OUT BRISTOL WELCOME

“The definitive destination for the LGBT+ communities in the dual city region of the West of England.”

Welcome to Out Bristol an independent community magazine and website for the LGBT+ communities of the West of England. Established in 2008 as an independent free access website and guide that joins up the dots to create a hub linking to further support and information. The website and guide quickly turned into a magazine with the same aims as the website as a hub, showcasing what’s on in the region for LGBT+ people. This developed to linking with the tourism board to showcase the great things happening in the city region. The site is now the LGBT+ tourism site for the region, with links to information on where to stay, attractions, festivals and the LGBT+ Scene. We have an open source policy for the site, magazine and social media which means all outbristol

outbristol

content comes directly from the source as they have sent it #nofilter. Our communities are diverse and editing content to one single voice when we are many voices does not allow for free expression. Out Bristol has over 80 contributors via its social media, website and magazine and we welcome people to contribute to the website and magazine as the more voices the better. Out Bristol is your virutal community centre, home of your Out Bristol Magazine. We’re a hub hosting a space to plug your events, social groups and news and we’re 100% independent and non for profit. We’re whatever you want us to be. We would like to thank you for visiting us and supporting Out Bristol. WWW.OUTBRISTOL.CO.UK

Drag On 12th 13th April 2018 Wardrobe Theatre

Times: 20:00 Tickets: £10

A loving, fire-breathing exploration of queer identity, fantasy and myth, presented by James Morgan Following his premiere at The Yard Theatre in London, as part of NOW ‘17 festival of experimental theatre, dance artist James Morgan sets fire to the gender binary in this multidisciplinary hour-long show. James’ reptilian alter ego shares witty and thought-provoking stories about drag, monstrosity and the end of the world – with experimental dance and fierce lip-syncing to Nicki Minaj, Marilyn Manson and Cher. By embracing our innermost fantasies, what can we reveal about being present and queer in the modern world? In 2018, as the repercussions of human dominance on earth become increasingly apocalyptic, aren’t we better off as monsters than as humans? “Drag On subverts ideals of drag, beauty and fantasy, ultimately presenting an innovative exploration of contemporary obsessions that pull at the edges of drag as performance, and as an art form. Laugh-outloud funny, thoughtful and fresh!” Andrew Ellerby, Director of ‘And What?’ Queer Arts Festival “The costumes and make-up are phenomenal… he’s gone for gold in terms of Dragon Wings and glitz, which have an undeniable WOW-factor.” The LGBTQ Arts Review “Morgan handles speech, poetry, mime, movement and both subtle and anarchic humour without a flicker of inhibition.” Resolution! “Moves like a creature you have never seen before, and will probably never see again… I wanted to sing out loud with this wonderful, majestic ‘beastly’ dragon.” South East Dance

NEW RULES BY JOE BUTLER

I see the double take all the time. Peppering the routine Monday chit-chat with rugby often provokes a visible mental clash when you’re talking about a queer documentary not two minutes later. Sportsmanship and homosexuality tend to be acknowledged independently, yet fail to find a synergy between the two; particularly with the more ‘masculine’ sports. Inclusivity is still largely in its infancy, with an increasing number of out, queer sportspeople filling the channels at every major event. Alongside the ‘old-school’ likes of Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova, recent years have seen the rise of personalities such as Tom Daley, Caitlyn Jenner and Adam Rippon, who put forward their queer lifestyles for all to see in the public eye. The 2018 Winter Olympics saw the live broadcast of Gus Kenworthy kissing his boyfriend before his qualifiers, something previously unprecedented amongst televised sports. However, there is still a significant disconnection between queer representation and celebrated athleticism, particularly within the more ‘masculine’ sports. Figures such as Nigel Owens, Keegan Hirst and Gareth Thomas show the presence of queer men within the rugby circuit, while organizational efforts, including those by Stonewall and England Rugby, endeavour to promote inclusivity within the sport. Recent initiatives such as the Rainbow Laces campaign have bolstered the accessibility to wider masses, adopted by the England Rugby team with sponsorship from Aviva and Stonewall, acting as a forefront of inclusivity issues in mainstream sports. However, the

unfortunately high amount of vitriol online show why such measures are still necessary, and why the presence of inclusive sports, including Inclusive Rugby, is key to reaching a more integrated future. I came along to my first training session with the Bisons last October, not really knowing what to expect. My previous, minor, experience with rugby largely revolved around innate athleticism, bonding over girls and terms like ‘fag’ and ‘gay’ being hurled around as insults; which still manifested in my pre-conceptions. Looking back on the past 6 months, I can honestly say that I have not regretted a single moment. The club itself, and the wider IGR (Inclusive Gay Rugby) community, bring no assumptions with them, demands of physicality, nor any stereotypes that propagate throughout. The amalgamation of inclusivity and sport goes above and beyond all expectation, with nothing but potential to improve the game, the community and the livelihoods of anyone who gets involved. David Hoyle: Diamond 28 April 2018 Time: 20.00 Arnolfini Ticket price: £16.00

Diamond is an unforgiving queer performance of sexuality and British culture exploring LGBT history from 1957 to 2018 through the personal biography of avant garde performer David Hoyle. Weaving together intimate personal accounts and landmark events, Diamond charts David’s rise from a gay adolescent in Blackpool, through famous Channel 4 anti-drag queen cult phenomena Divine David, to the performer he is today. “The show is a celebration of survival against overwhelming odds. We have a LGBT history we are proud of.” – David Hoyle. Revisiting landmark events such as the Wolfenden Report, the decriminalisation of homosexuality, the repeal of Section 28 and the lives of prominent gay figures such as Alan Turing, and more recent LGBT political activists, Diamond offers moments of reflection and insights into this history and on-going struggle for equality. An unforgiving piece of avant-garde theatre, Diamond navigates the transformation of gay countercultures, queer gender and sexuality, and British social attitudes, and will appeal to all with liberation in their heart. With special guests The LipSinkers Diamond has been made by performer David Hoyle, director Mark Whitelaw, and producer/dramaturg Jayne Compton; commissioned by Contact and supported by Arts Council England.

120 BPM Film + Panel Discussion S

Venue: Watershed Bristol Date: Fri 6 - Sat 14 April Director: Robin Campillo Cast: Nahuel Pérez Biscayart, Arnaud Valois, Adèle Haenel Info: 143 mins, Subtitled, 2017, France Bristol Tickets: www.watershed.co.uk Price: £8 Full £5 Concessions ACT UP Bristol, the Curzon and Watershed presents: The lives of AIDS activists in early 90s Paris are reimagined in bold and vivid detail in 120 BPM, a stunning and heart-wrenching drama from the writer of Palme d’Or winner The Class, Robin Campillo. Winner of the Grand Prix at Cannes 2017 and a host of international awards, this is an essential work of cinema with a profoundly moving and delicately crafted love story at its heart. As the AIDS epidemic tears through their community, the members of ACT UP Paris are fighting for survival. While they battle against governmental apathy, pharmaceutical greed and public ignorance, they also go out partying, debate politics and, occasionally, fall in love. One day, as outspoken radical Sean (Nahuel Pérez Biscayart) strikes up a conversation with shy newcomer Nathan (Arnaud Valois), they have no idea that their lives are about to change forever. Based on the director’s own experiences, this vibrant and deeply emotional drama rushes with youthful energy, balancing powerful themes of social justice with euphoric moments of spine-tingling sensuality. Urgent and affecting, it’s a film about life, death, love, tragedy – and, above all, the will to survive. This special community event, ACT UP Bristol will be joined for Q+A with members of HIV community organisations, Brigstowe and THT, the incredibly inspiring, sexual health and LGBT rights campaigner, Lisa Power, and Ash Kotak from AIDS Memorial UK to contextualise the issues raised in film, and highlight why this film is so important today. “120 BPM is not a film about being a victim of the epidemic but about being stronger and becoming active” Robin Campillo, Writer and Director of 120 BPM
