OUT BRISTOL WELCOME
“The definitive destination for the LGBT+ communities in the dual city region of the West of England.”
Welcome to Out Bristol an independent community magazine and website for the LGBT+ communities of the West of England. Established in 2008 as an independent free access website and guide that joins up the dots to create a hub linking to further support and information. The website and guide quickly turned into a magazine with the same aims as the website as a hub, showcasing what’s on in the region for LGBT+ people. This developed to linking with the tourism board to showcase the great things happening in the city region. The site is now the LGBT+ tourism site for the region, with links to information on where to stay, attractions, festivals and the LGBT+ Scene. We have an open source policy for the site, magazine and social media which means all outbristol
outbristol
content comes directly from the source as they have sent it #nofilter. Our communities are diverse and editing content to one single voice when we are many voices does not allow for free expression. Out Bristol has over 80 contributors via its social media, website and magazine and we welcome people to contribute to the website and magazine as the more voices the better. Out Bristol is your virutal community centre, home of your Out Bristol Magazine. We’re a hub hosting a space to plug your events, social groups and news and we’re 100% independent and non for profit. We’re whatever you want us to be. We would like to thank you for visiting us and supporting Out Bristol. WWW.OUTBRISTOL.CO.UK

Un Bisonte by Pierpaolo Piccinato
If you have ever thought “I’m not good enough,” you’re probably wrong. As cheesy as it sounds, Adidas’ motto ‘Impossible is Nothing’ is something we should always remember. If you want to achieve something, you just need to believe in yourself and work on it. Growing up in Italy, where football is the only sport that matters, I had never imagined that one day I would find myself in a rugby pitch with my boots on ready for a kick-off. I play for Bisons RFC, the South-West’s only inclusive rugby club. The inclusiveness of this club makes it a safe place where you can be who you are, learn how to play rugby and improve your skills. When I was a kid, I tried football several times, but I never enjoyed it. I wasn’t good at it, so my schoolmates kept reminding me how bad I was, shouting at every mistake. No one ever called me names, but I felt they were thinking I was probably frocio - a disrespectful way to say gay - every time I said, “I don’t like football”. So then, that was it. My Italian dream was shattered before my eyes. I would never become a footballer, earn lots of money nor campaign in my underwear for Calvin Klein. I tried several sports afterwards: tennis, swimming, skiing, you name it. I tried so many sports, but never in a team. There’s no space for a gay player in a team of lads.
Last year at Bristol Pride, one of the players approached me saying “Come along, it’s fun!”…I was reluctant. I couldn’t picture myself playing a sport I have never played before. And if I did, with a single mistake, everyone would be shouting at me. “I’m not good enough”. I had never watched a rugby match before, I used to confuse it with the sport where you have a juggernaut quarterback running forward smashing the opposition while a group of cheerleaders along the side line throwing shade at each other. At my first training, I was so unfit and it was horrible. But everyone was so friendly. No pressure whatsoever. I even managed to catch a ball that was kicked to the air and everyone clapped at me. I was thrilled. It didn’t matter my experience, my age or my sexuality. Everyone was happy to give me useful advices to help me playing better. My life took an unexpected turn. My goal is now to become fitter. I’ve started training regularly, going to the gym and eating better. I’ve never felt more confident with my body, I’ve met a bunch of people that I can call friends and I have never had so many followers on Instagram. I am good enough. And you? Bristol Music: Seven decades of sound 19 May - 30 Sept Time: Tue-Sun: 10am-5pm MSHED Ticket price: Free
With more festivals than we can count, fiercely independent venues and a rich mix of styles, genres and sound, Bristol’s reputation is one of a musical juggernaut. The scene since the late 1950s has been nothing but eclectic. Artists from Acker Bilk, The Pop Group and The Wurzels to Rita Lynch, Way out West and This is the Kit, are just a handful of acts that hail from our harbourside city. Bristol Music: Seven decades of sound will take stories told by people all over the city to celebrate and debate Bristol music. Is there one definitive ‘Bristol sound’? Are the best days of Bristol music behind us? Where in the city is the heart of musical Bristol? Go back in time to seminal nights at The Bamboo Club, Granary, Motion and more, before climbing inside our graffiti’ed 90s hatchback for some karaoke. What will be on the stereo – Bananarama or Massive Attack? You may need to stop off at Ashton Court festival for a quick rest. Flick through hundreds of records discovering new bands while listening to compilation albums from rock and pop to electronica, punk and reggae. Reminisce about first gigs, first records and questionable fashion choices while brushing up on your Bristol music trivia. Who are the performers that got permanently banned from Colston Hall? And when did the big music stars come to the city? Watch a variety of films about the significance of different music scenes including reggae, grime and dubstep alongside iconic photography taken by Mark Simmons and Beezer. If you’re in need of some retail therapy after all that then Rough Trade will have a pop-up shop on the ground floor selling a selection of records, books and merchandise. Supported by an exciting events programme, Bristol Music is an open book authored by the people of the city.

Venue: Arnolfini Date: 4 June 2018 Event Running Order: 18:30-19:30 Performance 19:30 - 21:00 Talk 21:00-23:00 Afterparty Bristol Tickets: www.arnolfini.org.uk Price: £4
UWE Bristol and Arnolfini are pleased to present visiting scholar Jack Halberstam, Professor of English & Gender Studies at Columbia University, New York. Halberstam is best known for their classic contributions to gender studies, including Female Masculinity (1998), The Queer Art of Failure (2011) and Gaga Feminism (2012). They are currently working on several new projects including a book titled Wild Thing: Queer Theory After Nature, on queer anarchy, performance and protest culture, the intersections between animality, the human and the environment. Dr Finn Mackay, Senior Lecturer in Sociology at UWE Bristol will introduce and Chair the Lecture. The evening will also include a new performance work, Deuce, devised by Rachael Miles and Tom Marshman. The explores the 30th anniversary of the introduction of Section 28, the infamous legislation that banned local authorities from ‘promoting’ homosexuality and had a profoundly damaging effect on the ability to be visible as a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer (LGBTQ) person without fear of, or actual, reprisal. Growing up in the grip of clause 28 Tom and Rachael took their role models where they could find them, from Martina Navratilova, The Fall Guy, Princess Leigh to Cindy and KD Lang. Deuce will explore female masculinities and male femininities using pop cultural references to unpick historical representations of gender non-conformity and reinsert/instate them (and their relevance) into contemporary ‘queer’ discourse. The evening will conclude with Don’t Tell Your Mother DJing in the Cafe Bar. Expect pop bangers, sequins and all-around glamour. If you cannot afford a ticket but would like to attend, please contact kieran.swann@arnolfini.org.uk Biography Jack Halberstam is Professor of Gender Studies and English at Columbia University. Halberstam is the author of six books including: Skin Shows: Gothic Horror and the Technology of Monsters (Duke UP, 1995), Female Masculinity (Duke UP, 1998), In A Queer Time and Place (NYU Press, 2005), The Queer Art of Failure (Duke UP, 2011) and Gaga Feminism: Sex, Gender, and the End of Normal (Beacon Press, 2012) and, most recently, a short book titled Trans*: A Quick and Quirky Account of Gender Variance (University of California Press).

Escape in Time Author: Title: ISBN-13 Language:
Robyn Nyx Escape in Time 978-1-62639-856-6 English
Synopsis Escape in Time and Change in Time are part of the Extractor Series, which follows the operatives of the Pulsus organisation who travel to the past to save individuals who could have an enormous effect on the future. I will only detail the first book in the series, which follows the extraction of a woman from Nazi Germany who would be able to cure cancer if she lived. The story is harrowing and told with that edginess we have come to expect from Robyn. Landry Donovan is an extractor, who likes to spend her off time away from the organisation and the people in it. Jacqulyn Delaney is an operative, who believes she is in love with Landry and rarely leaves the safety of the organisation. The mental and emotional effects of how both Landry and Delaney deal with extended periods of time in the past has a large part in the storyline, which is gripping. About the Author Robyn is a raw and exciting writer who will have you transfixed with her writing. I have loved everything she has written because of her way of confronting so many of the things other authors will avoid and doing it in a manner that often leaves you with an adrenaline rush. Her research is meticulous, but her subject matter often has social relevance and is not for the fainthearted. Robyn writes it as she sees it and does not sugar-coat the personal violence that is prevalent in her subject matter. Her romance is edgy, angsty and often sexually charged. Meet the Author ELLCon is set to take place in Bristol over 23 and 24 Aug 2018. We are Europe’s first independent book conference solely dedicated to the promotion of lesbian fiction. David Bowie Made Me Gay’, Wednesday, 20th June 2018 / Rough Trade / Bristol / www.roughtrade.com/
Darryl W. Bullock will be on-stage and in-conversation at Rough Trade Bristol, discussing his new book ‘David Bowie Made Me Gay’, published by Gerald Duckworth and Co. This is a free entry in-store event. Pre-order a copy of the ‘David Bowie Made Me Gay’ Book HERE, or purchase on the day and get it signed by the author. 7.00pm On-stage In-conversation Starts 7.45pm Audience Questions 8.00pm Book Signing + Playlist From Sia to Elton John, Dusty Springfield to Little Richard, LGBT voices have changed the course of modern music. But in a world before they gained understanding and a place in the mainstream, how did the queer musicians of yesteryear fight to build foundations for those who would come after them? Pulling back the curtain on the colourful legacy that has shaped all of our musical and cultural landscape, music aficionado and writer Darryl W Bullock reveals the inspiring and often heart-breaking stories of internationally renowned stars, as well as numerous lesser-known names that have driven the revolution from all corners of the globe: those whose personal stories against the threat of persecution during decades of political and historical turmoil – including two world wars, Stonewall and the AIDS crisis – has led to some of the most significant and soul-searching music of the last century. Bullock chronicles these struggles through new interviews and archival reports, dating from the birth of jazz in the red-light district of New Orleans, through the rock ‘n’ roll years, Swinging Sixties and all-singing and all-dancing disco days of the ‘70s, right up to modern pop, electronica and reggae. A treasure-trove of untold histories, David Bowie Made Me Gay is a moving and provocative story of the right to be heard, and the need to keep the fight for equality in the spotlight. Join Darryl and a host of performers from through the decades (via a playlist) to bring alive the incredible stories in the book.
