nearly $50,000 USD through a GoFundMe campaign. These funds provided over 14,000 food baskets to vulnerable communities and individuals within the LGBTQ+ scene, many of whom faced unemployment due to the shutdowns.
Crist's activism extends beyond health and social issues. He's a vocal supporter of the local arts scene, sponsoring productions and artists at venues like The Palm and Act2.

Ryan Donner Claims Best Gay Realtor Award and Leads Donner and Associates to New Heights
The vibrant LGBTQ+ community of Puerto Vallarta has its champion in Ryan Donner. Recently crowned Best Gay Realtor at the Best of Gays Awards, Donner isn't just an individual realtor; he's the driving force behind the phenomenal success of Donner and Associates, a company built on a foundation of exceptional service, community spirit, and genuine human connection.
All three of the top three finalists for the Best Gay Realtor award were from the Donner and Associates firm including Derek Carkner, Ryan Donner and Enrique Fragoso.
Donner's love affair with Puerto Vallarta began on a whim – a cruise ship visit in 2008 that sparked a deep yearning for a new life. Within a few years, his home state of California was a memory, and Puerto Vallarta became his adopted home.
In 2015, leveraging his background in online marketing and Agri Business, he embarked on a new path in real estate, working for established agencies like Coldwell Banker and Timothy Real Estate Group. These experiences honed his skills and ignited a passion for helping others find their dream home in paradise. In 2020, that passion manifested in the form of Donner and Associates.
From the beginning, Donner's entrepreneurial spirit was evident. He understood the power of marketing, blanketing Puerto Vallarta with his
company's presence across buses, radio, magazines, and newspapers.
"I poured all my money into marketing when I started the firm," he admits. "I believe that initial burst helped propel us where we are today."
And "where they are today" is an impressive feat. In just three short years, Donner and Associates has blossomed into a full-fledged agency with a team of 48 agents. The reach extends beyond Puerto Vallarta, with offices established in Nuevo Nayarit, Guadalajara, Ajijic, and soon, San Miguel de Allende.
Donner's ambitious vision? A network stretching across Mexico's most popular tourist destinations, catering to those seeking a slice of paradise.
But his reach extends beyond borders. Understanding the need for seamless transitions, Donner and Associates has established a relocation department, offering connections with US realtors for those selling properties before their Mexican dream becomes reality. Further solidifying their commitment to one-stop service, they've recently added insurance services to their repertoire.
However, Ryan Donner isn't solely driven by business success. He believes that a company's true worth lies in its connection to the
community. Donner and Associates actively embodies this philosophy. From supporting Casa Esperanza with the "What a Drag" event to organizing a Christmas toy drive and participating in the Rio Cuale cleanup, they are dedicated to giving back.
This commitment extends to the industry itself. Donner has fostered collaboration within the real estate sector by initiating regular networking mixers for realtors in the city. This spirit of cooperation fosters knowledge sharing and raises the bar for excellence across the board.
But what truly sets Donner and Associates apart is their core philosophy.
"We are a company made up of authentic people who are cordial and, at our core, human," Donner explains. "We believe that treating our clients with kindness and respect is the best way to provide them with the best possible service."
This translates into a genuine understanding of each client's unique situation. Donner emphasizes the importance of a knowledgeable team: "Education is a fundamental value for us. It involves continuous learning and staying informed about the real estate industry. This empowers our agents to provide the best possible service by staying up-to-date with market trends, regulations, and innovative practices."
This dedication to education extends beyond agents.
"It's important to understand what the situation of our clients is and provide them with the information they need to make the best decision," Donner says. Their clientcentric approach doesn't stop at closing the deal.
"With our experience and attention to detail, we provide our clients not only with excellent service in the purchase or sale of their home but also with post-sale support. This is one of the main reasons why our clients recommend us," he adds.
The Best Gay Realtor award is a well-deserved recognition of Ryan Donner's achievements. But it's also a testament to the exceptional company he's built. Donner and Associates' dedication to excellence, community involvement, and fostering a collaborative environment sets a high standard.
As Ryan Donner himself says, "The company is here to help the agents, and that ultimately benefits the clients."
With this philosophy at its core, Donner and Associates is poised for continued success, leaving a positive mark on Puerto Vallarta's LGBTQ+ community and beyond. They are more than just realtors; they are trusted advisors, and community partners.
WINNER
First Annual
‘We Are Puerto Vallarta’ Awards
The first annual “We Are Puerto Vallarta” awards was a celebration of the businesses, venues, entertainers, and special people that have made Puerto Vallarta a truly remarkable destination.
The voting covered 25 categories, from Outstanding Individual and Favorite Business Owner, to Favorite Taco Stand. Sponsored by local rental and real estate company PVRPV, ThrIVe IV and MedSpa, PrintPV.com and El Grano, the award nominations were collected by surveying thousands of guests. An awards ceremony was held in April 2024, that covered the period for 2023.
Jamie Alexander, director of business development for PVRPV, said after the initial call for nominations were completed by guests, it was opened to the public to vote, with voting shared across social media platforms and through email invitations sent by PVRPV to its large database. Once announced, the momentum and enthusiasm for the awards took flight. Other agencies, companies and other media outlets from Puerto Vallarta loved the idea so much they too asked to share the survey with their guests, customers and audience.
“We surveyed thousands of their guests and to develop the nominations,” Alexander explained.
“Instead of a popularity contest, it is the actual people that come to PV to enjoy what PV has to offer that selected the nominees. We know that these inaugural awards are just the beginning of an exciting journey. As we move forward, we will continue to add new categories & nominees based on the recommendations and insights shared by guests through surveys and through people like YOU, who love our community.”
A Facebook page has been created, We Are Puerto Vallarta, to share the information on the nominations and awards. You can view it here.
Alexander said that they will be adding categories next year based on feedback from voters. 2024 voting will start in December 2024 and the winners will be announced in 2025.
“Thank you to EVERYONE for your participation in recognizing the people and businesses that make our community so great,” he said.
“In the first 24 hours of voting, we received over 1,200 responses to the 2023 ‘We Are Puerto Vallarta Awards’.”

BECOME A PARENT IS POSSIBLE! Surrogacy for LGBTQIA+ families
For homoparental couples or single men, the only way to have a genetically linked child is through surrogacy. Surrogacy is a legal agreement and a reproduction technique, where a woman freely and informedly decides to gestate the baby of a family, who due to physical or health impossibility cannot carry a pregnancy, to this noble-hearted woman, known as the surrogate, who will not share any legal or genetic link with the baby.
At Seremos Parents we specialize in coordinating processes for people from the LGBT+ population, for couples as well as single parents, so that they feel free to be who they are, while fulfilling their dream of being parents.
Our coordination is comprehensive, covering all legal and medical aspects of a surrogacy process. We take care of every detail so that
these families can concentrate on the most important thing: the arrival of their future child.
Our processes are carried out under the ethical surrogacy, methodology created by us, which is composed of 4 fundamental pillars: beneficence, which is based on protecting, defending rights and preventing harm; non-maleficence, which refers to not causing pain or deprivation; autonomy, which expresses the freedom that people have to decide and choose about their lives; and justice, this principle is based on non-discrimination. Each of our actions are carried out under these principles, because we seek that each of the people who participate in a surrogacy process enjoy it.
Throughout the process, the project is coordinated in a personalized way, adapting to
the needs of each case; The entire process is divided and scheduled in stages; A communication channel is established between the agency -us-, the legal team, the medical team and the intended parents.
The search and evaluation of the surrogate is carried out, always putting their well-being first; and we follow up and accompany you at every stage, from the first video call, until we see that beautiful family from a house with the dream of their life in their arms.
Ana Bueno, is the director of Seremos Padres, she belongs to the LGBT+ population and is the creator of the Seremos Padres work methodology, which she called “ethical surrogacy.”

Bonito Kitchen Wins Hearts and Tummies in Puerto Vallarta
BY JERRY JONES
Francie Nguyen's eyes sparkle with a mix of gratitude and excitement. Her restaurant, Bonito Kitchen, has been named the winner for "Favorite Specialty Cuisine" in the We Are PV Awards. It's a recognition not just of her delicious food, but of the unique journey that brought her to Puerto Vallarta and the vibrant Asian flavors she's woven into the city's culinary tapestry.
"Honestly, it's incredibly humbling," Nguyen shares. "Being nominated for representing Vietnamese cuisine, my heritage, is a huge honor. We put a lot of heart into showcasing the diverse flavors of Asia here in Mexico."
Nguyen's path to becoming a restaurateur wasn't a conventional one. Seeking a change from the fast-paced life of New York City, she found herself in Mexico City, working in the fashion industry. Yet, something was missing – the comforting flavors of her childhood. A trip to Puerto Vallarta, with its
undeniable charm, sparked a new dream. Missing Asian cuisine in her adopted city, Nguyen decided to take a leap of faith and open Bonito Kitchen, her first foray into the restaurant world. Though lacking formal culinary training, her passion for cooking stemmed from her exceptional mother, who instilled in her the art of crafting layered flavor profiles.
The first Bonito Kitchen opened its doors in Gaviotas seven years ago, offering a taste of Southeast Asia to Puerto Vallarta. The success led to a second location by the Rio Cuale four years later. Unfortunately, a hurricane forced its closure, demonstrating the resilience Nguyen would need to navigate the restaurant industry. Two years ago, a new Bonito Kitchen rose in Zona Romántica, welcoming diners with its warmth and delicious food. More recently, Casita & Garden joined the family, showcasing not just Nguyen's culinary expertise but also her
love for gardening, reflected in the restaurant's beautiful ambience. In a field often dominated by men, Nguyen acknowledges the challenges, particularly when it comes to sourcing authentic Southeast Asian ingredients in Mexico. Yet, she remains undeterred. "Race or gender doesn't set limitations," she declares with a smile. "It's about passion and dedication."
So, what is it that keeps Bonito Kitchen at the forefront of Puerto Vallarta's culinary scene? Nguyen believes it's a combination of factors – the use of high-quality ingredients, a commitment to innovation with constantly evolving dishes, and the creation of beautiful, welcoming spaces. "Each restaurant reflects my love for gardening," she adds, "and I want people to feel special when they dine with us."
Nguyen's hands-on approach is another key ingredient in Bonito Kitchen's success. "Our menu is unique," she explains. "It's important for me to train both the front and back of house on the dishes – how they're
prepared, why certain ingredients are used, how the dish should taste and look. I need to constantly monitor things to ensure everyone adheres to the expectations."
But Nguyen isn't satisfied with just maintaining the success of Bonito Kitchen. This ever-evolving entrepreneur is constantly on the move. Recently, she opened AguaMiel, a Café & Brunch spot in Versalles with a friend, offering a delightful fusion of Mexican and international flavors alongside robust coffee. Additionally, nestled within Casita & Garden is the new Izakaya Sake Bar, a haven for those seeking traditional Japanese fare paired with an exquisite sake menu.
One thing's for sure – under Nguyen's leadership, Bonito Kitchen and its sister ventures promise a delicious and ever-evolving culinary adventure in Puerto Vallarta. Stay tuned, because as Nguyen says with a twinkle in her eye, "there's more to come!"
Cassandra Shaw Jewelry Named Favorite Jewelry Shop
BY RANDE LEE
Cassandra Shaw Jewelry has won the First Annual We Are Puerto Vallarta Favorite Jewelry Shop Award, and was named as a finalist for the coveted Best Business Award.
Her boutique is proudly an LGBTQ+ destination of choice, and the honor is deeply felt. I visited recently, and felt an immediate excitement upon entering the eclectic space.
A vibrant collection of; rings, necklaces, earrings, and bracelets are featured. Cassandra’s art is paired in perfect harmony with unique jewelry featuring an array of stones, fossils and other coveted materials.
Originally hailing from Vancouver, both Cassandra and her sister Candace have called Puerto Vallarta their permanent home for many years, Candace since 1984, and Cassandra since 1999.
Cassandra opened her labor of love, Cassandra Shaw Jewelry in 2007, and it became an instant hit, flourishing thanks to a fiercely loyal following who crave what only her shop offers.
Cassandra’s trademark, and constant companions, is her Chihuahua rescue dogs. Her relationship with the Chihuahua family began when Candace got involved with the local animal rescue movement years ago, and she
and Cassandra have been active ever since.
“We often have a foster dog here at the store to help them get adopted,” Cassandra shared. Candace estimates they have adopted out approximately six hundred dogs over the past fifteen years.
I asked Cassandra, what makes Cassandra Shaw Jewelry so well loved by the local community, and tourists alike?
Cassandra responded thoughtfully, “Giving excellent customer service and standing by what I sell, I don’t forget our customers when they leave the shop,” she stated smiling, continuing, she shared “We want buying art, or jewelry here, to be a happy, comfortable experience; we want the customer to really fall in love with the piece they are taking home.”
Let's Pho Up for Best Specialty Cuisine Award
Let's Pho, a Vietnamese restaurant that has quickly gained a loyal following in Puerto Vallarta, is a finalist for the "Favorite Specialty Cuisine" award at the We Are PV awards.
Owner Charlie Huynh is thrilled about the recognition, but told O&APV that his true focus lies in fostering a welcoming atmosphere.
"We're so grateful to be nominated," Huynh beams. "We've poured our hearts into creating a space where everyone feels like a friend."
This dedication to genuine connection is a key ingredient in Let's Pho's success.
"We don't just serve food," Huynh explains. "We build relationships."
Huynh, a self-proclaimed perfectionist, meticulously trained his staff of 17, many with no prior Vietnamese culinary experience.
“Seeing them take ownership and experiment with flavors is incredibly rewarding."
This dedication to fostering a culture of learning and experimentation is a key ingredient in Let's Pho's innovative approach.
But there are challenges abound in paradise. Sourcing authentic Vietnamese ingredients in Mexico requires resourcefulness, with Huynh personally making trips to Vietnam to secure the freshest spices and herbs.
"It's a labor of love," he laughs.
"But we believe the quality shows in every bowl."
Let's Pho's impact goes beyond taste buds. The restaurant actively supports local initiatives, particularly those serving the LGBTQ+ community. "We're a family here," Huynh says warmly. "And families support each other."

New Tryst in Town: Luxury Hotel Caters to LGBTQ+ Guests in Puerto Vallarta
BY JERRY JONES
Puerto Vallarta's LGBTQ+ scene, long a beacon of inclusivity and vibrant nightlife, is about to add a touch of sophisticated luxury to its offerings.
The Tryst Puerto Vallarta is a new hotel spearheaded by hospitality entrepreneur Tristan Schukraft. More than just a place to stay, The Tryst promises to be an experience, an epicenter for LGBTQ+ culture, curated by a man who understands the importance of safe spaces and the joy of a good pool party.
The Tryst is located at 138 Pulpito, the site of a few different hotels that have occupied the space. The 55-room hotel was known as The Abbey, which opened as an adults only gay hotel in 2006. At some point it became the Torre De Oro Hotel. It went up for sale in 2013. In 2017 it was renamed Hotel Amapa (which never opened but underwent extensive renovations).
Schukraft purchased the hotel in early 2024, and has collaborated with the renowned Estudio Esterlina design firm, known for their work
on the Four Seasons Tamarindo, to breathe new life into the space. Think minimalist elegance infused with a touch of Mexican flair, creating a modern yet inviting atmosphere. The 55 rooms are a haven for relaxation and connection, fostering a sense of community among guests.
“A lot of the major work was already done, and done really well. We’re mostly doing all the finishing elements and the fixtures and furniture selections in partnership with the team at Estudio Esterlina,” Schukraft explained.
The name for his hotel line (he also owns one in Puerto Rico), The Tryst, is a throwback to his childhood nickname.
“My childhood nickname was Tris. I was on the gay beach in San Juan in Puerto Rico and looking at a property to establish a gay beach club there,” he said. “My realtor told me the hotel next to it was for sale. I looked up and it was called ‘The Tryst.’ I always wanted to own a
hotel and here was one for sale with my name on it!”
And so he did indeed purchase that hotel, and he says his philosophy for Tryst Hotels is to “‘let you be your best self, even on your worst behavior. That kind of explains me. I wanted something playful, even though it’s a luxury hotel. We want you to embrace the extraordinary, one Tryst at a time.”
Schukraft's journey to becoming a hospitality mogul wasn't a straight shot. A self-proclaimed "CEO of everything gay," his path began with a love for entertainment. Years ago, inspired by the movie "The Birdcage," a seed was planted – a desire to own a hotel that captured the film's glamorous and welcoming spirit. Fast forward, and Schukraft finds himself not only at the helm of a hotel but also the owner of a string of successful nightclubs, further solidifying his reputation as a champion of LGBTQ+ entertainment.
Schukraft is a technology expert, hotelier and nightlife entrepreneur who has a business portfolio that includes Tryst Hotels (Puerto Rico
and Puerto Vallarta), The Abbey (a legendary West Hollywood LGBTQ+ nightclub, MISTR (a telemedicine provider of online PrEP and HIV care), and Circo (a LGBTQ+ nightclub in Puerto Rico).
“Tryst Hotels, The Abbey, MISTR, Circo - they all kind of connect in an interesting way,” he explained.
“There is a generation of LGBT entrepreneurs looking to retire right now and the LGBT-owned businesses that defined our neighborhoods are turning over. If another generation of LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs don’t buy them, our queer villages will disappear. Making sure these businesses stay operating and LGBTQ+ owned protects our communities.”
Schukraft's connection to Puerto Vallarta is as genuine as the legendary Mexican sunshine. For over 15 years, the city has been a refuge, a place where he found a welcoming community that transcended labels.
"It's a place where everyone mingles together," he reflects, highlighting the city's unique charm
that blends historic streets with a vibrant present. It was this love for Puerto Vallarta, coupled with a growing concern about the future of LGBTQ+ businesses, that led Schukraft to take over a previously existing property and transform it into The Tryst.
The Tryst may be designed with LGBTQ+ travelers in mind, but its doors are open to everyone.
"The only thing straight are the martinis," Schukraft jokes, emphasizing the hotel's commitment to inclusivity. What truly sets The Tryst apart is its unwavering dedication to five-star luxury.
Imagine poolside lounging in glamorous settings, indulging in weekend drag brunches featuring world-class entertainment, or letting loose at rooftop pool parties with renowned DJs spinning the night away. At The Tryst, Schukraft promises an experience where "fabulous is guaranteed."
But Schukraft's vision extends beyond luxury and entertainment. The Tryst prioritizes giving back
to the community it calls home. The hotel will be a significant employer, providing over 100 jobs. Additionally, Schukraft is committed to eco-conscious practices and actively supporting the local LGBTQ+ community and minorityowned businesses. This focus on social responsibility reflects a core value within Tryst Hotels – to create a positive impact wherever they set foot.
The Tryst Puerto Vallarta is just the first chapter in Schukraft's hospitality story. He teases the upcoming announcement of a third Tryst Hotel location, solidifying the brand's position as a rising star in LGBTQ+ travel.

From Paralysis to Paradise: Yoga Studio Owner Finds Healing and Opens Hearts in Puerto Vallarta
BY RANDE LEE
Taraka Yoga brings a vibrant energy to the center of the fast developing Colonia of Versalles.
Sitting opposite the well known Barrio Bistro, it opened on January 11, 2023, and has been winning converts ever since.
Owned by Mark Hanuman, the space exudes a brightness and positivity that is contagious. Meeting Mark as the sun streamed into the expansive studio; I learned of his incredible life journey, his vision for the studio, and the options they offer to fit anyone who will allow the benefits
of Yoga to come into their life.
Mark hails from Baltimore, but has lived in Mexico since 2012.
He discovered Yoga due to a life altering event, which very nearly was a life ending event.
Shortly after graduating from college, he visited his brother in Hawaii in June of 2004. While climbing a cliff there, he fell thirty feet, breaking his neck and back. He was paralyzed for three long, excruciating months. As a way to heal himself, he discovered Yoga, utilizing it as a powerful tool in his physical rehabilitation. After Mark
recovered, he returned to school for his Master’s Degree in Translation, then worked for a number of years in musical theater, before joining the Peace Corps and living on the top of a mountain in the Northern Andes of Peru.
In 2012, seeking a change, he moved to the Mexican city of Queretaro, which lies north of Mexico City. He opened a yoga studio there, which flourished, until the pandemic hit in 2020.
After closing the studio in Queretaro, he moved to the Pacific beach town popularly known as San Pancho. After two years of some down time there Mark was ready to make his move to Puerto Vallarta.
“Why PV,” I inquired, he answered with a smile, responding; “beaches, mountains, jungles.”
The stars aligned as Mark decided to open a Yoga/Wellness Studio in Versalles upon settling in. His dream was to create a nurturing community of supportive, like-minded people who are interested in delving deeper into their own spirituality.
As part of the LGBTQ+ community, Mark feels strongly that spirituality isn’t necessarily antithetical to being a valued member of that community.
“Both can coexist very naturally, in a space that is inclusive, safe, and diverse,” Mark shared.
His mantra is “unity in diversity,” meaning the paths are many to finding acceptance, love, and peace, but the goal is the same; “there shouldn’t be a tension in that regardless of your belief structure,” he stated.
By engaging in; postures, meditation, breathing, and chanting, we are able to experience those positive feelings. Mark emphasized that he wants his students to realize the importance of the spiritual underpinnings behind the physical practices, “the real goal is inner peace, not just putting your foot behind your head,” Mark said smiling; he continued “you will get physically stronger, but that is an added benefit, not the end goal.”
There are two different styles of Yoga that Mark teaches; Sivananda,

which is slower paced, and more introspective, and Rocket, which as its name implies, is much more physically challenging than the former. Mark has the help of five other instructors whose styles include; Dharma, Vinysasa, and Yin, as well.
Every Wednesday evening at 7:30pm is a free chanting class, which includes; guided meditation, chanting, conversation, and philosophy.
Mark has a clothing line that is sold in the studio called Omen Yoga Wear, the slogan for the brand is, The World Is My Mat, which speaks to the reality that you can practice Yoga anywhere, at any time, it goes with you.
As the afternoon was moving on, Mark made a final point that he wanted to share, “Takara Yoga is an inclusive community space, where nationals, those in the foreign community, and those in the tourist community, can all come together and feel at home,” as Mark said with a smile in his eyes, “no one has ever finished a Yoga class and thought, that was a bad idea.”
