Welcome to LGBT History Month Festival 2016

www.outbristol.co.uk

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Trans History Month is celebrated in February in the UK but the work to challenge homophobia, biphobia and transphobia continues throughout the year. This year’s focus in the West of England’s celebration is Mapping and Making History. LGBTHM featured figures this year are you, helping to map your stories. The region has major heritage projects to record and map your stories onto Know Your Place. To mark the making history part of the festival on the 23rd February we have the Launch of the LGBT Manifesto which, with your help will shape policy and turn equal rights into equality. As ever this year Bristol has a fine offering of events, highlights follow. For all the latest information check out www.outbristol.co.uk/lgbthistory

During the 1930s Laura’s conviction strengthened that he was a man in a woman’s body. He sought the advice of a psychiatrist whose indiscretion and the ensuing society gossip caused Laura to come to Bristol in about 1939. Cheryl Morgan organiser of this LGBT History Month Bristol two day event gives a fascinating talk and insight into this subject

Andrew Foyle, Local Historian and one of the project directors of OutStories Bristol history projects, gives one of his fascinating talks on LGBT history. Mary Renault and The Charioteer

He has written many leaflets, articles and books of Brislington local history as well as producing two DVDs. He has also been Secretary of his local drama group, St Luke’s Church Players since it began in 1988, and has written fifteen plays for the group. Making Gaywaves 14:40 Terry Starr will be presenting Making Gaywaves – Community Radio for LGBT People in the West Country. “ShoutOut” is the largest LGBT radio programme in the South West — in fact, it’s the only one. Currently broadcasting over 5 different radio stations, the show has also given rise to several offshoots and created a facebook group for gay and trans radio activists cooperate with material and mutual support. In this presentation, Terry Starr, who had the original idea for a gay radio show on community radio in Bristol, looks back at the long struggle for radio reform in the UK, with particular reference to the LGBT communities. Did you know that the first DJ to be out on the air was Tony Allan (1950-2004), who worked on the long standing offshore pirate station Radio Caroline? Or that “ShoutOut”‘s Andy Thomas ran the internet’s first regular radio station for gay men, in the late nineties? Terry will look at some of the factors leading to grass roots and community access broadcasting coming to the UK, and then at the experience of making “ShoutOut”, a show that has run since 2010. A little piece of social history, Terry will explain how the slogan of media reform activists, “Don’t Hate the Media, Become the Media” can empower LGBTQ+ communities to make their voices heard. Devils in Human Shape 15:00 Devils in Human Shape is a talk by Prof. Steve Poole, University of the West of England on the topic of Sodomy and the Law in 18th Century Bristol.
